AN EXPRESSION OF
Heartfelt Thanks As we approach the season of giving thanks, South Texas Health System would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the physicians, nurses, healthcare professionals and volunteers who demonstrate every day that your health is our purpose.
This has never been more evident than it has been as the caregivers within our integrated network of four acute care facilities and six freestanding emergency departments have risen to the unique challenges of a global pandemic.
To the 600+ physicians who choose to practice medicine at South Texas Health System … … to our nearly 3,000 employees … … and to those who generously volunteer their time and expertise …
We really are all in this together. And for that we are thankful.
… we say Thank You. We couldn’t do what we do without you. We also extend our thanks to the residents of the Rio Grande Valley who have done their part to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

LOOKING OUT
Today’s Sports Medicine It’s Not Just for Professional Athletes
Sujan Gogu, DO, Board Certified in Sports Medicine and Pain Medicine
While sports medicine physicians often play a key role in keeping professional athletes on the field, even non-athletes can benefit from this type of medicine, says Sujan Gogu, DO. Dr. Gogu, a triple-board-certified sports medicine physician, shares helpful insights on his unique specialty, including the types of injuries he sees most frequently, some of the treatments he offers, and who can benefit from his area of expertise. Q: What is a sports medicine physician? Sports medicine physicians have significant specialized training in both the treatment and prevention of illness and injury. They are ideally suited to provide comprehensive medical care for athletes, sports teams or active individuals who are simply looking to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Sports medicine physicians specialize solely in non-surgical sports medicine and serve as team physicians at the youth level, NCAA, NFL, MLB, NBA, WNBA, MLS and NHL, as well as with Olympic teams. Sports medicine physicians can maximize nonoperative treatment, guide appropriate referrals to physical and occupational therapies, and if necessary, expedite referral to an orthopedic/sports surgeon. Sports medicine physicians are ideally suited to provide comprehensive medical care for the non-athlete as well and are excellent resources for the individual who wishes to become active or begin an exercise program. For the “weekend warrior” or “industrial athlete” who experiences an injury, the same expertise used for the competitive athlete can be applied to return the individual as quickly as possible to full function.

Q: What is the age range and athletic level of the patients you treat? I address a wide range of issues and have extensive experience treating patients of all ages, including pediatric, high school, collegiate, professional, weekend warriors, industrial athletes and the geriatric population. I also take into consideration any chronic diseases a patient has, how we can create a customized emergency action plan, and diagnose new onset medical conditions. In addition to working with medical conditions related to sports and athletic performance, I have extensive experience in musculoskeletal injuries and pain.
Q: When should I see a sports medicine doctor? Patients generally see a sports medicine physician for musculoskeletal injuries. However, sports medicine physicians also have experience in medical conditions related to sports and athletic performance, including heart disease, asthma, traveler’s diarrhea, anemia, osteoporosis, steroids and performance-enhancing aids, banned substances by the USOC and NCAA, as well as concussions and head injuries. Typically, people see a sports medicine physician if any of the statements below apply. Acute Injury: After sustaining a sudden injury, we can help you determine exactly what is injured and whether you will recover most effectively with – or without – surgery. Chronic Injury: Long-lasting injuries and areas of discomfort will often improve or resolve with appropriate rehabilitation. We can identify and correct the training errors or biomechanical abnormalities that hinder your performance. Injury Prevention: By helping you understand why you sustained an injury – and not just what was injured – we will help keep you injury-free for future races and events. Performance Enhancement: Whether you are starting a new fitness program or wishing to take your abilities to the next level, we can connect you to a team of professionals – physical therapists, registered dietitians, podiatrists and more – to provide a comprehensive and well-rounded approach and maximize your athletic potential. The types of services I provide include things like common injections for bursitis and tendinopathy, concussion management, interventional spine procedures, joint aspiration and injection, osteopathic manipulative treatment and regenerative injection therapy. In addition, patients come to me for physicals, such as those needed for sports, immigration and the DOT.
Q: What makes a sports medicine specialist different from a general physician? Sports medicine physicians have received additional training in the non-musculoskeletal aspects of sports medicine. Common examples of these include: • Acute injuries (such as ankle sprains, muscle strains, knee and shoulder injuries, and fractures) • Overuse injuries (such as rotator cuff and other forms of tendonitis, stress fractures) • Medical and injection therapies for osteoarthritis • Concussion (mild traumatic brain injury) and other head injuries • Athletes with chronic or acute illness (such as infectious mononucleosis, asthma or diabetes) • Nutrition, supplements, ergogenic aids and performance issues • Exercise prescription for patients who want to increase their fitness • Injury prevention • “Return to play” decisions in the sick or injured athlete • Recommendations on safe strength training and conditioning exercises • Healthy lifestyle promotion In addition to receiving my board certification in sports medicine, I am also board certified in pain management and family medicine, making me well-rounded to provide comprehensive medical care for anyone.

The Van Burkleo Family has gifted $1 million to the UTRGV College of Education and P-16 Integration as a way to continue the legacy of philanthropy, civic engagement and community involvement established by their parents, James and Dorinda Van Burkleo. The scholarship was announced Monday, Oct. 4, during a press conference at Rio Bank . Siblings Terry Van Burkleo, Dee Anne Payne and Pat Van Burkleo created the Dorinda and James Van Burkleo Endowed Scholarship in early 2021 to help support students enrolled in their last semester of college who are par ticipating in the UTRGV Clinical Teaching Program. UTRGV President Guy Bailey said the Dorinda and James Van Burkleo Endowed Scholarship will benefit countless students in perpetuity. The legacy gift is in memory of their parents, they said, who knew first-hand the value of a highereducation institution and the need for such an endowment in the Valley.

Quinta M A Z AT L A N
The Perfect Rio Grande Valley Hobby By Quinta Mazatlan, Center for Urban Ecology
Starting a new hobby (or even a life-long vocation) is like building a fire. The initial spark, the flash of interest, comes easily, but keeping the fire alive takes more thought. It takes rearranging the logs with a poker, adding more when needed, and the occasional breath from a bellow. All in all, similar to a hobby, it takes direction and effort. Let’s consider birdwatching as that new hobby. The spark comes naturally, like lighting hitting a prairie; the spark bird. It could be a swallow twisting and turning overhead, or the quiet rustle of a thrasher in the forest understory. If you ask, most birdwatchers will be quite happy to share their spark bird. Beginning to birdwatch can seem daunting. There are thousands of birds to learn (10,000, if you want to know all of them in the world), new tools to help you find them, and new places to explore. But fortunately, birdwatching can be what you make it, and everyone can go at their own pace. Many people like to watch the birds that visit their yard; 38.7 million people, according to a US Fish and Wildlife survey. Others are in for the thrill of the chase, and are willing to drive, fly, or boat thousands of miles to see a new bird. Tools of the trade are next. Kiskadees, chachalacas, doves, and many other birds can easily be enjoyed and identified with our bare eyes
86
SOCIALIFE
and ears, but binoculars are important for seeing distant birds and getting more detailed views. Fortunately, there are many different options for binoculars, depending on budget and your personal preference. Another useful tool is a field guide, whether hardcopy or electronic. There a many good field guides out there, and some specifically come as phone apps. The key is to get one that shows different angles of a bird, points out important field marks, and tells where the bird can be found (habitat and geography). You can also find lots of the same information on the internet – it’s a great time to be a birdwatcher. The most important thing in beginning to birdwatch, however, is taking time to watch the birds. And this is where the best part of being a birdwatcher comes in: you can find them nearly everywhere and Quinta Mazatlan in McAllen is a great place to start your journey. You can watch birds while walking, jogging, or biking, just like you can sitting on a bench. Being able to do it at your own pace and at your own time is a great pleasure of birdwatching.

WHAT THE!~
ETIQUESTIONS Dr. Barbara Baggerly-Hinojosa
Now that the galas are back in full force, I was wondering about seats at the table. If we are invited guests at a company table, and we arrive first, is it ok for us to get the best seats at the table (the ones facing the stage)? The galas are certainly back in full force and have been so much fun! When you are an invited guest to a table for an event, it is best to check with the host before selecting your seat. If you arrive before the host, go ahead and pick a seat but do not pick the best seats (facing the stage). Those should be reserved for the host, CEO, or person who invited you to join the table.
If the basket of bread is close to me on the table, which way do I pass it around the table? If the basket of bread is close to you, offer the bread to the person on your left, get a piece for yourself, then pass it to your right.
I have always been so confused about American versus European style of eating with utensils. What is the difference? It can be confusing! With the American style, you have the fork in your left hand and the knife in your right hand. Once you cut your food, you place the knife down on the plate, and transfer the fork from your left hand to your right. With the European style, you have the fork in your left hand and the knife in your right hand, but you keep them there, and there is no transferring of the fork from left to right hand.

Carreta at the Museum of South Texas History By Tom Fort, Curator of Exhibits
Mr. and Mrs. Hale Schaleben
The wooden carreta be buey, or oxcart, was offered to the then Hidalgo County Historical Museum by Mr. and Mrs. Hale Schaleben, of Edinburg and the Tres Corrales Ranch, around 1980 or 1981. The Schalebens were long-time supporters of the museum, and most interested in its growth. Hale Schaleben’s parents were early residents of Edinburg. He himself was an attorney as well as a rancher. He kept longhorn cattle on the Tres Corrales. Both Hale and his wife Ray were up in years by 1981. Both have long since passed on. Around 1981 Ray contacted the

museum and asked if the museum wanted an old oxcart that they had at the ranch. Hale had bought it years earlier from an antiques dealer for their grandkids to play on. By around 1980 the kids were growing up, and the Schalebens thought the museum would be a better home for the carreta, since it was sitting outside in the elements. Museum staff went out to the ranch and looked at the cart and decided that it would be a great object for an exhibit about early ranch life. Subsequently, Hale and one or more of his ranch hands arrived with a trailer with the carreta parts on it. To display the oxcart, museum staff modified the Early Ranch Life exhibit area, widening the low platform and re-arranging some of the artifacts to accommodate the cart’s 16foot long tongue or pole. The cart’s “chassis,”with the pole, side frames
and their cross-pieces, plus the axle and wheels, was the only original portion when Hale bought it. He had his ranch carpenter make the missing parts – the upright posts and the horizontal rails connecting them. When it was all re-assembled the museum had one of the rarest objects in any Texas or other state’s museums. How rare? Before 1974, word had gone around the grapevine among borderlands museums that an original Mexican oxcart of the old solid-wheel type was for sale in McAllen, Texas. Evidently quite a few museums were interested. However, by the time another museum had called to inquire, the cart had been sold to a local rancher. Carretas like that simply weren’t available any longer. Their survival rates no doubt were pretty low. Probably most of them were used until they wore out, and finally became firewood after more modern wagons and later trucks became available.
The museum’s carreta is typical of very old oxcarts used in Mexico and elsewhere in Latin America. The basic form goes back--probably--to Spain of the 16th century and earlier– possibly the Middle Ages. The entire cart is of wood; originally no iron was used. Teamsters could wrap rawhide around the wheel rims to tighten them, and sometimes wrapped rawhide around the axle ends to reinforce them.

The basic chassis consists of a 16-foot long pole or tongue, with slots in the rear half for wooden cross-pieces. The wooden side-rails have corresponding slots and are fitted over the cross-pieces. The ends of the yoke, or yugo, were lashed to the horns of the oxen, and the center was lashed to the end of the pole, all done with rawhide straps. Probably they used fording places to cross the Rio Bravo, such as El Cantaro near Roma, when the river was low. Returning south they carried salt (from the salinas), cow-hides, and other local products. The oxcarts tended to move in caravans by Indians and renegades. Even so, entire trains of carts could be wiped out and the cargos stolen. The frontier was often a dangerous place. But the carretas, along with their slow but sturdy oxen and their drivers or carreteros, kept doing their humble yet vital job year after year. Not a spectacular or particularly romantic activity in historical terms, but essential in the growth of this region into today’s crossroads of international trade.
