ather’s Day is just around the corner and the time is ripe to explore the topic further. Just what IS a father? How has the role of being a father morphed over the years? And when did we start celebrating Father’s Day, anyway? Why are fathers called “fathers”? There are many different types of fathers – or people and events we call father - founding fathers, forefathers, father time, stepfather, grandfather, father of our country and Father Christmas, to name a few.

The word father comes from before the 12th century and is extrapolated from Old English “fader,” as well as German “Fater” and Latin “Pater.” It literally means a man who has begotten a child or sired a child; God or the first person of the Trinity, and can be used as a term of respect, often indicating reverence for another man’s experiences and knowledge. Paradoxically, “my old man” is used irreverently but only in English.

CAVEMAN TO PRESENT DAY

It would be hard to dispute that over time the role of fathers, like that of mothers, has become more complicated. Gone are the days of the hunters and gatherers whose major fathering activity involved teaching their coming of age sons how to provide for the family. Now fathers ‘bring home the bacon,’ and work alongside mothers ‘frying it up in the pan,’ as the song goes. Many dads can now be seen changing diapers, feeding and bathing the kids, attending games or school functions, reading bedtime stories and providing more daily care overall.

A DAY FOR GOOD OL’ DAD

Day was supported by most of the populace, whereas Father’s Day was seen by many to be an attempt to clutter up the calendar with holidays, along with such ideas as Secretaries Day, Grandparent’s Day and Groundhog Day. It was not until 1966 that Father’s Day became a federal holiday when President Lyndon Johnson issued a presidential proclamation. It was first supported by Calvin Coolidge in 1924, but was subjected to so much ridicule that it was considered an unpopular idea and was not pursued. International Men’s Day is celebrated on November 19th in many countries as an alternative to Father’s Day.

DADS SETTING A GOOD EXAMPLE

Many child development experts believe the influence of a father on his children is most critical from the ages of six to 14. Former President George W. Bush agrees. He wrote, “By providing their sons and daughters with a positive example, fathers help give their children the necessary foundation they need to make wise decisions throughout their lives.” • Author A.A. Milne wrote the Pooh stories for his son and, as it turns out, all the world to share. • JRR Tolkein wrote long letters to his children. • Martin Luther King left a powerful legacy for his children as well as the world. • Michael Jordan, basketball player, taught his children and has been a role model for others on the value of perseverance and self-discipline. • Actor Brad Pitt has fathered several children, adopted others and has helped fight poverty.

Father’s Day was not created, as frequently thought, by Hallmark. It began in the early 1900’s when it was introduced by Sonora Smart Dodd who wanted to honor her father with an official day of celebration. William Jackson Smart was a Civil War hero and raised his children after his wife died while giving birth to their sixth child. Sonora, being the eldest of the six, helped her father raise her siblings and thought very highly of her father and his accomplishments. She felt • Fathers such as Mike Brady from the “Brady that fathers needed to be recognized as well as Bunch,” Charles Ingalls of “Little House on the Prairie” and Cliff Huxtable of “The Bill Cosby mothers. Show” were such positive role models that some The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, would say they likely skewed our perceptions

and made us wish for parents as perfect as they were. Even George Jetson of “The Jetsons” ferried his children to their various activities while trying to impress his boss with his commitment to his job. He was an early example of what we have come to expect from the modern father - a multitasker! • Then there are the not so positive role models, e.g., Homer Simpson of “The Simpsons,” whose clueless bumbling mocks the father role; and Archie Bunker of “All in the Family” who could make the audience laugh and cringe at the same time at his outrageous opinions about people and ‘family values.’

FATHER TIME

Father time is a common image used to depict the passing of time. His image is usually depicted as an older man similar to the Grim Reaper or Cronos, the Greek god of time, holding an hourglass and a scythe. A scythe is an old agricultural tool that was used to cut grasses but is sometimes depicted as a weapon as in when it is held by the Grim Reaper.

FOUNDING FATHERS

The founding fathers of the United States are considered to be the political leaders who signed the Declaration of Independence, or participated in some way in the American Revolution, or drafted the U.S. Constitution. Nonetheless, George Washington was a significant figure thought of as a founding father, as well as Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Alexander Hamilton, James Adams, John Jay and Benjamin Franklin. • Senator Warren G. Harding is credited with coining the phrase “Founding Fathers” when he spoke at the Republican National Convention in 1916. • John Hancock was the first to sign the Declaration of Independence and did it with such drama

IF NECESSITY IS THE MOTHER OF INVENTION, WHAT OR WHOM IS THE FATHER? Some say the true father of invention was Ben Franklin who invented a little thing called electricity, the Franklin stove, bifocal glasses, the odometer, a flexible urinary catheter and another famous contribution called the U.S. Constitution. In many cases, credit for fathering goes to more than one person; that is, credit for fathering a principle, field of study or an invention.

There are numerous “dad” movies out there to enjoy watching with or without dad: • “Three Men and a Baby” – a 1987 oldie but goodie with famous dads Tom Selleck, Ted Danson and Steve Guttenberg • The 2008 Indiana Jones adventure, “The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” features Indy (played by Harrison Ford) discovering he’s the father of a young man named Mutt Williams who initiates the latest adventure. Or there’s the 1989 feature “The Last Crusade” where Indiana has to search for his missing father who is searching for the missing Holy Grail. His father is played by Sean Connery. • Big Fish – Ewan McGregor plays son of Albert Finney’s character Ed Bloom who attempts to reconcile his father’s

Respondents are asked questions pulled from official driver license exams across the country. This year’s results are in, and they’re not encouraging. More than a quarter of those surveyed -- 28.1 percent -completely failed the test. Perhaps unsurprisingly, people in New York scored the worst, while drivers aged 18 to 24 were more likely to fail than those in other age groups. Drivers in Idaho and Wisconsin tied for first place. Interestingly, more men than women passed, and drivers in the South had the highest rate of failure.

During this economic downturn, there is a silver lining. The cost of material goods is lower now than it has been for years. The cost for labor has also been reduced significantly. The result for residential homeowners is the cost of remodeling is at an all-time low. If you remodel during this window of opportunity, you will realize a huge return on your investment. When our economy turns around, as it has several times before, the old adage “Buy Low, Sell High” can really apply to the value that will be added to your home.

After all, how can you possible work out with all those lean bodies looking at you? Not to mention the hefty cost of many gum memberships, especially if you get locked into a contract. What happens when you decide after a month it’s not for you? Oh…and let’s not forget the expense of fashionable workout clothes so you can “look good” while you’re sweating!

Specialized Adult and Pediatric Allergy and Asthma Care • Pick a video that’s fun! Whatever it is, enjoy it and laugh while you’re doing it. Kick boxing and Tai Bo are quite popular these days. • Change it up! Some videos have different routines on them, such as fat burning, cardio, toning, Pilates… Doing the same routine every day in and day out gets boring fast. • Don’t worry about “shadowing” the video instructor. The point here is to get your heart rate up, not to be the best “imitator” in the class. No one is watching you and you’re not getting a grade.

Before you buy a video, check the level of difficulty for your abilities. Find out if you need any exercise equipment. Make sure the instructor is certified; celebrities are not necessarily exercise gurus. Know the length of time for each workout so you can effectively manage your These are sound reasons for choosing exercise routine, without interfering to “sweat to the oldies” at home, with other responsibilities. in front of your own television, at your own pace, without having to All in all—exercise videos are what endure uncomfortable feelings in you make of them. DO OTHER NUTRIENTS AFFECT BLOOD PRESSURE?

are clouded by other effects such as age, race, sodium intake and alcohol consumption. A prudent approach is to consume the recommended dietary allowance of 800-1200 mg per day. Dairy products are excellent sources of well-absorbed calcium. Magnesium. There’s not enough evidence to support the use of magnesium supplementation to prevent high blood pressure. Nutritionists generally advise consuming the recommended dietary allowance of 280 mg for females and 350 mg for males. The highest concentrations of magnesium are found in whole seeds such as nuts, legumes and unmilled grains.

ther nutrients that have been investigated include potassium, calcium and magnesium. Potassium. Studies show that potassium supplementation may have a role in the prevention of high blood pressure. African-Americans seem to derive particular benefit from potassium supplementation, perhaps due to a deficient potassium intake. Although potassium is not likely to be as important as weight control and reducing sodium intake, nutritionists believe it’s a good idea to use potassium supplementation in combination with other strategies. The richest dietary sources of potassium are unprocessed foods, especially fruits, many vegetables and fresh meats.

In summary, weight loss, a reduction in sodium intake, daily low to moderate intensity exercise, and avoidance of excessive alcohol consumption appear to be the best approaches to the prevention of high blood pressure. A strong but less conclusive case can be made for potassium supplementation. The evidence is less convincing for supplementation with calcium or magnesium. Finally, know your blood pressure. Be proactive and have your blood pressure checked at least once every two years. For Additional Information please call: Tom or Lynne Manzer at the Diet Center (719) 488-3564

WHAT’S THAT YOU SMELL?

K

eep your glass on the table and rotate it so that the wine swirls around inside the glass and air mixes with the wine. Then bring the glass to your nose quickly. Stick your nose as far as it will go into the airspace without actually touching the wine and smell the wine. Free-associate. Is the aroma fruity, woodsy, fresh, cooked, intense or light? Your nose tires quickly, but it recovers quickly, too. Wait just a moment and try again. Listen to your friends’ comments and try to find the same things they find in the smell.

New DVD Releases for Week of June 15, 2009

M

an, is it a weird week for DVD releases. There’s mostly just schlock and kitsch, but then -- out of the blue -- we also see the release of an iconic, art-house classic. “Friday the 13th” (Extended Killer Cut) -- The indestructible Jason Voor-

hees dons the goalie mask and ax once again in this reboot of the slasher series that also cannot die. The plot is basically the same as the other 60 “Friday the 13th” movies: A bunch of clueless kids scamper around Crystal Lake campground looking for drugs and sex only to find a savage death at the hands of a psychopathic brute. “Transformers: The Complete First Season” (25th Anniversary Edition) -If you’re thinking this is just a shameless attempt to cash in on the new Transformers movie, buy yourself a cigar, pilgrim. All the episodes from the 1984 cartoon TV show are included on three discs, plus a documentary on how the show was created, some of the original Hasbro commercials and ... a

magnet. Seriously? A magnet? If you really want fanboys to buy this box set, toss in a 90-minute video of Megan Fox in a schoolgirl outfit jumping on a trampoline. The Seventh Seal (Criterion Collection) -- Ingmar Bergman’s classic story of a knight (Max Von Sydow) who returns home from the Crusades and plays a game of chess with Death, gets the Criterion treatment in this two-disc special edition. The first disc contains the remastered film (with an option to view in Swedish with English subtitles or the English-dubbed version) introduced by Bergman. There also is a commentary track by Peter Cowie, an expert on Bergman’s films. The second disc is loaded with featurettes, includ-

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Being the dependable person you are could work in your favor for a project that requires both skill and accountability. But check this out carefully. There could be a hidden downside. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A temperamental outburst about a mishandled project causes some fallout. Be sure to couple an apology with an explanation. A new opportunity beckons by week’s end.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A changing situation can create some complications. But if you apply that sensible Bovine mind to what seems to be a hopeless tangle of confusion, you’ll soon sort things out.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Maybe you’d rather do anything else than what you’re “stuck with” right now. But if you stop complaining, you might see how this could lead to something with real potential.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A “revelation” opens your eyes to what is really going on in the workplace. What you learn could make a difference in your career path. Continue to be alert for more news.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) Even a proud Leo ultimately recovers from hurt feelings. However, a damaged relationship might never heal unless you’re willing to spend more time and effort trying to work things out.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Not wanting to make waves might be the safest way to deal with a difficult situation. But no substantive changes can be made unless you share your assessments with others.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) There are lots of changes on the horizon, so be prepared to make some adjustments in your usually fine-tuned life. One change might even impact a personal decision you’ve been putting off.

VACATION Provided by Adam Grayson of EdwardJones Investments

S

ummer is almost here. And for many people, summer is synonymous with “vacation.” If you have children or grandchildren, they’re most likely on vacation from school, and if you’ve got the time and motivation, you may take a family vacation over the next few months. But there’s one part of your life that should never go on vacation — and that’s your investment portfolio. How can you keep your investments working for you in all seasons? Here are a few suggestions to consider:

www.edwardjones.com

Member SIPC

IT’S TIME TO MAKE THE WORLD

A BETTER PLACE TO DRIVE.

Don’t stop investing. If you want your investment dollars to continue working, you can’t pull them out of the “work force.” Unfortunately, many people try to do just that by jumping out of the financial markets when they’re slumping. By doing so, these investors reason, they can avoid taking heavy losses while they bide their time until the market recovers. But if you make a habit out of trying to avoid the market’s bad days, you may end up missing some of its good ones. No one can predict when a bull market will begin, so if you’re out of the market when it starts, your “vacation” from investing could prove expensive.

Don’t rely too much on “lazy” investments. Some investments, by their nature, are going to work harder to help you achieve your long-term goals. To be precise, stocks and stock-based accounts have the potential to help provide the growth you need, though of course the value of these securities can constantly fluctuate. Conversely, “lazy” securities such as certificates of deposit may produce returns that barely keep up with inflation. That’s not to say there’s no place for these types of investments in your portfolio — after all, they provide both current income and a high degree of preservation of principal — but you simply can’t rely on them to offer the long-term returns that can help you retire comfortably or attain other objectives. Don’t let your portfolio drift. If you buy a few investments here and there, without rhyme or reason, your portfolio may never work as hard for you as it should. And that’s why you need to develop a solid, cohesive, long-term investment strategy — one that accommodates your risk tolerance, time horizon and specific goals. Once you’ve established such a strategy, you can use it to determine the right investment mix for your portfolio. Over time, you may need to adjust that mix in response to changes in the financial world and your own life, but overall it should stay true to your strategy. As you go through life, you’ll find it important to take a vacation now and then, to escape from the pressures of work and to enjoy extra time with family and friends. But there’s no reason to ever give your investments a day off — so do what you can to keep them gainfully employed. ECONOMISTS SAY RECESSION WILL END THIS YEAR Colorado To Lead Recession Recovery

S

tatistics taken from: National Association for Business Economics, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, Associated Press, Andrew Gledhill of Moody’s Economy, Bill Dedman of MSNBC, Lucia Mutikani of Washington-Reuters, Chris Walsh of Colorado Springs Gazette, Fred Crowley of University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, Southern Colorado Economic Forum, The Business Conditions Index, Kurt Karl the New York-based chief U.S. Economist If you want to be in the right place when the recovery starts, that place is in Colorado. The recession didn’t start at the same time in every state, and it won’t end at the same time either. Colorado largely missed out on the housing boom and was among the last to join the recession. Thus, as conditions begin to

The forecast from Economists predict that jobs growth will return first in Colorado, starting in the last quarter of this year, because of the strong high-tech industries. The unemployment claims have turned the corner. The drop indicates that companies are cutting fewer jobs and is a sign that the nation-wide recession is bottoming out. The Colorado Springs economy bottomed out in December and slowly is recovering from the recession. There’s little chance it will reverse course and dip back into recession, the reports say, barring a severe event such as another terrorist attack. Permits for single-family homes are up. New car sales are higher. Lodging and automobile sales have jumped. Colorado Springs economy showed signs of strength in last quarter. Although signaling the worst may be over, the report cautions the recovery will remain slow. We’re still down from last year’s levels, but we’re moving in an upward direction. It’ll take time. That’s part of the recovery phase. You have to build up that strength. About 74 percent of the forecasters expect the recession, which started in December 2007, (the longest since World War II) to end in the third quarter, although the recovery is likely to be bumpy. The remaining 26% saw the turning point coming either the last quarter of this year or the first three months of 2010. Forecasters say that next year, the economy should grow by 2 percent, a slow but strong growth. Even though sales of newly built homes

were flat last month, the figures suggested that the battered U.S. real estate market is nearing a gradual comeback. Many forecasters also predict that home sales will hit bottom by the middle of this year (which is just about now), another stabilizing factor for the economy. Home sales will be increasing, although home prices may still decline for another 6 months. This is caused by the fact that 12 percent of homeowners with a mortgage are behind on their payments or in foreclosure, says the Mortgage Bankers Association. This is good for Home Buyers. With a lethargic recovery expected, forecasters predict the Fed’s won’t start boosting interest rates until the second quarter of next year, which is good for perspective Home Buyers. The modest recovery has been fueled by improving consumer confidence and low interest rates. REAL ESTATE STATISTICS: 12% of homes on the market are under contract in the Tri-Lakes area per month, as opposed to 15% this time last year. Good news for Buyers.

TRI-LAKES & GLENEAGLE WELCOMING

329 Homes currently on the Market in the Tri-Lakes area, as opposed to 394 this time last year. Good News for Sellers. If you are listing your home in the TriLakes area, it will take an average of 10.4 months to sell (depending on price range)…..unless you are willing to price it very competitively. Good news for Buyers. In all of Colorado Springs there are 5009 homes for sale, as opposed to 6175 homes this time last year. Good news for Sellers. 2191 Homes sold in Colorado Springs in the first 4 months this year, as opposed to 2584 sold in the first 4 months last year. Good news for Buyers. The number of homes sold in the Tri-Lakes area doubled from January to April this year. Good news for Sellers. omestic violence is a very serious problem. It affects us all. It is especially bad for children. Domestic violence situations can often arise in the context of a divorce, separation or child custody situation. Very serious laws have been enacted to punish and to prevent domestic violence. What is “domestic violence”? It is any act or threatened act of violence directed toward someone you are related to or have a relationship with. This covers a lot of ground and can include some seemingly insignificant acts. If you touch somebody intentionally (not accidentally) in the context of a domestic dispute, you can be subject to some serious legal consequences. Lightly pushing someone or shaking their chair are examples of behavior that can get you arrested. If you are involved in an argument and tempers are rising, and you can’t reduce the level of conflict by reasonable means, say “no” to domestic violence – leave, and don’t slam the door on the way out! Don’t put yourself at risk. The consequences of domestic violence can be devastating, even where then is absolutely no physical injury involved. If a 911 caller alleges domestic violence, someone

If you are arrested for domestic violence, the prosecutor can’t drop the charges, or plea bargain for a charge that does not include domestic violence. Unless you want to enter a plea of anything other than “not guilty”, your only recourse is to go to trial and hope that a jury will find that the prosecutor has not proved the case against you.

Once you are convicted of domestic violence, you can say “goodbye” to work that involves taking care of other human beings, such as anything related to medicine or education. Domestic violence laws apply equally to men and to women. Even if you are a woman who has been chronically subjected to physical, emotional, and psychological abuse, if you lose your temper and push back, you could be arrested and have to deal with the stigma of a domestic violence conviction for the rest of our life. So, just say ”no” – leave, avoid a conflict. It’s not only the smart thing to do, it’s the law! You may not like it. You may not understand it. You may not think it’s fair, but it’s the law!

But if your father is struggling with the high cost of prescription drugs, maybe it’s time for you to give him a few words of advice. This Father’s Day, you may be able to help your dad save an average of $3,900 a year on his prescription drug costs. Here’s how.

• Resources limited to $12,510 for an individual or $25,010 for a married couple living together. Resources include such things as bank accounts, stocks and bonds. We do not count his house or car as resources.

If your father, or any father figure you know, is covered by Medicare and has limited income and resources, he may qualify for extra help — available through Social Security — to pay part of his monthly premiums, annual deductibles and prescription co-payments. The extra help is worth an average of $3,900 per year. To figure out whether your father is eligible, Social Security needs to know his income and the value of his savings, investments and real estate (other than the home he lives in). To qualify for the extra help, he must be receiving Medicare and also have: • Income limited to $16,245 for an individual or $21, 855 for a married couple living together. Even if his annual income is higher, he still may be able to get some help with monthly premiums, annual deductibles and prescription co-payments. Some examples where income may be higher include if he or his
