Cool party scene…and a generous commitment to charities

T

hese might be difficult times but that is certainly no reason for putting our traditional summer revelry on hold. On the contrary… and especially because, in summer, the Costa del Sol really comes into its own – putting the capital P in Party. As our expanded Society coverage this month shows, from June through to September (summer officially ends in Spain on 22 September) the Coast is a hotspot of chic beach club fun and chilling out, as well as the capital of gala glam. In the latter case, of course, there is an added – and, during these times, more serious and important – element: raising funds for worthy charities. To that end, in addition to the traditional galas at this time of the year, Eva Longoria and Málaga’s favourite son, Antonio Banderas, will be co-hosting the inaugural Starlite Gala on 7 August at Villa Padierna. As Kristina Szekely, the “queen of the Marbella social scene”, reveals in her diary this issue, this is going to be the mega event of the season and an excellent opportunity to consolidate Marbella’s

image, not only as a playground of the rich and famous but also as a generous supporter of the deprived and needy. In this case, funds raised from the gala will go towards programmes for special needs children, award scholarships for students to study abroad, the construction of schools in Mexico and a local foundation. Another celebrity who is deeply committed to helping the less privileged is Gwyneth Paltrow. In our cover feature this month, the Academy Award-winning actress talks about her latest role in Iron Man 2 and her work with the Bent On Learning organisation, which provides weekly yoga and meditation classes to New York City public school children with the aim of helping them to be healthier and happier and thus better prepared to learn. Returning to the less serious themes of summer on the Coast, our fashion team headed to Tarifa where they shot a stunning feature inspired by Shakespeare’s The Tempest; we discover how the Jaguar XJ is breaking the mould; and we offer some valuable tips on how to stay glamorous on the beach.

This bumper issue also includes the latest edition of Beautiful Home magazine, featuring an exclusive interview with designer Lisa Stickley; innovative design trends, state-ofthe-art electronics; great ideas to help us live outdoors in comfort and style over summer (and into autumn); some hot tips for decorating the home over summer; and a guide to sprucing things up around the house – over just one weekend! From all of us at Society Living and Beautiful Home, we hope you have an enjoyable and relaxing July.

GLAMOUR DIGEST Jazzing up the summer look They always say less is more…but this summer I just don’t think that’s the case. Chunky bracelets, loads of bangles, necklaces and more are just what we need to update outfits in the wardrobe that may have been there for a while and seen a party or two. Block-coloured dresses and casual linen trousers that we all live in on hot sunny days on the Coast need something to jazz them up a little, and sometimes silver and gold just doesn’t cut it. Add some colour: it won’t only get you noticed, it will make you smile. accessorize.com

CULTURAL CORNER Movie of the Month Inception LEONARDO (swoon! I’m sure he gets better with age) DICAPRIO stars as Dom Cobb, a thief who is well-practised in the art of “extraction”, which is stealing secrets from people in their deep subconscious during their dream state. Cobb’s ability makes him very valuable but essentially a fugitive, costing him all he has ever loved. In a chance to redeem himself his last job is to cause an “inception”, planting an idea in the mind instead of stealing one. If Cobb and his team succeed they have accomplished a perfect crime; however, forces are at work to stop Cobb and he is the only one who can see his enemy coming. A host of stars join DICAPRIO including KEN WATANABE (The Last Samurai), JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT, MARION COTILLARD, ELLEN PAGE, TOM HARDY and CILLIAN MURPHY – as well as veteran actor MICHAEL CAINE playing a professor who introduces Cobb to his sidekick.

Quick clips I Adam Sandler is all set to appear in the new film Jack and Jill, apparently playing both Jack and his twin sister Jill – hilarious moments will surely ensue.

I The stars of the original A Team TV show have apparently slated the film remake, with Mr. T, who played BA Baracus, saying it is too graphic and nothing like the series on television.

I It is many people’s worst nightmare being buried alive and Ryan Reynolds must overcome this fate in a thriller aptly named Buried to be released later this year. Luckily Reynolds has an easier role to play in Most Wanted where he teams up again with Sandra Bullock to play an agent handling her when she goes on the run.

I After 20 years of searching, Jaws has finally been caught – well almost. The mechanical shark that was seen in the terrifying 1975 blockbuster was lost after it was dumped in an unknown location in 1990 but it has been found after a long search, at an LA junkyard. Phew!

I The gorgeous Patrick Dempsey will be back on the big screen soon in Flypaper about a bank that gets robbed by two groups of crooks at the same time, only to come under fire from a secret enemy (Dempsey) who will stop at nothing to save the woman he loves. I Stanley Tucci and Neal McDonough have been signed up to star in Captain America: The First Avenger, which also stars Hollywood greats Samuel L. Jackson and Tommy Lee Jones.

I Sources have revealed that Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley is the new Megan Fox – at least in the latest Transformers movie. The third film will see Rosie playing Shia LaBeouf’s love interest after Fox reportedly left following a public rift with director Michael Bay, accusing him of “abusive behaviour” on set.

I John Corbett of Sex and The City fame has revealed he had to lie to his own mother about the second film, released in May. Telling his mother he was working in Ireland when he was actually in Morocco filming surely ensured some grounding from his mum when he returned home. I Superman should be flying onto our screens in early 2012 with Christopher Nolan on producing duties, but no one actually signed on for the role of the superhero. Other superhero characters due to be made into movies are Flash, Wonder Woman and Aquaman. w w w. s o c i e t y l i v i n g m a g a z i n e . c o m

Coast, taking a break from recording her debut album; the singer says she can’t wait to perform in her home country. MICHAEL JACKSON fans will be able to moonwalk with their idol when a new dancing and singing game featuring the deceased star is released. The launch of the un-named game will likely coincide with the debut of a new album containing unreleased songs by JACKSON. COLDPLAY are expected to release their fifth album by the end of the year. The alternative rock band have been in the studio recording the album, which is said to have some “killer tunes” and is the follow up to the 2008 album Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends – which has sold 8.1 million worldwide. Singer PETER ANDRE has observed that his marriage to KATIE PRICE aka JORDAN was weird (well, dur!). The star says the relationship between them was so quick it wasn’t a natural process. He also admits that Katie didn’t allow him to have a stag do, something he will

rectify later this year when he goes away with the boys. Talking of marriage – what is it with singers suddenly having affairs when we all thought they were happily married. RONAN KEATING has a lot of sucking up to do with wife YVONNE if she takes him back after the affair he had with a dancer was uncovered. Sources say RONAN is hoping to make a fresh start with the new house they bought earlier this year; let’s hope he keeps his promises this time. SEAN COOMBS aka P. DIDDY has told a British newspaper he hopes to be invited to co-star at RUSSELL BRAND’S wedding but he definitely won’t be best man – revealing his friends’ girlfriends don’t really trust him. The rapper, who stars alongside the funnyman in new movie Get Him to the Greek, did say though that he will have a special role in the wedding as he is writing a song to help celebrate the occasion. LILY ALLEN has said she hopes her future will be less in the public eye and she wants to stay away from the limelight. The singer has also recently claimed she is giving up her music career to concentrate on a fashion venture and says she plans to have children with boyfriend SAM COOPER. Singer RICKY MARTIN is to play the part of Che in the new production of Evita, which will run in New York’s Broadway theatre district. The musical is scheduled to open in spring 2012 and will also star Argentine actress ELENA ROGER stepping into MADONNA’S shoes as Eva Peron. Britain’s Got Talent finalist SUBO (SUSAN BOYLE) is expected to sing for Pope Benedict XVI when he makes his first visit to Britain in September. There will be a public mass in Glasgow and SUSAN is set to perform for the Pope and around 100,000 worshippers. LADY GAGA’S Bad Romance is on track to become the most downloaded song of the year, according to Ovi Music download charts. The pop princess has two songs in the top 10, with Telephone in at number eight. According to guitarist RICHIE SAMBORA, when BON JOVI were young they said they would play in a toilet just for somewhere to play and get the band noticed. I’m sure they get better venues these days.

ROBBIE WILLIAMS is releasing a greatest hits album after being in the music industry 20 years, albeit with some years away studying UFOs or something equally bizarre. The album, entitled In and Out of Consciousness, will feature 39 songs from his illustrious career

Sources say Robbie’s wifeto-be got fed up when he was watching football constantly and has gone to stay with her mother until it is finished. SOMusic 2010 takes place in Barcelona with headliners THE BLACK EYES PEAS and special guest DAVID GUETTA on 3 July; while Benacassim kicks off on 12 July for four days with bands and singers including DIZZIE RASCAL, KASABIAN and THE PRODIGY.

GWYNETH PALTROW RETURNS AS VIRGINIA “PEPPER” POTTS IN IRON MAN 2 Compiled by Nicola McGeorge

W

hen Gwyneth Paltrow signed up for the first Iron Man film she placed her trust in the considerable talents of director Jon Favreau because, as she points out, while she was making it she really had no idea how it would turn out – just a hunch that the director was about to deliver something special. The chance to work opposite Robert Downey Jr., who plays playboy billionaire Tony Stark/ Iron Man, was also a huge draw. “Robert and I have a very good rhythm together,” she notes. But it was, essentially, a leap of faith that paid off spectacularly.

“I committed to it without ever reading anything; there wasn’t really a script at that point,” she says. “It was just Jon explaining the character to me, explaining how the relationships were going to be and kind of asking for that trust, that leap of faith. “I was really happy and surprised when I saw the first film. Because I didn’t even know the plot, even when we were doing it, I couldn’t really piece it together and I didn’t understand the whole picture. “And so when I saw the finished film I was happily surprised with how it all turned out. The reason that I decided to do the first movie is because I always wanted to work with Robert and I love Jon, who I’d known for a long time.

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

“And both Jon and Robert were really encouraging and they said it would be fun. And I’m so glad I did it because it was a great experience and a great movie.” She was, therefore, delighted to be back on board, playing Pepper Potts once again for Iron Man 2. The movie starts six months after the first one ended and Stark is living under intense media scrutiny and political pressure now that the world knows that he is Iron Man. Revealing Stark as Iron Man marked the movie out to be very different from others in the same comic book genre, says Paltrow. “I do think it was a very fresh thing to do,” she says. “Revealing that Tony Stark is Iron Man at the end of the first film and not doing the whole Batman secret identity thing was a very fresh take and I think it allows for a whole world of possibilities that don’t normally exist in this kind of movie. “Normally the hero’s identity is hidden and now we can do a whole host of things that you normally don’t get to see.” Indeed, Favreau’s blend of wit and stunning action sequences, his crafting of the CGI with live action and, most of all, his passion for developing strong characters are all hallmarks of the first film that have been incorporated into – and improved on – for the second. Take, for instance, Stark’s relationship with his trusted aide, Pepper Potts. In the first film she was his assistant and the person who knew him best in the entire world. Behind that brash, arrogant exterior, Pepper knew that there was a man struggling to do the right thing, but rarely succeeding. She could see the good in Stark where others couldn’t. “I think part of the appeal of Tony Stark is that he is damaged and he is a complicated figure,” says Paltrow. “I think he represents the dark side in all of us and that hope that we all overcome our own demons – he’s sort of the personification of that. And it’s essential that we show that he has these demons and he is trying to overcome them.” Along with Tony and Pepper’s professional relationship there’s clearly a mutual attraction that plays out with some flirtatious banter and that’s expanded on in the new movie. “When we start Iron Man 2 Pepper and Tony are very much in the same vibe,” she says. “There’s that banter they’ve got and they have great chemistry. And then, as the movie progresses, Pepper is given more responsibility and she’s promoted and it’s nice to see her sort of grow up in that way. I think it really suits her; the job fits her really well.” Paltrow believes that one of the key factors in Iron Man’s success is that, even though the characters are drawn from the fantastic universe of Marvel Comics, they are, in fact, grounded in reality and, crucially, totally believable. 24

Revealing that Tony Stark is Iron Man at the end of the first film and not doing the whole Batman secret identity thing was a very fresh take and I think it allows for a whole world of possibilities that don’t normally exist in this kind of movie.

“Like Pepper, you know, she is the voice of reason. She’s very grounded – a good girl, a very grounded person. I think the first movie really defined the whole world that these characters inhabit – it has its own pizzazz, it’s own kind of humour. “But I don’t think it would work as well if Tony was fighting supernatural villains. It is based in a kind of reality – the humour, the action – and I think that’s right and it works.” Paltrow was delighted that writer Justin Theroux joined the closely-knit creative team behind Iron Man but part of the fun of acting on the films is that Favreau allows, and indeed encourages, his cast to improvise if they feel the need, she says, which makes the process challenging and fun. “Justin’s a great writer and he did some great stuff. He’s a really, really talented artist. But then, we still do our improv thing and we change it up just because that’s how Robert and I like to work and that’s how we like to keep things fresh and super naturalistic.” Iron Man told the origin story and now Iron Man 2 is building on that success, she says; turning up on set felt like going home and she

’’

slipped back into the character easily. “It was great,” she says of the experience of working on the new film, “because we had the whole backbone of the first movie – we knew who we were already; there was less of a discovery process. “When you turn up for the first day on a film it’s usually like, ‘Oh my gosh, what am I doing? How is this going to work out?’ But this was like putting on a pair of old shoes. It was like, ‘I know how to do this girl……” The new acting talent joining the cast includes Scarlett Johansson as Natalie Rushman, a demure young woman who takes over Pepper’s old job as Tony’s assistant when she is promoted to CEO of Stark Industries. Later in the story, Natalie reveals herself to be The Black Widow. “It was great with Scarlett there because it just adds a whole new layer, especially in terms of Tony and Pepper,” says Paltrow. “There’s always a reason why they never quite get together and then in walks this young, gorgeous bombshell and it really throws Pepper off her course. “It’s a really fun thing to play and it’s been great having Scarlett there because she’s a really great actress.”

The other newcomers include Sam Rockwell who plays Justin Hammer, a business rival who is out to steal Tony Stark’s crown, and Don Cheadle as Col. James “Rhodey” Rhodes. “The thing about Sam Rockwell is that he is a really, really good actor. He’s in the same universe as Robert in terms of skill and talent. So to have somebody playing his foil in that way is perfect. He’s funny, he’s really good and he adds a whole new twist. “And Don Cheadle is just heaven on earth. He’s so brilliant and he’s such a calm, grounding person to be around. He’s so good; it’s great that he’s part of this.” Paltrow, just like the other key characters, was

I think part of the appeal of Tony Stark is that he is damaged and he is a complicated figure.

’’

faced with the challenge of working with green screen for Iron Man 2. She likens it to working in the theatre where you just have to use the power of your imagination a little more. “Jon is still into making everything as real as possible and using live action whenever possible but there are green screen moments

because he is taking it to the next level,” she says. “It’s kind of like when you’re in that theatre space when you do green screen and conjure up the world for yourself a little bit.” It does mean, of course, that watching the finished Iron Man 2, with all the CGI shots in, will have an element of surprise for Paltrow – just like it was for the original film. “Yes, once again there’s so much that I won’t know until I see it,” she says. “Because when we were on set it was changing shape all of the time. And there will be all of the effects so by the time I get to see it I’m sure I’ll be completely blown away by what Jon and his team have put together.” w w w. s o c i e t y l i v i n g m a g a z i n e . c o m

arbella’s glittering summer gala season continues this month, as we also look forward to a truly mega event in August. The 1st Starlite Gala will be held at Villa Padierna on 7 August, where Eva Longoria and Antonio Banderas – accompanied by their respective spouses, basketballer Tony Parker and Melanie Griffith – will be the co-hosts of a starstudded evening whose main purpose is to raise funds to improve the quality of the lives of communities, families and children around the world. Three special charity foundations will be the main beneficiaries: Eva’s Heroes, which funds programmes for special needs children; Banderas’ Fundacion Lágrimas y Favores, providing award scholarships for students from Málaga to study abroad; and Niños en Alegríía, which constructs schools in Mexico. A special donation will also be made to a local foundation in Marbella. This really is going to be the event of the year. There will be live performances by international artists and a charity auction featuring unique celebrity

experiences, including visiting Eva on the Desperate Housewives set and flying to Los Angeles for an NBA match. Sandra García-Sanjuán (from Avory International Celebrity Access) is making sure there will be loads of international and national celebrities present, and I, Gunilla Von Bismarck, Olivia Valere and other friends here in Marbella have set up a board to promote the event and attract local support. Tables are available for €10,000 (Platinum – with the presence of a celebrity) or €8,000 (Gold); and individual tickets for up to €1,000, depending on who is sitting at your table. There are also different packages for sponsors; and exclusive coverage of the event has been sold to Hola internationally, so Marbella is going to be projected all over

the world. Meanwhile, other glamorous galas will also be helping to make it a memorable summer. The annual gala for Marbella Rotary, of which I am president, is being held at La Concepción on 9 July, with tickets available for €120; Concordia, the AIDS charity, will be holding their gala on 24 July at Marbella Club Hotel, with a “Bollywood” theme; and there is a homage in my honour, on behalf of the Spanish Heart Foundation, at Olivia Valere’s nightclub on 4 August. So take your pick – or come to them all! Marbella has been getting more good press lately, with the urban town plan now approved and most of the affected properties “regularised” (just some ongoing negotiations with developers to determine

compensation for the town hall); the Coast’s famed weather finally here; and many new places opening… restaurants, boutiques and beach clubs, including La Moraga at Don Pepe hotel. Business wise, these are very exciting times for Marbella. People in business have noticed that sales are up, and clients are spending again, which is what is needed for us to get through the crisis. The town hall has launched a new tourism website (marbellaexclusive.com), which was presented by the mayoress, Angeles Muñoz, at Don Carlos hotel, incorporates all the municipality’s services and offers new opportunities to local businesses. With Ramadan falling in August, many people from the Middle East will be coming here in July this year, so it should be a busy month. One of the main news items last month was the announcement that a member of the Qatari royal family, Sheikh Abdallah bin Nasser AlThani, has bought Málaga football club – and many of the meetings and negotiations were conducted in Marbella. Here at our main office in Benabola, we have rented space upstairs for a new restaurant, the La Sala bar and grill, which will open towards the end of July, offering an elegant and upmarket venue for diners. We also have another 300 metre square space for rent on the same floor. As for property sales, people are now realising they shouldn’t wait because homes are being snapped up before their eyes. Our Madrid office is very active, at least until August when

everyone comes down here; the office in Gibraltar is picking up; and, even though it is slightly quieter than Marbella, business in Sotogrande is still solid. We have one particularly beautiful house in Sotogrande, a dream property overlooking a golf course and the sea, with an amazing spa. The price is between €7 million and €8 million, and we had five visits in two weeks last month, so the elite are definitely returning. Many people prefer the peacefullness and sedate ambience of Sotogrande, where socialising tends to be more private and intimate, though always with the option of convenient access to Marbella, and the close proximity of Gibraltar. And there is the added advantage that Sotogrande is cheaper than Marbella. On the social scene, there was a lively atmosphere at the Marbella fair, with friends enjoying the festivities at the many different casetas; and I really enjoyed the opening of Buddha Beach, where they had a host of colourful entertainment, including someone playing an electric violin with the strings illuminated in blue, a saxophonist, Brazilian dancers and go go dancers in a golden cage.

Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the Amsudan fund-raising day in the country at Antequera, but friends told me it was incredible – don’t miss the next one! I was one of the guest speakers at a round-table conference organised by the Asociacióón de Mujeres Profesionales y Empresariales de Málaga, where advice was provided on how to start up a business internationally; and I appeared on various TV programmes, including Callejeros and España Directo, showing off some of Marbella’s most beautiful homes. There was a lot going on at the end of the month, including the British Chamber of Commerce’s London Season Garden Party, a fashion show at Bono’s Beach, a tribute to Antonio Montiel, “El Pintor”, the annual Dutch herring party and a businesswomen’s lunch organised by Revista Mujer. But I’ll have more about that next issue. In the meantime, the World Cup continues to take centre stage this month and, as an adopted Spaniard, I will be hoping “La Roja” can go all the way this time. But whatever your team: good luck!

JAGUAR XJ

ON THE ROAD

Breaking the mould

Brave new world

MOTORING AUTHOR, RACING DRIVER AND PHOTO-JOURNALIST IAN KUAH EXPERIENCES SOMETHING OF A CULTURE SHOCK AS HE SETS OFF ON A JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY IN FRANCE

My first sight of the new Jaguar XJ in the real world came when one of their company chauffeurs picked me up at Paris’ Charles de Gaulle airport. Against the sea of normal cars, the futuristic looking XJ stood out like a concept car that had escaped from a motor show. Even while staring at it myself, I could not help but notice the attention this uniquely styled Jaguar garnered from fashion-conscious Parisians. The high level of interest continued as we made our way down the autoroute towards Versailles, and only intensified as we became immersed in slower traffic. As the kilometres passed in the back seat, I had the chance to take stock of my unfamiliar surroundings. First contact with this radically different Jaguar is nothing short of a culture shock. Old reference points and expectations are thrown out of the window as your brain struggles to come to terms with the new XJ’s ultra modern exterior design. The interior is just as refreshing for its confident new style. Where rivals are still producing more of the same, Jaguar’s design chief, Ian Callum, and his team have taken the bold step of creating a whole new interior 52

design language for this car. The result has a terrific appeal to anyone terminally bored with the German status quo. A great design feature is the wrap around forward cabin architecture that visually ties the door cappings and dashboard top together in one sweeping arc in front of you like the windscreen of a classic Riva motorboat. Rather than being used as an inlay in the traditional way, the choice of carbon-fibre, piano black or zebrano wood is used to

ON THE ROAD

emphasise this design feature. The chosen material also features far more prominently on the doors, looking more a part of their structure rather than a token embellishment. Thanks to the standard dark tinted and heat insulated glass roof with its twin apertures, the cabin is light and airy in all weathers. At eye level, both the cabin architecture and its attention to detail are quite delightful, and discovering and admiring both the major and minor elements here is a delightful journey in itself.

make much capital of the fact that their new car is so distinctive it does not require any Jaguar badges on the outside. The Jaguar symbol on the deeply set mesh grille and the “leaper” on the boot-lid are the only clues to the car’s origins, and that works just fine. However, in a contradiction of this ideology, there are black and silver plastic “Jaguar” name badges in the cabin. One sits in the centre of the wrap around trim strip below the windscreen, and there is another on each rear door. These badges are wholly unnecessary and only serve to cheapen the interior. Equally objectionable to the church of aesthetic purity are the Bowers & Wilkins badges on the wood or carbon fibre door trim panels. They look like an afterthought, and should be both smaller and placed on the speaker grilles. Beyond those easily fixed minor gripes, the interior design is a master class in how to

54

www.societylivingmagazine.com

“It stood out like a concept car that had escaped from a motor show” break the traditional mould with a modern yet ergonomically excellent design. It is also notable for the seamless meld of traditional analogue instrument design with digital technologies. The 12.3-inch virtual instrument panel is the prime example of this, with analogue dials generated against a black background. At the flick of a switch, you can access different sets of information on this screen. The 8.0-inch dual-view widescreen in the centre console allows the passenger to watch a DVD while the driver sees the navigation screen or other information on the hard-drivebased infotainment system. Music lovers will be pleased with the Bowers & Wilkins audio systems. Three alternative levels offer increasing power and quality, culminating in a 1,200 watt, 15-channel, 20-speaker high resolution system with impressive dynamic range.

The radical new look throws your perceptions of Jaguar so far out of gear that you do not know what to expect from the driving experience. Part of the old Jaguar XJ ethos was a cosseting ride unmatched by any car this side of a Rolls-Royce. Going back a generation, the non-Sport versions could be downright floaty to the point of seasickness. While the XJ 2.7 diesel I tested in 2005 struck a pleasing balance between supreme comfort and taut handling, the long wheelbase Sovereign I drove immediately afterwards reminded me of a 1970s Cadillac. It was so under-damped that body heave and float were motion sickness inducing. This car proved that “soft” and “comfortable” can be mutually exclusive. As with its styling, the new XJ takes Jaguar off in a different direction with its chassis dynamics, which are best described as Germanic with a dash of Jaguar suppleness thrown in.

ON THE ROAD “The radical new look throws your perceptions of Jaguar so far out of gear that you do not know what to expect from the driving experience”

Enjoying the generous amount of leg and headroom in the back of the 134-millimetre longer LWB XJ 3.0 diesel that picked me up at the airport, I carefully monitored ride quality on the way to the chateau where I would pick up my test car. From the back seat, the air suspension’s low speed secondary ride feels tauter than any XJ that has gone before. In this respect it is very much like the latest BMW 7-Series, and that means supple, but revealing of short, sharp bumps that would have barely registered on the old XJ. This is a corollary of the 20-inch wheels and tyres, which incidentally look great on a car of this size. The counterpoint is much better body control, with no sign of the dreaded float and body heave over long wave undulations that plagued some of the older XJ models. As you pick up speed, the ride smoothens out, and soon reverts to that gliding along feeling that Jaguar does so well. Beyond that, the XJ clearly exhibits the same finely honed purpose to the way it moves down the road I first experienced in the XF. It is clear that the new mindset and technologies that arrived with the midsized Jaguar two years ago set the tone for things to come. The XJ takes the traditional Jaguar blend of comfort to a new level with superb suspension control, and seats well-shaped for long distance travel. Just as Jaguar has 56

www.societylivingmagazine.com

reinvented its aesthetics for the 21st century, so has it also subtly changed the way its cars ride and handle. We only had the 275hp 3.0D V6 and 510hp supercharged 5.0 litre V8 in Supersport form on the launch, but the 385hp normally aspirated V8 and 470hp supercharged V8 will also be available by the time the XJ reaches the showrooms this summer. I drove the diesel first. Likely to be the most popular model in Europe, it is also the lightest XJ model. From the outside, the muted clatter of the twin-sequential-turbo V6 oil burner is

slightly incongruous with the XJ’s futuristic looks. From behind the wheel, though, the superb cabin insulation filters out the majority of this smooth turbocharged diesel’s soundtrack. Certainly at cruise, there is no hint that this is a diesel. The good throttle response and massive torque of this motor only serve to underline once again just how good a modern V6 turbo diesel is. With 275hp and 600Nm of torque, 0100km/h comes up in a hot hatch beating 6.4 seconds, and top speed is also electronically limited to 250km/h.

ON THE ROAD “The XJ takes the traditional Jaguar blend of comfort to a new level with superb suspension control” Even more impressive is the 40.1mpg (7.0L/100km) average fuel consumption of the SWB version and its 184g/km CO2 emissions. The 0.29 Cd of all the XJ models helps here. Low mass and a very well-honed chassis make the XJ handle in a way that belies its physical size. The lower roll angles of the latest air suspension and good steering feedback bolster your confidence on a twisty road where the XJ shows its willingness to change direction like a much smaller car. It is a wide car, but it soon shrinks around you. After a few kilometres, you are driving confidently without thinking about its width anymore. Stable and progressive when pushed on a twisty road, the XJ can be driven sportingly beyond the level you would normally expect of a luxury limousine. This is a car that can please both driver and passengers in alternative roles as a fast sporting saloon or smooth-riding limo. With 510bhp at 6,000rpm and 625Nm of torque from 2,500 to 5,500rpm, the supercharged Supersport V8 is a real weapons grade power unit, but it is also a paradigm of smoothness. Its torque characteristics give it the juice to waft the big XJ along on a whiff of throttle. However, when you either drop a gear or two with the standard paddle shifts or simply kick down, its ability to instantly launch the car towards the horizon at an initially insane rate is hugely impressive. The six-speed ZF automatic has been programmed to give a slight kick in full throttle upshifts in Sport mode to enhance this experience. But, in normal mode, it plays the deft chauffeur and keeps everything silky smooth. With its 4.9 sec 0-100km/h sprinting ability and electronically limited 250km/h top speed, the XJ Supersport is easily a match for its German rivals as an autobahn stormer. Thanks to its aluminium construction, low weight is a cornerstone of the XJ’s remit to the benefit of performance and fuel economy. The lightest variant is the V6 Diesel, which weighs just 1,796kg in SWB form, significantly less than its rivals. The heaviest XJ, the LWB supercharged V8, tips the scales at 1,915kg. The relatively low kerb weight translates into instant thrust when you open the throttle wide. Unlike a turbocharged motor, there is no hesitation here, no sense that the engine has to take a deep breath before it can blow hard. It just goes. And unlike in the XFR or XKR, where you want to hear the supercharger whine as part of their sportier remit, the same engine in the XJ just delivers a deep but distant V8 growl under full throttle. w w w. s o c i e t y l i v i n g m a g a z i n e . c o m

ON THE ROAD

“This is a car that can please both driver and passengers in alternative roles as a fast sporting saloon or smoothriding limo.”

One piece of kit the supercharged XJ has that its rivals do not is the very effective Active Differential Control. ADC was first seen on the XFR last year and can vary its locking torque from zero to 90 per cent side-to-side, optimising traction at each driven wheel without cutting power or using the brakes. Unlike a mechanical differential, which is a permanently active part of the drivetrain, ADC remains dormant until it is needed. Because of this, it does not create understeer in tight bends or any mechanical noises when manoeuvring at low speeds. It is particularly effective in the wet, allowing you to exit Tjunctions rapidly without wheelspin, and so is a positive contribution to safety. With firmer suspension settings and that clever ADC supporting you when you are really pressing on, the Supersport is a very capable sports saloon. It is as fast as any big car needs to be and its handling gives you the confidence to use the power too. Jaguar managed to pull off the hat-trick of balancing ride and handling in the mid-sized XFR, and they have almost managed the same thing with the larger XJ. While you can attack corners with gusto, there is something more than faintly ridiculous about driving a big luxury saloon like you have just robbed a bank. The new XJ is a complete sea change for Jaguar both in design terms and as an ownership experience. With this new flagship model in production, the renewal of the product line is complete and Jaguar now has three world-class cars to sell. Three models is not an extensive line up, but then Jaguar is a niche market manufacturer whose range of cars gives it a potentially broader customer base than Aston Martin or Bentley, but less so than Porsche. 58

www.societylivingmagazine.com

In past years, the conservative retro styling of Jaguar was an attraction, but eventually this wore thin. On the face of it, Jaguar’s new innovative styling may be hard for traditionalists to swallow. But this is not a big issue because, as Jaguar moves firmly into the 21st century, growth will come mainly through conquest sales from other manufacturers rather than traditional buyers. These new customers are people looking for something different from the norm, yet are not prepared to compromise on build quality and engineering excellence. STRIKING AND INNOVATIVE CONCEPTS TO GIVE YOUR FAVOURITE ROOM, OR CORNER OF THE HOME, A STUNNING AND ORIGINAL NEW LOOK

Relaxing in style We all want to be able to relax in the garden or by the pool and it isn’t always that comfortable on garden chairs or loungers, so these Fatboy products from Aquapool are perfect for both the garden and the beach. They are a funky design that both kids and adults will love, and come in a range of colours and styles so that you can match them to existing furniture that you already have in your garden. The materials used for the Fatboys are tough, durable and are rain, stain and UV-resistant, meaning you can use them year round. The “buggle up” bean bag has a special strap that enables you to take it from flat to a 60 degree sitting position; while the hammock can sit two people comfortably and enables you to swing away while forgetting all your troubles. Quality lighting AMC have been designing and manufacturing lamps and different types of lights since 1975 so they have a great deal of expertise when it comes to installing and choosing the correct lighting for you. design ideas Garden comfort Loft Design have a great range of outdoor furniture that is beautiful and looks fabulous in any garden or terrace area. The cool, sleek designs are available in a range of colours and work well matched or mixed with each other. We all like to entertain outdoors in the summer with barbecues or World Cup parties so this range is perfect for days or nights when you have guests – all of whom will be terribly envious of your garden furniture. For those who like to keep the outside quite simple the stunning Igloo design is great: the light colour against the dark wood really stands out and you can add a pop of colour on the cushions; while the Coconut design offers a great seating solution for when you inevitably run out of chairs. Loftdesign.es

Outdoor enjoyment Cape Reed is an international company that specialises in thatched gazebos and pergolas, enabling you to enjoy the outdoors in the summer without being in sun all day or sitting under the terrace where you may not be able to enjoy parts of outdoor life. They can create a great thatched gazebo to cover your barbecue area – no one wants to cook in the midday sun without some shade and the barbecue itself gives off enough heat so the gazebo provides welcome respite from the sun. You can also get a covered seating area by the pool, enabling you to relax in the shade or watch your children in the pool without having to sit in the sun. Or why not get your hot tub covered so you can enjoy it year round, even in winter when the hot tub is hot but it is cold outside. Capereed.com

Contemporary luxury ChillOut Beds have an amazing range of benches that have all been hand-carved in Bali and are perfect for the terrace area, allowing you to relax in the shade on these comfortable, luxurious beds. They are better suited to the terrace rather than the garden as the dark wood is affected by the sun and rain quicker than lighter wood. They make excellent benches or daybeds and are big enough for all the family, meaning you can chill out together and enjoy some quality time. Made from Benkirai pillars they are strong and heavy but equally as striking and contemporary, and there are four different designs available, ensuring you find exactly what you need to relax on your terrace. BO CONCEPT The importance of expert professional advice Deciding on how to redecorate your house, even if it is just one room, can be a hard task, especially if you aren’t really sure where to start. Getting the right colours and furniture can make all the difference and ensure you are left living in harmony. Thankfully there is help at

84

w w w. b e a u t i f u l h o m e m a g a z i n e . c o m

hand – Bo Concept have a great team who can help you with all your needs. They can even allow you to see the rooms you are redecorating before you have started. The team want to make your home the best it can be, so they advise on decorating and plan the rooms to make life easier for you. They come

to your home to see the room before the decorating work starts – seeing where you live, how you live and the style in which you live enables them to gain a better picture and understanding about what it is you really want. Everybody is different and what may work for one person doesn’t necessarily work for somebody else. The concept really is to customise the room and everything in it to the individual’s taste and requirements. While at your home, the team take measurements of everything that is needed. Their expertise ensures all the little details are taken into account, ones that may be overlooked without professional help. The measurements are taken back to the showroom in Mijas, where they are inputted into a state-of-the-art computer program which shows the client a basic floor plan of the room in their house. Items are then placed into the room to show how it will look, so both the team and the client can choose furniture and colours and fit everything exactly into the home – making sure the balance looks right, without actually having to do anything to the room. The computer program shows a 3D version, allowing the client to see the room from all angles and how it will look colour-wise and providing them with a feeling of security: if they don’t like something, it can be changed, and they will not have to buy anything until they are sure. Everything in the room can be changed, from the wood to the upholstery and modules including colours and textures, meaning the house you end up with really is exactly the way you want it. Thanks to the team’s expert advice and the computer program, you can preview the finished product, and have an accurate idea of the price as, when things are added or taken away from the room, the program immediately re-prices the work.

The showroom also allows clients to view different types of furniture and obtain ideas about items for their home – they can physically sit in chairs and determine if the comfort and style is what they had in mind. Bo Concept also have design furniture packages called “Affordable Luxury” where they can kit out your whole apartment with quality furniture for a better price. A one-bedroom apartment is €4,444; a two-bedroom apartment, €5,555; and a luxury package one-bedroom apartment, €6,666. Bo Concept Mijas Tel. 951 242 092 boconcept.es

They are hand-painted, which adds to the character and charm, and are sure to have guests talking about them. Strawberryfool.com

Thwarting those pesky wasps Wasps in summer when you are trying to eat outside are the bane of every diner’s life, so these ceramic wasp catchers are ideal for dining outdoors. objects of desire Setting the style Trying to match your tableware when dining outside is hard. When throwing a party or inviting friends over for a barbecue we always seem to run out of plates that match, so these French-style bowls, plates, jugs and mugs are a great option. As they are available in a range of pastel colours you can mix and match to create a colourful, trendy table setting. Jasmineway.co.uk

Sleek service Let’s face it, we never want to take a glass bowl outside. Smashing it is almost inevitable, and it really is not a good idea around children or adults who may have had a tipple or two, so this sleek, contemporary salad bowl is ideal for summer barbecues. It is available in black, lime green or white so you can find one to match your other tableware. Bethstevens.co.uk

Chic lighting These stunning contemporary slate oil lamps are fabulous for the terrace area; chic and modern they will lighten up evenings round the table outdoors. Nordichouse.co.uk

Romantic flame Hand-made using recycled glass, this sparkling silver T-light holder is perfect for a summer’s evening when you want some gentle lighting to capture the romantic mood. Lilyandlime.co.uk 90

Spruce up your whole house… over the weekend! WORDS JESSICA WHITE

Have you walked round your house recently, especially after the weather this winter, and thought “Oh dear”. Walls might need repainting, the garden new plants and the whole house just an all-over lift. But where do you start? And, if you haven’t got the money to do the whole house, which rooms do you choose? Well, there is a solution. Rather than repainting and decorating the whole house inside and out – which can cost time and money – choose certain areas in each room that need love and make your house look entirely different over just one weekend. Then the following weekend you can invite people round for a barbecue and not feel embarrassed about your home.

Kitchen We use our kitchens every day – breakfast, a quick bite for lunch and a sit-down meal in the evenings are all prepared in this one room, so we inevitably spend a lot of time there. The “hub 94

w w w. b e a u t i f u l h o m e m a g a z i n e . c o m

of the house” may have children at the table after school doing homework or friends who pop round for a coffee in the morning, so the room needs to be looked after. Repainting the cupboard doors is a great way to change the atmosphere of the room – if they were white before, repaint them a different colour such as light blue to add texture and flair. Little things also make a difference – just by removing one cupboard door you have created a display cabinet, enabling you to put the best china or ornaments for the kitchen on display. Changing old blinds or curtains in the kitchen can help drastically – the old ones probably smell or are stained, so by replacing them with new ones you are giving the windows a facelift. Lastly, clearing out cupboards or drawers and throwing out things you never need or use will enable you to put away all the clutter that takes up space on the work surfaces.

They say the kitchen is traditionally the room that sells the house so, if yours is the reason you bought your home, give it some love and think of how a prospective buyer would want to see it.

Living Room The living room is the room we entertain in all year; it’s the room guests gravitate to as the allure for comfy sofas proves too much. So you want the room to look good and be organised. Simply by changing a few things you can create a new haven for you and your guests. If you think your sofa may have had its day – think again. Just by re-covering it you can give it a new lease of life and also change the colour/pattern/design. (Some of us are given old sofas from well-wishing parents/grandparents or other family members which are perhaps not to our taste, but this an easy way to remedy that without breaking the budget or hurting their feelings.) Alternatively, if your sofa is relatively new some cushions in different colours add that something extra you thought the room was missing. When it comes to the rest of the room – decluttering is always the best place to start (my partner is forever asking me to put away all the magazines I buy). Invest in some good shelving or a chest of drawers that can hide all the things that shouldn’t be on show – this will also be a great place to put photos or plants (two other things my partner says are everywhere in our house; well, memories are good and plants are good for the environment, so I’m doing my bit). And don’t forget: a good lamp or even just a change of lampshade alters the light in the room and will have people asking if the whole room has been redecorated.

Dining Room I would say the dining room is the least used room in the house; many people now have tables in their kitchens and eat most meals there, so this is the room that always gets left behind in the decorating stakes. The easiest way to spruce up this room is to simply paint one wall a different colour to the others; it makes a focal wall and you can use the colour with accessories to accentuate it in other areas of the room. Use a bold colour like deep or bright red, which stands out and is easily reciprocated in other parts of the room – for example, a runner down the middle of the table breaks the solid colour. You can match napkins, candles and table ornaments to the colours or choose an opposing colour like green to create harmony. w w w. b e a u t i f u l h o m e m a g a z i n e . c o m

95

trend españa If you want to splash out a little in this room a nice way to keep it looking like it has jumped straight out of a magazine is to invest in a gorgeous dining set and have the table laid even when you aren’t using it. Harsh lighting can sometimes be the last thing you want when hosting a dinner party so scatter candles around the room, with large ones on the table – enabling you to turn off the main lights and create a romantic atmosphere. Finally, if you decide to buy a new table and chairs for your spruce-up, always remember to sit in the chairs before you buy them – you want people remembering your dinner parties for your food, not for the sore bottom they had when they left!

Bedroom A calming place you can retreat to when the world is just too much to contend with… a boudoir… or simply a place you go to sleep – your bedroom should be somewhere you enjoy being, spacious even if it’s a small room and comforting. Bed covers are the obvious thing to use to spruce up this room but think outside the box a little – when buying bed linen also buy a few scatter cushions, which look pretty when you aren’t in bed, and some big square ones, which prop you up when you are. Gentlemen take note: women will always want and have a lot of jewellery; this need not be the bane of your life in the bedroom. Buy her some handy stands that hold necklaces, bracelets or rings and not only will she be very grateful but the jewellery will stay neatly put away on her dressing table, not on every available flat surface in the room. We never have enough cupboard/wardrobe space (not unless we’re Carrie Bradshaw and our beloved has built us one) so it’s a good idea to get some clear or white boxes that you can store under the bed – thus enabling you to put winter clothes there in the summer or simply extra items that never had their own space. If the room is small, get some good-sized mirrors and place them strategically around the room; the light will bounce off them and give the illusion of more space. Also, remember never to paint a small room a dark colour – it may look romantic but, trust me, its never a good idea.

Bathroom Just as the dining room doesn’t get much love, the bathroom is also often seen as a room used for necessity only and not in need of care and attention. However, this is so wrong. A fresh lick of paint to walls that have seen years of water splattered on them gives the room an instant uplift; while fresh towels and a new shower curtain ensure cleanliness and change the whole look to the room. It is also the little things that make a difference in the bathroom – having products stored away, a wicker box with goodies in for guests or a plant can make the room much more interesting. To add to the new feel, toothbrush holders and soap dishes as well as new toothbrushes also make the room feel new. Giving your house the love and attention it needs does not have to take too long or cost you too much money, if any. With a bit of hard work the home you share with family and friends can feel completely new. Just remember: be creative! 96

The Rising Star Lisa Stickley’s style is a modern twist on traditional values, which has attracted fans such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Brangelina and Kirsten Dunst. Here she talks exclusively to Nicola McGeorge about being commissioned for Burberry, taking on Japan and her campaign to make sewing fashionable again.

How did you begin your career? After studying at Central Saint Martins and the Royal College, I was very lucky to do receive my first commission from Burberry and also started selling items to Paul Smith and Harrods. It has steadily grown from there. How did you find and develop your current style? I developed my final collection at the RCA around the “English tearoom”. These old English traditional values have become the root of my style. My work is an evolutionary story and along the way it has been developed and expanded to include themes such as playing cricket in summer meadows, a dog walking in the countryside and glamorous ladies from the ‘40s and ‘50s. What is your signature style? Lisa Stickley London embodies all that is quintessentially British but adds a quirky modern twist to each item, making it look fresh and current in the world today. What inspires you? The 1940s and ‘50s form my core inspiration, combined with experiences of the English dayto-day way of life. I collect like a magpie and inspiration can come from many different places, from objects I find to a quote from a book. What does home mean to you? Home to me is a place to relax away from the rest of the world. My familiar, comfortable,

eclectic and welcoming space where I can listen to the radio, bake things, read, spend time with my man friend, sit in a lovely chair and have my friends and family round for supper. Any home hates? Cleaning sash windows three floors up! Your style secrets… I like to keep things (eclectically) minimal with a touch of a quirk and a sophisticated twist… with a splash of colour here, and something unexpected there. What looks did you go for in your own home and what colours and textures have you used? My home is an extension of my personality. I have collected an array of objects along the way, many found in antique markets and junk shops. In every room of my home there is also a splattering of my own creations, homemade and items from the shop downstairs. I didn’t consciously choose a “look” for my home; it has evolved gradually, and the colours and textures vary hugely from the fluro pink of a Lisa Stickley cushion on my armchair to the shiny finish of my black baumatic fridge (a treasured edition to my interior!). Do you have any work inspired by or related to your family? How would you describe your concept and creating process for that work? Family and friends are a great support to me and many of my bags are named after certain people. My dad is a big inspiration too; he has

many, many quotes, sayings and random poems, which always make me laugh, and I have even commissioned him before! What’s in the pipeline? We have lots going on at Lisa Stickley HQ, including hunting for a new flagship store, which is very exciting indeed. I have just written my first book, Made at Home, which launches in July. So for next year who knows… maybe a book number two! We have just launched a collection for Tate and I am looking forward to the launch of my diffusion range, House and Home, for Debenhams in the autumn. With a wonderful liberty collection, a new stationary range, Lisa Stickley in Japan, and some inspired new prints in the pipeline the future is looking bright… watch this space! How can we steal your style? My new book is a step-by-step guide to help you create items that have the Lisa Stickley essence, like the ones that I have decorating my home, but if you really want some authentic ‘40s and ‘50s objects I would suggest rummaging in some junk shops to dig out some diamonds in the rough. How do you display your favourite objects? I love pieces dotted around my home and am constantly changing things around on my shelves, fireplace and bookcases. I like to see how different items look next to unusual colours and textures and placing things next to something unexpected. w w w. b e a u t i f u l h o m e m a g a z i n e . c o m

designer in focus Recently, which work or work in progress has made you really satisfied? Completing my book was a huge landmark moment. Thumbing through the pages and inhaling that fresh off the press scent caused me to become a little overwhelmed. It was a wonderful project to be asked to do and, although it did take many a late night to complete, it was absolutely worth it, and hopefully it will encourage people to get sewing again! Could you talk about your most popular product? What’s your opinion on this work? Our Valerie make-up bags are our most popular shape and they do tend to fly off the shelves. They are perfectly sized to fit all your day-to-day make up must-haves and they are small enough not to weigh down your handbag. The mushroom hankie flower is one of our favourite prints; it is a timeless classic and goes splendidly with any accessories. This season the vibrant mustard hankie flower has been very popular too, adding a splash of confident colour to your cosmetic collection. Tell us about your celebrity clients… and whom would you like to design for and why? Kirsten Dunst is our favourite A-list client and she embodies so much of the Lisa Stickley brand. She is a young, confident lady with a quirky, chic, individual style. I would absolutely love to design a bag for both Audrey Tautou and Penelope Cruz as they are huge idols of mine and are always so effortlessly elegant. Tell us about your new book… My new book, Made at Home: a simple guide to sewing, is launched on 1 July. It features lots of easy-to-do projects, each with step-by-step instructions guiding you along the way. It covers everything from tea cosies to curtains and I have tried my very best to make the instructions clear and straightforward so hopefully it will give you the confidence and inspiration to have a sew. enabling you to mix and match and have a house that is totally unique rather than out of an Ikea catalogue.

Old is new again

Ever since Michelle Obama wore an Isabel Toledo yellow dress and matching coat to the Inauguration last year designers in both the fashion and interior world have been buzzing about the colour yellow. This year it is the hottest colour of the season, both in the wardrobe and on the wardrobe doors. Many might look at yellow as a garish, scary colour and one they would never invite into their home but it can be a beautiful summery colour that, even when winter draws near, will remind you of warmer times. The trick with yellow is to either be bold and embrace the colour wholly or use it as an accent colour to softer tones, even monochrome. If you are the bravest of the bunch then use a strong or soft yellow on the walls. Not every wall in the

Vintage is back – big time – and what better way to update your house than with some great antiques with a history behind them. Vintage pieces add soul and character to any room and are a great talking point when you have visitors. Nowadays getting hold of vintage pieces is much easier then people imagine. You don’t have to go to markets in the back of beyond or a thrift store to find the furniture you want: big retailers are manufacturing items that will fit perfectly into your home. Now, you may not want a house full of old furniture but spice things up a little – what’s the harm? There is no need for everything in your house to be vintage; and in fact vintage items can look great next to modern pieces,

house, just in one room, the kitchen, lounge or bathroom perhaps; and, if you prefer, as an accent wall with wallpaper instead of paint. If you are a bit more reserved or have a partner whose favourite colour doesn’t even come close to yellow, use it in your accessories such as cushions, curtains or even a stand-alone chair that will really make an impact in a room. Yellow is a fabulously bright colour that will make you smile when you enter the room and will keep you thinking of days on the beach in summer, when in fact you are curled up on the sofa watching the rain in winter.

Floral prints Now I know what many of you are going to say – as if my husband/boyfriend/partner will allow flower patterns to be scattered all over the house! Well, many of you may be right but if you start slowly and small you might be impressed at his reaction. Blooms and flower patterns needn’t and shouldn’t take over your whole house; they are simply there to add flair and to make your room look fabulous. Before you even think about buying anything with flower patterns on, take a good look at the room you want to add them to; you need to be able to balance out the flowers with another strong colour so, if you are choosing pink flower patterns, it might be a good idea to paint a wall in the room a grey colour (not only do grey and pink work wonderfully together but grey is another trend this year). Or you could choose the cushions/curtains or sofa (if you are going bigger with the flower print) and use the background colour as wall colour. There are so many colours and designs out there you just need to make sure you pick the right one for you and your home. And remember: do not go overboard…nobody wants to walk into a room that has floral wallpaper, sofas, cushions and curtains!

Natural materials This summer natural materials are in – wood, stone and metals will play a big part in items of furniture and accessories you buy. It’s not just about going green, which is obviously important, but this summer natural materials can take you back to the beginning when tables made of wood had little imperfections and coffee tables made of stone lasted ages. The natural materials add character and are always different from the traditional items you see in many homes. A piece of solid wood furniture with a natural grain is always going to be different to any other w w w. b e a u t i f u l h o m e m a g a z i n e . c o m

because of the grain and it makes a statement in any room; while stone products look so much better than glass or plastic. Metals can be brought in with statues or ornaments which create a focal point in a room, and allow you to add a little of yourself without making the room crowded with pictures or paintings.

Patio chic We always know that every summer we will spend many hours outdoors enjoying the sunshine and entertaining with friends, and this year is no different except that it is all about patio chic – especially when it comes to arranging your outdoor space. In winter you will inevitably host a dinner party, firstly in your living room with drinks for your guests and then moving to the dining room for the meal. In summer, however, the two areas get a little muddled and now is the time to sort that out. You need to define simple areas outside where you can enjoy a meal with friends at a table then retire to a seating area for drinks, or vice versa – by doing this it enables you to decorate the areas differently. When it comes to the table it’s a good idea to make sure the seats are comfortable, so invest in some extra cushions to keep your guests happy and make sure there is enough light so they can see what they are eating. A helpful hint is to buy some candles that repel insects so that while you eat you are not disturbed by wasps or mosquitoes. The seating area should look inviting – somewhere people will want to relax though not too comfortable so they will fall asleep! When you are entertaining you should always make sure you have enough chairs; to save some expense repaint an old wooden bench, which you can place along a wall and throw cushions on. And remember: even if you don’t have a patio, just grass, you can still design your garden area as you want to. When all is said and done, all you really need to do is inject a little personality into your home and achieve overall comfort, allowing you to live in the style you aspire to and prefer. 104

Holidays are all about feeling your best and, of course, looking your best. This means it’s time for the annual body blitz. If you prep carefully – get waxed, detox and spray tanned – it is possible to stay groomed with only a few essentials. So stock up these beachside beauty holiday products and look fabulous.

CELLULITE SOS In line with the rest of their range, the Omorovicza Dimple Vanisher treatment uses products which combine special Hungarian thermal waters with cutting-edge scientific technology. Easily absorbed and silky, this product helps to reduce the appearance of dimples and reshape the figure. The key ingredients in this fragrant gel work together to enhance the fat-burning rate and improve microcirculation to remove fatty deposits. This is obviously a treatment to start before your holiday, but make sure you keep up your routine while you are away. omorovicza.com 114

TOP NEW RANGES, TREATMENTS AND NEWS FROM THE WORLD OF MAKE-UP, SKIN CARE AND FRAGRANCE SPEED TANNING We live in a world where we want everything done immediately, so it’s no surprise that we all want to tan as quickly as possible. Good news is that The Organic Pharmacy Tan Accelerator does just that. You can develop a rich, deep tan faster with less sun exposure due to the Betacarotene and Kapi Kacchu extract. The plant extracts stimulate melanin production with a long-lasting, deep and natural tan. This light aloe-infused formula will bring an instant sun-kissed glow to face and body; while the active plant ingredients activate and increase melanin production. This means less time in the sun to develop a deep golden tan. theorganicpharmacy.com

TIME TO SCRUB UP Being rather sweatier than us ladies, men are more prone to blocked pores and blemishes on holiday. The high temperatures and daily use of sun cream only aggravate this problem. I highly recommend regularly exfoliating with The Body Shop’s Men Maca Root Face scrub. An easy rinsing product that helps to draw out impurities and remove dead skin cells, it is enriched with maca root from Peru and crushed rice particles to exfoliate and promote a healthy-looking glow. thebodyshop.com

NO MORE WHITE BITS If, like for me, certain body parts don’t tan as well as the rest (yes, I am a typical Brit, whose legs never change colour) then you may want to take some fake tan with you. My new favourite is Clarins Delicious Self Tanning Cream. Big plus points for the mousse texture and non-chemical smell. The caramel tint and touch of iridescent gold guides application and gives skin an instant golden glow. The deeper, longerlasting colour is provided by Clarins’ renowned self-tan technology, while Cocoa Butter and Cocoa Powder nourish and protect. The result…… beautiful skin and a gorgeous, natural-looking tan. clarins.com

NEON LIGHTS Bright nail colours always look fab against a tan and it doesn’t get much better than Mavala’s S/S 2010 range. Mavala take a step back in time with their new Swinging Collection, reminiscent of the 1960s. Six shocking neon shades include a combination of exciting, flamboyant colours that boldly stand out in the crowd. These radical shades move away from classic tones, providing a flash back to the good times. mavala.com

GO TO THE BEACH TAKING THE OUCH OUT OF SUNBURN So you fell asleep in the sun and have now turned a pretty shade of pink, or more like lobster red. Help is at hand. Carita Paris Repairing After-Sun Cream for the Face is an after-sun night cream to minimise harmful effects of sun exposure. It also gets double points for being a genuine repairing, anti-ageing treatment. It smoothes out wrinkles and prevents the skin from losing elasticity. So you can wake up to pain-free and younger looking skin. What more could you ask for? carita.com

If you can’t go au-natural to the beach then MAC Cosmetics can give you a helping hand. The seaside has a kind of golden, sexy alchemy we’re all drawn to. The To The Beach collection encapsulates it with the most soothing, sultry shades of summertime. The Tinted Lipglass line comes in a range of fruit punch shades; I am loving the seahorse motif screened onto the coral-coloured cap. Another favourite is the High-Light Powder. This super-fine, lightly pearlised shimmer flaunts a whimsical seahorse motif embossed into the powder. Stylishly presented in a marine-green compact with see-through window…… beach glamour has never looked this good. maccosmetics.com w w w. s o c i e t y l i v i n g m a g a z i n e . c o m

The

Method

TracyAnderson Tracy Anderson's unique training regime is the secret weapon behind the bodies of A-Listers Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth Paltrow, Shakira, Courtney Cox and Kate Hudson. This month she answers some of your most frequently asked questions. Women with children find it very hard to get time to exercise and when the children finally go to bed, they are usually too exhausted... what would be your advice? Women with children need to understand that, in order to care for their children, it is imperative that they find time to take care of themselves as well. Carving out time in your day and committing to a routine that allows you to exercise will benefit your children because you will feel so great about yourself! I created my DVD series to be a highly effective tool for anyone who doesn’t have the time to go to the gym. The DVDs will help you see results without taking too much time out of your day or taking you away from your children.

Can you give advice on how to stay motivated for healthy eating and exercise? The best way to stay motivated is to create a clear-cut plan that you can commit to and can fit into your schedule. You need to stay focused on your commitment and that is how you will achieve the desired outcomes.

Who would you like to train and why? I created the Tracy Anderson Method for everyone; the method is for anyone who has a problem area that they think they are destined to have for the rest of their life. I want to show any person, regardless of weight, size, etc., that they can achieve their desired results through my method.

If you are desperately needing a sugar fix what do you recommend? I do not recommend cheating your cravings. What I mean by this is, it is important to have whatever it is that you are craving, but in a reasonable portion. If you are craving a chocolate chip cookie from your favourite bakery, let yourself have that cookie. Do not go out and buy a 100 calorie snack pack of chocolate cookies because that will not help your craving go away. Giving into cravings will not negate all of the hard work you have put into the Tracy Anderson Method!

116

www.societylivingmagazine.com

Why do you recommend taking green juices? I am a huge fan of green juices because, any time you can get a large amount of nutrients in a consumable portion, you are doing much to support and promote your health. It’s important to remember to include ingredients that you are going to get the most benefits from; I recommend juicing together the following: kale (mostly), spinach, cucumber, Swiss chard, parsley, one apple and lemon. Have this first thing in the morning and within 15 minutes of juicing.

A Marbella success story Leading plastic surgeon Dr. Alexander Aslani is now offering his extensive expertise and state-of-the-art treatments at surgeries in Marbella and Málaga

T

he plastic and cosmetic surgery scene in Marbella has traditionally always been a vibrant one, with some turbulent times in recent years. Now, plastic surgery in Marbella has received a very special recognition: Dr. Alexander Aslani was appointed as head of the department of plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgery of Hospital Quiron in Málaga last November. Dr. Aslani is one of Marbella’s bestknown plastic surgeons, with his private practice, Cirumed Clinic, located right in Marbella centre. Hospital Quiron is Spain’s largest private hospital, with leading centres across Spain, some of which have already received recognition as university teaching centres.

What does the department focus on? Our main focus is reconstructive surgery of the female breast after cancer. There is an enormous demand for such surgery; currently only one out of 10 women who lose their breasts because of cancer have a reconstruction. In all honesty, I don’t know why the number is so low. Losing a breast is a very traumatic incidence for every woman affected, and satisfaction rates after a reconstruction are very high. We offer breast reconstruction with the patient’s own tissue, normally from the abdomen or the buttocks, as a microsurgical tissue transfer. As director of plastic and reconstructive surgery, Dr. Aslani had been travelling between the UK and Marbella in recent years. We spoke to him about the new challenge, which without a doubt is also an achievement for Marbella as a place of quality medicine. Congratulations… we understand you must be very happy about your appointment as director of plastic surgery at Quiron Malaga… Happy and honoured. Competition for this position was very challenging indeed, comprising some of Spain’s top plastic surgeons. Has the work as director of the new department met your expectations so far? In many ways, they have been exceeded. Quiron has made enormous investments, especially into the plastic surgery department, giving us complete gearing for a full reconstructive microsurgery service. The working preconditions for me and my team are fantastic, to say the least.

118

www.societylivingmagazine.com

We hear that you have taken another well-known surgeon from Marbella with you… Dr. Manuel Ortiz has been senior consultant of the department from the first hour. It would be impossible without him. Dr. Ortiz is a reconstructive head and neck surgeon with an enormous experience in microsurgical reconstruction, and has worked in the United States. He has been head of the head and neck surgery unit of the university hospital Rosario in Argentina for many years. Surgeons of his calibre do not grow on trees. I am very happy to have Dr. Ortiz with me. We furthermore have two resident surgeons and a wound care specialist in the team. What has changed at Cirumed Clinic? A lot. We have expanded the facilities. With Dr. Ramin Pakzad, we have been able to recruit one of Marbella’s top gynecologists for the clinic. Dr. Pakzad has introduced the 4D breast ultrasound, which is a great asset for breast screening. We have also expanded to have more room for aesthetic treatments.

Dr. Aslani, thank you and all the best for your department in Málaga and your practice in Marbella. We have heard that you also have laser liposuction… Yes, we do. It is a great solution for many patients; however, there are some restrictions for others. But for the right indication laser liposuction can yield fantastic results with little surgical distress; it always depends on the amount of fat a patient wants removed.

Where do you see the next revolution in cosmetic surgery? In cosmetic surgery revolutions come and go. Not all are meant to stay. If I was asked, where do I see the greatest potential, in the near future it would likely be fat transplantation. Recent refined techniques have made results much more predictable and longer lasting than in the past.

Have you had plastic surgery on yourself yet? Not yet, but now you mention it… never say never. Where is life better: in Marbella or in Málaga? This question impossible to answer – two great and magic places. Although they are in close proximity, they could hardly be more different. I think a combination of the two is the perfect solution……

The technique is designed to bring the body back into structural and electrical alignment. Often many types of spinal problems and spine misalignments are caused by toxins that lie dormant within the spine so the use of essential oils helps to dispose of these viruses within the spine, helping its structure return to normal and also increasing energy levels within the body. It can be used to help treat those areas where diet and exercise has failed to remove stubborn excess fat pockets that can linger, such as upper arms, stomach, bottom, thighs and even man boobs! Ultrasonic liposuction (in the same way as liposuction) is not designed to reduce your weight, but re-sculpt your figure into a more desirable shape, losing up to two dress sizes in some cases. ucked away like a hidden gem in the heart of Marbella lies Casanis, a pretty, quaint bistro that serves delicious cuisine and has a great ambience. With diners coming back year after year, the food really speaks for itself; while the restaurant draws people in with the friendly helpful staff and a wonderful décor, both inside and out. While we sat outside the restaurant, people meandering the streets would stop and comment on the flowers and plants that cascade down the building like something out of a fairytale – taking pictures as mementos and to show friends the gorgeous restaurant they had found. The restaurant is well known to residents on the Coast as somewhere they can stop and grab a quick bite or relax and spend hours unwinding after a long day savouring the sumptuous dishes. Owner Guy has also opened a food shop and wine shop opposite, which serves as the restaurant’s wine cellar, allowing guests to take

home a slice of their favourite restaurant with the conserves, oils and other ingredients used in some of the dishes. The prices in the shops are extremely reasonable, with wine costing €12 less than on the restaurant menu. The most important thing for Guy is his staff – not only are they like a family but he also sends them on training every few months to his friends’ restaurants around the world (head chef Fibian Cangas was in the Caribbean training when we visited). We were lucky to be able to sample some of the dishes on the menu that are simple yet expertly cooked, with fresh produce bought daily from the market. Our starters were Vietnamese nems with mint, coriander and nuoc nam, a dipping sauce (which were also being enjoyed by many other diners at the tables around us, a sure sign the dish is delicious); and foie gras with a fig jam and homemade bread served with a dish of Kenyan green beans with baby tomatoes and vinaigrette – Guy always recommends the two

together and describes them as a “mardi gras in the mouth”. We also enjoyed a salad of panfried large prawns with artichoke hearts, white mushrooms served over green leaves and balsamic vinegar. The main courses consisted of turbot with hollandaise sauce, green beans and potatoes; sea bass in a white butter sauce with sautéed potatoes and vegetables; leg of lamb with pesto dressing and crispy potatoes with a form of melted parmesan; and steak tartar served with 15 different condiments, chips and a salad. Guy and his staff understand and respect every aspect of the restaurant – from the sumptuous dishes to the ambience created, and the feeling people have as they leave. You can be a regular visitor or it may be your first visit but you are always made to feel so welcome. I think is emphasised the most when Guy tells me the restaurant is for everybody, not just himself, but for his staff and for giving customers an authentic dining experience.

SMALL WORLD

Cool, contemporary and relaxed WORDS JESSICA WHITE PHOTOS DAVID TOMS

O

pened two years ago Small World is the ideal place to enjoy a lazy breakfast, quick bite at lunch or sumptuous dinner with friends and family. It began with four friends, Leandro, John, Victur and Alistair, who wanted to open somewhere that was fun, relaxed and had good food and a great atmosphere, and they have recently been joined by Kamil, a new partner. The boys all have varied backgrounds, growing up in Spain but relocating elsewhere to pursue their dreams – places such as five-star hotels and restaurants in New York and London. It is located in Centro Commercial Le Village, minutes from the Les Roches school of hospitality, where three of the guys studied, and the idea was to open somewhere they would like to hang out in – a cool, contemporary café that serves unpretentious, delicious dishes at reasonable prices. The restaurant/café is welcoming and every customer, whether they are there to enjoy cocktails, dinner or just a quick coffee with friends, feels a part of the relaxed ambience that they have created with the help of friendly and approachable staff.

I Small World Open weekdays 9am to 2am; weekends 12pm to close Tel. 952 771 046 smallworldcafe.com Tribeca Open till 6-7am on weekends; happy hour until 1am Tel. 657 277 713 130

www.societylivingmagazine.com

The interior has an urban vibe and the “Small World Boys”, as they are known to many on the Coast, did practically all the decorating themselves, down to laying the floor and painting the brickwork inside so that it coordinated with and matched the other colours in the café. You can tell just by talking to them about Small World that the boys are passionate about it and want to make it the best it can be – especially when it comes to the food and the value for money. Luckily, on our visit we were able to taste some of the excellent dishes from the simple yet creative menu that was designed both by the boys and by head chef Nico Tisone, who has worked with a Michelin-starred chef. Rather than stick to one dish each we decided to share so that we could have a taste of many dishes – these included the Small World salad of crumbled goat’s cheese, apricots and caramelised walnuts over mixes leaves, avocado, tomato and bean sprouts; roasted Cajun pumpkin tower with pan-fried goat’s cheese, sautéed spinach and a poached egg served with a sun-dried tomato pesto and balsamic glacée; fresh buffalo mozzarella, black olive, rocket, red onion and sun-dried tomato pizza; grilled Argentinean solomillo with caper butter, baked baby potatoes and a rocket

salad; and seared tuna steak marinated in wasabi and soy sauce, encrusted with sesame seeds and served with baked baby potatoes and green leaves. The tuna steak really deserves a special mention as it was absolutely delicious and literally melted in the mouth – it is fresh from Tarifa so, if they don’t have it when you visit the restaurant, blame the fishermen of Tarifa, not the chef. After the success of the last two years with Small World, the boys decided on another venture and have recently opened bar and nightclub Tribeca, located a few doors along from Small World. The club has been designed in the same urban feel and plays excellent music you can dance the night away to until the not so early hours of 7am, when the club closes. With music rotated nightly – Wednesday is alternative; Thursday is hip hop/R&B; and Friday and Saturday are funky house – guests will always find something to boogie to. Drinks are also value for money in the club, which has just been named the Grey Goose Embassy, one of only two in Andalucíía. Being next door to Small World also means that you can grab a relaxed, sumptuous meal and drinks before heading to the club for either a few late night drinks or all night boogie.

here are those couples who work together and those who share a passion, but for James Ghigi and Eugenia Pino Palma these two things are one and the same, for music is their shared passion and their career. As the creative spirits behind Pino Palma Productions they bring their musical and organisational abilities together to promote the very best musical talent available on the coast. Musical agents Eugenia and James have the top classical, jazz and pop/rock musicians in this region on their books, enabling them to offer a broad repertoire of musical events not just within Marbella but also across and beyond Spain. “We founded Pino Palma Productions several years ago,” says Eugenia. “Having been in the music business for many years and with the experience of working with top professionals we felt that something was missing on the Coast. “There was no organisation to coordinate musicians,” says James, “so talented artists found it hard to get work whilst people wanting quality musicians struggled to find them.” Realising how wasteful this situation was, they set up their music production company to select the cream of the crop and subsequently promote and manage them on a professional basis. “We applied the high standards we had been used to in places like Madrid and London when selecting people, ensuring that with us our clients get the best artists.” In practice it involves a great deal of coordinating, promotion and drawing on a local and an international network of contacts to get bookings that range from private parties, weddings and corporate launches to major cultural and musical events. “It’s great work and now we have formed a family of artists of high quality and talent,” says Eugenia.

The Costa Band Perhaps the most emblematic part of their repertoire is The Costa Band, which unites a handpicked collection of the most accomplished professional musicians on the Coast. The band has created quite a name for itself as being able to provide great party dance music and a repertoire of big swing hits from the Rat Pack to Michael Bublé. The band ranges in size from seven to 12, specialising in jazz, soul, Motown and pop. They adopted the motto “you name it we’ll play it”. “It gives me a thrill to play with these guys and I take great pride in the level of performance that the band achieves,” says James.

An intuitive team Within the company they play to their respective strengths. Eugenia is not a musician herself, but with her organisational skills forms the hub around which everything moves, and as a classically trained musician with an impressive CV James is one who can lead by example. He freelanced all over Europe and has performed with renowned conductors such as Simon Rattle, John Elliot Gardiner and Sir Neville Mariner and

A broad musical repertoire WORDS MICHEL CRUZ PHOTOS DAVID TOMS & JEREMY STANDLEY with orchestras such as The Amsterdam Baroque, The English Concert and London Philharmonic. He is a specialist baroque trumpet player who over the years has become skilled in a wide range of styles. Their respective skills, now so perfectly complemented by one another, have been honed after many years in the business. “When we met I was working for Ibermusica, a major agency in Madrid that brings orchestras such as The Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic and London Symphony to Spain; my English was poor, his Spanish non-existent.” For the Marbellaborn professional and the English artist of Italian extraction such hurdles were rapidly overcome as they fell in love during a brief spell spent on tour together. When James returned to England the two continued their relationship with eagerly awaited letters and phone calls. Eventually Eugenia moved to England and worked as a freelance orchestra manager for the London Philharmonic,

among others. “Our children were born there and grew up surrounded by musicians, rehearsals and performances,” recalls Eugenia. It was also for the children that they decided to move to Marbella, but this brought change for them too. “After 25 years playing classical music I felt that I needed a new challenge.” It came in the form of jazz, which has since rekindled his passion for music. “I have fallen in love with music – and in particular the trumpet – all over again. Everyone working within a creative field needs a driving force and a change can provide it.” Where the desire to learn jazz has given James renewed impetus, Eugenia is doing what she loves best: “Working with talented artists and coordinating performances is almost as good as being able to make music yourself.” For James and the other musicians that form part of Pino Palma Productions she is the conductor that harmonises their sound.
