The word father comes from before the 12th century and is extrapolated from Old English “fader,” as well as German “Fater” and Latin “Pater.” It literally means a man who has begotten a child or sired a child; God or the first person of the Trinity, and can be used as a term of respect, often indicating reverence for another man’s experiences and knowledge. Paradoxically, “my old man” is used irreverently but only in English.

CAVEMAN TO PRESENT DAY

It would be hard to dispute that over time the role of fathers, like that of mothers, has become more complicated. Gone are the days of the hunters and gatherers whose major fathering activity involved teaching their coming of age sons how to provide for the family. Now fathers ‘bring home the bacon,’ and work alongside mothers ‘frying it up in the pan,’ as the song goes. Many dads can now be seen changing diapers, feeding and bathing the kids, attending games or school functions, reading bedtime stories and providing more daily care overall.

A DAY FOR GOOD OL’ DAD

Day was supported by most of the populace, whereas Father’s Day was seen by many to be an attempt to clutter up the calendar with holidays, along with such ideas as Secretaries Day, Grandparent’s Day and Groundhog Day. It was not until 1966 that Father’s Day became a federal holiday when President Lyndon Johnson issued a presidential proclamation. It was first supported by Calvin Coolidge in 1924, but was subjected to so much ridicule that it was considered an unpopular idea and was not pursued. International Men’s Day is celebrated on November 19th in many countries as an alternative to Father’s Day.

DADS SETTING A GOOD EXAMPLE

Many child development experts believe the influence of a father on his children is most critical from the ages of six to 14. Former President George W. Bush agrees. He wrote, “By providing their sons and daughters with a positive example, fathers help give their children the necessary foundation they need to make wise decisions throughout their lives.” • Author A.A. Milne wrote the Pooh stories for his son and, as it turns out, all the world to share. • JRR Tolkein wrote long letters to his children. • Martin Luther King left a powerful legacy for his children as well as the world. • Michael Jordan, basketball player, taught his children and has been a role model for others on the value of perseverance and self-discipline. • Actor Brad Pitt has fathered several children, adopted others and has helped fight poverty.

Father’s Day was not created, as frequently thought, by Hallmark. It began in the early 1900’s when it was introduced by Sonora Smart Dodd who wanted to honor her father with an official day of celebration. William Jackson Smart was a Civil War hero and raised his children after his wife died while giving birth to their sixth child. Sonora, being the eldest of the six, helped her father raise her siblings and thought very highly of her father and his accomplishments. FATHER TIME

Father time is a common image used to depict the passing of time. His image is usually depicted as an older man similar to the Grim Reaper or Cronos, the Greek god of time, holding an hourglass and a scythe. A scythe is an old agricultural tool that was used to cut grasses but is sometimes depicted as a weapon as in when it is held by the Grim Reaper.

The founding fathers of the United States are considered to be the political leaders who signed the Declaration of Independence, or participated in some way in the American Revolution, or drafted the U.S. Constitution. Nonetheless, George Washington was a significant figure thought of as a founding father, as well as Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Alexander Hamilton, James Adams, John Jay and Benjamin Franklin. • Senator Warren G. his sweet littles girl is Lady. Lady was abandoned in a foreclosed home. We do believe that she is 1 1/2 years old. She has been de-clawed (front paws) and is up to date on her shots and is spayed. 1 can (19-ounce) black beans, rinsed and drained 1 1/4 cups (about 11 ounces) mild or medium-hot salsa 4 large eggs 3 ounces shredded Mexican cheese blend 3/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro or parsley leaves, for garnish Warm flour tortillas (optional) 1. In 10-inch skillet, mix black beans,

1. Peel, quarter and slice onions and potatoes 1/4 “ thick. 2. Heat oil in a 9” nonstick or cast-iron skillet. 3. Add onions and sprinkle with salt & pepper. 4. Cook over medium heat until soft. 5. Strain onions in a strainer over a bowl and return oil to pan. 6. Cook potatoes over medium heat until golden and a little crunchy. 7. Strain and return oil to the skillet. 8. Mix onions, potatoes and eggs in a bowl. 9. Reheat oil in skillet and pour 1/3 of the mixture in. 10. Cook over medium heat until the bottom is set, the top will still be runny. 11. Cover skillet with a lid and quickly invert torti-

lla and just as quickly slide it back into the pan. 12. Cook until set. Tortilla should have a little give when pressed in the center and the sides should be firm. 13. Turn tortilla out onto a platter and let it rest at least 15 minutes before serving. The Tortilla can be chilled before serving but should be brought back to room temperature. 14. Repeat 2 additional times.

The plot is basically the same as the other 60 “Friday the 13th” movies: A bunch of clueless kids scamper around Crystal Lake campground looking for drugs and sex only to ﬁnd a savage death at the hands of a psychopathic brute. “Transformers: The Complete First Season” (25th Anniversary Edition) -If you’re thinking this is just a shameless attempt to cash in on the new Transformers movie, buy yourself a cigar, pilgrim. All the episodes from the 1984 cartoon TV show are included on three discs, plus a documentary on how the show was created, some of the original Hasbro commercials and ... a

magnet. Seriously? A magnet? If you really want fanboys to buy this box set, toss in a 90-minute video of Megan Fox in a schoolgirl outfit jumping on a trampoline. Don’t stop investing. If you want your investment dollars to continue working, you can’t pull them out of the “work force.” Unfortunately, many people try to do just that by jumping out of the ﬁnancial markets when they’re slumping. By doing so, these investors reason, they can avoid taking heavy losses while they bide their time until the market recovers. But if you make a habit out of trying to avoid the market’s bad days, you may end up missing some of its good ones. No one can predict when a bull market will begin, so if you’re out of the market when it starts, your “vacation” from investing could prove expensive.

Don’t rely too much on “lazy” investments. Some investments, by their nature, are going to work harder to help you achieve your long-term goals. To be precise, stocks and stock-based accounts have the potential to help provide the growth you need, though of course the value of these securities can constantly fluctuate. Conversely, “lazy” securities such as certificates of deposit may produce returns that barely keep up with inflation. That’s not to say there’s no place for these types of investments in your portfolio — after all, they provide both current income and a high degree of preservation of principal — but you simply can’t rely on them to offer the long-term returns that can help you retire comfortably or attain other objectives. Don’t let your portfolio drift. If you buy a few investments here and there, without rhyme or reason, your portfolio may never work as hard for you as it should. And that’s why you need to develop a solid, cohesive, long-term investment strategy — one that accommodates your risk tolerance, time horizon and specific goals. Once you’ve established such a strategy, you can use it to determine the right investment mix for your portfolio. Over time, you may need to adjust that mix in response to changes in the financial world and your own life, but overall it should stay true to your strategy. As you go through life, you’ll find it important to take a vacation now and then, to escape from the pressures of work and to enjoy extra time with family and friends. But there’s no reason to ever give your investments a day off — so do what you can to keep them gainfully employed. The recession didn’t start at the same time in every state, and it won’t end at the same time either. Colorado largely missed out on the housing boom and was among the last to join the recession. Thus, as conditions begin to

The forecast from Economists predict that jobs growth will return first in Colorado, starting in the last quarter of this year, because of the strong high-tech industries. The unemployment claims have turned the corner. The drop indicates that companies are cutting fewer jobs and is a sign that the nation-wide recession is bottoming out. The Colorado Springs economy bottomed out in December and slowly is recovering from the recession. There’s little chance it will reverse course and dip back into recession, the reports say, barring a severe event such as another terrorist attack. Permits for single-family homes are up. New car sales are higher. Lodging and automobile sales have jumped. Colorado Springs economy showed signs of strength in last quarter. Although signaling the worst may be over, the report cautions the recovery will remain slow. We’re still down from last year’s levels, but we’re moving in an upward direction. It’ll take time. That’s part of the recovery phase. You have to build up that strength. About 74 percent of the forecasters expect the recession, which started in December 2007, (the longest since World War II) to end in the third quarter, although the recovery is likely to be bumpy. The remaining 26% saw the turning point coming either the last quarter of this year or the first three months of 2010. Forecasters say that next year, the economy should grow by 2 percent, a slow but strong growth. Even though sales of newly built homes

were flat last month, the figures suggested that the battered U.S. real estate market is nearing a gradual comeback. Many forecasters also predict that home sales will hit bottom by the middle of this year (which is just about now), another stabilizing factor for the economy. Home sales will be increasing, although home prices may still decline for another 6 months. This is caused by the fact that 12 percent of homeowners with a mortgage are behind on their payments or in foreclosure, says the Mortgage Bankers Association. This is good for Home Buyers. With a lethargic recovery expected, forecasters predict the Fed’s won’t start boosting interest rates until the second quarter of next year, which is good for perspective Home Buyers. The modest recovery has been fueled by improving consumer confidence and low interest rates. REAL ESTATE STATISTICS: 12% of homes on the market are under contract in the Tri-Lakes area per month, as opposed to 15% this time last year. Good news for Buyers.

omestic violence is a very serious problem. It affects us all. It is especially bad for children. Domestic violence situations can often arise in the context of a divorce, separation or child custody situation. Very serious laws have been enacted to punish and to prevent domestic violence. What is “domestic violence”? It is any act or threatened act of violence directed toward someone you are related to or have a relationship with. This covers a lot of ground and can include some seemingly insignificant acts. If you touch somebody intentionally (not accidentally) in the context of a domestic dispute, you can be subject to some serious legal consequences. Lightly pushing someone or shaking their chair are examples of behavior that can get you arrested. If you are involved in an argument and tempers are rising, and you can’t reduce the level of conflict by reasonable means, say “no” to domestic violence – leave, and don’t slam the door on the way out! Don’t put yourself at risk. The consequences of domestic violence can be devastating, even where then is absolutely no physical injury involved. If a 911 caller alleges domestic violence, someone

If you are arrested for domestic violence, the prosecutor can’t drop the charges, or plea bargain for a charge that does not include domestic violence. Unless you want to enter a plea of anything other than “not guilty”, your only recourse is to go to trial and hope that a jury will find that the prosecutor has not proved the case against you.

Once you are convicted of domestic violence, you can say “goodbye” to work that involves taking care of other human beings, such as anything related to medicine or education. Domestic violence laws apply equally to men and to women. Even if you are a woman who has been chronically subjected to physical, emotional, and psychological abuse, if you lose your temper and push back, you could be arrested and have to deal with the stigma of a domestic violence conviction for the rest of our life. So, just say ”no” – leave, avoid a conﬂict. It’s not only the smart thing to do, it’s the law! You may not like it. You may not understand it. You may not think it’s fair, but it’s the law!
