It used to be much easier to disappear. Not that we at Snippetz know for sure; it’s not like we’ve ever made anyone disappear before. No dirty secrets here, we swear.

Anyway, this is a special article because this time around, not only have we decided to look into some famous examples of people disappearing, but we’re enlisting the help of you, our faithful readers to help us find someone very important: Baldo.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. First and foremost, let’s take a peek into some famous disappearances throughout the course of history, shall we?

THE LOST COLONY OF ROANOKE

My recipe for The Kitchen Diva’s Detox Soup is a nutrition-packed bowlful of goodness that’s based on a DASH diet recipe.

This soup has a high amount of potassium, iron and calcium, and is wonderful for cleansing your digestive system and flushing out toxins to kick start a healthier new year. It contains plant-based proteins, antioxidants and healthy fats, and best of all, you can eat it several times throughout the day, if desired.

KITCHEN DIVA’S DETOX SOUP Soaking the chia seeds in water makes them easier to digest, and their nutrients are better absorbed and assimilated in your body as they “sweep” through your intestinal system to eliminate the buildup of waste.

1/2 cup water 2 tablespoons chia seeds 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil or coco-

1. Heat oven to 400 degrees F. 2. Rinse and drain the chickpeas, and dry by rolling them around in a kitchen towel.

Combine the paprika, cumin, cayenne and salt in a large bowl. Add chickpeas and the oil; toss or stir to coat evenly.

3. Transfer chickpeas to a parchment-lined baking sheet and spread them out in a single layer. Bake 15 minutes, and then shake the tray so chickpeas will bake evenly.

4. Continue to bake chickpeas for another 10 to 12 minutes or until crunchy. Sprinkle some of the chickpeas on each bowl of soup. Allow any remaining chickpeas to cool on the pan and transfer them to a resealable plastic bag.

1. Pour the water into a jar with a tightfitting lid or a drinking glass. Add the chia seeds and shake the jar or stir the seeds with a spoon around in the glass for about 5 minutes. Set the seeds aside to soak and proceed with the recipe.

2. Using a large pot, add the oil and heat over medium high heat. Add the onions, poultry seasoning, cumin and cayenne pepper to the stockpot and stir to combine.

Cook the onions for 1 to 2 minutes, and add the garlic, broccoli, spinach, bell pepper, carrots and celery. Cook for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally.

3. Stir in the chia seeds and water, and turn the heat to high. Bring the soup to a boil and then turn the heat down to a simmer, stirring occasionally, for 8 to 12 minutes, until the vegetables are soft. Stir in the parsley and the lemon, lime or apple cider vinegar.

4. To puree the soup, remove the lid completely from the blender. Start the blender on low with nothing in it. Slowly add the soup, one ladleful at a time to the uncovered, running blender on the lowest setting, until the blender jar is half full and that batch of the soup is smooth.

5. Pour the pureed soup into a large bowl and repeat the pureeing steps until all of the soup is a smooth consistency. Pour the soup back into the pot to re-heat, if needed. Top with Spice Roasted Chickpeas, if desired.

Chickpeas are high in protein and seasoning, and roasting them adds a spicy, crunchy texture for this soup or as snack.

I discussed the local Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and their attributes, and I compared the various Internet web browsers. But what if your computer seems to be slow when performing other functions. This could include when the computer is starting (booting up), when opening a program or app, when running programs, or when doing other functions.

Let’s discuss some of the reasons your computer may be slow.

Let’s start by looking at the computer itself.

How old is your computer?

Searching the Internet for the average life span of a computer returns the common answer of three to five years. This is a generalization based on the pace of technology development and the rate at which common parts in a computer wear out. An older computer is just going to be slower. At Simple Computer Repair, we have refurbished and repaired computers six to ten years old. When wondering whether a computer can still be useful, we generally ask the primary purpose of the computer as some tasks can be more demanding of the computer than others. An older computer can be repaired and used for e-mail and light web browsing whereas a newer and more complex computer is needed for higher-level gaming, graphics manipulation and processes requiring heavy mathematical processing.

We’ll talk about repairing versus buying new in a future article.

When a customer brings us a computer that is running slow, we first look at the hardware in the computer. We run extensive diagnostics to determine the health of components such as the motherboard, the main processor, the Random Access Memory (RAM), and the disk drive(s).

The vast majority of the time, if a hardware component is to blame for the slowdown, it is usually a failing hard drive. In these cases, we usually recommend installing a Solid-State Drive (SSD), which is a newer technology than the old hard drives with a 5x to 10x performance increase. In the past, large SSD’s were prohibitively expensive, but recently the prices of SSD’s have really dropped making them affordable for nearly every application.

Upgrading the RAM can increase the operating speed of your computer. Simply put, RAM is a holding bin for information pulled from a storage device and waiting to be used in a program or application.

Increasing the amount of RAM and/ or upgrading to RAM that can process information faster has the potential of speeding up your computer. However, this is very dependent upon the programs that you are running on your computer. Simple text programs like word processors or e-mail do not require fast or large RAM arrays.

Programs that rely on many mathematical

calculations such as large spreadsheets, and programs that are graphics heavy such as photo-editing programs and more advanced games definitely stress RAM and are helped by larger and faster RAM arrays.

For the majority of today’s programs, we recommend 8 MB (megabytes) of RAM as the minimum you should have installed.

After we have ruled out hardware issues, we then look at software. First, which version of Windows® or macOS® are you running? You should always be running the most up-to-date operating system for your computer. For PCs, there are few good reasons for not running Windows 10.

Windows 10 is arguably the best version of Windows Microsoft has deployed. It is fast, secure, and easy to use. And for my customers who claim they don’t want to give up Windows 7 “because Windows 10 would be too hard to learn”, I say that Windows 10 can and does look and run remarkably like Windows 7. And if you still aren’t convinced, Microsoft will end all support for Windows 7 on January 14th, 2020. So there will be no security or safety updates released any more. If you are doing financial transactions on a Windows 7 computer, it’s really only a matter of time before you find yourself in trouble.

For Mac users, the version of the operating system you can load on your computer is limited by the age of your computer.

However, we still see a lot of Macs with old operating systems. You can check online with Apple support to find out which version of macOS or OS X your computer can take.

Once we are sure you have the best operating system installed for your computer, we spend a great deal of time looking at how you have your computer configured. One of the sneakiest thieves of computer speed is the “program running in the background”.

Often, when a user downloads a new program on their computer, they also download other programs that they may or may not be aware of. These programs run in the background hogging processor power and slowing down your computer.

Updaters, monitors, tool bars, search bars, and help programs are chief among these.

We scour our customers computers rooting out these programs as few of them are beneficial for the user.

Finally, the last culprit contributing to a slow computer is malware.

Viruses can slow down a computer while they are operating behind the scenes, but normally cause much greater damage than just slowing the computer. Adware, on the other hand, can seriously drag your computer speed down without causing any other damage. Adware is usually picked up while browsing web pages and is stored in the form of cookies that can track your online shopping and browsing habits. While not necessarily malicious, adware can slow your computer to a crawl.

atman fought The Joker, Han Solo faced down Darth Vader, and Snow White and the seven dwarfs dealt with the evil Queen.

Every good story has a hero and a villain; the hero eventually confronts the bullying scoundrel, and good wins out over evil. The singular characteristic of nearly every hero is this life-lifting word: BOLDNESS. Heroes are bold — that doesn’t mean they are obnoxious and loud, but it does mean they possess a quiet inner strength to call upon when needed.

Heroes are bold — even so, they may be afraid, even terrified; but they overcome their fears with principles, passion, and power.

Heroes are bold — they can discern between good and evil, stand up for what is right, and stand against what is wrong.

You too can be bold — here’s how: Be willing to talk to people you don’t know or who don’t look or think like you. We live in a fractured society.

It’s always US against THEM —and the US seldom reaches out to THEM to discover what they know, think, or feel. Be bold; meet others, and listen to what they have to say.

Be willing to visit places you’ve never been and discover things you’ve never seen. I took my young family to Africa in the 1960s. Before going to Africa, we had traveled very little, so the move to Africa was a bold move. But wow — was it worth it! We learned so much about other people, which, in turn, taught us a lot about ourselves.

Be willing to ask deep questions. Years ago, I heard someone say, “The two most important questions you must answer are who am I and why am I here?” Since then, I’ve added two more questions, “Where did I come from and where am I going?” Only the bold ask such questions because to ask means you are not afraid of what the answers might require.

Be willing to break the rules of propriety without being insolent. There will come a time in life when you see a wrong happen and want to make it right. This may require that you speak truth to power and boldly stand alone as others scoff.

The bold inspire others to stand for what is right and against what is wrong.

The fearful, the weak-kneed, and the calloused are not bold; they are boring and pathetic.

The bold step up when others step back; they speak up when others shut up, and they act when others freeze.

Why? Because heroes are bold: poised, honorable, and secure.

And finally, the bold can distinguish between important and trivial. Some things are worth fighting for, and some are not. Some people are worth following, and some are not. Some ideas are good, and some are bad.

The bold know the difference and act appropriately, and their “action” makes them bold.

When I think of boldness, I think of Rosa Parks who said, “You must never be fearful about what you are doing when it is right.” Her arrest after refusing to give up her seat on the bus inspired African-Americans around the country to be bold in fighting for equal rights. Rosa Parks personifies boldness, and her action is testimony to Robert Frost’s enlightening quote, “Freedom lies in being bold.”

RISK OF SURROGACY AT ADVANCED AGE DEAR DR. ROACH: Would you please comment on common or uncommon issues that might be expected in a pregnancy at age 57? I am overall very healthy, with no issues other than slightly elevated LDL. I have not gone through menopause. I had four full-term pregnancies, the last at age 35 (after which I had my tubes tied), and no miscarriages. I asked my doctor two years ago if I would have an issue being a surrogate and was told there was no reason I couldn’t be, but my current physician told me that it can be very dangerous at my age.

I am concerned that the practice is just covering itself against any liability. I realize that this is my decision alone and I would not hold my doctors accountable, but I’d also like the real truth regarding any potential issues I would be likely to encounter. I appreciate your thoughts. -- M.V. ANSWER: I admire your willingness to consider being a surrogate.

However, the risks of pregnancy in a 57-year-old woman are significant.

A study from the U.K. from 2016 quantified the risks pretty thoroughly; however, of the 233 women studied, only two of them were older than 57, so your risks are probably higher than the average risk for an older mother in the study (which was defined here as 48 years or older at the date of delivery).

Before I go over the risks, let me point out that one major risk for older mothers, Down syndrome, may not apply, since the ovum (egg) you would be carrying would come from another

Compared with younger mothers, older mothers have a higher risk for: high blood pressure during pregnancy (15% vs. 5%); pre-eclampsia, also called toxemia (6% vs. 2%); diabetes during pregnancy (18% vs.

4%); hemorrhage after delivery (26% vs. 15%); Caesarean section (78% vs. 33%); preterm delivery (22% vs.

8%); and admission of the baby to the intensive care unit (3% vs. less than 1%). Miscarriage rate (after 11 weeks) in women over 55 is estimated to be about 10%, compared with 1% in younger women. Maternal death is much more likely for older women than younger; however, that risk is small, less than 2 per 1,000 in a separate Swedish study of mothers over 45.

Overall, these risks are not small.

You should think through your risks before making a decision. I’m disappointed in the lack of advice you received. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: The 71-yearold woman from a recent column who finds sticking her finger to test her blood glucose too painful to be willing to do it likely was never told that while sticking her finger at the tip IS painful, sticking at the side of the end of the finger is barely painful, if at all. I find myself surprised that those who stick fingers for blood at the hospital don’t seem to know this either. Shame on them. -- R.S.

design looks like some sort of house with a figure on each side surrounded by falling leaves. The bottom and the border have repeating crescent patterns and the inner rim is fluted. We would like to know what this was used for.

Your mold probably was made for lebkuchen, a soft ginger honey cake popular in Germany for centuries at Christmas. Lebkuchen dates back to 14th-century Germany. The earliest was made in monasteries, where, long before sugar, bakers kneaded flour and eggs with honey from local beekeepers.

That gave lebkuchen its unique flavor and acted as a preservative. The dough was claylike and pressed into wooden molds that were delicately carved with pictures that told the stories of Christmas and the saints, like St. Nicholas.

When trade routes opened, spices were added to the dough, making it more like it is today.

Lebkuchen is still made around the holidays, and molds and recipes can be found online. Your mold is probably from the 19th century, and if clean, there is no reason why it couldn’t still be used.
