“If it’s a penny for your thoughts and you put in your two cents worth, then someone, somewhere is making a penny.” – Steven Wright, comedian It used to be that you could go to the grocery store and get a piece of gum from the gumball machine for one penny. You could ride the mechanical horse for a penny there, too. “See a penny, pick it up. All day long you’ll have good luck,” was a phrase that you sang to yourself as you bent down to retrieve a dirty penny from the street as you were crossing. You held tight and made a wish on a penny before throwing it into a fountain. Yes, pennies used to be worth much more than they are now. Today’s youth probably don’t understand the simple joy of finding a penny on the sidewalk. How many would

make your vision a reality... 15706 Jackson Creek Parkway, Monument • 719.488.2544 • www.trilakesprinting.com and British pennies are worth one hundredth of a pound and are made of copper-plated silver. Throughout Europe, the word “penny” can be found in various forms such as the German “pfennig” and the Swedish “penning.” Those terms referred to any sort of coin or money.

even take the time to look up from their cellphones to notice a penny waiting to be plucked from the asphalt in a parking lot? Not many. But Snippetz knows better and so we decided to try to ascertain the true worth of the penny.
When the penny was first produced in the United States, it was about twice the size of today’s pennies (which have remained the same size since 1857), and was officially called the “one-cent piece.” These coins are only still called pennies because old habits die hard and Americans couldn’t shake the tendency to call them as such. They were originally made of 100 percent copper. Back then, Paul Revere actually supplied most of the copper for the onecent coins minted in the early 1790s. Since then, the copper content of pennies has declined steadily over the years as the price of copper has gone up. Pennies haven’t been made of pure copper since 1864. Currently, copper only makes up about 2.5 percent of all the one-cent coins minted since 1982.
HISTORY OF THE PENNY The penny was first introduced as a form of currency in the United States in 1787. It was known as the Fugio cent and rumor has it that Benjamin Franklin designed it. On one side, the image of a sun and sundial with the words “Mind Your Business.” The opposite side featured a chain with 13 links, representing the 13 original colonies, coiled around the words “We Are One.” Pennies aren’t a concept that came to fruition here in the New World first, though. Offa, an Anglo-Saxon king is thought to have introduced the first penny in England around 790 A.D. Back then, the coin was made of solid silver. The term “penny” stuck around
They considered making plastic pennies to help further conserve America’s precious resources, but decided against it and created zinc-covered steel version. They were nicknamed “steelies” and were a bit confusing because they looked more like dimes than pennies. They also rusted and deteriorated much more quickly. Following the war, the Mint switched back to the zinc-andcopper ones they had been making previously. The average lifespan of a penny minted in the U.S. is about 25 years. Since they were originally produced, there have been more than 300 billion pennies minted, 150 billion of which are still in circulation today. If you lined up all 150 billion pennies end to end, it would circle the earth 137 times. In today’s world, it actually costs more to make a penny than the penny is worth (about 1.8 cents each). Interestingly enough, it costs about four cents to make a $100 bill. Unless, of course, you have a penny from 1793, of which there are four remaining, each costing an estimated $275,000. Or perhaps
During World War II, as a way to help the war effort, the U.S. Mint recycled old shell casings to make pennies.

to the right of the Lincoln Memorial. Pennies minted from 1918 to 1958 have Brenners initials under Lincoln’s shoulder. Don’t be disappointed if you can’t see them with the naked eye; they initials are so small, most people can’t see them without a magnifying glass.

Abraham Lincoln’s face was first engraved on the penny in 1909, in celebration of the former president’s 100th birthday. It was the first American coin to feature the face of a real person. He is the only president depicted on a coin that faces to the right. Rumors abound about a secret meaning to Lincoln’s orientation on the coin but the truth is that the sculptor of the Lincoln penny, Victor David Brenner said that he created the penny that way because he was working from a photo of Lincoln facing to the right.
• Benjamin Franklin coined (pun intended) the phrase “a penny saved is a penny earned.” Visitors to his grave in Philadelphia traditionally leave pennies behind for good luck.

Born Viktoras Barnauskas, Brenner emigrated to the U.S. from Lithuania in 1890 to escape persecution for his Jewish ancestry. The Lincoln penny minted in 1909 was also the first coin to include the phrase “In God We Trust” on its front. Fifty years later, the Lincoln Memorial was added to the back of the penny by Mint engraver Frank Gasparro and if you look closely, you can see Lincoln’s statue within it. The penny is the only coin to have the face of the same person on both the front and the back because of that statue. A new design for the penny was released in 2010, which has the Union Shield on the back in place of the Lincoln Memorial. But for those minted prior to that year, you can see the initials of the sculptors who designed them. From 1959 to 2010, Gasparro’s initials can be seen near the shrubbery

PATHWAY PARENTING YOU NEED TO RESPECT ADULTS!
A
s children how often did we hear that? In most homes, children have heard that statement quite a bit. How often do parents, teachers, or authority figures make that statement without really thinking about it first? It is important to teach children respect; that IS how they learn to respect others as they grow up. The best way to begin that process is to teach children to respect themselves. This is where a conflict may occur. When we have true self-respect, we
typically respect others automatically. It usually becomes an unconscious occurrence. Disrespecting of others, in general, usually happens when the person already carries selfdisrespect. So, if parents want their children to be respectful of adults and other children, self-respect must be taught. The best way to teach selfrespect is by demonstration.
teach respect with respect.
This teaches self-disrespect.
Aside from daily respectful interaction with our kids, we also model self-respect when we talk about ourselves too. Think about if you ever put yourself down in front of your children, deny your passion, worry, or self-judge in other ways. I’ve heard mothers call themselves stupid, fat, and incapable among other things. When this occurs, the child can begin inheriting the same language, attitude, and self-perception.
If you want your children to respect other people, regardless of title, gender, appearance, job, or socioeconomic status, then demonstrate it through actions, words, interactions, and self-interactions. It’s that simple. For additional information, please contact: Tami Urbanek of Empowerment Through Healing 719•488•2290

Kids act out for a variety of reasons. Most adults reading this article can remember a time when they acted out or broke the rules while growing up. It happens and many times can be a form of testing from child to parent. When consequences need to be delivered to teach respect, boundaries, and safety are they delivered with respect for the child as individual? When words are spoken, are they spoken with respect even if the child or teenager is not reciprocating? As a parent, are you reactive or proactive in your responses? We

THE FASCINATING WORLD OF SENIORS

t’s not only here in the U.S. -- seniors around the globe are being studied by researchers. We must be fascinating! Amsterdam: Researchers studied whether interventions after discharge from the hospital could keep chronically ill patients from being readmitted in the short, intermediate and long term. They looked at studies from 1980 to 2013, so they had plenty of information. Results: Intermediate- and long-term readmissions saw a reduction with general transitional care, but short-term readmissions were reduced only with high-intensity interventions. Those include a home visit within three days after discharge, plus care coordination by a nurse. Europe: Researchers discovered that those over age 70 who assessed themselves as having ill health did so more in countries that assigned a lower “val-

ow that you have discovered and refined your purpose for living it is time to prepare for action. This is an important step. Do not deceive yourself that just because you have defined your purpose for living that everything from now on will be downhill. After exploring a variety of jobs and professions over several years, our son decided he was supposed to be a pharmacist. So, at 50-years of age he applied to Creighton University School of Pharmacy and was accepted. Do you think his life has been easier for him since he enrolled? Not at all, just the opposite. His wife and child have had to make a variety of alterations to their lifestyle to accommodate his pursuit of a pharmacy degree. Was it the right decision for him? Yes. Will it be easy? No. It’s good to have someone in the family as smart as my son because his father has done several unwise things over the years. One of my biggest problems has been the tendency to come up with yet another really great idea, something that would be a certain success. Then in my
United Kingdom: It used to be that vitamin D was thought to help prevent cardiovascular disease. Now, after five years of study, researchers say that it won’t prevent heart attack or stroke. They suspect that low vitamin D levels are due to a sedentary lifestyle. More research is needed, they say. Canada: There is no benefit to arthroscopic knee surgery for age-related tears. In mild osteoarthritis, doctors need to weigh the costs versus benefits of surgery, and opt for non-operative interventions first. Taiwan: In a long study of married couples, it was learned that a husband’s health impacts the health of the wife. When a husband’s health declined, the wife’s glucose levels increase. But when a wife’s health declined, the husband’s glucose levels remained the same. Possible reasons: A wife may feel isolated and depressed, and an inadequate diet (from being so busy) can raise the glucose levels -- and the risk of diabetes. Listen: The other side of talk is to listen to the wise advice of trusted counselors. Establish principles: You need to create moral rules or beliefs so you will know intuitively what is right and wrong. Plan: Someone once said, “A goal without a plan is just a wish. Count the real cost: Your plans will include various hard costs. Costs to your family, emotions, health, etc. must also be factored in. Set priorities: When your purpose is clear your priorities will also come into focus. You will know almost intuitively
excitement and rush to bring my great idea to reality I would jump off a cliff and try to build my parachute on the way down. I had no patience to talk or listen to any other person about the veracity of the idea, I was narrow focused, stubborn and sometimes blind to the realities in front of me. Thus, in the dust behind me, are many so-called “great ideas confounded by poor planning, mired by uninformed decision making, and ultimately ruined by ego driven judgments. You do not want that to happen to you. After skipping the planning stage on more than one project, here’s what I know for sure: It is very difficult to jump off a cliff and build a parachute on the way down. That is why I commend to you the necessity that you prepare for action before you jump. To best prepare for action, do the following: Think: Employ your mind to give balance to your emotions. Be rational, look objectively at your calling, evaluate and make rational decisions. Pray: God is alive and interested in your life. More than that, He really cares about you and wants a close relationship with you. Talk: Talk to someone you trust about your goals. When you talk you sort out your thoughts, see your goals and dreams in a new or different way, and discover options you had not thought of previously.
what to discard and what to add, what to ignore and on what to focus. We will deal with each step over the next eight essays..

Individualized treatment for:
I understand that many retirement homes may have this machine. My ultimate wish would be that hotels would all put one in their exercise room! Ten minutes on the machine equals 4 miles of jogging. -- L.J.
DIET CAN CUT RISK OF PROSTATE CANCER DEAR DR. ROACH: Do you believe that lycopene, which is found in certain foods such as cooked tomatoes, can help prevent prostate cancer? -- C.R.O. ANSWER: Lycopene, a vitamin A-like substance found in tomatoes and watermelons, was indeed thought to help prevent prostate cancer. Unfortunately, further studies failed to support this. What has been shown more substantially is that a diet of fresh fruits and vegetables helps reduce risk for and even helps treat prostate (and other) cancer. So it may be that lycopene by itself isn’t enough, but that all the different healthy substances found in fruits and vegetables are. This diet certainly reduces risk of heart disease as well. The booklet on the prostate gland discusses enlargement and cancer. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 1001, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Can. with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: About four years ago I bought a vibration machine. I’m a 64-year-old female with major back issues, but I can exercise on the vibration machine with no problems. In fact, when I went in for my last bone density check, my bone density had increased over 14 percent! My doctor said it was unbelievable.
ANSWER: Vibration machines have been around for years, but the data supporting them is patchy. Some studies have found that they do not improve osteoporosis; others show a slight improvement. Many studies have shown an improvement in low back pain and in strength. The machines are generally safe, but they can cause injuries, especially in the elderly. Although vibration machines can improve fitness, I don’t believe that 10 minutes on an exercise machine gives you all the benefits of 4 miles of jogging. Bone density levels show a lot of variation, so a single large increase doesn’t always mean a sustained gain. I think it’s too early to recommend vibration therapy as a standard treatment for osteoporosis. It may have a role for people who are unable to do other kinds of exercises. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a white patch called vitiligo. My doctor is giving me Protopic, but I do not see much improvement. Can you advise me? I am afraid of this advancing. -- G.L. ANSWER: Vitiligo is a loss of color in the skin. It can affect people of any skin color, and likely is due to the body’s destroying its own cells -- in this case, the cells that make the pigment for the skin. Vitiligo often progresses slowly. Tacrolimus (Protopic) is effective in about 90 percent of people treated for two months, according to one study. Steroid creams and ultraviolet light also are used. It may be worthwhile to look for other autoimmune diseases, such as thyroid disease.
*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2014 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

MOMENTS IN TIME THE HISTORY CHANNEL
• On Oct. 11, 1809, explorer Meriwether Lewis dies under mysterious circumstances at Grinder’s Tavern in Tennessee. Most historians have concluded that Lewis’ death was a suicide brought on by depression over financial worries, but some believe he was murdered, possibly by the tavern owner. • On Oct. 12, 1810, when Bavarian Crown Prince Louis marries, the citizens of Munich are invited to attend the festivities. The decision to repeat the festivities the next year gave rise to the tradition of the annual Oktoberfest. Today, more than 1 million gallons of beer are consumed annually at Oktoberfest. • On Oct. 8, 1869, future auto inventor and mechanic Frank Duryea is born. Duryea was the first automobile driver on the American road. In 1893, his Duryea Motor Wagon made its first successful trip, 600 yards down his street in Springfield, Mass., before the transmission blew.
!
• On Oct. 7, 1913, for the first time, Henry Ford’s entire Michigan automobile factory is run on a continuously moving assembly line. A motor and rope pulled the chassis past workers and parts, cutting the manhours required to complete one “Model Tâ€? from 12-1/2 hours to six. • On Oct. 6, 1926, Yankee slugger Babe Ruth hits a record three homers against the St. Louis Cardinals in the fourth game of the World Series. In 1928, in another Yanks-Cards World Series, Ruth tied his own record, knocking three more pitches out of the same park. • On Oct. 9, 1940, during the Battle of Britain, the German Luftwaffe launches a heavy nighttime raid on London, and a bomb pierces the dome of St. Paul’s Cathedral, destroying the High Altar. The cathedral had been built, destroyed and rebuilt many times over the years beginning in 604 A.D. The current cathedral dates from 1710. • On Oct. 10, 1973, Spiro Agnew becomes the first U.S. vice president to resign in disgrace. He pleaded no contest to a charge of income-tax evasion in exchange for dropping charges of political corruption, which included his practice of accepting bribes even while vice president. c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

Nick Snips THE FALL FEAR CONUNDRUM by Nick Yanez
What are you afraid of? Most people wouldn’t be scared of what you think. Sure skeletons, zombies, and vampires are all perceived as frightening, but we aren’t really afraid of them intruding our lives. The truth is, fear differs for everyone. Some people fear being alone. Many young people fear never accomplishing their dreams. The elderly are scared for future generations, or worry for their own health. Fear is an individual based symptom, usually founded on expectations (i.e. no one expects to get house broken into - therefore we fear it). If we constantly had a read on everything that would transpire before it happened, we wouldn’t be afraid of anything, because we’d understand how to defeat anything negative in our path. Unfortunately, this isn’t a possibility. So why am I writing on such a dark subject in my usually-chipper column? Because, as

you’ve probably heard by now, it’s finally October! With October, I usually instantly think of three things: The heart of autumn, Pumpkin Pie, and Halloween. That’s right, in just a few short weeks toddlers and teens will unite to invade others home’s dressed in costume with the promise of free sugary treats.
Secure your position in the 29th edition today!
The problem is, over the last decade plus, Halloween has become something to fear for many people. It’s not the fake spider webs and chainsaws buzzing around, but rather the anxiety of the unknown. When I was a child, not long ago, I remember loving to trick or treat. My brother and I would invade the richest and most condensed neighborhoods in hopes of capturing the most high quality candy a kid could ever dream of. We usually did pretty well. Every year, before we’d be allowed to eat a piece of candy, we’d have to ask my parents. This wasn’t purely because they were limiting our sugar intake, it was to check that the candy was free of any dangers. Why would anyone intentionally tamper with a child’s tasty treat? Because, America, people be crazy. My parents would check every individual piece of candy to make sure it didn’t look like it was previously opened and no hidden objects were inside. They were looking for poison and blades. Isn’t that insane!? No actually, it was just responsible (if not a little overprotective). You see, if there had been some tampering with our candy, we wouldn’t have been the first kids to ever encounter that. Which is why today, so many parents are afraid of what their kids are receiving out there. Often times, par-

ents will opt for a church or school event, where they are confident the candy being given out is safe and delicious. But there’s more to it than that. Some people get vandalized on Halloween. Some people’s dogs get kidnapped. Some people watch scary movies and wet the bed. Some people go to a party with people they don’t trust. There’s a whole list of bad things that can happen on Halloween night. But I’ve got good (slightly terrifying) news. Bad things can happen to you on any night. It’s not just the 31st of this wonderful month. Any night some teens could be planning to drape your house in toilet paper. Every day some crazy person is scheming to hurt others. Somewhere, someone, wants to steal the nice things that belong to you. But that doesn’t mean you walk through life constantly afraid of these things. You can’t let fear control your life. I think batman said

that… That’s why I wrote this preview to the Halloween season. It’s best if you cautiously enjoy the holiday, with no assumption that something bad will happen. Live your life. Love your nights. Enjoy your holiday. And if you should encounter someone with the intention to harm you and your family, specifically by the means of eating your flesh and initiating a chemical reaction in your bloodstream that changes your DNA makeup – destroy that zombie on site. The last thing we need is a Zombie apocalypse just days before the new season of The Walking Dead.

GARY’S COMPUTER TIPS! HOW TO AVOID ADWARE/ CRAPWARE/HIJACK-WARE Most of these programs come on the back of something you actually wanted to download—usually from a company that’s trying to make money, but offering their software for free. Avoiding crapware is pretty easy once you become familiar with the tricks installers use to get you to agree to them. Here are some things to keep in mind as you download and install new programs: • Always download programs from their “Official” page, if possible. Many download sites (like Download.com) will create their own installers with bundled crapware, even if the original download didn’t have it. • Look for checkboxes on the download page. Sometimes the option to avoid crapware may not be in the installer, but on the download page of the app itself. Adobe, for example, offers you the chance to decline installing McAfee on its download page. Other apps may offer an installer with crapware, but a portable version without it. • “Do Not” click Next over and over

LIVING GOD’S GIFTS bringing Christ into your financial life
• Always select the “Custom Install” option. Never choose Automatic. Custom install with almost always offer you the opportunity to decline crapware.
INVESTING FROM A BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE
• Read every checkbox. Sometimes they’ll hide it on an otherwise unrelated page of the installer. Read every checkbox and uncheck anything that wants you to install something you didn’t ask for. • Don’t Click Every “Agree”. Sometimes, an installer will make the “crapware agreement” look like the original software’s terms of service. Your brain wants to click “Agree” thinking it’s the only way to continue with the installation—but read closely. If the “terms” are for a program other than the one you downloaded, you can safely choose “Decline” and continue the installation. • Watch Out for Multiple Offers. Just because you’ve avoided one piece of crapware doesn’t mean you’re done—there could be more bundled apps waiting for you, or multiple offers for the same toolbar in the same installer! ringing effort. Another $20,000 goes to Tri-Lakes Cares from the Empty Bowls Supper and $5000 to a special dictionary project which provides each 3rd grader in the Tri-Lakes area with a new dictionary. Grants totaling over $100,000 are awarded annually. The source of foundation funds is primarily from Monument Hill Kiwanis through its various fund raising activities. Corporate Sponsorships, direct gifts to the foundation and investment fund appreciation round out the aggregate. The net worth of the foundation presently stands at approximately $300,000. The granting program annually solicits funding requests in May. Information is available at “monumenthillfoundation. org”. The foundation and the Kiwanis Club are sincerely grateful for the support from the Tri-Lakes family. Such support enables the foundation and the club to help community charitable programs and help area youth in their efforts to become productive citizens.
