Prepare to Shine!
Here are our 10 top tips for finding an apprenticeship in a salon.
1 SHOW ENTHUSIASM AND PASSION:
Salons want to see that you’re genuinely interested in hairdressing or barbering. Be ready to talk about why you're passionate about the industry.
2 CREATE A STRONG CV:
Write your CV to highlight any relevant experience. Include any part- time jobs that show you’re reliable and hard working.
3 GET WORK EXPERIENCE:
If possible, find some unpaid work experience at a salon. This will show you’re serious about the hair industry and give you valuable hands- on experience. ☑ ☑ ☑
FIRST IMPRESSIONS MATTER
4 PRESENT YOURSELF PROFESSIONALLY:
First impressions matter. When you visit salons or attend interviews, dress smartly and look presentable. Hairdressers are all about appearance, so make sure you look the part.
5
RESEARCH THE SALON:
Before approaching a salon, do your homework. Know their style, services, and any awards they've won. This shows you're genuinely interested in them, not just any apprenticeship.
6 BE READY TO LEARN:
Salons look for apprentices who are eager to learn. Show that you're open to feedback and willing to develop your skills.
“A can-do attitude goes a long way”
7 DEVELOP GOOD COMMUNICATION SKILLS: You’ll be interacting with clients, so being friendly, polite, and confident is essential. Practise introducing yourself and making small talk to build your confidence.
8 HAVE A POSITIVE ATTITUDE:
A can-do attitude goes a long way. Salons want apprentices who are upbeat, motivated, and ready to take on any task with a smile.
9 BUILD A PORTFOLIO:
Even as a beginner, start a portfolio of any haircuts, styles, or techniques you’ve practised. This could be photos of work on mannequins or friends to showcase your growing skills.
10 DON’T BE AFRAID TO FOLLOW UP:
If you’ve applied to a salon and haven’t heard back, don’t be afraid to follow up with a polite phone call or email. It shows you’re keen and serious about the opportunity.

How Competitions can Help You!
Hi, my name is Kevin Kusmierek, and I’m proud to be the 2024 Concept Hair Learner of the Year Barbering Level 3 Category Winner!
My tutor at Oldham College, Tiffany Park, encouraged me to enter the competition – and I'm so glad I did! Out of 2,400 applicants, I made it to the final nine!
WHY YOU SHOULD ENTER!
NETWORKING: You’ll meet big band ambassadors. Talking to them on a down to earth level is something unreal. Everyone in the industry is so genuine and humble, and they all have plenty of advice and help to give you.
EXPERIENCE: Being on that competition floor with others all aiming for the trophy is – let’s just say – indescribable! You feel the thrill and find yourself completely locked in. It’s incredible to be part of something so big.
WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY: You’ve got nothing to lose. If you make it to the final, you gain so much. Along with all the goodies from brands and sponsors, you also gain inspiration, vision, valuable contacts, and your aspirations will grow.
FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES:
Reaching the finals or winning gives you a massive confidence boost. It adds valuable experience under your belt, looks great on your CV, and opens up opportunities like nothing else!
@k.kusmierek_cuts
SINCE ENTERING THE COMPETITION...
I had the chance to attend a course with Simon Shaw (WAHL Global Artistic Director), which inspired me for the finals. After winning, I then got to teach alongside Simon at Worsley College – INCREDIBLE!
I was also the opening talent on the Main Stage at the first-ever HairCon event in Manchester, alongside Molly Rayner (a previous Concept Hair winner). More recently, I joined JD Sports’ back-to-school campaign, giving free haircuts with @BarberstopGlobal. It’s been an amazing journey... and it’s just the beginning!
MY 3 ‘BEAT THE NERVES’ TIPS!
★ BREATHE, STAY CALM, AND TRUST YOURSELF
★ DON’T COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHERS – FOCUS ON YOU.
★ HAVE SUPPORTERS WITH YOU TO CHEER YOU ON!
To everyone thinking about entering, go for it! You've got nothing to lose and everything to gain.
How To Prepare for Competitions
Entering a hair competition could be the best decision you make as a student!
Concept Hair 2024 Learner of the Year, Kelly Edwards, shares her top tips on how to prepare, build confidence, and take advantage of the massive benefits that competitions offer. If you have the chance to enter a competition, go for it! It's a fantastic way to gain knowledge, experience, and meet incredible people in the industry.
1
BELIEVE IN YOURSELF: There's a winner inside you! Self-belief is key. When your tutors or friends compliment your work, trust what they say and embrace the idea that you have what it takes to succeed.
2
PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT: Practise your look as much as possible before the competition. It will help you feel confident and reduce nerves on the day, allowing you to focus on your creation.
3
STAY CALM AND FOCUSED: Although it’s natural to be nervous, try to zone in on your work and concentrate on what you’ve practised. Once finished, relax, take time to enjoy the experience and see what other competitors are doing.
4
DON’T TAKE IT TOO SERIOUSLY: Enjoy the journey and learn from the process. While it’s important, try not to stress out. Have fun, and soak up everything you can.
5

DAY IN THE LIFE:
6.45AM – Wake up, usually by my kids jumping all over me! It beats an alarm clock any day.
7.30AM – Cold shower. I’m cutting back on coffee, so this gives me the kick I need to start my day.
8.15AM – Head into work. I like getting the shop ready before my clients arrive, so I can start the day prepared and ensure my tools are in working order.
9.00AM – Start my morning clients I specialise in short hair, so a lot of my clientele involves clipper work, but I always ensure each client gets a full consultation to achieve their desired result.
1.00PM – Lunchtime! I never used to take lunch breaks and would just grab a sandwich between clients, but I’ve realised the importance of taking time for myself. It keeps my head in the right space and my focus on the job.
1.45PM – Afternoon clients. A big part of my job revolves around content, so I sometimes bring clients in to shoot videos, showcasing products, tools, or techniques.
5.30PM – Finish clients for the day. I then spend some time cleaning the shop and preparing for the next day.
6.00PM – Head home. I’ve recently adjusted my working hours to get home earlier and spend more time with my children. I love my job, but it’s all about finding the right balance.
5 STEPS TO BECOMING A BARBER:

4
Network – Connect with others in the industry to gain valuable insights and open doors to potential opportunities.
5
Stay Humble – It’s easy to chase social media fame, but patience and consistency will always get you the results you want.

MY 3 TOP TIPS!
★ ALWAYS STAY HUMBLE, NO MATTER HOW BIG THE WIN.
★ KEEP KNOCKING ON DOORS. DON’T BE AFRAID TO KNOCK ON DOORS. IF YOU KNOCK ON ENOUGH, ONE WILL OPEN AND COULD REVEAL PARTS OF THE INDUSTRY YOU'VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE.
★ INVEST IN YOURSELF. YOU CAN NEVER SPEND TOO MUCH ON EDUCATION. INVESTING IN YOURSELF IS THE BEST DECISION YOU’LL EVER MAKE.
“If you want to be the best, you need to use the best. Wahl clippers will help you achieve the results you want every time, without fail.”

How to Create a focal point with colour
From PIVOT POINT’S online learning platform LAB, this step-by-step demonstrates the procedures for creating a focal point with colour using a back-to-back slicing technique.
The diagram shows an off-centre triangle-shaped section parted just behind the front hairline. The corner over the left eye is rounded off. Mediumfine, back-to-back diagonal slices are taken from the rounded corner of the triangular section.
Note that the slices are wider towards the opposite side of the triangle.
Begin at the front of the triangular section. Take a medium-fine diagonal slice starting at the rounded corner.
Position a foil underneath the strand and apply the colour from the edge of the roots to the ends.
Fold the foil using the single-fold technique.
Continue to use the same slicing and foiling techniques for the next three slices, applying lightener to each slice.
Process according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The copper-red colour was rinsed first and then the lightener, prior to shampooing, conditioning and finishing as desired.
Release another diagonal slice from the rounded corner of the triangular shape and apply lightener using the same slicing and foiling techniques. NOTE that different-coloured foils are used to identify the lightener and the copper-red colour.
Release the last diagonal slice and apply the copper-red colour using the same application and foiling techniques to complete this section.
finished look
The finish shows a bold contrast of colour in which the longer, irregular layers become the focal point.

10AM - 1PM: My morning is all about clients - haircuts, beard trims, shaves, and other grooming services.
1PM - 2PM: I make sure I have time for a lunch break, where I usually edit my work and schedule it on social media. An online presence is crucial as it acts as a portfolio to attract new clients and can lead to brand collaborations - I’m now working with Indola on some exciting projects.
2PM - 8PM: I’m back on the salon floor, doing haircuts, beard trims, shaves, and other grooming services.

How to Create A fishtail braid
From PIVOT POINT’S online learning platform LAB, this step-by-step demonstrates the procedures for creating a fishtail braid. This versatile design can be created as a single braid, transformed into a textured “undone” finish, or incorporated into a hair-up style.
Start by preparing the hair, brush through to remove tangles, apply a serum and smooth with straighteners.
Comb the hair for a side braid. Divide the hair into two equal strands.
Then take a small subsection from the outside of the right strand and cross it over to the inside of the left strand.
Starting on the left, take a small subsection from the outside of the strand over to the inside of the right strand.
Repeat the process alternating from one strand to the other until you complete the braid.
finished look
On completion secure with a hair band. To cover the band, take a large pin and push the top up under the band. Then take a small section of hair and wrap it around the band. Then feed the ends of the section through the loop of the pin, push the pin down and pull the hair through. This variation creates a seamless finish, with no visible band.
This look shows a classic fishtail braid. Apply a finishing spray, if required.
Beyond vanity
Ever wondered what hairdressing looked like before TikTok trends? The new book ‘Beyond Vanity’ takes you on a fascinating journey through the earlier days of hairdressing.
THE PALMER HOUSE BARBERSHOP:
A GLIMPSE INTO THE PAST
Beyond Vanity transports readers to a time when salons were far different from the minimalist, sleek spaces we see today. The Palmer House barbershop, for instance, wasn’t just a place for quick services; it was a site of extravagance and luxury, with a marble floor reportedly embedded with cash! The book vividly describes:
“The similarly ornate barbershop in the Palmer House Hotel in Chicago, run by William S. Eden, claimed that eight hundred silver dollars were inlaid into its marble floor”
“A
Unlike today’s salons, which are often designed for efficiency, the Palmer House barbershop was a showpiece, a space where wealth and status were on display as much as the latest hairstyles.
marble floor reportedly embedded with cash!”
CLIP-IN HAIR PIECES: THE ORIGINAL HAIR EXTENSIONS
While today’s salons offer seamless, natural-looking extensions, the early clip-in pieces highlighted in the book were more about practicality and versatility. These accessories, though revolutionary at the time, were often bulky and less refined compared to the sleek options available now. The book notes:
“Smaller shops might have modest amounts of furnishings that were less fancy but no less important to their communities
These early hair pieces were essential for achieving the elaborate and often towering hairstyles of the time.
BARRY'S TRICOPHEROUS: MARKETING IN THE AGE BEFORE SOCIAL MEDIA
In a world without Instagram or TikTok influencers, marketing hair products like Barry’s Tricopherous relied on creative trade cards and word-ofmouth. The colourful, intricate designs of these advertisements were crucial in drawing attention to products, a far cry from the digital campaigns we see today.
A GLIMPSE INTO EARLY SALON PRACTICES
“Marketing... relied on creative trade cards and word-of-mouth”
Services like shampooing, which are now standard, were once considered novel and even challenging due to the lack of modern plumbing:
“Depending on how modernised buildings were, they might be equipped with running water, allowing for wet shampooing. Splashed or spilled water would land on the floor to be swiftly dried with towels or a mop”
In contrast to the clean, streamlined processes in today’s salons, early establishments had to work around significant limitations, often improvising to provide what we now consider basic services.

Ashleigh Hodges, a multi-award winner, is the owner of Mash Creative Studio in East London and the youngest female President of The Fellowship for British Hairdressing.
HOW IT STARTED...
• I began my career at my mum's salon in Towcester, doing my apprenticeship at a local college in Northampton. I'd worked as a Saturday assistant since I was 11, helping in the family salon whenever I could.
• Determined to excel, I joined the Fellowship for British Hairdressing's Clubstar membership and messaged every hairdressing icon I could to assist them.
• Errol Douglas MBE took me under his wing, and by 19, I was his main assistant, working on projects like the British Hairdresser of the Year shoot and London Fashion Week.
HOW IT’S GOING...
• I am now the Owner and Curator of Mash Creative Studio, a sustainable space in East London, and the youngest female President of The Fellowship for British Hairdressing.
• I've won multiple awards, from Colour Expert to It Girl and Sustainable Salon of the Year, and regularly work backstage at Paris and London Fashion Weeks. I’ve also worked on TV shows like The Voice UK and Britain’s Got Talent, travelling globally for shoots and hair shows.
• Years of working on my craft and connecting with the industry have led me here. If I can do it, so can you!
