KAZ GAS UNPLUGGED

Meet Kaz, or as her Instagram followers know her, Kaz Gas. Here, she shares her journey, challenges, and tips for aspiring plumbers.

After studying at Coalville Technical College and working 23 years at British Gas, Kaz is now enjoying the self-employed life. Her dedication and passion for the trade continue to inspire many in the plumbing world.

WHY DID YOU BECOME A PLUMBER?

"I left school without any idea of what I wanted to do. At a technical college open day, I was interested in the electrician course, but it looked boring. The plumbing course seemed better, so I chose that instead."

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DID YOU GET?

"NVQ Level 2 in Plumbing and NVQ Level 3 in Gas Service Maintenance and Installation."

FUNNIEST (OR WEIRDEST!)

JOB EXPERIENCE?

"Walking back into the wrong house when going to the van to fetch something (actually done it twice! So embarrassing)."

BIG PROJECTS OR SMALL PLUMBING JOBS?

"I prefer smaller jobs. I tend to do repairs and services and visit on average 4/5 customers a day."

WORKING IN A TEAM OR WORKING ALONE?

"I've worked alone most of my career, so now I'm used to that. It did feel lonely to start with as you miss the camaraderie of working in a team.”

ONE COMMON PLUMBING MYTH YOU’D LIKE TO DEBUNK?

"That you need silicone sealant on everything!"

MOST REWARDING PART OF PLUMBING?

"The customer being happy with my work and recommending me."

TIP TO KEEP MOTIVATED ON TOUGH DAYS?

"I don't like letting people down, so my customers motivate me. I like to give them the service I would expect from a business."

ANYTHING YOU’D LIKE TO CHANGE ABOUT THE PLUMBING INDUSTRY?

"I think plumbers who install bathrooms should also carry out repairs, as then they might consider how they install things for future maintenance, such as bonding a toilet cistern to a wall instead of screwing it."

KEY TO HANDLING DIFFICULT CLIENTS?

"I have learnt to adapt to different people and personalities, so I try to avoid any difficult situations."

YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION IN THE PLUMBING WORLD?

"A lot of different plumbers on social media inspire me for different reasons, but my biggest inspiration is my mum. She taught me how to wire a plug and wallpaper when I was 11. She was always practical and made me believe I could be too."

“AN APPRENTICESHIP IS THE BEST WAY TO GO”

ANY ADVICE YOU’D GIVE TO ASPIRING PLUMBERS?

"An apprenticeship is the best way to go. Hands-on experience is just as valuable as classroom lessons."

A MUST-KNOW PLUMBING TIP?

"Learn when to use silicone and when NOT to use it."

TALON PIPE INSTALLATION SOLUTIONS!

As a plumbing apprentice, you'll be installing many pipes.

PipeSnug and FlueSnug can save you a lot of time and effort!

PART L

The Building Regs now specify the use of pipe grommets and collars on incoming soil pipework, service penetrations, and internal building services in new-build dwellings, providing an instant airtight finish without the need for additional sealants or tape.

PIPESNUG

PipeSnug fits easily into the hole drilled for the pipework and comes in 32mm, 40mm, or 110mm sizes, removing any need for pointing.

FLUESNUG

FlueSnug can be installed in less than 5 seconds! It snugly fits the 152mm coredrilled hole in the wall through which the boiler pipe and flue exit. It’s approved by leading boiler manufacturers, including Worcester Bosch, Baxi, Ideal Heating and ATAG.

BENEFITS:

VERSATILITY

The use of pipe collars is recommended for any type of installation in existing dwellings too, so extensions and loft conversions could also benefit. The collars can be used both inside and outside the property, preventing heat loss and acting as a barrier to drafts, damp, insects, and pests.

EASY INSTALLATION AT HEIGHT

Another significant benefit of the 110mm PipeSnug and FlueSnug is that they can be installed at height without the need for ladders or scaffolding. They can be pushed through the pipework cored hole and pop back in to shape, saving both time and effort.

COMPLIANCE

NOTCHING & DRILLING

When drilling or notching structural timbers it is crucial that the holes / notches are made in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the structure.

Depth (D)

Rules for joist depth up to 250mm. For deeper joists assume D = 250mm

Span (L)

0.25 x L

Max depth of notch = D/8

0.07 x L

Notches should be in this zone

It is essential that structural members are not weakened by indiscriminate notching and boring. In this respect both the size and positioning must be in accordance with fig 1 (above).

NOTCHES SHOULD BE CUT AS FOLLOWS...

They should be cut no deeper than 1/8 of the depth of the joist. They should not be cut closer to the support than 0.07 times the span, nor further away than 0.25 (1/4) of the span.

FIGURE 1.

REQUIREMENTS FOR NOTCHING TRADITIONAL JOISTS

Drilled holes should be no greater in diameter than ¼ of the depth of the joist. They should be drilled on a neutral axis and should not be less than 3 diameters apart, measured from centre to centre. Drilled holes should be located in the area between 0.25 and 0.4 times the span of the joist from the support.

See fig. 2 (right).

0.4 x L

0.25 x L

Span (L)

Holes should be located in this zone and drilled at the neutral axis

Depth of joist (D)

Maximum diameter of a hole = 0.25 x D

Not less than 3 diameters apart centre to centre

Neutral axis of joist

ENGINEERING JOISTS

Buildings that incorporate timber ‘I’ joists (Engineering Joists) allow for more flexible drilling of holes for pipe work. ‘I’ joists incorporate 38mm knockouts (dependant upon the manufacturer), and also allow for larger holes to be drilled through the joists.

The

same

rules apply when drilling through ‘I’ joists as for drilling traditional joists where horizontal measurements between holes are concerned.

However, as the strength of ‘I’ joists is in the flange (see fig. 3), these joists are not suitable for notching, as notching the flange will damage the structure of the joist which will have a detrimental effect on its strength. The size and positioning of holes drilled through ‘I’ Joists must be in accordance with fig. 3 (right).

Not less than 3 diameters apart centre to centre Flange

38mm diameter knockouts are incorporated in TJI joists at approx 300mm centres

Additional holes can be cut but leave minimum 3mm of web at top and bottom

ANTI-FREEZE VALVES

Anti-freeze valves are a great way to save your customers' heat pump systems from freezing and extend their lifespan. Read on to find out more.

WHAT IS AN ANTIFREEZE VALVE USED FOR?

It prevents ice from forming in the circuit of a system, generally with a heat pump, avoiding potential damage to equipment, valves and pipework.

HOW DOES AN ANTIFREEZE VALVE WORK?

It is designed to be installed in the flow and return pipework from the heat pump and installed on the external pipework. By opening at temperatures below 3°C, an antifreeze valve allows system content to be dripped and discharged safely, preventing the system from freezing. At temperatures above 4°C, the valve shuts again to stop unnecessary draining.

WHAT POSITION SHOULD AN ANTI-FREEZE VALVE BE INSTALLED IN?

It must only be installed in a vertical position, with the outlet facing downwards, to allow the draining water to flow out. It is recommended to install anti-freeze valves on both the flow and return pipes; otherwise water may be left in one pipe which could then freeze. They must also not be placed close to heat sources which could interfere with their function.

For the iStop®: Keep a distance of at least 10cm between the anti-freeze valves.

For the NEW iStop® PLUS: The pair of valves can be installed vertically in parallel (see diagrams).

CAN THE ANTI-FREEZE VALVE BE INSTALLED WHERE THERE ARE TRAP CONNECTIONS?

No. If the shape of the connection pipes has the potential to create a trap effect (as shown below), part of the pipe will not be able to drain and frost protection will no longer be ensured.

“EFFICIENT AND CORRECTLY INSTALLED CIRCULATORS LEAD TO LOWER ENERGY COSTS”

We caught up with Oli Thurlow, Business Development Representative at Wilo, to hear about their entry-level Atmos PICO for young installers.

Q: Oli, can you explain why central heating circulation pumps are so important?

A: Central heating circulation pumps, also known as heating circulators, move hot water from the boiler to a home’s radiators or underfloor heating.

A modern, high-quality heating circulator efficiently distributes hot water throughout the heating system. In contrast, inefficient or poorly installed circulators lead to higher energy costs for tenants and homeowners.

EFFICIENT HEATING SOLUTIONS SCAN

Q: What heating circulators does Wilo offer?

A: For residential use, we have the PICO family of circulators, including the popular Yonos PICO and Stratos PICO

pumps. Recently, we launched the Atmos PICO in the UK, our entry-level product in the PICO range.

Q: Why should a newly qualified installer choose the Atmos PICO?

A: The Atmos PICO has all the essential functions for an averagesized family home. It uses energy-efficient EC motor technology, working based on demand rather than running continuously like older fixed-speed pumps. Its compact design makes installation quick and easy.

The pump is easy to commission with a user-friendly interface featuring three set speeds and a variable differential pressure option. This allows the pump to modulate to the system's needs, ensuring efficiency and energy savings. It also includes auto

venting and auto-deblocking, with manual venting possible by switching the unit off and on.

Q: Where can installers buy the Atmos PICO?

A: The Atmos PICO is available exclusively through PHG (Plumbing Heating Group) merchants as part of the Instinct Range.
