Zenkoji Temple

“O-juzu chodai” The two head priests at Zenkoji Temple recite the sutras every morning in the main hall, which is called “O-asaji.” As the priests make their trip to and from the main hall for O-asaji or a prayer service they bestow blessings on the visitors lined up in front of the main hall by touching rosaries to their heads in an act called “O-juzu chodai”(rosary please).

Ⓒ善光寺

Nagano City developed from Zenkoji Temple’s surrounding Monzen-machi. In April of 2015 the new Hokuriku Shinkansen Line opened between Tokyo and Kanazawa bringing many more tourists from the Hokuriku area. The walk to Zenkoji Temple from Nagano station is about 2km with many shops to see along the way.

Nakano City receives little rainfall and copious amounts of sunlight. This combined with the temperature difference between day and night makes it possible to harvest delicious fruit. During harvest time visitors can enjoy fruit picking.* *Fruit picking

The Snow Monkey Park has been welcoming visitors since

LIFE magazine ran a cover story of the Snow Monkeys in 1970 making them world famous.

1964 to share the magical world of the Japanese macaques. Now popularly known as the Snow Monkeys, their habit of bathing in the hot spring attracts people from all over the world. Each winter the macaques endure freezing

Grand Prize Winner 2006 Nature's Best Photography Windland Smith Rice International Awards SNOW MONKEY AND BABY by Toshio Hagiwara Nagano, Japan

temperatures in a land of heavy snowfall. Visitors can stand incredibly close to the snow monkeys as they relax and warm up in the hot spring. Their unique way of life also attracts many famous researchers and photographers.

Snow Monkey Park

Opened in 1964. Known as the location where monkeys take a hot spring bath, visitors come from all over the world to see this phenomenon. During the warmer months, the monkeys do not enter the hot spring as often, however it is one of the few places where the intriguing Japanese macaques can be observed up close in their natural habitat. Please take advantage of this opportunity to witness the monkeys’ behavior first-hand.

Summer

Spring

Summer is child-rearing season As the height of summer approaches, the monkeys’ sleek short summer hair grows in. The adult monkeys spend more time in the shade and the young monkeys play and run unbothered by the heat. The babies’ legs are now stronger and babies begin to play with each other. Their teeth begin to come in and they start eating food in addition to their mother’s milk.

Spring is birth season In April spring arrives late to Jigokudani. Food is in abundance in new grass and tree shoots, green leaves, flowers, and buds. From the end of April through the end of June, new lives are born one after another delighting visitors as they observe the adorable new babies.

Winter

Autumn

Autumn is eating and mating season In preparation for winter the monkeys eat plenty of nutritious nuts and fruit. It is the busiest season of the year. Mating season approaches and the monkeys’ faces and bottoms are redder than usual as the males repeatedly make energetic appeals with all their might. With the first snow, the mating season comes to an end and the troop returns to normal.

Snow Monkey Resorts Vol.03

8

Winter is endured patiently The monkeys’ summer hair falls out and is replaced with longer hair in preparation for winter. The monkeys huddle together enduring the cold days of winter. Food during winter consists of tree bark and winter buds alone, which means the monkeys survive winter with the large amounts of nuts and fruits they ate in autumn to provide sustenance. The babies born in spring have now grown so much it would be more appropriate to call them children. While they still drink their mother’s breast milk, they also forage for food on their own.

Meal

GOEN (Open this July at Yudanaka Station)

Attention ◦Please do not attempt to touch or startle the monkeys. ◦ P lease keep a safe distance from the monkeys while watching. ◦Please do not show food to or feed the monkeys. ◦ S pecial photography (use of underwater or aerial photographic equipment, or bringing any type of special equipment close to the monkeys) is prohibited.

GOEN, a new Japanese Dining Bar, offers staple dishes including yakitori, tempura, sushi, sashimi, local fresh vegetables and craft beer for you to enjoy.

Shiga Kogen Joshin’etsu-kogen National Park stretches across the three prefectures of Gunma, Niigata, and Nagano. Shiga Kogen, where nature remains untouched, occupies the center of the Park as a resort area. In spring it is beautiful with its new greens, summers are comfortable with cool breezes, and autumn sees the area tinted with the colors of the changing leaves. Whenever you visit, impressive scenery awaits. PICK UP!

Trekking

Shiga Kogen UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

If you are looking to take in the plentiful nature of Shiga Kogen, we recommend trekking. “Guide Trekking,” where a guide with intimate knowledge of Shiga Kogen accompanies visitors, is very popular.

In 1980, Shiga Kogen was registered as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve as it had actively been working towards “functional conservation,” “economic and social development,” and “academic research support” for the purpose of creating balance between the preservation of the ecosystem and its sustainable utilization.

Forty-eight Lakes /Onumaike Lake Course The most popular trekking course. Walk through the virgin forest touring 48 lakes including Shibuike Lake heading toward Onumaike Lake with its mysterious red torii gates floating on the lake’s surface.

Nozawa Onsen Village It is said the hot spring at Nozawa Onsen was discovered between 724 – 748 A.D. and in the Edo period it was used as a therapeutic bath. Now, it is visited by a large number of tourists who enjoy the hot springs and ski slopes in the area. Within the village there are 13 public bathhouses called “soto-yu” that can be used free of charge. Touring the soto-yu bathhouses has become quite popular.

Hotel

Nozawa Grand Hotel Situated at the highest point in the village, the outdoor bath offers beautiful views of the snowy landscape. The outdoor bath is open to the public from 1pm until 6pm and costs 800 yen for adults. Nonresidents can also enjoy the breakfast buffet and evening dinner. Breakfast is from 7:30am until 9am and costs 1,500 yen. Please reserve a table in advance for dinner. Why not take some luxury time out at this ski resort hotel. E-mail:nozawa@nagaden-net.co.jp

Soto-yu The 13 soto-yu locations scattered throughout the village are 100% natural hot springs with continuous flows of hot water. They are not only available for the villagers, but also guest use. One soto-yu in particular, Oyu, located in the center of the hot springs area, conveys the style of the Edo period in its architecture and has become the symbol of Nozawa Onsen. Each visitor to the soto-yu can decide for themselves how much they want to pay as an entrance fee to the bathhouse by placing their offering in the collection box outside.

Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort The longest running distance is 10,000m, there is an elevation difference of 1,085m, the steepest slope is 39 degrees and there are 36 slopes. In the summit area there are gentle slope courses as well allowing even beginning skiers the chance to enjoy excellent quality snow and amazing views.

Karuizawa Town

Karuizawa boasts both beautiful natural scenery and remnants of the good old days. One of Japan’s most famous resort towns, Karuizawa. In 1886, the Canadian-born missionary Alexander Croft Shaw fell in love with the nature and climate of Karuizawa and built his vacation home here. Since then, many non-Japanese began visiting Karuizawa as a summer retreat, and eventually the Imperial family and other prominent national figures began visiting with the town developing as a summer resort.

Shiraito Falls Karuizawa From a height of 3m, across a width of 70m, groundwater falls like gentle threads from the curved bedrock. Its delicate beauty is reminiscent of a Japanese painting.

In particular, from the end of October through the beginning of November the brilliant colors of the changing leaves are breathtaking. The path surrounding the pond is well cared for, and it takes approximately 15 minutes to walk once around the pond.

Saisei-no-michi There are numerous locations and streets of historical significance in Karuizawa.

Onioshidashi Park This is the site where profuse amounts of lava from Mt. Asama’s 1783 eruption flowed to and hardened. An overwhelming, naturally made landscape spreads before visitors. Hours of operation 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (entrance is permitted until 4:30 p.m.)

Stroll and Snack

Not only did the foreign missionaries find Karuizawa the perfect summer getaway, but they also introduced and taught the locals how to grow highland-grown vegetables from their own countries which were well suited for growing in the cool climate. They remain a pillar of Karuizawa’s agricultural industry.

It is a tradition in Karuizawa to enjoy a stroll through town while snacking on the local soft serve ice cream, which has remained popular for 40 years, local specialty curryfilled bread rolls, or a gelato made with fresh milk and fruit.

Wood Carving Workshop at Karuizawa

Jam Jam making in the area began with the foreign missionaries teaching the process to the locals. A wide variety of jams are sold here, all made from carefully selected ingredients.

Manufacturing began with furniture carved for the local vacation homes of foreign residents. The often-used cherry blossom design became popular among foreigners as a flower representing the image of Japan.
