Snow Monkey Resorts Vol.05

Snow Monkey Park The lively Japanese macaques are the most northern primates in the world and roam the mountainous terrain of Japan. The Jigokudani Monkey Park provides you with the rare opportunity to observe the wild Japanese Macaques in their natural habitat. The park is remotely located at the edge of wilderness, removed from human settlements. The monkeys are most famous for their proclivity of bathing in hot springs when it’s freezing in winter, but they come down to the Park practically every single day. Visitors can enjoy observing them at incredibly close distance throughout the year, with each season having different monkey behavior to see.

Spring

Spring is birth season

As soon as the first sunrays of spring hit the Snow Monkey Park, the monkey become more active, rolling around the park. Birthing season starts from the end of April to the end of June. If you're visiting in spring, you get the opportunity to meet some of the newborns of the troop.

Summer

Autumn

Summer is child-rearing season

Autumn is eating and mating season

As the height of summer approaches, the monkeys’ sleek short summer hair grows in. The adult monkeys spend more time in the shade and the young monkeys play and run unbothered by the heat. The babies’ legs are now stronger and babies begin to play with each other. Their teeth begin to come in and they start eating food in addition to their mother’s milk.

1

Nagano Dentetsu

In preparation for winter the monkeys eat plenty of nutritious nuts and fruit. It is the busiest season of the year. Mating season approaches and the monkeys’ faces and bottoms are redder than usual as the males repeatedly make energetic appeals with all their might. With the first snow, the mating season comes to an end and the troop returns to normal.

Winter is endured patiently The monkeys’ summer hair falls out and is replaced with longer hair. The monkeys huddle together enduring the cold days of winter. Food during winter consists of tree bark and winter buds alone, which means the monkeys survive winter with the large amounts of nuts and fruits they ate in autumn to provide sustenance. The babies born in spring have now grown so much it would be more appropriate to call them children. While they still drink their mother’s breast milk, they also forage for food on their own.

Shiga Kogen

Joshin’etsu-kogen National Park stretches across the three prefectures of Gunma, Niigata, and Nagano. Shiga Kogen, where nature remains untouched, occupies the center of the Park as a resort area. In spring it is beautiful with its new greens, summers are comfortable with cool breezes, and autumn sees the area tinted with the colors of changing leaves. Whenever you visit, impressive scenery await.

Trekking If you are looking to take in the plentiful nature of Shiga Kogen, we recommend trekking. “Guide Trekking,” where a guide with intimate knowledge of Shiga Kogen accompanies visitors, is very popular. Forty-eight Lakes /Onumaike Lake Course

The most popular trekking course. Walk through the virgin forest touring 48 lakes including Shibuike Lake. Head to Onumaike Lake with its mysterious red torii gates floating on the lake’s surface.
