e are delighted to welcome you to the launch issue of a specialist wedding magazine that fills an important gap on the Costa del Sol. There are few places in the world that can offer the whole wedding experience, from fun-filled hen’s night to memorable beachside ceremony and reception, and even a varied choice of romantic honeymoon destinations. F TO F O S HAT Accessorize have a range of bags and hair accessories that will help you achieve the perfect look, be it a very smart or a relaxed casual wedding. This classic black clutch will go with any colour and complement every outfit, and will look chic during the day and give you a bit a of pizzazz for the evening celebrations; while this multi-coloured bag will jazz up an outfit that is all one-coloured, and allow you to match shoes with the bag easily. Wearing a hat to a wedding is not something guests will always want to do, as women find it difficult to sort out previously coiffed hair at the ceremony. A great alternative is to wear a fascinator: a hairpiece that can easily be taken off after the ceremony or meal. There are many types and colours available, which mean you will always find one to complement an outfit. www.accessorize.com

CROWNING GLORY Celebrity hairdresser of the year Tara Smith has worked with Hollywood heavyweights such as Demi Moore, Kevin Spacey, Neve Campbell and Anna Friel… efore you even start considering your bridal hairstyle, you need to make sure your hair is in the best condition possible. There is no point in having a showstopping up-do if your hair is dry, split and damaged. You want the shiny, glossy look that only comes from healthy hair. If your hair feels good – not just looks good, but feels good – you are going to feel like a million dollars.
B
Plan of action One to two months before the event start having bi-weekly deep conditioning treatments. This can be done at home or in your local hairdressers. The bonus of having a professional salon treatment is the great head massage that accompanies it, perfect for dissolving all that pre-wedding stress.
Hair care Change all your products to sulphate-free. Harsh chemical sulphates are very drying and can damage hair follicles. Also, use my base coat serum every day. This is a foundation primer for every hair type. This serum with Borage oil has the highest level of Gamma Linolenic Acid of any common plant species, therefore providing the foundation for good-looking hair
hair. If you are a vegetarian and not getting protein from animal foods, this needs to be compensated by choosing the right foods to eat. You need to think about investing in the suitable vitamins and super greens like kelp and seaweed, for example.
Over processed hair For hair that is irreparable, I am afraid the only option is to cut it off and start again. This doesn’t need to be the end of the world as you can create volume and length with hair extensions. I highly recommend Great Lengths. They use only the finest 100 per cent human hair of guaranteed origin and ethicality. Most brides will need hairpieces to create the style of their dreams; you just get to keep yours in. G In the weeks leading up to your wedding, steam your face with full fat milk. This is great for brightening dry skin and helping clear impurities from the pores. G For super smooth legs on the day use a rich moisturiser like Jergens Ultra Smoothing to shave your legs. It’s a nice thick cream so will avoid irritation and doesn’t need to be rinsed off afterwards; it can be just worked in to moisturise. G On the morning of your wedding, to avoid any irritation at all to your skin, use a moisturiser as a cleanser. A great option for this is Kiehls Ultra Facial Cream as it is nice and light. G Prepare the skin on your body for your wedding day by exfoliating your skin three times a week. I love mixing olive oil and brown sugar as an economical, natural body scrub. The combination gets rid of dead, dull skin cells and moisturises at the same time. G Sooth spots by dabbing honey onto them. I find its natural antiseptic qualities help heal my spots faster than many chemicalbased treatments, and it’s something I always have in the kitchen cupboard.

G Keep it simple: do not lose who you are under layers of make-up you would not usually wear. G Always use waterproof mascara.
G Use a pre base under foundation (like Ruby & Millie’s Pre Base, £9) to ensure coverage remains all day. G Make sure foundation always blends and matches with your neckline. G A flush of colour to the cheek always works to brighten the skin. G Use eye lash curlers to open the eyes. G Always ensure that eyebrows are neat – and to create a frame to the face.
G Do not wear dark or red lipstick; it can make a real mess when it comes to the “kiss the bride” bit. G Put on your base in advance and have a relaxing bath with your base on. The steam from a bath makes the base settle in and look more natural.

ACHIEVING THE that suits you, wows your fiancée and won’t cause you any stress on the day. Questions, in fact, that I never would have thought of, like – where is the ceremony being held; what is the dress like; are you wearing heels; if so, how high; how tall is the groom… and much more. The reasoning behind this is that all of these factors make a huge difference to what the overall look is like; for example, you cannot have big hair if you have very high heels and a short groom – the pictures

reparing for a wedding is one of the most, if not the most, stressful things a woman has to do. From the perfect dress to the perfect venue, everything must go without a hitch, so the last thing she needs to worry about is her hair and make-up. This is where Reflections in Nueva Andalucía comes in. They can preen, primp and pamper you before the day and on the day itself so that, as you walk
38
CONFETI
down the aisle to your future husband, murmurs about you being the most beautiful bride really will be true. Preparing for your overall look on the day is crucial – making sure you have everything you need to make the day go off without a hitch is the most important thing and this is where the experience of the team at Reflections really makes a difference. They suggest a trial run of the hair and make-up about a month before the actual wedding and there are many questions that are asked at this trial to make sure your look is one
will not be flattering, and the future husband may have that Tom Cruise to Nicole Kidman feeling (and we all know how that marriage ended). The colour team at Reflections, headed by celebrity colourist Jonathon Yeadon, recommend having your hair coloured about a week before, giving the colour time to settle and you to get used to it. The same is suggested for the cut; especially if you are changing the look because, if anything (God forbid) went wrong, you would have enough time to sort it out. Ultimately the hair and
RIGHT LOOK FOR YOU number of problems could arise – getting burnt, strap marks and dry skin leading to caked makeup. Think of the pictures that will be on your mantelpiece for life…. This wedding look created by Reflections is a softer appearance with an ‘80s twist; curls cascade down the right hand side of her face with soft make-up enhancing her features. Make-up tones are discussed during the trial, taking into account how the bride does her make-up every day and what time of day the wedding is taking place – evening make-up can be a little heavier on the eyes. For those of you, who like me, have the thinnest hair in the world help is at hand to achieve this beautiful look – hair pieces and extensions. Keep in mind that it could take time to order the extra hair for the ceremony and you will want it for the trial, and it really couldn’t be easier. Lastly, with all these important preparations to make you look your best, there will be two of you in those photos so send your man in two days before the
make-up need to match the style of wedding so that everything complements each other. Reflections also prepare the rest of you for the most important day of your life: facials need to take place a week before the day in case of breakouts, not just every bride’s, but every woman’s nightmare; while nails, if manicured, can be done on the day but for acrylics a couple of days before.
Another major bridal dilemma, especially when marrying by the sea, is “to tan or not to tan”. Reflections suggest that, if you do decide to have a spray tan, have one before your wedding day as different brands affect skin differently, and to bear this in mind when having your trial make-up done as this will be greatly affected by a different skin tone. Also recommended is to stay away from real sun as a
wedding to get his hair cut too. And for those men who aren’t afraid of a little pampering – a manicure wouldn’t hurt either. Reflections is a one-stop beauty salon that takes the stress out of a lot of preparation, leaving you looking perfect for the man of your dreams. This look was created by Vera Keinanen – hair; Hildur ‘Arnad’ottir – make-up; and Kristina Manners – nails.

A prepared couple will look confident, at ease and comfortable with each other. It doesn’t need to be a show; even something simple will work as long as it looks natural,” explains the ballroom and Latin American dance teacher. This is why there has been a surge in the number of couples attending lessons before their big day. “Each couple I teach are different, so I will always work at their pace. SHAPE UP Your wedding photos last a lifetime, which just adds to the pressure for a bride to look her best on her big day. Any bride will tell you it’s not just their face that needs to look perfect but also their body. This can seem completely overwhelming but help is at hand. With a little time and investment you can achieve the look that you have always wished for. “All brides want to look elegant,” explains top personal trainer Sean McShea. “This will never happen if you have bad posture, which 44

most of us do. I work with brides to create a long, lean look, perfect for their photos.” If you think about the average cost of a wedding (€20,000) the hiring of a personal trainer a few months before the event doesn’t seem so much of an indulgence. “After a consultation I create a nutritional, lifestyle and exercise routine suitable for creating a sculptured body. Even the bride’s back needs to be taken into account as it is the area that all the guests see during the church ceremony. This, teamed with the trend for plunging dresses at the back, means good posture and a toned back is important. However, I do work on the whole body, so that you do not end up with some toned areas and others not. The end result is the perfect beach body, ready for your honeymoon.

WEDDING HOTEL VILLA PADIERNA, LOS FLAMINGOS, ESTEPONA
O
ne of the most prestigious hotels on the Coast, Villa Padierna really is a cut above the rest. It is particularly suited to those couples who want to celebrate their blessing at the same venue as their reception, as there is a fantastic amphitheatre purpose-built for a theatrical and unforgettable ceremony. The rooms are stunning and the service impeccable, which can’t be said for every five-star resort in the area! This is a venue suited to a couple who want real class and glamour on their wedding day. The hotel is well designed for weddings: there is a separate wing and enclosed terrace and bar area for events so the hotels’ other guests are kept away from the festivities. This is such an important factor when choosing a hotel venue for your wedding. (www.hotelvillapadierna.com)

VENUES
Getting married on the Costa del Sol is becoming more popular year by year, due to excellent airline links to the UK and Ireland, 350 days of sunshine a year and good value for money. While wedding costs back home are escalating, you can still celebrate your special day here in any of the glamorous and exceptional venues that the Coast has to offer, at a fraction of the price. Wedding planning should be an exciting, enjoyable and non-stressful process culminating in a wedding day infused with fun, laughter and special Andalucian sunshine. Whether you are looking for a Catholic ceremony in a traditional whitewashed Spanish church, cocktails on the beach as the sun goes down or taking over your very own luxury villa, there is something on the Coast to suit everyone. Having organised hundreds of weddings here over the years, we have detailed some of the venues that stand out by miles...

RESTAURANT TIKITANO, ESTEPONA
A
perennial favourite… you can’t beat the Tikitano for its amazing beachside location. Styled like a Polynesian beach hut, this venue offers a sense of chic dining that is quite rare on the Coast. Specialising in events, the restaurant can be taken over exclusively and the team can
help you design your perfect day down to the last detail. Fireworks, live bands, cocktails and canapés looking over the Mediterranean to views of Gibraltar and Africa… this is the perfect location for those who come to Spain to be by the sea. (www.tikitano.com)

FINCA LA CONCEPCION, MARBELLA ust five minutes from Puerto Banús, this venue is truly breathtaking and probably the most exclusive on the Coast: an enormous private finca that is guaranteed to give you the wow factor you won’t find in any run-of-the-mill hotel or restaurant. Characterised by tropical plants, a majestic fountain, huge swimming pool and beautiful marquees, it prompts many guests to gasp as soon as they walk through the entrance. At night the palm trees are spot lit and there are twinkling lanterns, candles and fire torches everywhere you look. The real beauty of this place is the feeling of exclusivity, as the grounds are all yours for the night, with no one looking on. While this venue is expensive to hire on a weekend, a week-day wedding is available at less than half the normal rate and allows anyone to experience a fabulous venue at an achievable price. CORTIJO LA PERDIZ, CANCELADA, ESTEPONA robably the most important aspect to a wedding is maintaining a feeling of exclusivity. There is nothing worse than holding your ceremony in a large hotel while people in their swimming costumes are looking on. Hiring your own private villa for the day or for the week is the perfect way to keep things completely private – even better when you have contracted a full in-house catering service with food, equipment, linens and waiters all-inclusive, so there is no extra work in it for you. This is such a popular option now as it affords the couple a way to stretch the festivities out over a few days, with many opting to cater a barbecue or pool party the day before or after the wedding. It also allows you complete flexibility in terms of timing, food, decoration and entertainment, as you do not have to follow the rules and regulations of a hotel or restaurant. Cortijo La Perdiz is the perfect setting to hold a wedding. A traditional Spanish cortijo-style house, it has a beautiful inner courtyard ideally suited for a cocktail reception. The gardens house a pool, lake and tennis court, and provide a breathtaking setting for the reception. At night it can be filled with fairy lights, floating candles and lanterns to provide a truly magical and romantic atmosphere. The villa can be hired by the day as well as by the week and has no near neighbours so, unlike most venues on the Coast, the party can go on all night!

A word of warning though: don’t rely on simple internet research to find your perfect venue as many websites do not do the venues justice. Make an appointment with a wedding planner and come out for some site visits, so you can see these places in person, or just email for some no-strings advice, pricing and images.

ONFETI chooses... By Trish Dynes
Capturing the moment Weddings require an intuitive sensitivity for the situation, and outstanding photographic technical competency. There are no second chances. You are going to entrust to your chosen wedding photographer the most precious time of your lives and in so doing you are going to create a strong partnership, if only for a fleeting moment. When you consider the cost of the entire wedding, the cost of professional photography generally comes to approximately 12 per cent of the wedding budget. Once you have decided on your budget be prepared to pay a little more for those unexpected extras that might arise.
N
ow you can begin to look for the best photographer that you can afford. Choose a photographer that you feel comfortable with and check if he/she is available (the best photographers get booked up early) and, if you’re convinced that what they offer is worth the price, make the commitment, pay the deposit and rest assured that this will be one of the best and most intelligent decisions you will make in planning your wedding! Spain is a great choice when hosting a memorable occasion and has something to offer everyone. On average there are 350 days of sunshine a year and, although there is no guarantee that the sun will shine on your day, there is certainly much less chance of rain. If you are using one of the many excellent wedding planners on the Costa del Sol and Gibraltar they can point you in the direction of several tried and trusted photographers, but be sure to widen your search by checking the internet to see which photographers’ styles match up with your ideas of a perfect portfolio of pictures. If you live outside Spain check out local photographers who are prepared to travel for your special day. This gives you a chance to interview at least one photographer face to face before you travel.

A good photographer will make even a rainy day look better so try to interview at least three wedding photographers and talk to them about their philosophy with regards to the most important day of your life because you are going to remember your wedding day through the eyes, heart and talent of your photographer. Don’t be afraid to ask the questions that are important to you, questions that will reassure you that your day will not come back to haunt you. Are you looking for something different in your wedding photography? Every photographer has his or her own unique style. Look for a style of photography that speaks to you. A good wedding photographer should have the ability to truly capture mood, emotion and feelings within his/her photographs. Experience is important, not just for the quality of photograph but also to ensure that your photographer knows how to professionally conduct himself on the job and to deal with the intensity of a wedding. An experienced wedding photographer will know how to position himself without becoming a distraction to your guests while taking photos, and should also know how to work in harmony with a videographer. Whoever you choose make sure that they are able to keep up with the pace of
your wedding day and the atmosphere of excitement and emotion swirling around them as they work. Most importantly, they will know precisely how to capture that emotion so it can be preserved for a lifetime. A professional wedding photographer must earn your trust and enter into very personal relationships with you, a relationship that might only last several hours but the results will last forever in your wedding albums, in framed prints that hang on your walls or stand proudly framed on your dresser, desktops and in your parents’ homes. The photographer just for you is out there so take your time and choose wisely.
JEREMY STANDLEY
Cj HADLOW
JEREMY STANDLEY Jeremy Standley is an international creative documentary style wedding and portrait photographer. Every wedding is a very unique event and his aim is to creatively capture every moment that makes your day so incredible. He absolutely loves what he does. “Many couples are happy for a friend or relative to capture their day while others prefer to hire a professional based on a recommendation by a wedding planner or from direct internet contact. Finding the right person to capture this special day is a big deal and the decision should not be taken lightly. In my experience the most important factors when choosing are taste and budget. Budget for most people is a large part of the deciding factor; however, price does not always mean quality so go with your gut instinct to ensure some great memories of your day. I always make sure that my clients have the best photography their budget can buy, resulting in an album full of unique, creative imagery and exceptional presentation. As I am based in Spain, 95 per cent of my clients come from overseas, primarily Ireland, UK and the US along with many other nationalities. This distance does not prevent me from developing a good relationship with clients no matter where in the world they are. I think the photographer/client relationship is incredibly important and where possible I like to meet my clients several times prior to the wedding. In the meantime I encourage my clients to view as much of my work as possible prior to meeting with me so they decide on which style suits them best. I think it is so important for every couple to identify their
priorities and then divide their requirements into must-have shots and those that are incidental. Some of the arrangements for these shots can be made during a prewedding shoot, which is not only an ideal way for my clients to relax and a great way for us to get to know each other better but also provides me with a fun way for me to present them with some really unique images. It is critical for me to have a total understanding of the agreement I have made with the couple; therefore everything we have discussed and some of the things we may not have got round to must be in writing, so I like all of my clients to sign a contract. This will lay out all aspects of the services provided and everything from payment policies to cancellation policies. I have a passion for wedding photography which allows me to be a guest at the celebration of the most important day of their lives. It allows me to capture the feeling and emotion, and that is something that requires trust from both parties: for the client to be relaxed and have the knowledge that they will be presented with unique and exceptional imagery, and also for the photographer to respect this, being discreet and also able to capture unique imagery. I think the perfect client/ photographer relationship is one based on trust and expectation.

CJ HADLOW CJ Hadlow is a talented photographer from the UK who has made an impressive mark in Marbella. She brings to her wedding work a broad range of expertise, including specialist experience as a fashion photographer. “My aim when I meet the couple is to gain a rapport so I can capture their wedding story in the best possible way through a mixture of reportage and contemporary shots. A prewedding or engagement shoot is the best way for a couple to get to know me and we can start to build a great working relationship and I can discover their expectations and desires. Armed with what I have learned about the couple and a clear understanding of what they want, I can finalise my plans for the big day. These plans are made based on a programme for the day and the agreed upon styles and special requests. On the morning of the wedding I start photographing the bride and bridesmaids while they are getting ready – this captures the build up and excitement on the day. I pay attention to all the little things that have been given a lot of thought such as the shoes, jewellery, tiara, etc. As a woman I have an advantage in putting the girls at their ease while they are dressing and putting the final touches to their make-up. I take this opportunity to photograph the floral arrangements while they are fresh from delivery. I also photograph the invitations – items that are an expensive outlay but often end up forgotten in a drawer. From morning until night it is my aim to capture the spirit, love and general atmosphere of the

whole day in order to create a story of the wedding celebrations, and produce images with personality. Although the day is really all about the bride and groom it’s also about the people who love them. I like to fade into the background so that people are unaware of the camera and I can catch them in unique unguarded moments. However, unlike the fly on the wall approach of many documentaries I have developed the skill of knowing what will come next and can anticipate or predict the shots. For the romantic shots I manipulate the pose and lighting in the hope of idealising the shot. Of course, there must be some formal shots such as the bride and groom with their parents or a whole group shot. Today’s couples also want to see the whole of their wedding day including rings, table settings, champagne and glasses and, of course, the cake. Many photographers feel blighted by guests who get in the way of the shots by taking their own pictures and distracting the photographer from what he (or she) perceives to be his domain. You will find that in a few of my wedding photos there are guests taking photos of the bride and groom; I see this as part of the day and a great photo opportunity. So if someone else wants to get a few snaps for their mantelpiece that really isn’t a problem as it is all part of the fun of the day.”
DAVID TOMS Moments are forever changing and David Toms has an in-built talent to capture the moment. Equally at ease with people of all nationalities, he has been a witness to a great many colourful traditions, from Irish and English weddings to northern European, Spanish, Gibraltarian and Indian ones. “I have learnt the trade the traditional way through lots of hard work, spending many hours in the dark room supporting some of the world’s top photographers such as Roy Snell, who taught me all there is to know about black and white photography, a medium that is still popular for wedding photography. Wedding photography has changed so much over recent years, with many styles, ranging from traditional to contemporary and reportage sometimes known as photojournalism. With this in mind, it is important that you choose a style that not only suits you but also tells the story of your wedding day and is presented in a stunning way. For me the day is about love, passion, fashion, beauty, colour and sheer joy. In capturing these
moments I use a long lens so that I am not seen until I need to be, so that the styles are natural and the shots are real. Reportage has been around much longer than you would think and I have been using this documentary style for many years. It is an informal method of capturing the unrehearsed moments of your wedding day; photography that shows the spontaneous emotions of you and your guests having fun as your day unfolds. An experienced photographer has not only a trained eye: he or she also should have the ability to predict the next shot in order to get the best candid shot possible. I am a great believer in natural, unforced images in which people appear relaxed and at ease. Guests will not have to wait for hours while I take hundreds of photos of the bride and groom on their way to the reception. Instead, I’ll photograph them as they make their way, preferring to shoot a series of images when they look relaxed and happy. Traditional wedding photography is still used but often in conjunction with other styles. The shots are usually scripted and the style captures an intense moment or look between the bride and groom that will be captured forever in a skilfully posed photo that will take pride of place on the parents’ sideboards. Contemporary/artistic photography is when the photographer finds settings where the lighting is good and the backgrounds beautiful and then photographs the bride and groom in a more contrived or idealised setting – when done properly the results can be stunning. These are the pictures that grab people’s attention simply because they look like they have come from the glossy magazines. Digital photo editing has removed the limits of what was previously possible in wedding photography and allows the photographer to artistically manipulate the images.”

Five-star Costa wedding for childhood sweethearts Sean McShea and Lia Mullins first met when they were four years old, started school together on the same day and were in the same class. They became childhood sweethearts and lived just a few doors from each other in Dublin. Their personal “fairytale” had a momentary setback when they parted as teenagers and Lia moved abroad for her dance career, but they met again four years ago and – in a magical happy ending (or new beginning!) – they married on 21 June in the five-star setting of the Kempinski Hotel. “It was the best day of our lives,” they recall. “We had so much fun and never felt the stress at all. We want to do it again, ha ha!” The couple were married in the gardens, with a violinist playing. This was followed by a reception for guests in the gardens, to the accompaniment of a Spanish guitar; while a pianist played during the meal, served in the outdoor restaurant. Later, guests were entertained by the Del Rico band, whose members flew over from LA especially for the wedding. At midnight everyone moved inside, where a Cuban band provided entertainment till the early hours. Eighty guests flew over for the wedding from Ireland, the UK and the US. Wedding planner Heather Sadtler says: I get asked all the time what are the most important elements for a successful wedding and I always say live music is one of them. There are many fantastic bands on the Coast and I would particularly recommend the Costa Band – see www.ppmusicproductions.com for more information.

CHICONOMICS TOP TIPS FROM
CONFETI Photos Conrad C. Jones
In this regular feature our team of wedding experts will reveal their thrifty wedding ideas. Here are some of the best ways to stretch your budget without compromising on style.
married 6.Getting now Well, not right this minute but by getting married in winter you can benefit from reduced prices. Another option is to tie the knot mid-week as many reception venues will offer a discount.
1. Do your own make-up
Pop down to your local MAC or Bobbi Brown counter and have a complementary make-over. Ask them to teach you how to recreate the look for your big day.
2.High street heaven
There are stunning bridesmaids’ dresses on the high street; think Monsoon and Wallis. Try to obtain them in the seasonal sales for an even bigger saving. You can always have them altered to create the perfect fit.
3.Fun DIY
“Weddings will never be cheap but we looked into costings all the way along,” says mother of the bride Gill Johnson. “It's just a case of shopping about and eventually you find things; even things like the chair covers for the reception dinner just fall into place. But the most fun was making our own invitations to match the colour scheme, name place cards, table lists, order of service, table decorations and a card box for people to post their wedding cards in (for safety as some may contain money!). It was lots of fun.”

4.Try someone new
Find out about new suppliers in the area. They will often give you a discount to gain more experience and to get their name out there. They will be working on gaining a good reputation so will probably be as good as any of the experienced ones.
5.Save the planet
You can save on postage by going to pingg.com; where you are able to create save-the-date emails. This site allows you to choose a template and upload photos.
7. Help yourself
“We had a buffet and it went down really well with the guests,” says Carly Gurney, 28. “This way you need less waiting staff, making the costs even lower. We still had a seating plan, which gave it the same feel as every other wedding.”

SAY IT WITH FLOWERS

CONFETI
According to Maxine Bygraves, from Maxine4Flowers: “The new trends are all to do with texture, combining several different types of flowers in one colour or building colour upon colour. Soft and structural blooms, blooms like Alstromeria, small flowers to break up larger blooms and, of course, the often forgotten perfumed flowers that will sigh out their scent as the bride walks down the aisle. “A trend that has been going for some time, and will certainly be even more popular this year, is embellishing the bouquets. Masses of opportunity for creativity and individuality here; beads and diamante lace will all have an impact. A stunning faux or family heirloom brooch can be attached to the ribbon on the bouquet. More often nowadays a consistent colour theme can be run boldly through the bridal bouquet, bridesmaids, buttonholes, church and venue, including invitations and chair covers, to make this the most memorable day for the bridal party and guests.” Maxine4Flowers: (34) 626 784 278; maxine4flowers.com
Laura Charles, director of Reviva Weddings, reveals: “The key statement for 2010 wedding trends is ‘simplicity’. Everyone is on a budget and there is certainly a simplifying of weddings, and today’s brides are looking for a more natural look for their wedding flowers. “Big bling has been replaced by relaxed eco chic and the flower power of the vintage 1960s hippy spirit. With many wedding dresses now beautifully decorated with elaborate details and emphasis on the hips, using a simple and small hand tie compliments the dresses without overpowering them. “Brides are becoming more adventurous with colours as vintage flower power presents the fresh, new relaxed look. Gone are the days of overpowering floral arrangements. Jam jars, jugs and quirky containers combined with bright, energised floral colours that evoke optimism and exuberance, lemonade yellows, pear greens, vibrant corals and lavender are all big trends for 2010 weddings.” Reviva Weddings: (34) 618 021 172; reviva-weddings.com Reviva Weddings

Ultimately a wedding belongs to the bride and groom, so their day should reflect their tastes and traditions. However, if you want to stay in line with next year’s top floral trends, here is what the experts say……
Maxine4Flowers
Lisa Lamrani, director of Exclusive Events, says: When it comes to choosing your wedding flowers and colour scheme for 2010, my advice is to firstly consider your venue. If you’re on a budget and don’t want to go all out on completely transforming the space then choose a scheme that complements the surrounding areas. Think ‘BIG’. Less is definitely not more when it comes to next year’s trends, but keep it elegant using variations of the same colour. “If you have a blank canvas, on the other hand, then vibrant, bold, bright colours are back in a big way. Colours are great for creating your own grand, spectacular, dramatic statement. This is where, by having Exclusive Events on board, you can turn your dreams into reality without any stress. Colour palettes of white and silver, accented with shimmer, showcase another key look. Go for over-thetop orchid centrepieces to create that wow factor. Add tea light candles to set the scene when night falls, to create a warm and cosy atmosphere. “For the bouquet, why not stick to one flower type for a look of elegance. Stephanoitis or pure white calla lilies are perfectly complemented by white satin ribbon and the stylish design picked out with pearl pins. Elegant, simple, sophisticated glamour... Bring in the bling! Add details such as crystals and pearls for a dramatic fairytale look. Think jewellery is just for you to wear? Everything from brooches to pearls are being used to make bouquets beautiful, and they make fabulous keepsake gifts for bridesmaids to use year-round.” Exclusive Events: Tel. ONFETI looks ahead... By Trish Dynes
A romantic retreat Most newlyweds can’t afford to redecorate their entire house or apartment and often pay most attention to the room where the magic happens – the bedroom. A new project for the two of you will help chase away those post wedding blues and help you bond at the beginning of your life together. Decorating a bedroom for two instead of one will teach you to compromise on the little things and will stand you in good stead when compromises are needed on the bigger issues of married life.
M
any brides dream of a romantic bedroom, one that speaks to their senses and our dreams. The romantic bedroom epitomizes sensual comfort, luxury, and voluptuous surroundings. It is a sanctuary where you both can retreat after a hectic day to a private haven of peace and sensuality. However, romantic bedrooms do not have to be pink and frilly. Before you can create your ideal romantic bedroom, you will need to analyse your romantic bedroom style. After all, romance means different things to different people, depending on whether you love fairy tale romance, are a classic romantic or a thoroughly modern girl with more than romance on your mind. If you’ve always dreamed of Prince Charming whisking you away to a world where love is everlasting, then the flowers and toile of yesteryear are the perfect bedroom additions. Perhaps you get all mushy inside at the thought of candlelight dinners and sunset strolls in the park; all the simple moments that make for true love are epitomized in simple white linens, ruffled comforters and pleated sheets. This style says bold, in your face designs such as wild print linens or flirty floral sets to keep the passion in the bedroom. For some couples the ultimate in beds for romance is the canopy bed. If you already have a bed you love you can create a canopy by attaching yards of fabric in a rosette or on a hoop to the wall behind the bed. You can find pictures and
Even superstars such as Kylie Minogue are lending their names to stylish bedding that is eminently affordable in the high street, in popular catalogues and on-line. Most of these bedsets have matching pillows and cushions so you can prop an assortment of decorative pillows in front of your sleeping pillows. Decorative pillows include soft squashy ones for comfort, and boudoir and neck-roll for a variety in sizes to add visual interest, texture, dimension, and warmth. Whatever bedding you choose should be irresistible. Your bed should look warm with comfortable quilts and have a delicious jump in, curl up, and get comfy look. However, you want to examples of how to create this type ensure that your mattress does of canopy by searching for ideas on not squeak, as a noisy and uncomfortable bed is definitely a the internet. Silk and satin sheets may appeal to you but don’t forget they have to be dry-cleaned; a good alternative is Egyptian satinised cotton in 300 TPI count to give a lovely soft feel. Replace your lights to all lowwattage frosted or soft-light bulbs. Not only will these bulbs save you money on your electric bill, but they will also give you softer light and help to eliminate dark shadows. Track lighting will give you control by moving the globes to illuminate certain areas and to
darken others. Install recessed lighting to free up valuable space that can be better used for other things than table or floor lamps. Dimmers can add a sense of romance to bedrooms and at the same time you have more control of your lighting. Use mirrors in your bedrooms to reflect the light in the room. Reflecting the light is sometimes the only option if a bedroom has only just a ceiling light fixture and limited electrical outlets. Place the mirrors in areas where they will
reflect the light from your lamps or track lighting. Nothing adds more romance than a set of lighted candles because they evoke feelings of warmth and sensuality. You can select from scented or unscented candles and they come in different sizes and shapes, There are so many exotic scents to choose from so be sure to choose your scented candles together – what works for you may not work for your spouse. A floating candle looks especially romantic
because you can add rose petals to the water and the combination of the flickering light against the crystal bowl, along with the shadows it creates, is very romantic. Remember to snuff all the candles out before you snuggle down to sleep in your lover’s arms. A romantic bedroom would not be complete without a sweet smelling aroma. Since scent affects mood, it’s one more fabulous idea to consider. You can sprinkle some scented powder on CONFETI

your sheets to give them that special fragrance. Other ways include placing scented sachets of lavender under your pillow or using linen sprays made from natural essential oils in vanilla, chamomile, mint, rosemary/ lavender, eucalyptus/spearmint, and strawberries and cream scents. But don’t overdo it – try to co-ordinate your fragrances with your massage oils as too many scents can become cloying and your bedroom will end up smelling like the perfume department in El Corte Inglés. Accessories that will help your bedroom feel more romantic include flowers, decorative mirrors, and framed artwork. One accessory you definitely do not need is a television, as there is no need for distractions in the bedroom. To add extra warmth and richness to your romantic bedroom, place a rug on the floor. You will be amazed at how much beauty and warmth a rug will add and it is a great way to make your room feel cosier. And as a final touch don’t forget the champagne (or cava) and install a cordless wine chiller. Sparkling champagne and a couple of flutes will help complete your romantic setting and you may just find yourself taking romantic weekend breaks in your own romantic hideaway just down the hall. ONFETI parties... By Giles Brown
S TA G S A N D Once upon a time, long ago, Puerto Banús was an exclusive jet set hangout where the beautiful people did beautiful things to each other, probably over a game of backgammon and to a soundtrack of Roxy Music and 10 CC. As this was in the days before mobile phones and the internet, you just pinned a note to the cork board at Sinatra’s or Salduba, and all the great parties took place at someone’s private villa in the hills.
T
hings are a little bit different today… The combination of cheap flights, year-round sunshine and a fairly tolerant attitude to tourists has made Marbella, and Puerto Banús in particular, one of the most indemand destinations for stag nights, surpassing even Dublin in popularity. It’s not difficult to see why, as the town offers beer, golf, beer, water sports, beer, karting, beer, nightlife. And did I mention the beer? Marbella has been on a bit of a culture drive this year with its Opera Festival, Art Festival and Film Festival, and is also keen to stress the culinary delights that await the gourmet at restaurants such as Novelli’s at the Sisu Boutique Hotel and Dani Garcia’s award-winning Calima Restaurant at the Hotel Don Pepe. But the typical stag is unlikely to be seduced by the charms of Marbella’s Bonsai Tree Museum. Head down to Puerto Banús on any weekend and you’ll realise that it’s become the stag and hen capital of Europe, as gangs of party-goers, normally dressed as nuns, Romans, cowgirls or a combination of all three, are out and about enjoying someone’s last 76
CONFETI
night of freedom. In reality it’s probably some weeks before the real last night of freedom, as any perspective bride or groom in Banús on a stag night is likely to down such a fearsome combination of slippery nipples, tequila slammers, flaming sambucas and, last but certainly not least, the mighty Jaegermeister, that the following morning he’s unlikely to remember his name, who he is marrying or why he woke up in his hotel room wearing a gorilla outfit… But I‘ll come to the nightlife later. There’s really not much point in coming to a stag in Marbella if all you’re going to do is spend every daylight hour nursing a hangover and groaning silently to yourself. Take my hard-earned advice: get a full English or Bloody Mary down your throat and get out there! Golf is always going to be a safe option but, let’s face it, if you are feeling the effects of the night before, it’s going to take some effort to hold the club steady, never mind facing the challenges of world famous courses such as Valderrama, Finca Cortesín or Las Brisas. Perhaps a more gentle nine holes in the morning is a better proposition, and there are
excellent courses such as Greenlife Golf and Magna Marbella, both of which boast clubhouses perfect for a postround pick-me-up. Of course, being next to the Mediterranean, there is also a great range of water-based activities available. Boat charters are a popular option and the sea is perfect for blowing out the cobwebs. None other than Prince Philip described yachting as “the only sport one can do with a hangover” and, if you’re feeling particularly rough, you can always be sick over the side. Anything from luxury yachts to speed boats, jet skis and catamarans can be hired, and what activities you get up to are up to you. There’s big game fishing, whale and dolphin watching, waterskiing, being dragged behind your boat on an inflatable (or “shark baiting”, as I like to call it) and even, ahem, “unlimited lap dancing” advertised on some charters. Back on dry land, and if you fancy yourself as a bit of a Button, Hamilton or (shudder) Schumacher, then there are plenty of options available. If you want to cruise the Golden Mile in a supercar there are several VIP car companies who can hire you
anything from a Ferrari to a Hummer. If you want to thrash around the track there’s carting on Funny Beach or you can head up to one of the biggest tracks in Europe at Karting Campillos, 40 minutes from Málaga. And if you really want a no-holds-barred motor sport experience, then Race Resort Ascari is an hour up the Ronda road. Off-road buggies, karts and a variety of racing cars are available for the heavy of foot and wallet, all on a purpose-built private track! Of course, you might take the opportunity to leap on a quad or take a guided jeep safari in the hills around Marbella, and there are several action and adventure specialists who can offer you kayaking, canoeing and gorge descents. And, if you really want to take out your frustrations on your fellow stag party members, you can always sign up for a day of paintballing. I haven’t been paintballing for years, since a good friend lobbed a paint grenade into the back of the van I was getting changed in and locked the doors, I won’t paint you a graphic picture, but I had powdered paint falling out of my person for days after. The day’s activities over, it’s

time to hit Puerto Banús’ fabled nightlife. It may help at this point to have booked a hotel that is used to stag and hen nights and other group tours. I checked into a well-known hotel in Banús on a rugby tour to be greeted by a party of nuns on the run, and a guy wearing purple lame hot pants and on roller skates glided past me in the lobby. The poor barmen, who were serving pints at 8 am, had what Vietnam vets would recognise as the “Thousand Yard Stare” – men who had looked into the abyss and been forever changed by the horror that they had seen… From there the first stop is undoubtedly the Salduba/Sinatra corner, where the stag group can check out the super yachts and drool over the passing supercars and occasional super model. After a couple of eye-wateringly expensive San Miguels, the crowds
then head down to the second line of Banús, normally tempted by smooth-tongued PR girls promising free shots. This strip of Irish bars, sports bars and 2x1 bars sprung up in the late ‘80s and is the Stag Party Ground Zero as “overrefreshed” party-goers get into turbo celebration mode, with kamikaze shot-drinking, mass impromptu karaoke and uncoordinated dancing. Good thing you’ll have little memory the next morning, as you’ll probably have heard “Tonight’s Gonna Be a Good Night” at least 50 times. And you’ll be soooooooo glad that that was your last night of freedom! Honeymoon heaven in Andalucía

adly, however, perhaps only for a limited time. According to a UN climate change study, rising sea levels are threatening to submerge most of the Maldives’ low-lying islands, albeit over an extended time frame that approximates the generations it would take for most of us to win any decent amount on Euro Millions anyway. So, for those seeking a romantic beachside idyll for their forthcoming honeymoon, that leaves more modest alternatives such as the Dominican Republic (a Spanish favourite and comfortably accessible from Málaga); Bali (a sort of Australians’ Costa del Sol, but still with some pleasant resorts where beer isn’t the main dish on the menu); Tunisia (Africa’s most northern country, ideal for culture vultures who don’t plan to spend all their waking days in the honeymoon four-poster); or the Canary Isles (though black sandy beaches do not appeal to everyone). These are dour times, however, with the crisis biting into our pockets, and many couples are seeking less expensive destinations closer to home,

preferably not involving a flight and onerous airport security measures. Step forward Andalucíía: perfect for those of us already living on the Costa del Sol as well as couples from elsewhere planning to hold their wedding on the Coast. For this first issue of Confeti, we thought we would suggest an itinerary that takes us through Málaga’s neighbouring province of Cádiz, from the “wind capital of Europe”, Tarifa, to the countrified sophistication of Zahara de los Atunes, perhaps a stopover in the golfing playground of Sancti Petri and, finally, a romantic interlude in a converted royal palace in Puerto de Santa María. First to Tarifa, a comfortable one and a half hour drive from Marbella. If you have left latish in the morning you might like to have a walk around the town of Tarifa, the gateway from Spain to Morocco (a 30-minute fast-ferry ride to Tangier), with its old town charm mixed with laidback surfer cool…… and stay for lunch. On a recent weekend break for our wedding anniversary, we enjoyed a superb and well-priced lunch (including salmon and

mango salad, and a copper pot brimming with arroz marinero, a seafood rice dish) at the La Pescadería restaurant in Paseo de la Alameda (the large plaza beside the main road down to the port). After lunch it was time to move on to the hotel. In previous years, on our annual Tarifa getaways, we had stayed at 100% Fun. Rather than “Fun” they should probably have named it 100% Chill-out or 100% Relax. There might be fun behind the closed doors of the hotel rooms, discreetly set out amidst
stunningly lush trees and gardens, but this is more a place to relax around the pool or on the restaurant terrace. It is the ultimate chill-out haven on a stretch of coastline that put the capital C in Chill-out – at least until a few years ago when the hordes “discovered” Tarifa. In recent years we have chosen other hotels, partly because 100% Fun is on the wrong side of the road and also because, when the right winds blow, the otherwise inviting beach across the road is packed with hundreds of kite-surfers. But the
second bottle of postprandial pacharán, they are prone to creating noisy mayhem in places they shouldn’t be: i.e. the guests’ “private” lounge area. There are numerous other hotel options in this area, including the adjacent Dos Mares and, a little further along the road, the Hurricane. When a friend heard I was putting this article together, she exclaimed excitedly, “Oh, but you have to mention horse-riding.” Now, horse-riding is not to everyone’s taste: present company included. On my last, and rare, time out on a horse both of us (the horse and me) became so frustrated at the soporific pace of the excursion – trotting gently through the Mijas hinterland with a guided group – that we clicked our heels (if that’s what one does on a horse) and

hotel is ideal for couples wanting a little intimacy and tranquillity. On this occasion we decided to stay at Arte Vida Hotel, not far along the main road from Tarifa town. The advantage here, apart from its equally laidback ambience (some say it’s the wind; others, one of the area’s popular consumer products), is that it is – literally (in the accurate sense of the word) – right on the beach. There is a restaurant and a beach bar which attracts other beach-goers, a young, trendy crowd; and guests have their own lounge area overlooking the beach and public area. Just avoid Sundays. Families tend to have long, languid lunches on this day and, understandably, their children become bored. Allowed to “express” themselves freely while their parents move on to the
galloped ahead towards the finishing line. When our group finally caught up with us we were scolded (or I was scolded – the horse escaped reprimand) that this was unacceptable, especially for a beginner. I haven’t been back on a horse since. But I digress. My friend was right: for those who do enjoy horse-riding, or would like to try it, the Hurricane has its own stables and you can take horses out for rides into the sierras or, in winter, trot along the deserted shoreline all the way to Bolonia. If this coincides with sunset, it is an even more memorable experience, especially for newlywed couples. Moving down the coast for our next few days of Andalucianstyle honeymooning, the children are another breed altogether. Zahara de los Atunes is a favourite holiday destination for the PP sophisticates from Madrid and northern Spain: that is, politicians, leading members and fellow travellers of the
conservative Partido Popular party. This is authentic PP Territory, with the children in matching sailor outfits and patterned pinafores, the men with their jumper sleeves wrapped around their necks, and the women dressed to the nines – and that’s just to go to the beach! Okay, maybe that’s a slight exaggeration. It is true that there is an under-current of schmaltzy chic in the town during the holiday season (even though the locals probably grumble that it’s more like misplaced superiority), but it offers an excellent choice of restaurants, cool lounge bars and clubs for the younger crowd in the evenings (those not still wearing matching sailor outfits and patterned pinafores)…… and the Gran Sol hotel. Located right on the beach in the midst of the town, the hotel – on our last visit a couple of years ago – was showing signs of decline from its former era of splendour (and, rather annoyingly, a fire alarm

promotion in Cádiz province, brings together 11 courses in a radius of one hour by car, including the first course designed by Severiano Ballesteros in Andalucíía, Novo Sancti Petri, a candidate to host the 1997 Ryder Cup, which eventually went to Valderrama. But we won’t linger here too long, and risk losing non-golfers’ attention before our honeymoon grand finale. Steeped in history, the Duques de Medinaceli hotel is an oasis of sedate grandeur in the otherwise fairly unremarkable town of Puerto de Santa María, although the outlaying suburbs that extend up to the Bay of Cádiz and the Atlantic coastline include some elegant boulevards and villas. The hotel was home to various aristocratic families over the centuries, and at one stage was part of the Terry Wine Cellar

was left to ring most of one of the nights we were there) but the setting is exceptional. For a slightly more up-market stay away from the madding crowd, the Antonio Hoteles have a four-star establishment about two kilometres out of town on the beach, with a frontline restaurant offering several varieties of the speciality atun de almadraba (tuna). Sancti Petri is included on this itinerary only if both of you are golfers. We have absolutely no desire to cause any collateral damage with our recommendations: golf widows (or widowers) so soon into the marriage. But our final honeymoon dinner has to be in the five-star Duques de Medinaceli’s Reina Isabel restaurant, where the menu features a superb mix of traditional and nouveau cuisine. There are many other fascinating parts of Andalucía nearby (Jerez, the historic part of Cádiz city, even Sevilla) for those wanting to extend their travels, but for now we are heading home. Next issue we will discover another romantic corner of this richly diverse region.
