CAN YOU SPOT A FAKE? | HIP

CAN YOU SPOT “BEWARE OF FAKE A FAKE? CE 'CHINA IMPORT' MARKINGS”

The importance of knowing the genuine from the fake in the pump industry is crucial, says Oli Thurlow, Business Development Representative at Wilo UK. GET IN THE KNOW! Making your mark in the heating industry requires hard work, determination, and an eye for detail. When it comes to spotting fake systems from their genuine counterparts, getting it right early on sets you on a path to success. This has never been more important than today as the UK market is flooded with counterfeit pumps disguised as genuine models.

CONSUMERS LOSING OUT Exports from the Far East of non-compliant pumps have overwhelmed the UK market in recent years. Experts reckon that 100,000 non-compliant pumps are sold in the UK every year, costing consumers hundreds of pounds a year.

COMPLIANCE IS KEY It’s now estimated that circa 10% of 1 million central heating pumps that are sold each year in the UK are fakes. In the current cost-of-living crisis, not having a compliant central heating pump is costing consumers even more. The sale of fake pumps is over the counter and blatant in the industry. If you’re equipped with the tools to spot a non-compliant pump before installation, you can step in and save consumers before it’s too late.

TOP TIPS FOR SPOTTING A FAKE: ■ Triple check for correct information – this should be on the pump name plate, packaging, and technical documentation ■ Beware of fake CE markings –

If something seems off, it’s always best to double check. Don’t get into hot water!

some pumps bear the ‘China Export’ logo, ‘CE’, but are being fraudulently faked to look like the CE marking

■ Know your CE documents – CE marking should be supported by appropriate documentation, including a Declaration of Conformity (DoC) ■ Correct CE markings – CE labels need a serial number, product type, supply voltage, performance data and contact details for the manufacturer.

“APPROXIMATELY 10% OF THE 1 MILLION CENTRAL HEATING PUMPS SOLD ANNUALLY IN THE UK ARE FAKES!” LINKS TO EXPERT GUIDANCE: Wilo UK: www.wilo.co.uk The British Pump Manufacturers Association (BPMA): www.bpma.org.uk

Mess it up and you could be losing out on some serious cash.

Let’s use a bathroom installation project as an example.

Q U I C K FA C T

Begin by visiting the customer's place to assess the bathroom's needs. During this initial meet, it’s super important to understand the customer’s goals and desires for the project.

Next up, you'll want to dive into the money side of things

MATERIAL COSTS: List out everything from baths and basins to pipes and fittings. Total up what it's going to cost you.

Use a tool like Excel or Google Sheets to keep track of these numbers and sum them up.

Once you've crunched the numbers, draft a clear quote for your client. If VAT is part of your pricing, be transparent about it in the final quote. They should know the total cost, inclusive of VAT.

LABOUR COSTS: Estimate the hours you'll be on the job and set a fair hourly rate for your work. ADDITIONAL EXPENSES: Factor in things like your travel, skip hire, and the wear on your tools.

PROFIT MARGIN: Remember to add a reasonable mark-up (typically around 10%-15%) on materials to keep your business thriving.

“A 10% -15% MARK-UP IS NORMAL”

COPPER TUBE BENDING TECHNIQUES As part of your plumbing course you will be taught how to correctly bend copper tube. It’s important to understand the correct techniques in order to pass your assessments and to help you with copper installations on-site.

B

oth half-hard (R250) and annealed (R220) types of copper tube can be used to create bends. However, hard-drawn (R290) copper tube is not suitable for this process.

FOR A SIMPLE 90º BEND: ■ Determine the position of the bending mark ■ Measure the required end-to-centre length and add half of the tube’s Outside Diameter (OD) ■ Mark this point on the tube (Refer to Figure 1A).

DEFINITIONS OF COMMON BENDS: ■ Offset: Allows a pipe to manoeuvre around an obstacle while returning to its original path. ■ Double Offset: Comprises two changes in direction, useful for navigating around multiple obstacles. ■ Passover (or Crossover): Enables one pipe to cross over another without making contact.

FIGURE 1A

FOR A SECOND BEND: ■ Identify the required centre-to-centre length ■ From this length, measure from the inside to the back of the required bend (Refer to Figure 1B) ■ Mark this point on the tube.

■ Kick (or Swept Bend): Quickly changes a pipe's direction by 90 degrees to bypass obstructions.

90º BENDING MARK: Figure 2 illustrates how to accurately position the bending mark in the machine for 90° bends. If more than one bend is required on a single length of tube, ensure that all bends align correctly in the same plane before pulling the second bend.

In our example, if the offset required is 75mm, you would calculate 600 – 75 = 525mm. To establish the bending mark for the second bend of a double offset: ■ Align the first bend parallel to a straight edge, with the inside edge of the tube at the required distance from this straight edge ■ Ensure the position of the bending mark aligns with the straight edge ■ Reposition the tube in the bender so that the bending mark forms a tangent to the former. ■ Pull the second bend parallel to the first, (see Figure 4).

FIGURE 2

OFFSETS (BENDING SINGLE OR DOUBLE OFFSETS): For bending single or double offsets, a 600mm folding rule can be useful in determining a suitable angle for the bends. As shown in Figure 3, stagger the ends of the rule to achieve the desired angle.

FIGURE 4

■ Subtract the required offset size from 600mm ■ Close the rule to this length ■ Bend to the angle formed, using the rule as a guide.

“REMEMBER: PRACTICE MAKES PERMANENT! TO SAVE COPPER WASTAGE, PRACTISE THESE BENDS USING A FLEXIBLE METAL TUBE MATERIAL SUCH AS TECTITE.” DID YOU KNOW?

THERMAL EXPANSION

You've got to know your plumbing materials like the back of your TikTok feed. Here’s what you need to know.

S

cience in plumbing isn't just textbook talk. Ever heard of thermal expansion? In short: materials expand and contract with heat. You just need to know which ones do, and to make allowances for them.

THERMAL EXPANSION Most materials tend to expand when they're heated. This happens because all substances are made up of little groups of atoms called molecules, and when they get heated, these molecules start moving around more energetically. As a result, the molecules spread out from each other, causing the materials to take up more space or volume. Considering material expansion and contraction is vital in plumbing systems. Neglecting to consider this can compromise the system, causing breakdowns and leaks. So, it's definitely something you don't want to overlook!

For FREE plumbing revision resources, check out Ian Hall's 'Plumbing Studies' website.

MATERIAL EXPANSION Material expansion can be calculated using this formula: Length (m) × temperature rise (°C) × Coefficient of linear expansion This table shows the coefficient values for some of the most common materials used in the plumbing industry.
