tention. This is serious business. Now, where were we? Oh yes. Singers who actually HAVE talent. One such example, sadly, comes from quite some time ago. But his voice is instantly recognizable simply because of the raw talent he possessed. In many ways, this particular person was an unstoppable force all on his own, but his true claim to fame rested with a group of singers who came to be known as “The Four Seasons.” It took some time for the guys to settle on that name, let alone find a sound that was truly their own, but once they did, there was no stopping them. It’s instantly clear why they stuck around as long as they did and even inspired a “revival” of their style of music through a Broadway musical called “Jersey Boys,” which launched in 2005 and is STILL going strong today. With that type of staying power, you better believe we at Snippetz felt compelled, almost obligated, to dig deeper into the story of The Four Seasons. Go dig out your saddle shoes, poodle skirt and hair grease because we’re taking a trip back in time to the heyday of this iconic group!
By most accounts, 1934 wasn’t exactly a grand year, but we’re calling it grand because that was the year that Francis Castelluccio was born. Little did anyone know that little Frankie would change the face of music forever when he was cruising around the working-class neighborhood where he grew up with his three brothers.
and there that’s what I was going to do – be a successful singer.”
And a successful singer he did become! He recorded his first solo song in 1953 and it was at this time when Frankie realized the last name Castelluccio, awesome as it was, just didn’t flow for a big-time singer. He decided to change it to Valley as a nod to his friend, Texas Jean With a hardworking barber for Valley. In fact, in the “Jersey Boys” Broadway musical, one of the characters says of the neighborhood: “If you’re from my neighborhood, you got three ways out: You could join the arm. You could get mobbed up. Or – you could become a star.”

In 1956, he teamed up with brothers Tommy and Nick DeVito and Hank Majewski to form the group called “The Varietones.” Although literary nerds like the author of this article appreciated the play on words, the Evidently, those first two options group apparently didn’t appreciate didn’t exactly appeal to the young it as much because they changed boy, who at seven years old, saw their name to “The Four Lovers.” singer first Frank Sinatra at the Awww, how truly 1950s, right? NEWARK, NEW JERSEY If you were wondering where the Broadway musical got its name, it comes from the fact that The Four Seasons were started in Newark, New Jersey. OK, so we cleared up any confusion in that regard. But what about the name the Four Seasons? Where in the world did that come from? Calm down, we’re getting to that. But we truly do need to go back to Newark in the grand old year of 1934.

and nutrients needed for optimal learning. Packing your child’s lunch lets you know exactly what he or she is eating. Follow these tips, and not only will you save money, you’ll also pack a nutritious lunch that your child will enjoy!
ONE MEAL, TWO WAYS
I
--’ve prepared lunches for my family for several years, and one thing I know for sure, you’ve got to have a plan! Eating out every day is not only too expensive, the meal choices are typically unhealthy. And if your child is a picky eater like mine, buying school lunches are a waste of money. A nutritious lunch prepared at home does not have to be boring or cost you a fortune. Making small changes can save you money, like planning a lunch with ingredients that also work well for dinner meals. Remember that well-nourished adults and children have a greater chance of success at work or at school. Proper nutrition also is a key ingredient for back-to-school success because it fuels brain cells and gives your child the energy
• Practice good nutrition yourself. Children learn by association -- you need to be a role model. Discuss with them the benefits of healthy eating. • Plan ahead and have a list when you go to the store. The more time you spend in a store, the more money you spend. • Use foods from each of the five food groups: Carbohydrates, protein, dairy, fruits and vegetables. Choose whole-grain products like bread, tortillas, pita bread, bagels or whole-grain crackers. These are more nutritious, have more fiber, vitamins and minerals, and keep blood sugar steady for optimal learning. • Include the kids in the preparation process and give them choices. Take them along when grocery shopping. Let them pick a new fruit or vegetable to try each week. • Buy what’s on sale each week, then work it into a menu. Use fruits and vegetables that are in season. • Make your own ingredients. Look beyond lunch meat. Slice your own meat or grill a chicken breast and cut it into strips Continued on Page 7

You can use my recipe for Mediterranean Chicken Two Ways as a delicious dinner and a nutritious lunch. It makes eight servings (four for lunch and four for dinner). One meal with two ways to save money!
MEDITERRANEAN CHICKEN TWO WAYS 2 cups plain fat-free Greek yogurt 1 tablespoon packed fresh mint or basil 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped, or 1/2 tablespoon dried dill 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin 3 cloves garlic, finely minced 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1 1/2 teaspoons ground black pepper 4 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1/2 cup olive oil 2 tablespoons poultry seasoning 1 teaspoon dried oregano 2 pounds chicken breast tenders 1 English (seedless) cucumber 2 large ripe tomatoes 4 whole-wheat pitas
3. Heat a grill pan or heavy skillet on medium-high. Grill chicken 10 to 12 minutes or until no longer pink in center, turning once. 4. Meanwhile, cut cucumber and tomato into chunks; toss, in large bowl, with the remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt and pepper, and remaining lemon juice, oil and garlic. For Dinner: Divide the chicken, yogurt sauce and the cucumber and tomato mixture evenly. Place half of the ingredients in sealed containers. Transfer remaining chicken to serving plates and serve with the remaining cucumber mixture and yogurt sauce. Prepare a side of orzo or couscous to serve, if desired. For Lunch: Toast pitas in a large dry pan over medium-high heat on the stovetop, or on the top rack of an oven, or in a toaster oven until lightly browned, about 1 minute on each side, turning once. Fill the pitas with the remaining chicken, and top with yogurt sauce and the cucumber mixture. Place in a reusable container in a lunchbox along with fruit. ***
2. Using a shallow container or pie plate, combine 2 tablespoons of the lemon juice, 1 1/2 tablespoons oil, poultry seasoning,

elcome to the new Snippetz! I will be a monthly contributor to the magazine and will try to provide you with helpful and useful information that can hopefully demystify computers and give you the confidence to understand what your computer is telling you. For this first article, I want to introduce myself and or store and tell you how we can help you. Please note at the end of the article is an e-mail address where you can send questions about anything computer, internet, or IT related. I own Simple Computer Repair, a computer and electronics repair shop right here in Monument. We are the only full-service computer and IT service center in the Tri-Lakes area. We opened for business September 16th, 2016. In July 2018, we merged with Monument Computers and moved all operations to our store at 1445 Cipriani Loop behind the Kum & Go off highway 105.
Don’t wait! Call now and we’ll rush you a FREE Information Kit with all the details.
even if you didn’t need a haircut, you stopped by to chat about the weather, sports, or even computers! When you walk in to our store, you will notice that nearly all computer monitors face out. A customer can readily see that we aren’t looking at your pictures or last year’s tax return. We don’t take your computer behind a wall or a door to work on it. We work on it out in the open, and many times, our customers come back and watch the technician or ask questions as we work on their computer. While we are proud of our shop and our customer service, for some folks, it is just impractical for them to bring their computer to us. In those cases, we offer a very affordable athome service to quickly resolve any problems. Being a small businessman myself, I feel for those of you trying to run a business and struggling with Information Technology (IT) issues. We offer the same great repair and problem-solving services for small businesses. Plus, we can help ensure your networks are secure and controlled. We also offer 24/7 monitoring of your IT system to ensure hardware and software health and stave off catastrophic failures that leave you dead in the water at a price 10 times less than the big guys out there. Simple Computer repair can be your IT department.
When I opened the store, I wanted to provide a different experience for my customers. Have you ever gone to a big-box store for repair and been charged just for somebody to look at your computer? Have they flooded you with geek-speak and then quoted you an outrageous price to fix what seemed like a minor issue? Or did they suggest that you just go buy a new computer from aisle 14? If you have been frustrated with this kind of service, In the coming months, I hope our articles will be helpful in answering come in and give us a try. some of the most common questions I have tried to build a business I receive every day. If you have where the customer feels not only a question about your computer, comfortable coming in, but also services available in our area, or welcome. Lexicon of Dr. Ron Ross’s
Life-Giving Words praiseworthy.
THIS WEEK’S LIFE-LIFTING WORD:
“WORTHY” by Ron Ross
T
his life-lifting word, “worthy,” confuses me. Am I worthy of love and acceptance just because I’m a human? Author Brene Brown thinks so. She states, “You’re imperfect, and you’re wired for struggle, but you are worthy of love and belonging.” I believe everyone, as a human being, is worthy of respect because all are created in the image of God, but I wonder … •
Are you worthy of love if you’re abusive?
•
Are you worthy of promotion if you’re a sloth?
•
Are you worthy of friendship if you’re an enemy?
•
Are you worthy of joy if you’re gloomy?
•
Are you worthy of peace if you’re hostile?
•
Are you worthy of kindness if you’re ruthless?
•
Are you worthy of generosity if you’re stingy?
It seems worthiness increases or decreases from time to time! You can be worthy of love in the morning as you kiss your mate goodbye, but your evening grumpiness — well, that’s something else. So are you a part-time love-worthy person? Is this possible? Confusing. To add to the befuddlement, “worth” often refers to the price or value of something, such as a diamond or a used car. And to compound the confusion even further, “worthy” is used in a variety of other ways: A boat can be seaworthy; an event can be newsworthy; a product can be trustworthy; an idea can be noteworthy, and a deed can be
However, the kind of “worth” or “worthy” I consider to be a life-lifting word, refers to character — for instance, a person of remarkable achievement, strong integrity or extreme compassion who is worthy of admiration and honor. Sometimes worth shines through for all to see in public figures, like Martin Luther King or Steve Jobs; but the radiance of worth is just as strong in common-folk, like Meals on Wheels volunteers or Sunday school teachers. These are people you admire, ones who inspire — people of worth. Worthy people are a source of inspiration and aspiration. They inspire you to be more like them — more worthy. Unfortunately, the person who’s most critical of who you are, is you! According to author Dennis Waitley, “The most splendid achievement of all is the constant striving to surpass yourself and be worthy of your own approval.” Rabbi Yehuda Berg echoed the same message: “It’s our own small voice within that is our oppressor; it says we are not worthy and not powerful enough. Our limited beliefs are the real foe we need to fight and conquer.” As you strive for worth, it’s easy — even natural — to be your own worst enemy. “Yes, I can. No, I can’t.” A real battle! Can you overcome that small voice within? What does it take to win the war? Can you be worthy? Let’s clear the confusion. We live in a world where receiving is preceded by giving: first the seed, then the flower; first the investment, then the return; first the blessing, then the benefit. This universal law governs what’s considered “worthy” too, and so to win the worthywar you must first, think thoughts worthy of consideration; second, speak words worthy of being heard; and third, do deeds worthy of your best effort. Worthy thoughts, worthy words, and worthy deeds. First give these three, and then you’ll be worthy indeed.

sounds and smells of the battlefield had been relentlessly looping in my head. The suffering seemed endless. And so, thinking there were no other options of escape, I turned to suicide.”
OUR MISSION -
HELP STOP VETERAN SUICIDE By Michael Sherman (4kidzsports)
M
any of you are not aware of the serious epidemic of Veteran suicide in the U.S. Veteran Suicide is a growing issue and is a crisis that can only be improved through recognition and discussion in society. Did you know that about 20 US military veterans take their own lives every day. The number of US military veterans affected by Veteran Depression and Suicide is demoralizing. The number of vets with families and children who need help is staggering. Statistics show the suicide rate of US military veterans aged 18 to 34 steadily increased from 2006 to 2016, with a very troubling jump of more than 10 percent from 2015 to 2016. That translates into 45 deaths per 100,000 veterans, the highest of any age group. For veterans of Operations Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Enduring Freedom (OEF) it’s even worse: About 11-20 out of every 100 veterans (or between 1120%) who served in OIF or OEF shows symptoms of PTSD in any given year. Similarly, for the earlier Gulf War, Desert Storm: About 12 out of every 100 Gulf War Veterans (or 12%) have PTSD in any given year. We find this shocking, and quite frankly, totally unacceptable. That’s why we have made it our mission to do something about veteran suicide. To make a difference in the lives of our country’s brave heroes! Just take a look at these heartbreaking stories: FROM A VETERAN WHO SURVIVED:

“Luckily, I survived. I avoided becoming one of the 20 Veterans who kill themselves every day in this country. But I also witnessed firsthand all the ways that our nation’s mental health resources fail our fighting men and women. Department of Veterans Affairs facilities and the military simply aren’t equipped to properly treat sick vets. We must do better.”

THE WIFE OF A VETERAN WROTE: “As a caregiver of a catastrophically disabled veteran, I’m in a lifelong battle to support my husband. Too often, the VA forces me into battle alone.” “Eight years ago, my husband stepped on an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan. He lost his left leg and much of his left arm, and barely survived.” “Mike’s war was over. But mine would be fought on the home front. I was going to have to battle for him. Sometimes that battle takes place in the hospital, as I help my husband through another surgery — 119 and counting. Sometimes it’s in our home, as I try to juggle three young kids, a plumbing issue and a health care bill, all while trying not to burn dinner.” “Caregivers like me are supporting catastrophically wounded veterans all over the country. All too often, we’re carrying out that mission alone, with insufficient help from the very government that sent our husbands, wives, sons and daughters off to war. My husband proudly volunteered to serve and wanted to go to the front lines. Never did we think that the greatest fight would occur once he came home.”

WHEN TRAINING SEEMS TO GO BACKWARD
Behavioral therapists call this “extinction burst” -- a last hurrah, of sorts, by the brain. It’s one more huge attempt to get that old “reward” back. It’s very similar to someone who’s on a strict diet for a long time, and despite seeing great results, suddenly begins talking themselves into eating that piece of cake they’ve seen in the bakery window. Now, cats (probably) don’t talk themselves into starting up old behaviors. Jake may simply be reacting to an old habit resurfacing.
Keep working with him on staying off the counter. When he looks as if he’s going to jump up, redirect his DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I tried attention by calling him over. But there is hope. The Veteran’s Administration has finally taken notice and is trying to help. The VA believes everyone has a role to play in preventing suicide. In a recent statement they said in part: “That’s why we are working with community partners across the country — including faith communities, employers, schools, and health care organizations — to prevent suicide among all Veterans, including those who may never come to VA for care.”
DEAR GREG: Don’t give up on training Jake to stay off the counter. If you continue to be consistent in rewarding the behavior that you want from him, and not rewarding the behavior you don’t want, Jake should settle down.
What’s happening with Jake is not unusual. He previously had a habit of jumping up on the counter, and his “reward” at the time was to get atHowever, this is NOT enough. CBD OIL CAN INTERFERE WITH OTHER MEDICATIONS DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 49-yearold woman who had a massive heart attack in April. My father died of a massive heart attack at 49. I have four stents in three arteries and am on Brilinta, low-dose aspirin, blood pressure medication, etc. I have essential tremor, first noticing the tremors in middle school. The tremor is in my hands, making writing nearly impossible, and I have head bobs. I have an internal tremor that never stops. A previous practitioner prescribed a month’s trial of beta blockers several years ago. I noticed no relief with the tremor but was physically ill for the first 30 minutes of the morning in the first two weeks. Recently, I found an online blog regarding essential tremor and CBD oil. Nearly all of the bloggers found some level of relief using this treatment. If I choose to try CBD oil to assist with my tremor, is there a risk of it interfering with my heart and blood pressure medications? -- M.M. ANSWER: Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a nonpsychoactive substance found in Cannabis, as opposed to tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the best-known psychoactive component. CBD is typically sold as an oil and has been receiving press as a potential treatment for a wide variety of medical issues. Many or most of these claims have no data to support them. Anecdotal reports, such as most blogs, are neither reliable nor scientific (and may or may not be true). There also is an issue with proving the dosage and purity of products said to contain CBD.
or, there is some evidence: Studies in mice have shown benefit with CBD, although a single case report showed effectiveness of THC but not CBD in essential tremor. The issue of drug interactions is a significant one. CBD inhibits two powerful pathways the body uses to detoxify drugs, the CPY3A4 and CYP2D6 systems. This is a serious issue for you. Ticagrelor (Brilinta), an anticoagulant, is metabolized by CYP3A4, as are some of the statin drugs usually prescribed to people with heart blockages. The effect of the anticoagulant could be much higher than expected, leading to bleeding risk. Other commonly used heart medications are metabolized by CYP2D6, and the effect on these medications is unpredictable. I can’t recommend CBD products given the medications you are taking, but would suggest you consider alternative treatments. You may have read about deep brain stimulation and ultrasound, two powerful and effective treatments for people whose symptoms have not responded to standard treatments. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: This question is for my husband. How safe is drinking tea while on warfarin? He has his INR checked monthly, and for the most part it stays between 2 and 3. He watches his vitamin K intake regularly. He has read conflicting stories of how tea interacts with warfarin by making the INR levels high. -- S.J. ANSWER: Tea comes in two major types: black tea, which is fermented, and green tea, which is not. Black tea has no known interactions with warfarin (Coumadin). Green tea contains small amounts of vitamin K, which could make the INR lower and the warfarin less effective. However, the effect is likely to be small. Further, if he drinks a consistent amount per day, his dose can be adjusted to reflect his vitamin K intake. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell. edu. and lava in 78 A.D. and forgotten until 1748, when it blocked some construction. Historians have been studying the remains, and the art and culture, since then. The city was a summer home for wealthy Romans, and the eruption covered and saved the furnishings under the rock. Information about furniture and paintings inspired copies in the 18th century. A brazier that was used to heat a Roman bath in the city and a similar one in a brothel were copied and sold in the late 1800s. The popular bronze brazier had a pieced rim and a three-part foot with men with paw feet holding the fire pit on their heads. These copies were made with a green patina. One sold at a Cakebread auction in New Orleans for $500. It is 10 inches high and almost 6 inches in diameter. ***
Q: I have heard that some antiques
and vintage items are dangerous to own. Is this true? I am afraid to use my orange Fiesta dishes because friends
say they were made with uranium and are radioactive.
A: Yes, some antique medicines, cos-
metics and other objects can be dangerous or even fatal. Most vintage or antique things you buy at shops or shows have been cleaned or checked for dangerous things. Some are mercury (barometers), flammable materials (stove polish that explodes when heated), arsenic (cleanser for complexion), opium (medicine to relieve pain), morphine (to sooth teething babies), alcohol (a high percentage in bitters, medicines, etc.) and, of course, anything in a bumpy poison bottle or a bottle labeled poison. Uranium was used in the clay or glaze of some items before the strict food and drug laws were passed in the U.S., but some countries still use glazes that are not safe. Your orange dishes are safe to use. If you find forgotten drugstore stock, clean it carefully in a well-ventilated area. Empty all medicine bottles; children may try to drink something. *** CURRENT PRICES Rocker, shaker, shawl, woven tape seat, mushroom caps, No. 7, 40 x 31 x 26 inches, $105. mess! Here’s how: To make the basic papier-mache goop for any form, stir together equal parts of all-purpose flour and water in a large bowl. (Two cups of each is good to start.) Tear newspaper into strips about 1-inch wide.
CREATING PAPIER-MACHE PIGS IS GOOEY FUN
C
--reativity is at your elbow, always available. I try to remember that. If you are a parent who, like many people, considers himor herself “noncreative,” just think of creativity as a water faucet. Turn the stream on, and it can be a steady flow into your everyday life. One thing that works for me is to let myself get sidetracked from the original plan. That’s when I discover that having fun with kids is what’s most important, not the end result. It can happen naturally when you stir up a gloppy, messy batch of papier-mache, a craft you probably remember from your own primary-school days. Grab stuff from the recycle bin and magically turn newspaper, plastic water bottles, golf tees and paper-towel tubes into creatures like these whimsical pigs. This activity has all the basics for family fun: tradition, creativity and a gooey
To create a form for a pig and piglets, start with a small-size plastic water bottle for a piglet and a plastic liter-size bottle for a pig. Place a bottle in front of you horizontally and note how the spout can be the snout. For the pig’s legs, tape four trimmed bathroom tissue tubes to the bottom of the body of the bottle. For piglet legs, poke the pointed end of four golf tees into the bottom of the body of a small bottle.
over the form. Lay the coated strips any which way, covering the entire surface. Smooth out the wrinkles as you go, making the surface as smooth as possible. Let dry. Make a second layer, if you wish.
Make ears by cutting cardboard into two triangles. Tape in place just beyond the neck of the bottle.
Paint the pig with poster or acrylic paints. The brighter, the better!
Dip the newspaper strips one at a time into the mixture, remove excess goop with your fingers, and then drape strips
Poke a spring into what was the base of the bottle for a curly tail. For a piggy bank, cut a slit through the top to insert coins. Cut out a flap underneath the pig
when you wish to retrieve the money. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. Once their scam was revealed, one of them was sentenced to 10 years in prison with three years suspended. The other was sentenced to five years with two years suspended. The district court judge, however, wasn’t letting it go at that.
JUDGE ORDERS PUBLIC SHAMING FOR FAKE VETS
T
--wo not-too-bright Montana men tried to pretend they were veterans, one even claiming he’d served seven combat tours. They weren’t trying to claim benefits. What they wanted was to have their criminal cases moved to the Veterans Treatment Court with the hope they’d get lighter sentences.
Before they can be eligible for parole, both men have to handwrite the names of all 6,700 American servicemembers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. They have to write letters of apology to veterans’ groups such as the American Legion and Disabled American Veterans. They also have to hand-copy the obituaries of the 40 Montanans killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Once they get out, they need to do 441 hours of community service, one hour
for every Montanan killed in combat since the Korean War. Then there’s the signs. Once they get out of prison, both men have to visit the Montana Veterans Memorial twice a year for the time their sentences were suspended, wearing a sign that says, “I am a liar. I am not a veteran. I stole valor. I have dishonored all veterans.” Both men objected to wearing the sign. Of course they did. They can write names and letters of apology in private in their prison cells. The signs, worn
out in public, will show everyone just what kind of men they really are. The judge, however, held firm, citing case law that shows he could impose that sentence. What they apparently didn’t know was that the judge, this judge, had established the local Veterans Treatment Center five years ago, the very center they were trying to scam.
