Summer Hair hacks

During a beach holiday, hair can take the brunt of the sun’s aggressive effects and then there’s the seawater and sand to contend with. Robert Kirby from Robert Kirby London passes these summer holiday hair hacks onto all his clients.

1 Use a leave-in conditioner or conditioning hair mask before you head to the beach to ensure your hair is fully hydrated. The sun is super-drying so your hair needs extra nourishment.

2

Go easy with the heated stylers, the sun is already drying out the hair. Apply some sun protection and leave to dry naturally.

3 Avoid shampoos that contain high levels of sulphates. These will just dry out the hair even more, which is the last thing you want when the sun and heat are already taking their toll on your hair.

4 Use a clarifying shampoo after a day on the beach to wash out all the salt and sand. That way, you’re starting with a clean canvas the following morning. Always cleanse and rinse twice.

5 Keep a mist spray with UV filter handy throughout the day. A quick spritz every few hours will help protect your hair from those potentially harmful UV rays. Think of it as sunscreen for the hair — you wouldn’t expose your skin to the sun without protecting it, so you shouldn’t expose your hair either.

6 Wear a hat or scarf over the hair whenever possible and keep the styles simple and effortless. Think undone braids, loose waves or relaxed ponytails. Plaits are the perfect beach hairstyle, especially when wrapped with a scarf or ribbon for extra protection.
