PTS AND CPS LAUNCH ‘EASY MCS’ COURSE TO BOOST RHI UPTAKE

PEAK PERFORMANCE FROM MIRA FOR CHILDREN’S CHARITY A team of 10 employees from Mira Showers recently completed the infamous Three Peaks Challenge: conquering Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon back-to-back. Having raised over £10,000 for CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading cancer charity for children and young people, and their families, the team all completed the challenge in just over 24 hours. During the event they climbed around 10,000 feet and hiked 25 miles – all with little or no sleep between peaks. Tom Rastall, Marketing Manager commented, “It was a tough event to take on, but thankfully the training and good team spirits helped us all complete the Three Peaks together. More importantly, the fantastic support we received has raised lots of money for CLIC Sargent.”

NATIONAL COMPETITION

UK COPPER BOARD SUPPORT FOR YOUNG PLUMBERS Copper has long been the material of choice for plumbing engineers. We believe that people should be encouraged to develop skills that will equip them to develop a career in the plumbing industry.

Nick Hay

The Apprentice competition puts those skills to the test and allows all of us to demonstrate the fantastic abilities of young plumbers to the industry, and to the general public. The reliability, durability, versatility and appearance mean that copper reflects the professionalism of the installer. It’s essential that each new generation of plumbers is equipped to design and install copper to very high standards and the UK Copper Board provides technical information on new developments in the copper industry as well as on the more traditional installation techniques. As part of our commitment to education, the UK Copper Board sponsors the National Apprentice of the Year skills competition.

THE COPPER CLUB Every good plumber possesses practical skills underpinned by a vast knowledge of plumbing theory. The UK Copper Board has a wealth of information available on how to correctly design and install copper pipework systems. Our Copper Club packs can be obtained simply by completing the on-line form on our website:

www.ukcopperboard.co.uk

Installation Tips is the technical manual that covers just about everything you might want to know about copper pipework systems. Easy to follow guidance is given on many topics including jointing techniques, bending, pipe sizing for both water and gas installations, the correct choice of solders and fluxes, pressure testing and locating pipework in suspended floors. Copper the Modern Solution describes the two flame-free jointing options for copper – push-fit and press fittings. For those places where you don’t want to use a flame, in roof spaces with combustible materials for example, push-fit and press fittings both offer alternatives to soldering. Copper Pipework Compendium CD, incorporating Make the Right Start, brings together all of the educational information produced by the UK Copper Board. In addition to the many pdf’s of the literature the CD contains webcasts (narrated PowerPoint presentations) and a number of question & answer sections where students can test their knowledge. Visit www.ukcopperboard.co.uk

ADEY BACKING FOR UK APPRENTICES The UK’s No. 1 manufacturer of magnetic filters, ADEY Professional Heating Solutions, is again getting behind HIP’s National Apprentice Plumber of the Year competition. ADEY’s founder and Chief Executive, Chris Adey: “When it comes to maintenance, it’s important that installers learn to treat the heating system as a whole and not just focus on the boiler, using chemicals and magnetic filtration for maximum benefits. This is why we recommend following our four step approach to heating system maintenance.

Following the success of the 2014 event, ADEY is continuing its sponsorship of next year’s competition with the final taking place at its Gloucestershire Training and Conference Centre in May 2015. ADEY is passionate about supporting young apprentices and helping them to hone their skills early on using the best tools available, explains

10 / HIP! Magazine

“It’s a clear process that professionals can follow to get the best results for their customers. It’s crucial that we introduce the next generation of heating installers to best practice as early in their careers as possible.” “There must be a concerted effort to develop skills from a young age and this competition is the perfect opportunity to do so,” continues Chris, a former apprentice with British Gas. “It’s a great platform to improve confidence and although there is obviously pressure, it’s also

a supportive learning environment where the onus is on problem solving and asking questions.

“We’re delighted to be supporting the event again in 2015 and holding the final at our training centre. Last year’s event was a fantastic showcase of the skilled apprentices we have across the country and we’re looking forward to seeing what challenges next year’s competition will present.” Visit www.adey.co.uk

Pegler Yorkshire has created the unique Tectite Flexible Metal system, a product like no other on the market.

Mira has always enjoyed the support of the professional plumber; ...and at the same time, we recognise the importance of the professional in not only enhancing our reputation through quality installations but that of the industry as a whole. Of course, apprentices are the future of the industry – so we are delighted to support the next generation of installers and hopefully Mira installers at that. An example of Mira Showers’s commitment is its Head Start training support programme for showers, specifically designed for FE colleges. Another great resource is a dedicated ‘For the Expert’ zone on its website – mirashowers.co.uk – which, for instance, includes dozens of videos covering product installation and the company’s often patented technologies. We wish all entrants into the National Apprentice of the Year the very best of success, and look forward to working with you in the years to come.

www.mirashowers.co.uk

It uses multi-layer composite pipe (MLCP) tubing constructed using a thin layer of aluminium flanked by cross-linked polyethylene, an environmentally friendly, industrial-strength plastic. This offers the perfect balance between the integrity of metal and the flexibility of plastic - malleable enough to be shaped by hand, yet more resistant to warping than plastic piping. It can handle temperatures of more than 100°C and working pressures up to 16 bar. Designed for installation alongside the high-performance metal push-fit fittings range from Pegler Yorkshire, jointing doesn’t require any expensive tooling – and is twice as quick as the capillary method, thanks to the use of pre-lubricated seals. Available in two sizes, 15mm and 22mm, the Tectite Flexible Metal system is the perfect solution for plumbing professionals everywhere. Above is an image of copper tube being cut with an adjustable tube cutter. After which the tube needs to be filed internally with a rat tail file, to remove the burrs produced during the process of cutting the tube with the adjustable cutters.

4 Above is an image of some 15mm copper tube being marked off at 380mm in length, when bending 15mm copper tube to 90째, the copper tube will gain in length on one side of the piece of tube. The copper tube effectively stretches. The average length of the pipe gain on a 90째 bend using 15mm copper will be 20mm. So, if we need a piece of tube to be 200mm x 200mm with a 90째 bend at its centre, you would imagine we need to cut the tube at 400mm. REMEMBER the pipe gain of 20mm. We remove this from the initial measurement giving us 380mm as shown in the photograph.

When the tube is marked and cut at an overall length of 380mm we can then prepare to bend the 90째 bend. The next step is to mark off a measurement of 200mm; this is inserted to the bending machine with the 200mm measurement at the top of the machine as shown above.

MAKING A TEMPLATE FOR COPPER BENDING (PASS-OVER)

1 The mark on the tube of 200mm is then offered to a piece of copper as shown above. This is to position the tube correctly to perform the bend.

6

The first thing to consider when preparing to make your template is the measurement required. For the purpose of this example we shall use 30mm as the required measurement. As you can see a base line has been drawn, from this a vertical line is drawn with the required measurement (30mm) completing the cross.

2 The image above shows the completed 90째 bend, we then need to remove the completed bend from the machine and check the measurements meet the criteria.

7

The 30mm required measurement and centre line mark are then added to the template. The template is now complete.

3

REMEMBER we needed 200mm x 200mm with a 90째 at its centre. See image no. 7 above.

The initial bend to needed to form a pass-over bend is approximately 60째. As shown in the image above.

LEVEL 2 PLUMBING: THERMAL EXPANSION Most materials will expand when heated. This is because all substances are made up of molecules (groups of atoms) which move about more vigorously when heated. This in turn leads to the molecules moving further apart from each other – resulting in the materials taking up more volume. The amount that the material expands in length when heated, can be calculated using the following formula:

Length (m) × temperature rise (°C) × Coefficient of linear expansion This table shows the coefficient values for some of the most common materials used in the plumbing industry.

LEVEL 3 PLUMBING: 6189-33 GAS OPTION (OR EAL EQUIVALENT) / PATHWAY. A RATIONALE FOR THE REFERENCING EXERCISE During your studies on the Level 3 Diploma (Gas pathway) you will study onsite and be assessed on your practical skills and knowledge. In college you will be assessed on various gas scenarios as well as natural gas, LPG knowledge and practical skills will be assessed.

The full list of documents available to you will be offered to you by your centre. It is vitally important for the ISA knowledge checks that every student can use the reference material correctly in order to find the required information.

As with most of the units on the Diploma Gas is a combination unit, so your knowledge will be assessed by written exams called ISA’s (Independent Summative Assessment). These assessments are open book, which means you will have access to some reference material such as;

It is with this in mind that this exercise on referencing has been developed to afford every student an opportunity to practice finding information within the documents to answer the questions. This can be used within the delivery of the sessions of this Gas unit, it features the reference for the document to begin with and this can be removed for further exercises as the student progresses.

LEVEL 3 EXERCISE

LEVEL 3 PLUMBING: GAS TIGHTNESS TESTING If you are on a plumbing course at Level 3 and have selected the Gas pathway, then inevitably one of the first things you will be shown how to do is a Tightness Test. A Tightness Test will be done in college and on-site with your employer. Answer the following using a CORGI Gas Engineers Guide (7th Edition), plumbing text book or IGE/UP/1B book. The list mentioned is not an exhaustive list of reference material.

Q1. What is a Tightness Test? A tightness test is a check on all check if the installation is

and

carried out at the gas meter to .

Q2. When do we need to carry out a Tightness Test? (Discuss with peers, you may be surprised how many there are)

 Whenever a smell of  On newly

is suspected or reported pipe-work / meter

 Whenever work is carried out on a tightness (including pipe-work, appliances, meters and connections)  Before

which might affect its gas

the gas supply after work on an installation

 Prior to the fitting of a

on new or existing pipe-work or installation

 On the original

prior to connecting any extension

 On completion of any

or

 Before

, painting,

or concealing any installation pipe-work

 During

testing of installation pipe-work

 Whenever there has been an  Immediately prior to

of gas supply due to a gas supply failure the installation pipe-work

Q3. Which tools would you require to carry out a Tightness Test? a) Water pressure gauge (Manometer) - used for b) Electronic pressure gauge - used for c) Screwdriver - used for d) Leak detection fluid - used for e) Torch - used for f) Stopwatch - used for g) Socket set - used for

LEVEL 3 EXERCISE

LEVEL 3 PLUMBING: SIZING OF DISCHARGE PIPE All information regarding this exercise can be found here, in section G3. http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/buildingregulations/approveddocuments/partg/ To use the table below, firstly it must be completed fully. To do this, use your smart phone to scan the QR code or seek the hard copy of the Approved Document G. The table will also be in a number of plumbing text books.

VALVE OUTLET SIZE

MIN. SIZE OF DISCHARGE PIPE D1

MIN. SIZE OF DISCHARGE PIPE D2 FROM TUNDISH

15mm

22mm

MAX RESISTANCE ALLOWED, EXPRESSED AS A LENGTH OF STRAIGHT PIPE

RESISTANCE CREATED BY EACH ELBOW OR BEND 0.8m 1.0m 1.4m

28mm 35mm 22mm

1.0m 1.4m 1.7m

Up to 9m Up to 18m Up to 27m 35mm 42mm 54mm

G1

Up to 9m Up to 18m Up to 27m

So, how to use the table to work out the size of our D2 pipe is very simple, as all the information required is at your fingertips in the table. All you need to do is calculate how many elbows / bends are on the D2 pipe and its length. To do this we need to know the valve outlet size, an example of the full calculation is as follows; Valve size

Elbows / Bends

Overall length D2

Answer

5

7m

4m

G ½ to 22m D2

WORKING OUT OF SUM:

5 x 0.8 = 4m Subtract the resistance for 5 elbows from the permitted length of 9m – 4m = 5m (see chart column 4) This gives the maximum permitted length of D2 at 22mm at 5m which is less than the 9m allowed; therefore select the next size pipe using your completed table. Use the same method to work out your resistance and subtract this from your length allowed and if this is more than your 7m overall length then the pipe size for D2 is correct.

EXAMPLE OF HOW THIS IS DONE: REMEMBER we are now using the 28mm data from the table, but still from the G ½ valve size. 5 elbows = 1.0m per elbow Actual length of D2 = 7m Permitted length of D2 using 28mm pipe = 18m Simply subtract 5 from the 18 = 13m which is more than the 7m length of D2. Therefore, 28mm pipe should be selected.
