for a healthy weight, managing diabetes, reducing stress and limiting alcohol. This laundry list of risk factors may seem overwhelming, but the good news is that they interact in a positive way. In fact, the American Heart Association boils it down to just three easy steps, the ABCs of heart health:

eart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, with stroke coming in fifth, according to the American Heart Association. Both of these conditions result when blood flow is reduced or stopped altogether. But there are steps people can take to reduce the risk. Increasing age, gender and heredity cannot be changed, but other risk factors can be. A person at risk for heart disease can reduce the risk by: avoiding smoking, being physically active every day, choosing good nutrition, reducing high cholesterol, lowering high blood pressure, aiming

A -- Avoid smoking, B -- Be physically active, C -- Choose good nutrition. These steps may not seem so easy, but by making small steps in the right direction it will be possible to live healthier and feel better. Choose a small change to make in each category. For example: • As a stress break at work, try skipping a cigarette and going for a short walk instead. Even 10 minutes at a time of walking may have health benefits. • Vow to skip French fries one day per week -- make it fries-free Friday. • Go dancing with a friend to increase physical activity, which will also help to lower cholesterol and blood pressure, get diabetes under better control and move toward a healthier weight, plus you’ll be having fun while you’re at it!

• Investigate the calorie count of a favorite food and see if you can eat just one serving or find a healthier option that is just as tasty. Challenge yourself to make two to three small changes, for your own sake and for those you care about. Or invite someone you care about who is at high risk for heart disease to join you in making those changes. Take one new small step toward better health each month and the benefits will accumulate, making the better choic-

Lexicon of Life-lifting Words Dr. Ron Ross’s

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication” (Leonardo da Vinci); “Simplicity is the final achievement” (Frederic Chopin); “Simplicity is the essence of happiness” (Cedric Bledsoe); “Simplicity is the peak of civilization” (Jesse Sampter); “Simplicity is the expression of truth” (Seneca). And the metaphors go on and on.

THIS WEEK’S LIFE-LIFTING WORD:

“SIMPLICITY” by Ron Ross

“Simplicity” — sounds like a simple word, doesn’t it? But research quickly reveals “simplicity” means different things to different people. However, the core meaning is always positive, so “simplicity” is added to the Lexicon of Life-Lifting Words. To appreciate the complexity “simplicity,” consider these quotes:

of

“Simplicity is the shortest distance between two points” (Bruce Lee); “Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance” (Coco Chanel); “Simplicity is the glory of expression” (Walt Whitman);

Wow… a lot to absorb! So how does Webster define simplicity? “Simplicity is the state of being simple, uncomplicated or uncompounded; freedom from pretense or guile; directness of expression; restraint in ornamentation.” These meanings are more familiar; nevertheless, there’s something delightful and intriguing about the word “simplicity” that elicits deeper thought. According to Einstein, “The definition of genius is taking the complex and making it simple.” Unfortunately, most humans aren’t genius material; therefore, we have a real knack —perhaps even a genetic predisposition — for complicating the

simple. Does KISS (“Keep it simple, stupid”) sound familiar? Warren Buffet recognizes, “There seems to be some perverse human characteristic that likes to make easy things difficult.” Author, philosopher and naturalist, Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862), was troubled by life’s complexity, stating, “I do believe in simplicity. It is astonishing as well as sad, how many trivial affairs even the wisest thinks he must attend to in a day; how singular an affair he thinks he must omit. When the mathematician would solve a difficult problem, he first frees the equation of all incumbrances, and reduces it to its simplest terms. So simplify the problem of life, distinguish the necessary and the real. Probe the earth to see where your main roots run.” Thoreau was an eternal advocate for living a life of simplicity, which compelled him to dwell in a one-room cabin alone in the woods of Massachusetts for over two years. His book, Walden, reflects on that simple life near Walden Pond. Annually on July 12, Thoreau’s birthday, he is celebrated with National Simplicity Day — reminding us to “Sweep away the clutter of things that complicate our lives.” Billions of dollars are wasted acquiring,

storing, maintaining, and insuring stuff — and then disposing of it! Just as storage units are crammed with clutter, our calendars are jammed with unnecessary commitments and incomplete projects. Our minds reel with email, Facebook and Twitter. We’re addicted to television, texting, and gaming. Thoreau’s words seem even more relevant today: “Our life is frittered away by detail. Simplify, simplify.” But how do you begin to simplify? Remember, Thoreau said: “So simplify the problem of life, distinguish the necessary and the real.” Author Victoria Moran expands, saying, “When you’re clear about your purpose and your priorities, you can painlessly discard whatever does not support these, whether it’s clutter in your cabinets or commitments on your calendar.” Simplicity boils down to removing the excess from your life to focus on what’s most important — and if in doubt, follow this gem of advice from organizing consultant and author Marie Kondo: “Keep only those things that speak to your heart.”

I

E-MAIL

n our last few articles for Snippetz, we have been very focused on questions our customers frequently have asked. Last month, we talked about scams and frauds and how to avoid them. This month we are going to be a little less focused. I want to riff on e-mail in this article. No one singular issue, but just discuss some of the problems and issues I have seen in the past three years with e-mail. Let’s start with probably the biggest problem I see with e-mail and my customers. Of computers running bundled productivity software (office suites), Microsoft Office 365 and its previous versions are running on approximately 44% of PCs. The G-suite of apps from Google runs on approximately 55% of computers. With the MS Office suite of programs comes Microsoft Outlook. Outlook is a very powerful and complex e-mail client designed primarily for business applications. Many of my customers just don’t need this level of sophistication in an e-mail client. Windows 10 has a beautiful and very uncomplicated e-mail client built right in that is more than sufficient for most of my customers’ needs. Thunderbird is another e-mail client that we have recommended. Both clients have simple and clean interfaces that receiving and sending e-mails, even from multiple accounts, easy. Yet many customers insist on staying with MS Office for no good reason other than familiarity or “somebody told me to.” Often a friend, neighbor, or family member has set up the customer with Outlook trying to help them and has actually made it more difficult for the customer. Sometimes, even when a customer is running the G-suite of applications, they still import their Gmail into Outlook.

There is just is no good reason for this. Usually, the only people who can truly benefit from MS Office are businesses. The many features of MS Office make managing business e-mail easier and more efficient. The next random issue: multiple e-mail addresses. Many of our customers have multiple e-mail addresses. Some folks want all their e-mail from multiple addresses to arrive in one Inbox while others want separate Inboxes for each account. All of this is possible with most e-mail clients. In some cases, multiple accounts are necessary: to keep personal and business e-mails separate, for example. But in many cases, our clients will have a Gmail address, a Yahoo address, maybe an old AOL address and just don’t want to take the time and effort to consolidate or reduce the number of e-mail addresses thereby unnecessarily complicating their e-mail management. While it will take a bit of effort, consolidating e-mail accounts will simply e-mail management.

greatest version of software they put out. Author and Life Coach Tony Robbins has been quoted as saying, “Change is inevitable, Progress is optional.” While we can argue over whether a particular newer version of a piece of software is better or not, at some point, if you wish to continue to use that software, you must change with it. Companies stop supporting older versions of software. Older versions of software stop working with newer versions of software. Many of my customers say that they don’t want to change from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Last month, Microsoft completely stopped supporting Windows 7 with security and patch updates. The older Windows 7 gets, the more vulnerable it is to hackers and software bugs.

Then there is the businessman who has three or four e-mail accounts, all being imported into MS Outlook. They come to us and want us to help them synchronize their e-mails so that every e-mail gets received in every other account and their MS Outlook calendar is reflected into all their e-mail accounts…AND ON THEIR CELL PHONE. Sometimes this is akin to trying to get five different foreign language speakers to communicate with each other. Trying to make MS Office communicate with the Apple e-mail client on iPhones and Gmail on cell phones simultaneously has truly caused gray hair for my guys. If you are trying to make magic happen with your e-mail, we can certainly help, but there is no guarantee that every client will communicate with every other.

The same process is happening with MS Outlook. While many folks don’t like

the newer versions of Outlook (I don’t like them either), we need to adopt and accept them. Often, a customer will come in and be running a version of Outlook 10, 13 or even 17 years old, and then can’t understand why he or she is having problems with the program working properly or talking with other programs. While we can never force a customer to change, we always highly recommend the latest versions of software to ensure safety and security as well as compatibility with other programs. These are just some of the many issues customers have with e-mail. Managing e-mail can be complicated and exasperating. We stand ready at Simple Computer Repair to help you with your e-mail issues and get you back on the road to efficient e-mail communications.

much different than any other day…but we were soon to find out that it was NOT going to stay an ordinary day. Baldo and his puppy Tessa set out for town to have a cup of coffee. They were walking past ol' Miss Clancy’s house when all of a sudden, the old biddy poked her head through the dense hedge. “Keep that mutt away from my yard, you silly man!” she growled in his face. Baldo thought of scolding her for frightening his dog, but instead, he decided he’d turn her frown upside down.

He lived his quiet life with his little puppy Tessa and he was loved by all for his witty sense of humor. Loved by all….except ornery, ol' Miss Clancy. She didn’t like to laugh, and although she threatened revenge upon anyone who made her laugh, Baldo still made it his mission to cheer her up. It was a day, an ordinary day, one not

Baldo asked ol' Miss Clancy, “How are a dog and a marine biologist alike? One wags a tail and the other tags a whale!” Ol' Miss Clancy let out a snort…. a weird grin began creeping across her wrinkled face…then all of a sudden, a scrawny hand reached through the hedge and grabbed his little puppy, Tessa. “I’m sorry I made you laugh!” Baldo exclaimed as he scrambled through the hedge to follow her, but it was too late. In 1985, the Riverside City Council voted to declare their town the future birthplace of the character, later writing to Roddenberry and receiving his approval. In honor of its newfound claim to fame, the city began hosting an annual Trek Fest, complete with a Spockapalooza battle of the bands.

WHAT IS THE ESTATE TAX?

T

he estate tax is a tax on property that transfers to others upon your death. Estate taxes are assessed on the total value of your estate — your home, stocks, bonds, life insurance, and other assets of value — that is over the applicable exemption amount. Everything you own, whatever the form of ownership and regardless of whether the assets have been through probate, is subject to estate taxes.

reinstated the federal estate tax with a $5 million exemption (indexed for inflation after 2011) through December 31, 2012. The 2010 estate tax provisions were made permanent by the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012, although the top federal estate tax rate was raised to 40%. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, signed into law in December 2017, doubled the federal estate tax exclusion to $11.18 million in 2018 (indexed annually for inflation). The applicable exemption amount in 2020 is $11.58 million. In 2026, the exclusion is scheduled to revert to its pre-2018 level and be cut by about one-half.

Also referred to as the “death tax,” the federal estate tax was first enacted in this country with the Stamp Act of 1797 to help pay for naval rearmament. After several repeals and reinstatements, the Revenue Act of 1916 put the current estate tax into place. Despite its long history, this tax remains controversial. Estate taxes are calculated on the net value of your estate, which includes all your assets less allowable debts, expenses, and deductions (such as mortgage debt and administrative expenses for the estate). The applicable estate tax exemption is subtracted, and the resulting taxable value is multiplied by the applicable estate tax rate to determine any taxes due. The most common exception to the federal estate tax is the unlimited marital deduction. The government exempts all transfers of wealth between a husband and wife from federal estate and gift taxes, regardless of the size of the estate. (The surviving spouse must be a U.S. citizen to qualify for this exemption.) However, when the surviving spouse dies, the estate is subject to estate taxes and, unless the appropriate portability preparations have been made, only the surviving spouse’s applicable exemption can be used. The Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001 gradually increased the federal estate tax exemption until finally repealing the federal estate tax altogether for the 2010 tax year only. The 2010 Tax Relief Act

Check with your tax advisor to be sure that your estate is protected as much as possible from estate taxes upon your death. * Executors for estates of decedents who died in 2010 had the option of electing to use the 35% rate, $5 million exemption, and “stepped up” basis of inherited assets for income tax purposes or zero estate tax liability with “carry over” basis of inherited assets for income tax purposes. SNIPPETZ MAGAZINE songs or any other era you’re interested in. Wikipedia even has categories such as “Songs of 1950s.” Or search Wikipedia by singer and click on their discography for all the songs they released.

REMEMBERING OUR MUSIC Have you ever tried to remember all the words to a song from your childhood or teenage years, or something you heard your parents sing? If you can remember one or two lines of a verse or the title, you can find the whole song on the Internet. Here’s an example. I put one line of a song in Google, and there it was! Not only did all the lyrics pop up but there were links to videos of groups singing the song. There were links, too, to more information. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that the song was written in 1911. World War II was full of good music, and chances are you remember at least parts of some of the songs. Search online for World War II

Remember “Any Bonds Today?”, the 1941 song written for a war bond drive and presented in a Bugs Bunny cartoon? Or for younger seniors, how about “Blowin’ in the Wind,” Bob Dylan’s 1962 song. How many verses do you remember? When the weather warms up, you might consider haunting garage sales and antique marts for old sheet music. If you no longer have a keyboard, look on Amazon for compact 54-key electronic keyboards for less than $100. And what do you do once you’ve collected all the music from your youth? Consider sharing it. If you play well enough, ask about visiting a retirement facility and playing for the residents. Make copies of the lyrics and hand them out for a sing-along. For Alzheimer’s patients, hearing or singing music can animate silent patients, reduce stress and strengthen memory. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

By blogging, you can write posts about topics in your company’s industry and link them to your product or site. While many people have a blog on their website, platforms like Tumblr might be great to use if you haven’t set this feature up -- or just want to see what others in your industry are blogging about. Both platforms allow you to share text posts, photos, and videos about your business, brand, or individual thoughts. These platforms enable you to start conversations about a topic. Both platforms allow linking to outside websites and encourage web chatter and post shares from users that care about the same topics.

Choosing Social Media Platforms for your Business Over 97% of marketers are now using social media to engage with their audiences. But if you’re tasked with starting a social media strategy for your company, you might be wondering which type of platforms you should be on.

PAGE 15

The main platforms for Interactive Media are: a. Tumblr On Tumblr, the feeds are organized by time. However, a post can show up higher when it is re-shared by other users. When a user shares or interacts with your Tumblr content, they give it a note. When they reshare, they have the option to post a comment with the post that gets added to a thread.

b. Reddit When someone publishes something on Reddit, other users can up-vote or down-vote it. Up-voting makes a post show up higher in Reddit feeds while down-voting does the opposite. With a discussion site like Reddit, you could share a link or a post about a specific topic on a discussion board related to your industry and see how users respond. You could also start your own board if a topic you’re looking to encourage discussion on doesn’t have one yet. This is the end of this Social Media Series.
