The refined pleasures of autumn

52

I

t might be autumn now, with the main summer soirees well behind us, but that doesn’t mean all the fun has to stop. From top international polo in Sotogrande – with British royals and Spanish aristocrats in the VIP stands – to a stunning end-ofseason beach club party, and the glamour of a venerable golf club’s 50th anniversary celebrations… Society Living once again features the crème de la crème of Costa del Sol society at play. For our cover fashion shoot this month, we decided to move a little further afield than normal, and have some fun with a London-style look in the charmingly retro settings of Gibraltar; while, back on the Coast, we hit the road in a gracefully tranquil Rolls-Royce Phantom coupé to show that – crisis aside – there is still demand for the ultimate in exclusivity. For the ultimate in burlesque, no one matches the irrepressible Dita Von Teese, who talks exclusively to Society Living about the real woman behind her iconic pin-up allure. On the golf fairways, meanwhile, few have matched Paul Casey’s exploits this year, including his first US PGA title, and – as world number three – he will head the field for this month’s Volvo World Match Play at Finca Cortesín. He talks to us about his rise to the elite of world golf and his goals for the future, including a breakthrough in the majors. Elsewhere this issue, our health, fitness and beauty specialists offer valuable tips on how to lose weight “the French way”, and where to find the best products on the Coast; our fine dining pages feature two top restaurants offering exquisite Asian cuisine; and our “Tech World” section highlights the latest state-of-the-art gadgets from around the world. Finally, we have been so delighted by the ongoing positive response to the magazine that we asked some advertising clients, key distribution outlets and readers to let us know why they believe Society Living is the most popular English-speaking magazine on the Coast. You can read their comments on Page 30 and – as always – we also welcome your feedback, about both the printed magazine and the pacesetting digital version online (www.societylivingmagazine.com).

GLAMOUR DIGEST LONDON INSPIRATION FOR MODERN MEN Internationally renowned jewellery designer Stephen Webster has created a men’s silver collection called “London Calling” which was inspired by the “unique make up of London”, Stephen’s home city. He drew his inspiration from buildings, ironwork and gargoyles, as well as characters from the city (some real, some myth and some fictional) such as The Artful Dodger, Jack the Ripper and Sweeney Todd, plus his favourite London band The Clash. The contemporary collection includes dog tags, stone-studded bullet pendants and gargoyle-inspired rings, while the iconic raven’s head also features heavily, representing the tale that at least six ravens must remain at the Tower of London or the monarchy will fall. Known for his unconventional designs, Stephen’s “London Calling” collection comprises “all the pieces of jewellery a modern man would need”. FROM MARANELLO TO… HONG KONG Our own Marbella has long been recognised as one of the international capitals of Ferrari enthusiasts – but could there be some serious competition from the other side of the world! In a special ceremony on Victoria Harbour earlier this year, the 1,000th Ferrari sold in Hong Kong – in this case, a flagship 612 Scaglietti “One to One” – was handed over to its new owner, Didier Li, on board the Chinese junk “Huan”. Last year the Prancing Horse company delivered 115 Ferraris to the former British colony, out of an Asia Pacific region total of 1,089. Japan led the way with 433, while more than 200 were delivered to China for the first time. 10

SUPPORT FOR MALARIA CAMPAIGN Victoria Beckham became the latest celebrity to wear a piece of Stephen Webster’s glam rock jewellery when she arrived at Heathrow airport sporting the Mosquito Ring. Famed for his unique and stunning cutting edge designs, Stephen created this piece to raise funds for the new charity Malaria No More UK and to support the Malaria Awareness Campaign. Victoria said the ring was “a fabulous statement piece” and she had loved wearing it, while Stephen commented that the one-of-a-kind ring was designed for an important cause. Fashioned in rhodium plated white gold set with ruby cabochons, white diamond wings, a silver diamond tail and a black diamond band the ring will be sold to the highest bidder, with an anticipated price of £15,000. www.stephenwebster.com www.malarianomore.org.uk

The fight against human trafficking is ongoing, and often not fully appreciated by those unaffected by the tragic plight of its victims. Dangerous Goods have created a collection of jewellery, including this necklace called “Not For Sale”, to try to help the hundreds of women and children who, every year, are transported to Sweden for sexual slavery. Nina B boutique in Nueva Andalucía stocks these necklaces and, from every sale, five euros will go to Collaboration Against Trafficking. This organisation enables women to regain control of their lives and helps any of the children left behind when their mothers were forced into slavery. We can all make a difference and help in the fight against one of the fastest-growing criminal industries in the world. Nina B, Nueva Andalucía: Tel. 952 907 020

LONDON CALLING City of London: The new board game, in aid of Lord Mayor’s Appeal Charities, is both fun to play and educational

T

he credit crunch has even hit Britain’s richest man. Steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal has put his handsome Hampstead house up for rent, after struggling to sell it for £40 million. The charming Indian gentleman is on the prowl for a well-heeled tenant to rent his Summer Palace in billionaires’ row for £10,000 a week, until he finds a buyer willing to cough up the dosh he’s asking. He’s not looking for a cheap sale, and is in no hurry to sell. Neighbours in The Bishops Avenue include members of the Brunei and Saudi Arabian royal families. Mr Mittal bought the property, set in an acre (0.4 hectares), 13 years ago for £6.75 million. The house features 11 bedrooms, 12 bathrooms, six reception rooms and a glass lift, descending to a basement with a swimming pool, jacuzzi and steam room. The Mittal family don’t have to slum it though: they now live in Formula 1 tycoon Bernie Ecclestone’s 15-bedroom home in Kensington, having bought it from the racing supremo in 2004 for £57 million.

Summer Palace would be a marvellous rental home for the likes of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie or Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas, if they wanted to spend some time in the capital. The property gives them the privacy they crave, and £10,000 a week is a sum they can easily afford! ■ A new board game called City of London, in aid of the Lord Mayor’s Appeal Charities, has become a surprise hit. The aim of the game is to reach the Mansion House and become Lord Mayor of the City of London. To get there, players have to secure ward seats, win elections, take on the role of freeman, and be the first sheriff to progress to Lord Mayor. Like Trivial Pursuit, you need to correctly answer multiple-choice questions, but this time about the City, its culture and well-known landmarks. The game is played on a map of the City, featuring its 25 wards, Old Bailey, Guildhall, the Mansion House and other places on the route taken by the Lord Mayor’s Show.

It was created by Jack Berkovi, who works for accountancy firm Grant Thornton, and is a friend of Ian Luder, Lord Mayor of London. “I was inspired by all the work Ian does,” Jack told me, “and his passion for the City. I wanted it to be fun but also educational – so people can learn more about London.” It’s great fun for two to four players, costs £30, and is available from Harrods or John Lewis (www.johnlewis.com) ■ Richard Anderson is one of the most elegantly dressed men I’ve ever seen. He’s a celebrated Savile Row bespoke tailor, who makes suits for the likes of Bryan Ferry, Sir Ian McKellen, Keifer Sutherland, boy band Westlife, Bernicio De Toro and Simon Cowell. He’s now written his autobiography, Bespoke: Savile Row Ripped and Smoothed (Simon & Shuster, £14.99), a marvellously entertaining and informative look behind the scenes of London’s most famous street of men’s tailoring. Richard arrived at Savile Row as a 17-year-old apprentice with Huntsman tailors, considered to be the grandest, stuffiest and priciest tailor

LONDON CALLING Katherine Jenkins: Pops into Whole Foods emporium in Kensington for organic food

Richard Anderson: Elegant author of Bespoke: Savile Row Ripped and Smoothed, takes us behind the scenes of London’s most famous street of men’s tailoring

on the Row, in 1982. He was paid the threadbare sum of £2,000 a year. He climbed the ladder of success there, but decided to resign in 2000, when a buy-out of the firm by a consortium of investors, who wore cycling shorts instead of suits to board meetings, offended his strict sartorial standards. The next year he opened Richard Anderson Ltd, Savile Row’s youngest bespoke tailoring house, where he is the master cutter and managing director. His tales of clothes encounters with Hollywood legends like Katherine Hepburn, Gregory Peck, Rex Harrison, Paul Newman and David Niven are deliciously gossipy. Hepburn insisted on having trousers made so wide they flapped when she walked. “She blamed her taste,” writes Anderson, “on the likelihood of shrinkage by those damn dry-cleaners in America.” ■ When the Kensington emporium Whole Foods opened in June 2007, to an avalanche of publicity, with celebrities like Jason Donovan, Lulu, Claudia Schiffer, Laura Bailey, Jo Wood and Katherine Jenkins among the buyers, I couldn’t see how the 80,000 square foot (7,4000 square metre) giant three-storey store could be profitable. I thought that John Mackey, the American founder, who has a passion for expensive organic food, was pricing himself out of the market in his bid to take on Waitrose and Marks & Spencer.

For once, I was right. Now, two years on, the US owners have already had to write-off close to £50 million, and there are still no signs of a second large Whole Foods appearing in London. The store is simply too large. They badly underestimated how much British shoppers depend on their cars when they do a big weekly shop, and there is no on-site parking, only expensive car parks nearby. We’re in the midst of a credit crisis, and witnessing the end of Britain’s love affair with expensive organic food. I just don’t think that making changes like adding a wellness centre and a regular cooking school event is going to put more dosh in the coffers. ■ The May Fair Hotel in Stratton Street was the official hotel for last month’s London Fashion Week. Their trendy bar was packed with Jimmy Choo-heeled fashionistas, knocking back cocktails after a hard day’s night of shows and parties. w w w. s o c i e t y l i v i n g m a g a z i n e . c o m

Little Lamb: One of Chinatown’s most popular restaurants, and runner-up in last year’s Time Out’s Food & Drinks Awards for best budget eats in the capital

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie: Would feel at home renting Lakshmi Mittal’s luxurious Hampstead house

I was having a drink with a Manhattan maven, who said she fancied a martini. “What’s this May Fair Martini, honey?” she asked the bartender. “Oh, that’s very special,” he said. “It’s made with a Richard Hennessey cognac that was bottled in the 1880s, and costs £150.” “Who would be dumb enough to pay that amount of money for a single drink?” she demanded to know. Well, no sooner did she say that, than a gaggle of Z-list rock people stormed in, and ordered magnums of the dearest champagne, and 10 rounds of May Fair Martinis. We made our excuses, and quickly left to stroll round the corner to the more civilised atmosphere and prices at The Rivoli Bar at The Ritz. ■ What an incredible large crowd turned out at Selfridges to see Scarlett Johansson, who was making a personal appearance to launch the new Dolce & Gabbana cosmetic collection. advertising campaign, but in the flesh she looked enchantingly pretty, sporting soft, wavy red tresses, and was fetchingly dressed in a short-sleeved printed blouse and straight skirt. She posed for photographers in true red carpet style, and gave huge smiles to the adoring fans, who were snapping away like mad on their digital cameras, mobiles and camcorders. The talented actress was charming to all, thanked everyone for coming, declared herself a fan of the golden world of Hollywood, and said how flattered she was to be asked by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana to be the face of their make-up range. After talking with her I thought that Hollywood should do a remake of Gentleman Prefer Blondes, casting Scarlett in the Marilyn Monroe role, and Catherine ZetaJones as her dark-haired, wise-cracking friend, originally played by Jane Russell. I think that their agents should call Harvey Weinstein pronto and pitch the idea! ■ If you’re a fan of Chinese food, and watching your pennies, then book your 99p Dim Sum Basket at the Golden Harvest restaurant in Gerard Street, in the heart of London’s Chinatown. The offer is limited to one basket per person, and is filled with tempting treats such as prawn, spinach and siu mai pork dumplings; pork spare ribs in black bean sauce; glutinous rice roll with Chinese sausage; and a soft drink or half-pint of Sun Lik beer. Another good restaurant for Chinese food is the Little Lamb in Chinatown, which was the runner-up for best budget eats in Time Out’s Eating & Drinking Guide. ■ London’s first annual restaurant festival runs this month, from 8 to 13 October, and promises diners a unique celebration of the capital’s food scene, with award-winning chefs like Theo Randall, Rowley Leigh, Sally Clarke and Marcus Wareing participating. Over 1,000 restaurants are taking part, offering special festival menus, and novelties such as a restaurant on the roof of Selfridges. Covent Garden is the hub of the festival, and the main point of contract for information and tickets. There will be a supplier’s market and food and wine tastings throughout the week. The wheels on the much talked about ATeam project have finally started rolling. This was originally a very popular TV show during the 1980s in which MR. T made a name for himself playing Sgt. B.A. Baracus. That role will now be portrayed by the former UFC world light heavyweight champion QUINTON “RAMPAGE” JACKSON. The story tells of four war vets wrongly accused of armed robbery who escape military prison to become an elite band of dogood mercenaries. The other three are played by LIAM NEESON, BRADLEY COOPER and

BIG SCREEN SHARLTO COPLEY, who is much in demand thanks to his recent role in District 9. Talking of District 9, director NEILL BLOMKAMP has said there will be a sequel but he also wants to make a separate prequel involving Wikus Van De Merwe (SHARLTO COPLEY), the MNU field operative who contracted a mysterious virus that changed his DNA. He quickly became the most hunted man in the world, as well as the most valuable – as his new DNA could be the key to unlocking the secrets of the alien’s technology. In its first month of release District 9 grossed $122,853,708 worldwide. HELEN MIRREN starts filming this month for the drama Brighton Rock. A waitress (ANDREA RISEBOROUGH) plans to blackmail SAM RILEY (Control) over a gangland revenge killing. MIRREN and her husband (PETER POSTLETHWAITE) play a married couple out to expose his past exploits. BRUCE CAMPBELL, who has had small roles in all three of the Spider-Man movies, has been promised a major part in the next one. The actor, who recently supplied a voice for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, is being sized up for the role of the villain Mysterio. BRUCE WILLIS has been invited to make a cameo appearance in the SYLVESTER STALLONE all-star action jamboree The Expendables. As reported in the May issue another ‘80s icon, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, will appear as himself and there is even talk that all three will appear on screen together in a film for the first time. They once had business connections when they were part of a consortium that launched the Planet Hollywood theme restaurant

franchise in 1991. The film tells of a team of mercenaries who head to South America on a mission to overthrow a dictator. Latest cast list includes JASON STATHAM, JET LI, DOLPH LUNDGREN, BEN KINGSLEY, SANDRA BULLOCK, ERIC ROBERTS, DANNY TREJO, BRITTANY MURPHY, MICKEY ROURKE, DAVID ZAYAS, RANDY COUTURE and former World Wrestling Federation Champion “STONE COLD” STEVE AUSTIN. STALLONE has said he will also be starring in and directing a fifth installment of the Rambo franchise. The Savage Hunt (working title) revolves around the all-action hero fighting human traffickers and drug lords to rescue a young girl abducted near the American-Mexican border. Production will start in the spring. And HARRISON FORD has revealed there will be a fifth Indiana Jones flick. A possible future blockbuster in the making has recently started filming in Hungary. The Eagle of the Ninth is a Roman epic adventure based in Scotland in 140 AD. A young centurion (CHANNING TATUM) and his British slave (JAMIE BELL) arrive from Rome to solve the mystery of the Ninth Legion, who vanished into thin air 20 years earlier. The two cross Hadrian’s Wall into the uncharted highlands of Caledonia to confront its savage tribes, find out what happened to his father, who was in charge of the army, and retrieve the lost legion’s golden emblem, the Eagle of the Ninth. DONALD SUTHERLAND plays the young Roman’s uncle and MARK STRONG is an exsoldier who holds crucial information about the missing Ninth.

Halloween is with us this month, as is the annual gore fest in the Saw series. This franchise first hit the silver screen in 2004 and every year since, on the Friday before “trick or treat night”, a new frightener has been released. If you don’t know what it’s all about, these cult horrors revolve around John Kramer (TOBIN BELL), also known as the “Jigsaw Killer”, who introduced himself to the public in the original Saw in 2004. This psycho does not kill his victims outright: he traps them in situations which he calls “tests” or “games” and pushes them to the limit, testing their will to live via physical and psychological torture. As in years gone by the storyline has been kept under wraps to keep everyone in suspense, except for the following press release. “Special Agent Strahm is dead, and Detective Hoffman (COSTAS MANDYLOR) has emerged as the unchallenged successor to Jigsaw’s legacy. However, when the FBI draws closer to Hoffman, he is forced to set a game into motion, and Jigsaw’s grand scheme is finally understood.” Box office-wise this franchise peaked with the third film in 2006, and if bums do not sit on seats for this one there’s a strong possibility that Jigsaw and his associates will torture and murder no more. Also stars SHAWNEE SMITH, MARK ROLSTON, BETSIE RUSSELL, PETER OUTERBRIDGE.

Music notes L

ast month STATUS QUO gave an excellent account of themselves in Gibraltar and were 10 times better than their performance at the Puerto Banús bullring in 1998. The boys have always been known for their sense of humour and while in Australia recently their tour bus hit a kangaroo. Curious members of the band and their entourage got off to have a nose at the motionless marsupial and some joker decided to put a QUO tour jacket on it to take a photo – to which the startled Skippy look-a-like popped up and hopped off into the bush, bringing a BENNY HILL end-ofshow type pursuit as the bus keys were in the jacket pocket. This Is It, the collection of JACKO clips when rehearsing for the planned 50 dates in London, hits cinemas worldwide, but only for a two-week period, from 28 October (obviously someone wants to get the DVD in the shops for Christmas). GIGS, GROUPS, GOSSIP... MICKY REYNOLDS BRINGS US UP TO DATE WITH ROCK SNIPPETS FROM AROUND THE WORLD believe that promoters AllGood Entertainment are still going to sue his estate over the planned family reunion gig. They claim he agreed not to perform live before their concert scheduled for next July and welshed on the deal when signing up for the 50 London concerts. The deceased singer’s twomonth reign at the top of the UK album charts came to an end when CALVIN HARRIS’ Ready For The Weekend went number one and the gobby Scot celebrated when on stage at the V Festival. He told the crowd he was “deaf in one ear” and some friends of mine who were present said they wished they had been deaf in both ears! He also told the audience he hadn’t touched alcohol since last year’s festival, when after drinking so

www.societylivingmagazine.com

much he couldn’t remember his own show – my friends said they wished they had been drunk, then they wouldn’t have remembered this show! It was on the cards – the pool running dry for OASIS. The legend that is IAN BROWN of STONES ROSES fame reckons the GALLAGHERs should now both go solo. The fellow Manc said, “What’s a shame is that they’re brothers. I would say go solo; I can heartily recommend it. It’s a fine way to be.” KING MONKEY himself says he would only reform the ROSES, who split in 1996, if all the proceeds went to youth clubs, and a reunion would only happen if the other band members agreed to his request. His new album, appropriately entitled My Way, came out on 28 September.

Is MADONNA on the way out? Her recent single, Celebration, didn’t make the UK’s Radio One play list; it’s the first time one of her songs has not made the allimportant list. The Definitive Greatest Hits, which features the song, is now available. One man who reckons he can help her is BASSHUNTER, who said, “Maybe Madonna can come and hang out with me and I could teach her a thing or two about a pop hit!” The Swedish DJ and singer released his new album Bass Generation on 28 September. So, as predicted last month, the winner of this year’s Mercury Prize was unknown to most of the universe. SPEECH DEBELLE is a 26-year-old hip hop star from south London who looked as shocked as the rest of the audience when she won the

BACKSTAGE PASS prestigious music accolade for her debut album Speech Therapy, which had never even appeared on the UK album chart. Even though, the week after, Amazon.co.uk announced that her album sales had gone up by 4,000 per cent. Is silly LILY ALLEN losing her barmy blog crown to ROBBIE WILLIAMS? (She is still twittering on – but does anybody take notice any more?) He writes, “I’m looking forward to working with TAKE THAT again” – just because GARY BARLOW told him his forthcoming album Reality Killed The Video Star was “great” (no offer from the band yet though). And he reckons the preceding single Bodies has “cosmic powers” and can restart clocks – cuckoo or what? And his recently bought UK house is haunted (or maybe its his alien friends) and he’s thinking of moving “Down Under”. Talking of Australia, on a recent trip a couple of radio show hosts asked LADY GA GA if there was any truth in the stories that she is a hermaphrodite, and witty comments a plenty followed. At the recent MTV Video Music Awards RUSSELL BRAND said, “If I pulled her pants down and found a little something extra there, I would hang my hat on it.” When questioned about her gender by the press at the airport when leaving Aus she laughed it off then boarded a flight to Bangkok. MUSE, who play in Madrid on 28 November (tickets from

www.livenation.es), celebrated their latest album The Resistance getting number one in the UK by doing a couple of gigs in their sleepy home town of Teignmouth in Devon (zzzzzzz been there and featured in the documentary) but there were several complaints from locals about the noise, litter, etc. One complaint came from an old people’s home as many of its residents were moaning that they couldn’t see the stage from their bedroom windows and wanted it moved so they could get a better view. Anyway, instead of an old folks’ home we will leave you in the old jokes home: did you hear about the bloke whose wife left him and took his BOB MARLEY CD collection and his satellite system? It was a case of no woman no Sky!

ALEXANDRA BURKE is launching her career with a new image and she’s looking good. Her new single Bad Boys is out on 12 October featuring US rapper FLO RIDA and an album, Overcome, is available a week later. It was originally due on the 26th but that would have meant a head-tohead against Three Words, the debut solo album from her mentor CHERYL COLE. How about this one: ALICE COOPER was recently banned from performing at Finland’s Tampere Arena by its owners, who decided to block his concert on the grounds

ARCTIC MONKEYS IN MADRID UK indie-pop band the ARCTIC MONKEYS will play live in Madrid next February as part of their world tour to promote their recently released “grown up” album Humbug. This third offering from the band is different from the past two releases – and has not been accepted in the same light – but it still topped the UK album charts in its first week of release. Here on the Coast, nothing really going on now the summer has gone – only Madrid offers any decent gigs: THE FRAY (6th), DREAM THEATRE (23rd), JAMES MORRISON (25th) and the BACKSTREET BOYS (31st). Madrid dates for your diary: SKUNK ANANSIE (5 November), THE PRODIGY (4 December) and SPANDAU BALLET (15 March 2010). Many have asked, how do you purchase tickets locally? Go to www.ticketmaster.es. that it goes against “Christian values”. If you didn’t know, ALICE is a “born again” Christian. The Queenof Burlesque DITA IN THIS EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW FOR SOCIETY LIVING, NICOLA MCGEORGE STRIPS BARE THE MODERN MISTRESS OF BURLESQUE, DITA VON TEESE

A

n iconic performer. Unique. Refined. Playful. Self-created Dita Von Teese regularly tops the best-dressed lists with her signature old Hollywood pin-up glamour style, yet she is best known for her sizzling modern-day burlesque routines. She put the tease back into striptease. Dita explains, “It began when I was photographed 1940s pin-up style in 1991 and, while researching pin-ups, I noticed that the girls that posed for pin-ups in the men’s magazines of that era were mostly burlesque

dancers. I saw the connection and wanted to elaborate on it, to see if it could become relevant in modern times. I also felt that there was a stereotype now about what beauty and sexy is and I wanted to show another way other than the au naturel, simplistic forms of beauty we often see.” Von Teese’s shows are alluring works of art, famously including bathing herself in an oversized champagne or martini glass (complete with strawberry or olive sponge, respectively), a giant lipstick and even a claw foot bathtub with working showerhead.

’’

She once performed naked, save for $5 million of diamonds, for a benefit show at the New York Academy of Art. “My favourite prop is not that big martini glass... it’s become too easy and I suppose it must be how it feels for Britney Spears to sing Oops I Did It Again – again. I would be happy if some attention could be put on one of my dozen other acts, to be honest, because I think they’re more interesting, elaborate and artistic. I like my opium den set the best and maybe also my big powder compact. I feel more accomplished in creating these acts that are completely unique to burlesque.” Born Heather Renee Sweet in Michigan in 1972, she adopted the name Dita as a tribute to silent film actress Dita Parlo, and her breakthrough 2002 Playboy cover gave her the last name Von Teese. Naturally blond, this mid-western girl set about transforming herself from an early age. “I had a fascination with movies from the ‘40s and ‘50s since I was a little girl,” she recalls. “I think that the retro look works for me because I truly love it, and therefore it gives me confidence... and confidence is part of what makes a person attractive. I also have an admiration for artifice and I think that creating beauty can also be a form of artistry. The 1940s and ‘50s is definitely a time when glamour was at its height, and the icons of that era were definitely NOT about looking natural. They were painted, coiffed and dressed to kill!” Aptly named a burlesque super heroine by Vanity Fair, she has put her marriage to the self-proclaimed “Antichrist Superstar” Marilyn Manson far behind her. Now a permanent fixture at high-profile events, including those for designers such as Marc Jacobs, Christian Louboutin, Louis Vuitton, Chopard, and Cartier, she is seducing the world, but what does she believe she has given to the world of burlesque? “I’m sure there are people that think I’ve contributed in good ways and in bad ways. A lot of burlesque performers hate it when I say that burlesque is the same thing as stripping, just fancier! But you know, I’ve worked in strip clubs, and I would rather be the first person to dismiss what I do as frivolity than go around claiming that what I do is ‘art’. Gypsy Rose Lee used the term ‘stripper’ and so if it’s good

enough for her, it’s good enough for me! I suppose other burlesque dancers get frustrated when I say this but, then again, a lot of them are glad it’s in the press because it gives them a reference when someone doesn’t understand what burlesque is or how striptease can be relevant now.” A momentous occasion in her career was appearing on the cover of Playboy. “Well, it was a dream come true; Playboy is iconic. It was a great experience, and it’s actually what first got me mainstream attention. It was the moment all the work I had been doing since 1992 started to pay off in ways I never thought could. I never, ever thought I could be on the cover of Playboy. It was a very cool cover, totally different for Playboy, and it showcased my burlesque shows and my personal style.” Von Teese truly is a paragon of style from her perfectly coiffed raven hair to her seamed-stockinged toes. She is a red carpet favourite yet, considering that behind every fashion icon stands their über stylist, it is incredible to learn that she styles herself. “Styling myself is what made me. I don’t need a stylist; I enjoy choosing my clothes. Heck, I even like safety-pinning the dresses to fit! I KNOW what looks good on me and I get a

lot of satisfaction from stepping out on those major red carpets and knowing all the work, including hair and makeup, is my own. Meanwhile, everyone else has this crazy expensive glam squad. I can nail down the difference between what women wore in 1942 and what they wore in 1946. It’s probably a useless talent unless you’re styling for period films, but I’m kind of obsessed. I would rather spend the money on something else! And designers admire me for NOT having a stylist; that’s how I manage to wear the haute couture and things they don’t even let most stylists take.” With her fascination for corsets and her 18-inch (45-centimetre) waist it was inevitable that she would soon be courted by the big names in the world of lingerie. She appeared in an Agent Provocateur kinky music video, set within a fantasy presidential office with dominatrix Dita toying with her political enemies. Since 2009 she has been designing her own collection Wonderbra. “I suppose lingerie appealed to me from a very young age, like six or seven. I used to get into my mother’s lingerie drawer. It had nothing to do with sex or seduction, but everything to do with a right of passage as a woman. I wanted to be in that club. When I was 15, I started working in a lingerie store. I would study different eras of lingerie and collect vintage lingerie. My love of lingerie is what got me into being photographed and performing burlesque. I wanted to show it off!” Close to Dita’s heart is her charity work. She has appeared in an animal rights campaign for PETA and is a prominent spokeswoman in the fight against HIV and AIDS. “The MAC AIDS Fund approached me to become one of their Viva Glam spokeswomen. I threw myself into the work because I had seen the difference that doing something small like that can make and it brought me great pleasure, so I have continued to do this work with AMFAR and with a special project with H&M.” On a final note, I asked Dita, should women add a bit of burlesque into their life? “I don’t think she should unless she wants to! It can be fun, and it’s easy to go back to being yourself afterwards if you want.” www.societylivingmagazine.com

T

he Costa del Sol has always been internationally known for its unrivalled climate and fantastic Mediterranean lifestyle but there is one other aspect that is equally as important: sport. Just to mention some recent examples, in summer Spain played Germany in a quarter-final of the tennis Davis Cup, in the Puerto Banús bullring, and earlier this year the Andalucian Tennis Experience, an event on the WTA women’s international tour with many top players from around the world, was held in Puente Romano. This month, from 29 October, the Volvo World Match Play will be held at Finca Cortesín (in Casares municipality), the first time this prestigious golf championship, which began in 1964, has been held away from its traditional venue of Wentworth in England. Sixteen of the world’s top players will be competing in the event, which takes over from the Volvo Masters – held for the 21st and last time in 2008 at Valderrama which, as many is us will recall, was the venue for the 1997 Ryder Cup. Last month I was invited to a top polo event in Sotogrande. I personally don’t attend polo on a regular basis but it’s much bigger than most

48

people think, and Sotogrande is one of the leading polo venues in the world, attracting the crème de la crème of the sport’s players and fans, including European royalty and aristocracy. On this occasion I was invited by Mario Guarnieri to join him and a group of friends in the VIP area of his sponsored stand. The atmosphere was very nice, there was excellent catering and the players are always the best-looking guys! These days there are also women playing: Isabel de Borbón, for example, who has her own team. So sport really does have an important role on the Costa del Sol, both for watching international events and for playing a whole range of sports ourselves, something which is made so much easier and more fun because of the great weather. Marbella and the rest of the Costa del Sol is probably best known for its golf courses when it comes to sport, and one of the most popular is Royal Guadalmina Golf Club. A prior engagement prevented me from attending the club’s 50th anniversary gala dinner last month but friends told me it was a superb party, with 400 members and guests – both Spanish and foreigners, as it is quite a multi-cultural club.

Guadalmina is one of the most classical residential areas in Marbella, and Royal Guadalmina one of the most traditional golf clubs. In fact, it is the second oldest on the Costa del Sol, after the Parador in Málaga, and one of the rare courses located right on the sea. I recently went to the newly renovated restaurant at the clubhouse, and the cuisine and ambience was wonderful, with the same chef who runs various other top golf club restaurants. It’s quite interesting that Guadalmina is an area you normally only discover after you’ve been living here for a while. It is home to the elite of Spanish society, as well as foreign, but very low-key and not showy at all. We have homes for sale in Guadalmina ranging from luxury to medium, so it does also have quite a varied selection of properties. Fortunately, as usual, there were many other great parties to attend. The Alliance Francophone, an association of French speakers who get together to promote French culture, had a dinner at Olivia Valere; there was Paco and Pili’s Mexican “rancho” party; Jaime and his daughter Lara, who have birthdays on the same day, invited us to a joint celebration; my friend María José had another fantastic party; and we enjoyed tenors and music with friends at Las Brisas. Singer Lennex Davis entertained us at Ofelia and David’s party. Lennex was a client of mine 20 years ago, and now he fronts his own 17-piece big band Late Night Jazz. I enjoyed a lovely dinner at La Tirana, a littleknown restaurant just behind the “El Pirulí” copper statue in Marbella. It is almost like visiting someone’s home, a very cosy setting with a garden full of plants and flowers that is perfect for al fresco dining. There was a Rotary dinner with Rotarians from Moscow. Marbella Rotary Club, of which I am president this year, is making preparations for a formal brotherhood with Moscow and we will be working closely together on a charity for young musicians, including a fund-raising concert. Readers will know I love music so this is something close to my heart. On the business side, it seems like the whole world is finally getting out of recession, which shows with the number of sales we are making: big, medium and small. Marbella received a lot of good press this summer and everyone is very

positive. We had very good weather, unlike other places. We are so lucky to be living here and people are happy. In one sense, in summer we almost share the holidays of those who visit us – which is very pleasant! I was talking to one foreign developer who used to be here years ago and who was planning to buy a property in Florida. However, after visiting Marbella this summer he said he realised it was just as good here as anywhere in the world, including Florida, and so much closer for him, so he went ahead and bought a beautiful home. Having said that, we have a new project on the Mexican Riviera, with golf and beach club, so if anyone wants an alternative for winter give us a call. Everyone is now back in the office after their August holidays, and we are at full strength again. We are already very active – even looking for new sales people – and are perfectly placed to help you with your real estate needs, buying or selling, as well as boating through KS Marine. In fact, as this issue goes to press I will be at the Monaco boat show. I’ll let you know next month how that went. Until then, have a lovely October, the first full month of autumn.

ON THE ROAD Rolls-Royce say that their Coupé is the most sporting of the Phantom line, with the stiffest bodyshell in the three-model range. Despite the space frame construction with its inherently high structural stiffness, the engineers have actually managed to increase torsional rigidity by a further 12 percent. This makes the Coupé an even more stable platform for the more driver focused chassis settings. These include a slightly quicker valve on the power steering, uprated spring and damper rates, and a slightly thicker rear anti-roll bar that sharpen up the drive with minimal effect on ride comfort. The Phantom Coupé shares the 6.75 litre V12 with its brethren. The 453bhp and 720Nm torque outputs are unchanged. Bury your right foot in the deep pile Wilton carpet and 100 km/h comes up in just 5.8 seconds, with an electronically limited 250 km/h at the top end. The Coupé is the first Phantom model to get a Sport button. This engages a second ECU map that quickens both the response of the

ccording to the Sunday Times Rich List, thousands of new millionaires are being created all over the world every year. Apparently, in India alone, 47 people become millionaires every day, with one billionaire added each month! However, the number of ultra high net worth individuals who can effortlessly afford private jets and super yachts beyond the purview of mere millionaires remains relatively small. One consequence of this boom in wealthy individuals is a significant dilution of the words exclusive and luxury. With so many people soaking up the production of BMW, Boss, Rolex and other premium brands, the super-rich seek far greater exclusivity. With sales of around 1,000 cars a year worldwide and an entry price of a quarter of a million sterling, Rolls-Royce sets the bar high. With its price tag of £296,500 (approx ¤335,000), the new Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupé is truly exclusive. Beyond this level, you enter the realm of bespoke coach building.

Today, I am driving a Phantom Coupé in its natural habitat, gliding along the roads around Marbella, where many of the rich and famous live and play. Along with many other wealthy parts of the world, Rolls-Royce has sold a significant number of Phantom limousine and Drophead Coupés here, so the prominent grille topped by the Spirit of Ecstasy is no stranger to these parts. In economically troubled times, overt displays of wealth tend to be reined in, even in wealthy enclaves. Judging from the reactions of onlookers though, the Coupé’s softer, more graceful lines are far less attention getting than either the monolithic four-door or the flamboyant Drophead Coupé. Admiration rather than awe is the prevalent reaction. With its exquisite proportions, the Phantom Coupé looks smaller than the four-door, and it is only when you see it next to a “normal” car that you realise its physical bulk is hardly diminished by the loss of two doors and a chunk of wheelbase.

ON THE ROAD e-gas throttle and the kickdown of the six-speed automatic, which will also hold on to each intermediate gear longer. With Sport mode engaged, I certainly felt the big 6.75 litre V12 respond more urgently, the Coupé’s long prow cleaving the air with newfound determination. However, old school Rolls-Royce owners would consider such gestures irrelevant, and even irreverent. For as much as the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars company of the 21st century would like its customers to think of the Coupé as a gentleman’s sporting carriage, Rolls-Royce DNA is coded first and foremost to create cars that waft their occupants along in supreme comfort. So, as impressive at defying gravity as the Coupé’s fine performance is, trying to make a battleship emulate a destroyer seems like a bridge too far. Thus, I was quite happy to leave the Sport button out of the equation the rest of the time. It is my considered opinion that, while even the big four-door Phantom is more agile than its apparent bulk would have you believe,

ON THE ROAD “A major part of the Rolls-Royce tranquility and insulation comes from the exquisitely detailed cabin”

sporty driving implies a mindset involving closer engagement with the external world. This is a marketing led dichotomy that runs counter to the Rolls-Royce DNA, which is inherently about class, breeding, style and detachment from the masses. At this level, presence and deportment are everything; sprezzatura, or the art of effortless superiority, is quintessential to its very being.

Tranquility and insulation from the hustle and bustle of a hectic world is what a RollsRoyce does best, and the Phantom Coupé is simply another take on this theme. While it can indeed be rewardingly driven with more spirit than its brethren, ultimately, the Coupé’s sportiness is more a trait to be perceived by onlookers than one to be exploited by the owner.

A major part of the Rolls-Royce tranquility and insulation comes from the exquisitely detailed cabin whose upholstery and trim is haute couture bespoke. Beyond that, the Coupé has a unique ace up its sleeve ready to surprise and delight occupants. Flip open the front compartment of the centre armrest, which also houses the electric seat controls, and you will now also find the controls for the optional “starlight” headlining illumination. Using fibre-optics technology, the “starlight” headlining has hundreds of “stars” whose brightness can be controlled by a rheostat, creating a novel effect. From distant stars to miniature suns, this unique system easily replaces conventional interior illumination when you turn it up full. Having a personal constellation at one’s beck and call is an option few will be able to resist. The commodious boot opens in two sections, an arrangement first seen on the Drophead Coupé. Opening the horizontal section allows you to place or extract smaller objects from the boot, while the vertical section hinges down flat, and is strong enough to support the weight of two adults should you wish to use it as a seat. One of the criteria for exclusivity is that an object must be unique and have little or no competition. A BMW could be replaced by an Audi or a Mercedes-Benz and, at a higher level, Aston Martin, Bentley and Ferrari compete for the same clientele. In the overall scheme of things, the RollsRoyce Phantom Coupé has no direct rivals, and is created with more craftsmen input than just about any car made by a mainstream manufacturer today. As fewer than 300 Phantom Coupés will be built each year for a world still seemingly bursting with wealthy individuals despite the recession, that makes it a truly exclusive automotive object d’ art.

Nicki Waterman TOP TRAINER TO THE STARS OFFERS USEFUL ADVICE FOR A HEALTHIER AND FITTER LIFESTYLE – AND VALUABLE TIPS TO LOSE THOSE EXTRA KILOS many meals at home as you can. Ready-made sandwiches may have been made weeks earlier (and pumped full of preservatives to keep fresh) so make your own. Don’t add ready-made sauces to pasta or stir-fry dishes; just add fresh, natural flavour with a tin of chopped tomatoes or chilli, garlic and ginger.

Portion control Although they don’t diet, French women do watch their portions. A University of Pennsylvania survey compared serving sizes in restaurants and supermarkets in Paris and Philadelphia, and discovered portion sizes in the US were 25 per cent bigger. They also found a supermarket soft drink in America was 52 per cent bigger than in France and a standard carton of yoghurt 82 per cent bigger. British portions weren’t measured but studies show we’re somewhere in between America and France. The bigger the serving the more you’re likely to eat, regardless of how hungry you are, so smaller portions definitely help with weight loss. Protein (chicken, fish and meat) should be the size of a pack of cards and never eat more carbs (i.e, pasta and rice) than fits in one or two hands.

OOOH LA LA! HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT THE FRENCH WAY

tepping out in a bikini, the French President’s wife Carla Bruni, 41, revealed a flat stomach and body to put a 21-yearold to shame. Here’s how eating like her could help you, too. You’d think Carla Bruni’s diet was little more than lettuce and willpower but the supermodel eats whatever she likes. “She likes good food, and loves beer,” says her personal trainer. “But she never over-indulges.” Carla’s “a little of what you fancy” approach to dieting is very popular in France, where the singer lives with Nicolas Sarkozy. French eating habits were summed up in the diet books French Women Don’t Get Fat, by Mireille Guiliano, and Chic And Slim: How Those French Women Eat All That Rich Food And Still Stay Slim, by Anne Barone. The books explain how French women (and Italian-born naturalised French citizens like Carla) eat whatever they like and still stay slim. Here’s how...

72

www.societylivingmagazine.com

No dieting Only 10 per cent of French women are overweight (compared with 22 per cent of British women). Full-fat foods can actually keep you slim for two main reasons. They keep you fuller longer. Foods like butter switch on “full” signals in your brain but “diet” foods, which are nearly always full of preservatives or sugar, actually make you hungrier. And full-fat foods are difficult to binge on. It’s hard to eat too much strong cheese or dark chocolate.

Food from scratch In France, 76 per cent of women eat meals prepared from scratch at home. In the UK, more of us rely on ready-meals, pre-prepared sandwiches and ready-made sauces. Meals from scratch usually contain less salt, sugar and preservatives (and are cheaper!) so prepare as

A typical French woman spends two hours over lunch, whereas British mealtimes have dropped to 15 minutes in the past few years. If you’re always scoffing food, slow down and you’ll lose weight. Try to make each meal last for at least 30 minutes and chew each mouthful well. You’ll feel fuller quicker and the more you chew food the more nutrients your body gets.

BOOZING ADDS INCHES TO YOUR WAISTLINE

DIET FOOD THAT MAKES YOU FAT... Yet more diet foods are said to be ruining all the hard work we’ve put into slimming down. They don’t taste that bad and, hey, the label says the stuff is good for us…so what’s the problem? Research shows that lots of those “skinny” foods aren’t really worth it, constantly tempting us to eat more and actually (shock horror!) put on more weight. The research conducted on young rats has proven that those conditioned with artificial sweeteners from birth tended to over-eat when they were fed “diet” foods. They are fooled by the taste and tricked by the conditioning into believing that they are always eating low-calorie food. So, to avoid the heartache of seeing all your hard work go to waste, for a really slim (lasting) body we’ve compiled a list of the diet foods we should perhaps start avoiding.

Low-fat fizzy drinks It’s not new research that the artificial sweeteners used in the low-calorie drinks we all opt for in an attempt to look our best are actually fattening. We thought we couldn’t be tricked by the food we eat,

but artificial sweeteners con us into thinking our calorie intake is greater than it is. When our bodies find out we’ve lied to them, the tide turns, our bodies retaliate and we tend to eat more.

Low-fat cereal bars The tempting low-fat cereal bars, the easy grab as we rush out in the morning… “Only 90 calories!” screams the wrapper. “Brilliant” we think! Think again. Like fizzy low-calorie drinks, these simple diet bars make us think we’re being good to ourselves, whereas in reality the high rush of sugar and artificial sweeteners sends us in to a lull after the initial buzz and leaves us feeling hungrier than we were when we first tore open the little packet. As a solution, why not try snacking on a packet of nuts, or just a good helping of high-energy fruit, such as bananas, to get you going in the morning.

Diet yogurts Try opting for natural yogurt, free of the dreaded artificial sweeteners, starch and gelatine found in plenty of the reduced fat options. Those yogurts with added fruit are an even better bonus on the taste front.

The staple healthy salads Even opting for a healthy salad when everyone else is stuffing their faces with rich foods may not be the best option. Tasty dressings, potato salads, coleslaw and croutons are all a bit of a no-no if you want to cut down on those calories. Try sticking to salads full of protein or good fatty oils found in foods such as tuna, salmon and avocado.

Reduced-fat snacks Muffins, biscuits, crisps and chocolate: everyone’s guilty pleasure in the afternoon. No matter how much we try to avoid them, they’re just too tempting, but even opting for the low-fat option only has a few calories less than the real thing. Low-fat muffins are jam-packed with butter, sugar and fat, still a whopping 300-400 calories. It’s just a shame they taste so good.

For any ladies despairing over those stubborn scales, we have some information that might be of interest to you. New studies have revealed that binge drinking can add a whopping 10 CENTIMETRES (four inches) to your waistline and if that doesn’t leave you weeping into your bottle of Pinot we don’t know what will! We know it’s not fair, but that amounts to double what equally binge-happy men gain in comparison, because us ladies are generally smaller and there s less of our bodies available to absorb booze. (The price we pay for our feminine figures is that we have less fluid in our body to dilute the alcohol, causing a build up of fat. So, when we re out on a Saturday night, all that tipple we just can’t physically absorb gets turned into abdominal fat the stuff that clings to the waist and hip area. The average large glass of wine clocks in at a shocking 200 calories. At seven calories per gram, alcohol is stuffed with more calories than many foods. So what are the guidelines for those of you working hard to banish the pounds? Well, binge drinking in the UK is defined as five drinks or more consumed on one occasion with a drink, or unit, being a small glass of wine, half a pint of beer or a pub measure of spirits. Anything over that is not doing you any favours. The snapshot study at University College London monitored alcohol effects on 30,000 people. Results showed that men developed waists that were on average six centimetres (two inches) bigger than people who did not binge drink. Women gained almost twice as much, around 10 centimetres (four inches) compared with non-binge drinkers. Hands up who’s going to be thinking twice before they break open the bubbly?

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Question: I’ve started going to the gym in an attempt to lose some weight, but it’s making me so hungry I eat twice as much as normal. Why is this? Nicki says: Studies show that women in particular get the munchies after working out. I suggest you dedicate an hour and a half a day to walking instead, as scientists have discovered this burns up to 600 calories without increasing your appetite. But make sure you stride out powerfully to burn those calories.I’d love to hear from you, so email your questions, tips and diet success stories to me at: www.nickiwaterman.com

THE PERFECT SMILE THE GOLDEN ERA I just experienced my first ever professional Spray Tan. After exfoliating with Fake Bake Passion Fruit Body Polish, I popped down to Reflections where Bea, the beauty manager, took me through the procedure. After donning a glamorous paper thong, I had to strike some hilarious positions while being sprayed, including standing like a duck while poking my bum out. That night I went a colour that no human should ever go. The next morning after washing off the residue I moisturised with Fake Bake’s Moisturiser (very important as fake tan dries the skin). However, I think if you have a relatively healthy lifestyle, this will show on the outside.” Ever ambitious, what is next for Tara? “I want to be known as the person to go to on the more greener-conscious side of hair dressing, to create a global hair brand and to be known as a figurehead in the world of fashion and hair. But I will still always do people’s hair – it is what I love.” www.tarasmith.com

FINE DINING TAI PAN

Chinese dining with a cosmopolitan touch WORDS SAM JONES PHOTOS DAVID TOMS

s part of this issue’s tour around a selection of the Coast’s finest Asian restaurants, we had the pleasure of visiting Marbella’s Tai Pan Chinese restaurant, which is located at the emblematic Hotel Puente Romano and has maintained its reputation as one of the Coast’s most reputable Chinese restaurants for over 25 years. The restaurant offers a special and refined dining experience and, whether you’re a firsttimer or have visited the popular dining spot before, you’re bound to agree that Tai Pan

stands itself apart from many other Chinese restaurants in terms of originality, menu, setting and service. On arriving at Tai Pan, guests are greeted in a friendly yet professional manner by owner Lincoln and his team. Diners can enjoy a predinner drink at the fabulous cocktail bar –overlooking the pleasant outdoor terrace and tranquil pool and garden area – before moving into the stylish and minimal main restaurant, which is immediately striking with a dramatic yet flowing blend of black and red décor, dark woods and soft lighting. The chic setting is perfect for special occasions or dining in numbers, yet just right for a romantic meal or mid-week dinner. The exquisite Chinese and Cantonese cuisine adds to the overall cosmopolitan dining experience offered by Tai Pan. The menu is well thought-out and expertly prepared by a team of chefs who create each dish with a light and delicate touch characteristic of authentic food from the orient. The menu includes a selection of classic as well as more contemporary dishes, all of which use the freshest ingredients and are beautifully presented. Starters, for example, include the traditional mixed hors d’oeuvre; various assortments of spring rolls; chicken or beef satay; and the popular “Ribs Tai Pan”. For something slightly more exotic, other starters include soft shell crab with salt and pepper; steamed scallop with ginger and spring onion; chicken with banana; or special Vietnam-style “nems”, or rolls, as a shared starter. The Peking and crispy aromatic duck come highly recommended at Tai Pan, or guests can opt for the delicious barbecued Cantonese duck for something more unusual. Other popular choices at Tai Pan include sizzling chicken; chicken Kapraw with green

beans, basil and Thai chilli; succulent sliced beef with black beans and green pepper; or the mouth-watering lamb with spring onions and ginger. Creative fish and seafood dishes particularly stand out at Tai Pan, and must be tried in order to sample something from each section of the delectable menu. Choose from the steamed sea bass with ginger, spring onions and soya sauce; pan-fried turbot with soya sauce and spring onions; fresh fish fillets with Chinese mushrooms, ginger and oyster sauce; or juicy pan-fried prawns with black bean and green pepper, with asparagus or Szechuan-style. Lobster is another popular choice at Tai Pan and is hand-picked for quality then prepared

with a choice of classic black bean, ginger and spring onion, or the special Tai Pan sauce, which is simply melt-in-the-mouth and perfect for sharing or for an extra special occasion. A good choice of rice and noodle dishes – such as fried rice with diced prawns steamed in a lotus leaf, “Monk’s” vegetarian rice and Singapore fried noodles – is available, as is an excellent list of wines, cava, champagne, long drinks, cocktails and sake. Reservations are recommended for special occasions and during busy periods or weekends but, whatever the time or occasion, the Tai Pan team offer an excellent level of service and will do their upmost to ensure a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable evening.

M

oving along Marbella’s Golden Mile, we were invited to sample another of the Coast’s landmark Oriental restaurants in this issue’s special section featuring fine Asian cuisine. Sukhothai – sister restaurant to the popular Tai Pan Chinese restaurant (reviewed on P.80) and the stylish Thai Gallery near Puerto Banús – is without doubt one of the chicest and most fashionable venues to dine out at in the area. The strong dark wood interior is fused with softer Thai elements such as orchids, bamboo, subtle lime green and lilac fabrics, and an assortment of ornate Thai buddhas adding an exotic and harmonious touch to the ambience; while contemporary lighting, eclectic detailing and an eye-catching use of mirrors add a distinctively cosmopolitan element to the overall design. Table settings are elegant and minimal and can accommodate seatings of various sizes from the intimate two-person settings which are notably urban in style to the larger round table at the quieter end of the restaurant, fitted with a rotating “lazy susan” and perfect for parties or entertaining. Sukhothai is as equally highly regarded as its sister restaurants in terms of excellent service, impeccable standards and, of course, its fabulous cuisine, all of which offer a fine dining experience you could expect to find in glamorous destinations such as Bangkok or New York. Named after the ancient kingdom of Sukhothai – which holds a strong influence

over the country’s present-day culture, architecture, art and cuisine – the restaurant reflects both traditional and modern Thailand in its sophisticated setting and exquisite royal Thai cuisine. According to the team at Sukhothai, an authentic Thai meal should be an “ensemble of distinctive flavours” using “the freshness of lemongrass, mint and lime leaf, the aromatic freshness imparted by spices, and the fierce bite of chilli and peppers”. Coupled with creative and quite beautiful presentation, dishes served at Sukhothai are a true treat for the senses. The menu presents a colourful combination of creative salads and starters, fragrant soups, mouth-watering curries, drier dishes, fresh seafood, delicious meat and vegetable dishes. If you feel a little spoilt for choice by the generous list of dishes, look no further than the enticing list of chef’s recommendations; while for those who are a little wary of sometimes overly spicy Thai food, the menu includes a helpful guide as to the spiciness of individual dishes. An impressive wine list is available, as is a choice of cava, champagne, aperitifs, whisky or brandy and Thai beer. The attractive bar area is a pleasant place to enjoy a pre-dinner drink should you have to wait for a table although, due to the restaurant’s popularity, booking is advisable. Recommendations from the menu might include the traditional Thai fish cakes or a juicy

prawn, chicken or beef satay with spiced peanut sauce and pickled cucumber to begin with. Popular starters to share are the season seafood basket or mixed starter selection platter; while the delightful salads include fresh and tasty variations such as minced lamb, pork or chicken with mixed Thai herbs and lemon juice, or the succulent beef salad flavoured with mint and coriander and tossed in lime and chilli dressing. For true lovers of Thai cuisine, Sukhothai’s soups are a must and include the classic chicken and coconut soup flavoured with lemongrass and lime leaves; as well as one of Thailand’s favourite soups – Tom Yam Koong, a clear and fragrant broth served with spicy prawns. The excellent curry dishes do not disappoint, with a choice of red hot curry prawns with pineapple, basil and coconut milk; steamed exotic seafood with red curry sauce served on a fresh banana leaf; barbecued duck served in spicy coconut milk with lychee and basil leaves; and a classic Massaman beef fillet with spicy peanut sauce. Fresh fish is a speciality at Sukhothai and is served in creative combinations such as Thai-Style sweet and sour “Imperial Fish”; fried whole fish in garlic and pepper; or a delicate fillet of hake with Thai chilli sauce. Rounding off the list of mains, grilled and stirfried dishes are other popular choices from the kitchen and include “Tiger Cry” grilled beef with spicy Thai sauce or stir-fried chicken or prawns with basil, chilli and garlic.

DA BRUNO Another excellent season for top restaurant chain The popular Da Bruno group of restaurants celebrated the culmination of yet another successful summer, the highlight of which came when a yacht sponsored by Da Bruno made a positive start to the new sailing season, finishing second in the 10th Sotogrande Cup. Captained by Pepequín de Orbaneja, the yacht will now take part in the 10 legs of the Costa del Sol Grand Prix, in the Platu 25 category. There are also plans to sail in the Andalucian and Spanish championships, and next year’s world championship in Alicante. More information: www.dabruno.com

Lighting that you can trust SOME DESIGNERS BELIEVE ALL LEDS ARE CREATED EQUALLY, SO IT MAY COME AS A SURPRISE TO LEARN THAT THERE ARE ONLY A HANDFUL OF HIGH-QUALITY LED MANUFACTURERS. KSR ARE ONE SUCH COMPANY.

W

ith the swift increase in demand for LEDs, the number of manufacturers and assembly designers serving the worldwide market has, likewise, increased rapidly. Unfortunately, this proliferation of suppliers has flooded the market with low-quality LEDs. A good quality lighting manufacturer such as KSR will always be more expensive but the quality of the light and fixture will be far superior. With KSR you will not get any nasty surprises such as premature fading after only 1,000 hours of use, especially when you were expecting the LED to last up to 50,000 hours. This happens because low-quality

96

www.societylivingmagazine.com

LEDs in poorly designed assemblies can begin to dim and fade. In fact, a low-quality LED may initially appear brighter than a high-quality one if the device has a higher drive current. However, the extra current causes the LED to heat up more quickly, and ultimately fade or burn out. Other common complaints are the cold colour. Matt Callander, director of KSR, explains, “This only happens when you buy a cool white; if you chose a warm white you will create that pleasant ambience you are looking for.” KSR offer customers consistent operating characteristics, while lower-quality manufacturers offer a “mixed bag” of LEDs. Matt adds, “Of course, tungsten gives the

best light, but we need to realise that we have to convert to low energy; it will help to save the world.”

HE SPEAKS EXCLUSIVELY TO SOCIETY LIVING ABOUT HIS CAREER, AND YEAR, SO FAR – AND HIS GOALS FOR THE FUTURE

H

ow and why did you start playing golf, and what has been the biggest influence on your career?

My dad introduced me to golf. I loved playing all sports from an early age but started to focus on golf as I got older. Dad is still really involved in the amateur game in England. My coach, Peter Kostis, has been a big influence on me in recent years. ■ Your favourite course in the world and why? Cypress Point – if you see a picture of the 16th and 17th you’ll understand why. ■ How do you feel you are playing right now – at least before you had to pull out of the BMW Championship (on the US PGA Tour)? Of course, after three wins I was really happy with the way I was playing before I hurt myself. It is very frustrating to have to take time out injured when you have been playing and

98

www.societylivingmagazine.com

performing great and especially at such a crucial time in the season. Still, you can look at it either way: it would obviously be a lot worse if I had a terrible season and then had to sit out for a couple of months without the opportunity to get out there and turn it around. I just want to make sure I don’t rush coming back – intercostal muscles take quite a bit of time to heal and you can easily set yourself right back to square one if you aren’t careful. ■ When did you realise you had made it? That’s a tricky question. I think while you are always aiming for new goals or to improve yourself you never sit back and think, “Well done me, I‘ve made it.” Until I achieve all that I believe I am capable of, and that includes some majors wins, I don’t think I will ever consider that I have totally made it. I am obviously proud of what I have achieved so far, including my tournament wins, Ryder Cup achievements and reaching world number three – they are all great, but I still believe I can achieve so much more.

■ Can you describe your typical training routine… Both at tournaments and when I am at home I go to the gym regularly. I like the discipline of it and I think it helps my confidence to know I am physically fit as well as having a positive impact on my concentration, as I don’t get so tired. It is also important to prevent injuries. I do a mixture of cardiovascular and weight training, all specially devised programmes designed with my golf in mind. ■ The highlight of your golfing career, and why? It is impossible to say – golf has given me so many amazing moments. Being part of two winning Ryder Cup sides and winning my first ever pro event at Gleneagles was an exciting landmark for me in 2001. The 2006 World Match Play Championship was a momentous win for me too – the list of past winners and the fact I had grown up watching the tournament at Wentworth made that a very special win. This year it is really hard to pick my favourite moment. I was thrilled to win the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship again – I hadn’t won a tournament since I won there in 2007 so it felt great to start the year with a win. I went on from there to win the Shell Houston Open. This was my first professional win on the US PGA Tour so that was a pretty significant win, and then winning the European Tour’s flagship tournament, the BMW Championship at Wentworth, in front of my family and friends was amazing too! ■ What do you feel are the strongest and weakest parts of your game? I always try to turn my weaknesses into my strengths. I have always been a very good driver and long iron player and perhaps my short game has been a little weak. However,

TOURNAMENT FACT FILE WIN FREE TICKETS Society Living is offering 10 free Volvo World Match Play tickets for readers: five winners, two daily tickets each. In what Costa del Sol municipality is Finca Cortesín located?

part of the reason I’ve won three times this year has been because I’ve become sharper with the short game and more consistent with my overall game. Stats can lie a little but I look at them and use them as a guide as to what I should work on. ■ Talk me through you first US PGA Tour win this year and how it felt… Obviously it was great to win the Shell Houston Open. I came frustratingly close at the WGC-Accenture but felt that it was right round the corner so was thrilled to get my first PGA Tour win under my belt. I was thrilled to come through the drama of a play-off to claim my first win. ■ What do you feel has led to your success this year? Getting married in December last year! ■ What is the secret to successfully juggling playing schedules on the US and European Tours? It does take planning to make sure you don’t exhaust yourself with too many long-haul flights but with my coach, Peter Kostis, and my management team at IMG we pretty much

work out my schedule 12 months in advance. It is a lot of travel but don’t worry, I think I am pretty lucky – I get to play golf all over the world and get paid for it. It is pretty amazing really. I love to visit new places and actually my 11 tournament wins have taken place on five continents. I’ve won in USA, Europe, Middle East, China and Australia, so I guess that means I am pretty comfortable travelling. ■ What is the aspect of your game that you work on the most? It depends on any given day but, though I work on all aspects, I probably spend a little more time on my short game. ■ Is there a particular golfer from a past era you would like to have played with, and why? Although I would love to have played with Nicklaus, Player and Palmer in their prime, I think we are pretty fortunate to be in the era we are in. Tiger Woods has lifted the profile of golf to a whole new level of interest amongst sports fans, which has obviously benefited all of us, and as a professional golfer you want to compete and win against the world’s best players.

■ The ¤3.25 million Volvo World Match Play (29 October-1 November) will bring together 16 of the world’s leading stars in a novel new round-robin format: four groups of four players representing all the continents and main tours, with the winners progressing to the semi-finals, and ultimately the 36-hole final on the Sunday. ■ As the defending champion (the event was not held last year), South African Els was the first qualifier for the 2009 championship, while Australian Scott Strange joined him when he won the Volvo China Open earlier in the year. ■ The next group of players qualified in August from their official world ranking position after the US PGA Championship, covering each of the six main regions: Paul Casey (Europe – the 2006 winner); Retief Goosen (Africa/Middle East); Tiger Woods (North America); Camilo Villegas (South America); Yang Yong-Eun (Asia); and Geoff Ogilvy (Australasia). (Note: not all players qualifying will be at Finca Cortesín; Woods and Ogilvy, for example, have declined their invitations.) ■ Another four players (not already qualified) earned a place from the world rankings as of 28 September (as Society Living was going to press). ■ And the final four will qualify from their positions on the European Tour Race to Dubai order of merit as of 5 October. ■ Since Arnold Palmer’s inaugural win in 1964, players from 10 different countries have won the title, with the champions’ rollcall including the finest players of their era: from Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus to Greg Norman, Seve Ballesteros, Ian Woosnam, Sandy Lyle, Nick Faldo, Vijay Singh and Ernie Els – the most successful participant. ■ Until this year (and 2008, when it was postponed), the event has always been held at Wentworth, UK headquarters of the European Tour. ON THE FAIRWAY ■ As for the Volvo World Match Play, have you played the Finca Cortesín course, and if not what are your expectations? I haven’t played the course but I have heard a lot about it. I have heard that it is going to be a fantastic stage for match play golf and has some breathtaking holes. ■ What are you looking forward to at the Volvo World Match Play and what preparations are you making? I am trying to make sure I am as fit and ready as possible for the Match Play and that my injury is fully recovered. I love match play – we play so many stroke play tournaments throughout the year that I really look forward to the freedom that match play brings. It helps that I have enjoyed some success. Winning the World Match Play in 2006 was an amazing moment for me but earlier this year I finished second in the WGC-Accenture Match Play so it gave me confidence ahead of the 2009 World Match Play. I am also looking forward to the new champions’ league format – it has always been a knock-out so the round robin groups will make an interesting change. The hotel looks amazing in the brochure and everyone I speak to says it is incredibly luxurious; I can’t wait to check in. ■ What are your goals? I like to keep my goals private but you can be sure majors feature there somewhere. ■ Nutrition… do you have a particular diet you follow? I am very conscious of eating healthily and making sure I have the right fuel on board to perform my best. Hydration is a very important part of this too. ■ Where else in Andalucía do you like playing? I am really looking forward to trying out Finca Cortesín – I have heard some amazing reviews. I don’t have any one particular favourite though I have enjoyed playing at several courses in the region, including the famous Valderrama. ■ Your favourite playing partner? I can’t pick one out – anyone on the European Ryder Cup team! ■ What is it you like most about Spain? I like the people, everyone is always so friendly, and the amazing restaurants – one of my dreams is to eat at El Bulli in Cataluña. And of course the weather. ■ What is your schedule for the rest of the year after the World Match Play? Will you be taking a break over Christmas-New Year? I will play in the WGC-HSBC Champions and the Dubai World Championship for sure. I will take a bit of a break over Christmas but I will also put in a lot of hard work on the range and in the gym so I am ready to start the year in top form – hopefully by defending the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship.

SURGERY NOTES TOP NEW HOSPITAL POSITION FOR MARBELLA-BASED SPECIALIST Grupo Hospitalario Quiron, Spain’s most successful private health care provider, has launched a new hospital in Málaga – and recruited Dr. Alexander Aslani, director of the Cirumed Clinic in Marbella, as head of the department of plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgery. The group currently runs high-profile hospitals in Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia and enjoys an excellent reputation in the Spanish health care system. The Hospital Quiron Málaga is equipped with the latest in medical technology, hosting virtually every medical speciality. Together with Dr. Aslani’s highly qualified team the department will be setting out to establish a new quality of care within the speciality. As the only department of its kind outside the strictly public health care sector, the spectrum goes far beyond purely cosmetic surgery. According to the medical director of Hospital Quiron Málaga, Dr. Angel Gíro Camacho, “We want to offer our patients access to reconstructive surgery at the highest level. We are very excited and happy to have recruited Dr. Alexander Aslani. He does not only offer outstanding experience in the field of cosmetic surgery but is also a highly experienced reconstructive surgeon as well.” Reconstructive microsurgery, extending from breast to head and neck, and lower limb and hand reconstruction will be one of the special features on offer within the hospital’s plastic surgery department. As director of Cirumed Clinic, Dr Aslani has performed about 500 aesthetic procedures annually in recent years. But when casting for a qualified plastic surgeon

to fill the position Dr. Giro Camacho had more than “just” cosmetic surgery in mind. “For us it was important to recruit a surgeon with international experience and a solid background as a reconstructive surgeon for this position.” Before moving to Spain, Dr. Aslani held important positions as a consultant in academic departments of plastic and reconstructive surgery in Europe and South Africa. He is also in private practice in the UK, mainly in the field of aesthetic surgery. In building up the new department, Dr. Aslani receives high-level support from Dr. Manuel Ortiz Abello, a highly experienced reconstructive head and neck surgeon, and former chief of head and neck surgery in Rosario, Argentina, who will be the first consultant and principal specialist in the department. “I am very happy to have Dr. Ortiz as a consultant,” says Dr. Aslani. ”It is not easy to find a surgeon matching Manuel’s experience in cancer as well as post-traumatic reconstruction of the head and neck.” Hand surgery is also in the spectrum of Hospital Quiron’s new plastic surgery unit, extending from elective hand surgery to microsurgical re-implantation of amputated extremities. In addition, the department will undertake corrective surgery of “unfavourable results” of cosmetic surgery elsewhere, especially secondary rhinoplasty. As she recalls, “They had been in the shelter for over 10 months after their owner unfortunately couldn’t afford to keep them anymore; the boys had been there so long they had given up hope. I asked the shelter if I could create a calendar for them to hopefully raise some money and promote their charity. Emma – a very good friend, top model and, most importantly, animal lover – offered to model for the project. We have so far only shot three out of the 12 needed, so if you would like to get involved in this project (hair and make-up, assistants, model, dog walkers) or even become a sponsor, then please contact me at info@cjhadlow.com. NEW DRIVING REGULATIONS IN SPAIN Motorists in Spain are now subject to new general driving regulations recently approved by the government. According to Linea Directa, one of the most significant measures is the introduction of a new licence, the A-2, valid only for riding motorbikes not exceeding 500 cubic centimetres, the aim being to help bridge the gap between riding low and high cylinder motorbikes. From now on, in order to qualify for a type A licence required for riding motorcycles of any power, the motorcyclist must have held the new A-2 licence for at least two years. In addition, in order to ride motorbikes exceeding 500 cubic centimetres cylinder capacity, the Spanish authorities have increased the minimum age to 20, in an effort to help motorists gain experience prior to dealing with more powerful machines. The new legislation also includes several other changes among them: raising the minimum age for riding mopeds from 14 to 15 years, and making it illegal for holders of this AM licence to carry passengers below the age of 18; and a change in the period of validity of licences – licences AM, A1, A2, A, B and those which have to be renewed every 10 years until the age of 65 will now have to be renewed every five years. One of life’s delightful coincidences…

Hollywood-style glamour in Sotogrande

It could hardly have been timed better. Barry Daniels, founder and chairman of the Rhys Daniels Trust, was on the Coast this summer visiting friends and, while bringing them up to date about the charity’s recent activities, was snapped with a butterfly on his forehead – together with his children Bliss and Hope (left). One of these main activities, of course, was the annual Butterfly Ball in Marbella! More information about the trust, which raises funds to provide dedicated “home from home” accommodation close to regional hospitals around the UK for families to use free of charge while their children are receiving care or treatment, at: www.rhysdanielstrust.org.

Galliano’s latest designs for the Dior autumn-winter collection were modelled during a glamorous fashion show and cocktail party at a private villa in Sotogrande. Among the 400 guests were prominent Spanish personalities from the worlds of fashion and culture, including Iñes Sastre, Ana Rosa Quintana, María León, Beatriz Hohenlohe and Beatriz de Orleans. This magical, elegant and creative evening was organised by Martina Videla of MAV Marketing Entertainment.

Fun-filled birthday celebrations Caroline Pinna celebrated her 50th birthday with her closest friends (some of whom had travelled from the UK, France and Belgium to be with her) and former work colleagues in a magnificent setting with sumptuous food and entertainment by an electric violinist and guitarist. Caroline (far right) is pictured with Don Black, Estrella Medina, Steve White and Sian Gordon; and Quike the violinist. 110
