48 THE BEST DISTRIBUTION IN TOWN
O
ur first priority in producing Society Living every month is, like any quality publication, to provide the editorial content that has made the magazine the definitive society and lifestyle guide on the Coast. Just as important, however, is our second priority: making sure the distribution is effective, efficient and reviewed on an ongoing basis – which is every day when the latest issue has just been released or when mid-month replenishments are required. To that end, the distribution is meticulously controlled by a specialist inhouse team, and there is close and regular liaison with the outlets to ensure copies are not left languishing in slowly-diminishing piles or semi-abandoned in doorways. Society Living is, effectively, “handdelivered”, which is convenient for readers and of maximum benefit for advertisers. This past month, for example, we learned to our delight that the distribution – fine-tuned to take into account Easter – had resulted in increased business for advertisers from tourists and visitors, a clear sign our efforts in this
respect were well-directed. We have also noticed in recent months that the magazine is being picked up faster than ever, perhaps a result of other publications falling foul of the financial crisis and not being able to survive winter. The success of Society Living – and its three-monthly Beautiful Home sister, which was combined in a bumper issue in April and will return in July – has also enabled us to continue upgrading the content, with the popular regular sections complemented by new faces, places, trends and news. This month, for example, we welcome Tracy Anderson to the contributors’ team, revealing the secrets behind her revolutionary fitness methods for celebrity clients; while poker supremo ‘‘Marbella Slim’’ offers valuable tips on how to get into the action – whether you are a beginner or a more experienced hand at the game. We hope you enjoy this latest issue, which has a bright and fun spring theme while also offering a glamour-tinged preview of summer, something we are all longing for after the unprecedented rainy season – and volcano ash!

Rock ‘n’ roll wine collection Fashion designer Christian Audigier has created a fabulous champagne and wine collection with striking bottle designs that are inspired by his rock ‘n’ roll street style and Hollywood glam. The wines are produced in the vineyards of the Montpeyroux Estates using grapes grown by the Roquefeuil family, who have produced wine since the 16th century. The range offers an intense Cabernet Sauvignon, a rich Chardonnay, a velvety smooth Merlot, a spicy Syrah from Vins de Pays d’Oc and a fresh, fruity AC Coteaux du Languedoc rosé. Shown here is the champagne, the Syrah in the black bottle, which is recommended for dishes rich in sauce, as well as Mediterranean cuisine; the Chardonnay in the green bottle, recommended with fish, quiches or white meat; and the rosé in the multi-coloured bottle – great for pasta, barbecues or even spicy Chinese. christianaudigierwines.com 12

GLAMOUR DIGEST
Vibrant jewellery inspired by life Stephen Webster is known for his amazing collections and intricate, elaborate designs so we wanted to look behind the scenes – to see what gives Stephen his inspiration and gain an insight into the design process. It has always been Stephen’s passion to cultivate jewellery collections that push all creative boundaries and he says his love of music has really influenced his style – and all his work is a reflection of his personality. “I am fortunate that, selfishly, I have pursued topics and inspirations from my life’s experiences and translated them into our many collections. Within all of them there is vibrancy.” Historically Stephen has always worked in 18carat gold but he notes that nowadays this has changed and he has recently used titanium and palladium for very complex pieces. For the past 20 years Stephen has developed techniques and stone cuts for gems that did not exist before, which he says “can take a lot of patience and perseverance but when it works you have something others do not, and that is what being a designer is all about. “Jewellery has to do a lot of soul searching over the next few years…There is always a place for jewellery. Apart from giving life itself, it could be the most important, significant and emotional thing to give and receive. For this reason the future looks bright and, thankfully, the more creative, the more beautifully crafted and the more provocative the piece, the brighter it looks all round.” stephenwebster.com Puerto Banús Tel. 952 816 976

Quick clips I Director Phillip Noyce said he was a nervous wreck while filming action thriller Salt, due for release later this year, with Angelina Jolie as she insisted on doing all her own stunts. The film was originally going to star Tom Cruise but when he pulled out due to scheduling conflicts the script was rewritten for Jolie, who will star as CIA agent Evelyn Salt. I The new Jack Ryan adventure now has a title – Moscow. The fifth film in the series sees actor Chris Pine take over the role of CIA analyst Jack Ryan, following in the footsteps of Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck, who have all played the character. I Pine is also said to have signed up for the sequel of Star Trek, once again playing Captain James T. Kirk – many of the original cast are also said to be starring in the second film. I Meanwhile, there may be trouble behind the scenes of the new Bond film. Oscar-nominated
Movie of the Month Sex and the City 2 – 28 May Our favourite four fashionable ladies are back once again with drama, romance and some killer outfits. SARAH JESSICA PARKER, KIM CATTRALL, KRISTIN DAVIS AND CYNTHIA NIXON return to the big screen for the muchanticipated sequel to the 2008 blockbuster. We join Carrie (SJP) and her friends in New York two years after the end of the first movie: Carrie is surprisingly still happily married to Big (CHRIS NOTH); CHARLOTTE (DAVIS) and husband Harry (EVAN HANDLER) have their hands full with her two young children Lily and Rose; MIRANDA (NIXON) is juggling work, marriage and motherhood; and SAMANTHA (CATTRALL) is unsurprisingly single and loving it. Other big names such as LIZA MINNELLI, MILEY CYRUS and HEIDI KLUM make appearances in the film as themselves; while PENELOPE CRUZ appears as Lydia, a sultry temptress who catches Big’s eye, prompting Carrie to question her two-year marriage and admit to Samantha that she and Big are a little too “Mr and Mrs Married”. screenwriter Peter Morgan has apparently quit the film following the appointment of Sam Mendes as director. MGM, however, have quashed claims of Morgan leaving, insisting they are just speculation. Pierce Brosnan, who starred in four 007 movies, recently said he was never happy with his performance and felt he had not actually “nailed” the part. I The writers of the Sherlock Holmes sequel have announced it will be a “fun movie” and have hinted that Brad Pitt will step into the role as Holmes’ nemesis Professor Moriarty. Pitt also has a film due for release at the end of this year, The Tree of Life (co-starring Sean Penn), and has reportedly signed to appear in The Lost City of Z as British explorer Colonel Percy Fawcett, who disappeared while trying to find the lost city in May 1925. I Chace Crawford, star of the highly successful Gossip Girl, is reported to have quit the remake of Footloose – giving no reason for his departure. He is not the first star to leave: Zac Efron was originally signed but pulled out last
Deciding they need a bit of glamour, Samantha takes them on a week-long, all expenses paid decadent trip to Abu Dhabi where they meet several faces – old and new. Fans of the TV show will be pleased to see a familiar face from series four, Carrie’s former fiancé AIDEN SHAW (JOHN CORBETT), who by chance bumps into the leading lady at a street market, leaving Carrie re-evaluating her life and telling Charlotte, “We bump into each other half way round the world – I think it means something.” Fans have been waiting for this movie since the first smash hit and will certainly not be disappointed with what they see. The original cast is almost complete with DAVID EIGENBERG playing STEVE BRADY once more, JASON LEWIS as JERRY “SMITH” JERROD, WILLIE GARSON returning as STANFORD BLATCH and MARIO CANTONE as ANTHONY MARENTINO. MICHAEL PATRICK King is again writing and directing and the legendary Patricia Fields is taking charge of the costumes and wardrobe. year. Director Kenny Ortega was supposed to direct the film but had to pull out because of scheduling conflicts with the Michael Jackson documentary This Is It, but the film is still going ahead – and planned for release in 2011. I Fans of our Movie of the Month will be pleased to hear that Kim Cattrall has hinted there may be a third Sex and the City film. I Most people at one point or another will have watched the hilarious American Pie and perhaps one of its sequels… now a fourth film is being written by Hurwitz and Schlossberg – of Harold and Kumar fame. The film is expected to reunite the cast of the original films though no deals have been made yet. I Nicolas Cage, Diane Kruger and Justin Bartha are coming together once more to star in the third National Treasure film – in the first two, the trio are searching for lost treasure before Cage’s arch rivals find it. Director John Turtletub has not confirmed the idea behind the movie yet but the release date is set for 2011. w w w. s o c i e t y l i v i n g m a g a z i n e . c o m

Music notes JESSICA WHITE BRINGS US UP TO DATE WITH LATEST CD RELEASES, CONCERTS AND ROCK SNIPPETS FROM AROUND THE WORLD
I
nternational jewellery brand STEPHEN WEBSTER are hosting an exclusive party in Marbella this summer with special guest BRIAN FERRY, who will be playing, along with his band, classics such as Slave to Love. The brand and STEPHEN WEBSTER himself are known for their rock ‘n’ roll vibe so BRIAN will fit in very well at the party. Fans enjoyed the American version of Glastonbury last month at Coachella with some great headliners including JAY-Z, MUSE and GORILLAZ. BEYONCE, who performed on stage with husband JAY-Z, caused some controversy with an X-rated T-shirt, while KATY PERRY wore a very revealing outfit that left little to the imagination. MS PERRY has an album out at the end of the year, probably some time before her upcoming marriage to lothario RUSSELL BRAND in India – a secret RIHANNA, her bridesmaid, let slip last month. Legendary rocker OZZY OSBOURNE is also said to be releasing a new album entitled Scream – his 10th album to date. It is produced by OZZY and KEVIN CHURKO, who worked on the 2007 worldwide hit Black Rain. OZZY will also embark on an 18-month world tour in support of Scream later this year. Following on the heels of some American bands who have
24
released albums exclusively with major chains such as Walmart and Target, dance band FAITHLESS are releasing their next album exclusively with iTunes and Tesco. New album The Dance is released on 17 May, while the band has confirmed they are playing at Glastonbury, V, T in the Park and Global Gathering. X Factor finalist DIANA VICKERS has announced a string of live dates including opening for fellow finalists JLS – the singer has included Cardiff to her tour to take it to 10 dates up and down the country. The pop star releases her debut album Songs from the Tainted Cherry Tree on 3 May and will also be taking part in the Get It Loud in Libraries campaign. LEE RYAN, currently working on his solo album Confessions and releasing his first movie, The Heavy with VINNIE JONES, is reuniting with fellow band mates SIMON WEBBE, DUNCAN JAMES and ANTHONY COSTA to release more songs. BLUE disbanded in 2004 after ELTON JOHN suggested their popularity as a group was waning, and all the members went on to have solo careers – DUNCAN JAMES released a few singles and has recently starred in the West End Musical Chicago; SIMON WEBBE released two albums with success; and ANTHONY COSTA released

songs, starred in Blood Brothers and was a contestant on I’m A Celebrity: Get Me Out Of Here. UK pop star ELLIE GOULDING has revealed she never planned to be famous and isn’t particularly very rock ‘n’ roll. She recently said that sitting next to JAY-Z and GIRLS ALOUD at the Brits was very bizarre and didn’t happen to girls like her. It’s nice to see some musicians really are down to earth.
ELLIE’S debut album peaked at number one on the UK Albums Chart in March and her third single entitled Guns and Horses is released on 7 May. MARK OWEN has been reunited with his family after he checked himself into The Priory to be treated for alcoholism, and confessed he had had 10 affairs since getting together with his wife Emma Ferguson. The TAKE THAT star is not the first member to confess to secrets about their personal life: HOWARD DONALD revealed he had taken drugs in the past and sparked controversy when he expressed the view that cannabis should be legalised; and former member ROBBIE WILLIAMS has reportedly suffered mental illness, alcoholism and substance abuse during his career. Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, or LADY GAGA as she is better known, reportedly got her moniker after singing Radio Gaga every time she entered the studio. One day, when music producer ROB FUSARI sent her a text saying Radio Gaga, his predictive text changed radio to lady and the name stuck. Unfortunately things haven’t stayed amicable between the pair as FUSARI is reportedly suing GAGA for a cool $30.5 million, claiming he co-wrote her songs and helped her get a record deal. Poor GAGA!

Latest CD Releases TONI BRAXTON: Pulse – 4 May This sixth album by the singersongwriter is a mixture of uptempo and contemporary R&B ballads and is her first album in five years. The first three singles are Yesterday, which was released last November, Make My Heart and Hands Tied. KEANE: Night Train – 11 May Night Train is an EP that was born out of the group’s Perfect Symmetry Tour in 2008; the first single, Stop For A Minute, featuring K’NAAN, was released in April. The alternative rock album is already being hailed as “brilliant”. KATIE MELUA: The House – 24 May KATIE’S fourth album brings more up-tempo songs as well as the classic ballads she is famed for – watch out for Red Balloons, Tiny Alien and The Flood.
ROLLING STONES: Exile on Main Street Originally released in 1972 to a great reception, the famed rockers have re-issued the album as a deluxe package with new songs including Plundered My Soul and Dancing in the Light and new versions of Soul Survivor and Loving Cup. R&B singer songwriter KERI HILSON is currently in the studio working on her next album. The twice nominated Grammy star first began writing in 2001 for BRITNEY, CIARA and USHER then released her first album, In a Perfect World, in 2009 with great success. With the backing of TIMBALAND and POLOW DA DON she will be releasing her next album in later 2010.
Forthcoming Concerts JAMIE CULLUM will be at the Sala la Riviera in Madrid on 26 May, while ALICIA KEYS will be at Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona on 2 June presenting her album The Element Of Freedom. U2 will also be in San Sebastian and Sevilla on 26 and 29 September, respectively. MICHAEL BUBLE, the Canadian singing sensation, is appearing in concert in Spain
towards the end of the year – BUBLE will be in Barcelona on 30 October then in Madrid on 31 October. The star, whose debut album was released in February 2003, has had great international success over the years and released his fourth album Crazy Love last October, with the first single Haven’t Met You Yet doing well on the UK and US charts.

Kristina Szekely’s DIARY
T
here was a flurry of very positive activity in Marbella last month. I attended the inaugural Annual Assembly of International Businesspeople’s Associations at the Palacio de Congresos where the mayoress, Angeles Muñoz, reported that the eagerly-awaited Plan General de Ordenación Urbana (PGOU) town plan is now in its very final phase. Providing legal and urban security to boost Marbella’s future development, with private enterprise paying a key role, the new urban plan includes provision for nearly five million square metres of land earmarked for green and other “public use” areas – one of the highest proportions in Andalucía, and quite impressive for a small town – and 2.1 million square metres for public amenities including cultural and educational institutions. The mayoress noted that, of the 18,000 homes that had been built outside the legal parameters of the previous urban plan, 16,500 (over 90 per cent) are being normalised under the newly approved plan. Of the remaining 1,500, 1,100 have not been finished yet and no one is living in them; and the other 400 will probably end up in the courts. That is unfortunate for the owners but it is important to highlight that they are the only ones left having serious difficulties. According to Angeles Muñoz, a recent report by the Patronato de Recaudación showed that, in the first trimestre of this year, the number of real estate transactions was three times more than during the same period last year, and was the highest since 2006. This business initiative – part of the tourism department’s “Marbella Open City” project – is all about showing the world that, “united we are strong”, something the mayoress was able to highlight on an important international stage when she presided over the “Closing Bell

REAL ESTATE IMPRESARIO, INDEFATIGABLE PARTY-GOER, PATRON OF THE ARTS, GENEROUS CHARITY SUPPORTER… KRISTINA SZEKELY IS THE QUEEN OF MARBELLA SOCIETY Ceremony” at Nasdaq in New York – a fantastic promotion for Marbella, arranged by local businesswoman and British Chamber of Commerce in Spain representative Laura Stanbridge. The promotional campaign included a video presentation on Times Square and interviews with such prestigious newspapers as the New York Times and Wall Street Journal and the four biggest American TV channels. Back in Marbella, the main social event of the month was our traditional Easter hat party at La Meridiana. There were about 300 people at the lunch, and everyone was so pleased it was a perfect day; we were all very positive, cheerful and happy, and there were different awards just to have more fun and highlight the event. We had a very active few days when the general assembly of Rotary District 2203, which takes in Andalucía, Murcia, the Baleares, Valencia, Ceuta and Melilla, was held in Marbella. There were 200 people here, representing 64 clubs. During their stay, we organised special excursions including a visit to the Cortijo de Miraflores museum, the meeting room at the town hall, the Dali sculptures in Alameda Park, the Museo de Grabados, etc.; and the general assembly concluded in grand style at La Meridiana, the previous dinner at the Hotel Don Pepe having featured opera in between our courses. I watched the final of the Andalucía Tennis Experience at Puente Romano, an exciting match between the crowd’s favourite, Carla Suárez from the Canary Isles, and the higher-ranked
Italian Flavia Pennetta. Unfortunately, Carla was unable to win her first WTA Tour title, but she put up a good fight for over two hours, eventually losing 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. A handicapped people’s tennis clinic was held in Marbella in conjunction with the Andalucía Tennis Experience, where I was honoured to present the prizes to the very inspiring winners, who have special wheelchairs for competition. I was thrilled when Gilbert O’Sullivan, the famous Irish singer-songwriter, came into the office with his wife and two daughters to say hello. He recalled having met me 25 years before, on real estate business, and it was a great opportunity to share some old memories. One of the most important charity events was a glamorous gala at Incosol in aid of the Children for Peace organisation. They had nine different performances, including Montserrat Caballé solo and singing a duet with her daughter Montserrat Martí Caballé, Los del Río (Macarena) and Kimera, as well as flamenco, salsa and Spanish coplas. The 400 guests included Adnan and Lamia Khashoggi. Long-time residents will recall the golden era two decades ago when he held the most amazing parties here with A-list celebrity guests. At the time he was considered the richest man in the world, and his yacht the Nabila, which was berthed in Puerto Banús, was the largest in the world, had solid gold letters “Nabila” engraved on the boat, and was used in the James Bond film Never Say Never Again. It was nice to see him back in Marbella. I was very honoured to be invited by Antonio Belon to join his brotherhood’s procession in Marbella during Easter week. I’ve seen processions up close before in Sevilla and Málaga but this was the first time I had participated with one of the fraternidades. After four and half hours walking in the procession, my favourite moment came when three of the thrones arrived together in Orange Square around 1 am, very close together, all swaying and being raised in time, the candles flickering in the night air. It was solemn and very beautiful. Every year a prisoner is freed as part of the ceremony and this year it was the former manager of a popular Marbella restaurant who was in the final stages of his sentence. This was happening there and then on the night: he wore one of the traditional hoods while the prison director officially released him. Finally, back to business again and the increasingly optimistic forecasts for this area. Marbella got into recession before anybody
because of the political turbulence, then suffered the property meltdown and the global crisis, but – as the mayoress Angeles Muñoz said – it is the first to be showing signs of coming out of the recession. Marbella tourism is now 49 per cent “national”, or Spanish, whereas before it was just one-third, but I think the foreigners will come back this summer, especially if – in the case of the British – the pound continues to rise. There are other attractive holiday areas for them to visit, like Ibiza, but that’s a wilder place and Marbella has much more to offer for both parents and their children. The navigating is great around the island, but here we have golf, tennis, horseriding, sailing, polo in summer, nightlife, shopping… It is the only small resort city in the world with so much – and such variety. We have the best private schools after Madrid and Barcelona, the best health amenities and sports facilities, including 18 golf clubs, and the best transport communications – just two or three hours from any major European city, and with high-speed rail links to Madrid and Barcelona. In fact, it’s quite fun on the train – you can read or catch up on work – and I’m doing a lot of to-ing and fro-ing between Málaga and Madrid thanks to the AVE train. Our Madrid office is very active at the moment, with apartments in the exclusive Barrio Salamanca suburb starting at €300,000 and with an average price of €600,000-€700,000. Here locally, we have exclusive sole agency rights for the La Corniche project in Nueva Andalucía, with fantastic views and very spacious apartments; and an apartment building, Señorio de Guadalmina, in San Pedro de Alcántara, wellpositioned near the beach – both with on-site offices. Great opportunities! Now that the spring weather is finally here, it is the perfect time to have a look around a reinvigorated real estate market that has rarely been so attractive. We look forward to seeing you soon at one of our offices, or just call us.

SPYKER C8
ON THE ROAD
ne of the most annoying things for a Ferrari owner must be to turn up at an owners’ club meeting, only to find 20 similar cars in the same shade of red already sitting there. It is the kind of situation that really annoys wealthy people who value their own individuality. Such people want to own an architect-designed house, low-volume car or limited edition watch that reflects their status and unique personalities. The commonplace does not figure in their life’s equation. This leads some people to seek a car other than the usual suspects like Aston Martin, Bentley, Ferrari and Lamborghini, whose recent drive to expand their business model with entrylevel models has diluted their brand exclusivity. This is where smaller, specialist manufacturers like Pagani and Spyker enter the frame. But unlike Pagani, whose amazing carbon-fibre supercars come with a price tag that makes a Lamborghini Murciélago seem like a bargain, the new Spyker C8 Aileron offers rarity and hand-made exclusivity for similar money to a well specced Ferrari 599GTB. Priced at £194,000 in the UK, and 198,500 Euro plus taxes in Europe, it is just on the right side of the £200,000 psychological barrier for British buyers. It is very hard for any car to turn heads in Monaco, where money seems to ooze from the very pores of the place, and where Ferraris, Bentleys and Porsches are almost as commonplace as taxis. But even against this
Think different ALWAYS ON THE LOOKOUT FOR A SUPERCAR THAT STANDS OUT FROM THE CROWD, MOTORING AUTHOR, RACING DRIVER AND PHOTO-JOURNALIST IAN KUAH WAS DELIGHTED TO DISCOVER THE EXCEPTIONAL PEDIGREE OF THE SPYKER AILERON
AILERON backdrop of fabulous wealth our pearlescent white Spyker C8 Aileron cut a dash, attracting eyeballs and cameras like an A-rated movie star arriving at the Oscars. As we decamped round the corner from the famous Casino to set up the camera and make sure the car was spotless, tourists and locals alike flocked around, trying to guess the pedigree of this unfamiliar sportscar. “Gee, is this a new Lamborghini?” asked a middle-aged American after he saw the driver’s door swing upwards in the trademark fashion of the Italian supercar marque. “Spyker? Dutch? I didn’t know the Dutch made sportscars,” was his reaction and that of other bystanders. In front of the Casino, the stares and obvious curiosity polarised. Then as we cruised past the street cafes next to the Casino, I glanced at the people who sit around drinking coffee and looking at other people. I could just picture eyes growing wider behind the sea of expensive sunglasses. Had there been a Ferrari or Lamborghini sitting on our bumper, it could consider itself upstaged. The Spyker carries it’s own catwalk with it. Compared to previous Spyker C8 models, the new Aileron is a completely different car under its aluminium skin. Where these cars use racecar style horizontally opposed dampers, a new Lotus developed double wishbone suspension and a longer wheelbase are the keys to the Aileron’s more accomplished ride and handling.

www.societylivingmagazine.com
ON THE ROAD The double wishbones are forged from aluminium, and are supported by linear rate Eibach springs and Bilstein gas-filled dampers. An anti-roll bar at each end provides the means for fine-tuning. The 8.5J and 10.0J x 19-inch alloy wheels on the test car were the optional lightweight forged Rotorblade design, shod with 235/35ZR19 and 295/30ZR19 Michelin Pilot Sport rubber. The 10 spokes on each wheel are angled to extract cooling air past the brakes at speed. The AP Racing brakes are huge 350mm cross-drilled, vented discs in front and 332mm cross-drilled, vented discs at the rear, with a four-pot calliper at each corner holding Ferodo DS2500 fast road pads. The brakes on this pre-production car produce superb retardation, but are grabby on first application. Spyker say the test cars all have this problem, which will be cured by the time customer cars go into production. In line with Spyker’s philosophy of driving purity, there is no ESP or any form of electronic driving aid beyond ABS and EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution). With 3.0 turns lock-to-lock, the car is manoeuvrable around town, and tackles tight hairpin bends on mountain roads with gusto. The power-assisted rack and pinion steering has been calibrated for medium weight and lets you feel what the front wheels are doing, with a gentle movement over undulating road surfaces like on an old Porsche 911.
Spyker claim a torsional stiffness of 29,500Nm/degree for the Aileron, whose aluminium space-frame construction produces a very rigid structure. This gives the car its very all-of-a-piece feeling on the road, and allowed the Lotus engineers to use fairly supple suspension settings. The civilised ride comfort supports Spyker’s claim that the Aileron is designed to be a daily driver rather than a toy for high days and holidays. An optional hydraulic ride height adjustment system raises the front by 40mm at the touch of a button to clear ramps and speed bumps. Coincidentally, this was the third time in three weeks that I had driven on these roads around Monaco, the two previous outings being in the SLS AMG and Audi R8 Spyder. This made for an interesting comparison,
and it quickly became apparent that the Spyker rides a lot better at town speeds than the SLS AMG, whose secondary ride can be a bit sudden at times. However, like the Aileron, the Audi’s low speed damping is very well resolved for a sportscar. Where the more hard-core sporting nature of previous Spyker models made a manual gearbox appropriate, the raison d’être of the Aileron as a GT finds it paired with a six-speed ZF Tiptronic automatic gearbox, which greatly expands the car’s appeal to customers in markets like the US and Far East. This is the gearbox normally linked to the Audi V8 motor, with its control software suitably remapped for the lower weight of the Spyker. There has always been a big debate about whether paddle shifters should be fixed to the steering column or rotate with the wheel. Spyker choose to fix their aluminium paddles to the column, but they are long enough to be operated easily when you have 45 degrees of steering angle applied. If you love details, you will be delighted with the Aileron’s cabin. One of the highlights of all Spyker models, the turned aluminium dashboard and the bespoke switchgear and instrument faces hark back to an era where everything was hand-made from metal rather than mass-produced from plastic. Spyker interiors are so H G Wells you can imagine Captain Nemo driving this car when he is on dry land. Unfortunately, one change necessary for safety homologation was replacement of their distinctive nautical style tiller with a more conventional Audi R8 based airbag wheel.

“It is just on the right side of the €200,000 psychological barrier”
For clients who want to take the pursuit of detail even further, Spyker have teamed up with Chronoswiss to offer an optional package where every instrument bezel and switch is given black dials and the famous Chronoswiss knurled bezel and onion crown finish. This costs €5,000, and a Spyker Chronoswiss watch is also available to match. Spyker take their aviation heritage very seriously. Previous Spyker models used the propeller motif extensively. With the debut of the Aileron, the company has moved into the jet age, with the turbine motif reflected in the design of the alloy wheels and jet engine-like intakes. In the cabin, the aeronautical influence continues with the turbine-look air outlets, the ignition switch with its safety cover and the mechanical gear linkage. Although the latter now controls an automatic gearbox, its fore and aft operation has a raw mechanical feel to it that is quite different from the damped and remote sensation you normally experience in a modern car. This supports the much higher level of tactile interaction Spyker have created to engage the driver. Another delightful detail is the “key”. Reminiscent of the remote control for the Sonic 52

“Visibility is also better so you don’t feel particularly intimidated on narrow streets”
ON THE ROAD Frontiers CD player I once had, this objet d’ art is machined from solid aluminium blocks and bolted together. Like a fine watch, a glass window on its underside shows off its innards, although in this case, instead of a delicate mechanism, it showcases the circuit board and battery. Like the centre caps of the alloy wheels and the exhaust tips, the key has the Latin motto for the original Spyker Company stamped into it. “Nulla tenaci invia est via” literally means “For the tenacious no road is impassable.” This ideology runs through all of Spyker’s activities, whether they are building road cars or racing at the highest levels of international motorsport. Thankfully, the Aileron is not as wide as a traditional mid-engined supercar, and visibility
is also better so you don’t feel particularly intimidated on narrow streets. It is a very easy car to drive, and as the kilometres pass under its wheels, and you pick up the pace, it becomes apparent that its handling is very well resolved. Pushing on a bit in the bends, mild stabilising understeer and good front-end grip can be turned into a more neutral cornering attitude with throttle and steering. I was surprised that Spyker do not offer a limited slip differential, but they say it is not necessary as the Aileron is a GT rather than a hard-core sportscar, and its 45/55 percent weight distribution gives it very good traction anyway. The way the gearbox software has been programmed, the Aileron responds to two distinct ways of driving. When you are very
smooth and progressive with the throttle, even in Sport mode, upshifts are seamless and you could be gliding along effortlessly in a limousine. In maximum attack mode, things speed up commensurately. But you quickly realise that this is a gearbox from a normal road Audi, as its responses are more “normal” than those of the specially calibrated automatic gearboxes in the Aston Martin DB9 or a Mercedes-AMG. A good soundtrack is something the Aileron possesses in spades. The stainless steel exhaust system is made by Ricardo, and has been perfectly tuned to amplify the American muscle car grade V8 rumble within the limits of EU legislation. A full throttle second and third gear sprint through the famous tunnel on the Monaco Grand Prix circuit produced some immensely satisfying ear candy. Later, up on the mountain roads that are part of the Monte Carlo Rally route, the sound of the exhaust echoing off the rock face as the engine sang its full repertoire from low revs

coming out of hairpin bends, to the redline on the straights, was quite intoxicating. In absolute terms, with 400hp at 6,800rpm and 480Nm of torque at 3,500rpm, output of the 4.2 litre Audi V8 is not earth shattering stuff, but unlike some GT cars, which weigh 1,700kg or more, the Spyker Aileron tips the scales at a mere 1,425kg. This is just 45kg more than a Porsche GT3 RS or Pagani Zonda, so it is light for a GT, whose character is better supported by a torquey engine, rather than one with big horsepower at high revs. On paper, the Aileron’s 0-100km/h time of 4.5 seconds, and 300km/h top speed are adequate for a GT, but its performance is not going to move the earth on its axis. However, it is the way the Aileron picks up speed effortlessly in real world conditions that counts and, as Spyker say, this car is not about breaking any speed records. Customers who buy this as a fifth or sixth car will usually have another machine to do that job. The Aileron is happy cruising all day long at 160km/h, and gets up there so quickly even on part throttle that you have to watch your speed where there are limits.
54
www.societylivingmagazine.com
ON THE ROAD It is an effortless cruiser, and wafting along on the motorway you can happily converse without raising your voice. Up the ante and you will find that stability is beyond reproach. The flat-bottomed Spyker has a little downforce over both axles at speed. So where does the Spyker Aileron fit into the automotive world? It is a radical departure from the mass produced GT, and is very much a car for individuals who like to think different. Thankfully the Spyker is an extremely wellmade car, whose toughness and durability has already been proven at Le Mans and other long distance races. Another upside is that your local Audi dealer can fettle its near standard Audi S4 powertrain. At this price point, taking into account its unique design and character, the Spyker Aileron actually does not have any direct rivals as such. This makes the decision to buy one both easier and harder at the same time than choosing between an Aston Martin, Bentley or Ferrari. Easier if you go with your heart and assert your individuality; harder if you are influenced by the opinions of your peers.
“The turned aluminium dashboard and bespoke switchgear and instrument faces hark back to an era where everything was hand-made from metal rather than massproduced from plastic”
To “get” what the Spyker marque has to offer, you must be actively seeking or be able to appreciate a car that goes beyond the mainstream. But whether recognition that this car is for you comes after Zen like introspection, or is simply the result of love at first sight, the Spyker C8 Aileron might just turn out to be your automotive Holy Grail.
WHO ARE SPYKER? A hero from zero Two brothers, Hendrik Jan and Jacobus Spijker, both blacksmiths, founded the original Spyker Company in 1880. With a business founded on building and maintaining carriages, they built their first Benz-engined car in 1898 and received critical acclaim for its quality. The “Golden State Coach” they delivered to Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands the same year is still used today on special occasions by the Dutch royal family. Pioneers in engineering terms, the brothers made the world’s first car with a six-cylinder motor, permanent 4WD and four-wheel brakes in 1903. This was the Spyker 60/80HP. Four years later, a privately entered Spyker 14/18HP Tourer finished second overall in the gruelling Peking-to-Paris raid. Interestingly, its driver, a Monsieur Godart, carried Louis Vuitton luggage in what may well be the first sponsored rally raid car in history. When the revived Spyker company was reminded of this relationship recently, they were more than keen to continue the partnership. In an unusual move, Spyker merged with the Dutch Aircraft Factory NV in 1914, at which point their Latin motto, “Nulla Tenaci invia est via”, was born. Spyker made 100 fighter aircraft and 200 aircraft engines during World War I, and after the war Spyker cars began to show the influence of aeronautical design on their streamlined car bodywork. Spyker cars went on to set new speed and endurance records until the company closed in 1925 after one of the brothers was killed when the cross channel ferry he was on sank with all hands. The Spyker marque was reborn 75 years later, when Dutch entrepreneur Victor Muller, founder and CEO of Spyker Cars NV, unveiled the C8 Spyder at the 2000 Birmingham Motor Show.
The revival of the old marque’s competition pedigree began a year later with the debut of the C8 Double12 R Le Mans endurance racer. A street legal version of this was shown in 2002. Spyker Cars NV went to IPO in 2004, and was listed on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange. Competition successes began to roll in the year after, with the Spyker C8 Spyder GT2R finishing second in the Le Mans GT class of the LMES 1000km of Nurburgring. The same car finished second in the GT2 class at the Dubai round of the FIA GT Championship. A brief foray in Formula One after Spyker bought out the Midland F1 team at the end of 2006 saw them pick up a championship point when Adrian Sutil scored a ninth place finish in the 2007 Japanese GP. Spyker MF1 Racing was sold off to a consortium at the end of the season, to later become the Force India team. Spyker’s race successes continued in endurance racing, and the Spyker Squadron’s best year was 2009 when they finished third overall in the Le Mans Series, and fifth in class in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Their portfolio of unique road cars and race wins makes Spyker Cars NV more than worthy of the original name. As I write this, Spyker Cars NV have moved production to Coventry, which makes logistical sense since the bulk of its components are UK sourced. Victor Muller has also just acquired the ailing Swedish carmaker Saab. He and his team plan to revive this once great marque with the same kind of enthusiasm and individualistic thinking that bean counter-led General Motors quite clearly showed they lacked during the dark years of their tenure. The Spijker brothers would be proud.

I can test at one time. It has been a tedious job (honestly!) but here are my favourites of the month…

Perfect Pout
If you are not blessed with Angelina Jolie lips, rather than turn to collagen injections and risk a trout pout, I recommend Bobbi Brown’s Brightening Lip Gloss. This sheer, reflective formula wakes up your face and helps create the illusion of fuller lips. While on the subject of Bobbi Brown, I am also loving her Smooth Skin Foundation. This formula adjusts to the skin's needs by minimising oil and shine in oilier areas like the T-zone, while hydrating dry areas as needed. Magic. Stockist: El Corte Inglés
The Daly Beauty Regime
Tess Daly’s love life may have taken a knock, but her exclusive range for Marks & Spencer is doing better than ever. It has just won the highly regarded Best New Beauty Range & Packaging prize at the Rodial Beautiful Awards. In fact, the Tess Daly Beauty range has proved so popular that four new products have been added. However, it is the Tess Daly Sun Essentials that gets the thumbs up from me. It contains five mini body beautifiers for sizzling summer glamour. Steal Tess’s summer regime for glowing sun-kissed skin marksandspencer.com

Over the Moon
I must admit I have not been paying as much attention to our male readers as I should. After being told off on a few occasions, I have promised to start including male beauty products once more. First up is Espa Shavemud. This unique product combines an effective shaving preparation with a deep-cleansing mask. Ideal for sensitive skin, it leaves your face feeling smooth, cool and refreshed. A rich-textured shaving mud, it helps your razor glide across the skin for the perfect close shave, while the white China clay (Kaolin) renowned for its highly absorbent properties will help to draw out excess oil and impurities. For the best results leave on while brushing teeth, shave, then rinse off. espaonline.com
Every now and then I get bored with my usual scents and need a change. I have just been introduced to the Thymes Moonflower collection, which has gone down a treat. I am very picky about the scents I choose to wear, plus I am allergic to so many fragrances, but this one is a winner! It is a very feminine fragrance without smelling too girly. My favourite has to be Thymes candle, with its aromas of gilded cinnamon, clove and sugared quince sparkle on fresh myrtle leaves, while rich mahogany dances with dark amber and smooth cognac.

Just like a canvas needs primer so does your face. However, I do get bored with applying my day cream, SPF, primer and FINALLY my make-up. So I couldn’t wait to get my hands on Cover FX BritePrep FX. An "anti-UV" primer that protects skin against the signs of photo-ageing, which are sun spots, hyper-pigmentation, and sallow/dull tone. With an SPF of 50 this product is great simply as sun protection, even if you're not wearing foundation over the top. coverfx.com

4. Stay on your hands and knees while lifting and extending the right leg directly behind. The leg should be slightly higher than hip level and, with the knee facing down, swing the leg from right to left. Do 50 reps.
5.
THE WORK OUT It’s really important to change up your toning exercises on a regular basis so you don’t over work any muscle groups and create bulk. By changing up the sequences, it keeps the muscles really awake and alert and pulls the larger muscle groups in so that your muscular structure is teeny-tiny but strong, with lots of sexy definition.

Arms: This exercise works several small muscles at once and use no more than three-pound (1.4-kilogram) weights to combat bulking.
1.
Arm circles… stand with the feet shoulder width apart and extend your arms to the sides at shoulder height. Keeping the shoulders down, do 25 small arm circles going backwards, then 25 circles going forward.
2. Single-arm pull… continue to stand with the feet shoulder-width apart, placing your left hand on the hip, right arm straight out to the side with the palm facing the floor. Pull the right elbow to the hip, twisting the palm to the ceiling, and then raise arm to a high “V”. Do 50 reps on each side.
3.
Hold a one to three-pound weight above your head with the elbow bent at a 90degree angle. Then lift the weight straight over your head. Do 50 reps on each side.
4. Diagonal pull-up… with weights in each hand, both arms to the left side of the body. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold the left arm in place while pulling the right arm across your body to the right side of your hips. Then raise the right arm up to a high diagonal before returning to the starting position; 50 reps on each side.
Cardio: If you want to shed fat, cardio is the key. Dance aerobics is great because the constantly changing choreography really targets the often-ignored accessory muscles. If dance classes are not readily available to you try a combination of skips, sashays, grapevines, knee lifts and sprints. Remember: it's crucial to break a sweat every day. health&beauty MARBELLA’S COSMETIC DENTAL CLINIC Friendly treatments – for the perfect smile WORDS JESSICA WHITE
et’s face it, we all want teeth to rival a superstar’s – perfectly straight, gleaming white and a with a smile that shines like a star. Well, Dr Gerhard Steinruck from Marbella’s Cosmetic Dental Clinic is the man to go to for that perfect smile. The clinic offers many treatments that can help with any ailment in the mouth, such as full ceramic crowns, veneers, laser whitening and, the most impressive, minimally invasive implants. Now I must confess that going to the dentist has never been one of my favourite pastimes but Dr Steinruck’s manner and charm had me at ease as soon as I entered the clinic, and once he explained some of the treatments he carries out I was easily assured that they are now less invasive and not something to be worried about. Not knowing much about dentistry I wasn’t sure what “minimally invasive implants” were. Dr Steinruck explained that there was now a much easier way to fill a gap in the mouth if a tooth had fallen out. An artificial root is made out of titanium and inserted into the bone via a three-millimetre hole; the new tooth is then screwed onto the root.

The combination of the implant and the technique used dramatically reduces swelling and the pain as no stitches are used and no cuts are made. The area surrounding the tooth isn’t damaged and patients can carry on with everyday life as soon as the procedure is finished. Dr Steinruck has also discovered that many patients would rather be sedated when having certain treatments, which he can accommodate easily – patients can sit in the relaxing massage chair for the two hours after sedation during which they are required to stay at the clinic. Another amazing piece of technology used by Gerhard is the Easyshade computer. One of two on the Coast, the machine matches the colour, shade and warmth of your teeth so that new teeth inserted into the mouth will be exactly the same colour and look part of your original set. Dr Steinruck is also the emergency dentist for Helicopteros Sanitarios and speaks four languages – thus further putting his patients at ease – while the clinic is bright and modern with the kind of friendly atmosphere all of us need when we are at the dentists.

Ask the surgeon ... Rhinoplasty THIS MONTH, IN OUR REGULAR SERIES OF ARTICLES ON LATEST TECHNIQUES AND TRENDS IN SURGERY, PLASTIC, AESTHETIC AND RECONSTRUCTION SURGEON DR KAI O. KAYE FROM OCEAN CLINIC IN MARBELLA ANSWERS SOME COMMON QUESTIONS
Q A
Is there a minimum age to undergo rhinoplasty?
The size and shape of a nose change during adolescence and growth. Therefore, plastic surgeons generally recommend waiting until at least 16 years of age to consider rhinoplasty. Boys should generally wait longer because they complete their developmental phase later than girls. An exception to this rule is a baby that is born with congenital facial deformity such as a cleft lip. In this child, surgical corrections are made to the nose very early on so that the nose will grow in a normal fashion.
Q What facial features can affect the
appearance of the nose?
A The proportion of a nose to that of the rest
of the face, especially when viewed from the side, is closely linked to the proportions of the chin. Often a weak chin can make a nose appear too large for the face, or vice versa. Attention to this relationship is very important in the assessment of the nose and surgical planning. There are times when surgery on the chin (genioplasty) is an essential adjunct to a rhinoplasty. At this time, the chin can be augmented or brought forward (advancement genioplasty), or reduced or pushed backwards (reduction genioplasty or setback).
Q
What are the goals of "cosmetic" rhinoplasty and how are they achieved?
A The first intranasal rhinoplasty was
performed in the 19th century on a young man whose large nose caused him so much embarrassment, he was afraid to appear in public. The size and shape of your nose is largely an inherited characteristic. Bone and cartilage create the skeletal foundation of your nose, over which skin is draped. Rhinoplasty can reduce the
84
www.societylivingmagazine.com
skeletal structure of a large nose by removing the nasal hump or by narrowing the bony and cartilaginous structures. On the other hand, for people with a lack of nasal projection or flat nasal bridge, such as those of African or Asian descent, the nasal framework can be augmented with a graft or an implant. The nasal bony and cartilaginous frame structure can also be straightened in the case of a crooked nose, while the shape and slope of the bridge can be made more natural. Rhinoplasty can also alter the size, shape, projection and angle of the nasal tip. A hanging nasal tip can be lifted and the angle between the nose and the lip can be altered. A small pinched tip can be made more natural looking, while an overly projected "Pinocchio" tip can be reduced. A wide, boxy or bulbous nasal tip can be shaped to a more natural form. Rhinoplasty can also reduce the size of the large and flared nasal nostril, or open and widen a pinched nostril.
Q What is the difference between an “open” and a “closed” rhinoplasty technique?
A With the “open” technique, the
plastic surgeon reaches the nasal bones through incisions inside the nostrils and across the columella – the tissues separating the nostrils. With the so-called “closed” technique, the surgeon accesses nasal bones through an incision inside the nostrils, and then lifts the skin away from the underlying bones and cartilage. Some call this a “scar-less rhinoplasty”, which is misleading, because the scars are only placed hidden inside the nostrils.
Q
Open" or "closed" rhinoplasty: which one is better?
A A decision that you and your plastic
surgeon will have to discuss is whether the "open" or "closed" technique of rhinoplasty is best for you — closed being the more traditional kind, but open allowing a better access and overview, especially in complicated cases.
Q
Is the operation done under general anesthesia and does the patient have to stay in the hospital?
A A correction of the nasal tip only can
be performed under sedation (twilight anesthesia) and often as a day-case surgery; a reduction of the bony frame or extensive septal work mostly requires a general anesthesia. In the second case most plastic surgeons keep the patient one night in hospital.
Q How long does the recovery take? A Depending on the extent of the
surgery, primary recovery takes between seven (nose tip) and 14 days (full rhinoplasty); if an external splint has been used (bone correction) it can come off after 10-12 days. The final result, especially if the internal work is extensive and there has been a lot of work performed on the tip, can take six to eight months to achieve, until all of the swelling is gone and the skin of the nose has adapted itself to the new shape. At the end of the evening Marco reveals the scores: the celebrity with the highest points wins automatic passage to the next round, while the other two plead with Marco for their survival. The celebrity he chooses goes to the next round and the other one faces automatic “kitchen burnout”. The team at Society would like to wish Russell the best of luck!

Yanx restaurant in Nueva Andalucía has had a pre-summer revamp to cater for the sports lovers among us and to prepare for the World Cup in June. A large screen has been added, mainly for sporting events but also a great display screen for book launches, wine tasting and slide shows for their different lunchtime events.
Formula 1 is currently being shown on Sundays although this does not interfere with the Sunday brunch meetings of the American Classic Car Owners Club on the first Sunday of every month – which everyone is invited to. The new menu has also been launched and, along with the classic and legendary dishes, there are several new inventions such as the Sticky Fingers combo – a large silver platter of Asian sticky ribs, Yanx’ famous hot wings, loaded cheese and bacon skins with sticks and dips (which is recommended to share). The new cocktail list deserves another special mention as the Limoncello Sangria with cloudy lemonade and freshly sliced strawberries is a huge hit; as are the Melon Margaritas and Espresso Martinis. The restaurant is launching a new wine list mid-May for those who like a glass of something chilled – including the fashionable Blush wines – in the summer heat. Yanx: Tel. 952 818 861 / cafeyanx.com

With a fresh, lighter menu of which almost 80 per cent features new dishes, diners can enjoy a delicious meal and then relax on one of the many white beds sipping champagne or one of the beach club’s worldfamous cocktails. Dishes on the new menu include: togarashispiced, honey-glazed chick salad mixed with greens, grapefruit segments, red onions, red beets and cashew nuts in a lemon dressing; mixed melon lasagne – of watermelon, green melon and cantaloupe – especially refreshing in the summer heat; crab meat and lobster summer rolls – rice paper filled with rice noodles, crab and lobster meat, cucumber and coriander with a mango and yoghurt dressing, served with calamari rings, a shot of gazpacho and a shrimp salad. The sushi menu has been revamped and includes “Me and You, Sushi for Two”, consisting of Picasso roll, deep sea roll, salmon, tuna,
shrimp, sashimi and nigiri. And there are some fantastic fish dishes such as the grilled Atlantic salmon served on a stack of corn and jalapeno tortillas with avocado, tomato and lime salsa topped with sour cream; and grilled seabass served with lamb’s lettuce and baby tomato salad in balsamic dressing with sun-dried tomato pesto on a bed of grilled potato scallops. The traditional classics are still on the menu, for example, Kobe Beef Sliders – a favourite of all diners – and some other dishes have a 2010 twist. While head chef Mario Larese produces his culinary delights in the kitchen, bar manager James Burton knocks up some taste sensations at the cocktail bar. As well as Nikki Beach classics such as the mojito, new cocktails include Blackberry Mint Smash – fresh blackberries, cachaca, cassis, fresh mint; Jumbled Fruit Julep – sky vodka mixed with fresh strawberry and mint topped with apple and pink grapefruit juice; Koh Samui Slinger – sky vodka, black current liqueur and grapefruit, topped with Red Bull or champagne. This month kicks off a fabulous summer of events with the ever-popular Amazing Sundays beginning on 2 May, the opening White Party on 27 May, a Hawaiian party on 28 May and a Moroccan Charm party on 29 May. Residents and visitors to the Coast can look forward to many more events throughout the summer, as well as Nikki Beach opening for dinner from 2 July with a more elaborate, fine dining menu.

PASSION CAFÉ NEW TAKEAWAY HOME-BAKING SERVICE AT TOP RESTAURANT Malcolm and Kaitriona have opened a special takeaway home-bake section at the everpopular Passion Café restaurant in San Pedro de Alcántara. After months of research they came to the conclusion there was a lack of proper home-baked patisserie that clients would be proud to display on their table. They selected the ingredients based on their quality: Kerrygold butter, Homepride flour and Belgian chocolate – and you can taste the difference! Freshly baked daily, the range of products on offer includes breads, scones and muffins, patisserie and whole cakes available to order for all occasions. With just two days’ notice you can receive an individually designed cake for your child’s birthday or celebration. All products are
ready-boxed and ready to go – ideal for an impromptu party or just a nice treat to take to friends. There are old favourites such as crumbles, lemon meringue pie and chocolate éclairs; as well as more inspired creations such as individual packs of cup cakes, Mars bar cheesecake and cranberry flapjacks – an extensive selection not available anywhere else on the Coast. There is easy parking in the La Colonia commercial centre, and the home-bake section is open seven days a week, all day 9am to 6pm. Trade enquiries are welcome. Many of the world’s leading women tennis players took to the Puente Romano courts in Marbella for the second Andalucía Tennis Experience tournament – part of the international WTA Tour. SOCIETY POKER
Getting into the action IN RECENT YEARS, THE GAME HAS MOVED FROM CASINOS AND BACKROOM CARD TABLES TO THE SMALL SCREEN – BECOMING SOMETHING OF A TV PHENOMENON AND GAINING NEW ADEPTS ACROSS THE SPECTRUM OF SOCIETY… THIS MONTH WE LAUNCH A REGULAR NEW FEATURE ON POKER – FOR BEGINNERS AND EXPERIENCED HANDS
BY ‘‘MARBELLA SLIM’’ ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS Those of you familiar with my articles in the Daily Star and Daily Express will know I like to try to cater to everyone from outright beginners to the more serious players among you. For the beginners you’ll find the “HAND RANKING” insert published with this article useful to keep beside you at all times. I would further suggest you sign up for free with one of the big established sites like PokerStars or Victor Chandler where you can play on their “play money” areas for as long as you like for nothing while you pick up the basics of Texas Hold’em. Both sites have excellent free tutorials available which will point out some of the deeper aspects of the game. Nothing really beats the act of playing itself and when you become fully familiar and bored with the “play money” games you can begin to safely graduate to the low stakes real cash games and start your poker entertainment with valuable experience under your belt.
NEWBIES: POKER SCHOOL
EXPERIENCED: POKER SCHOOL
Okay, newbies, here’s a simple test to keep you on your toes. Come up with your own answer before you read our solution. Question: You have been dealt a pair of Fours as hole cards in a No-Limit Texas Hold’em game. You are at a full table of 10 players sitting in an early position. The cagey player in the under-the-gun seat ahead of you has been quiet for several hands but has opened the betting on this hand. What should you do? Answer: With pocket Fours you have approximately a one in eight chance of landing three-of-a-kind when the flop comes down. The threat is posed by the pre-flop raise from a conservative player in the early position, which suggests he’s holding at least an Ace and more likely a big premium pair. Almost any high card paired (or worse) by the outcome of the flop is going to beat your pair of Fours if you fail to make a set. You’ve also got a lot of players left to act after you, and if you call this bet you might find the pot being re-raised again.
You’re up to $9,000 in tournament chips and the blinds are now at $200-$400. A new hand is dealt and action folds to you in middle position. You take a peek at your cards, King of Diamonds-Queen of Clubs. Good enough for a raise based on your previous play so you take it up to $1,500. The players in the blinds have slightly bigger stacks than you and both of them call to see the flop deliver Ace of SpadesSix-Two of Hearts. Both your opponents check. You’ve got position on them and after your pre-flop raise they are expecting you to make a continuation bet. Why not mix things up and check back with the intention of making a delayed C-bet on the turn? When you check the flop as well, they will likely get suspicious of your play. Wait for the turn card to come out and if they both check again throw your bet out there. With $4,500 in the pot, a delayed C-bet sized around $3,000 should take it down for you.
HISTORIC HAND: DAVID vs. DANIEL vs. DOYLE Episode nine of the latest High Stakes Poker series saw Daniel Negreanu in unfamiliar territory as he struggled to read the game and paid the price for it. Doyle Brunson kept grabbing the wrong end of the stick too. In one hand, Negreanu raised the pot to $3,000 with Ten-Jack of Spades. Doyle Brunson called with pocket Queens and so did David Benyamine with Seven-Five of Spades. The flop came Nine of Clubs-Eight-Three of Spades. Negreanu raised with his flush draw and both his opponents called. With $36,900 in the pot, the turn delivered another Queen for Doyle to make his set – but it was the Queen of Spades! Negreanu and Benyamine both completed their flushes. All three players checked cagily. When an Ace of Hearts appeared on the river, Benyamine check-raised when Negreanu made it $26,200 to play on and was called by Brunson. The 38-year-old Frenchman raised to $101,200. Negreanu looked gutted and confused and eventually folded the best hand. Doyle was in similar territory as far as the confusion went but called with the worse hand on the chance that Benyamine was bluffing. Negreanu kicked himself when he saw what Benyamine was holding.
