“Probably the reason we all go so haywire at Christmastime with the endless unrestrained and often silly buying of gifts is that we don’t quite know how to put our love into words.” – Harlan Miller, writer

Making a list isn’t just for Santa Claus. It’s a great way to stay focused when you’re out shopping, especially if you plan to hit up any big sale days. Some of the deals are very enticing but if you don’t have a plan of who you’re buying for and how much you can afford to spend, you might end up walking away having spent more for gifts that you can’t necessarily use.
SAVE TIME, BUY ONLINE This option is becoming more and more viable as people learn how frustrating it can be to fight through those holiday crowds at the mall or your favorite retail store. Instead, stay warm and cozy in your pajamas and buy things online when feasible. Many retailers offer free shipping if you purchase a certain amount from them and they can often ship directly to the person you’re buying it for. The exception of course, is when buying from local merchants. You can avoid the large retail stores, and get that personal touch we remember from days gone by. Still warm, still cozy!
FIND GOOD DEALS BEFORE LEAVING HOME Use the internet to find the deals you can truly take advantage of before you go shopping. Not only can you save yourself a sizeable chunk of change by getting a great deal, but you can save yourself a lot of time, energy and gas if you only have to make one stop to get that perfect gift.
Online shopping can be especially tricky, though. This is the most common place for identity theft to occur. To ensure your online shopping safety, there are a few things to keep in mind: 1. If the deal sounds too good to be true, it very likely is. Unless you’ve
WHEN IN DOUBT, BUY A GIFT CARD There’s always that one person that you just can’t figure out what to get. Either they have everything they could possibly want or they are so particular, you know you’ll never get the right present . . . ever. Sometimes it’s better just to get them a gift card. That way, they can go get what they want and you don’t have to stress about whether or not they’ve already got what you planned to buy.
SIGN UP FOR EMAILS Large and small retailers alike will often provide great discounts through coupons. If possible, sign up for their emailing list so they can send you deals Shop Safely This Holiday Season... Continued on Page 3

3. If you’re wary of shopping online, buy a prepaid card to use instead of your personal credit or debit card. These cards allow you the same freedom to shop online but aren’t connected in any way to your bank or credit card account and add a great layer of protection when making online purchases.
We specialize in helping you translate your personal style into your unique design style.

2. Check to make sure the website offers a safe buy guarantee. Lots of online retailers will allow you to pay with a PayPal account or an online purchasing protection system. These systems guarantee that they won’t share your personal information (including your credit card number) and allow you to dispute any purchase that wasn’t satisfactory.

and discounts you can use to save big at the register.
DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK Sometimes retailers will program their registers to discount an item the night before the advertised discount day. If you shop after 6:00 p.m. the night before, you might just get lucky on this one. Don’t be too shy to ask about upcoming discounts either. Some stores will let you know ahead of time what their deals will be so you can plan ahead to get there in time. Shopping local retail stores rather than larger retail chains is a great way to take advantage of discounts that aren’t too widely known. Sometimes all you have to do is ask. Maybe the store offers a discount to senior citizens but doesn’t advertise that they do. Sometimes you can even get a small discount off a great item by asking the sales associate if there’s “anything they can do to work with you on the price.” Haggling is popular in many countries around the world and while most Americans don’t engage in that practice, plenty of retailers are willing to offer you a little something back for shopping locally.
PAY WITH CASH As arcane as this practice may seem, it’s a great way to protect your personal information and stick to a budget. It’s pretty hard to break your budget if you only have a certain amount of money in your wallet. Some retailers, especially local ones, offer discounts for people who pay with cash because they don’t have to pay the merchant fees required on a credit or debit card transaction.
STRESS-SHOPPING IS A BIG NO-NO It’s been shown that stress affects our rational approach to spending and makes us more likely to spend our money recklessly. It can trick us into thinking that saving a little money on one item means we can spend more money on another unnecessary item. That money didn’t magically appear in your bank account so if you didn’t budget for it and don’t truly need it, don’t buy it.
It’s That Time...

It may be tempting to guess what your friends and family may want this year, but it’s much easier to do some subtle recognizance to find out at what stores they personally like to shop. If you know they like a certain local home goods store, go there with them in mind and you’ll probably have more success than digging through a huge superstore’s selection of home goods items.

for forcing bulbs. These hold the bulbs and allow the roots to be seen reaching for the water while keeping your bulbs dry so they don’t rot. They are beautiful as well as a great science lesson.
FORCING BULBS
H
ow to force bulbs to do your laundry. Yeah! That would be something wouldn’t it? No we’re just going to force them to grace our homes with their beautiful blooms and fragrance. That’s nice too. You can force any kind of bulb but forcing Paperwhites is by far the simplest. Paperwhites don’t require a cooling period. If you decide to force other bulbs like Hyacinth, Crocus or Tulips they need to be chilled for a time specific to each plant which is usually between six and eight weeks. You can adjust the times for the kind of bulbs you are forcing and then follow the same instructions on how to force Paperwhites. They make some beautiful “forcing vases” specifically designed

You can also use any container that doesn’t have a hole in the bottom. I’ve found some really cute squatty containers at the dollar store before. Next you can fill the container part way with either pebbles or potting soil and set the bulbs in pointed side up. Don’t let your bulbs sit in water or they will rot! Let the water be available right under the bulb so the roots will grow into it. Place your bulbs in a cool place for the first couple of weeks and once the shoots are two to three inches tall you can move them to a brighter and warmer area. This will prevent them from becoming leggy and droopy. Shortly after that, another two to three weeks, and your house will be graced by the presence of those tiny beautiful white flowers and the strong love it or hate it aroma that accompanies them. It’s really such an easy way to bring color into the house or a great gift to give others a little color in their homes! Start new bulbs every two weeks for a continuous color show. Happy holidays everyone!

reduction in the interior of a carotid artery as a criterion of stroke risk. With a 60 percent to 70 percent or greater narrowing of the carotid artery, people benefit from the opening up of the artery, using a variety of procedures. Some experts feel that a 60 percent narrowing requires only bloodthinning medication, such as aspirin. Others feel that surgical removal of the blockage is indicated.

DETERMINING RISK OF A STROKE
The booklet on stroke gives timely information on this dreaded cause of death and disability. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 902W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I would like to know the risk of having a stroke when a carotid artery has a blockage. I was told that doctors don’t go by percentage of blockage now. How is the risk determined? -- K.C.
*** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am an 85-yearold female, and my doctor has suggested a colonoscopy. I find it a degrading test. The doctor didn’t say why I needed it. Should a woman my age have it? -- K.C.
ANSWER: An obstruction in the carotid artery, the neck artery that supplies the brain with blood, is not the only cause of a stroke. A piece of a blood clot that has broken off of a main clot elsewhere in the body and been swept into a brain artery is another cause of stroke. I mention this to keep it clear that a blocked carotid is but one risk for a stroke.

have been normal. No one I know recommends screening at 85. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a World War II vet. I told the Department of Veterans Affairs doctor that I have nervous feet. If I sit in a chair with my feet on a footstool, they always start moving. The same thing happens at night in bed. I can’t get to sleep. Can you tell me what this is? -- F.B. ANSWER: It sounds like a form of myoclonus -- brief, involuntary movements of the feet and legs. Most often it happens when in bed, but it also can happen when sitting in a chair. Something in the nervous system has gone wrong. Mirapex and Requip are two medicines used to quiet these movements.
See if the VA doctor agrees. It’s not such an uncommon disorder as you might think. It’s often seen with another condition called restless leg syndrome, a funny feeling in the legs that makes a person get up and move around to get rid of the sensation.
*** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. The Gettysburg Address became one of the most famous speeches in American history. • On Nov. 21, 1927, Time magazine puts the week-old Holland Tunnel on its cover. The tunnel, which runs under the Hudson River between New York City and Jersey City, N.J., requires 84 ventilating fans that replace all the air in the tunnel every 90 seconds. • On Nov. 23, 1936, legendary Mississippi Delta bluesman Robert Johnson is recorded for the very first time in a San Antonio recording studio. He spent only five days in the studio, recording 41 total takes of 29 different songs. Almost immediately, Johnson’s recordings gained a cult following among blues collectors. • On Nov. 24, 1947, the House of Representatives votes to approve citations of contempt against 10 Hollywood writers,
directors and producers. These men had refused to cooperate at hearings dealing with communism in the movie industry. Hollywood quickly established the so-called blacklist, and those on the list rarely found work in the movies.

Nick-Snips
THE UNLIKELY CANDIDATES By Nick Yanez
I
n mankind’s exceptional history, there have been some classic rivalries between people who would, at first sight, appear to be allies. In a fictional world, superheroes like Batman and Superman simply don’t get along; yet both supposedly stand for the same form of justice and integrity. What gives? Sometimes, two close entities are forced to become rivals, as nothing more than victims of circumstance. This is much more understandable. For example, when brothers’ John and Jim Harbaugh were opponents at last years Super Bowl, it had more to with chance and luck than anything else. This kind of unlikely competition is usually healthy. Which brings us to Waterville, Maine. A couple of weeks ago, towns and cities all over America voted on issues facing their communities. While not nearly the spectacle of presidential elections, local elections are important to take part in. It does after all, directly affect the locals. Often times in such small elections, blank spots are found on the ballot. Such was the case in the small town of Waterville. There was no one willing to run for Warden. Good thing there happened to be two brave citizens willing to stand up for what they believe in. One a democrat, the other a republican. Nothing too unusual, right? Other than the fact that the two candidates were husband and wife. “It really started as this kind of ha-ha thing between the two of us, and then the local reporter commented it, and
then it got picked up,” Jennifer Johnson said in a statement to TODAY.com. It was never meant to be any huge deal, she says, “It started out as kind of a joke”. But serious it was – when no one else in the community stood a chance. In fact both Jessica and her husband Dave were the only members of their ward to show up at the caucus. So they ran; pulling out literally none of the stops. They didn’t even run smear campaigns against one another, despite having every ounce of dirt on the opposing candidate! No, instead, Jessica and Dave Johnson did the unthinkable. They allowed the voters to decide who they thought would make a better Warden for the community. Imagine that. As it turned out, Jessica won the battle by a final tally of 127-76 votes. She now has the imperative responsibility to assist poll workers on Election Day. She also must work a minimum of one, and maximum of two, days a year! Talk about a commitment to serve. As worthless as it all seems, Jennifer had some sound advice in her neverending TODAY.com quote, “Whether you’re talking about a Republican or Democrat, it shouldn’t be hard to listen and say I don’t agree with what you’re saying, but I don’t think you’re coming from a place of stupidity or hatred”. She finished with a nice antidote, “Nobody is all bad or all good”. True that, Jessica Johnson. However this news story is perhaps the most dreadful of the year. This was reported on major networks! ‘Then why are you reporting it in Nick Snips?’ you ask. Well, you didn’t know just how dreadful a story it was until now. And as the people of Waterville, Maine could surely tell you – you have to stay informed folks.

ith only a few weeks to go during this annual signup period, there are several reasons many seniors aren’t making changes to their Medicare health plans. Only 15 percent of us made changes last year or plan to make changes in the future. According to a news release by Allsup, here is the biggest reason seniors don’t make the changes: The process of making plan changes can be complex. Comparing the plans and making choices can be complicated. However, by not taking the time to compare plans, seniors can miss out on benefits and savings. Medicare plans can change, both in cost and what they cover. Seniors can find themselves unexpectedly paying more in co-pays or deductibles, or dis-
• Your health has changed, especially if it requires new prescription drugs or visits to a specialist. • You move to another location, away from your plan’s service area. • Your local provider changes, for example, if your physician retires or a facility changes. • A drug you need is no longer on the list for your current plan due to changes in drug coverage. There are a few ways to get help with selecting your plan. Allsup [Medicare. Allsup.com] is a fee-based service that can help. Since the oven often is needed for side dishes, the big bird may have to take an alternate route to the table, according to Dr. Pam Duitsman, nutrition and health education specialist with University of Missouri Extension. “No matter what route you chose, always ensure whole turkeys reach 165 degrees F as measured in the innermost part of the thigh and wing and the thickest part of the breast,” said Duitsman. Here are some things to keep in mind with various turkey cooking methods: Electric Roaster Oven: Use on the countertop as an “extra oven” for a whole turkey. The cooking time and oven temperature should be identical to a conventional oven. Preheat to at least 325 F, and place the turkey on a meat rack. Keep the lid on throughout cooking. Cooking bags may be used, as long as the bag does not touch the oven surface on any side. Grilling: This popular method allows a completely thawed bird to cook over indirect heat in an outdoor gas or charcoal grill. Keep the grill covered, and place a pan of water beneath the grilling surface to catch drippings. Do not stuff the turkey -- the indirect heat might not allow the stuffing to get hot enough to kill bacteria. Smoking: Smokers vary widely, and use either electricity, gas or charcoal for heat. Ensure the smoker reaches an internal temperature of 225 F to 300 F before introducing the completely thawed, unstuffed turkey. If using watersoaked wood, do not use softwood like pine, fir, cedar or spruce. These woods will give the food a turpentine flavor and coat the meat with black pitch.
12 pounds or less can be successfully cooked in a short amount of time. Follow manufacturer directions, and ensure the oil covers the turkey by 1-2 inches. Select a safe location for your fryer, and heat oil to 350 F. Slowly and carefully lower the turkey in the hot oil. Monitor the temperature, and never leave unattended. Pressure Cooker: Use turkey parts such as breasts, legs and thighs. Follow the manufacturer instructions for a quick-cooking (about 1/3 or less of conventional time) product. Slow-Cooker: Use cut-up parts of the turkey like legs, thighs, breasts, wings or quarters. Begin heating on “High” for an hour or more before turning to “Low” (or, just continue cooking on “High”). A minimum heating temperature between 170 F and 200 F should be maintained. Do not remove the cover while cooking. Microwaving: This can work successfully with either a whole unstuffed turkey, or using parts of the turkey in a covered dish. Limit the size of your bird to around 12-14 pounds, and allow 3 inches oven clearance on top and 2-3 inches of space around the bird. Because microwaves can heat unevenly, a cooking bag will aid heat distribution. Conventional Oven: If you decide to go with your regular conventional oven, set your oven temperature no lower than 325 F. Place your turkey on a rack in a shallow roasting pan. For food safety, it’s best to cook stuffing outside of the cavity -- in a casserole dish. Cook the turkey immediately and use a food thermometer to check that the center of the stuffing and the internal meat have both reached 165 F. More questions? If you have more questions about cooking a turkey call the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-888-674-6854, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. ET on Thanksgiving Day. HOLIDAY SIDE DISHES PLAY A STARRING ROLE
T
raditionally, the centerpiece of the Thanksgiving holiday table is the presentation and carving of the bird. While I enjoy the beautiful distribution of the crispy skin and white or dark meat, why can’t the side dishes play a starring role, too? If your family or invited guests are vegetarians, these sensational side dishes serve a dual purpose. They’re tasty, unusual and hearty, and showcase the bounty of fall vegetables beautifully. Here are the recipes for some creative dishes that you can enjoy all year long or serve as a holiday dish or as an entree for vegetarian guests.

BUTTERNUT SQUASH AND RICE PILAF This is a variation of a traditional Greek rice pilaf dish that uses pumpkin and a short-grained, polished rice that’s grown in the Macedonia region of northern Greece. It’s often difficult to find in the U.S. My variation uses Butternut squash and instant brown rice to add color and nutrients to this festive fall pilaf. 2 pounds butternut squash, peeled, halved and seeded 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 large red onion, finely chopped 1 clove garlic, minced 2 tablespoons water 1 tablespoon tomato paste 1 cup instant or parboiled brown rice 2 cups water, or 1 (14-ounce) can vegetable broth plus 1/2 cup water 1/2 cup chopped dill or basil 3 teaspoons chopped fresh oregano or 1

1. Grate the squash through the large holes of a box grater. Heat oil in a large cast-iron or nonstick skillet over medium-low heat. Add onion and garlic, and cook, stirring, until soft and lightly colored, 10 to 12 minutes. Combine 2 tablespoons water and tomato paste in a small bowl and stir it into the pan. Add rice and stir to coat. Add the squash, in batches if necessary, and stir until it has reduced in volume enough so that you can cover the pan. 2. Increase the heat to medium-high, pour in 2 cups water (or if using broth, 1 3/4 cups plus 1/4 cup water), cover and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium-low and cook, covered, stirring once or twice, until the rice has absorbed most of the liquid and squash is tender, 25 to 30 minutes. 3. Add basil or parsley, oregano, salt, pepper and cinnamon; gently stir to combine. Remove from heat and let stand, covered, for 5 minutes. Serve hot or at room temperature. Makes 8 servings, about 3/4 cup each.
CUSTOM BAKED SWEET POTATOES I’ve listed a variety of flavorful additions that you and your guests can stirin or use as toppings for your sweet potatoes. Select sweet potatoes that are a uniform size so that they cook evenly. You can set up your stir-in/toppings in small bowls surrounding a tray of baked sweet potatoes. All the flavors work together if you like to pile it on, or any one can be used alone. You also can add chopped, cooked vegetables to the toppers list to turn the sweet potato into an entree for vegetarian guests. 8 to 12 medium-sized sweet potatoes Stir-ins and/or Toppers (see below) 1. Preheat oven to 400 F. 2. Scrub the potatoes under water and dry them off. Spray or rub them with oil. 3. Use a metal fork to poke a few holes in each potato. • It was the ever-proper Emily Post who made the following sage observation: “Manners are a sensitive awareness of the feelings of others. If you have that awareness, you have good manners, no matter what fork you use.” • During the Dark Ages in Europe, it was a common belief that the soul of the first person to be buried in a new graveyard would belong to the devil. • If you’re planning a trip to Washington state anytime soon, you might want to head to Olympic National Park and take the Spruce Railroad Trail up to Lake Crescent, a 600-foot deep mountain lake. It has a rather spooky history, with Bigfoot sightings and numerous accounts of ghosts and inexplicable sounds in the nearby woods. The native Kallam Indi-
ans refused to fish in the lake for fear of stirring up the evil spirits that resided there. Lake Crescent also is the setting for the Lady of the Lake. It seems that in 1940, two local fishermen (not afraid of evil spirits, it seems) found a body there. It turned out to be the remains of one Hallie Illingworth, a waitress who had disappeared in 1937. Her husband had murdered her, weighted her body down and disposed of it in the depths of the lake. But it was those very depths -- or, more accurately, the cold water in those depths -- that preserved the body almost perfectly and made identification possible three years after her death. • Those who study such things say that 40 percent of all modern Chinese people are descended from just three men (dubbed “super-grandfathers”) during the Neolithic period. *** Thought for the Day: “In the United States there is more space where nobody is than where anybody is. THIEVES TARGET HOLIDAY SHOPPERS
M
any shoppers will find themselves spending time alone in parking lots and garages this holiday season. It’s also the season when thieves tend to become more active, targeting shoppers who are carrying more cash and presents. “We want to believe the holidays are filled with kindness, peace and joy, but there are people out there haunting parking lots in hopes of taking advantage of the season,” said Mark Desrochers of The Hanover Insurance Group. “A car break-in can be traumatic and leave you feeling vulnerable, and also bring with it car repair and replacement costs.”
conceal. If possible, leave them at home -or at least hide them out of sight. If you accumulate shopping bags during the trip, lock them in the trunk. • Lock up -- All doors should be locked and all windows should be shut tight. Don’t forget to lock the trunk if it doesn’t lock automatically when you lock your doors. When returning to your vehicle, lock your doors immediately upon entering.
To be safer in parking lots and garages during the holidays and year-round, here are some recommendations:
• Use Alarms -- Set your car alarm before leaving your vehicle. If you don’t have one, consider having one installed. Alarm stickers and decals are great visible deterrents. Others include steering-wheel locks and brake-pedal locks. Even carrying simple items like a whistle can be helpful to draw attention and ward off thieves.
• Choose Your Spot Carefully -- Do not park close to bushes, trees, walls, large vehicles or any other obstruction that could provide a cover for criminals. At night, park in well-lighted areas, ideally where others are coming and going.
• Be Alert -- Always be aware of your surroundings when parking and returning to your vehicle. Keep your keys in hand so you can enter your vehicle quickly. Check your back seat before entering your vehicle to be sure no one is hiding inside.
• Keep Valuables Out of Sight -- Hide or remove anything valuable from the vehicle. Tablets, laptops, smart phones and navigational systems are popular targets for car burglars. They are easy to steal and

REALISTIC COUPONING
A
television series followed shoppers to see how they saved huge amounts of money at the grocery store by using coupons. In many cases, shoppers were able to get hundreds of dollars in items for only a few cents. However, if you looked carefully at the cart, they were often walking out with dozens of the same product. Yes, it was technically a savings if, for example, they were able to get 20 bottles of shampoo for a dime each, or less. On the practical side, if that’s done with multiple items, storage becomes a problem. If it’s a food item, expiration dates come into play. The trick to couponing is to stay realistic. At least in the beginning, you’ll want to concentrate on items that your family actually uses. Yes, there are many items you can acquire cheaply that you can use for barter, but unless you have time to set up a network of friends and family to swap with, stick to what your family needs right now. If you have a computer, generate a
throwaway email account that you don’t use for anything personal and sign up on a few coupon websites. Be prepared for a blast of junk email, but that’s the point of having a throwaway name. Time can be of the essence with these online coupon sites. Delay by a day and you could be out of luck in the manufacturer has set a limit on how many can be printed. Find out when each site uploads its new coupons, and be among the first to the site to see if there’s anything you need. Get the Sunday paper and go through all the coupons. On Wednesday, when grocery stores often have sales on some of those very items, make your purchases. You save even more by using the coupons. While you’re in the checkout line, flip through a few magazines to see if there are any manufacturer coupons worth having. Once you get out of the store, look at the back of your receipt to see if it contains any coupons.

If you don’t mind giving out your personal information (misspell your name and don’t give your street address), sign up for the store’s frequent shopper card, and use your throwaway email address. While you’re there, ask whether they accept coupons that have been printed off the Internet. Some stores don’t. And check the junk mail at home. Best bet for successful couponing: Start small.
