PLUMBER PROFILE:

DREW STYLES Award-winning plumber and social media extraordinaire Drew Styles chatted to us about why he got into plumbing and how he uses social media in his work. Drew, who won the UK Plumber of the Year 2017/18, runs Drew Styles Plumbing & Heating based in Wigan. HIP Magazine: How did you get into plumbing? DS: I’m the fourth generation in my family. I’ve done it all my life. I wanted to do it from when I was a kid – it was my dream and luckily I managed to do it. Every holiday I had growing up, I was down at my granddad’s working for him. HIP: Did you do an apprenticeship? DS: I did an apprenticeship with a housing association and I worked there – including my apprenticeship – for ten years before I went out on my own. HIP: How long have you been a plumber? DS: My grandma says I was six when I did my first job! I’ve been doing it forever really. I’ve been qualified for 12 years now. I started straight after school. HIP: What do you believe makes your company different? DS: It is a bespoke plumbing and heating service by the bearded wonder plumber. HIP: What’s your favourite part of the job? DS: Probably installing, I love taking a system that’s not efficient or not working properly and making it work ten times better than before. HIP: Which brands are you a fan of? DS: Recently, mainly Vaillant and Glow-worm. They are a really good fit for my company, they help me 08

expand on what I’ve got. HIP: What advice would you give to people looking to get into the industry? DS: Listen to everything everybody tells you. Make your own mind up later on whether it was good or bad advice, but just listen. HIP: How do you use social media as a plumber? DS: It’s a great way to be in contact with manufacturers and learn about new things out there. Learn off people like Den Hollingworth (@Doitlikedenbo) and Wayne Kirby (@2StarKirbs) how to do things on a completely other level. They are the best installers by a long way. You can learn about training days and talk rubbish about shiny pipes! HIP: Which social media platforms do you use? DS: Twitter and Instagram, mainly. I’d say Instagram and Twitter are definitely more for within the trade, but Facebook is good for customers to get in contact with you. I try and put up pictures of everything I can but you don’t want to do the same thing all the time; it’s trying to keep things interesting while showing what you can do. HIP: What do you do outside of work? DS: Work! That’s the joy of working for yourself, you never really stop. I do go to the gym though.

HIP: How would you describe yourself in three words? DS: Bearded wonder plumber. HIP: What couldn’t you live without? DS: Mrs Styles!

WOMEN IN PLUMBING SPECIAL This issue we are celebrating women in plumbing. With an ever-growing Twitter community and numerous established trade shows and conferences existing across the UK, there are more and more women choosing this trade every year. We still have a long way to go for it to be an even gender split, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t already have some pretty awesome women in the plumbing industry. We want to introduce you to some of them, from apprentices to established plumbers to key marketing figures to the President (yes, you read that correctly!)

BECKY BATES Becky Bates has been a plumber for ten years; she runs her own business, BB Plumbing, which she set up in London and has since moved to Wales.

HIP Magazine: How did you get into plumbing? Becky Bates: Ten years ago I was a sign writer, nothing to do with the trade. I was just a bit fed up in my job and I saw an advert in the paper to train to be a plumber. It was one of these intense courses; I got my Level 2 and basically went out on my own straightaway. HIP: Did you encounter any difficulties from being a woman in the industry? BB: My dad’s an engineer and I’ve grown up in the workshop with the lads, so when the banter – I hate that word - but when that starts, from a young age I’ve built up a thick skin. I do think that is a problem for a lot of these girls coming into the environment. They haven’t had the experiences I’ve had, so they are going to be a bit more sensitive to it, of course they will be. It shouldn’t be happening. Most of my experience has been pretty good. I have had a handful of experiences of guys putting you down because you’re a girl, not thinking you can do the job as well. But you soon prove them wrong by getting on with it and doing a good job. It shouldn’t have to be like that, but unfortunately you do have to do that little bit more and try to kind of prove yourself. HIP: How do events like the WIT Conference 2018 help women in trade? BB: The conference was brilliant - it was so good to see so many women together. It’s that visibility thing, showing that there are women in the trade. For me, it’s just about all of us getting on with it and just doing a great job and helping each other. There’s a long way to go, but it was a very inspiring day. HIP: What’s your favourite part of the job? BB: The variety, that every day is different and getting to meet some incredible people. I have had some fantastic customers in my time. Also the freedom: I’m my own boss, I can choose the hours I work, can choose if I want to work my absolute socks off or just chill out a bit. And the satisfaction as well. When you go in and solve a problem or create a lovely bathroom you get massive job satisfaction. Visit her website at www.bbplumbing1.co.uk

TRACEY RICHARDSON Recently elected, Tracey Richardson is the current President of The Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) and she is the first female to hold the title.

HIP Magazine: How did you get into plumbing? Tracey Richardson: By accident! I was doing a resettlement course whilst I was in the RAF to take care of my own home and the resettlement clerk said I’d never be out of a job as a plumber, because I love DIY. I knew a previous RAF colleague who was in plumbing so I was able to do work experience with him whilst I studied and then I went on to do my NVQ with him. Whilst studying, I set up my business, which focussed on small property maintenance jobs to start with, then moved on to bigger jobs such as bathrooms and then onto doing gas work and my Level 3 NVQ. HIP: What’s your favourite thing about the plumbing industry? TR: Making something work. It’s problem solving and sometimes it can be frustrating but I enjoy the end result. It’s nice to give someone the ‘wow’ factor and to see someone’s reaction. I used to send out feedback forms and some that came back were really positive. HIP: Does being a female in the industry ever affect your job? TR: Customers sometimes feel that a female is more trustworthy but I used to wonder what makes them think that. Generally speaking I get a positive response. I appeared at a job once and someone was surprised that I was a lady but that just created some banter. After 20 years in the RAF you learn what is friendly banter and what is below the belt but I’ve never seen that negative side from any customer nor from my peers. HIP: Tell us about being President of The CIPHE. TR: The past presidents have been so supportive and they actually told me to go for it in the first place; they’re people I’ve always respected. It was a surreal moment when it dawned on me that I’d got the position! I hope it will encourage more females into the industry in a subtle manner and hopefully that applies to the presidency, too. I will do the best of my ability. What barriers are there? My main focus is to try and get another recognised qualification that isn’t just a quick option that we can use alongside the trailblazer, as some people don’t want to do their Level 3 or gas qualifications so the trailblazer isn’t going to fit them. I want to try and make the industry more regulated. I would also like to see all of the trade organisations and awarding bodies pulling together by finding a common ground. There’s not actually that much separation as everyone wants the same outcome.

HIP Magazine: How did you get into plumbing?

TAYLA WILEMAN

Tayla was the 2017 HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year winner and she has stayed on at CV Lane and Son in Coalville since completing her apprenticeship there.

Tayla Wileman: I decided to go into plumbing because I’ve always wanted to be hands-on and practical. An apprenticeship throws you in the deep end and you get to learn little tricks of the trade that you don’t get taught in college. I tried very hard to get an apprenticeship. I handed out letters, constantly phoned different companies and offered to work for free but in the end my nanna got me the job at CV Lane and Son as they fitted her heating system and she put a good word in for me! HIP: Does being a female in the industry ever affect your job? TW: Being a female in the industry can affect the job if you let it. We are all equal to men and we can do just as good a job as they can. There have been times that I’ve received sexist comments like ‘are you the secretary?’ or ‘are you here to clean up?’ however I don’t let things like this bother me as at the end of the day I’m there to fix their problems no matter what my gender is. HIP: Where do you hope to be in a few years’ time? TW: In a few years’ time I hope to have a few more qualifications like my commercial gas, unvented cylinders and my oil. It’s onwards and upwards!

HIP Magazine: How did you first get into plumbing? Lauren Winter: In 2011 I started the Level 2 plumbing and heating course. That December I found out I was pregnant and because there was lead on the course I couldn’t finish it, so I started working in retail. I found that pretty boring so I’ve gone back to plumbing and I’ve been on the Level 2 course since September. HIP: What is it like being a female plumber?

LAUREN WINTER

Lauren Winter is a Level 2 Plumbing apprentice at Coventry College who was recently recognised with a Screwfix Trade Apprentice 2018 Award.

LW: Whilst out working with some of the lads they can be a bit laddy towards each other, but when I am asked to do something it’s quite polite. There’s a lot of respect there which is always very good. To begin with, trying to find work, people didn’t quite accept me. I had to prove I was serious about it, so I went and bought a van! It did feel like people didn’t take me seriously being female. Whether they thought I’m not as strong as some guys I don’t know, but ultimately there’s a lot of jobs I can still do, especially the finer ones that men can’t do because they want to get in and get the job done as quickly as possible. HIP: What are your ambitions? LW: I’d quite like my own business - a female-only business covering Coventry and Warwickshire. My daughter Ellie is now five. In ten years’ time she is going to be starting to look for work – hopefully I’ll have her as my apprentice. She already has the Timberland work boots and plumbing trousers!

ELLEN AMBROSE Having picked up knowledge typing up notes from her husband’s jobs, Ellen decided to learn the trade herself and began her own business, Cheesman’s Plumbers, in 1999.

HIP Magazine: How did you get into plumbing? Ellen Ambrose: My ex-husband! He was a plumber and at the time I wasn’t working because I had had my son and we decided that I’d do the typing for him. Gradually I was taking it all in, and he came home one day and said, ‘I’ll do that tap washer’ and I said, ‘No, I’ve already done it!’ The following September I went to Nescot College in Surrey and did my training in 1997. I did NVQ Level 2 in a year because I had most of the background knowledge, having typed it all. HIP: Did you encounter any difficulties from being a woman in the industry? EA: Because we are in a multi-racial society, you get a lot of customers that won’t use a woman because they don’t believe it’s a woman’s job, no matter how much you tell them you can do the job and how much they think you can do the job. I’ve had a few people over time who have not believed what they are hearing, hung the phone up, that sort of thing. As soon as I said I was a plumber, one chap hung up once! Fifteen minutes later he phoned back and said, ‘I’m so sorry, I don’t know what to say to you. Rather than embarrass both me and you I thought I’d think about what I wanted to say and come back.’ But not so much recently, most people are quite happy - quite surprised - but happy they are speaking to someone that answers the phone to be honest! HIP: Why is plumbing a good industry to work in? EA: It is a worthwhile job, a worthwhile trade. There’s a need for plumbers, there’s a need for skilled people and who says a woman can’t be that skilled person? I don’t think it’s down to male or female, I think it’s just in general; people don’t want to do a trade because it’s quite hard work but it’s very satisfying, very interesting. At the end of the day you’ve done something and it works and you’ve helped someone out of a situation. Teenagers are not all academic, they don’t all need to go to uni. At the end of the day, 50,000 brain surgeons aren’t going to empty bins or sort plumbing out when you have a problem! You can visit her website at www.cheesmansplumbers.com.

HATTIE HASAN Hattie Hasan quit her job as a primary school teacher to become a plumber. After qualifying at the age of 27, she started her own business and in 2006, she embarked on the mammoth task of creating a network of women plumbers called Stopcocks.

Female trainees wishing to know more about how they can become a Stopcocks Plumber can call 0800 8620010 or visit stopcocks.uk

HIP Magazine: Why is plumbing a good industry to work in? Hattie Hasan: The job is fantastic. Being able to channel and control water - it’s the stuff of life. In my early days, after one of the first central heating systems I’d fitted, I came home and there was a message on my answering machine thanking me. It’s things like that that make plumbing so brilliant. HIP: How did Stopcocks come about? HH: In 2006 I joined an entrepreneur network with about 250 entrepreneurs and some people were given an opportunity to talk about their business. They picked mine and I said I was going to build an army of women plumbers to make a difference. It was incredible; the room fell silent and people started applauding, thinking this was a brilliant thing. The first thing I had to do was find others. I spent an afternoon in the library looking in the Yellow Pages, it was really labour intensive. That’s how I started the first network. I created a newsletter called Stopcocks Monthly. I would write stories of different women plumbers and sometimes interview them, and later on when technology was easier I’d do videos. I started to build a community of women who were already plumbers. HIP: How did the Women Installers Together Conference come about? HH: The idea dropped into my head: let’s do a celebration of all the women in the industry. Judging by the number of women contacting me who wanted to be plumbers, I knew there must be plenty of women who would want to attend. On the morning of the first event we got a call saying there’s a queue waiting to get in! It was a sigh of relief. The second event [this year] was much better organised, we were much more confident about how to run a good event. My ambition is for it to go onto the national plumbing calendar. HIP: What advice would you give to people looking to get into the industry? HH: It will be one of the best decisions you ever make. I gave up teaching to do this, I could have been sitting now retired in a holiday home, but I decided not to go that way and I’ve never once regretted that decision. Just be the best you can, don’t give up. Have your goal in mind.

ALICE WOOLLEY Alice has been working for Vaillant and Glow-worm for almost 10 years and within that time she has progressed to Marketing Director, creating impressive campaigns for both brands whilst being a prominent and popular figure in the Twitter plumbing community.

HIP Magazine: How long have you worked at Vaillant? Alice Woolley: In December it will be 10 years. I started as the Marketing Communications Manager for Vaillant but I’ve not stayed in marketing throughout my career. I was the key account manager for our merchant customers, then I ran the specification business (social housing) side, which was a massive change but a huge opportunity because I learnt so much about the market. Then in February 2017 I started as Marketing Director for the group. Since then we’ve developed Vaillant’s largest UK TV advertising campaign, increased installer communications through a new Vaillant magazine, developed an online consumer campaign for Glow-worm and so much more. It’s a fabulous company and a fantastic place to work. The last 10 years has flown by. HIP: How do you find the plumbing industry? AW: I really like this industry and how social media is shaping it into providing support, guidance, technical advice and best practice. I really love what Stopcocks are doing to support females and we at Vaillant are proud to support them, but equally it’s important that we support everybody. It doesn’t matter if you’re male or female in this industry, everyone needs support, whether it’s personal or professional. At Vaillant we are proud to support our loyal installers with support, training, marketing and great service. I would encourage anyone to engage with the community, utilise manufacturer resources and get networking on social media with other professionals from the industry. HIP: What is your favourite part of your job? AW: When we launch a campaign that’s well received by our customers. A huge part of what we do is communicating with installers, for example our TV campaign which kicked off a long term strategy of investment in our brand and our loyal installers in December 2017 – when you hear that our efforts to support installers have been well received it’s 100% the most gratifying thing, we got such positive feedback on the campaign. The advert was quite different and a launch slot in the middle of Coronation Street is one of the most expensive advertising spots you can get. The campaign starts again in September, this year we will invest over £2.5m in consumer advertising to support installers. HIP: What do you consider to be your greatest professional achievement so far? AW: Probably my biggest achievement was the TV advert, and the communication with installers as the campaign was done to support them. The reception that we got from installers was brilliant when we started the campaign because we did it to support their businesses, and hopefully that feedback will continue as we build on the campaign.

SMALL CIRCULATORS ARE ON THE UP

There are still many millions of old, uncontrolled small circulators operating in heating systems across the UK. Life cycle costs offer a compelling argument for replacing a small circulating pump.

The additional costs that inevitably follow the development of exciting new technology – in this case the vastly improved electronics and the arrival of electronically commutated motors (ECMs) for small circulating pumps - were justified by the lower life cycle costs of the new high-efficiency, more expensive pumps and the huge savings possible over a ten or fifteenyear operational life time.

precise setting of 0.1m. In addition, energy consumption can be monitored continuously on the LED display.” Together with the new functions, the compactness of WiloYonos PICO has been dramatically improved to make it easy to install. Front access to motor screws, and the Wilo connector position, contribute to the adaptability of the pump in any installation. Importantly, new ease of use functions make maintenance far easier for the installer. Manual restart is a response to a specific request from the market, as is the new constant speed mode.

> NEW GENERATION Wilo now offers the new generation of the Wilo-Yonos PICO series small circulators to the UK market. A range of new features has been added to this popular circulator primarily for residential homes and properties, for heating systems and air conditioning equipment. With this new version, Wilo has succeeded in not only upgrading one of the most established products in the market, but also to an extent, it has been able to reinvent it thanks to new functionality and ease of use. Wilo UK’s Training and Technical Manager Gary Wheatley, said: “Energy performance plays a major role of course, and many successful existing features have been kept. As in the previous version, the outstanding Wilo ECM technology performance is combined with a 24

INTEGRATED PIPING SYSTEM IS THE IDEAL SOLUTION Pegler Yorkshire’s highly efficient pipework system has delivered infinite benefits to endless modern construction projects across the UK, including a recent project by Scottish company Arc-Tech. The £2.8m contract to construct the Hawkshead Centre was carried out on behalf of the Veterans’ Charities and the Royal Blind Association. The Day Centre has a striking roof design to replicate the wings of a Hawk jet, a subtle nod towards its military connections, whilst the 55-bed care home is a modern building with a sensory garden at its centre. > EFFICIENCY AND CONTROL Eleanor Johnson, Fittings Market Manager for Pegler Yorkshire, said: “Our integrated piping system fulfils the demanding briefs set by today’s architects and specifiers, giving installers confidence in the fitting and commissioning process. The heat free, push and press fit technology offers compatible pipes, fittings and valves and is an ideal solution in a variety of projects and continues to grow in popularity across all sectors.”

the Hawkshead Centre. The contract was carried out in a tough 40-week period on time - and on budget - and this was attributed to the products and the support received from Pegler Yorkshire. The VSH Tectite push-fit system by Pegler Yorkshire was chosen as the preferred solution for this particular project for its credentials and ability to be easily connected. Its heat-free technology ensured a clean and speedy installation of the system whilst the complementary valves provided the completed services with greater efficiency and control.

A shining example of this was when Arc-Tech (Scotland) Ltd were commissioned to be the main M & E contractor at

> CLEAN INSTALLATION The Tectite system, combined with the entire integrated piping system, ensured a clean installation as the product negates the need for any solder or flux. No hot works permit is required due to its heat-free nature. Full training from the Pegler Yorkshire team was also given to all installers to ensure the products were installed correctly and to make sure that the efficiencies of time and labour were realised. www.pegleryorkshire.co.uk.

STREAMLINE PUSH-FIT PLUMBING FROM POLYPIPE Introducing PolyMax, the white push-fit plastic plumbing fitting from Polypipe. > STEP 1: CUTTING THE PIPE

> STEP 2: USE OF PIPE STIFFENER

POLYBUTYLENE Using a Polypipe pipe cutter, cut the pipe squarely using the “K” marks on the pipe as a guide. These marks indicate when the pipe has been inserted into the fitting correctly. COPPER Wherever possible, use a rotational pipe cutter when cutting copper pipe. Ensure that all cut ends have a rounded lead in, with burrs removed. Never use a hacksaw. You will need to mark the insertion depth on the pipe as below. Pipe Diameter (mm)

10

15

22

28

Insertion Depth (mm)

22

35

42

44

Insert a pipe stiffener into the pipe (not required with copper pipe). Polypipe offer three types of stiffeners for use with PolyMax fittings: metal, plastic and for extra security - a sealed stiffener (15mm and 22mm only). When using a sealed stiffener, the stiffener will be retained in the fitting when demounted.

> STEP 3: VISUALLY CHECK FITTING Visually check that all components are present, undamaged and free from contamination. All Polypipe fittings are supplied with pre-lubricated EPDM ‘O’ rings. If any further lubrication is required, only Polypipe silicone lubricant should be used. Substances such as solder flux must not be used.

> DEMOUNTING POLYMAX

> STEP 4: INSERT PIPE INTO FITTING

> STEP 5: CHECK JOINT SECURITY

Insert pipe into the fitting, ensuring it is inserted to the full socket depth denoted by the next “K” mark on the pipe.

A quick tug on the pipe will confirm that the pipe is inserted past the grab ring and that a grab ring was present in the fitting. It does not however ensure that the pipe is fully inserted as this can only be confirmed by using the depth insertion mark.

PolyMax fittings are fully demountable and re-usable. To demount a PolyMax fitting, use the raised edge of the demounting tool (FITAID), depress the collet squarely towards the fitting and pull the pipe out of the fitting. Care should be taken that the collet is pushed all the way back to the fitting squarely to avoid scratching or scoring the pipe when it is pulled from the fitting.

THE KEY TO UFH As demand for underfloor heating rises, upcoming installers must realise the importance of high quality CAD drawings, says Toby Howard-Willis.

Since its inception, use of Computer Aided Design (CAD for short) has grown exponentially.

This holds up jobs and delays the installer, thus impacting profitability.

However, even though CAD drawings are now widely used to install underfloor heating (UFH), many installers do still take quality drawings for granted.

To re-draw every time a change is encountered also has a serious knock-on effect to an installer’s workload.

This is a perception that must change, especially for young installers as the global UFH market is predicted to reach USD 4.23 Billion by 2023, according to a leading market research organisation. Sub-standard drawings cause a variety of issues, and here’s why CAD should be used. > EASILY ADAPTABLE As a leading supplier of UFH systems, JG Speedfit are given drawings daily. However, most of these drawings are physical drawings, rather than genuine CAD drawings. Analogue drawings cannot be easily amended in line with changing demands. If there are changes, they need to be re-drawn.

With CAD, amendments can be easily made. JG Speedfit offers a free CAD design service to installers, ensuring drawings and quotations are provided in a timely manner. > MATERIALS WASTAGE With UFH, installers must order the correct amount of material first time. Any design inaccuracies will throw this amount out and lead to wastage. For example, JG Speedfit’s overfit® boards and spreader plates require a precise square meterage to calculate the coverage of these fixing methods. Even being just 20mm out can mean you’ll need to order a new box of spreader plates. By using CAD technology, this human error element is decreased significantly. > PROTECTING REPUTATION It’s a given that plumbers trade on reputation. In a competitive market, a bad job can be significantly damaging. Poor drawings that lead to bad results can reflect lack of professionalism. However, professionally produced CAD drawings inspire confidence and convey expertise. Ultimately, a good CAD drawing is key to an UFH installation’s success or failure. Accurate drawings produced by experts will save time, labour and materials. Toby Howard-Willis is Technical Manager at JG Speedfit.

PRESS-FIT

Reducing installation time and improving efficiency for installers

Press fitting is fast becoming the installation method of choice for installers keen to adopt smarter and leaner working processes that improve productivity and profitability. Why is this? Because press-fit systems have proven to take considerably less time to install than their traditional counterparts, helping reduce the cost of jobs by approximately 27% compared with screwed steel pipework, according to a BSRIA report. Press-fit boasts a number of benefits compared to traditional screwed and soldered connections, not least its simplicity and faster installation times. The press-fit method also eliminates any unnecessary time spent on hot works and the proceeding cooling down period, giving installers a speedy turnaround on jobs. What’s more, coloured pressing indicators offer easy identification of both material and unpressed joints during installation leading to a cleaner installation process. > FREE TRAINING DAYS Despite its simplicity, press fitting remains a highly skilled process and installers should attend a training programme to get the very best out of the application. The Geberit training facility in Warwick hosts a number of free training days throughout the year focussing on best practice and innovative solutions in supply and drainage systems.

DON’T SETTLE FOR SUB-STANDARD Whether it’s newbuild properties where you’ll be fitting a new unit, a retro fit installation during an emergency callout or investigating reduced performance, you'll be coming into contact with shower accessories in every bathroom scenario.

From the word go, it’s important to understand the safety-critical nature of the showerhead, hose and the dangers of installing incompatible, poor quality or non-compliant products. As a trusted installer your customer will look to you for advice on these issues, so it’s important to feel confident that you are recommending the right thing. > COMPATIBILITY Most consumers would quite understandably presume that shower accessories are compatible with any shower. However, most spray heads

are only suitable for use with mixer showers – not electric showers. Choosing incorrectly can cause severe problems with the operation of an electric shower or lead to the delivery of extremely hot water. In a similar way, low-quality shower heads can have an adverse effect on performance. So, if you are visiting such a job where the customer is complaining about lack of performance from their shower, check out which accessories are being used. This is a good place to start as inappropriate accessories could well be the cause of the issue, especially on electric showers.

> SAFETY STANDARDS Steve Saunders, Senior Technical Manager for Triton, comments: “Compliance with quality standards is a huge issue for the bathroom industry which needs constant attention if people are to be adequately protected in their own homes. “As an apprentice in the early stages of your career, it’s important to ensure you are aware of the restrictions some accessories have so you can then help your customer by only selecting products which have been designed and tested for UK homes, with the user’s safety in mind.”

On top of this, inferior hoses can become twisted or kinked during use. This restricts water flow which can create unwanted back pressure in an electric shower, as well as a build-up of hot water being held in the shower itself. The end result with both accessory issues is that users could be exposed to dangerously hot water temperatures.

For more information on the issue, watch our latest advice video on tritonshowers.co.uk or follow @TritonShowers on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram

WAGO LAUNCHES NEW WIRING CENTRE WAGO has launched a new wiring centre based on the award winning 221 series compact lever connector. The leveroperated CAGE CLAMP® connectors provide a rapid, reliable and safe connection accepting solid, stranded and fine-stranded cables up to 4mm².

The KTECH mBox L32 is a costeffective wiring centre, with all the connections placed around the perimeter of the case, providing plenty of wiring space and easy access. Usability was a key driving factor in the design: the lever-operated connectors make it a virtually tool-free installation and they remove all the small fiddly screws associated with traditional wiring centres. This means that installation times are significantly reduced and - with only one conductor per CAGE CLAMP® - fault finding is also simplified. > CONNECTIONS Connections are made via an assortment of 2, 3 & 5-conductor 221 series compact lever connectors, giving a total of 32 connections and 34

making it ideal for a wide range of applications such as heating, lighting and mains power. The layout of the connectors satisfies the requirements of most heating schematics including the most popular ‘s’ & ‘y’ configurations. Self-adhesive labels are also provided, which can be placed inside the cover and show wiring diagrams for the most popular ‘s’ & ‘y’ plans, plus a blank version for custom wiring solutions. The wiring centre is designed for internal use only and provides protection to IP2X. Cable entry points are provided for rear cable entry via any of the two snapout panels or through the bottom of the enclosure and the incorporated cable strain reliefs, to provide extra cable restraint. > SAFETY Safety was also a key design factor with the wiring centre manufactured from self-extinguishing, 960 Glow Wire polycarbonate, and all connectors being touch proof to avoid the risk of electric shock. A unique design on the underside also aids mounting on uneven surfaces whilst the front cover has an attractive finish designed to fit seamlessly in a domestic setting.

THE MORE YOU LEARN, THE MORE YOU EARN

It’s no secret that the HVAC industry is experiencing a skills shortage, therefore the pressure is on to nurture the next generation of industry talent into becoming the engineers of tomorrow. Yet to achieve true success, learning should continue well after college. Steve Owen explains why manufacturer training is the key to achieving your career goals.

This industry is one of the best around when it comes to employment opportunities. There’s variety in the work, flexibility to be your own boss and potential to earn a very good living. Recently, Baxi surveyed a number of students about their motives for starting their course and 73% said they are interested in becoming a gas engineer due to the earning potential, whilst 52% think it would make a good long-term career. They also have their sights set on becoming business owners and employers. > TRAINING IS KEY This kind of success requires ongoing learning, including attending manufacturers’ training courses. This is because training increases productspecific knowledge and confidence which usually results in securing 36

more work. Also, the more proficient you are with products the quicker you can complete the installation and move on to the next job. Baxi makes it easy with a wide variety of free training courses at centres across the country so you’re never too far from the classroom. If you want to specialise in certain areas we offer accredited courses too, such as solar thermal and unvented hot water storage (G3). In fact, 73% of installers who have attended one of our courses gave it a 100% satisfaction rating, showing that it really is worth installers taking some time out of their day.

> TIPS AND TRICKS And if you’re looking for handy tips and tricks to help you along, we now publish bitesize videos on social media every Tuesday using the hashtag #TrainingTuesday. Each week one of our expert trainers covers a different topic, ranging from servicing and maintenance, to installation and repairs. As the saying goes ‘the more you learn, the more you earn’, so if you want to go far in your career, remember to sign up for manufacturer training once you’re qualified. Steve Owen is the national training manager at Baxi.

THE SHAPE OF TOMORROW By 2050, the world will be generating power without fossil fuels. The ways in which we use energy will change radically and become far more efficient. The house of the future won’t just provide green electricity for electrical appliances and vehicles, it will also deliver heat from renewable energy sources.

This transformation is already happening. As energy supplies become increasingly decentralised, highly efficient combined heat and power (CHP) systems based on fuel cells are coming to the fore. Because they help protect the environment, subsidies for these types of systems are at record levels. In future, CHP technology will be an important part of central power generation too. What does this mean for you? Well, if you intend to still be in the industry in a few decades, it’s likely you won’t be working on the products you’re being trained on today. > WHY FUEL CELL? Heating with a fuel cell is extremely energy efficient due to its main source of energy - hydrogen. A litre of hydrogen contains almost as much energy as three litres of petrol. Hydrogen has already proven its suitability as an energy source for fuel cells in vehicles and ships many times over and is being used more and more in residential settings. One of the stand-out power-generating heating appliances that makes use of this clean and futureproof technology is the Viessmann Vitovalor 300-P. Designed for use in detached and semi-detached homes, the Vitovalor 300-P combines heat and power generation on a very small footprint (0.65m²) and offers considerably higher electrical efficiency than other CHP solutions. This reduces the amount of heat extracted and makes it particularly suitable for new builds and renovations. At 20 kW, the Vitovalor 300-P provides enough heat for a large detached or semi-detached home, while the electrical energy generated in a day (up to 16.5 kWh) can be used to charge an electric vehicle or cover the basic needs of an average household. Users save up to 30% on their energy bills as well as being entitled to Feed-in Tarif (FIT) payments and protecting themselves against rising electricity prices. They also have the satisfaction of knowing they have a future-proofed, environmentally sustainable energy system.

HELP!

WHAT IS… OCTILLION TRAINING ACADEMY? Plumbing lecturers Lee Elgy and Farooq Essa recently set up Octillion Training Academy in Uxbridge. Driven by their belief that the educational side of the industry has suffered from a target-driven system, they want to build up an alternative that will grow on a sturdy and respectable reputation by using their extensive industry knowledge.

Lee Elgy told us what Octillion Training Academy is all about… HIP: Why did teaching in a college become less rewarding? LE: At first working in an FE college was very rewarding, then over the years I noticed a change. More and more learners were being enrolled with no real interest in the trade: I discovered that many of our learners were on a plumbing course because it was free! Unemployment figures looked better as so many more 16-19 year olds were in education.

HIP: Where do you see your business in 5 years? LE: We want to expand and open up other branches. We’re small at the moment but that was our choice because we wanted to build on reputation. We are hoping that future employers will notice that someone who has trained at OTA will be informed, trained to a high standard and competent. That’s the kind of reputation that we want to build on, our main thing is quality! Everything is about how we can make their transition from being a learner to an engineer smoother.

HIP: What made you decide to set up a private training centre? LE: Colleges received funding from the government through achievement. This meant that the focus of the teachers and trainers was on the quality of the training but the Senior Management Team (SMT) were more focused on passing learners, even if the learners showed no real interest in the subject. We couldn’t do this anymore so decided to make the change! HIP: What would you say to a newly qualified plumber who was thinking about going into teaching? LE: I think that’s brilliant but I would always recommend that you are on the tools or that you gain onsite experience before teaching. We still have the plumbing business working alongside Octillion and that way they get first-hand experience and knowledge from me. You should always keep yourself up to date with new regulations, technology, tools and new processes which will enrich the classroom experience too.

challenge - which was won by Jimmy from Plumberparts in a speedy 57 seconds.

The competition was open to colleges across the UK who were asked to nominate themselves.

The money is awarded for materials, labour and any other project costs associated with updating plumbing and heating training workshops.

It was judged on a range of criteria from level of need and strength of application, to the potential positive impact on current and future students and trainers.

In an incredibly tight contest, the winner was announced as City College Norwich, who walked away with a large cheque for £10,000.

After an introduction by Graham The Plumbers’ Merchant, they were given a tour of Worcester Bosch’s factory and a CPD training session. College lecturers were then given the chance to put their training into action, with a boiler speed service

Worcester Bosch also pro mised to support the winnin g college with technical supp ort and advice after the refresh, offering students a one-off oppo rtunity to develop their skills. All three colleges left the event with a trophy and a large pile of prizes worth around £1,000.

Ian Kenny, Marketing Director at Graham, said: “City College Norwich had a fantastic submission, really good use of social media, really great use of video evidence against the criteria that we set. “We had a huge number of entries – over 80 across the UK which we are delighted with. “We have done a lot of good work over the last two years with HIP Magazine and are delighted with the response we get and the partnership we have formed. “It’s a very big part of our business going forward, in terms of the community engagement, and it’s something we really look forward to developing over 2019 and beyond.”

and Tony Sandon, heating ge lle Co y plumbing lecturer at Cit g lin fee at Norwich, said: “It’s a gre d an 00 that we’ve won the £10,0 d an rd wa now we can push for build a new gas centre. nt – “The day has been brillia orking we’ve done a lot of netw d done with other colleges an boiler servicing. nd it “I’d definitely recomme don’t to other colleges – you know if you are going to win, so just do it!”

HELPING INSTALLERS TO COMPLY WITH LEGISLATION ErP emission targets coming into force in September mean installers must ensure the oil-fired boilers they install are compliant, explains Anna Wakefield.

As a plumbing and heating engineer, the products you install have to meet energy efficiency legislation. Throughout your career, legislation will continue to change and as such, you will see manufacturers like Grant upgrading their product offering to stay ahead of the curve. So, it is important to keep up to date with the latest changes and any potential impact on your work. Grant UK has always made it easy to do this by ensuring their customers are up to speed with industry news and their products are fully compliant.

> NEW LEGISLATION On 26th September 2018, the next phase of the EU’s Energy-related Products Directive will come into effect. This new legislation will set maximum nitrogen oxides (NOx) emission levels that space heaters will need to meet, reducing the overall NOx emissions produced from heating. For oil-fired boilers, the NOx emissions target will be a maximum of 50

120mg/kWh so all oil boilers placed on the market by the manufacturer on or after 26th September will need to be compliant. One of the overarching objectives of the new legislation is to help improve the air quality by reducing pollution. The good news is that advances with burner technology coupled with Grant’s efficient boiler designs have enabled all of our Vortex Pro and Eco boiler ranges to achieve these new targets with virtually no visible change to the existing line up.

> HITTING TARGETS Grant’s VortexBlue (Blue Flame) range had already far exceeded these lower NOx emission targets from their launch in 2016 and are steadily

H IP I AU TUMN 2 0 1 8 I ADV E R TO RI AL

increasing in popularity. To reflect our confidence in this range, comprehensive guarantees of up to 10 years are available on VortexBlue boilers through our G1 installer network and, for installers new to this scheme, it is easy to register and gain these benefits (subject to Terms and Conditions). The Grant Vortex low NOx models include utility, external, boiler house, combi and wall hung boilers, all of which incorporate this new low NOx technology. The majority of components within the burners like fuel pumps, motors and control boxes remain the same as before, thus delivering continuity and familiarity for installers and engineers. DIP PIPE AND DIFFUSER

NOT ALL CYLINDERS ARE CREATED EQUAL! Never has a truer word been spoken. Every installer knows there is a huge variation in price when it comes to hot water cylinders, but do you understand the subtle engineering changes that differentiate a top-quality cylinder from the rest? > DEDICATED DRAIN OFF CONNECTIONS On the surface, this seems like a great idea, but it’s usually not. It can significantly reduce the energy efficiency of the cylinder and good manufacturers try not to cut unnecessary holes in the insulation by minimising the number of connections. For example, Kingspan uses a cold feed with a dip pipe going to the bottom of the cylinder: this allows installers to fully drain the cylinder by syphoning the water via the cold feed.

52

We asked Andrew Ogden, Technical & Design Manager at Kingspan, to tell us the top points installers often miss when making a comparison.

> DIFFUSER OR DEFLECTOR

> MATERIALS

Many installers don’t realise these are completely different approaches to distribute the cold water at the bottom of the cylinder. The best cylinders use a diffuser, as this ensures cold water fills the cylinder in a gentle layer with minimum turbulence. A deflector simply spreads the water randomly with high turbulence, resulting in the hot water at the top of the cylinder being churned up and cooled quite dramatically. The worst cylinders don’t even use a deflector and this could result in having to oversize the cylinder to compensate for the lost hot water or having unhappy customers.

This is often overlooked, but as the market has become more competitive, some manufacturers have downgraded the specification of the steel used for their inner vessels. They do this by not using proper Duplex steel, but using a lower grade of stainless steel instead or moving to a thinner gauge that is less robust and more prone to damage from corrosion.

H IP I AU TUMN 2 0 1 8 I ADV E R TO RI AL

These are just three issues for installers to consider, but there are many more. Should you need help in choosing a quality cylinder please call Kingspan Technical Help on 0345 260 0007 or email cylinder.tech-support@kingspan.com for more advice.

VAN RACKING BY VANGUARD Our Judge Tony Kite tested the VanGuard racking in his van and this was his verdict… VanGuard were easy to contact to discuss which product would be suitable for my vehicle. You can order by phone and online and you have the option of fitting it yourself or having qualified fitters do it for you; I opted to have it fitted. They did an excellent job.

There are many different racking options: you can have either flat or sloping shelves to stop tools falling off whilst travelling. I chose to have two sloping shelves and one flat. The shelving is lightweight and robust. It helps to provide extra storage in your van and it helps to keep your van tidy. There is rubber matting in the shelves too, which stops things from sliding about.

They provided extra facilities such as tray dividers, clip holders, hose racks, spray can holders, tube carriers and mastic gun holders.

> IT MAKES IT EASIER TO: STORE THINGS AWAY STOP THINGS FALLING KEEP EVERYTHING TIDY FIND TOOLS FIND SMALL ITEMS

> OVERALL VERDICT: VanGuard provide many options to suit many different vehicles. Their racking is a good quality product that is well worth the money.
