“Many a good hanging prevents a bad marriage.” – William Shakespeare Master Technicians

t’s supposed to be one of the happiest days of your life. You are starting a life with that special someone, expressing your love for each other and vowing to stay together through good times and bad. But what does it take to make that big day perfect? And better yet, what does it cost? In the grand scheme of things, does planning and stressing out for months over picking the right color of the flowers that will be on the guests’ tables really make the day better? There’s no guarantee that your marriage will be successful, no matter how much or how little money you pump into the festivities. Nevertheless, Snippetz had to take a glimpse into the world of weddings to find out what some people are willing to go through for the sake of pulling off that perfect day…even if it all falls just a bit short.

Now here’s a shocker for you: The states with the smallest number of wedding guests are (drumroll please) Hawaii and Nevada! Both average less than 80 guests. Perhaps gamblers who happen to wander in off the streets and Elvis impersonators don’t count as guests. The prize for the largest average number of guests goes to Iowa with 215.

As of October 2012, the average wedding cost $28,082. Really?! That’s a decent down payment on a house! With reception food costs averaging over $4,000, it’s enough to make anyone consider rounding up some family to pitch in and work out a potluck-type affair. Gifts for the bride and groom’s parents average $148. Did you even know you were supposed to buy gifts for the parents? Hair services cost about $71. Flowers and decorations cost about $1,800. A DJ costs about $748 but a live band could cost you about $1,751. Invitations, save the date cards, place cards, etc. altogether could cost about $800 total.

WEDDING “DO’S” Weddings are no exception to the changing trends. So what’s in? For starters, brides and grooms…aw, who are we kidding? The brides really get the final say in the wedding details. And flowers are just one of those details that changes with the times. This year, the fresh-picked, natural, under-stated look is in. Gone are the mile-high centerpieces of years past, inhibiting conversation and tempting

Naturally, all those costs vary depending on where your nuptials take place. For a wedding set in Manhattan (New York, not Kansas) the average wedding costs about $65,824; West Virginia’s average wedding costs about $14,203.

anyone with a mischievous streak to knock them over. Another “do” is incorporating “green.” And by that, we mean recycled or tree-free papers used for invitations. And what about seeds or organic snacks instead of the traditional wedding favors? Looks like pastel mints and miniature bottles of bubbles are on their way out. Sad. In the age of iPods, it seems logical that couples are choosing to personalize their reception music using playlists straight from their personal electronic devices. Why spend hundreds of dollars on a DJ who is just going to play the same cliché wedding songs over and over when you can just push “Play” and get your dance on?

WEDDING “DON’TS” It’s sometimes hard to keep up with the trends but there are some wedding “don’ts” that aren’t likely to Weddings... Continued on Page 3

change anytime soon. For example, it’s a major no-no to marry someone whom you have already married and divorced once before…and who has taken out a restraining order on you. Timothy Cole didn’t get the memo. He was arrested during his wedding in New York when police arrived after receiving reports that he was arguing with one of the guests. When police realized who was involved, they arrested Cole and charged him with first-degree criminal contempt for being too close to his bride, otherwise known as the woman he wasn’t to come within 300 feet of. Don’t play Russian roulette at your reception. In 2010, a couple who married in Astrakhan, Russia had a guest who thought it would be fun to show how dangerous he could be by pretending to shoot himself in the head after a friend supposedly emptied the pistol’s chamber of all the bullets. Perhaps the unsuspecting man should’ve checked the chamber himself because with one squeeze of the trigger, he shot a rubber bullet into his temple. Don’t say “I don’t.” At least, not if you’re getting married in Styr, Austria. Apparently, that’s what Tina Albrecht did when the official asked her that all-important question. She said it was a joke and immediately corrected herself, but according to Austrian law, if either party replies in the negative to said question, the wedding must be cancelled and can’t be rescheduled for 10 weeks. The law is intended to prevent forced marriages but it would appear it also serves as a great deterrent for anyone with a slightly warped sense of humor. Don’t set your wedding location on fire. Just don’t, unless you’re like Tatsuhiko Kawata of Japan. This particular groom really did not want to go through with his wedding so he set the resort hotel on fire. He was quoted as saying, “I thought if I set a fire, I wouldn’t have to go through with the wedding.” And why was he so hesitant? Well, Mr. Kawata already had a Mrs. Kawata. That’s definitely a good reason not to get married. It certainly won’t solve the problem he likely had to face, though, when he called his wife to have her bail him out of jail for committing arson at his own wedding.

Don’t throw your bouquet at an airplane. Here’s why: The bouquet could get sucked into the plane’s engine, causing it to explode. Bride Isidoro Pensieri of Italy hired a microlight plane to fly past the crowd at their wedding so she could throw the bouquet to the eager single ladies in the crowd. And guess what happened to her bouquet? You guessed it. The plane crashed into a hostel and Pensieri had to be taken to a hospital to be treated for multiple fractures.

Don’t choose a random person to fill in as your best man. Why? He might decide to rob your DJ. In 2009, Nadia Clay and Terrance Simmons were happily celebrating at their reception when their best man, Johnny Smith, decided to pull a gun on DJ Kendrick Shepherd. Smith stole an expensive crystal decanter full of liquor and took off, but not before shooting a couple rounds into the air for effect. Perhaps it would’ve been better just to promote another groomsman to fill in as the best man if he was out of commission.

HONESTY My son Zachary, 4, came screaming out of the bathroom to tell me he’d dropped his toothbrush in the toilet. So I fished it out and threw it in the garbage. Zachary stood there thinking for a moment, then ran to my bathroom and came out with my toothbrush. He held it up and said with a charming little smile, “We better throw this one out too then, ‘cause it fell in the toilet a few days ago. KETCHUP A woman was trying hard to get the ketchup to come out of the jar. During her struggle the phone rang so she asked her 4-year-old daughter to answer the phone. “It’s the minister, Mommy,” the child said to her mother. Then she added, “Mommy can’t come to the phone to talk to you right now. She’s hitting the bottle.” ELDERLY While working for an organization that delivers lunches to elderly shut-ins, I used to take my 4-year-old daughter on my afternoon

veryone should be very proud. The rain dances seem to be working! But let’s keep it up. We should all make rain dancing and good watering practices a life long habit. This growing season has me so excited. There is nothing like rain for your plants. It never matters how much you hand-water it never has the effect on plants that rain has. So in keeping with our promise to follow good-watering practices, there is a plethora of fun drought-tolerant and fire-resistant plants to consider this growing season, after we rain dance of course.

Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side. With a 5-lb potato sack in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax. Each day you’ll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb potato sacks. Then try 50-lb potato sacks and then eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-lb potato sack in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. (I’m at this level.)

A great place to start is groundcovers. They are beautiful and are a great alternative to grass in creating a defensible space around your home. A list of groundcovers for

he Affordable Care Act was signed in 2010, but at 2,409 pages, it’s no wonder so many people don’t understand all of it. Seniors especially are hit hard by not knowing what changes to Medicare and Medicaid are coming. That makes us more vulnerable to scammers.

We are a federally designated debt relief agency pursuant to Title 11 of the U.S. Code, to help people file bankruptcy

A UCLA psychologist, Shelley Taylor, recently did a study to determine why it’s easy to scam seniors. In a lab experiment with senior and young adults, seniors rated as “trustworthy” more pictures of people than the young adults did. In other words, we’re not picking up on clues. In a more telling experiment using brain imaging, it was discovered that seniors have less brain activity in the region that processes “risk and subtle danger.”

1) You get a call from a health company. You’re told that Medicare will pay for some type of medical equipment that you might need. You just need to give them your Medicare number. (Think about it: Why would you give your information to a complete stranger?) 2) You get a call saying that you’ll need a new Medicare card because of the Affordable Care Act, but they need to confirm your personal information. (Think about it: If you already have a Medicare card, they already know your information.) If someone has tried to get your Medicare information, report it at 1-800-447-8477. ANSWER: Your friend’s lapses fill the criteria that indicate a need for assisted living. Although 50 percent of people with a degree of dementia make this decision for themselves, that leaves 50 percent who do not. Giving up one’s home and one’s car has unpleasant ramifications for that half who want to continue living independently. Close relatives can convince these people that they need help. A doctor can step in and strongly advise such moves. You and your friends would do this woman a service by contacting her children and telling them exactly what you have told me.

Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

eorgia isn’t a state known for it’s eye-popping tourist attractions. It doesn’t really have an “it” factor. Atlanta is a pretty notable city, but it tends to live in the shadow of popular southern-city New Orleans. I think people generally think of Georgia as another southern state; comfortable, but unexciting. Folks who live down there are thought of as the simple type. They work hard, raise their families, and have excellent food. They also do weekend activities like go to the park and hunt garage sales. Actually, it doesn’t sound that different from people around here (of course, we have better places to hike, ski, and fish). I mean, my parents are the garage sale-type. I don’t know how many treasures they’ve stumbled upon in someone’s yard. You know the saying, “another man’s trash...” One Georgia couple may have found a potential goldmine at a yard sale four years ago. They’ve just decided to cash in. After digging through an old $100 box of letters they found at an antique sale, Cliff and Arlene Kluge came across something they didn’t expect. It was the legendary secret recipe for Coca-Cola. Arlene says after carrying around the recipe for a couple of weeks, showing to her friends as a cool conversation piece, she contacted the Coca-Cola company about the document. They told her she would receive a phone call within 10 days; but the phone never rang. Coke’s inhouse historian (who knew that job

The story goes: The secret recipe was originally written down in 1919, the year that the Woodruff family bought Coca-Cola for a mere $25 Million dollars from Asa Candler. Not having enough money to pay up front, they convinced Candler to write down the recipe to help secure a bank loan. That piece of paper is said to have been kept in the same safe for 90 years, until it was moved in 2011 to a different safe at the company’s World of Coke attraction. This is why Ted Ryan is so confident the Kluge’s are wrong. He say’s it’s “the best kept trade secret in American Commerce” The Kluge’s disagree, though. And now their letting the secret out; but not without profit. The supposed document is for sale on eBay for no less than $5 million dollars. There’s always the fancy “Buy it Now” option for $15 Million, too. Unfortunately for the Georgian family, there have been no bids thus far. The recipe probably won’t sell, not at this price at least. But the Kluge family may or may not have one of the most mysterious and successful beverage recipe’s in the history of mankind. Ted Ryan says they don’t. At this point it’s really just a matter of opinion. Either way, one thing is certain - nobody cares nearly as much about the Pepsi recipe.

even existed, huh?) Ted Ryan says that he understand why the company never placed the call. He says it’s impossible. He’s quoted, saying “I will go to sleep soundly tonight, knowing that the only copy of the secret formula is safe and locked away”.

package may say in big bright letters “Whole Grain,” but the ingredients show the whole grain as second or third on the list. Ingredients are listed by weight, with the most abundant by weight listed first, so there may be less whole grain than what one might think. However, the claim is not a lie. The package itself says, in fine print, “made with.”

any shoppers carefully select healthy and nutritious foods for themselves and their families. And yet, even the most conscientious shoppers might be fooled by fancy food labels that cleverly make consumers think they are getting something better than they are. Some tricks have been around for a long time. Here are some described in the April 2011 issue of Nutrition Action HealthLetter: Fruit Drinks: Fruit drinks labeled with “100 percent vitamin C” may have plenty of vitamin C, but what else? If a juice is fruit-flavored sugar water or just a little fruit juice, it is missing many bonuses of 100-percent fruit juice. Orange juice, for example, has vitamin C, as well as calcium, iron, phosphorus, magnesium and zinc.

Real Fruit: “Made with real fruit” is a claim made in cereals and other breakfast foods. Looking at the ingredient list can reveal that there is fruit in the product, but it may be listed fifth or sixth -not as much as the shopper might hope. A better choice might be to select the whole-grain cereal or pancake and top it with fresh, frozen or canned fruit. Omega-3 Fatty Acids: These are ones that can help lower the risk of heart disease -- but not all omega-3’s are created equal. EPA and DHA are the two omega-3 fats that research indicates play the biggest part in heart health. ALA, a third kind of omega-3 fat, is the one most often added to foods and touted on the label. Choose to eat fatty fish to get their EPA and DHA. To make the best choices, consumers must read food packages carefully and look at the ingredient lists. Select a time to shop when you have time to read and compare brands. Once you’ve read the labels and selected your favorite products, your shopping time will be cut in half because you can select the same brands over and over again.

Whole Grains: Marketers know that health-conscious consumers are looking for whole grains. At a glance, the

This recipe for Spanish-Style Cod with Tomatoes adds a hint of spice and Spanish flair by using fully cooked, Spanishstyle chorizo, a pork sausage seasoned with smoked paprika and chili, not the soft, Mexican type. Cod that has been sustainably fished -- U.S. Pacific cod or Atlantic cod from Iceland and the northeast Arctic -- is the best to use for this dish, so read the label! Pacific cod, which is nearly an identical stand-in or Pacific ling or Alaskan pollack may be used as a substitute. (Additional information provided by Janet Hackert, Nutrition and Health Education Specialist, Harrison County, University of Missouri Extension.)

SPANISH-STYLE COD WITH TOMATOES 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 medium onion, finely chopped 4 ounces Spanish chorizo or kielbasa, diced 1 tablespoon poultry seasoning, divided 1 teaspoon salt, divided 1 teaspoon black pepper, divided 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper 1 (15-ounce) can fire-roasted tomatoes with peppers 1/2 cup chicken stock, divided 1 (15-ounce) can great northern beans or cannellini beans, rinsed 1 1/4 pounds Pacific cod or Atlantic cod, Pacific ling or Alaskan pollack, cut into 4 pieces 1 teaspoon Spanish paprika Cooking oil spray 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice

1. Preheat oven to 425 F. 2. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onion, chorizo (or kielbasa), 1/2 tablespoon poultry seasoning, 1/2 teaspoon salt and pepper, and the red pepper flakes. Cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 2 minutes. 3. Add the tomatoes with peppers and 1/4 cup broth. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the broth is almost evaporated, 2 to 4 minutes. Stir in beans. Remove from heat. 4. Sprinkle fish on both sides with remaining oil, poultry seasoning, salt, pepper and paprika. Coat a 9-by-13inch baking dish with cooking spray. Place fish in prepared baking dish. 5. Top each piece of fish with equal amounts of the tomato mixture (about 1/2 cup per fillet). Pour the remaining 1/4 cup broth into the pan and cover the pan with foil. Bake until the fish is just cooked through, 15 to 20 minutes. Serve fish with the sauce spooned over the top. Sprinkle with lemon juice.

Their love is forbidden, and somehow the fate of the world gets caught up in it. “Beautiful Creatures” stands out among the pack because the young lovers have actual chemistry, not just vacant stares. The pacing is a little sluggish. The movie’s mythology keeps changing, and new arbitrary plot twists spring up like dandelions. As far as young-adult supernatural love stories go, you could do a lot worse. “The Last Stand” (R) -- Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a rickety old sheriff who can still dole out master-level violence when the time is right. When a devious drug lord stages a spectacular escape from prison, he and his army of thugs make a run for the border. The last stop before Mexico is Somerton, Ariz. -- a peaceful small town under the protection of the aging lawman. It’s up to Ah-nuld and his ragtag bunch of townsfolk to shoot them bad guys. Arnold holds up to the ravages of time pretty well. He’s (relatively) believable as a

police veteran seeking some peace. But this movie is mostly about fighting, and that’s all good here. Johnny Knoxville (of MTV’s “Jackass”) plays a shifty gun nut with an arsenal -- thus supplying the firepower for the big scenes. “Stand Up Guys” (R) -- Val (Al Pacino) is released from a 28-year stay in prison, and meets up with his old partners in crime, Doc (Christopher Walken) and Hirsch (Alan Arkin). These three old-timers immediately start riffing. Ignore some plot holes and get over a few pacing issues, because the veteran cast is the real draw here -- and they deliver laughs to those who are observant. Walken especially. His dead-pan is impeccable, and as a former mafia man gone soft with age, he gets some of the best lines in the movie. “Side Effects” (R) -- Emily (Rooney Mara) has a nice apartment and a man with A-list looks (Channing Tatum), but she just can’t feel OK. Her psychiatrist (Jude Law) gives

16

her Ablixa, an anxiety medication that he’s getting paid to prescribe. At first, it’s all great and dandy. Things get real dark though, and the opening scene of the movie suggests that there’s murder on the way. This is a tight and twisting thriller. Well worth a rental if you can handle a dose of Hitchcock-style mind games.

• It was French Enlightenment author Voltaire who made the following sage observation: “Judge a man by his questions rather than his answers.” • If you’re like the average American, you laugh 15 times every day. • Have you ever heard of an artist by the name of John Banvard? You’re to be forgiven if the name is unfamiliar; few people these days remember him. In the mid19th century, though, he was something of a phenomenon. In 1840, the then-25year-old man set off on a skiff down the Mississippi River. He spent more than a year on the river, sketching steadily along the way. After he completed the voyage, he spent another five years painting his “Panorama of the Mississippi,” an ambitious work that was 12 feet wide and more than 3 miles long. When completed,

• In the 1960s, the miniskirt was still controversial. Both the Vatican City and Disneyland refused entrance to women wearing the short skirts. • If you’re a fan of the TV series “Dr. Who,” you probably know that the title character, a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey, has two hearts. This may seem like science fiction (and, of course, it is), but it’s not unknown for a human to be born with two hearts. One such example was Giuseppe de Mai, born in Italy in the 19th century. The condition is rare, though; so rare, in fact, that the London Academy of Medicine offered de Mai $15,000 under the condition that it receive his body after his death. Clearly, if a seller could sell his existing business to the buyer at a good price, and then immediately set up a new business in competition with that existing business, the buyer will have lost the benefit of his or her bargain with the seller. The Colorado legislature, when it enacted the statute making most non-competes unenforceable, recognized that not permitting non-competes in this type of situation would not only be most unfair to buyers, but would also virtually eliminate the market for the sale of existing businesses.
