Connect, collaborate, and grow your career
The Beauty Industry offers exciting and rewarding career opportunities, where creativity, skill, and passion come together to transform lives. But why is it such a popular choice for the next generation of beauty professionals?
Beauty therapists play a vital role in people’s lives - far beyond just helping them look good. The impact of your work goes deeper than the surface. Here are some of the ways beauty therapists contribute to their clients' overall well-being:
1
▶ Boosting Confidence:
A beauty therapist’s work can empower clients to feel their best. Whether it’s helping them master a skincare routine or providing a flawless make-up look for a special occasion, these treatments enhance self-image and give clients the confidence to present themselves to the world with pride.
2
▶ Providing a Space for Emotional Well-Being:
Beauty treatments often serve as a form of self-care. Beyond the visible results, they create a peaceful environment where clients can take a break from stress, recharge, and refocus on themselves. This emotional reset can significantly enhance mental health.
3
▶ Supporting Holistic Wellness:
The Beauty Industry increasingly integrates treatments that benefit both body and mind. Massages, for instance, release endorphins and lower stress hormones, promoting a sense of balance and overall well-being.
Every appointment is an opportunity to make a difference in someone’s day - and often, their life. As a beauty therapist, you’re creating an experience that leaves a lasting impression.
One of the most exciting aspects of the Beauty Industry is the sheer variety of career paths available. Whatever your strengths and passions, there’s a role to suit you. Here’s a glimpse of the opportunities waiting for you:
• Spa Therapist: Specialising in relaxation and wellness, spa therapists deliver treatments like facials, massages, and body scrubs in tranquil settings such as luxury spas, hotels, or resorts.
• Make-Up Artist: From bridal make-up to high-fashion editorials and film sets, makeup artists bring creative visions to life and adapt to a wide range of styles and settings.
• Nail Technician: The world of nail art and care is as vibrant as the colours on your palette. Nail technicians create everything from elegant manicures to intricate nail designs.
• Waxing Specialist: Waxing remains one of the most sought-after services in beauty therapy, offering both flexibility and the opportunity to build loyal repeat clients. From traditional body waxing to advanced techniques like intimate waxing, this niche is a lucrative option.
• Cosmetic Scientist: Behind every product on a salon shelf is a team of innovative cosmetic scientists formulating skincare, haircare, and make-up solutions. If you love combining science with creativity, this might be your calling.
• Freelancer or Mobile Therapist: Many beauty professionals enjoy the freedom and flexibility of running their own business, choosing their hours, and building strong relationships with their clients.
• Specialist Roles: The Beauty Industry offers plenty of niches to explore, including lash extensions, brow styling, aromatherapy, and advanced skincare technologies like micro-needling and LED therapy.
Whether you want to travel the world as a therapist on a luxury cruise ship, work behind the scenes at fashion shows, or develop groundbreaking products, the Beauty Industry offers endless possibilities. With constant growth and innovation, there’s always something new to learn, inspiring creativity and passion in every corner of the industry.

2
▶ Ongoing support:

From humble beginnings to industry success, Sadia Parveen’s journey proves that passion, perseverance, and a willingness to learn can take you anywhere. Now a leading brow expert, Sadia shares her story, proving that with dedication, you can turn your talent into a thriving career.
▶ Q: Can you tell us a little about your journey?
▶ A: Sadia Parveen: I started my beauty journey at 15, doing make-up, brows, and facial hair removal. People queued at weddings for me to do their make-up and eyeliner, they always commented on my steady hand. I loved making things look beautiful, but due to stigma, I pursued teaching instead. My dad once asked why I didn’t do beauty professionally - I had home clients for brows but was too shy to charge them.
▶ Q: What challenges did you face when starting out?
▶ A: I completed my beauty training in 2006, which focused more on facials and waxing than brows. In 2007, I took the leap and opened my salon - but the recession hit, and facials became a luxury few could afford. On my opening week, heavy snow meant I was lucky to get one £3 brow client a day. My sister reassured me, but inside, I was panicking. Determined not to quit, I worked nights at McDonald's to fund equipment and slowly built up my business. Over time, I expanded from one treatment couch to five, upgrading from makeshift curtains to proper treatment rooms.
▶ Q: What first inspired you to specialise in brows?
▶ A: At first, I wasn’t keen on brows, but every client asked for them. I realised I needed to embrace it, and once I picked up speed, I started loving it. Clients calling me the ‘Brow Queen’ gave me confidence, but I stayed humble and always worked from the heart. Brow trends constantly evolve - some are fads, others last. I make sure to train in every new technique to stay ahead.
▶ Q: What’s a big misconception people have about brows?
▶ A: That trendy brows suit everyone. Ultimately, every face is different My approach is tailored - some clients love an arch, others prefer a flatter shape. Years of experience have taught me how to adapt brows to suit individual features.
“That trendy brows suit everyone. Ultimately, every face is different”
Never become complacent, and give back to the community whenever you can - the goodness comes back tenfold.
@sadiasbeautylounge
“When clients tell me I’ve changed their lives, that’s all the inspiration I need”
▶ Q: How important is ongoing training?
▶ A: Ongoing education is crucial, especially now with TikTok and social media driving new trends. You need proper qualifications to ensure safety and insurance coverage. Always research courses before enrolling.
▶ Q: What key things should someone consider before setting up a brow business?
▶ A: Before starting a brow business, build a client base. I always tell students: get a wax pot and practice at home. Follow the ‘Rule of 100’ - once you’ve shaped 100 brows, your confidence and skill will soar. The same applies to body waxing - clients want speed and precision.
▶ Q: Would you do anything differently?
▶ A: No, I wouldn’t change a thing - it all worked out in the end. Balancing creativity with business can be challenging, but I’ve learned to adapt, grow, and keep moving forward.
▶ Q: Your proudest moment?
▶ A: Retraining after lockdown in semipermanent make-up and aesthetics. I was terrified, but my loyal clients trusted me, and it paid off.
▶ Q: Any advice for apprentices?
▶ A: Don’t give up. Passion, practice, and confidence go hand in hand. No matter how my day starts, work always makes me happymy clients are like family.
▶ Q: Your key qualities for success?
▶ A: Cleanliness, punctuality, confidence, hard work, and a can-do attitude. For students starting out - be patient. No two clients are the same, and you’ll always be learning.
▶ Q: What keeps you motivated?
▶ A: Helping others. When clients tell me I’ve changed their lives, that’s all the inspiration I need. To my younger self, I’d say: trust the process, work with a pure heart, and success will follow.

Perfect for personal use or professional artistry
Millie Kendall OBE has worked her way from sweeping floors to becoming one of the most influential figures in beauty. Here, she shares her journey and advice for the next generation of beauty professionals.
▶ From Salon Apprentice to Beauty Trailblazer
Whether you know Millie Kendall as the cofounder of Ruby & Millie, the 90s cult makeup line, or as the Founder and CEO of the British Beauty Council, she has shaped the Beauty Industry from every angle. But few people know that her career began not in make-up, but in hair.
“I was sweeping floors and washing hair every Saturday from the age of 13 in my father’s Beverly Hills salon,” Millie recalls. “I loved the hairdressing environment, so after moving back to London, I started training at Toni & Guy and enrolled in a YTS programme.”
▶ Learning The Ropes
In the 1980s, the Youth Training Scheme (YTS) was the apprenticeship of its time - offering ‘on-the-job' training in industries like hairdressing. Millie trained alongside her contemporaries, and now friends, Josh Wood and Charlotte Mensah.
With her training complete, she returned to the US, landing a role at the flagship Bumble & Bumble salon. But it wasn’t quite the success story she had envisioned. Millie was told she was ... “a terrible hairdresser”. Rather than letting this deter her, Millie pivoted to make-up - where she found her true calling.
Always keep your brushes clean - hygiene is just as important as skill in building a professional reputation.
▶ A Passion for Beauty
Millie’s break came when she turned around the struggling Shu Uemura store in California.
“I chucked the doors open, pumped up the music, and hired all my friends. It meant no one was intimidated to come in and try, swatch, and test”, she says.
This infectious energy caught the attention of brands like Aveda, Tweezerman, and L’Occitane, who enlisted her to launch their products in the UK, and beyond! Then came a game-changing opportunity - Boots approached her to create a cutting-edge cosmetics line... enter Ruby & Millie.
In 1998, Millie, along with Ruby Hammer MBE, launched Ruby & Millie, a cosmetics line featuring an impressive 365 products. The brand expanded across 114 UK stores and into international markets, including Japan, Holland, and Thailand.
Following this success, Millie co-founded BeautyMART - a retail concept highlighting the most innovative beauty products - and Brandstand PR, a communications agency focused on brands ‘doing things differently’. Millie worked with fellow industry leaders Anna Marie Solowij, former beauty director of British Vogue, and Andrew Perera, previously Vice President of Global Communications at MAC and leading communications consultant, on these ventures.
@rubyandmilliebeauty
▶ Championing the Beauty Industry
Today, Millie’s focus is on ensuring the Beauty Industry (hair, make-up, nails, massage and so much more) gets the recognition it deserves. As CEO and Founder of the British Beauty Council, she advocates for the £27.2bn industry that employs over 603,000 people in jobs that are creative, fulfilling and deliver wellbeing, the Beauty Industry is unlike any other.
“The Beauty Industry is unlike any other”
With decades of experience across hair, make-up, retail, and brand development, Millie Kendall OBE knows what it takes to make it in beauty. Whether you're just starting out or looking to take your career to the next level, these are her top three tips for success.
“See challenges as an opportunity”
There will be hundreds of ‘no’s’ throughout your career, but don’t see going back to the drawing board as a weakness. The Beauty Industry is full of transferable skills - it’s all about testing things and finding your niche.
Not sure you’ve found the right area of beauty to build your career? Check out the British Beauty Council’s Future Talent Programme, which spotlights the unique careers within our industry.
“I started sweeping hair, now I advocate on behalf of our whole industry”
“Have fun and do something you believe in”
It sounds cliché, but really loving what you do - and working with people who are just as passionate - makes all the difference. Some days will be tougher than others, but if you’re aligned with what truly excites you, even the hard work feels rewarding.
Sometimes, taking a step back and asking yourself whether you’re making the impact you want to can be the key to long-term fulfilment.
“Always introduce yourself first”
Walking into a room full of strangers can be daunting, but a confident ‘hello’ will always set you apart. Being the first to introduce yourself creates an immediate connection and makes you memorable.
Seize those moments - they can shape your career. After all, who knows what would have happened if Millie hadn’t walked into Shu Uemura that day?
“Success as a make-up artist is about confidence, connections, and embracing every opportunity”
“it’s all about testing things and finding your niche”

Isabel Rose Till, an apprentice at Molly Rose Beauty, is training for her Level 3 Diploma for Beauty Professionals and an Assessors qualification with Kleek Apprenticeships. She’s created this handy step-by-step guide to help you achieve the perfect lipstick look and master this tricky skill.
Step 1:
▶ Exfoliation
• Start by applying an exfoliation cream to the lips.
• Gently massage with an exfoliation brush in small, circular motions. This helps remove dead skin and create a smooth canvas for lipstick application.
• Wipe away any excess cream with a clean, damp cloth.
Step 4:
▶ Lipstick Application
• Select the appropriate lipstick shade for your client’s desired look.
• Use a lipstick brush to apply the lipstick evenly to the lips.
• Ensure you cover the entire lip area.
Step 2:
▶ Prep & Prime
• Apply a lip primer or prep cream to the lips using a small brush.
• This step is essential for ensuring the lipstick adheres well and lasts longer.
Step 5:
▶ Lip Gloss
• For a fuller and shinier finish, apply lip gloss.
• Gently spread the lip gloss over the lipstick using a clean brush.
• This final step adds dimension and shine to the overall look.
“Lip liner defines the lips and prevents lipstick from bleeding”
Step 3:
▶ Lip Liner
• Choose the correct shade of lip pencil for your client's chosen look. Use a colour two shades darker for a fuller effect or one shade darker/same shade for a softer look.
• Carefully outline the lips, following their natural shape.
• Lip liner defines the lips and prevents the lipstick from bleeding.

Beautiful nails enhance confidence
A good nail routine supports nail health
A well-manicured set of nails enhances confidence and style. Whether your client prefers a natural look or bold colours, nail care ensures strong, healthy, and beautiful nails that last.
Polished nails create a lasting impression
The Nail Industry has grown from a specialised beauty treatment into a refined practice. Today’s nail services range from classic manicures to delicate nail art - all while keeping nail health at the forefront.
With fresh trends and thoughtfully designed products rolling out regularly, treatments are crafted to look stunning and to care for natural nails. Here, we’ll walk you through the essential steps to achieve a flawless gel polish look - and lasting performance - which all starts with brilliant prep.
“Thorough nail prep is a gamechanger”
▶ Keep it clean
Sanitise your client’s hands and nails - and don’t forget your own - even if it seems super obvious! This step ensures that products adhere to the natural nail by removing any oils and helps to reduce bacteria that could result in cross-contamination.
▶ Tidy up the cuticles
Gently push back the cuticles and remove any dead skin from beneath the nail fold and along the side grooves. This clears the way for the gel to bond properly, creating a clean frame for the final look.
▶ Shape for success
File the natural nail, using the Hand & Nail Harmony Wooden File. This gives the desired nail shape but also etches the nail surface, providing a rough edge for better gel adhesion.
▶ Buff and cleanse
▶ Seal the deal
Apply a thin coat of Gelish pH Bond. This dehydrates the nail surface and balances its pH, setting the stage for optimal bonding with your next layer. STEP 3
Buff the nail gently using the 180 side of a 100/180 buffer. This removes the natural shine and creates a subtle texture that helps the gel stick. Once buffed, wipe away any dust with Gelish Nail Surface Cleanse and a lint-free wipe, ensuring a perfectly clean surface.
“Stick to Gelish’s prep steps and you’ll enjoy a long-lasting, on-point finish every time”
Note: Investing time in thorough nail preparation is indispensable for achieving a perfect gel polish application. It prevents chipping, peeling and lifting while keeping the natural nail healthy. Stick to Gelish’s prep steps and you’ll enjoy a long-lasting, on-point finish every time.

Nails can vary in strength and flexibility, making it challenging to strike the ideal balance between durability and nail health. Whether your clients have weak, brittle nails or flexible, peeling ones, Gelish provides options to help maintain strong, healthy nails, and even help strengthen problematic nails.
By combining the ease of polish with the durability of gel, Gelish creates a flexible yet robust layer that bonds seamlessly to your natural nail. Its innovative formulation is designed to prevent breakage and peeling - making it perfect for those looking to gradually strengthen their natural nails.
Gelish provides tailored solutions for different nail needs:
▶ Foundation Flex A ‘rubber base’ that allows natural bend while maintaining strength.
▶ Structure Gel Reinforces weak or peeling nails, adding durability without excess rigidity.
▶ Brush-On Builder Builds strength and structure while keeping a natural look; it can also be used for extensions.

From PIVOT POINT’S online learning platform LAB, these two step-by-steps for the Fundamentals: Nails Programme demonstrate the procedures for creating marbling techniques.
▶ Marbling - Polish
In this nail art design, contrasting colours of traditional polish are layered and softly diffused to replicate the look of veined marble.
A base coat and two topcoats of a traditional coloured polish have been applied and allowed to dry. Here a soft, pale pink has been applied as the background colour.
Apply the first layer of “marbled” lines using a medium detail brush:
• Dispense a small amount of black polish onto a palette
• Load a medium detail brush, cover approximately half of the tip and test on a palette
• Apply a few jagged lines to the nail using a light touch
• Vary the angles; shake your finger and the brush to create irregular lines
• Repeat on subsequent nails or allow to dry almost completely
• Clean the brush with lint-free wipe and polish remover.
Designs and images courtesy of Pivot Point International, Inc. © 2024 from the Fundamentals: Nails Programme.
Apply a layer of semi-translucent polish:
• Coordinate with the background colour
• Apply to the entire nail, capping the free edge.
Note: This layer will mute the dark lines and drag or bleed them, creating the marble effect. The drier the lines, the less dragging will occur.
Apply smaller, jagged lines using black polish before the translucent polish completely dries:
• Gently “float” over the previous polish without applying pressure.
• Allow to partially dry
Apply another layer of the semitranslucent polish:
• Cap the free edge
• Apply additional lines of the darker colour and layer with translucent polish, if desired.
Apply topcoat to complete the design.
Note: To avoid smearing, allow the polish to dry completely before applying the topcoat.
Apply a gel base coat and one coat of black gel polish and cure individually:
• Dispense chosen colours of gel paints onto a palette (primary red, yellow and blue)
• Ensure the colours have enough contrast to be visible.
▶ Marbling – Gel Polish
In this nail art design, gel polish or gel paints are used on a gel-polish background to create a ribbon effect.
Apply a thin second coat of the gel polish background colour, sealing the free edge first:
• Do not cure this coat
• Clean up as needed.
Apply the first marbling colour using a longer detail brush:
• Apply irregular lines of the first colour (blue)
• Apply very lightly, “floating” colour over the black polish
• Clean brush using lint-free wipe and alcohol.
Apply the second and third marbling colours:
• Use the same detail brush to apply the second colour (red)
• Vary the length and direction of the lines
• Cross over the previously applied lines
• Clean the brush and apply the third (yellow) in same manner.
Apply gel topcoat to complete design:
• Cure and remove inhibition layer.
Repeat the application until the desired effect is achieved:
• Additional colours or finishes can be incorporated
• Cure following manufacturer’s instructions.

Supports a healthy, radiant complexion
Protects against dryness and irritation
Helps maintain skin’s natural balance
Skincare involves nourishing and protecting the skin to maintain its health and appearance. A good routine supports hydration, repair, and defence against environmental damage.
Beauty Guild, the UK’s largest trade body for fully qualified and insured beauty, hair and wellbeing professionals, explains why exosomes are causing excitement in the skincare world.
“Clients should begin using exosomes in skincare in their late 20s to 30s”
“Exosomes are recommended for clients looking to address skin concerns”
Exosomes contain powerful bioactives that act as cellular messengers. These small vesicles derived from stem cells are known to work by enhancing the cellular environment, regulating genes, and guiding cell behaviour, which significantly improves skin health Extensive research has demonstrated their potential in cosmetics, skincare, tissue regeneration, and dermatological treatments.
▶ What are the benefits of exosomes?
Exosomes are known to help:
• Reduce the appearance of inflammation
• Promote collagen production
• Accelerate cell turnover
This makes them an effective option for post-treatment recovery and overall skin rejuvenation.
What are the different types of exosomes?
Exosomes used in skincare can come from different sources:
▶ Human
• Human stem cells
• Deliver proteins, lipids, nucleic acids and growth factors
• Ethical challenges exist around using human exosomes
• In the UK, human-derived ingredients are banned
▶ Animal
• Bovine and ovine
• Deliver proteins, lipids and nucleic acids
• Animal-derived exosomes are banned for cosmetic use in the UK
▶ Plant
• Fruit, vegetables and herbs
• Deliver antioxidants, vitamins and plant growth factors
• Vegan
• In the UK, plant-derived exosomes are legal for cosmetic use
▶ Bacterial
• Lactobacillus
• Deliver proteins, lipids and nucleic acids
• Vegan
• In the UK, vegan bacterial exosomes are legal for cosmetic use
“Plant or vegan bacterial exosome infused solutions can be used by qualified and insured skin specialists”
▶ When should exosomes be introduced into skincare?
It is suggested that clients should begin using exosomes in skincare in their late 20s to 30s, as this is typically the time when collagen production, hyaluronic acid, and other regenerative factors begin to slow down and deplete. This is also traditionally the time when sun damage and the effects of genetic factors and environmental aggressors begin to show on the skin. Exosomes are recommended for clients looking to address skin concerns like scarring, textured skin, enlarged pores, and fine lines, or to improve overall skin texture.
For the best results it is recommended that you book a specialist plant or vegan bacterial exosome treatment. Plant or vegan bacterial exosome infused solutions can be used by qualified and insured skin specialists during and post micro-injury procedures, like microneedling.
As exciting as new skincare technology is, it is extremely important to find a fully qualified and insured skin specialist to perform an exosome therapy treatment, as it penetrates beyond the skin barrier.
While arguably more potent when delivered in a treatment, plant and vegan bacterial exosomes can also be harnessed in athome skincare products
Another safety issue to raise is that mammalian - or human - derived exosomes are not safe for cosmetic use. If the product is derived from animal or human stem cells, it is illegal in this country and should not be sold or used here.
Plant and vegan bacterial exosomes are legal for cosmetic use in the UK and can be offered in treatments only by fully qualified and insured skin specialists.
