Apprentices supporting apprentices is something we will always get behind. So when Level 2 plumbing apprentice Carl Ladd got in touch with us to tell us about The Apprentice Foundation, we were keen to hear more. Carl, a mature apprentice who re-trained after a serious hand injury, said: “I want to help the people who have managed to get a course through either government funding or other means but now can’t actually use the skills they’ve learnt as they progress.” Whether it’s helping others to source tools, PPE and other equipment, or to help full-time learners find apprenticeships, Carl wants to help those training in a variety of different trades to have the best chance possible of succeeding.

Carl is also the star of the IGTV series, ‘The Apprentice Diaries’ which we launched with him last year. You can check out the video series on our Instagram account, and follow Carl’s journey as an apprentice.

THE SEARCH HAS BEGUN! LE ARNER OF THE YEAR

2021

WWW.HIP-MAGAZINE.CO.UK The search has begun for the 2021 HIP Learner of the Year. With a new name and a new format, we’re excited to announce the launch of the 2021 HIP Learner of the Year competition.

T

he HIP Learner of the Year 2021 competition gives the next generation of plumbers and heating engineers the chance to be recognised for their hard work and skills. This year we shook things up with a new name and format. We were confident the changes would create even more interest from talented learners across the UK, and you didn’t disappoint us. From colleges nationwide, students have been handpicked by their lecturers to take part in the competition, and show of their skills.

PLATINUM SPONSOR Fernox Global Marketing Director Francine Wickham said: “Fernox is delighted to be the Platinum sponsor for HIP Learner of the Year 2021. Fernox has a long history of supporting education and training to promote best practice, and meet regulatory and efficiency requirements within the plumbing and heating industry.

The 2020 winner was Thomas J Thomas from Coleg Llandrillo, who said that anyone thinking of entering next year should ‘100% do it’. He added: “It’s an amazing thing to put on your CV – if I ever need to look for work in future, I can say I’ve done it and it’ll give me a step up. It definitely increases your technical skills and gives you a focus on being accurate to the point of complete precision. You have to be confident in what you do and not secondguess yourself.”

“The final was definitely a step up from the regional competition. Overall, it’s been brilliant!”

“In today’s challenging times, it is even more vital that this work continues so that the next generation of heating professionals are given the opportunity to develop their skills, be recognised for their achievements and be encouraged to pursue their chosen careers” The HIP Learner of the Year would not be possible without our amazing sponsors, all truly dedicated to supporting and nurturing the next generation of plumbing talent. A massive shout out to: Fernox, Worcester Bosch, DeWalt, Checkatrade, Kingspan, Graham The Plumbers’ Merchant, Triton, Wilo, WaterSafe, Pegler, Talon, Wednesbury Copper Tube, Snickers, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and the CIPHE. A MASSIVE SHOUT OUT TO OUR SPONSORS

Official Tool Sponsor

đ&#x;‘? Official Van Sponsor

WHICH VAN IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

It is more important than ever to stand out from the crowd and offer your customers something that others cannot. A key differentiator can be your choice of vehicle – not just for the professional image that it presents when you arrive, but also ensuring it is reliable so that you can turn up on time, every time.

> AFTERSALES SUPPORT

I

t may sound obvious but when choosing a van, you’ll need to think about what and who you need to carry, what your longest loads are and how much they weigh. > CHOOSING THE RIGHT VAN

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles offers a diverse model range – from the compact Caddy, through to the best-selling Transporter to spacious Crafter panel vans. The vehicles are as dependable as ever, but are now more versatile, comfortable, and safer. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles also offers a range of conversions plus racking and shelving options so you can store materials, equipment and tools safely and efficiently.

10

H IP I WI NTER 2 0 2 1 I V W

“Don’t separate buying your van from running it” > FUNDING YOUR VAN With the right vehicle chosen, the next question is financing. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Financial Services offers a comprehensive range of options. A finance expert is available at every Van Centre to guide you through the process, which is ideal when starting out on your own.

Don’t separate buying your van from running it. Taking out a service and maintenance contract when you purchase your van can be cost-effective, especially when rolled into a monthly payment, and means you don’t have to worry about regular servicing costs. Every Volkswagen van comes backed by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ ‘Working With You’ promise. This provides businesses with aftersales support including extended opening hours, Mobile Servicing support and expertly-trained Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles technicians. All this is aimed at keeping your vehicle on the road, minimising downtime and allowing you to focus on your day job. For more information visit www.volkswagen-vans.co.uk

In this exciting new feature, The Apprentice Voice, we give you the chance to get your questions answered by industry experts. In this issue, we took questions from two learners, Carl (@the_apprentice_ plumber) and Alexx (@xgasgirlx).

@XGASGIRLX

@THE_APPRENTICE_PLUMBER

Why should boiler installers push big manufacturer warranties when it takes work away from us in the long run?

I’m concerned about the lack of industry backing for mature students entering the trade with family to support.

“Being able to offer a longer warranty gives customers peace of mind in the product and has a big influence on which boiler they choose. It can also boost their confidence in you as the installer. With boiler warranties now surpassing 10 years in many cases, this does not come without stipulations, the main one being for an annual service to be carried out each year. This offers an opportunity at the point of install to set-up a fixed price servicing plan with your customer, or at the very least to arrange follow up contact for that work to be carried out.”

“Making a career change is always a big step; making it into a field that requires significant retraining is even bigger. This means factoring in how to fund lifestyles and families whilst also funding training if you do not have an apprenticeship. However, the government is encouraging people to retrain and so it is worth remembering that Apprenticeships are not just for school leavers and young people. There is no upper age limit and if you’re over 16, living in England and not in full-time education, then you’re eligible to become an apprentice.”

Catherine Lawrence, Marketing Manager at Alpha Heating Innovation

Tim Sainty, Membership Director at CIPHE

WHAT’S IN YOUR TOOL BAG? THE BLONDE PLUMBER By the time she was just 15 years-old, Carly Steele, aka ‘The Blonde Plumber’ (which is also the name of her business), had already learnt how to bend copper tube and solder a joint! She says, ‘The plumbing industry has always been a big part of my life. My father has been working in the industry since he was 16 years-old and I decided to follow in his footsteps starting my apprenticeship at 16 too, hot from school.” After Carly completed her 4-year apprenticeship, she not only left college with her NVQ Levels 2 and 3 in Plumbing and Heating, but also completed all of her gas qualifications. Now at 32 yearsold, she mostly works as a heating engineer and thoroughly enjoys the work.

“16 years on and I’m still loving my career. I wouldn't change it for the world!”

QUICK WATER TREATMENT GUIDE Here, Richard Crisp, Head of Chemistry at Fernox, explains why using high quality chemical water treatment in combination with a system filter is so important. > WHAT THE REGULATIONS SAY To keep central heating systems working at their best, BS 7593:2019 recommends using chemical water treatment and in-line system filters together to clean, protect, guard, and maintain system efficiency. The Fernox product range makes compliance with the latest industry standards quick and easy. > HOW MUCH CHEMICAL? Dosing with a high-quality chemical water treatment like Fernox Protector F1 into a clean system will protect it against corrosion and limescale formation. For ease, every 500ml bottle or 400ml Express canister treats 130 litres, up to 16 radiators, or 250 sqm of underfloor heating.

“The Fernox product range makes compliance with the latest industry standards easy” > WHICH SYSTEM FILTER SHOULD YOU USE? To prevent any debris, sludge or limescale from causing lasting damage, BS 7593:2019 recommends installing an in-line system filter. For ease, opt for a sealed filter such as the TF1 Sigma Filter and TF1 Omega Filter - their sealed design makes removing debris mess-free, easier and quicker. Choosing products that are quick and easy to use will minimise time on site – and enable you to fit in more jobs across the week. It’s also important to choose high-quality products that you know will deliver top results, to boost customer satisfaction and increase your chance of being called back to complete regular work like the annual boiler service.

GROWING ONLINE IN 2021

The importance of maintaining a strong online presence is now greater than ever for tradespeople, to attract new work. That is why at Graham Plumbers’ Merchant, we want to make sure you are getting the most from your own online offering, by providing these three top tips. > CLIENT TESTIMONIALS

01

Most people will read online reviews during their decision-making process. As such, it is important that you are taking the time to ask customers for reviews and clearly documenting them across your online platforms. Online reviews create social proof – evidence that you are active and engaging with customers, helping to increase consumer confidence and secure new work.

03

> STREAMLINE ACTIVITY ONLINE

02

Online tools can be a great way to alleviate some of the tiresome day-to-day paperwork that comes with running a business. With our Graham App, which is available for download from the App Store, installers can keep a digital record of all jobs and invoicing, in line with the government’s Making Tax Digital initiative. The handy solution also allows users to easily browse our product catalogue from which they can add individual items and product details directly to a quote, purchase order or invoice.

20

> PRICING SCHEMES PAY OFF

H IP I WI NTER 2 0 2 1 I G R AH AM

Some installers don’t like to reference their prices online, but some customers will only hire a tradesperson if they know how much it will cost. Whether it is a pricing scheme, or a quote generator, providing the end client with an estimate for your services is a great way to remove doubts from the selection process and attract more work. Visit www.grahamplumbersapp.com to log in or to download the mobile version of the Graham App.

CLEANER AIR FOR HEALTHY LIVING A common problem with many conventional waste traps is that they sometimes fail, resulting in loss of the water seal, gurgling and foul smells. As a dry-sealing valve that utilises a purpose designed membrane, HepvO offers a reliable alternative and prevents sewer gas entering the living space.

> HOW IT WORKS HepVO Sanitary Waste Valve provides a constant seal, which is maintained under all normal operating conditions. The self-sealing valve opens under the water pressure of a fixture emptying, and closes after the fixture has discharged, to form a tight seal. With this airtight seal between living spaces and drainage systems, HepVO ensures cleaner and healthier breathing air.

> VAST APPLICATIONS HepVO can be a much more effective alternative to traditional waste traps on any waste appliance. It can be used on any type of sanitary system, such as primary ventilated systems (single stack) and secondary ventilated systems, stub stacks, and where appliances connect to a gully. > VERSATILITY

For more information on specific application areas, please refer to the WRc information leaflets, available to download from www.wavin.co.uk

It’s sleek design and ability to install vertically or horizontally delivers space saving opportunities, offering both time and cost savings. Ideal for slimline pedestals and under kitchen sinks, where space is limited.

PLUMBER PROFILE:

CARL LADD

You might recognise Carl Ladd, aka the_apprentice_ plumber, from our IGTV Apprentice Diaries series, where we follow him through his plumbing journey as an apprentice. Carl retrained as a plumber after a serious hand injury and is currently studying his Level 2. He has a huge passion for helping anyone interested in starting a career in the plumbing industry.

26

H IP I WI NTER 2 0 2 1 I PLUM B E R PRO F IL E

HIP Magazine: What made you take up a career in plumbing?

HIP: What made you want to start doing the vlogs for HIP Magazine?

Carl Ladd: I always wanted to be a plumber but due to an injury with my hand I was terrified that I’d never be able to do manual work again. After rehab I realised that I’d still be able to use it, even though it’s a bit weak. I wasn’t going to let an injury stop me. I took a leap and it’s really paid off.

CL: Basically, there wasn’t much out there for students when I started. The reason behind creating the video diaries with HIP Magazine was to help other apprentices. I create videos that I know I would have found helpful when I first started. I’m really enjoying doing the videos. It’s not always that easy when you first start a trade so I wanted to be there to offer some guidance for anyone new to the trade.

HIP: What does a normal day look like for a Level 2 apprentice? CL: An average day usually involves first or second fix jobs. First fix will be drilling holes and installing pipe runs, which is often dusty and dirty. On second fix days, where the plastering has been done and the floor is finished, we’ll be fitting radiators and bathroom suites. No two weeks are the same, which makes the job really enjoyable and gives me a good allround view to the plumbing world. It’s very varied and exciting.

HIP: Tell us what your Foundation page is about? CL: I set up The Apprentice Foundation, to help support anyone starting out in the trade. I help source tools, PPE and other equipment for apprentices and help full-time learners find apprenticeships, giving them the best possible chance of succeeding.

HIP: What’s the worst thing you’ve ever seen on site?

HIP: What tools can't you live without?

CL: The way people use our drains! I had a basin swap to do. When I pulled the trap out, it splashed in my face, and it definitely wasn’t water!

CL: My Knipex Cobra 180s. They're small, but they pack a punch! And my impact driver. Can't live without them.

HIP: In addition to plumbing skills, what other skills do you think apprentices need? CL: Definitely communication, but that comes with time. The more you interact with people, the easier it will be. You’ll learn not to take what people say to heart. Another key skill you need as an apprentice is selfmotivation. You’ll often be working on your own so you need to be motivated. Finally, planning! Planning is key, always stay ahead. HIP: Are there any industryrelated influencers that you would recommend following? CL: Keith has helped me from day one (@harrisonofburwellltd) and Ian from @IRBHeating. His daily stories are always great viewing. Andy from I_love_plumbing and Carly, the_blonde_plumber. It's just real life footage within the trade that I personally love to see and I feel anyone else starting out should see too.

INTERVIEW WITH JADE

THE PLUMBER Ever wondered what it’s like to be a young mum of two boys and work your way up as a female in a male dominated industry? Jade Curtin, better known as @jade_theplumber, has recently qualified as a plumber and is now working as a gas trainee to further her career and support her children.

HIP Magazine: What made you want to get into plumbing? Jade Curtin: I did Level 1 when I was 16 and loved every minute of it, but I couldn’t find anyone to take me on as an apprentice. When my two boys came along I wanted to be able to teach them a trade, so I pushed myself to get back into it! HIP: What is your favourite job to carry out and why? JC: My favourite job is a tap change. Boring I know! Ha ha! It used to take me 3 hours and now I can do a tap change in under an hour, which gives me a great sense of achievement. HIP: What is your least favourite job to carry out and why? JC: My least favourite job is kitchen waste changes and repairs. I don’t think I will ever get used to that smell! HIP: Have you faced any challenges being a woman in a male dominated industry? JC: Yes, I have faced many challenges being a female. Sexism, stereotyping, even people doubting that I can do the job! But it makes me more determined.

HIP: On the flip side, have you noticed any advantages of being a female plumber? JC: I wouldn’t say I’ve noticed any advantages being a female plumber but I would say some elderly customers have said they feel more at ease. HIP: What advice would you give to other women thinking of starting a career in plumbing? JC: Just go for it! You won’t regret it. HIP: What has been your proudest achievement in your career so far? JC: My proudest achievement has got to be qualifying as a plumber and following my dream. It was a long road and I didn’t think I would get there. Now I’m training in gas and it’s amazing. HIP: What keeps you motivated? JC: My children, of course, keep me motivated. Also, knowing you can only go higher in this trade. The sky is the limit! HIP: What are your next steps in your career? JC: My next steps are to get Gas Safe and get a van!

@jade_theplumber

HIP: What is the best thing about the plumbing industry? JC: The best thing is that you learn something new every day! You also get to meet and greet lots of people and the feeling when a customer is super happy is one in a million! HIP: What has helped you learn and become better at plumbing jobs? JC: It’s all down to the people that have helped me and given me work. They all helped me to learn in the trade. Also, YouTube! There are some great tutorials for when you don’t understand a subject.

GET AHEAD OF THE COMPETITION! In 2019, the UK took the bold step of being amongst the first countries in the developed world to put into law our ambition to wipe out our contribution to climate change by 2050. > WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOU? Heating of homes and businesses by fossil fuels, such as natural gas or oil make around a 15% contribution to the carbon emissions of the UK. The Government has recently committed to a fast pace of change from using natural gas boilers to alternatives.

> THE THREE FRONT RUNNERS CURRENTLY ARE:

01 02

Use of hydrogen instead of natural gas as it is carbon free

District heat networks that use a single heat source for multiple properties, increasing fuel efficiency

03

Electrification of energy, installing heat pumps that draw warmth from the surrounding environment

Natural gas will be banned in new builds in 2025. This had highlighted a huge need for training to upskill the plumbing and heating industry workforce and new entrants to meet the demand. At present around 28,000 heat pumps are installed each year. The target by 2050 is that this will have increased to 600,000, making this an incredibly exciting time to be starting a career in this industry. With key partners, the CIPHE is developing the industry standard to become a ‘Low Carbon Installer’, with the requirement to hold a subsequent low carbon licence. Anyone installing heating systems will need this level of knowledge before they can install a system in the very near future. Now is a great time to get ahead of the competition.

?

DID YOU KNOW? CURRENTLY, AROUND 28,000 HEAT PUMPS ARE INSTALLED EACH YEAR. THE TARGET IS 600,000 BY 2050!

For more information about the CIPHE and membership visit: www.ciphe.org.uk or call 01708 463116 .

Martyn Bridges, Director of Technical Communication and Product Management for Worcester Bosch, gives a debrief of the future of off-grid heating > THE 10-POINT PLAN There is a lot of discussion around which heating technology and fuel types will be available in the future and which will be phased out on the road to net zero 2050. The latest announcement was the Prime Minister’s 10-point plan for a green industrial revolution, which saw mention of hydrogen gas and heat pumps among a number of investments outside of the heating sector.

“OFTEC believe that this could cut carbon emissions by over 90%”

> ELECTRIC HEAT PUMPS However, for those who live in homes not connected to the gas grid, it is a shame to see no mention of biofuels or bio-oil. Instead the intention from government seems to be replacing their heating systems with electric heat pumps.

> THE COST In a recent study the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) estimated that upgrading a home to a good enough standard for a heat pump to run effectively would come with a price tag of between £12,300 and £18,900 on average. A huge sum which many may not be able to afford.

> A BETTER ALTERNATIVE A possible solution would be to invest in changing the fuel for the existing oil boilers many of these properties have. Tests and trials have already begun around a new liquid fuel. Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil, as it is called, can be a good alternative to oil in heating – with very minor

changes needed to the current system. OFTEC believe that this could cut carbon emissions by over 90% whilst also reducing those possible high costs for off-gas homeowners! The 10-point plan from the Prime Minister is just the start however, so we are hopeful that biofuel will still find its place in the future.

POLYPIPE'S ™

OVERLAY PLUS The new Overlay Plus boards are taking the market by storm! The boards make laying underfloor heating systems easier for installers. Here are the key benefits and a quick installation overview. > KEY BENEFITS > The Overlay™ Plus boards are eight times lighter than the industry standard gypsumbased boards, weighing just 1.2kg compared to the standard 10kg

HOW TO INSTALL THE SYSTEM > STEP ONE

01

Ensure the substrate is level and free from any deflection, as it is essential that the panels are fixed flat and exhibit no movement once in place. Screws and rebated washers can be used to ensure stability.

> They are larger in area and, thanks to a unique design, the panels have been shown to increase system performance by 10% > The boards can be used on new-builds, refurbishments or extensions > The boards are robust and leave a reliable finish > Power tools are not needed during installation – a Stanley knife is enough to cut the flooring to shape > Faster and tidier installation with less dust produced > The tiles can be fitted directly on top of the boards

> STEP TWO

02

In a standard installation, 12 fixings per panel should be aligned as 4 fixings down one long side of the board, about 2cm in from the edge, with another row of 4 fixings down the middle section, and 4 fixings on the second long side.

bed of flexible tile adhesive. The panels should then be firmly pressed down and any foot traffic should be avoided until the panels are suitably bonded to the substrate.

If an adhesive is chosen to fix the system to the floor, a notched trowel should be used to cover either the floor or the panel with a continuous > STEP THREE

03

Once the floor panels are set in place, the hydronic underfloor heating system can be installed into the Overlay™ Plus boards.

CORDED POWER – CORDLESS FREEDOM Work is easier without an electric cable holding you back, but are cordless tools strong enough for every task? What about the really tough jobs that need large angle grinders, saws or rotary hammers, for example? Thanks to BITURBO, described by Bosch Professional as its most innovative and powerful range of 18V battery-powered tools ever, cordless convenience now goes much further. Their revolutionary technology brings you the same power and performance as corded tools rated up to 1800W.

Feel the Extreme BITURBO tools will turbocharge your working life and give you a sensation of extreme power. They achieve that by combining two key elements: a high-performance brushless motor and the highpowered Bosch ProCORE18V Professional Battery System. These two parts have been engineered to work perfectly together and maximise each other’s performance.

Brushes in traditional DC motors wear out, need regular replacement, produce damaging friction, generate excess heat and reduce energy efficiency and power. Brushless motors are much more efficient and powerful, run longer per charge and have up to twice the lifespan. BITURBO motors boost power even further with their maximised airflow, which reduces resistance, and their highstrength neodymium magnets.

A New Dimension of Power For maximum effect, the BITURBO motor is paired with an 8Ah or 12Ah ProCORE18V battery. Designed to drive and maintain the higher currents needed for power-hungry applications, these advanced batteries feature Bosch’s COOLPACK 2.0 technology. This uses intelligent heat management to optimise efficiency, for greater power and runtime, while extending battery life by preventing damage from overheating. Meanwhile, the BITURBO motor makes full use of ProCORE18V’s potential. A tool powered by one highly compact, lightweight ProCORE18V battery can match some competitors using two batteries.

Ultimate Performance. Maximum Freedom. BITURBO 18V tools and ProCORE18V batteries are part of the 100% compatible Bosch Professional 18V Flexible Power System. Any Bosch Professional 18V tool, battery or charger in your kit can be used with any other, although BITURBO and ProCORE18V will always work best when teamed together. This system’s multiple options include the world’s fastest 18V charger – the Bosch GAL 18V-160 C Professional. Capable, for instance, of charging an 8.0Ah ProcCORE18V battery from 0 to 80% in 32 minutes, it features Bluetooth connectivity and many other advances. GKT 18V-52 GC BITURBO Plunge Saw – Outstandingly compact with superior mobility and performance

The BITURBO Range Like all Bosch Professional products, BITURBO tools are built to a quality which will appeal especially to professionals who take a pride in their work and their equipment. Along with exceptional power, they promise lightweight design for easy handling and control. Bosch connectivity modules, allowing functions such as remote adjustment and data transmission, are typical of their high specifications, and most feature onboard interactive displays. They are also equipped to protect your health, with electronic safety systems like Kickback Control.

GBH 18V-36 C BITURBO Rotary Hammer – Leader in the SDS-max segment, with outstanding compactness and power Compared to normal products, BITURBO tools aren’t cheap – but they will certainly pay you back. You will immediately start saving time and energy, particularly on the most challenging jobs, and in the long run you will spend less on replacements thanks to extended tool and battery life. Visit https://www.bosch-professional.com/gb/en/ biturbo/ to find out more.

BITURBO tools combine a high-performance brushless motor with powerful ProCORE18V batteries to maximise power output and maintain a longer battery life per charge’

WIN A RHINO PIPETUBE PRO!

The Rhino PipeTube Pro is the latest redesign of Rhino’s bestselling pipe tube accessory. It features an optional PVC lining, alongside new features such as an O-ring seal to help reduce water entering the tube, a new powder coated paint finish and an integral locking system, making the lock harder to access.

> DID YOU KNOW? Without a PVC lining in your pipe carrier, a galvanic reaction between the inner walls of the tube with the materials stored inside can occur – especially if water enters the tube. This can leave a green coloured residue that can discolour your copper pipes. LET'S TALK

MENTAL HEALTH!

In England, 1 in 8 men suffer from a form of mental health problem, yet men are significantly less likely than women to ever talk about their feelings and wellbeing. The stigma around men and mental health can lead to heartbreaking outcomes which is why it’s so important to face the issue.

01

> VALUE YOURSELF The way we treat and look at ourselves has a huge impact on how we feel. Low self esteem is all too common and often the result of comparing ourselves to others, especially on social media. While it will be difficult at the beginning, you have to start valuing yourself because in the end you are going to be with you for the rest of your life and you are pretty awesome, even if you don’t know it yourself. Learn to treat yourself with kindness and respect and avoid self-criticism. This is the first step towards a happier life and you want to be happy right?

02

> TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY Small changes such as eating nutritious meals, drinking plenty of water and exercising have a huge positive impact on your mental health. Exercise helps to decrease depression and anxiety, it improves your mood and improves your immune system. That’s not to say you have to hit the gym 6 times a week, a short walk is enough!

03

> PROTECT YOUR MIND Surround yourself with people who uplift you and make you happy and avoid negativity. It’s an interesting fact that people who watch the news tend to be more depressed and worried about life than those who don’t watch the news! The news can be very good at feeding us doom and gloom, and so can social media. Be careful not to expose your mind to negativity as what you think is what you project.

46

H IP I WI NTER 2 0 2 1 I M E N TAL HE ALT H

Ten things you can do to improve your mental health, right now!

04

> HELP OTHERS Ever heard the saying “treat others how you want to be treated”? Well research has shown that when we offer kindness to others it releases serotonin in us. Serotonin is a key hormone that stabilises our mood, feelings of well-being, and happiness. So go out and do some random acts of kindness, it’ll pay off.

05

> PROGRAMME YOUR MIND If you struggle with negative thoughts, it’s important to understand how the mind works. Your thoughts are being fed to your subconscious mind and they can be influenced. When you were younger, they were influenced by your family, friends and the environment you grew up in. Those thoughts come back like a habit. So if you begin having more helpful, positive thoughts, they will soon feed into your subconscious mind and you will naturally have less negative thoughts and in turn begin to feel better.

06

> QUIET YOUR MIND Our minds work hard every day and just like our bodies, they need a rest! Give yourself some time away from scrolling, for a few minutes a day, put your phone away and try meditation or mindfulness. Try sitting in silence in a room on your own, with your eyes closed. Allow thoughts to come and go and listen to your breath. We are called human ‘beings’ for a reason. Not human ‘doings’! This will help you return to a more calm state.

07

> SET REALISTIC GOALS It’s good practice to make a list of goals so you have something to aim for and to look forward to achieving. Create a to-do list. This will make you feel better, as you will be taking things out of your mind and writing them down. When you check things off your to-do list, dopamine is released, the ‘feel good’ emotion. Start a to-do list today.

08

> CREATE A ROUTINE Lockdown has got a lot of us feeling down because we miss having a routine. According to a study by researchers at Tel Aviv University, repetitive routines are calming and help reduce anxiety. We can still have routines in lockdown, plan your day around making your bed, going on a walk or even watching a film. You will begin to feel more in control of your day and subsequently, your life.

09

> AVOID ALCOHOL AND DRUGS There’s no harm in having a drink here and there but relying on these substances can cause problems. Alcohol is a depressant and drugs are often followed by a ‘come down’ feeling. Instead, spend time with positive people, go for a run or read a book.

10

> ASK FOR HELP You should always feel free to ask for help. You are certainly not alone. Learn to accept help from other people who have been where you are before. Most people will be happy to help and because they’ve been in a similar situation to where you are now, they can offer you guidance and help to lead you out of those mental health struggles.

I hope you have found these suggestions helpful. If you are still struggling with mental health issues then there is always someone to talk to, like the Samaritans (available 24 hours). Call 116 123 to speak to a trained counsellor, confidentially, for free. M E N TA L H E A LT H I WI NTE R 2021 I H IP

Ryan won a bundle of prizes donated by this month’s competition sponsor, IDEAL Industries. When asked how he felt about winning, he said, “I’m proud of my work and it’s nice to have recognition for the work that I do. I look forward to using the prize on my next Vaillant install!” Ryan went on to say that he is really looking forward to completing his apprenticeship and develop his skills as a heating engineer.

Fiona is studying her Level 3 Diploma and received a plumbing tools bundle from Knipex, our competition sponsor. When she found out that she won the competition, she said, “I am so proud and happy to be this month’s winner. I will share my prizes with my boss Nick.” The photo she submitted to the award was the work she had completed for her unvented college assessment.

The award was sponsored by DeWalt who donated a combi drill to James. "The timing was perfect as my current combi drill had given up working properly. So this drill will replace my existing one and it will be a great upgrade." We asked James how it feels to have won the award for his work. "I feel proud and honoured that my work was good enough to win the competition. I'm over the moon!"

He said: “I enjoy the everyday challenges that it brings. Each day brings new challenges to overcome.”
