PLUMBER PROFILE: JAMES ANDERSON
Ever wondered what it’s like to go viral on Twitter? James Anderson made national headlines thanks to a tweet praising his work. He’s since raised thousands to provide free plumbing services to elderly and disabled people. HIP Magazine: How did you get into plumbing? James Anderson: I started plumbing around 19 years ago when I was made redundant in my previous job. HIP: What is the best thing about the plumbing industry? JA: You can meet many different people from every background and no two jobs are the same. It gives you a sense of satisfaction when you make that big impact on people and their lives. HIP: What first inspired you to set up your non-profit company DEPHER?
HIP: What’s the most rewarding thing about what you do? JA: The most rewarding thing is the smile and happiness when you leave the property, knowing that they are not just safe and warm but protected from rogue traders and scammers because they become part of our DEPHER family.
JA: I felt humbled and astonished when the tweet went viral. I did not expect this at all, I’m glad it has though because we have now helped hundreds more and inspired others to do the same. HIP: How are you encouraging plumbers to join DEPHER? JA: I hope a lot do join DEPHER. We have sent information packs to many plumbing and heating companies that have joined the DEPHER initiative to provide this service in their areas. HIP: Can young plumbers and apprentices join DEPHER? JA: My ambition is to start a DEPHER Community Programme for school leavers who can train as tradespeople while learning the principles of DEPHER. This will not only help with their career, it will also improve the respect in their community for everyone. HIP: Do you employ any apprentices?
HIP: What’s the next step for DEPHER? JA: The next step for DEPHER is to become a national player in the industry and to champion the community and the vulnerable that are left behind. Building trust with the public is massively important to us. HIP: What one piece of advice would you give to those just starting out in the industry? JA: It is the quality of your behaviour and your service that is most important to a customer. Cost does play a big part but a customer would rather have a person, not a robot, and a company that is available at any time. Trust, honesty and transparency are what people are looking for.
@depheruk
JA: I was inspired to establish DEPHER because an elderly and bedbound gent was scammed out of £170 and nearly a further £5,500 for work he did not need doing. This made me think of all the elderly and disabled people in the UK and what could happen to them.
HIP: How did you feel when the tweet praising your work went viral?
JA: We take day learners from Lancashire County Council and will be pushing for funding to enable us to create apprenticeships. Here's the invoice which went viral on Twitter

DIGITAL COLUMN BY TOM TRACEY, DIGITAL EDITOR
Social media is a great way to keep in touch with industry colleagues - share photos of your best work or get involved in fun challenges! When the lockdown first came in, we launched the #SelfIsolationInspiration challenge. Our favourite entry came from The Peaky Plumber (read his 20 Questions feature on p8) who played Monopoly with his kids using toilet paper when it was more scarce than gold - as money! Connecting with people - lecturers, classmates, colleagues through apps like Zoom is good for your mental health, too.
A recent survey of small business owners and sole traders revealed that the plumbing and heating industry is running at just 13% of its normal operations due to the coronavirus. Paired with the lockdown causing colleges to close for many weeks, the reliance on digital learning for both apprentices and full-time learners has increased massively. There are so many ways you can keep up your training and ensure that, when you get back on the tools, you aren’t rusty. Many brands have been offering free videos or training to help you swot up on your skills. Check the social media accounts of brands you work with to see what they can offer.

APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR 2020
MEET THE FINALISTS
The competition kicked off in January and the learners who competed did brilliantly. Our first-ever Scottish heat and the Final had to be postponed because of you-know-what – but we'll pick up where we left off as soon as we can!
HARRY PEGLER SGS COLLEGE SOUTH WEST WINNER
DANIEL LEWIS GOWER COLLEGE SWANSEA WALES WINNER
SAM SCOTT MIDDLESBROUGH COLLEGE NORTH EAST WINNER
Daniel said HIP Apprentice of the Year was the first competition he had entered and had found it challenging, but had taken his time and worked through it. His lecturer Michael Morris said: “I’m extremely proud. He’s worked hard for this and he got what he deserves. He’s a top man.” Daniel added that it would be “practice, practice, practice” for him ahead of the final.
Sam said: “It feels great to win – it’s been a good experience. The task is fairly hard but I managed to get it done in time.” Lecturer Scott Pearson said: “He’s done amazingly well. The work that he’s put out there, I didn’t expect anything less. We knew we had to put him forward and it was definitely the right decision. He’s got to live up to this now!”
TOM THOMAS COLEG LLANDRILLO
NORTH WEST WINNER

“It’s a great feeling,” said Harry after being announced as the South West winner. “It was a great laugh to be honest – it was great fun! There are some tricky bits and I made a mistake but that doesn’t mean you have to give up – just keep doing your best.” Lecturer Lee Wood said: “I’m really proud of Harry. He’s pulled it out the bag and done really well.”
“I feel great, I can’t believe I won it,” said Tom after being announced as the North West winner. “Everyone did brilliantly so it was hard to tell who was going to win,” he said, adding that the test was “challenging but fun!” Lecturer Chris Walling said: “I’m made up for him. He’s worked hard, he’s a great student and he deserves it.”
W
e’ll be able to crown the overall winner when we get to ADEY’s HQ in Cheltenham for the final – keep an eye on hip-magazine.co.uk for details. Until then, let’s celebrate the finalists who each came through tough regional heats and have already bagged an impressive haul of prizes. We’d also like to thank our Head Judge, Glenn Stonehouse of ADEY, and the rest of our judges – Glenn Scholfield from Pegler, Jerry Whiteley from the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering, Keith Helsby and Thomas Cook from WRAS, and Gareth Harris of Welsh Water.

“I’m overwhelmed to have won,” said Isabella. “The standard was really good here and I was surprised to win. I’m really pleased.” Head of Plumbing at West Suffolk, David Warren, said: “Isabella is a model student. She’s fantastic in the classroom. I’m so proud of her winning and so is the whole team at the college.”
“I feel good, just very surprised to have won,” said Ethan after his victory, “but definitely very happy about it. I came second here last year so to go one better is brilliant.” Ethan’s lecturer Ian Henry said: “He is a very diligent, hard-working student and always does his best at what he does.”
We'll be completing our finalist lineup with the competition's first ever trip to Scotland as soon as we possibly can. Stay tuned to our social media channels and website to find out when it'll take place, and see who wins!

SANIFLOOR & KINEDO EDEN SHOWER CUBICLE Saniflo’s Kinedo Eden shower cubicle is ideal for an uneven surface, so was the perfect choice for an installation at Uttoxeter Cricket Club in Staffordshire. We caught up with the Saniflo team to see how the install went.
While the cubicle was perfect for the space available, there was insufficient gravity drainage to take the waste water from the shower. By tapping into the soil stack in the WC via a Sanifloor 3 shower pump, a straightforward solution to discharge the water was found.

Hot and cold water pipes were fed into the ceiling and connected to the water source. Isolation valves added for quick and easy ability to stop the water flow if required.

Tray feet were adjusted to level the tray once positioned and the Sanifloor gully pipework installed on to the tray and fed though the wall.
32mm pipework was fitted in place to take the used grey water from the shower, via the pump, up the pipe for a metre or so and horizontally along to the soil stack.
The Sanifloor 3 shower pump was then connected to the discharge pipework coming from the tray.

The shower face was connected to an internal panel and the two internal glass panels then slotted into place over the grooves in the shower tray to ensure all water is directed inside when the shower is in use.
The external panels and door were then installed.
The Sanifloor 3 was plugged into an extension lead for testing and the shower turned on to ensure the automatic sensor in the gully activates the pump when water is present.
FINISHED LOOK
09 > STEP NINE After testing, the Sanifloor 3 was connected to the electrics and all finishing touches were made to the cubicle.
“In just half a day the whole solution was up and running and the first shower ready to be taken
The beauty of a cubicle is that no tanking is required (unlike enclosures and tiles) because the internal glass panels and tray work together to create a completely watertight environment. No tiling and grout is required which means installation is very quick and the shower is immediately available for use once in place. No follow up visits are required. Once you’ve completed your NVQ3, stay ahead of the game by joining an Approved Contractors’ Scheme. There are seven different schemes to choose from.
M
embership of an Approved Contractors’ Scheme can offer the following benefits: > Improves promotion and branding for your business > Provides direct links to your local water company and allows you to be exempt from notifying some types of plumbing work. This link also allows you to self-certify plumbing work and find free advice on the water industry and regulations > Ensures customer reassurance – customers are expecting more than just a recommendation to confirm the competence of a contractor > Makes you eligible for WaterSafe membership, securing a listing on WaterSafe’s online directory of approved plumbers
> CHOOSING A SCHEME
> HOW TO APPLY
Qualified plumbers with a water regulations certificate are eligible to become members of an Approved Contractors’ Scheme. Depending on your location in the UK, there is a choice of seven different schemes that you can join:
There are three basic requirements to become an approved plumber:
> In England you can join CIPHE, APHC or your local water company scheme (WIAPS, Thames Water’s TAPS, Anglian Water’s APLUS or Severn Trent’s WaterMark) > In Wales you can join CIPHE, APHC or your local water company scheme (WIAPS or Hafren Dyfrdwy’s WaterMark) > In Scotland or Northern Ireland you can join CIPHE or SNIPEF > WIAPS WIAPS is the largest of the seven UK Approved Contractors’ Schemes. WIAPS is administered by the Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) on behalf of 14 of the UK Water undertakers. WIAPS provides water industrybacked accreditation to qualified plumbers and other sector workers, including groundworkers.

WORCESTER BOSCH
TRAINING
Worcester Bosch works with colleges to help tackle the skills gap that currently exists in the plumbing and heating industry. We spoke to Ewan Sutherland, National Training Manager at Worcester Bosch, to find out exactly how they are helping students and apprentices. HIP Magazine: Can apprentices attend Worcester Bosch training courses?
HIP: What training do you offer to plumbing students studying full time at college?
Ewan Sutherland: We do offer some bespoke courses for apprentices on a caseby-case basis. It’s important to ensure our future generation of engineers are as skilled as can be, so apprentices can attend with a mentor from their business so long as the mentor is qualified.
ES: With our college link programme, we offer colleges the opportunity for site visits and training. Through this, we provide equipment, materials and an insight into life as a heating engineer. We also visit colleges to help train students. We think it’s important to learn in a variety of settings both in and outside of the classroom.
HIP: What apprenticeship opportunities are available? ES: We have a variety of apprenticeship opportunities in both engineering and non-engineering areas. These include: > Field Services > Maintenance > Research & Development > Quality > Purchasing/ Purchasing Quality > Facilities > Engineering Services (Technical) > Payroll/ HR HIP: What qualifications are on offer from your company? ES: We offer the following Regularity qualifications: > Domestic Gas Renewal > Domestic Oil Renewal & Changeover > LPG Changeover > Commercial Changeover > G3 Unvented > Water Regulations > Basic Electrics for Heating Engineers

THE PRODUCT One of Dickie Dyer’s bestsellers, the Burn Barrier comes in two sizes - Tony tested the 290 x 275mm mat (RRP £37.03), while Alexx had a look at the 290 x 200mm version (RRP £24.85).
“It's really good quality and I'm really impressed with it” > ALEXX WELLER First impressions are really good. It feels thick and tough, but still flexible. It has multiple layers to withstand high temperatures, but they do advise not to put a flame on the back as it will melt. It served its purpose, it was thin enough to put behind pipework - I balanced it on some pipe clips so it wouldn't fall over. It is insulated enough to have no impact from heat on the back of the mat or wall. It's really good quality and I'm really impressed with it. It's also good value for money coming in under £25, so it’s affordable.
Alexx's verdict
Tested the 290 x 200mm
> TONY IACOVAZZO It comes with a waterproof backing, which I think is good. When you’re soldering a pipe with water in it, this stops it getting saturated. It’s also got good sturdy seams round the edge to stop it falling apart. Other burn barriers I’ve used start to come apart and get in the way, but that won’t happen here. The only issue I’ve had is that the different layers do separate and tend to hug the pipe if it’s in a tight position. When it hugs, it encourages solder to pool and makes a bit of a mess. Overall, I’d say it’s a really good product – definitely worth going for.

CHOOSING
YOUR HAND TOOLS
Your pliers are a crucial part of your toolbag and should be chosen on quality, powerful performance and user comfort. David Barnes of KNIPEX recommends three essential tools for apprentices.
A
s an apprentice you are now learning the essential skills of your trade. It’s an exciting time and as you move from working in the classroom to working on site, the tools and equipment you choose will become even more important to you. That’s especially true of your pliers, which you will need to powerfully grip, cut and nip pipes, nuts and valves on a regular basis.
HOT TIP GETTING YOUR TOOL CHOICE RIGHT EARLY ON WILL HELP ENSURE YOU WORK COMFORTABLY AND SAFELY WITH TOOLS YOU CAN RELY ON.
> COBRA PLIERS
> PLIERS WRENCH
Pliers like the KNIPEX Cobra range are substantially lighter than comparable pipe wrenches. The Cobra has enormous gripping capacity and is available in lengths from 125mm to 560mm. The KNIPEX Cobra pliers are self-locking and will not slip on the pipe, nut or joint being worked on, meaning there is no time-consuming trial and error to find the correct setup. All versions of the Cobra can be directly adjusted on the piece you are working on – simply position the upper jaw on the item, push the button and slide the lower jaw closed. The catching mechanism of the hinge bolt prevents unintentional shifting.
This KNIPEX Pliers Wrench is another tool to look out for. It’s a popular range, and has been recently launched in a slimmer 180mm length. It has narrow gripping jaws which are good for getting into confined spaces, for hard-to-reach tightening jobs. The jaws are very smooth, which means you can work directly on chrome without leaving any marks. A major feature on the pliers is the gripping mechanism, you just push the button and it grips nicely without slipping. It’s a great all rounder for plumbing and heating work.
“Just like the snake they’re named after, the Cobra pliers have enormous gripping capacity” 22

> SIDE CUTTERS KNIPEX also has four types of diagonal cutters, and the range includes the classic model, the robust high leverage version, the X-Cut – a real all-rounder, and the Twinforce, for the toughest cutting requirements. It’s a broad range that guarantees the ideal solution for tradespeople. The Classic Model, for instance, is forged from high-quality material and offers a long service life. It has precision cutting edges for soft and hard wire and cleanly cuts thin copper wires. For more details visit www.knipex.com

DESIGNER RADIATORS
Gone are the days when there was only one style of radiator to share heat in a home. The choice of radiators these days is huge, so it’s vital that you think carefully about which ones to select for each job.
HOT TIP LOW SURFACE TEMPERATURE RADIATORS ARE IDEAL FOR CARE HOMES, SCHOOLS & NURSERIES
N
owadays the bestselling radiators are the standard steel panel radiators although they are far better looking and better quality than they were 20 years ago. But there are a wide range of decorative and designer radiators available now as well. Vertical radiators are very much in vogue and there are a number of special application radiators available, including low surface temperature radiators where the casings never heat up beyond a safe 43ºC – ideal for nursing and care homes and sheltered housing developments, as well as schools and nurseries. There are extra protection versions of radiators to withstand constant or high levels of damp and condensation – in wet rooms and changing rooms for example. And there are extra robust, heavy duty radiators designed to withstand knocks and poor treatment – originally designed for sorting offices and industrial environments but now popular in a wider range of end uses including schools!
> SPECIALIST RADIATORS Specialist bathroom and kitchen towel rails and radiators are hugely popular and range from simple towel rails to the most extravagant designs. Chrome plated ladder rails are still available but have reduced in popularity as the choice of alternatives has grown. PIPE DREAMS
More and more homes – especially new-builds – rely on plastic plumbing systems. Adam Pearson, Product Manager at Polypipe Building Products, tells us why plastic is the right choice for a self-build project.
T
he majority of modern homes rely on plastic plumbing systems, rather than legacy materials. In almost all plumbing projects, plastic pipes and fittings are instrumental to a properly functioning water system. Many leading manufacturers are committed to using plastic due to its many benefits and versatility. Plastic systems are ideal for most domestic hot and cold water plumbing and heating installations, offering exceptional durability and longterm performance. > LIGHTWEIGHT SYSTEMS
Plastic plumbing and heating pipe coils are typically light in weight compared to alternative systems, while their flexibility makes them much easier and quicker to install. As an added bonus, manufacturers like Polypipe offer pipes that are flexible enough to be plumbed straight, in longer runs, without needing to wrangle with a pipe that attempts to return to its original coil shape during installation.
To claim your free sample of PolyMax register at www.polypipe.com/maxsample
The pipe’s natural flexibility means it can be bent easily to avoid obstacles and fit even the most awkward of positions, and is especially useful for a new bathroom fit-out or extension. There is a growing range of fittings available from the major manufacturers in the sector, ensuring a solution to any challenge can be found on the shelves of respected plumbers and builders’ merchants. > POLYMAX PUSH-FIT One of these fittings is the Polypipe PolyMax, a push-fit fitting offering maximum reliability and minimum fuss. The fittings are locked into place with a collet locking clip incorporating stainless steel teeth as part of a leak-proof, reliable system, but can be released using a specially designed release tool if the system needs to be changed.
By using advanced plastic plumbing systems that are designed for ease of use, whatever the skill of the installer, the quality of the final system does not need to be compromised.
This makes it an ideal system for plumbing apprentices and more experienced hands alike, especially in the tight spaces that are common with bathroom projects. There has also been great investment and progress made in plumbing system components with a simple ‘fit and forget’ ethos central to many advances in the marketplace. Polypipe also offer a variety of domestic waste traps and soil ranges to enable simple fitting and compatibility with plastic systems.

COMBINING RENEWABLES
Installing renewable heating solutions will be increasingly common in the years ahead – something you’ll be doing more and more of once you’ve qualified. Paul Wakefield, Managing Director of Grant UK, tells us how combining technologies can create an efficient heating system. > HEAT PUMPS
I
nstalling renewable heating systems will be a more common activity once you've left college, with strict Government carbon reduction targets and a focus on energy efficiency in forthcoming changes to Part L of the Building Regulations.
Heat pumps are a practical and efficient way to heat homes. Grant’s Aerona³ R32 range consists of four models – 6kW, 10kW, 13kW and 17kW – all of which utilise the more environmentally friendly R32 refrigerant.
Renewables are proven technologies and providing heating into a home does not have to be – and in the future may not be – via a traditional gas or oil-fired boiler. Instead, combining a renewable heating solution with, for instance, underfloor heating is a practical way to provide efficient, comfortable heating to your customers.
The Aerona³ R32 heat pump is a single phase, DC inverter driven ASHP incorporating in-built weather compensation and a base tray heating element to prevent ice formation. Monoblock in design, it has a simple S-plan configuration which makes for a straightforward electrical set up, helping to reduce the installation time.
This not only makes for a cleaner heat pump but also allows the units to achieve exceptional Seasonal Coefficient of Performances (SCOPs) with the 10kW model, for example, achieving a SCOP of 5.41 at 35°C. Each Aerona³ R32 heat pump is able to deliver sustainable, reliable home heating by cleverly combining high performances with a greener refrigerant.
> COMBINING HEAT PUMPS AND UFH Underfloor heating provides a satisfying heat throughout the room, leaves walls free for furniture and can add value to a property. It is also easy to install. Grant’s Uflex and Uflex MINI underfloor heating systems work incredibly well alongside the new Aerona³

R32 air source heat pump range, helping to further improve the overall efficiency of the complete heating system. Both of Grant’s underfloor heating systems are straightforward to work with and are supplied as packs specifically suited to meet a property’s requirements. The Uflex MINI system in particular is suitable for a wide range of developments, including new builds. For more info visit www.grantuk.com

SMART
SECURITY
Homeowners are increasingly investing in the latest security measures to ensure their homes remain safe in their absence. In the third part of this series, Natalie Bird, Category Manager at Graham Plumbers’ Merchant, looks at how installing Google Nest’s indoor and outdoor security cameras can benefit customers.
A
ccording to the Home Office’s report, the average UK burglary costs a combined £3,030 in possessions, emotional trauma and lost productivity, with the Office for National Statistics publishing that 42% of those burglaries take place while no-one is home. A survey of ex-thieves conducted by Co-op Home Insurance found that smart technology is the biggest deterrent from burglary, with 89% of respondents stating they would avoid targeting smart homes.
It’s important that tradespeople understand the range of smart security products they can offer to their customers to ensure they know what’s happening in their own homes no matter where they are. > INSTALLATION Installing a smart security camera network provides peace of mind as it allows users to remotely access live feeds and receive automated activity alerts when sensors detect motion or conspicuous sounds. The Google Nest indoor and outdoor security cameras, for example, enable 24/7 live 130º views in 1080p HD video even at night-time. Through the Nest app users can receive Activity Alerts with an image of what has happened
when the network detects sound or movement. With the talk and listen function, users can also respond through their home system to interact with visitors and even pets. An additional Nest Aware subscription lets users add further security measures including creating additional Activity Zones to detect motion surrounding important areas. With the more advanced Nest Cam IQ range, Supersight allows the camera to automatically zoom in and follow a person’s movements anywhere within its view. The intuitive Nest Cam IQ also comes with person alerts included as standard without the need for a Nest Aware subscription.

PUMP CHOOSING THE RIGHT
Here are Stuart Turner’s top tips for selecting the correct pump in vented gravity fed plumbing systems.
T
ypically found in older properties, this indirect system uses mains water supply to feed a cold-water storage tank, usually located in the roof space, which in turn feeds a hot water cylinder and cold outlets. Vented systems rely on gravity to provide the pressure and flow. > POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE HEAD APPLICATION?
A positive head exists when sufficient pressure is available under gravity to provide a flow at the outlet. A negative head exists when there is inadequate pressure or head of water under gravity to provide sufficient flow. Typically, a positive head condition exists where the flow from the outlet is more than 1 litre/min and a negative head condition exists where it is less than 1 litre/min. > CHOOSING A UNIVERSAL OR STANDARD PUMP Universal pumps are fully automatic, work under both positive and negative head conditions. Standard pumps operate under positive head conditions and require a minimum gravity flow of 1 litre/min.
> WHAT MAKES A PUMP ‘SYSTEM FRIENDLY’? In peripheral pumps, water is circulated and gains pressure around the periphery of the pump head. They are compact and considered system friendly as they tolerate hot water temperatures and air within the system to a greater extent than centrifugal pumps.

The preferred location is on the floor next to the hot water cylinder. If this isn’t possible, keep in mind:
> Positioning the pump further away from the hot water cylinder increases the risk of air locks
> PRESSURE AND SIZING Pumps for vented systems are rated in bar, which is a measure of the pressure they generate, but it helps to know the height of the cold-water cistern above an outlet, as this dictates the static water pressure. For example, 1 bar pressure = 10 metres static head of water. > TWIN OR A SINGLE PUMP?
HOT TIP
> PUMP LOCATION
Twin pumps boost both hot and cold supplies equally and are most commonly installed. Single pumps are designed to boost a single water supply – hot, cold or pre-mixed, for example, pumping blended water from an individual shower valve to the shower outlet.

> Positioning the pump in a loft increases the risk of frost damage > Ensuring it is accessible for servicing > Avoiding noise sensitive areas such as in or over bedrooms > Not screwing the pump down > Ensuring all pipework is properly supported and insulated where pipework passes through stud walls, or over floor/ceiling joists > Using a pump mounting pad or concrete slab For further information visit www.stuart-turner.co.uk
