Snow Monkey Park Jigokudani Yaen Koen, also known as the Snow Monkey Park, has been a safe haven to a troop of wild Japanese macaques since 1964. At the Park, you get the rare opportunity to observe the wild monkeys in their natural habitat and from close distance.

Hot Spring Monkeys

Prepare Yourself for a 30 min Walk in Winter

The Jigokudani Snow Monkeys are the only monkeys in the world that bathe in a hot spring to survive winter. The habit of bathing came after a young macaque chased an apple accidentally thrown into the hot spring bath of Japanese inn Korakukan. He liked it so much that he started getting into the onsen regularly and slowly but surely the other monkeys followed. Jigokudani Valley

Rules of the Snow Monkey Park

*The Park may close due to unforeseeable circumstances such as excessive snowfall.

NO

NO

OK NO

Most Northern Primate The Japanese macaque is the most northern primate and is spread throughout the forests of North Japan. In winter everything is covered in deep snow, with temperatures dropping below zero. These monkeys became known as “snow monkeys” due to their natural environment being so snowy.

BUS Timetable

1. Please keep an appropriate distance from the monkeys and do not touch or startle the monkeys. 2. Do not show or give them any food. 3. Do not bring dogs, cats, or any other pets inside. 4. Photography is allowed but do not get your camera or mobile phone too close to the monkeys (selfiesicks are not allowed inside the park).

To keep the appropriate distance between wild monkeys and human settlements, the Park is remotely located with a 30 minute walk along the Yumichi forest trail being the only way to get there in winter. The path is unpaved and could be slippery and icy, so dress warm with good boots. You can get rentals at the Snow Monkey Resorts Info & Gift Shop located at the trail entrance. There is no toilet along the forest trail. Please use the public toilet at the Snow Monkey Park's parking lot in Kanbayashi Onsen.

Nagano City is the capital of Nagano Prefecture, and is known for holding one of Japan's most prominent temple complexes, Zenko-ji. The city was the main stage for the 1998 Olympics and still has many facilities and symbols of the world-famous event strewn all over. Nowadays, the city has a vibrant atmosphere, attracting visitors from far and wide.

Zenko-ji Nakamise Shopping Street

Nagano City

On the pilgrimage path to the temple of Zenko-ji you will walk through Nakamise Street, a lively street with a myriad of souvenir shops and eateries. There are a variety of things on offer, such as Buddhist items, local delicacies like oyaki (a steamed bun filled with vegetables) apple custard pies, and Nagano-only souvenirs.

Soba - buckwheat noodles

Soba (buckwheat noodles) is a regional speciality of Nagano Prefecture and a muchbeloved dish of the Japanese. If you're looking to try some, there are plenty of soba restaurants around Nagano Station and Zenko-ji Temple.

Yoshinoya Sake Tasting Experience

Ⓒ善光寺

Yoshinoya is a 200-year-old sake brewery with some of the best quality sake around, found at the west side of the Nio-mon Gate. Nagano's rice is superb and their spring water is crystal clear, creating the most suitable base for premium rice-wine. At Yoshinoya, you can sample a variety of their sake, as well as their own brand of plum wine (a favourite amongst foreign visitors), to help you find a good souvenir from Nagano.

Zenko-ji temple is one of Japan's most important and largest wooden temples. The temple complex was founded in the 7th century and is major pilgrimige site as it houses Japan's oldest Buddhist statue, allegedly made by Amida Buddha himself. It is said that anyone who prays here can reach paradise, regardless of religious affiliation, gender, or status.

Nio-mon Gate The Nio-mon Gate is the entry gate to the Zenko-ji complex and over a 100 years old. Two big, scary statues stand guard and are said to work together to protect Buddhism and the temple complex.

The hot springs of Nozawa Onsen were discovered in the 8th Century. During the Edo period the baths were used for healing purposes; now they are enjoyed by many skiers and tourists visiting Japan. Within the village there are 13 free public baths called “soto-yu”. Visiting each of the public baths (soto-yu meguri) is also popular amongst people staying in the village.

Nozawa Onsen Village Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort The resort has 36 trails with an elevation of 1,085m; its longest trail is 10,000m and the steepest gradient is 39 degrees. There are gentle slopes at the summit so beginners may also enjoy the area’s exceptional snow quality and spectacular views.

Nozawa Grand Hotel Situated at the highest point of the village, the hotel's outdoor bath offers beautiful views of the snowy landscape. The outdoor bath is open to the public from 11:00 to 18:00 and costs 800 yen for adults. Non-residents can also enjoy the breakfast buffet and evening dinner. Breakfast is from 7:30 until 9:00 and costs 1,500 yen. Please reserve a table in advance for dinner. Take some luxury time out at this ski resort hotel. E-mail: nozawa@nagaden-net.co.jp

Soto-yu

Tour of the public baths

The 13 soto-yu locations scattered throughout the village are 100% natural hot springs with continuous flows of hot water. They are not only available for the villagers, but also guest use. One soto-yu in particular, Oyu, located in the center of the hot springs area, conveys the style of the Edo period in its architecture and has become the symbol of Nozawa Onsen. Each visitor to the soto-yu can decide for themselves how much they want to pay as an entrance fee to the bathhouse by placing their offering in the collection box outside.

There are thirteen public baths within the village, all flowing with 100% natural hot spring water. The type of hot spring and the effect it has on the body differs depending on the bath, so it is fun to try them all and find your favourite. The “Oyu” bath is at the centre of the village and is the icon of Nozawa Onsen. It is a beautiful building in the architectural style of an Edo period bathhouse.

Pickled nozawana is one of Nagano prefecture's local dishes. Nozawa Onsen has some of the best nozawana vegetables in the region. Pickled nozawana has plant-derived lactic acid, which is said to be good for digestive health. The frequent consumption of the pickled vegetables contributes to the longetivity of Nagano prefecture residents.
