Magazine launch a resounding success

W

e are delighted to report that the launch of Society Living last month attracted widespread positive comments and praise. Thank you for your kind and generous words. We always welcome feedback – even constructive criticism if you believe there are ways we can improve the magazine. In fact, the first issue was so well-received – especially the local fashion coverage – that we have boosted the number of pages for this second issue. The feedback was especially favourable about the trend-setting content and cutting-edge design of the new magazine, and this issue we continue along those lines with a stunning fashion shoot in Tarifa, a preview of the new BMW Z4 and an exclusive interview with Christina Aguilera about her new image as a fashion icon and her association with top jeweller Stephen Webster. Also this issue, trainer to the stars Nicki Waterman reveals how ladies can halve their bikini age, Nicola McGeorge discovers that big hair is back; Gillaine Hathaway treats us to some recipe secrets for Spain’s famous paella; Linda Mindel Carvel sends another captivating postcard from London; Micky Reynolds brings us the latest news and gossip from the worlds of music and movies; and renowned astrologist Russell Grant provides an enthralling insight into our star signs. As we mentioned last month, the publishers are streamlining the distribution network to focus on prime outlets (including rooms in leading hotels) and maximise exposure for advertisers. If you would like your business or venue included as an outlet for the magazine, give us a call or send us an email (see contacts details below).

GLAMOUR DIGEST PRANCING POWER AND POISE Ferrari used the setting of the Geneva International Motor Show to announce two new state-of-the-art initiatives: the Handling GT Evoluzione (HGTE) Package for the 599 GTB Fiorano; and the debut of the 599XX, “a technological laboratory aimed at a select group of clients”. According to chairman Luca di Montezemolo, the latter car incorporates the most advanced technologies resulting from Ferrari’s road-going and F1 research. Many of these technological solutions are being used for the first time, and were developed exclusively for the car. The 599 GTB Fiorano is finished in a three-layer metallic Rosso; while the 599XX matches the colour of the F2008. www.ferrari.com

CHIC STYLES AND ALLURING IDEAS FROM THE WORLD OF FASHION… PLUS OTHER IN VOGUE NEWS FOR TREND-SETTERS THE ULTIMATE EXPRESSION OF LUXURY The Jaguar XF was named “best luxury car” at the Fleet World Honours 2009 awards ceremony last month at the Royal Automobile Club in Pall Mall. According to Fleet World editor, Ken Rogers, “The Jaguar XF is, without a doubt, an impressive expression of luxury. Even though it preserves the design features of Jaguar’s illustrious legacy, it is also a clearly contemporary product, with all the style, luxury and features you would expect of a car that carries the motif of this charismatic brand.” www.jaguar.com

FASHION IN MOTION Puma have marked the launch of their first sports fashion wear collection by teaming up with celebrated British designer Alexander McQueen to create a “brand movie” featuring the 2009 autumn/winter collection. Acclaimed music video director Saam Faramond – who was recently named

arbara is back! Those of a certain age will remember the Biba shops that revolutionised fashion in the early Seventies, and took over the old Derry & Toms in Kensington High St. Well, that was Barbara Hulanicki. She then went off for 30 years to Miami, and designed hotels for Island record producer Chris Blackwell, returned to London last year to design an exclusive collection of bags for Coccinelle, and even did a nightclub for Ronnie Wood. The Rolling Stones loved Biba, and Mick Jagger bought clothes there for all his girlfriends. Now Barbara’s back in town, with an exclusive new collection for Top Shop. We met at the opening, when her designs in Seventies prints sold out the same day! Did she like models designing clothes? Yes if it’s Kate Moss, “because she is knowledgeable about clothes”. No, if it’s Madonna, because “she knows nothing”. Biba, the Musical has been discussed for years, but never happened. Now that Meryl Streep has had such a great success with Mamma Mia! The Movie, could it be on the cards? I was just about to ask Barbara, when Sir Philip Green whisked her away to his boardroom. Do you know the Top Ten places to visit when you next come to London? I only ask, as I’ve just been sent the revised

edition of the DK Eyewitness Top Ten series, and find the traditional places are still there. Top is the British Museum, then the National Gallery, the London Eye, the two Tates, the Natural History and Science museums, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and finally the Tower of London. Wouldn’t argue with any of these, though I think I’d have included Portobello Market and the Wallace Collection. Looking through this guide has reminded me what an incredibly diverse city London is: so much history, so much art, so much entertainment. Not forgetting the shops! I really do recommend DK Top Ten series. They are superb introductions to any city. I went to Barcelona for the first time last month, and their Top Ten guide for that was just as good as the one for London. Million pounds for a car? Must be a mistake, I thought when I heard about the new Aston Martin. Apparently not. It’s called the One-77, because they are only going to make 77 of The Molti Mahal restaurant in Covent Garden has launched weekly Bollywood Dinner & Dance Class sessions

CITY LIGHTS them for £1.2 million each. Not a chance, I thought, but they tell me that they already have 100 serious potential buyers. Of course, the same people could buy a McLaren for a million – and join Rowan Atkinson, who loves to drive his around Silverstone on a Sunday. Or the new Ferrari 599XX, which has the slight problem that we can never use it on the road, only on the track. Not surprisingly only 35 will be made. Went to Charing Cross Road to have a book printed in 10 minutes. No, not another magnum opus from moi, but any one of 400,000 books that Blackwell’s can print for you in their shop. They have one of only three Espresso Book Machines in the world, and they are trialling it this summer to see what the demand will be. The pages spew out at 100 a minute, and then are bound in a few minutes. I had TS Elliot’s The Waste Land printed for my husband, and it took precisely nine minutes, not even time to drink my cappuccino. Cost? Ten pounds. I think it’s a miracle, and the most wonderful present for anyone. When you’re in London this summer, go look at this revolution. It could change publishing as much as the ebook. Absolute Return for Kids, the biggest fundraising event in London, is charging £10,000 a ticket to attend the glamorous soiree. The charity, run by hedge fund chairman Arpad Busson and supported by his fiancée, actress Uma Thurman, is holding its annual ball this month in Waterloo Station’s former Eurostar terminal. The event, says Busson, will be less lavish than last year’s at the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, but that doesn’t seem to have affected the whopping cost of tickets! One thousand one hundred guests attended last year’s bash, and raised an impressive £25.5 million at the event, which funds city academies in London, and helps children in India, South Africa and eastern Europe. But will the likes of Tony Blair, Elizabeth Hurley, Valentino, Jemima Khan, Elton John and Sting be flashing their smiles, and opening their chequebooks again this year? There still seems to be big bucks available for the right charity that can attract high-profile coverage and big spenders. But for how much longer, is anybody’s guess. Keira Knightley’s the youngest of Hollywood’s most bankable stars, according to the Star Currency list, drawn-up by Forbes magazines. The 23-year-old slender beauty placed 42nd, ahead of Kate Winslet, Halle Berry and Jennifer Aniston. Her position is mainly due to her role in the Pirates of the Caribbean films, which have scooped over £1.8 billion at the boxoffice worldwide. The list of 100 actors and actresses is still dominated by men though, with only Angelina

Keira Knightley is the youngest of Hollywood’s most bankable stars

Jolie, Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep making the top 10. It is based on box-office receipts, a star’s ability to attract financing and guarantee cinema distribution for a project, and whether or not their involvement is enough to make a film a success. The only British actors to make the list are Christian Bale, Daniel Day-Lewis, Daniel Craig and Sacha Baron Cohen. Quelle surprise, eh! La dame rumour has it that George Clooney and Naomi Watts are signing up for a remake of Hitchcock’s The Birds. The great director’s films of The Birds, Vertigo, North By

Northwest, Rear Window, etc., are cinema masterpieces. I can’t believe that Hollywood is so bankrupt of creativity that they have the chutzpah to do this. What’s next? A remake of Casablanca or Citizen Kane? Heaven help us if it comes to that! After the success of Vicky Christina Barcelona, Woody Allen is returning to London to direct a fourth film this summer, starring Josh Brolin, Sir Anthony Hopkins and the enchanting Frieda Pinto, who starred as the love interest in Slumdog Millionaire. It’ll be nice to see the clarinet lover again, buying his Cheerios at Waitrose in Belgravia! societylivingmagazine.com

The strong cast also features Kim Cattrall, Tom Wilkinson and James Belushi. Can’t wait to see how Brosnan plays the Tony Blair-like former leader! QUICK CLIPS

After his summer holidays, which will probably include some time on the Coast, ANTONIO BANDERAS starts filming The Big Bang: a “neonoir detective story” where he plays an LA private detective hired to find a missing stripper but somehow stumbles upon a nuclear physics project that could bring about world destruction. 16

Another heart-throb, BRAD PITT, starts filming Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game this month. He plays BILLY BEANE, the real-life general manager of the Oakland A’s baseball team, who put together winning teams based on an unusual computer analysis when drafting players. US comic script writer DEMITRI MARTIN plays a statistician whose Earned Run Value system took a unique

approach to scouting and enabled the team to hire quality players at a lower cost. Former pro baseball stars DAVID JUSTICE, SCOTT HATTEBERG, LENNY DYKSTRA and the legendary DARYL STRAWBERRY all have cameo roles. CHRISTOPHER LEE, the man who made the Dracula role his own during the 1960s, is returning to the revamped legendary UK horror studio Hammer for Invasion of Privacy. HILLARY SWANK moves to a Brooklyn apartment, after leaving her husband (JEFFREY DEAN MORGAN), and discovers she’s being watched. BIG SCREEN MOVIE OF THE MONTH THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS This fantasy film already achieved cult status before it was a wrap due to the untimely death of main man HEATH LEADGER in January last year from an accidental “toxic combination of prescription drugs”. After the death of his friend, director TERRY GILLIAM suspended production indefinitely but was persuaded to continue by such buddies as JOHNNY DEPP, COLIN FARRELL and JUDE LAW, who all appeared as transformations of the departed actor’s character, the mysterious outsider Tony, across a series of parallel worlds. CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER plays the eponymous 1,000-year-old doctor, the leader of a travelling theatre troupe, who a long time ago made a deal with the Devil that gives his audience members a journey through a magical mirror to explore their imaginations. Their agreement included the doctor’s immortality but when his firstborn reached its 16th birthday he or she would become the property of Beelzebub – so along with his two companions, Anton (ANDREW GARFIELD) and Percy the dwarf (VERNE “Mini Me” TROYER), plus the multiportrayed Tony, the doctor sets out to rescue his daughter Valentina (LILY COLE) from the clutches of hell. But another wager between the doctor and the Devil gives this tale an extra twist. The film was due to debut last month at the Cannes Festival and has a release date of 6 June, even though there has been a shroud of mystery over its actual release date due to in-house legal complications – but whenever it hits the silver screen it will no doubt be a box office smash.

pipeline. In ABEL FERRARA’s Jekyll and Hyde FORREST WHITAKER and rapper CURTIS “50 CENT” JACKSON share the split personality role; while GUILLERMO DEL TORO’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde has KEANU REEVES playing the man. The latter is on hold until DEL TORO finishes filming The Hobbit. In the meantime REEVES is considering replacing CLIVE OWEN in Cartagena as an undercover operative who infiltrates a Columbian drug ring. Script-writers were complaining last year about how much money they were getting but how many remakes, prequels

and sequels hit the screens these days? For instance, RIDLEY SCOTT is considering turning back the clock to make a prequel to his 1979 classic Alien; 1984’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is resurfacing, telling the origins of the characters; and director ROBERT ZEMECKIS wants to resurrect his ‘80s crazy cartoon character Roger Rabbit. OLIVER STONE is following up his 1987 classic Wall Street with MICHAEL DOUGLAS returning as Gordon Gecko, with SHIA LaBEOUF as his younger protégé; and SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR may return to kick more vampire ass as Buffy the Vampire Slayer in a film sequel to the 1990s TV series. Sony Pictures are putting the wheels in motion for Men In Black III but no word if TOMMY LEE JONES or WILL SMITH will be involved. But the latter could be on board director McG’s version of the JULES VERNE novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea as Captain Nemo after DWAYNE JOHNSON turned down the role. Now here’s a name from the past – exMiami Vice crime buster DON JOHNSON is portraying a mustachioed porn director in the ADAM SANDLER-penned comedy Born to Be a Star. NICK SWARDSON is a smalltown nerd who learns his quiet and demure parents were famous porn stars in the 1970s. He heads for Hollywood hoping to follow in their footsteps and fulfill his destiny as the biggest adultfilm star in the world. CHRISTINA RICCI plays his innocent girlfriend and STEPHEN DORFF JR. is an adult film star. The latter starts work this month on FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA’s daughter SOFIA’s Somewhere as a bad-boy actor whose life changes when he is visited by his 11-year-old daughter (ELLE FANNING). Primeval, the UK TV special effects-laden series has been a hit both sides of the Atlantic and Warner Bros have purchased the film rights. The show that recently finished its third series follows a team of scientists who investigate the appearance of temporal anomalies throughout Britain that transport prehistoric and futuristic creatures to the present.

BACKSTAGE PASS GREEN DAY ARE ON THE WAY US alternative rock outfit GREEN DAY are playing in Barcelona and Madrid during September to promote their recently released 21st Century Breakdown album, which has been the fastest selling CD in the UK this year to date. Known for their electric live performances, their recent shows Stateside have been three hours-plus and if it’s anything like 2005’s American Idiot Tour… this is a gig not to be missed. Tickets can be purchased in most towns along the Coast – to find your nearest outlet go to www.ticktackticket.com and punch GREEN DAY in the search engine. Three UK indie bands kick off the 2009 Ibiza Rocks summer season this month: on the 16th with THE TING TINGS; then on the 23rd the highly rated FRIENDLY FIRES; and THE KOOKS are booked for the 30th. The whole summer programme plus ticket and hotel booking information can be found at www.ibizarocks.com. The Benicàssim Festival is now sold out except for the first day (Thursday 16 July), when OASIS top the bill. Tickets for that day can be purchased from www.fiberfib.com. But one festival that has not sold out yet is Bilbao BBK Live on 9-11 July, which features the KAISER CHIEFS, PRIMAL SCREAM and PLACEBO. At least it’s keeping her away from recording another album – so let’s be thankful for small Mercies. Maybe the country should be awarded a Grammy for an outstanding contribution to music. QUEEN and PAUL RODGERS have ended their collaboration; the former FREE and BAD

A CD/DVD, Queen + Paul Rodgers Live In Ukraine, is out on 15 June. Also going her separate way is NICOLE SCHERZINGER, who will quit the PUSSYCAT DOLLS to pursue a solo career once the band’s current Doll Domination promotion has been completed. Then it’s into the studio to start work on Her Name Is Nicole with the help of WILL.I.AM and TIMBERLAND. LIAM GALLAGHER, who this month is launching his own clothing brand, Pretty Green (named after the 1981 track by THE JAM), has threatened to quit OASIS if brother NOEL records a solo album. flicked his middle finger and made V-signs at them – security stepped in and forced him back to his executive box seat. ROD STEWART has become the patron for Busking Cancer 2009, which runs from 20 June for a week. The veteran, who beat thyroid cancer, started his career busking on the streets of Paris during the early ‘60s. Did you know that Britain’s Got Talent star SUSAN BOYLE has been offered $1 million to make a porno movie – runaway! She reckons her new-found fame will not go to her head. “I’m gonna keep my feet firmly on the ground,” she announced to reporters who were pushed back by her security guards as she entered her local Kabbalah centre clutching adoption papers. Comedian FRANKIE BOYLE said, “She claims she’s never been kissed, so Scotland’s alcohol problems aren’t as bad as we thought!” Last month an original copy of the 1965 U.S. Soul label (a subsidiary of Tamla Motown) 7inch single Do I Love You by FRANK WILSON was auctioned for £25,742 – a world record for a vinyl recording (it would have been worth more if the former owner had not got the artist to sign the label). It became rare when the angry Motown boss BERRY GORDY had all copies destroyed after the singer quit recording to move into songwriting and production, working with most of the label’s top artists – but three copies survived. One was damaged but the other two made their way to the UK in 1978, reaching classic status on northern soul dance floors. The song reached the general public’s ears in 2003 thanks to a Kentucky Fried Chicken TV ad (it was then released in the UK on Tamla Motown and copies currently cost £15). Personally, me thinks the version by white Motown singer CHRIS CLARK is better. N-DUBZ singer TULISA CONTOSTAVLOS, who recently spent time on top of the UK singles charts featuring on the TINCHY STRYDER song Number 1, had tests for swine flu on a recent visit to Greece – which brings us to the latest entry into the old jokes home… A man goes to the doctor complaining about swine flu. “How long have you have you felt like this?” asks the medic, to which the man replies, “About a weeeeeeeeek!”

DEPECHE MODE are still big throughout Europe, and their recently released album, Sounds Of The Universe, went straight to No.1 in over a dozen countries. A track from the album, Peace, is released as a single on 15 June and they play in Sevilla on 12 July. For ticket info go to www.ticketmaster.es. Rain rained on AMY WINEBOTTLE’s parade for her comeback gig at the St. Lucia Jazz Festival last month. Reports also say she wasn’t the most sober person at the concert; she twice told the audience to go forth and multiply while propping up a monitor. As in years gone by BBC TV has excellent coverage of the Glastonbury Festival, which runs from 24 to 28 June. The line-up includes BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, LADY GAGA, “silly” LILY ALLEN and the legendary SPINAL TAP. Those with interactive TV will have a wider selection – for more info on the festival go to www.bbc.co.uk/glastonbury/2009.

LADY GAGA says she won’t use Twitter as she doesn’t want the world gawping at her – this comes from someone who spent most of the freezing cold winter parading around the London night scene semi-naked. On a recent visit to Moscow she was mistaken for a prostitute by local police while taking photos in Red Square – she must have been wearing one of her weird outfits again! How do you annoy LADY GAGA? Poke her face!

cannot believe it was over 10 years ago that I was bopping away to the infectious Genie In A Bottle. It was sung by an innocent, new-on-the-scene pop princess named Christina Aguilera. Since then she has been entwined in my life whether it be me shaking my tush on a packed dance floor to Dirrty, crying in my room to Beautiful (I cannot believe I just admitted that) or even singing karaoke on my 21st birthday to Lady Marmalade dressed in a Moulin Rouge outfit. Come on, I mean, how many of you out there have fond memories that are associated with at least one of her songs?

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT As I have grown so has she. From girl next door to her sexually provocative Stripped era and, recently, old school Hollywood screen siren… She has reinvented herself throughout the years nearly as many times as Madonna. After a few hits and misses, she has finally been accepted as a style icon in her own right. Opting for vintage glamour, to which she adds her own unique spin, she has found a look which really works for her. Instead of being met with criticism, this move has received a lot of praise from fashionistas. This has resulted in her becoming the face and muse of Stephen Webster, one of the leading British figures in fine jewellery and silver design. “I like the fact that she keeps on moving,” says Stephen Webster. “The style she has now is a million miles away from where she was a few years ago. These things are very important when you are young. The place she is at now is perfect for my jewellery; both are about glamour; and, equally, Christina’s talent and the jewellery feel as though they have a real substance. The fact that she is so petite and feminine seems to work with my pieces, which are anything but that.” The dynamic duo met in London while Christina was in the UK on a promotional trip. Having already bought a couple of pieces of his jewellery which she wore in the Lady Marmalade video, she was eager to meet him. “I immediately liked him,” she recalls. “We met over cocktails with mutual friends and laughed and chatted the night away. He’s such a character and rock star in his own right. He lights up the room. Never a dull moment with Stephen around. We clicked right away and I continue to be a fan.” A girl after my own heart, she does have a slight jewellery obsession. After buying Ozzy Osborne’s Beverly Hills mansion she had constructed in her closet a nearly floor to ceiling built-in cabinet with 15 black velvetlined drawers – custom-made to house her jewellery collection. “I have everything from rings, bracelets, earrings, necklaces, and even Stephen’s new watch. Honestly, too many to count. I have been collecting his jewellery for years now and I am always getting something new each time he introduces a new collection. It’s funny, when you open the drawers to my jewellery collection it looks like I have a Stephen Webster store in my own home!” Christina shares her home with her husband, music marketing executive Jordan Bratman, and her first child, one-year-old Max Liron Bratman. Both have been pivotal in her development. It was since meeting Jordan that she decided to embrace a more mature image. They met in 2002, eventually getting married three years later. She seems to be more comfortable in herself since finding Jordan. There was, of course, her infamous interview with Ellen DeGeneres when Aguilera revealed that she and Bratman enjoy being nude on Sundays, saying, “You have to keep marriage alive, spice it up.” The story received so much coverage that supermodel Heidi Klum told Degeneres that she and her husband, Seal, would consider doing the same ritual. w w w. s o c i e t y l i v i n g m a g a z i n e . c o m

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT I have heard so much about her engagement/ wedding ring that I was dying to find out more about it. “Stephen worked closely with my husband on the design so it really is the ring of my dreams. I will cherish that one for the rest of my life. My husband also just gave me a beautiful Stephen-designed locket as my first Mother’s Day gift, complete with a picture of my son Max inside. It is a heart-shaped locket with a sword going through its centre, made from red rubies and diamonds. It is absolutely stunning and, of course, has The fact that she very special personal is so petite and meaning to me.” Stephen’s jewellery feminine seems to obviously has become more work with my pieces, than just accessories for her. Are there any plans to work which are anything together again? “I’m always looking forward to time but that with Stephen…whether it be work or play. I respect him as an artist and love him as a friend. I’m currently in love with this amazing diamondencrusted bat ring I recently bought and wore on a photo shoot. It spreads across three of my middle fingers and sparkles-so gorgeously! There is always room in my jewellery box for more Stephen Webster pieces.” What’s next for Christina, only time will tell. Whether it be modelling for celebrity jewellery designers, launching her own perfumes or maybe even making her big-screen debut in a new sexy musical called Burlesque… as long as she keeps producing life-changing music, I will remain her loyal fan. arbella is definitely in fashion these days. I am being asked more and more to go on TV programmes featuring the area. In fact, on one occasion last month I was with different TV crews from Spain and the UK on the same day! TV channels from all over Europe want to do programmes about the famed and still very popular Marbella lifestyle – featuring the beautiful homes, boats, boutiques, etc., we have here. The various long weekends since Easter have been very positive. People visiting from northern parts of Spain have been having a great time on the Coast, and I think this is one of the main reasons why TV channels are taking an increasing interest in the area. The German market is showing signs of improvement; and all the British need is for a slightly stronger pound and they will be flying in again to possibly buy. Overall it was a very productive month, and I think we will have a busy summer. There are definitely positive signs. People have been dreaming all their lives about settling here and now they can afford to – able to buy homes for much less than two years ago. Rentals are very busy – we have great-value frontline beach houses and apartments – and even our new KS Marine department is picking up business. We have been give instructions to

sell the 42-metre boat of a famous person (who I’m afraid I can’t name). It was launched in 2004 and is for sale for ¤16 million. “As one of my colleagues said, “It’s not a boat, it’s a house!” Things are definitely changing. Those of us who already live here, or visit regularly, are noticing little things happening, like old problems being quietly fixed, infrastructure being improved, even shows by top international artists returning to Marbella – and, of course, the Davis Cup tennis match between Spain and Germany from 10 to 12 July. As another of my team noted, “They are freshening up the image and people have more faith, and that translates into greater business activity.” As usual last month, I took the opportunity of doing business on my travels. In Madrid, where our office is also having an active time, I attended the 20th anniversary of leading law firm Balms, which has offices locally here as well as 28 associate offices in 18 countries around the world. In London, as always, I had meetings with our affiliates from Sotheby’s International Realty, who are growing worldwide. With our association with Sotheby’s being consolidated, there are increasing business opportunities for our clients, both buyers and vendors. The main reason I was in London was – with a group of friends from Marbella – to attend the wedding of Sunil and Tina. (Sunil and his father

’’

Ram have just opened the Polo House club and restaurant in Marbella.) The wedding was a stunning 1001 Nights-themed banquet, with lovely music, beautiful flower arrangements, an amazing performance by two very talented acrobats, and even a trip to the reception on a double-decker bus specially hired for guests. Not to mention the gorgeous couple, and the beautiful saris. Back in Marbella, I enjoyed a great night at Puente Romano to celebrate the hotel’s 30th anniversary; a gala dinner and fantastic “We Will Rock You” musical featuring the songs of Queen. However, the most special moment of the month was the christening of my godson, Lanzo, with a lovely reception held later at the home of his parents, Kerstin and David. Apart from than that, I was also happy to participate once again in the annual music cruise with my friend Charo. Brought forward from September because the ship was booked up then, it followed an interesting itinerary: from Barcelona to Palma de Mallorca, Sardinia, Corsica and Portofino. You are able to enjoy rehearsals during the day, performances at local theatres and other magical settings on shore, then concerts in the evenings back on board. Some of the concerts were directed by famous Russian pianist and conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy. I’ve been going on these cruises for 10 years and they are still memorable. We went up into the hills in Corsica to some amazing places – the colour of the flowers was unbelievable – and Portofino is also an absolute gem. In Palma we visited the Esbaluard modern art museum, where there was an exhibition by Anselm Kiefer of really beautiful contemporary art; and in Barcelona we visited one of the Gaudi parks, simply fantastic. Finally, a reminder about the Rotary gala on 18 July. I take over as president at the end of June, so I really want to ensure it is a success again. It’s ¤120 a head and is being held in the magnificent setting of La Concepción. Call me on telephone 952 810 102. In the meantime, we can all look forward to enjoying June, one of the best months of the year.

Delightful day in San Pedro for children and adults alike When will we ever grow up? Never, I hope! Easter always brings out the kid in most people, and Bel Mare restaurant ensured that the mystic of Spain’s Semana Santa was honoured at the Italian establishment. On arrival 200 people, including Merich’s beautiful grand-daughters Jade and Brook, enjoyed Sunday’s festivities, throughout the day and night. The restaurant was bedecked with daffodils and tulips, bunnies and chicks, including two live rabbits named Chanel and Dior – frightfully Costa del Sol! It was a wonderful day out for the parents, as they could relax and enjoy the fine gourmet while their children were entertained with a traditional Easter egg hunt followed by a drawing competition. The winners were given Easter bunny chocolates, but no one left empty-handed, as owner Merich gave everyone a naughty chocolate treat on departure. Words: Annabel Milnes-Smith

Marbella is one of my favourite places to play golf and I would love to be in attendance.” Created by Tumba (a former Swedish ice hockey star, and representative footballer and golfer) 14 years ago, the tournament is expected to attract golfers from more than 25 countries (www.worldgolfersusa.com).

irst of all, the most important question. Will a bag of golf clubs fit relatively comfortably into the boot? Okay, this may not be the most important question, but it is especially relevant in this case, as we decided to photograph the new BMW Z4 at Málaga’s Parador del Golf. The answer is, yes, no problem fitting one and, with a bit of strategic pushing and squeezing, even two sets of clubs in the boot, provided the roof isn’t down, as some of its component parts obviously tuck into the back. Inaugurated in 1925, the Parador’s Real Club de Campo de Málaga is the oldest course in southern Spain and the seventh oldest in the entire country. It was about the same time, in 1930, that BMW built its first two-seat sports car, the 3/15 PA Wartburg Roadster. Now, 80

years later, the new Z4 has been launched onto the market with the same tried and tested BMW roadster features of its predecessors (long, low-slung front end, low seating position near the rear axle…) complemented by various state-of-the-art innovations. The successor to the BMW Z4 roadster and BMW Z4 coupé, it is the first Z4 to include a retractable hard-top roof – which can be raised or lowered in 20 seconds (we tested it several times, and it certainly can). It is also the first roadster to come with the option of adaptive M sport suspension. A 10-millimetre lower suspension drops the centre of gravity for faster cornering, sensors measure relevant acceleration and adjust the damping within hundredths of a second, and Driving Dynamic Control offers three different modes: Normal, Sport and Sport+.

The new Z4 has a choice of three straight-six power units. The flagship 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged engine is an International Engine of the Year winner. The 306 hp sDrive35i powers its way from 0 to 100 kph in 5.2 seconds and up to an electronically-limited top speed of 250 kph. This performance is matched by its outstanding economy and emissions: the sDrive35i records a combined consumption figure of 30.1 mpg and CO2 emissions of 219 g/km. The sDrive35i can also be specified with a double clutch transmission, which lowers the 0 to 100 kph time to 5.1 seconds, with 31.4 mpg consumption and CO2 emissions at 210 g/km. The other two models, the sDrive23i and sDrive30i, both use the same magnesium aluminium alloy engine with double-vanos and valvetronic technology, but with varying capacities. The 2.5-litre sDrive23i produces 204 hp to power from 0 to 100 kph in 6.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 242 kph; and is capable of a combined 33.2 mpg and CO2 emissions of 199 g/km. The sDrive30i comes with a 3.0-litre powerplant producing 258 hp, the six-cylinder engine recording a 0 to 100 kph time of 5.8 seconds, a top speed of 250 kph, and combined consumption and CO2 emission figures of 33.2 mpg and 199 g/km. All three Z4s have a six-speed manual gearbox as standard. Those buying the 58

sDrive23i or sDrive30i can opt for a six-speed sport automatic transmission featuring gear change paddles on the steering wheel; while the BMW Z4 sDrive35i comes with the option of a seven-speed double clutch transmission. Another first for the new roadster is the inclusion of BMW’s latest iDrive control system, in conjunction with the optional BMW professional multimedia navigation system – which features a hard disc drive with capacity for 12Gb of audio file storage and BMW ConnectedDrive functionality, as well as a folding 22-centimetre display with highresolution graphic presentation and optimised menu structure. The new BMW roadster is 148 millimetres longer (at 4,239 millimetres) and nine millimetres wider (1,790 millimetres) than the previous model, this providing greater interior space and luggage capacity. Headroom has been increased by 44 millimetres with the roof up; while all-round visibility is improved by 14 per cent and, thanks to the four electric windows creating a larger “glasshouse”, side visibility is up 40 per cent. The retractable hard-top features a glass rear window which also improves visibility by 52 per cent. Storage options within the passenger compartment include a spacious crosswise storage compartment behind the seats; while an optional storage package and throughloading (including a transport bag for bulky

Introduced to compete directly against the Mercedes SLK and Audi TT Roadster, the BMW Z4 has taken the fight to its rivals. BMW’s own market research showed that one of the key reasons people chose the Mercedes over the previous BMW Z4 was the added benefit of a folding metal roof, while most buyers also wanted more comfort and practicality. Taking these factors into consideration, BMW’s designers and engineers have successfully produced a new roadster that manages to attend to these demands while preserving the Z4’s renowned driving dynamics.

Nicki Waterman TOP TRAINER TO THE STARS OFFERS USEFUL ADVICE FOR A HEALTHIER AND FITTER LIFESTYLE – AND VALUABLE TIPS TO LOSE THOSE EXTRA KILOS

WEIGHT-LOSS SPECIAL Everything you need to know to halve your bikini age Ever wondered how celebs manage to look so much younger than their years in a bikini? Why Jennifer Aniston still looks just 21 in a twopiece or Liz Hurley’s beach body continues to defy gravity? It’s time to start thinking about summer. But if the thought of exposing your wobbly white flesh fills you with dread, don’t panic – we’re here to help. We’ve uncovered the swimsuit secrets of the stars and devised a diet and exercise plan that can help you – like them – turn back time on the beach...

SWITCH TO GOOD CARBS Research in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that the waistlines of middleaged people who ate white bread and other white carbs expanded three times more than those who got the same number of daily calories from wholegrains. Swap to wholegrain cereal, bread and pasta.

CHOOSE THE THICK END OF THE WEDGE A medium-sized wedge sandal is perfect for wearing on the beach and will instantly slim and elongate less-than-lean legs.

MINI-SIZE ME Make sure you’re eating the right portion sizes to keep your weight stable. For dinner your serving of meat or fish should be no bigger than the palm of your hand, and you should never have more than a fistful of carbs. The rest of your plate should be filled with vegetables.

CUT BACK ON BOOZE THE RIGHT FOODS Slashing your bikini body age starts with eating the right foods. A healthy diet full of lean protein allows you to retain muscle tone but lose excess fat as you age. Plenty of antioxidant-rich fruit and veg will help stave off premature ageing.

FEAST ON FISH Fish is a great source of the protein leptin, which acts like a hormone in the body and controls your appetite so you don’t overeat. Plus, according to the creator of the “fish facelift” diet, Dr Perricone, oily fish such as salmon contain high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which are potent wrinkle-fighters.

DITCH “ENERGY DENSE” SNACKS Between-meal treats tend to have heaps of calories crammed into small quantities and will ensure you pile on weight around your middle and thighs – a dead giveaway of your true age. Foods like ice cream, crisps, chocolate and fizzy drinks fall into this category, so limit them to a twice-a-week treat and snack instead on a wide range of brightly coloured fruit.

78

www.societylivingmagazine.com

Reduce your alcohol intake to a small glass of red wine with dinner at weekends only. Not only is it laden with calories, but too much dehydrates skin and can age you prematurely.

Anti-ageing beach tricks PERFECT YOUR POSTURE Nothing is more ageing than hunched shoulders and bad posture – so stand tall. You’ll look up to seven pounds (three kilograms) lighter by pulling your shoulders back, drawing your tummy button towards your spine and tucking in your bottom.

USE A STYLISH COVER-UP Not only will sarongs and kaftans be supertrendy this summer, but they’re great for hiding tummies and thighs.

BE A SHADY LADY It may sound silly but a trick celebs use is to wear huge accessories. So don big sunglasses or sling a supersized beach tote over your shoulder to create an instant impression of allover weight loss.

FAKE DON’T BAKE Buy a decent fake tan and start building it up about a month before it’s time to reveal all. Bronzed skin hides a multitude of sins and makes you look trimmer and more toned.

Your easiest-ever bikini workout Instead of embarking on a super-strict routine you’ll ditch in a week’s time, commit to a sensible amount of exercise now and you’ll be in shape by summer. 1. Pick an activity you really enjoy, such as dancing or swimming, and aim for 30 minutes every other day from now till your hols. Regular cardio will burn off excess calories and help rev up your metabolism 2. Build up to 45 minutes after two or three weeks to maximize your weight loss. 3. To further streamline your shape, try doing just 10 squats, 10 press-ups and 20 situps a day, too. These moves will help pump up and strengthen your muscles, giving your body a more toned look.

THE FAT-BUSTING CUPPA Next time you sit down for a cuppa why not swap your traditional English breakfast for a cup of white tea? Scientists have found that the hand-picked herbal tea could be a key weapon for women battling the bulge. Tests have shown that compounds in the tea, which is a purer version of black and green teas, prevent the body storing fat and break down existing stores. White tea is made from tender leaves and buds handpicked from

the top of the plant, which are thought to be more beneficial than those leaves used in black and green teas. By using young, relatively unprocessed leaves, white tea helps retain high levels of the fat-busting compounds, the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism reports. It is also credited with being able to help strengthen the bones and lower blood pressure. Researcher Marc Winnefeld, of German skincare firm Besiresdorf, said his team had shown that white tea could be an ideal natural source of slimming substances. But those wishing to give white tea a try should expect to pay around three times more for a box of white tea than regular breakfast tea. All the leaves must be picked by hand and it takes up to 7,000 of them to make just one kilogram of the bulge-busting beverage. Still, we reckon it might be worth a try.

Your weekly meal planner Breakfasts Tomato, spinach and goat’s cheese omelette. Porridge with semi-skimmed milk, handful of fresh berries. Granary toast with peanut butter, and banana and blueberry smoothie. Muesli topped with chopped apple and yoghurt. Two whole meal muffins with jam, glass of orange juice.

Lunches Vegetable (such as sweet potato) soup with granary roll. Whole meal pitta filled with vegetable chilli. Can of sardines in tomato sauce on granary toast. Lemon and herb couscous salad with grilled chicken pieces. Tuna salad with boiled egg and green beans.

Dinners Grilled salmon with lemon and garlic, new potatoes and steamed mixed veg. Chicken and vegetable stir fry served with rice noodles. Small lean grilled steak served with roasted red pepper, courgette and butternut squash. Prawn and mixed vegetable curry, made with two teaspoons of garam masala spice and two tablespoons of low-fat crème fraiche, with basmati rice. Cod grilled with basil and a little mozzarella served with a selection of leafy green vegetables.

Snacks Mini pitta with hummus. Two oatcakes with mashed avocado. Handful of unsalted almonds. Small fruit yoghurt. Five dried prunes. Any fruit. Handful of olives.

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Question: My tummy and feet seem permanently bloated and puffy. Will losing weight help? Nicki says: Yes, shedding weight will improve circulation, which will help, but it’s vital to reduce your salt intake. We only need one gram per day, yet pack away up to 16 grams. By eating three grams per day, you can lose up to 1.5 litres of retained water and dramatically reduce bloating. Visit www.salt.gov.uk for ways to cut back on salt. I’d love to hear from you, so email your questions, tips and diet successstories to me at www.nickiwaterman.com

HOW CELEBS MANAGE TO KEEP THEIR FIGURES Cindy Crawford Real age: 43 Bikini age: 23 How she does it: The supermodel has said, “I think I look pretty good for 43 but I don’t look the way I did when I was 23.” We disagree! Cindy stays in shape by combining regular jogging and swimming with running around after her two kids. She also sticks to a low-carb, high-protein diet – while allowing the occasional treat.

Jennifer Aniston Real age: 40 Bikini age: 21 How she does it: Jen puts her youthful looks down to water. “If I don’t have enough, my skin goes crepey,” she says. She also sticks to the new version of the Atkins diet, which mixes wholemeal carbs and fruit with lean proteins.

Liz Hurley Real age: 43 Bikini age: 28 How she does it: Liz admits, “After 40 you’ve got to take more care of yourself. I work very hard.” The mum-of-one exercises portion control as she’s no fan of the gym. She often tucks into fish or chicken, rice and veg.

Helen Mirren Real age: 63 Bikini age: 35 How she does it: Happy to flaunt her curves and flat stomach – at bus pass age – she puts it all down to a relaxed attitude to life. “I don’t smoke and I don’t drink too much, I exercise occasionally but I’m incredibly lazy physically.” Nor is the Oscar winner a fan of surgery. “Women in Hollywood don’t look young, they just look odd. But if it’s getting to a point where it’s really depressing me then I’ll do it,” she adds.

AND FINALLY…

Too little sleep increases levels of the appetite stimulating hormone ghrelin in our bodies. Two big offenders for disturbing sleep are the light emitted from mobile phones and digital displays on clocks. Since any light can signal the brain to wake you up, switch phones off and cover digital clock displays at night time in your bedroom. w w w. s o c i e t y l i v i n g m a g a z i n e . c o m

Big hair is back! My hair technician, Jonathan Yeadon, from Reflections said that he hasn’t had to use this many rollers in years. But, before you go all Joan Collins on me, this time it’s big hair in great condition. The, dry, threeday-old back comb was never a good look. Aim for healthy, shiny hair with a bit of volume. Jonathan advises, “Hair that is in a bad condition will not style properly or do as it’s told. If you want to add volume, waves or curls, you need to have healthy hair first.” For hair that is loved and looked after these products should help.

Feel the force Anybody that has met me knows that I like to rock the big, wavy hair look. Well it does save a fortune on getting my hair straightened at the salon. The only problem is that from midJune to September my waves last about half an hour. The minute the humidity hits, my curls drop and I end up looking like I have been dragged through a hedge backwards. However, after trying hundreds of sprays I have finally found one that holds my curls, no matter how hot it gets. Celebrity trichologist Philip Kingsley’s Weather Proof Spray gives lasting hold, shine and weather protection with no stickiness. I also recommend using the Philip Kingsley Vented Paddle Brush, a large wooden paddle brush for a smooth finish. www.philipkingsley.com

LATEST TRENDS TOP NEW RANGES, TREATMENTS AND NEWS FROM THE WORLD OF MAKEUP, SKINCARE AND FRAGRANCE Fighting the frizz As I said before, we are going for volume, not frizz. Nobody banishes frizz better than John Frieda. How many of you own the Frizz-Ease Hair Serum? Ah, ha. See my point! There are three new additions to the Frizz-Ease collection. The Heat Defeat Protective Spray is for all ladies with an obsessive GHD problem. It not only protects hair from heat damage but also actually improves hair condition. Wonder how salons always get your hair looking über sleek? They use straightening products. Try Straight Fixation Smoothing Crème for a flawless, straight style. Finally, if you are a curly locks then Style Curldefining Spray Gel sculpts and defines curls to create a beautiful soft, bouncy style. www.johnfrieda.co.uk

Beating hair loss As women age, their hair also starts to thin and lose volume, especially during the menopause. Nioxins System Three, for fine, chemically enhanced, normal to thinlooking hair, delivers essential nutrients onto the scalp which improves the appearance of thinning hair and creates an environment for fuller, healthier-looking hair. One of Reflections’ clients told me first-hand that she had been using the cleanser, scalp therapy and scalp treatment after a dramatic hair loss due to the menopause. She absolutely swears by it. These fresh, minty lotions tingle on application. I love a product that you can actually feel working. Stockists: Reflections, Tel. 902 325 324

Shine on Healthy hair is, of course, shiny hair and we all know that coloured blonde hair is anything but. So, ladies, we have to fake it. Mop Glisten Shine Drops are the way to go. Extracts of organic oatstraw, horsetail and aloe add reflection and silkiness to otherwise low-lustre hair. This product really did make my hair shiny, smells delicious and doesn’t weigh it down. It hides my spilt ends as well (not that I have any, of course). This product works well with their C- System Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner. They also don’t contain Sodium Laureth Sulphate so great for those who want to use more natural products. For more information on Modern Organic Products: Tel. 0044 1282 613 413

Natural hair care I love Green People’s Sun Care and have been dying to try their hair products. My facialist (a fellow organic freak) will use nothing else. Their Intensive Repair range was voted “best hair treatment” by Natural Health & Beauty magazine. The shampoo with organic geranium and sandalwood does not strip out the colour and the matching conditioner smells beautiful. To give your hair more body try their Aloe Vera Styling Gel enriched with natural vitamins and proteins. This natural hair care range is made without SLS/SLES, parabens, phthalates and artificial fragrances, to bring you the purest shampoo that nature can offer. www.greenpeople.co.uk

Innovative nourishment New to the coast is the Z.One Concept range, a truly innovative, fashion forward brand, which is only stocked at The English Cut. If your hair is a bit frazzled and needing some TLC, why not try their Milkshake, Sun & More range. The all-over shampoo (it’s a body moisturiser as well) smells of exotic holidays, while the beauty mask is a formula of almond oil, rice oil, Maracuja oil, cotton proteins, hydrating agents, vitamin E and sun filters that deeply protect and nourish hair. Last, but not least, don’t forget to protect your hair while out in the sun. It’s just as important as your skin. “Pleasure oil” protects skin and hair from the sun, salt, wind and chlorine. How fab is this? If you buy two products from the Sun & More range, you will receive a bright, yellow parasol for the beach as a gift. Can’t ask for more than that can you? Magda Skin Care & Beauty Clinic

alking into Magda Skin Care and Beauty Clinic you instantly feel calm and forget the hustle and bustle of the outside world. Peaceful and welcoming, the salon, which was established in 1997, offers a variety of treatments that are sure to get you back on track to feeling beautiful. Owner Magda Welters is a qualified nurse and beauty technician and when she talks you through a treatment you instantly know you are in capable hands, ensuring you can lie back and enjoy any of the luxurious treatments on offer at the salon. For those looking to give themselves a little lift with younger and better looking skin there are two great treatments to try which are sure to leave you smiling without barely a wrinkle in sight. The Glykopeel is an exfoliating peel for skin regeneration which removes surface imperfections and stimulates cell renewal. Recommended for four peels with a 10 to 15day gap in between, which is then repeated two or three times a year, the peel reaches the underlying layers of the skin and stimulates collagen and elastin production. The peel is a glycolic acid with plant extracts such as Kojic acid and Bearberry, which are great for making pigment spots fade and which slow down the production of melanin in the skin; white mulberry is also added because of its inflammatory properties, while the Vitamins A, C and E are all antioxidants. The Glykopeel is a new generation of skin peel because the skin doesn’t actually peel like other peels; this is better for the skin as it will be less sensitive and clients are able to carry on with everyday life a lot easier than before – great for living in the sun.

A CALMING EXPERIENCE 84

www.societylivingmagazine.com

The peel has many characteristics that are very appealing for sufferers of bad skin as it evens pigmentation and skin tone and is good for acne, while producing cells that make the skin healthier. Mesotherapy is a treatment that is great for anti-ageing; it uses barely perceptible microinjections to tackle skin ageing at the base and contains a mix of natural hyaluronic acid and 55 active ingredients that are injected into the upper levels of the skin to improve the quality of mature skin and slow down future ageing for younger skin. The treatment is recommended for a course of six treatments with 10 days in between, which is then repeated every three to six months depending on the skin and the products the client would use at home. Mesotherapy gives the skin a glow and is good for the small wrinkles; it hydrates the skin and evens pigmentation. Metabolic processes in the skin are activated at the base by the treatment and there is an increase in the production of collagen and elastin from an impulse to the connective tissue, making the skin firmer and younger looking, something which many of us are keenly seeking.

CONFIDENCE IN A TRUE PROFESSIONAL had for many years thought about the idea of having breast enlargement surgery. However, I was always very afraid of the whole process as I am not too keen on operations. When I moved to Marbella the fact that the weather is so much better than in my home town back in Germany meant I was able to wear summer clothes a lot more throughout the year. But I was very conscious of my then small breasts; I was not confident enough, and the idea was on my mind a lot more than before. I had a great opportunity when the German television station RTL was planning to come to Marbella to film a series of documentaries. I was extremely happy to be chosen by the company to be part of the programme. One day after we had finished filming the documentaries, all the crew were sitting together and we began to talk about many things. One question asked of me was, what was I planning to do with the money from the documentaries? I automatically replied, “I will get my breast enlargement, which I have been wanting to do for some time.” As this answer came out, I realised I was now completely ready to go ahead with the surgery. Later, the film production manager asked if I would be happy for the surgery process to be filmed as part of the documentaries. At first, as you can imagine, I was shocked and not too comfortable with the idea, especially as I was about to be featured on public television. I was very worried. However, after much consideration I decided to go ahead with the idea. I then had to find my surgeon. I had been to a few who I had heard of, and a few who I had been referred to by friends, but to my disappointment I was not completely happy with any of the surgeries and people I visited. One day, after speaking to another friend who told me about Dr Aslani, I immediately called his office and made an appointment for

a consultation. On the day, we began our consultation and from the moment we started speaking I knew he was the surgeon for me. Why? Because he made me feel very comfortable and explained everything in great depth. Obviously he also explained the dangers, but throughout the whole consultation he made me feel very confident and happy. At the end, I was ready to book my surgery date with Dr Aslani. We arranged it for the end of July; and the whole process was great, with minimum pain. Now, nearly one year after my surgery, I am 100 per cent satisfied with the results as I feel that my breasts are very natural looking and I feel completely happy within myself. I would recommend anyone who is in the same position to go ahead. I never realised the results and process would be so good; otherwise I would have done it much sooner! ■ Cirumed Clinic Marbella Tel. 952 775 346 / 607 307 515 office@cirumed.es www.cirumed.es

The region of Valencia and the north of the Costa Blanca had, and still have, an extensive area of rice fields, rich soil which was always generous in producing fresh vegetables, and knowledgeable farmers who raised plump chickens and rabbits, Valencia used these quality local products to make paella. Add to this its coastal situation and the abundance of seafood and shellfish and you have the true Spanish paella which, of course, you have to make with Spanish olive oil. The correct utensil is important and you need to invest in a proper Paella pan. This is a special low border pan about three centimetres deep with dips in the central part like a golf ball and two rather large handles on each side. These pans measure from 15 centimetres to over 70 centiimetres, and are used for special occasions for hundreds of people to eat from. And here size is very important, as knowing the amount of people who will be eating enables you to choose the correct pan. If you want to cook the traditional, authentic paella what better way to entertain friends than cooking it over an open barbecue as was done originally and which ensures the flavour is especially good. Today there are so many versions of paella – a mixture of meat and fish, vegetarian, etc. – but the following is the original Valencian paella recipe using the ingredients that came from the region. It might not seem like the paellas you eat in Spanish restaurants, but it is worth trying, for once you have mastered the technique then you can change it around and adapt it according to your own version.

Valencian Paella (serves 4) Ingredients: I medium sized chicken 1 medium sized rabbit 2 ripe tomatoes, chopped 165 gr wide green beans (Bachoqueta) 130 gr large white lima beans (Garrafon) 2 strands of saffron 1 teaspoon sweet red pepper (pimenton dulce) 300 gr Spanish rice (medium, not long grain) 800 ml chicken broth olive oil to cover bottom of the pan salt to taste ■ Heat the oil in the pan until hot and cut the chicken and rabbit into portions and lightly salt it. Then fry the meat until lightly browned. Add the white and green beans and cook them together with the meat. While they are cooking, make a space in the middle of the paella pan and fry the chopped tomatoes until they become soft, then stir in the saffron and paprika. Pour in the stock until it reaches almost to the top of the paella pan’s edge. ■ Cook all the ingredients over a high heat for around 20 minutes and then taste to see if you need to add more salt. ■ Now stir in the rice and make sure that the liquid is well distributed throughout the pan so that the rice is well covered, and cook for a further 20 minutes on a high heat so that the rice boils gently. But do not stir: just move the pan around so that the heat gets to all parts of the pan.

■ All the stock should have been absorbed by this time so remove the pan from the heat, cover and leave to stand for around 10 minutes. After this time, check that the rice grains are properly cooked: i.e loose and not clumped together or mushy in texture. ■ Decorate with wedges of lemon around the edge and sprigs of rosemary in the centre and you are ready to serve. And if you want to be truly authentic pass around wooden spoons so everyone can eat directly from the pan. Once you have mastered this basic method it is up to you to add and change ingredients as you like. Adding seafood and shellfish, in my opinion, really enhances the flavour. But please look after your paella pan by cleaning it as soon as possible after use and then rubbing it with vegetable oil. That way it will last for years. Incidentally if you ever pull out your pan and it has begun to rust, don’t panic. Simply wash and rub with a soapy steel wool pad to remove the rust. Then rub with oil to season again. So now let’s try a shellfish paella. Then you can combine the two recipes by mixing the meat with the fish. Always remember that as “paella” is also said to have originated in the “campo” when workers cooked whatever they had to hand, you don’t have to use the exact ingredients and can substitute them for something similar: i.e. if you cannot get hold of fresh shellfish you can use frozen fish, but use fish stock instead of water to increase the flavour.

TASTES OF SPAIN

Shellfish Paella (serves 4 to 6) Ingredients: 1 medium onion, finely chopped 1 green pepper, finely chopped 1/2 red pepper, boiled until soft and then cut into long thin strips 2 tomatoes, skinned and finely chopped 2 carrots, finely chopped 100 gr frozen peas 200 gr prawns, 200 gr clams, 200 gr squid 12 mussels, 350 gr round grain rice, 2 cloves garlic, peeled and coarsely chopped good pinch of saffron strands 1 tablespoon finely chopped parsley olive oil approx. 800 ml water

■ First you have to prepare the fish: wash the mussels, removing any of the beards, and make sure you discard any that do not close up when in contact with the water. ■ Rub the dark outer skin off the fresh squid. Pull out the insides (including the transparent back bone) and remove the eye from the tentacles. Cut into pieces. ■ Wash the clams in water and then put in a bowl of salted water and leave to stand so that the grit comes out. Again, discard any that do not open. ■ Wash the prawns well and if you prefer you can peel them. But save the shells and boil in water for about 10 minutes. Then drain off and substitute the cooking liquid for the water. ■ Grind the garlic, saffron and parsley in a pestle and mortar with a pinch of salt. ■ Pour in enough olive oil to coat the pan and heat. Then add the onion, green pepper and carrots and fry gently for around five minutes. Lower the heat and add the tomatoes and squid and fry for 10 minutes. ■ Now stir in the rice, making sure that it is well coated in the ingredients before pouring in the water or fish stock. Add in the clams, mussels and the garlic, saffron and parsley mixture and bring to the boil. Season with salt, turn the heat right down and cook for another 10 minutes. ■ Stir in the prawns and peas and arrange the prawns and the strips of red pepper on top and cook on a low heat for another 10 minutes, checking from time to time that there is enough water, and adding more if you think it is getting too dry. But do not stir in: just shake the pan around to distribute it. ■ Once the rice is cooked and the mussels have opened, your paella is ready to eat and to enjoy accompanied, of course, by some wine. If you are not too keen on rice or just want a change now you have mastered the

art of cooking paella, how about trying fideuà, a very popular traditional main course similar to paella. Cooked in a paella pan, it is made with pasta instead of rice, using seafood cooked in fish broth. Using fideuà (found in all supermarkets in the pasta section) is quicker and easier than making paella, and is as colorful and flavorful as well, making it a perfect dish for dining and wining in the garden.

Fideuà (serves 6-8) Ingredients: 250 gr fish such as tuna or halibut 500 ml fish stock 250 gr prawns 250 gr small clams 10 mussels 250 gr squid 2 tomatoes, peeled and roughly chopped 4 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed in a pestle and mortar 2 dry red pepper pods 1/2 large red pepper, cut into thin strips 500 gr vermicelli pasta couple of saffron threads 4 to 6 tablespoons olive oil salt to taste ■ Prepare the shellfish and squid as in the previous recipe. Rinse the fish and cut into approximately five-centimetre cubes. ■ Place a 144-centimetre paella pan on the barbecue or hob and add enough olive oil to coat the bottom. When hot enough sauté the prawns and squid in the oil, adding more olive oil if necessary to prevent sticking. ■ Once the prawns have turned pink remove them and the squid to a bowl, leaving any remaining olive oil in the pan. ■ Place the paella pan on the barbecue grate and add enough olive oil to coat the bottom and allow the pan to heat up. When hot enough, sauté the shrimp and squid in the olive oil. ■ Add olive oil as needed to prevent sticking. Once the shrimp has cooked, it will turn pink. Remove the shrimp and squid from the pan and set aside. Leave the oil in the pan. ■ Now stir in the tomatoes, peppers, garlic and the red pepper pods and cook for around two minutes. Add the fish stock and saffron to the pan and bring to the boil. ■ Stir in the vermicelli and fish. Spread the clams, mussels and squid around the pan and arrange the prawns on top and cook for 15 minutes or until the pasta is “al dente”. Then remove from the heat, cover the pan with aluminum foil and leave to stand for five minutes before serving. www.societylivingmagazine.com

NIKKI BEACH Delectable cuisine for global gourmands

S

tarting a new job can be daunting, especially when it’s as executive chef at one of the Coast’s premier beach clubs, but for David Farber his new post at Nikki Beach was a great step on the career ladder. Renowned for its cuisine and atmosphere alike, Nikki Beach is the perfect place to relax, and enjoy a few cocktails and some sumptuously tasty delights. Now, with David at the helm and a new menu for the new season, Nikki Beach is certainly the place to go this summer. After studying at catering college, David got his first job at The Post House in Guilford before moving to London and taking a position at a prestigious restaurant in The Stafford Hotel, where he cooked for the royals and many celebrities. There, he met his Spanish wife and they decided to move to Spain. Travelling around Spain, David worked in many kitchens including another well-known restaurant on the Costa del Sol, before taking the executive chef position at Nikki Beach, where, he tells me, the team is 92

“young, professional and energetic”. The new menu maintains Nikki Beach’s “global cuisine” theme with a few twists from David. The Raw Bar and Sushi Menu is accompanied by appetisers such as Puerto Vallarta chicken quesadilla, salads including green tea smoked duck breast salad, sandwiches (New York mid-town steak sandwich) and entrées such as Nikki Beach’s hugely popular chicken satay, all of which have your mouth watering by just scanning the menu. We were lucky enough to taste some of the delights on the menu such as my favourite food, sushi, which included spicy tuna roll, Miami inside out smoked salmon roll, St Tropez shrimp tempura roll, cold river trout roll and tuna and salmon sashimi. David has used different rice so the sushi tastes light and fresh – delicious. The delectable caramelised watermelon with poached juicy jumbo prawns, mint, basil and white radish salad, succulent sweet chilli-lime sauce and mint oil epitomises summer with its mixture of sweet and savoury and stays in tune

in with the traditional Nikki cuisine; while the flavours from the Koh Samui chicken breast were amazing and made me want to savour every mouthful of the sesame seed crusted chicken, layered with crispy wonton crackers and Asian vegetables in a light coconut red chilli sauce. We finished the meal with a raspberry mojito crème brulee with lime sorbet and crushed raspberries which was creamy but light; the sorbet added a different dimension to the dish, cleansing the palate as it was eaten. We accompanied the meal with a couple of cocktails, the world famous Nikki Beach Mojito and a Koh Samui Slinger made from vodka, blackcurrant liquor and fresh passion fruit topped with Red Bull, a great accompaniment to delicious cuisine in stunning surroundings. ■ Nikki Beach Playa Hotel Don Carlos Marbella Tel. 952 836 239 www.nikkibeach.com

CHEF’S SELECTION

PASSION CAFÉ For people who are passionate about food WORDS SAM JONES PHOTOS DAVID TOMS

I

t’s one of those places that always seem to get it right, and it’s somewhere people seem to consistently like. No matter what the time or occasion, Passion Café, in San Pedro’s fashionable La Colonia commercial centre, remains a firm favourite on the Coast’s list of places to eat out, meet for coffee or drinks, or for business meetings, breakfasts, brunches and lunches. The restaurant is designed across various areas – which include a covered terrace, spacious interior divided by a centrepiece bar, and al fresco seating at the restaurant’s front – which provide plenty of seating whether you prefer to sit inside or out. The countless works of art and intricate accessories mean you’ll never tire of the funky, even eclectic, creative décor. Equally as colourful and creative at Passion Café is the excellent food, which is served from breakfast throughout the day and evening, and combines only the freshest and most healthy ingredients. The ample portions will certainly not disappoint, but that’s not to say the food is overbearing – rather, substantial and good value for money. The food at Passion Café has always carried a first-rate reputation but the addition of head chef Anna Ind, who joined the team two years ago, has driven the restaurant and menu in an even stronger direction. Anna – who has headed kitchens in some of the Coast’s most popular and successful restaurants – brings a new edge to the menu which, in addition to the extensive à la carte, includes a choice of mouth-watering daily specials, and irresistible freshly baked breads, cakes and muffins. Breakfast and brunch is a big feature at Passion Café, where the day begins with bacon and eggs on hot buttered toast; New York smoked salmon bagel with cream cheese, fresh tomato, lemon and dill; American style pancakes; full Irish breakfast (owner Malcolm Spendlove is the former proprietor of the famed Wicklow Arms in Delgany); the Passion Special, toasted homemade brown bread, poached eggs, bacon and sweet tomato relish; omelettes which come in a choice of varieties (roasted cherry tomato and rocket, brie, ham, mushroom, spinach, onion…); homemade 94

www.societylivingmagazine.com

granola; mixed berries with yoghurt, honey and roasted over; and the Passion Fresh Fruit Bowl. The saying “spoilt for choice” doesn’t even come close as the day unfolds with a generous selection of starters, sandwiches, quesadillas, fajitas, wok dishes and salads. Popular choices include the salmon and dill caper fish cakes (served as a starter or main); garlic and chilli marinated haloumi; Mexican prawn or chicken teriyaki quesadilla with salsa, chilli jam and guacamole; and creative salads including the crispy smoked duck salad (a personal favourite) with gorgonzola, poached pears, caramelised walnuts, spinach, cucumber, lollo rosso, basil, chives and spring onion. Admittedly, it is the sort of place you find yourself repeatedly ordering your favourite but, believe me, it’s well worth experimenting with the fantastic menu. And if you simply can’t decide, you can’t possibly go wrong with something from the daily specials which, on my last visit, offered tempting combinations such as grilled langoustines with a shredded fennel, radish and beetroot salad, with apple, spring onion and mint; balsamic-glazed lamb chops with Greek salad, chickpeas and salsa verde; and a succulent hamburger with bacon, gorgonzola cream, green salad, and rosemaryspiced fries which smelt divine. People have tended to associate Passion Café with daytime

dining over the years. Okay, so it might serve one of the best breakfasts in town, but evenings at Passion Café are proving particularly popular these days with an international menu, interesting wine list, good service and pleasant ambience – which is a true fine dining experience. Appetising starters on the evening menu include sesame, honey and chilli langoustine skewers; peppered beef carpaccio; and Thai roast duck spring rolls; while the delectable mains boast the popular lamb burger with garlic, ginger, coriander, mint raita and chunky chips; pancetta wrapped salmon; Indian spice crusted monkfish; Argentinean rib eye; fillet steak with mash and pepper sauce; and classic fish ‘n’ chips served with mushy peas, pickled onion and tartar sauce. The perfect finishing touch can be added to the evening with a Passion Café speciality cocktail or something from the list of homemade desserts which include passion fruit and orange cake with passion fruit syrup and vanilla mascarpone; warm sticky date and walnut cake with hot caramel sauce and ice cream; warm sunset apple cake; winter fruit crumble; hot chocolate fudge cake, chocolate brownie, dark chocolate brownie – and just about every indulgent combination imaginable!

iving on the Coast, you sometimes feel the need to get away from all the hustle and bustle and relax for a few hours – restaurant Sol I Luna is that place. Peaceful and tranquil, it seems like a million miles away from all the stress of everyday life but is in fact in the hills of Marbella. Owners Rolando and Daniel, who is also the chef, have had the restaurant for two years and have made it a place where, once you have been the first time, you want to go back again and again and again. Serving a fusion of Italian and Mediterranean cuisine, the menu offers delights such as tuna carpaccio and Sol i Luna salad (quail from the grill with crisp parma ham and peppers) to start, followed by soups, pasta dishes, a variety of fish including sea bass, crisp on a light lime sauce with dill, and meats such as lamb in olive oil coating and rosemary sauce. Greeted by friendly waiters who showed us to a table overlooking the pool on the terrace area, our mouths were watering as soon as we opened the menu. We chose a bottle of Coto Hayas white, which is the restaurant’s house wine; crisp and light it is a great accompaniment to any meal. We decided to go for the special menu as Rolando assured me that most people choose something off of it for their meal. We were treated to lobster cannelloni – which was jam-packed with flavours that exploded in the mouth – and a mozzarella, basil and sun-dried 96

www.societylivingmagazine.com

tomato mixed salad which was a great way to start a summer meal… light and simple yet tasty and delicious. For our main course we had hake with a fine herb sauce, which was so fresh and melted in the mouth; and white veal steak with a porcini mushroom sauce, which, having never tasted before, I would definitely recommend to any visitors to the restaurant. Watching desserts come out for other customers we definitely wanted to try some, but couldn’t decide which, so we had a selection of bite-size portions. Crème brulee flavoured with lavender – which my companion described as heavenly – cheesecake, tiramisu, strawberry mousse, fresh fruit, mango sorbet and mascarpone with berries which were delicious and cleansed the palate. A great way to end a superb meal. The restaurant also offers specialised nights for guests including a wine testing on the first Thursday of every month; a buffet menu every Saturday evening; and there is a special fourcourse menu for June which I will certainly be going to sample. ■ Sol I Luna Urb. NEWS UPDATE IN BRIEF

PROMOTING MARBELLA SPECIAL SONG FOR REVITALISED TOWN Marbella’s woes in recent years have been well-documented, but the Spanish capital of glamour is back with a vengeance. One of the most recent, and empowering, initiatives aimed at restoring Marbella’s prestige was the A Night for Marbella event at the Da Bruno Sul Mare restaurant (see Society, P.26), which coincided with the official presentation of a song specially written for the occasion, Marbella, Marbella. The original song was written by author, artist, musician and composer Dario Poli. He and his sister Delia won a major British talent TV show in 1977, and the duo went on to perform around the world, working alongside such stars as Olivia Newton John, Dave Allen, Buddy Greco and Bruce Forsythe. To date he has written more than 200 songs, and cowrote Lady X and the Power of Destiny, a two-act musical drama, loosely based on the late Diana, Princess of Wales which was created before her death, registered in Marbella, recorded in Dublin by a symphony orchestra and singers (some from Riverdance) and produced by Richard Pine. At the end of 2008 record producer and musician Roberto Danova released the CD Nostradamus, cowritten with Dario, on the Plaza Label, featuring guitarist Steve Z. Poli’s “fight to defend the reputation of the Costa del Sol” began in Sweden in April 2007, when he saw a CCN TV documentary on

Marbella and the Costa del Sol which “painted a very negative image”. “Outraged by the one-sided depiction”, he decided to write the music for a song, Marbella, Marbella, expressing his affection for the town and the Costa del Sol. He registered the music and title in Malaga then added the lyrics with singer Alan De Ward. Scottish arranger and producer Davis Mairs recorded De Ward in his studio in Fuengirola, as well as a version with singer Samantha Mairs. Keen to engage Spaniards in the campaign, he was introduced to Marbella-based Cuban singer-pianist Yanela Brooks by Princess Marie-Louis of Prussia. Yanela offered to write the lyrics in Spanish, and coarranged this version with her husband, top Spanish session and touring band guitarist Juan Calleja. In February this year Yanela presented Poli with a basic recording of the song in Spanish, including the new musical arrangements and, with the help of Danish artist Mugge Fischer (Artenovum), who designed the CD cover, they decided to organise an event that would formally present the song and campaign. After hearing the song and concept, Bruno and Giuseppina Filippone offered to support the campaign by hosting the launch of “Una Noche Para Marbella” at their Da Bruno Sul Mare restaurant. Mugge Fischer describes the campaign as “presenting a concept of image and quality for our city and the Costa del Sol. We all form part of the image and future of Marbella.” Dario says his aim is that ‘‘Marbella, Marbella’’ will be played all over Europe to help Marbella and the Costa del Sol recover from the bad publicity that has plagued it over many years”. His philosophy is: “If you do not fight for what you have, you do not deserve to have it.” (Photo of Yanela, Juan Calleja and another great promoter of Marbella, Kristina Szekely, by David Toms; photo of Dario by Diana Sutton)
