“It’s a day I will never forget!”
and the winner is…
Kelly Edwards from Grimsby Institute has been named Concept Hair Learner of the Year 2024!
We caught up with Kelly to hear what she had to say about her win.
Concept Hair: How did it feel when you heard your name called out as the winner?
Kelly Edwards: It still hasn’t sunk in; never in my wildest dreams did I think I would walk away as the overall winner. It’s a dream come true, and I am so thankful to everyone at the event, for the experience, the support and of course the prizes, trophies and recognition. It’s a day I will never forget!
CH: How does it feel to win our first-ever Textured Category?
KE: Winning the category is such a fantastic feeling! There was so much talent at the competition, it's really given me something to cherish and feel proud of.
CH: How did you find the competition?
KE: The entire day was so well organised and put together, which makes a big difference when you feel anxious. All the staff were so friendly and helpful. It was nice to be able to watch other competitors and see demos in between, whilst waiting for my turn to come around.
CH: Have you gained anything new by taking part?
KE: It has given me a bigger insight into the hair industry and given me food for thought. It has also given me the confidence boost I needed, to push me into other competitions and putting myself out there.
CH: How do you think this win will help your career?
KE: It has given me invaluable experience and recognition. It's such a big achievement, and has opened new doors for me.
“The competition has given me the confidence boost I needed”
CH: Why are competitions like this so important?
KE: They open up new opportunities and experiences for students, which is such an important part of learning, building confidence and meeting professionals from the industry.
CH: What would you say to someone thinking of entering next year’s competition?
KE: Grab the chance with both hands and believe in yourself! The experience alone is worth every minute… To win, well, I am still on a high.
CH: What do you think of the prizes?
KE: The prizes are amazing, and extremely generous! So helpful when you are just starting out. Thank you so much!

This year, think bold cuts, summer curls, and luxurious rich colour tones that shimmer with vitality, complemented by a trend towards softer, more subtle shades.
PEACH FUZZ
2024 Pantone Colour of the Year, Peach Fuzz, is a soft, feminine favourite among colourists.
“This is the year of the brunette”@goldsworthyshair
Get the Look This Year’s
1
Using diagonal sections in line with the hairline, take chunky weaves and apply L’Oréal Professionnel Blond Studio Multi Techniques Powder with 20vol in foils. Be bold: the wider the weave, the greater the impact.
2
3
Next, apply a global colour around these foils; I used L’Oréal Professionnel Majirel 7.3 + 7.4 + 7.35 with 20vol.
Once developed and removed, apply your peach toner, using L’Oréal Professionnel Dia Light 9 + 8.34. Add more copper for a more vibrant tone; for a true soft peach, try a quarter copper shade to three-quarters base shade.
4
Style away! For this look, I used ghd Thin Wand on small sections to create textured curls. Wrap each section in alternating directions to amplify body and texture. Finish with L’Oréal Professionnel Savage Panache Texture spray at the roots and ends for extra body and lift.
"The gentle infusion of peach tones within this colour seamlessly blends elements of spring and summer, resulting in a fresh, organic shade that complements softer skin tones.”
Lucy Boodell, Hair Stylist from Goldsworthys
CURLS ARE BACK!
BEAUTIFUL BRUNETTE
“Colour for 2024 is intensely rich, luxurious, and glamorous, oozing shine and vitality. The obsession with (cowgirl) copper gives way to bold tones of true red, setting the foundations for 2024 being the year of the brunette as multiple tones of taupe, mushroom and burgundy offer a plethora of inspiration for those yearning for the deeper shades.”
Tom Smith, Creative Colour Director for evo haircare
TOP TIP
Develop the habit of mood boarding on your phone; this helps track your colour preferences over time and share ideas with clients and peers.
Year’s hair Trends
SUMMER CURLS
“The curl is back this summer, whether it’s natural or permed. Match this with a natural yet interesting colour combination like this muted smoky pink tone with dimensions of warmth dusty moth palette. If your client is tired of their shag from last year, update it with a statement haircut and shorter fringes to add focus to the face.”
Roman Sys, from Brooks & Brooks
BEAUTIFUL BLONDES
“Crystal clear tones of blondes make a fantastic option for those with naturally grey or white hair - or those willing to undertake the higher maintenance platinum blonde processes. This year is all about incredible attention to detail, and celebrating hairdressing for the craft that it is.”
Tom Smith, Creative Colour Director for evo haircare

@chloeswiftstylist
Hair, Camera, Action!
Meet Chlöe Swift, an award-winning content creator and professional stylist, known for her expert haircare and hair styling tutorials. Chlöe has attracted an incredible 550K followers across her social media accounts!
Concept Hair: Can you share a little about your journey into the hairdressing world?
Chlöe Swift: My journey began at 15 in a local salon, starting from a part-time job to a full-time career and apprenticeship. However, my dream job was always to be a TV presenter! It was my mum's encouragement that steered me towards hairdressing. “It’s a skill for life” or “you’ll never be out of work” she would often say. It's fascinating how the two career paths have merged together, almost!
CH: What inspired you to start focusing on content creation?
CS: Back in 2018, I was scrolling Instagram one day and I saw an influencer promoting a hair tool but the curls didn’t look great and they weren’t giving the correct hair care advice, so I thought – why aren’t brands working with professionals to get the best results? After ranting to my boyfriend, he simply suggested “why don’t you do it?”. So that's how it all started!
CH: Looking back at any challenges you faced at the start, how did you stay motivated?
CS: Juggling content creation with a fulltime job was challenging. I would dedicate my evenings and weekends to creating
content. This highlights why passion in content creation is important, as it can be quite demanding otherwise! Also, if I’m ever unsure of what to create, I read the comments and messages which give me limitless ideas!
CH: As a successful influencer, what have been your highlights so far?
CS: Achieving my first 10,000 followers on Instagram and being ranked #9 in the 2021 NHBF Awards were my first significant milestones. This was an eye-opening moment as I realised I had an engaged audience and was now being recognised as a content creator. My most recent milestones have been reaching 100,000 subscribers on YouTube, gaining the Silver Plaque and now ranking #1 in the most recent NHBF Awards.
CH: If you could turn back time, what advice would you give to your younger self?
CS: I wouldn’t change a thing; every decision has brought me to where I am today. So, the advice I'd give to my younger self would be to keep going even when you feel like quitting. It will work out in the end.
CH: What are your future plans?
CS: I’m currently working with some amazing brands, including several US ones, and I'm keen to pursue more international opportunities. I’m excited about expanding my collaborations even more and venturing into TV. I'm also working on a personal project and am open to investment – so if you’re an investor then please hit me up if you’re intrigued!
CH: Lastly, what advice would you like to share with aspiring hair industry individuals?
CS: My advice is to embrace every opportunity, particularly the daunting ones, as that’s where growth happens. Always show up with a smile on your face, hone your craft and trust your gut. With content creation – find your niche and remember that everyone has to start somewhere.

IN A HAIRDRESSING: THE WELLA COLOUR HIGHER LEVEL DIPLOMA
HOW TO BURST FADE
Rhys Whitehouse, multi-award winning barber from Wahl Artistic Team, demonstrates the burst fade technique for a trendy look.
HORSE SHOE SECTIONING
Wet the hair, part from recessional areas using the natural flow of the crown, and clip down.
STEP 02 CROSS GRADUATION
Create a profile section from crown to nape. Cut square, then cut diagonal sections through the parietal ridge to the anterior temporal zone, acutely angled near the ear. Repeat on both sides.
STEP 03
PROFILE SECTION & BLOCK GRADUATION
Divide hair from crown to hairline, lifting and cutting at 90° for a square finish, over directing outwards from the apex to the hairline, with more weight towards the fringe. Dry forward and shape.
NAPE SHAPE
Shape the nape with Wahl Hi-Viz for a burst fade that leans towards either a mullet or a mohawk style. Clean the area using a Wahl Vanish Shaver.
FRAMING & REFINEMENT
Good shaping and framing creates an impactful finish. Use Wahl Detailer to line up the hairline. Scissor-pick through the fade, and clean up the fringe and any heavy areas.
STEP 08
STYLING
Add styling powder at the root to boost volume, finish with a matt paste, and refine with a wide tooth comb.
FADE METHOD
Debulk hair around ear with Wahl Senior, moving from a 1.5 to 1 guard. Demarcate with Wahl Detailer and foil out with Vanish shaver. Blend from open 0.5 to closed 0 guard using a Wahl Magic Clip. Finish with clipper over comb.
TEXTURE METHODS
Add texture with thinning scissors or Wahl’s all-in-one blade.
SliderCuts: Barber to the stars
Meet Mark Maciver, aka SliderCuts, an awardwinning barber with almost 200k Instagram followers. His journey from humble beginnings to styling stars like Stormzy and Tinie Tempah is truly inspiring.
Beard Fade
“Hard work, dedication, and a willingness to learn will open doors and lead to success”
Taper Fade
“My journey into barbering began out of necessity!”
Concept Hair: How did you first get involved in barbering?
Mark Maciver: Growing up, I didn’t have any money to go to the barbershop, so I was getting haircuts from my mum and older brothers. One day, feeling I could do better, I picked up the clippers and decided to try it myself. Starting at age 13, I began cutting my own hair, improving over time by studying stylish haircuts I saw on TV, and practicing on myself. This was the perfect foundation for my career!
CH: At the start of your career journey, what challenges did you face, and how did you stay motivated?
MM: My biggest challenge at the start? It was definitely being short on cash! Living at home helped, but opening my own barbershop was financially challenging. I managed to overcome this by calling in all favours and the support of others. In fact, some people generously paid for their haircuts in advance, a gesture that significantly helped me get started. I learnt to trust in God instead of worrying.
CH: What have been your career highlights so far?
MM: Winning the British Black Business Award and opening my own barbershop after years of managing another, were massive achievements! Also, being nominated for the Evening Standard Business Award and landing a key role in a prominent Facebook ad campaign. These placed me among highly esteemed professionals which was an incredible confidence boost.
CH: If you could go back in time and offer advice to your younger self what would it be?
MM: Looking back, I think my career unfolded just as it should have. However, if I could offer advice to my younger self, it would have been to get into property investment earlier. Professionally, I have no regrets; my hard work, diligence, and willingness to learn were exactly what I needed to progress in my career.
CH: What are your future plans and aspirations?
MM: This year, I’m launching my own product line, including a shampoo and wave cream. I'm also excited about sharing my knowledge and experience more broadly, such as in schools, helping to shape future talents in the barbering industry.
CH: What piece of advice would you like to share with aspiring barbers?
MM: If you want to be a good barber, then focus all your attention on that, invest in your craft and in learning the skills. You don’t need a complete longterm plan at the outset; just focus on doing well in your current stage. Hard work, dedication, and a willingness to learn will open doors and lead to success.
HOW TO CREATE A LAYERED LOOK USING RAZOR-CUTTING TECHNIQUES
From Pivot Point LAB, a bespoke VTCT learning resource, this step-by-step takes us through the procedures for creating a combination layered look using a razor.
Start by taking a vertical parting in front of the ear on the right side. Distribute and project the hair straight out, position your fingers vertically and razor cut from top to bottom of the parting. Work to front hairline using a mobile design line.
Subsection the interior with a narrower horseshoe-shaped parting at the centre-top. Take a vertical parting over the right ear, use 90° projection, and hold the fingers non-parallel to increase the length toward the top. Use the razor-peeling technique and work toward the face using a mobile design line. Over-direct back to retain length at the front hairline. Cut following the previous parting, then work from the ear to the centre back using a mobile design line. Work through the crown area with trapezium-shaped parting, 90° projection and the same finger position. Repeat on the left side.
To cut the top section, take a thick horizontal parting at the back of the section and project straight up, holding your fingers horizontally. Use the previously cut crown lengths as a guide and cut using the razor peeling technique. Work forward using a mobile design line and overdirect the last parting back for a subtle length increase.
To create end texture at the front hairline, take a thin horizontal parting, distribute the hair forward with medium high projection. Position the razor under the strand and razor arc upward. Direct subsequent partings to the stationary design line and cut in the same way. Connect diagonally to the right side for a slightly off-centre effect.
Refine the perimeter sides and nape using a freehand technique, before finger-drying the hair.
To create more texture, take horizontal partings through the top, project the hair straight up and cut with the tip of the razor from the mid-strand to the ends.
The finish shows a short style with a little volume and a casual, textured appearance.

salon HOB
Academy
We speak with Jake Unger, Head of Education, about what makes HOB Academy an exceptional place to work
Concept Hair: What do you look for in an apprentice/trainee?
Jake Unger: Enthusiasm, a willingness to learn new skills and a watchful eye to keep up to date with the latest hair and fashion trends.
CH: What do you look for in an apprentice/trainee?
JU: We're focused on nurturing future stars, providing a clear progression path that can take them in any direction they like, from apprenticeship to various roles like management or owning a HOB
franchise. Our unique training includes fundamental techniques and an evolving curriculum that stays up to date with fashion trends.
CH: How long does it take for an apprentice to become a stylist?
JU: It generally takes 21-23 months to complete the Level 2 Hair Professional Standards Diploma. Once completed, individuals are selected to join our 6-12 month graduate programme. Successful graduates are then offered a position in one of our 17 salon locations.
CH: How do you support newly qualified stylists?
JU: We are very proud of our graduate programme that is based on a ‘finishing school’ concept and allows us to give our
newly qualified stylists and technicians more guided hands-on experience. This transitional period is essential to building confidence and allowing them to learn from inevitable mistakes under the stewardship of our educators.
CH: As a multi-award winning salon, what's your secret to success?
JU: Continuous learning! A practice we've upheld for nearly 41 years. Whether you’re an apprentice, stylist or a fully booked colour director, we are always investing in development and growth. We consistently introduce innovative ideas, maintaining high standards and a strong brand identity, which ensures our prominence in the industry, whether through shows, collections, or seminars.
“Every member of the HOB family truly wants the best for you and wants you to succeed”
MEET THE APPRENTICE
Troy Nottingham studied his apprenticeship at HOB’s Camden Salon and talks us through his incredible experience.
Concept Hair: Why did you choose HOB for your apprenticeship?
Troy Nottingham: I had already studied music and fashion, so I knew I wanted to do something creative. HOB caught my eye for its fashion-forward and creative approach, and I wanted to be part of it, plus it meant I could earn while I learned.
“I didn’t have the confidence that I have now and I owe a lot to Jake and to HOB as a whole”
invaluable life
skills
CH: Did you have any previous hair experience?
TN: No! In fact, I couldn’t have told you the difference between hairdressing scissors and kitchen scissors! But, I soon learned the ropes. I started as an Academy Assistant and my tasks varied massively, from setting up training rooms to assisting tutors and preparing for incredible shows and seminars.
CH: What have been your highlights?
TN: Learning how to cut and colour hair, and being able to explore my own interest in archival fashion has been amazing. Also, seeing the HOB vision come together on-stage at different events and meeting world-renowned hair pros have all been experiences I will cherish.
CH: What makes HOB great at training?
TN: The academy is an inspiring place; you feel well supported in learning new techniques that develop you in becoming a great hairdresser.
CH: How did your manager support you during training?
TN: Jake Unger, my mentor, has taught me invaluable life skills and how to conduct myself in a professional workplace. I didn’t have the confidence that I have now and I owe a lot to Jake and to HOB as a whole.
