QUICK QUIZ

Current British Hairdresser of the Year and Global Creative Director at Toni & Guy, Cos Sakkas, knows the value of an apprenticeship. Here are his tips for getting the most out of yours!

1 FIND THE RIGHT SALON

If you choose the apprenticeship route, it will form the foundations of your future career. Are you fascinated by fashion, wanting to get creative on photoshoots, or happy to focus on being a successful salon stylist? Find a salon that shares your passions.

2 DO YOUR RESEARCH

Check out a salon’s website and social media to see the kind of work they are doing. Are you inspired by the cuts and colours they are promoting? Do their team members get involved in activities outside of the salon that you would enjoy? Do you feel the salon or group shares the same values as you?

Ask For A Mentor

One of the best ways to learn the skills of hairdressing is to have a mentor within the salon where you are an apprentice. Ask the salon owner or manager if they are able to assign you a mentor from within the team who you can shadow on certain days. Watching up close while an experienced stylist works is a great learning experience. Your mentor should also be there for you to chat with about any concerns you may have and to answer any questions about what a career in hairdressing involves.
