Welcome to the new look HIP Magazine! As you may have noticed we have a brand new logo, and the magazine has been redesigned too. We’ve also been busy working on a new website, which you can see at www.hip-magazine.co.uk Alongside some new features including competitions and videos, it also has the latest industry news and magazine downloads so you can check the answers to the exercises in the magazines. September heralds the start of a brand new college term, so it’s appropriate that we’re launching the search for the HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year 2016 this month. The competition is an annual event which gives colleges the chance to enter their best students for regional heats, leading to a grand final where they will be assessed on practical tasks. Every year the event is supported by leading manufacturers, and this year is no exception with Adey confirming a three year sponsorship deal to support the competition. Turn to page 8 to find out more. Elsewhere, the government’s pledge to create three million apprenticeships by 2020 has received a mixed response. Public bodies including schools, hospitals, prisons and police forces will all be set targets to take on more apprentices. The government also plans to protect the term ‘apprenticeship’ in law, in the same way as a ‘degree’ qualification is recognised. The reasoning behind the move is to give government the power to take action when the term is misused to promote low quality courses. What are your views on the government’s plans for apprenticeships? Get in touch with us at editor@sng-publishing to let us know what you think.

INDUSTRY NEWS READ THE FULL STORY IN THE NEWS SECTION OF HIP-MAGAZINE.CO.UK GET KITTED UP FOR THE NEW FOOTBALL SEASON WITH WORCESTER Leading manufacturer, Worcester, Bosch Group, has launched a new promotion, enabling installers to claim a 2015/16 football shirt of their team of choice every time they purchase a GB162 50kW boiler. Upon buying a recently-launched GB162 50kW boiler, installers will be able to redeem their preferred shirt from any of England and Scotland’s Premier League, Championship, League One and League Two clubs. The 50kW model of Worcester’s established GB162 boiler allows heating engineers to benefit from a condensing wall-hung gas-fired appliance, which is just as suited to large-scale domestic installations as it is in light commercial applications. Martyn Bridges, Director of Marketing and Technical Support at Worcester, Bosch Group comments: “With the timing of our launch coinciding with pre-season, we wanted to give as many installers as possible the chance to get the grips with our new product, while wearing their favourite team’s colours.” The Worcester promotion runs until 30th September. ○ VISIT WORCESTER-BOSCH.CO.UK

GREEN DEAL FUNDING TO END At the end of July, the government announced that there will be no further funding to the Green Deal Finance Company. According to a statement from the Department of Energy and Climate Change the move is in light of low take-up and concerns about industry standards. Energy and Climate Change Secretary Amber Rudd also announced that the Government will stop any future funding releases of the Green Deal Home Improvement Fund. The decision has no impact on existing Green Deal Finance Plans or existing Green Deal Home Improvement Fund applications and vouchers. The Green Deal was a government backed initiative to help householders identify and finance energy-saving improvements to their homes. By the end of June 2015 energy saving measures had been installed in around 10,000 properties using Green Deal finance, with an additional 5,600 Green Deal finance plans currently in progress.

Industry reaction > Neil Schofield, Head of Governmental and External Affairs at Worcester, Bosch Group, said: “While the intention behind the Green Deal may have been positive, the complexity it added to the supply chain, its unappealing interest rate, and the way in which it marginalised our network of heating engineers made success very unlikely. At a time when the Conservatives are still finding their feet on energy policy and are under pressure to reduce spending, it was always going to be difficult to justify a future for a scheme so many had already written off as a failure. In this respect, it is hard not to agree with the Government’s decision to axe what was originally hailed as its “flagship household energy efficiency programme”. > Kevin Wellman, CEO of the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) commented: “We always felt that Green Deal was flawed and clearly put home owners who took up the loan at a disadvantage, especially when they wanted to sell their home. The loan is attached to the property and added to the electricity bill, so if it was assessed for the needs of a large family wanting lots of hot water, etc., the same rule may not apply to the new occupiers who bought it. They could be paying much higher bills in the long run.”

CALOR SUPPORTS GAS SAFETY WEEK

To mark the start of Gas Safety Week (14-20 September 2015) Calor is urging installers to become LPG qualified and is offering a wide range of support to make working safely with gas and educating homeowners on best practice easier and simpler. The news comes as the UKLPG, the trade association for the LPG industry in the UK, announces that crucial safety and risk compliance information is more accessible than ever before for installers – thanks to the Gas Safe Register’s Access to Standards membership scheme. This will make it easier for small businesses employing up to ten engineers to stay up to date on technical and legislative changes, helping to improve standards across the industry. GAS SAFETY WEEK TAKES PLACE FROM THE 14 – 20 SEPTEMBER It is a national campaign aimed at both installers and homeowners to ensure the best safety and efficiency when working with and using systems that utilise gas. Coordinated by the Gas Safety Register, the industry wide campaign aims to raise awareness with the help of retailers, manufacturers, consumer bodies and the public, and reached an impressive 147 million people in 2014.

ADEY SPONSORS UK HEATING APPRENTICES ADEY Professional Heating Solutions is stepping up its support for the next generation of heating installers with a three-year title sponsorship of the re-branded UK Heating Apprentice of the Year. Support

The national HIP competition celebrates its tenth birthday in 2016 and ADEY has backed the industry apprenticeship scheme with a three-year sponsorship worth in excess of £60,000. As the main sponsor of the new HIP National Heating Apprentice of the Year competition, Europe’s No.1 manufacturer of magnetic filters is making a long-term commitment to the sector’s installers of the future.

The sponsorship will support some of the country’s most talented apprentice heating engineers at regional finals and a national final with a £2,000 cash prize shared by the overall winning student and college.

Supporting youngsters entering the industry is something the Queen’s Award winning company is dedicated to, explains ADEY Managing Director, John Vaughan. “This business was founded by Chris Adey, a former British Gas apprentice, and we understand that we have a role to play and are keen to work with the next generation of installers,” he said. “Apprenticeships are becoming an increasingly attractive option for youngsters following fulltime education. It’s important they’re given opportunities and encouragement to show their skills and we as manufacturers need to get behind great initiatives like this. “We’re delighted to play a part in launching the new national heating apprentice competition. As Chris Adey has demonstrated, with the right support tomorrow’s installers can achieve great things,” he added. “Household energy efficiency is becoming increasingly important to homeowners and is something installers are frequently asked about. It’s therefore important that apprentices are aware of system improvements that can help customers save money. Providing advice that goes beyond carrying out a repair will help set them apart from the competition as their careers progress. “Our best practice approach to system maintenance is part of this conversation. It helps explain to homeowners the benefits of regular, planned maintenance. For apprentice

This competition is an ideal way to do that and with the support of manufacturers like ADEY, prospects are much brighter for the heating installers of the future.”

FINANCING YOUR VAN PURCHASE Research from Mercedes-Benz Vans shows that despite Britain’s van drivers contributing more than £43.8 billion to the UK’s economy, nearly 60% are still being turned down for funding by traditional High Street banks. Regardless of the tax and National Insurance payments that van drivers make – each contributing more than £5,600 a year in fuel duty and tax alone, which is more than a fifth of van drivers’ entire annual income – Britain’s banks are still no-go’s for many small business van drivers.

Obtaining finance Pre-recession rates from 2007 show that 90% of business loans were successfully approved, highlighting the significant drop in obtaining finance over recent years. Finance is extremely important in helping businesses achieve their own aspirations, not least because for many in the industry, a van is not just a means of moving around, but is a vital tool for the job.

Mercedes Sprinter

While some customers want to buy, there is a big section that increasingly turns to leasing to fund their vehicle requirements. Pre-recession, around 80% were taking out Hire Purchase on their van – a loan to purchase the vehicle. In 2015, this figure

Finance is extremely important in helping businesses achieve their own aspirations... is more like 50% - proof that customers are seeking new and more effective ways to fund their van.

Current trends One of the big trends in the finance industry is now towards the hybrid products available in additional to the traditional Hire Purchase and Leasing methods, for example Contract Purchase, which guarantees future value if the customer decides to purchase at the end of their term, rather than return it. Mercedes-Benz Vans has seen a big increase in the amount of finance requested and approved to its customers, with one in three vans now funded via Mercedes-Benz Financial Services. The approval rate is 85% - a 43% greater approval rate than high street banks. So while many lenders view elements of credit risk very differently, a manufacturerassociated finance company understands the vehicles much better and what can be the best option for many businesses.

Leasing Leasing is one such option which is proving popular as it benefits initial cash flow – the 20% VAT cost has to be paid upfront in one payment as part of any type of ‘purchase’

finance, whereas with a standard Operating Lease or Finance Lease, the VAT is payable within each payment instalment. Remember that VAT within an instalment cost, or paid upfront, can easily distort a monthly payment, so bear that in mind if contemplating the difference between buying and leasing. Also it is important that businesses refer to their accountants to ascertain which is the most tax efficient way to acquire the vehicles – and this will vary depending on a multitude of factors. Currently, the number of vans in the UK from new to ten years old is around 3.3 million. Government estimations show that it could double to 6 million by 2020; vans are clearly a necessity to the UK. If you look historically at the van industry, tradition suggests that when the vehicles come to the end of ownership, it is simply replaced like-for-like. However, van operators are becoming increasingly knowledgeable about selecting the right van for its application – rightsizing.

Last year was a record-breaking year for Mercedes-Benz Financial Services. In the year, the manufacturerassociated finance company funded more vans than ever before, lending over £250 million worth of finance, which represented a significant 6.8% increase on the previous year.

LEAD UP THE

GARDEN PATH People these days who come across a lead pipe are probably in the Conservatory with Colonel Mustard, playing ‘Cluedo’. But if you find it in a plumbing system it’s nothing to joke about. Before 1970, lead was used in some parts of the UK for the underground ‘communication’ and ‘supply’ pipes connecting the water main to premises and for distributing water within them. Lead can dissolve in water as it passes through the pipes and in extreme cases, drinking the contaminated water over a prolonged period has caused lead poisoning. Lead builds up in the body, affecting mental development and behaviour. Those most at risk are infants, children and pregnant women.

For this reason, new installation of lead pipes was banned when water supply byelaws were revised in 1987/8. Already-installed lead pipes were allowed to remain in use, and since 1999 they continue to be permitted under the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations, provided they don’t cause lead in drinking water to exceed the permitted amount of 10 micrograms per litre (µg/l).

Upgrading existing supplies When upgrading the supply to existing premises or refurbishing them internally, medical

REPAIRING LEAD PIPES Certain repairs to existing lead pipes are permitted provided the amount of lead in water doesn’t exceed the limit. PERMITTED METHODS INCLUDE

01 Using lead-free solder to repair a small leak, if practicable for the lead pipe. This is similar to mending a nail-hole in a copper pipe.

02 Use of non-lead repair clamp as a temporary measure to restore the water supply pending a permanent solution. The clamp materials must be suitable where they’re in contact with drinking water and the arrangement must prevent galvanic corrosion between the repair clamp and the lead pipe.

03 Cutting out a section of the damaged lead pipe and inserting adaptors and a length of polythene pipe. Note: No water pipe should be used for earthing purposes. All metal pipes should have equipotential bonding applied and because this repair may interrupt the metallic pipe, the repairer should warn the customer to ensure the continuity of this bonding.

Repairs to lead pipe using wiped lead joints or by cutting out the damaged section and inserting a length of lead pipe are unacceptable. This is because of the prohibition on the use of ‘new’ lead materials and the risk of fresh lead surfaces being exposed.

authorities and water suppliers recommend removal of any lead pipe which is found. Some water suppliers have lead replacement programs which may assist customers who wish to replace their lead supplies. If water samples show that lead exceeds 10 µg/l, the source of this lead must be traced and removed. In these cases, if owners replace all lead pipes which are their responsibility, the water company has a legal duty to replace its lead communication pipe, if owners request it.

Lead-based solder has also caused lead poisoning. The Water Fittings Regulations require solder to be lead-free where used on pipework supplying water for cooking, washing and drinking. The Push-fit People

In recent months there has been a lot of talk about the skills shortage being faced in Great Britain across the plumbing, building and engineering sectors. A threat to the economy, but an opportunity for trainees in the industry as salaries soar, it is imperative that those learning the tricks of the trades are taught the best practice at an early stage of their career. Nigel Sanger, Technical Manager in Plumbing at JG Speedfit.

E H T G N I N I A TR N O I T A R E N E NEXT G

As well as the government’s new plumbing apprenticeship that was recently launched to give Engineering Technician status, UK manufacturers are also recognising the importance in offering training programmes and opportunities. Companies, such as JG Speedfit, are leading the way in training the future generation of plumbers. As the development of the apprenticeship scheme is set to replace the old frameworks by 2017, JG Speedfit has already started its preparations for the next academic year as it continues to lead the way in delivering tuition and mentoring to young plumbers.

Getting to grips with push-fit systems At JG Speedfit, plumbers are trained to Advanced NVQ Level 3 in its Heating and Ventilation Apprenticeship, while it also supplies plastic push-fit fittings to colleges, training young plumbers and providing tutorials. JG Speedfit has developed college packs, working with tutors and lecturers to develop the content for students to help them with their studies. A big advantage to the students is the flexibility of push-fit systems. When undertaking the more traditional methods of soldering copper, mistakes can often happen and the operation has to be restarted,

resulting in wastage and frustration. Push-fit fittings allow students to remedy any mistakes they make easily. This is not really possible when soldering copper as once it is used it quickly becomes scrap metal. Push-fit fittings are not exclusive to plastic pipes. They are intricately designed to be suitable for use with copper pipes, meaning young plumbers aren’t restricted to working with plastic pipes.

Companies, such as JG Speedfit, are leading the way in training the future generation of plumbers.... As the industry moves towards plastic plumbing innovations, the push-fit fitting provides young plumbers with a core tool for the future. This is increasingly important, as plastic is predicted to take a further upturn in the industry due to the increase in end users demanding a quick and convenient service. Providing young plumbers with the necessary experience and confidence to work with plastic equipment seems the obvious route.

Underfloor heating & smart controls Underfloor heating and smart heating controls is a rapidly growing area thanks to the innovations in home automation and this digital revolution needs to be understood.

JG Speedfit has introduced a dedicated technical team that not only help the future generation of plumbers, but also installers to ensure they have full understanding and of the new systems and products available to them.

Face-to-face tutorials are a great method of training, however, within the industry time is precious and taking time out to attend a course is not always possible. As plumbing is in the midst of a digital revolution constant learning is crucial. Therefore, free, easy-toaccess tutorials are a great way to digest information quickly but effectively. Broadening horizons to these new systems means that installers will be ready for the eventual shift towards a totally digitalised home, meaning they won’t miss out on crucial business opportunities. Technology is forever evolving and adapting and the plumbing industry is no different. Combining both together means a greater service can be offered, customers benefit greatly, especially over energy and cost savings, and with digital innovations providing platforms for young plumbers the skills shortage can be addressed with new innovations in learning. ○ For further information visit speedfit.co.uk

E C I O H C E EVEN MOR G N I L A E S D A FOR THRE Achieving a lasting seal is no longer a hit-or-miss process that is messy, timeconsuming or wasteful. The new breed of pipe sealants has turned a complex and temperamental task into one whose consistent quality is easily assured.

For example, you don’t need any special training to use LOCTITE® 55 Anaerobic Pipe Sealing Cord; just follow the instructions on the pack. Simply wrap it around the male threads, use the recommended number of turns for the size of threads and assemble. That’s all there is to a leak-proof joint.

LOCTITE® 55 is easily applied, directly from a handy pocket-sized, protective container with built-in cutter. It seals against hot or cold water, gas, compressed air, industrial and heating oils and complies with all the necessary UK and European regulations. It can also be backed-off for alignment without fear of leakage. You can use this clean and versatile technology to seal threads up to 4 inches and on cast iron, steel, brass, copper, chrome, nickelplated and galvanised surfaces, stainless steel and plastic parts. So what about the old methods – how does LOCTITE® 55 compare? Non-curing and solvent based sealing components and PTFE tapes have been commonly used

but in every case the pros outweigh the cons. Take PTFE tape for example. It gives a good initial seal, resists chemical attack and acts as a lubricant which can be advantageous but, this action also prompts the fitting to loosen under dynamic loads. The result is loss of clamping force and leakage. It also encourages over-tightening of fasteners, adding stress or fracturing parts.

More choice Having experienced what the LOCTITE® anaerobic sealing cord can do, plumbers are increasingly carrying LOCTITE® sealing compound too and one product that is proving very popular is LOCTITE® 577. Suitable for bonding all coarse threads, this general purpose sealant was already time-served in the industrial market before being introduced to plumbing. It is a slow-cure product and provides a medium strength bond with excellent chemical and thermal resistance. The absence of air needed for this product to cure is achieved by the sealant displacing the air gaps between the threads. It is clean and easy to apply and can be used on the most popular sizes of pipe fittings, protecting the mated threaded areas against corrosion. LOCTITE® 577 also locks the fitting and resists vibrational loosening. It will not creep, shrink or block systems and any excess material can simply be wiped away. This is a very important benefit over sealing a joint with non-curing hemp and paste solutions. These pastes are made from oils and fillers and although they lubricate and compact into

Having experienced what the LOCTITE® anaerobic sealing cord can do, plumbers are increasingly carrying LOCTITE® sealing compound too... the threads creating a seal, they provide no locking. Furthermore they can squeeze out under pressure, have poor solvent resistance and do not work on parallel threads. The anaerobic alternative such as LOCTITE® 577, seals regardless of assembly torque and to the burst rating of the pipe, providing controlled disassembly torque for subsequent maintenance. Specific grades of anaerobic sealant are available for use with potable water, gas, LPG and heating oils. In practice however, a versatile product such as LOCTITE® 577, can be used for the majority of applications where metal fittings are involved. ○ loctite.co.uk | t. 01442 278000

FACT FILE Wilo’s series of glandless pumps Wilo-Yonos PICO, Wilo-Stratos PICO and Wilo-Stratos – are seeing increasing popularity across the board. They are relevant for nearly all applications for heating, air-conditioning and cooling in the building services area – from the family home to a small commercial or industrial building.

HIGH EFFICIENCY SMALL CIRCULATORS Is ErP Legislation working? There is still a lack of realisation in some circles, of the amount of energy that is used day to day by pumps as a proportion of energy use in the average home. And every home pretty much, has one. Once understood, it’s easy to see why it was a prime area for attention when looking for ways of reducing energy use and reducing carbon emissions. In today’s vernacular, it was something of a ‘no brainer’.

Small circulating pumps are a key component of all wet heating systems in the UK...... Small circulating pumps are a key component of all wet heating systems in the UK – whether traditional boiler driven systems or new renewable systems. They perform as standalone pumps or as integrated pumps in combi and system boilers and they keep the water circulating in underfloor heating systems too. They are responsible for a much higher percentage of overall household electricity usage than many still realise which is why old uncontrolled pumps were targeted by European legislation as a key way of reducing energy usage in the home, reducing energy bills and reducing emissions. They offered a

real way of making strides towards meeting the ambitious environmental targets set by the UK Government and European legislators.

New legislation Before January 2013, small circulating pump selection was often made on price. Although some installers had loyalty to a brand, in many people’s eyes, a pump was a pump was a pump. If it did the job, it did the job. From January 2013 high efficiency pumps were demanded by EU Legislation – the much vaunted ErP Legislation - and whilst there was initially some resistance to comply, as 2013 unfolded and availability of anything other than high efficiency options declined, installers began to buy and install and specifiers began to specify the high efficiency options. Now, high efficiency pumps have been accepted and are being installed in their thousands across the UK. Despite this embracing of the new legislation and availability of the new ErP compliant circulating pumps, the fact remains that there are still many millions of old, uncontrolled small circulators operating in heating systems across the UK. So there is still huge potential

to further reduce energy use and energy bills in the months and years ahead.

Sales increase Wilo and other pump manufacturers have begun to see their high efficiency models begin to sell well. Helped by the legislation, there was little choice but to utilise the new high efficiency models. Wilo has recently announced it is celebrating the sale of 28 million small circulators in the past ten years. Wilo’s high efficiency small pumps – in particular the Wilo-Yonos PICO – have made a huge impact in the UK heating and air conditioning sector over the past two and a half years, since the arrival of the ErP legislation in January of 2013. The arrival of the EU ErP Directive has clearly begun to make significant inroads in the energy consumption figures, and as a result the emissions figures. There’s a long way still to go to hit the targets being demanded. But the age of the energy efficient pump is very much here. Y A W Y S A E E ERP: TH

) Directive no doubt rP (E ts uc od Pr d te la -re gy The arrival of the Ener erns for installers. nc co w ne of s rie se a brings with it Here, regulatory marketing manager at Baxi, Jeff House, offers insight on how the Directive will change things and the tools that are out there to make easier work of the transition. On the 26th of September, the long-anticipated ErP Directive comes into force – the biggest shake up the industry has seen since Part L of the Building Regulations made condensing boilers compulsory ten years ago. The new Directive is split up into two sections, both of which installers must take into consideration. Firstly, the Ecodesign Directive will mean space heaters that haven’t met efficiency requirements can no longer be placed into the supply chain by manufacturers. Secondly, the Energy Labelling Directive will mean all affected products have to come with an efficiency rating and label, from A+++ to G. So what does this mean for installers? Despite common assumptions that ErP will be incredibly complicated, in reality it will not affect the installer’s day-to-day as much as expected. Once the directive comes into play, installers will have to provide an energy label for any boiler installed, as well as a ‘package label’ for the system if several components are installed at one time. This may sound complicated and like a lot of added paperwork, however in principle it’s a simple task that should only take an extra ten minutes. To help make the transition easier, there are many resources available to support installers. At Baxi, for example, we have launched an ErP toolkit which includes an ErP calculator for producing package labels, frequently asked questions and information packs, all of which are hosted on a dedicated section of our website. We’ve also launched a new technical helpline to field ErP-specific queries. To help get to grips with these new processes, investing in training will go a long way. Baxi offers training on ErP for Gas Safe registered installers, as part of the free product training offered across our 14 UK training centres. The Directive will also provide lucrative opportunities for installers. For the first time, ErP will bring total transparency across the Europe-wide heating market, giving consumers one single criterion to compare heating solutions on a like-for-like basis to help make an informed choice. This is a chance for Installers to act as ‘energy advisors’ for customers to sell packages of heating systems rather than just a single element, as well as ensuring homeowners are maximising their energy saving potential. The introduction of ErP may mean changes in the way that installers approach their work, however with such a wealth of support to ease you into the transition, it will create opportunities that should be embraced. As consumers become increasingly interested in green technology, and the pace for meeting the Government’s target to cut carbon by 20 per cent by 2020 gains momentum, there is greater profit potential for the installer in the know. So, for those who haven’t, surely it’s time to get ErP ready?

THINKING SMART

A recent study discovered the popularity of smart heating controls is increasing at a rapid rate. In fact, the number of European homes with smart thermostats nearly doubled between 2013 and 2014, growing by 96 per cent year-on-year to reach 0.7 million. Simon May, Product Manager at Drayton Controls, explains why installers need to become familiar with smart heating controls to maximise their own business, and discusses the best solution for quick and easy installation. The cost of domestic energy is a big concern for budget-conscious homeowners. In a typical UK household, more than half the money spent on fuel bills goes towards providing heating and hot water. In addition, the cost of energy has increased by nearly 170 per cent in the last decade. Despite this, almost 8 million UK homes have no room thermostat and over 70 per cent lack the minimum levels of controls specified in the most recent Building Regulations. However, one type of heating control is catching on far more quickly than traditional devices – the smart thermostat. So what is it about internet-connected products that makes them more appealing to the homeowner?

35 million people in the UK own a smartphone, and one in six UK adults look at their phone more than 50 times a day, so the convenience that smart thermostats offer combined with the familiarity of a smartphone app is making them a big hit with consumers.

to adjust heating schedules on the go, which means homeowners are able to reduce their energy consumption by tailoring heating periods to fit in with their lifestyle and routine.

Wireless wonders Although smart controls are popular with the consumer, some of these devices can cause headaches for the installer. This is because they often require tricky wiring, meaning the installation process is complicated.

Smart explosion Smart thermostats allow the user to remotely manage the temperature of their property using an app on their smartphone or tablet, no matter where they are. For example, if a homeowner has left the house for work and forgot to turn the heating off, they have the power at their fingertips to do so with the touch of a button, meaning they have greater freedom and control over the amount of energy they are using. It’s also really easy

Some also have a labourious set-up process that involves inputting a large amount of data about the homeowner, which can result in significantly increased installation time, and technical issues can that could result in additional callbacks.

However, by selecting a simple smart thermostat that is wireless and features a standard backplate, the installer can make the job as easy as possible by simply removing the old thermostat and retrofitting the new internet-enabled control.

R A E W K R O W S R E THE SNICK REVOLUTION IN N O I T C E T O R P E E KN Knee injuries are commonplace amongst tradesmen including plumbing and heating engineers. Sore and swollen knee joints are highly aggravating, but prevention is far easier than cure by taking the proper steps to look after you knees. And, with the latest revolutionary kneepad, that’s now possible.

The knee is one of the largest and most complex joints in the body and there are different types of knee injuries. The most common is probably Housemaid’s Knee or Bursitis, which is caused by kneeling for long periods of time or by repetitive knee movements such as crouching down and standing up. Fluid builds up in the Bursa - which is the sack of fluid that cushions the knee joints – causing swelling, soreness and stiffness in the joint. The condition is both preventable and treatable, however in more prolonged or chronic cases, continuous pain and stiffness may result in surgery.

So what is the answer? As you might expect knee protection on site is covered by EU legislation which sets out the functional requirements with which kneepad manufacturers must comply. However, there’s far more to the design and operation of effective kneepads that will prevent long term knee injuries. There have been various types of knee guards over the years. Strap-on pods that cut into the back of your knees, foam rubber mats and basic pads. The most effective kneepads have to work properly with the work trousers they’re used with, staying in precisely the right position to ensure reliable knee protection.

That’s what you get with the revolutionary KneeGuard System from Snickers. Most workwear manufacturers supply kneepads for their work trousers which vary in price, quality and effectiveness. But the adage of ‘you get what you pay for’ means that at the bottom end of the market you can now get a pair of rubber kneepads for less than a fiver with no guarantee of comfort or protection. Protecting your knees is important. Injuries may mean you cannot work and so you need to invest carefully to protect your health and welfare on site. The world’s first ‘active’ kneepads from Snickers Workwear are proven to last twice as long as other kneepads and take cutting-edge knee protection to a completely new level with the revolutionary D3O® materials.

What’s D3O®? D3O® is a unique and active and specially engineered rubbery material comprising intelligent molecules which ‘flow’ with you as you move. On shock they lock together to absorb the impact energy to provide highfrequency protection. The durable D3O® material also features an extremely slow compression rate, ensuring that the kneepads keep their shape with Snickers Work Trousers during hard work and over a long period of time. So, if you work a lot on your knees, this material will give you by far the best, long lasting knee protection available.

THE PERFECT KNEEPADS    

Work in tandem with work trousers Stay in position Are adjustable Hard-wearing on the outside and soft on the inside  High sides prevent knees from sliding

COPPER INITIATIVE SUPPORT FOR YOUNG PLUMBERS Copper has long been the material of choice for plumbing engineers. Feedback from plumbers and plumbing students at trade shows around the country tell us that copper is still very much the pipework material of choice. The reliability, durability, versatility and good looks mean that copper reflects the professionalism of the installer. It is essential that each new generation of plumbers is equipped to design and install copper to very high standards and the Copper Initiative provides technical information on new developments in the copper industry as well as on the more traditional installation techniques. As part of our commitment to education, the Copper Initiative sponsors a number of plumbing competitions, including the HIP Apprentice of the Year. We believe that people should be encouraged to develop skills that will equip them to realise a career in the plumbing industry. The Apprentice competitions put those skills to the test and allow all of us to demonstrate the fantastic abilities of young plumbers to the industry, and to the general public.

As part of our commitment to education, the Copper Initiative sponsors a number of plumbing competitions, including the HIP Apprentice of the Year.

Copper Club Every good plumber possesses practical skills underpinned by a vast knowledge of plumbing theory. The Copper Initiative has a wealth of information available on how to correctly design and install copper pipework systems. Our Copper Club packs can be obtained simply by completing the on-line form on our website: copperplumbing.org.uk

Support materials Installation Tips is the technical manual that covers just about everything you might want to know about copper pipework systems. Easy to follow guidance is given on many topics including jointing techniques, bending, pipe sizing for both water and gas installations, the correct choice of solders and fluxes, pressure testing and locating pipework in suspended floors. Copper the Modern Solution describes the two flame-free jointing options for copper – push-fit and press fittings. For those places where you don’t want to use a flame, in roof spaces with combustible materials for

example, push-fit and press fittings both offer alternatives to soldering. Copper Pipework Compendium CD, incorporating Make the Right Start, brings together all of the educational information produced by the Copper Initiative. In addition to the many pdf’s of the literature the CD contains webcasts (narrated PowerPoint presentations) and a number of question & answer sections where students can test their knowledge. We also have a Facebook page – Copper Initiative – which allows you to follow our activities and news when you are on the go. ○ copperplumbing.org.uk or follow us on / copper initiative

Largely as a result of the introduction of Part P of the Building Regulations, more and more gas fitters, plumbers and heating installers are now testing and certifying their own electrical installations.

! F L E S R U O Y Y F I T CER There are plenty of courses to provide you with training and qualifications, but you’ll also need to buy some test equipment. This advice from Simon Wood of Megger will help you make the right choices.

To certify installations, you’ll have to carry out four types of test: continuity tests, insulation tests, earth loop impedance tests and RCD tests. When you’re looking at test equipment, your first decision is whether you want separate instruments for each of these tests or just one instrument that does it all.

Testers and ratings

When it comes to electrical installation test equipment, there are plenty of options, but don’t fall into the trap of think that all instruments are much the same. There are big differences, some of which affect not just convenience and ease of use, but also safety.

It’s largely a matter of personal choice, but most people these days settle for a single multifunction tester (MFT) as these are more convenient to carry around, and they usually cost a little less than buying separate instruments. Whichever option you choose, however, there’s one thing that you absolutely must consider – the instrument CAT rating. This rating indicates the instrument’s ability to withstand transients – voltage spikes that occur from time to time on every mains supply. If an instrument is subjected to a transient that it is unable to handle, it may catch fire or even explode, with a high risk of injury to the user. Transients are worst at the point where the supply enters the building, and for use at this location, only an instrument with a CAT IV rating is suitable. At locations after the main switch in a domestic installation or the main distribution board in a commercial installation, transient levels are lower, and a CAT III instrument is suitable. CAT II and CAT I instruments have limited safe

applications, and are not worth considering for plumbers and HVAC installers.

Safety Continuing with the safety theme, it’s worth finding out what happens if you accidentally misuse the instrument – by, for example, attempting to carry out a continuity or insulation test on a live circuit. A good instrument will simply abort the test and provide audible and visual warnings, with no harm to the instrument or the user. Robust physical construction is also worth looking for, as there’s a very good chance that sooner later the instrument will be dropped or stepped on. All of the comments in this article apply equally to separate instruments and MFTs but it is worth noting that some of the latest MFTs offer extra functions, such as facilities for earth resistance and three-phase testing. These functions aren’t usually needed for normal domestic installation testing, but there are applications – such as testing installations in mobile homes and factories – where they are very useful. If you decide to go down the selfcertification route – and there are many good reasons for doing so – choose your test equipment with care. Follow the recommendations in this article, and you can be sure that it will give you safe, long and reliable service combined with an excellent return on investment.

SITE PREPARATION Understanding and carrying out site preparation and pipe work fabrication techniques for domestic plumbing and heating systems

This unit covers many aspects of everyday work for plumbers. Many of these processes you will have used in your job or in the workshop but the techniques may differ slightly from how you have been instructed. Pipe bending is always a point for discussion as different tradesmen use different styles of pipe bending techniques. If you do notice more than one method of pipe bending then maybe you could raise this with your lecturer as a point for discussion. We will also be looking at using different materials for pipe work and different methods of jointing. On the HIP website you will find a range of excellent short practical skills videos which have been provided to help you.

GROUP WORK Below is a draft of how a job, from start to finish, may run.

> > > > > > > > >

Customer asks a plumber for a quote. Plumber visits the property, measures up and estimates the materials required. Plumber contacts the merchants and gets a quotation for the materials. This enables the plumber to finalise a quote for the customer. In our case, the customer accepts and the quotation is confirmed in writing. The plumber orders the material from the merchants; on delivery of the materials, the plumber receives a delivery note. If, at any time, the customer changes their mind on the job to be carried out, a variation order should be obtained. The work is carried out to meet the customer’s requirements. The plumber receives the invoice requesting payment for the materials used, and accordingly invoices the customer for the work that has been completed. A remittance advice is sometimes issued with payment. In small groups, using this guide, discuss the words highlighted and write down what each word means and feedback as a class. Use the space provided below and on page 38.

MATERIALS USED IN PLUMBING INSTALLATIONS During your time as a plumber you will use many different types of materials, and each one will have its own unique working properties.

It is important that we recognise these properties to ensure we choose the correct material for a given installation. Pipes, fittings and jointing materials acceptable for Water Regulation purposes are listed in the Water Fittings and Materials Directory. Also, the regulations state the minimum requirements for pipe joints and fittings. In domestic plumbing installations the main materials that you will work with are copper, low carbon steel and plastic. To a lesser extent, and usually only on maintenance work, you will also come across cast iron and stainless steel. COPPER AND PLASTIC JOINTING METHODS With jointing, the different types of materials used are very different. Visit pegleryorkshire.co.uk/EN/VideosAndTraining/Videos so you can learn about some of the different jointing methods. Here is a step-by-step plastic push-fit jointing method, for Hep2O fittings: hep2o.wavin.com/Hep2o/Jointing.html

BENDING COPPER TUBE BY MACHINE In terms of bending copper pipe, machine bending is the most common method. Bending machines can be either hand held (hand bender) or free-standing (stand bender), and they work on the principle of leverage. The advantages of machine bending against using manufactured fittings are many so take a few minutes and list a minimum of four:
