Guests met the genius behind the Page Wine Cellars, who was on hand to share his love of wine, paired with Santa Fe Steakhouse’s culinary delights created by their very own Chef Jorge. What made this wine dinner so special was the perfect pairings, of course! You see, Bryan Page is a former professional chef who has cooked since the age of 16 and has worked at some well-known, localarea restaurants before deciding on a career change. As a result of his “food” background and perhaps his influence from the French wines, his wines are among some of the more food-friendly wines in the Napa Valley. At the dinner, guests found huge fruit bombs coming from Page Wine Cellars. Bryan crafts his wines so you discover the varietal characteristics rather than the oak.

The Edinburg Chamber of Commerce held their Public Affairs Luncheon at the Edinburg Conference Center at Renaissance. This event was the State of the University with keynote speaker Dr. Guy Bailey, president of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, giving important updates on the university. The purpose of the Public Affairs Luncheon is informing the community while involving and educating them. The event is also a great opportunity for business professionals to meet and network.

For the third consecutive year, the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District has received two National Blue Ribbon School recognitions.

The district has now earned a total of six national titles, which is more than any other school district or charter school in South Texas!

Magee Elementary Honored with Prestigious National Title I Distinguished School Award The National Association of Elementary and Secondary Education Act State Program Administrators (NAESPA) named Magee Elementary School a National Title I Distinguished School, recognizing the campus for its exceptional student achievement in 2018. The RGV Partnership collaborated with the U.S. Small Business Administration to host the RGV Small Business Awards Ceremony at the DoubleTree Suites

by Hilton. Multiple businesses and lenders were recognized for excelling in their industry. We have over 2.7 million small businesses in Texas that support close to 4.7 million small business employees; in fact, 9 out of 10 Texas businesses are small, and nearly half of all working Texans are employed by small businesses. At a press conference on Wednesday, May 1, at the Edinburg Conference Center at Renaissance, Doctors Hospital at Renaissance leadership publicized the advent of a new service – which it identifies as the only functioning Level 1 trauma emergency center in the region. In general, a trauma center is a hospital equipped and staffed to provide care for patients suffering from major traumatic injuries such as falls, motor vehicle collisions, or gunshot wounds. Additionally, DHR Health is the flagship teaching hospital for the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine, and encompasses a general acute hospital with a 24/7 Level III Trauma Facility, the only dedicated women’s hospital South of San Antonio, a rehabilitation hospital, a behavioral hospital, over 60 clinics Valley-wide, advanced cancer services, and the only transplant program in the Rio Grande Valley, to name a few.

The Consulate of Mexico in McAllen invited the community to “Tequileando”, an afternoon of celebration of the Mexican culture that will be held as part of the Cinco de Mayo festivities that are popular in the United States.

This year commemorates the 157th anniversary of the Batalla de Puebla.

In addition, there was a conference on tequila, a 100% Mexican product that is well-known worldwide and represents one of the most successful industries in our country. There was also an artistic program with Mexican music, folkloric ballet, tourist information and a photographic exhibition, “Estampas de la Puebla Épica”.

Over 450 guests poured into the McAllen Convention Center on May 7th, ready to support the special needs individuals that attend C.A.M.P. University at the popular Kentucky Derby themed gala & auction. As guests enjoyed perusing auction items, they had a chance to meet some of the CAMPers and be entered into the hat contest. Winners were announced following a horse race and just prior to dinner. As guests dined, they were able to learn more about what C.A.M.P. University does, what new and exciting things had happened since the last gala, and what the plans were for the upcoming year. Following dinner, a lively silent auction took place featuring trips, parties, high end clothing, and exclusive services.

Ending the night were the raffle drawings that included Apple products, a Rolex watch, fancy dining, out-oftown trips, and other fabulous prizes. It was a wonderfully exciting fundraiser with lots to do and lots of ways to win.

Ultimately the special needs adults of C.A.M.P. University were the big winners of the night as all money raised goes toward funding programs that help them develop life, social, and job skills, as well as opportunities to explore the world around them.

The Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas The Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas (HWNT) is a state-wide organization of individuals from diverse backgrounds who are committed to promoting the participation of women in public, corporate and civic arenas. HWNT seeks to advance the educational, cultural, social, legal and economic well-being of all women through a broader awareness of their role in society, business and family. Members strive to celebrate the positive image and values of the Hispanic culture.

HWNT is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and has become the premier Hispanic women’s organization in Texas. It was formed in 1986 by inviting

members of existing women’s and Hispanic groups from around the state to create an organization that would address issues unique to Hispanas.

Collaboration is the key to our success.

Since its inception, HWNT members have come together to sponsor programs designed to cultivate the social, cultural, legal and educational interests of Hispanic women. HWNT has sponsored and supported such activities as educational/mentoring programs; Women’s Rights to Vote Celebration, Hispanic Summit and Emerging Leaders Conference, HWNT’s State Conference, and intergenerational programs and achievement awards and ceremonies.

We believe that by women coming together in a spirit of collaboration, we can make a difference!

HWNT also established the Latinas in Progress Education and Scholarship Program©, which was developed to assist Latinas in attaining higher education.

HWNT provides education programs through the chapters for Latina high school students. These Latinas are provided with a scholarship opportunity, and there are no fees associated with this program.

The RGV Chapter was re-established in May 2014 commencing with 15 members.

Since then we have celebrated 4 women who have been named “Estrellas of Texas”, increased our membership to 60 members, given out $25,550.00 in scholarships to our “Latina’s in Progress” Program participants and have won the honor of hosting the 2019 State HWNT Convention. Our monthly meetings have extended to Cameron County with plans to include Starr County in the near future.

When attending a gala or social event, is it ok to ask for a to-go box for my food that I didn’t finish?

While we often want to take home leftover food from a social or business event, it is best not to. The event is really supposed to be about whoever is being celebrated and honored and less about the food. Enjoy the food, enjoy the company, and enjoy the event… just don’t take any leftover food home with you.

When the invitation says that attire is semi formal, what does that mean exactly?

What a great question! Semi formal attire is basically clothing that is dressier than you would normally wear to work but not quite as dressy as what you would wear to a formal event that required full length gowns and tuxedos.

The Hidalgo County Bar Foundation recently hosted the 2019 Annual Law Day Gala–Kentucky Derby Style at The Grand. The highlight of the evening was the announcement of the 2019 Law Day Award recipients. The prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to the Honorable Ramon Garcia, former Hidalgo County Judge and highly esteemed and respected criminal defense attorney, for his contribution to the legal field and most importantly to Hidalgo County and the State of Texas. Selected by their peers and HCBA leadership, the HCBA and State Bar of Texas Ethics Award went to Richard “Richie” Cantu; the John E. Cook Pro Bono Award went to Pablo Almaguer; the Liberty Bell Award went to the Honorable Hidalgo County Judge Richard Cortez; and the Outstanding Public Official Award went to McAllen Mayor James “Jim” Darling.

Winners of the 2019 Annual Law Day School Contests were also recognized at the Law Day Gala, and each one was presented with a scholarship. The Law Day Gala would not be as fun without fine dining and dancing to live music, and as a special treat, guests were able to place their bets for their favorite horse with “A Nite at the Races” event.

Featuring ten horse races, some lucky winners took home some wonderful gifts. In the tradition of the Kentucky Derby, ladies wore some of the prettiest and fanciest hats for the Derby Hat Contest!

Adding to the tensions were reports of German agents instigating the raids. German arms, equipment and advisers were involved in the Mexican Revolution from its beginning. In 1914, U.S. forces blockaded Vera Cruz and seized its custom house in an effort to prevent a German supply ship from unloading arms for Huerta’s armies. (It didn’t work; the ship went to another port and unloaded.)

Mexican troops and revolutionaries often carried Mauser rifles and pistols. After the battle at Norias, one dead raider was found wearing a medal identified as a German Iron Cross. With World War I raging in Europe, American fears of German influence in neighboring Mexico, already growing, were sharpened by events in South Texas.

That Germany wanted to create trouble between Mexico and the United States was long suspected.

Some believed that Germany was behind the Plan de San Diego, based on its wording (more typically German, they thought, than Mexican.) The same General Nafarrete who gave sanctuary to bandidos also was pro-German; reportedly he favored German efforts to stir trouble between the United States and Mexico, and may have organized the Norias raid. Reports circulated of raiders sparing the lives of prisoners who said they were Germans (alemánes), while others were shot. When the Zimmermann Telegram was made public early in 1917 it further infuriated Americans: Germany offered an alliance with Carranza to make war on the United States. Anti-German sentiment increased; Mercedes passed an ordinance forbidding German to be spoken within the city.

Meanwhile, Carranza sought recognition from the United States as the only lawful President of Mexico. He needed U.S. support also, to equip and arm his troops. Of the contending strong men, Carranza was most acceptable to Woodrow Wilson’s administration. In October 1915, Wilson recognized Carranza; one condition was that the raids into South Texas would stop. Soon, General Alfredo Ricault, a Mexican commander who supported Carranza, issued orders to shoot anyone crossing the Río Bravo into Mexico. The raids dwindled — then resurged again when U.S. troops invaded Mexico early in 1916.

With growing fears of a possible Mexican-German invasion, Washington prepared for war with Mexico and ordered a mobilization. Almost all state and Federal military forces were called up

March 1916. Angered by U.S. recognition of Carranza, Pancho Villa launched his attack across the border on Columbus, New Mexico. (Some say he targeted a merchant who’d taken Villa’s money for guns, then didn’t deliver them.) In response, Washington ordered the U.S. Army’s “Punitive Expedition” into Mexico to find Villa. President Carranza expressed outrage (though, secretly, he may have winked at the expedition as a means possibly to eliminate his old rival Villa). In June, Carranza sent troops to the Río Bravo. Mounted raiders again stormed into the Valley. General James Parker at Fort Brown gave an ultimatum to his opposite in Matamoros — stop the raids or U.S. troops would invade Mexico. The raids again tapered off. By mid-1916 the “bandit raid era” was largely ended.

Other encampments stretched from Texas to California. In the months ahead, infantry, cavalry and artillery gained valuable field experience that would serve them later on battlefields in France.
