or those of you who may not have heard of William James Sidis, to say he was smart is an extreme understatement. As a child prodigy living in the early 1900s, Sidis proved to be an exceptional boy and caught the attention of the national media. But as he soon learned, his abilities and the subsequent notoriety it earned him wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. In fact, there is a fair amount of skepticism about just how much of a genius Sidis really was. To truly understand what made William James Sidis tick, it’s important to know more about his life. So Snippetz decided to take a trip into the past to learn more about the boy genius who may have been the smartest man ever to walk our fair planet.

William James Sidis... Continued from Page 1
REALLY EARLY LIFE
William James Sidis was born on April 1, 1898, which you may recall is also April Fools’ Day. His parents were Ukrainian immigrants who fled their own country to escape political and religious persecution. Boris Sidis was a psychologist who became known for his work with hypnosis and his interest in studying mental disorders. Sarah Sidis was equally smart, earning herself a medical degree and the distinction of being one of the only women of her time to do so.
Whether or not the couple’s intense desire to create a genius is what ultimately led to William’s intellectual success (it’s the age old “nature versus nurture” debate), their son did develop into an incredibly intelligent and exceptional child. By six months old, William was uttering his first words, like “door” and “moon.” Boris and Sarah claimed that he was able to feed himself from a spoon at eight months old, something that takes some children a couple years to master.
After the couple welcomed their son into the world, it became clear that they intended to use their obvious intelligence to mold their child into their ideal progeny. Young William couldn’t just be a smart boy; he needed to be a genius.
By the time William had his first birthday, he was learning how to recognize letters and spell out words. At 18 months old, he was reading the daily newspaper. William’s obvious genius became a sensational story for the media. They wrote about how, as a mere boy of two, he was using the typewriter at his highchair, writing letters (in both English and French), including one that he addressed to the department store Macy’s to ask about toys.
Creating a genius takes a lot of work so Sarah Sidis quit practicing medicine to focus her attentions on William. She and Boris used their life savings to buy books, supplies and anything else they felt would encourage the intellect of their baby. Boris, having a working knowledge of hypnosis used similar

NOT AS EARLY LIFE
When he entered grade school at six years old, he was already working to master seven different languages (French, Latin, German, Hebrew, Greek, Russian and one of his own creation called Vendergood). By the age of seven, William had already worked up to a high school curriculum. Of course, the New York Times couldn’t get enough of the whiz kid and began running frequent stories about William on the front page of the paper. At nine years old, William took the entrance exams for Harvard University and although he wasn’t sufficiently challenged by them, he wasn’t accepted. The college felt he was too “emotionally immature” for college life. Not to be deterred, William’s parents helped him find something useful to do which amounted to spending time at Tufts College correcting mistakes in mathematicians’ books, trying to find errors in Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity and mastering other foreign languages, among other things. During this time, Boris and Sarah weren’t sitting idly by while their brilWilliam James Sidis... Continued on Page 3

COLLEGE LIFE
Although he was clearly academically successful, William found it difficult to relate to his peers. He was teased and picked on and in general, didn’t really enjoy being the center of attention for his brilliance. He graduated cum laude at 16 and at his graduation, he said, “I want to live the perfect life. The only way to live the perfect life is to live it in seclusion. I have always hated crowds.

• One estimate put William’s IQ at 50 to 100 points higher than Einstein’s and another claimed it was as high as 300 (100 is average and over 140 is genius). • Later in his life, William said, “The very sight of a mathematical formula makes me physically ill.â€? He reportedly burst into tears at the idea of doing computations at one of his random jobs.
Although it was clear that William was brilliant and could have his pick of many successful careers, he struggled with his own identity. His parents’ influence kept him from serving his 18-

• William coined the term peridromphile, which describes a person who has an intense love of railways or trains. He was one himself and published a book under the name Frank Folupa describing all 1600 forms of streetcar transfers possible.
After a brief attempt at law school, William once again fell into the limelight when he was arrested for participating in an anti-draft demonstration that turned into a riot. While he served his short stint in jail, he met the only women he ever claimed to love – Martha Foley.

In July 1944, William was found in his small apartment in Boston where he had suffered a stroke. He never regained consciousness and was declared dead at age 46, still carrying a picture of Martha Foley in his wallet.
Those words would echo in William’s mind as he entered the work force as a mathematics teacher at Rice University in Houston. His infamy had preceded him and he found it incredibly difficult to teach students that were older than he was.

During this time, William wrote dozens of books (also under pseudonyms) although none was particularly successful. In 1924, the press tracked him down again and began chronicling his rather embarrassing adult life. In 1937, The New Yorker published an article titled “April Fool! (a reference to his birthdate), which put William’s fall from grace in plain (and painful) black and white. He sued the magazine for libel and the case made it all the way to the Supreme Court before it was settled seven years later.
After two years of stalling, Harvard University finally allowed William to attend at the age of 11. He gave a presentation to an audience of about 100 professors and advanced math students about four-dimensional bodies, most of which went completely over everyone’s heads.

BENEFITS OF TREATMENT

estern medicine is quite new, in terms of history, and can be very effective in treating illness, disease, and injuries. Life Energy Flow Tai Yi is an ancient healing modality and can be very effective in treating these as well. It’s a matter of personal choice to determine which course of action is best for you. Life Energy Flow Tai Yi utilizes the meridian system of the body in a similar fashion as acupressure or acupuncture. Tai Yi predates acupuncture in history. While acupuncture can be effective in treating physical ailments, Tai Yi treats physical, mental, and emotional ailments. Tai Yi can help treat anything from heart disease, slow circulation, brain functioning, and imbalanced hormones to depression, anger, fear, anxiety, and confusion (brain fog).
Life goes by very fast and, for some, it’s a short experience. Whatever length of life you have in front of you, ask yourself if it’s the highest quality of life you can or want to experience. Quality of life is not about a large bank account, but can include finances.

awareness of how you can improve or enhance your general quality of life. If you are not experiencing life passion and a sense of contentment and joy, then there definitely room to improve quality. Tai Yi is a movement of energy, just like receiving a massage or practicing yoga. Yoga and massage support movement. Now it’s time for you to support your movement: the movement into a higher quality life.

If you are one who continues to struggle financially, a question to ask would be ‘why’. Then you could receive a treatment that helps you gain focus, clarity, and direction to identify the answer. Could it be your parents had a poverty mindset and you adopted that without realizing it? Could it be that someone told you that there was a limit to the amount of joy and peace you could experience? Maybe you were told that life is painful and expect that at some point. It could be simply that you fear self-empowerment for one reason or another. Looking at patterns and false perceptions is key to maximizing the benefit of a Tai Yi treatment.

ertain foods remind me of fall. A tray of beautiful red cabbages with a hint of purple and blue on their ruffled leaves resembles a bouquet of flowers. Raw red cabbage is a flavorful addition to salads, or it can be slow-cooked to sweet perfection as a side dish. One of my favorite recipes for red cabbage is from award-winning cooking instructor Rick Rodgers’s cookbook, “Autumn Gatherings: Casual Food to Enjoy With Family and Friends” (Morrow Cookbooks). From cabbage, squash and root vegetables to cranberries, apples and hearty, savory dishes, Rodgers shares uncomplicated recipes that are perfect for a cozy, comforting meal or a holiday feast. This week’s recipe, which features red cabbage, sausages and apples, is a classic example of German cooking and celebrates the bounty of the season. Rodger says that he “learned early in my cooking life not to try and rush the cabbage, as it needs plenty of time to soften into the melting mass of sweet and sour ingredients that makes it so unique, and becomes the perfect place to cook your favorite sausages.” The apples and apple juice enhances the sweetness of the cabbage, and the vinegar preserves the color of the cabbage. The flavors of the dish intensify the next day, so if possible, prepare the cabbage ahead of time. Nestle the sausages in the pot, let them cook while the cabbage is re-heating, and enjoy the flavors of fall!
OKTOBERFEST SAUSAGES WITH RED CABBAGE 3 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided 6 slices thick-sliced bacon, coarsely chopped 1 large onion, thinly sliced 2 Golden Delicious apples, peeled, cored and cut into 1/4-inch thick wedges 1 (2 1/2-pound) head red cabbage, cut into wedges, core removed and thinly sliced 1 1/2 cups apple juice 1/3 cup cider vinegar 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme 1 bay leaf Salt and freshly ground black pepper

1. To make the red cabbage and apples, heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a very large Dutch oven or flameproof casserole over medium heat. Add bacon and cook, stirring occasionally, until crisp and browned, about 8 minutes. With slotted spoon, transfer to paper towels to drain, leaving fat in pan.

REVERSING MEMORY LOSS
H
ere’s something many of us have been waiting on: the reversal of memory loss due to Alzheimer’s disease. UCLA, working with the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, created a multi-faceted approach to help participants with mild cognitive impairment, and for the first time, memory loss was reversed. Granted, the study was small, just 10 people, but six patients were able to return to their job or found their job much easier to perform. Nine of the 10 participants experienced memory improvement starting within a few months, and some regained functions that they hadn’t had for many years. The final participant, with late-stage Alzheimer’s showed no improvement. Alzheimer’s historically has been treated with monopharmaceuticals, which is one drug. It either works or it doesn’t.
The program created for this study was different for each participant, but each involved 36 therapeutic points. Some of the overall parameters involved sleep changes, diet that eliminated gluten and processed food, fasting with timed meals, meditation for stress reduction, vitamins at specific times and exercise. All were very tightly regulated and complex -and difficult to follow. No participant managed to follow all of the protocols, but they apparently saw enough of a benefit that they kept working at it. No, this program isn’t something to try to create on your own. All of it was individualized per participant based on tests and ongoing progress. But your doctor can get more information for you. If anything stands out as potentially promising for you or someone you know who has Alzheimer’s, it’s worth a look. For more information, or for your doctor to see, go online to www.impactaging.com and search for “Reversal of Cognitive Decline: A Novel Therapeutic Program.” Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. prepare his team for the game? Of course he did, but he used it anyway. Pragmatism, in Josh McDaniels case, triumphed over principle and it cost him $50,000, his job, and relative football obscurity.
ACQUIRE CONFIDENCE PART 2.5:
PREPARE FOR ACTION: ESTABLISH PRINCIPLES By Ron Ross
“Would you like to know a quick and easy way to discern right from wrong?” I asked the students in a college class I was teaching. Every head bobbed enthusiastically up and down indicating they were interested. “Before I tell you, let me say this.” I paused as the room went silent. The students leaned forward as I spoke in almost a whisper, “You
Tom Osborne led the University of Nebraska football team to national titles in 1994, 1995 and 1997. After his stellar career as a coach he was elected by the citizens of Nebraska to the U.S. House of Representatives. After he retired from politics, in 2006 he was rehired by the University as Athletic Director. On Jan 1, 2013 he retired from that job with his reputation fully intact and his legacy of honesty, integrity and authenticity assured.

Coach McDaniels choose pragmatism; Coach Osborne chose principle. Jesus told the story of a man who built his house on sand and when the winds and waves came up the house fell down. Another person built his house on solid rock saw it endure the storms and stand strong. Live your life with moral principles that flow from natural law and you will live with favor, friends, and fulfillment. When you are buffeted by the winds of temptations and the storms of discouragement your house will stand and your legacy will be assured. Thomas Jefferson summarized it this way: “In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock.” Establish “matters of principle” for a delightful, meaningful, and wellregarded life.

LASER HAIR REMOVAL NOT ALWAYS EFFECTIVE DEAR DR. ROACH: We spent a considerable amount of money on our teen daughter’s laser hair-removal procedures, but the poor thing takes after her swarthy father, and the treatment seems to have no effect. Is there any real science behind this treatment? -- S.O. ANSWER: There certainly is real science, and laser hair removal is effective, but its effectiveness is limited, and it’s important to have realistic expectations. Laser treatment usually doesn’t remove hair entirely, forever. Most people will have less hair, thinner hair and lighter hair. About two-thirds of people will have at least a 50 percent reduction in the treated areas after a single laser course. With multiple courses, 90 percent of people will get up to a 50 percent reduction. Lasers tend to work best for light-skinned people with dark hair. Even people with apparently complete results usually get hair regrowth after six to 12 months. Your daughter appears to be among those who have a poor response to laser. Besides shaving or plucking, other options include chemicals to remove the hair, medications to prevent hair growth and electrolysis, which is the only permanent hair-loss method -- and even that depends on the technique of the technician. A dermatologist can help guide the right treatment for your daughter. *** DR. ROACH WRITES: In January I wrote about cluster headaches, and many

readers took the time to write in with what had been helpful for them. Among the treatments recommended were the antidepressant Zoloft, and the anesthetic lidocaine administered in the nose. Several readers wrote in to tell me that acupuncture cured them. Mold and food sensitivities also were frequently mentioned, with an antihistamine and avoidance of offending agents being helpful. Botox, commonly used for migraine, was the key for at least one reader. Finally, several people said chiropractic manipulation cured their headaches. It is easy to say, “If it worked for someone else, it will work for me.” However, the body is vastly complex, and it takes a great deal of judgment to know what is right for a given person. I don’t pretend to have all the answers, but I wanted to share my readers’ experiences. What is certain is that none of these treatments will work for everybody. Many headache questions reach me on a regular basis. For a general explanation of headaches and their treatment, consider the booklet on that topic. It presents a comprehensive view. To order a copy, write: Dr. Roach -- No. 901W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four days for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Faced with the higher-priced time-release medication for hypertension, my physician said, “Just cut them in half.” I have been doing this for about two years. Is this a viable solution or too simplistic? -- P.T. ANSWER: It might be a problem. Some time-release medicines work by the pill dissolving slowly or other methods that rely on an intact pill. Breaking them can cause all the medicine to release at once. Ask your pharmacist whether it is safe to break a pill or capsule in half.
*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2014 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

The song’s black-and-white video shows pieces of lost Americana, big cars, families, the American dream, and seems to point to the political as the reason why.

That ingredient (which continued to be part of the formula until the 1940s) probably helped

The new name was derived from the size of the soda bottle (7 ounces) and “bottoms up,” which is presumably what many people did during the difficult years of the Depression. • A man in Orange County, California, stole a diamond worth $25,000 and, despite being arrested for the crime, was able to smuggle it into prison with him by swallowing it. All that effort was in vain, however; prison guards found the diamond and returned it to the jewelry shop. • If you’re using an average brand-new pencil, you’ll be able to draw a line about 35 miles long before running out of lead (though you’ll have to stop for sharpening breaks, of course). *** Thought for the Day: “Try to learn something about everything and everything about something.” -- Thomas Henry Huxley (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

That’s how this business works people. I even managed to realize my bone head error several days before the paper was released, but it was too late. The issue had been sent to print. It was over. Soon the column would be in black and white and the world (er, El Paso County) would know my blunder. And they did. People were all over this one, so quick to point out my blatant error.

omething happened last week that has never happened before. People from all around me, friends, family, acquaintances, and out of town visitors approached me to talk about Nick Snips. I was baffled! I mean, never before in the almost two-year history of Nick Snips had anyone ever given me the slightest hint that they even knew the column existed. But here they were, spelling out in detail what I had written about last week.

Truth is: I wrote the article almost an entire week before you read it.
Why is it that we as a society are so quick in pointing out each other’s gaffes? Whether it be face-to-face or behind closed doors, seldom do we compliment more than we criticize in a day. Think about that. I’m guilty of it myself. I’m so quick to rumble about how slow the grocery store clerk was or how bad my coffee from the coffee shop tasted. I don’t think I’ve ever told a cashier how quick and efficient they were. Yet I am, by all societal measures, a kind gentleman. I open the door for people all the time. Seriously. If I’m in the parking lot, I will scope out the group of old ladies twenty parking spaces down and begin calculating. I hurry my walk by 6 paces per minute, ensuring I will beat them to the door (but not so badly that I have to awkwardly wait for them to get there). I get there about 5 steps ahead of them and open that bad boy up. And it feels soooo good. Instant fulfillment!

Then, what usually happens is this – I get in line behind the clan of elderly women I just so selflessly helped. They approach the food counter. They are very thorough in deciding what exactly they would like to eat. They ask if the fast food joint accepts checks. The cashier begrudgingly says yes. They fish the checkbook out of their oversized purse. They scratch around a pen until something that kind of looks like it could be money is passed from the customer to the cashier. The 17year old cashier looks at the check like it’s a tickets to a Grand Funk Railroad concert – he wants nothing to do with this. Meanwhile, I’m behind them regretting I ever helped contribute to this slow motion reenactment of the creation of the universe. It’s taking f-o-r-e-v-e-r. I find myself snickering mean sentiments behind their back. So basically, I’m not that great of a guy

after all. Maybe it was karma that cursed me all week with this vexing error. Perhaps I just made an honest mistake and I deserve the benefit of the doubt. Either way, if you take anything away from this glorified admission letter, let it be this – be nicer to people. Even if it’s just for the week. Compliment a stranger’s outfit. Tell a waiter they have a great personality. Don’t fabricate these things, give genuine praises. Try to notice more what you like about people than what you dislike. You might feel better about yourself. You might just be glad you gave Nick Snips a second chance.

LIVING GOD’S GIFTS bringing Christ into your financial life
INVESTING FROM A BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE
by Chuck Maher, CFP®
...BRING CHRIST INTO OUR FINANCIAL LIVES
YOU’RE 50 NOW WHAT?
S
o you just turned 50, or maybe you’ve been in your 50s for a while, retirement may still seem a way off, but it is fast approaching. Now is a good time for evaluating your retirement health, make adjustments as you need to and do what’s necessary to catch up. From here on out for every year you wait it will only get harder to make your retirement dreams real. Here are a handful of action steps you may want to consider taking now as the retirement clock clicks down.
VISIT YOUR DOCTOR A financially successful retirement means little if you are not in good enough health to enjoy it. Make the time to visit with your doctor. Get a complete in-depth physical. Talk to your doctor about what screenings make sense for you and get them done. Find out what lifestyle changes you can make to insure that you enter retirement as physically healthy as you can.
PROTECT YOUR INCOME AND YOUR WEALTH Your income not only provides for your day-to-day needs it is also the primary funding source for your retirement plans. What would happen if that income stopped because you became disabled and could no longer work? For too many the funds that they have accumulated for retirement are quickly depleted to cover daily living expenses. Make sure that you have adequate disability insurance. If your employer does not provide it, consider obtaining coverage through an individual disability policy. Now is also a good time to look into long-term care insurance. Without it you run the risk of depleting your retirement funds in order to provide for necessary elder care including home healthcare, assisted living or nursing home services. Fifty is a good age to start investigating your options. As you get older long-term care insurance becomes more difficult to qualify for and more expensive.
DEVELOP A RETIREMENT SPENDING PLAN There are all kinds of calculators and rule of thumbs for how much money you will need in retirement. Most are a good starting point, however a better approach is to invest the time to develop a realistic spending plan that supports the lifestyle you want in retirement.
Honoring God with Your Financial Blessings CHUCK MAHER CFP PO Box 39 Monument, CO 80132
chuck@chuckmahercfp.com www.chuckmahercfp.com
Start now to systematically eliminate credit card debt. Consider paying off your mortgage before you retire and build up your emergency fund for those unexpected expenses.
CREATE A RETIREMENT PORTFOLIO Make sure your current investment allocation supports your retirement goals. In retirement you’ll want to have investments that can support the income you will need as well as provide capital appreciation to offset the loss of purchasing power due to inflation. Many financial advisors can stress test your portfolio to help you determine how your investments might perform in different economic environments.
CATCH UP Don’t forget to take advantage of the catch-up provisions available through many tax advantaged savings accounts. For 2013 those over age 50 can contribute $5,500 in addition to the $17,500 limit to a 401(k) plan and $1,000 above the $5,500 maximum for an IRA. All of this may seem like a lot of work, and it is, but the effort that you put in today could very well be a determining factor for your success in retirement. The good news is that you still have time. Use it wisely. “But the one who listens and does not act is like a person who built a house on ground without a foundation. When the river burst against it, it collapsed at once and was completely destroyed.” Luke7:49 Chuck Maher is a Certified Financial PlannerTM practitioner specializing in Christian values based financial planning and investing. 10 TIPS TO AVOID BLACK FRIDAY BLUES
D
uring the holiday shopping season, millions of Americans put their financial common sense on the shelf, tucking it away into a winter hibernation of sorts. That makes it much easier to take part in the once-a-year phenomenon known as Black Friday, the mother of all shopping days. The problem is that financial reality lies just around the corner, emerging in January as a mailbox full of credit-card statements. With avid shoppers counting down the days until the Black Friday bonanza, the National Foundation for Credit Counseling offers 10 reminders of the consequences of overspending: 1) Adding new debt on top of old: Never a good idea, yet many people will enter the 2014 holiday shopping season still paying for 2013 purchases. When debt is carried over from month-to-month, cardholders lose the benefit of a grace period, when monthly credit-card bills can be paid before interest starts to accrue. When debt is revolved, new purchases incur interest immediately. 2) Paying interest on the interest: When a debt is not paid in full by the due date and carried over from month to month, interest is added to the balance. This amount adds up over time, making it harder to become debt free. 3) Late fees and over-limit fees can cause balances to skyrocket: Issuers may charge a late fee of $25 with the first late payment, and with 45 days notice, increase interest rates on new purchases. Making more than
15
one late payment in a six-month period can trigger higher late fees, with the penalty APR also applied to existing balances. 4) Failure to pay as agreed can affect your credit report: Late or missed payments stay on the report for seven years, and allimportant credit scores are based the credit report. 5) Less available credit on existing cards: Credit cards have a spending limit beyond which the user cannot charge without penalty. Since no one knows what tomorrow holds, overuse of open lines of credit can leave you without a credit safety net for unplanned expenses or emergencies. 6) Less access to new or additional credit: Issuers are less likely to extend more credit to someone who cannot handle their debt obligations. If credit is granted, it likely will be at a higher interest rate. 7) Beyond credit cards: Decisions involving insurance, renting an apartment, establishing utility or cellphone services, or finding employment can be affected by a person’s ability to manage debt. 8) Servicing a lot of debt can leave less money for other key parts of financial security, such as saving or investing. 9) Bills not paid on time can have very serious consequences: Lawsuits, judgments and wage garnishment can have a longterm negative impact on a someone’s daily life, as well as future borrowing power. 10) Overspending can force a person into making desperate choices, such as resorting to pay-day loans, pawn shops, bankruptcy or debt settlement. “Now is the time for financial awareness, not after the damage is done,” an NFCC representative said. “Consumers need to ask themselves if taking on unmanageable debt this holiday season is worth putting their financial well-being at risk.” Visit www.MyHolidayCheckUp.org for a free financial assessment tool.
