A winter wonderland of festive cheer… en familia

O

ne of the many great aspects of living in Spain is that the festive season officially extends to 6 January. From early December, when plans are being made for Christmas feasts and New Year festivities, to the vibrant Three Kings parade… Spain is festooned with colour and immersed in a jovial party mood. With that in mind, and aware that we all need some cheery distraction after a complicated year, we decided to combine the last issue of 2009 and the first of 2010 in a seamlessly extended month that takes us through the traditional end-of-year revelry and spiritual reflection, on to the January sales, and into the warm embrace of another gloriously mild (hopefully!) winter on the Costa del Sol. This is also very much a time for families – of being able to spend more time with our loved ones, of sharing gifts, roast turkey and the trimmings – and, after his own somewhat turbulent year, Peter Andre has emerged as the consummate family man. As he notes in an exclusive interview for Society Living, his new single Unconditional is “a song for all parents and step-parents; it’s about the unconditional love that you have for your children”.

GLAMOUR DIGEST Nation’s sweetheart going solo Since becoming part of Girls Aloud in 2002 Cheryl Cole has had many highs and lows in the public eye but since joining the judging panel on The X Factor she has become a national sweetheart. We got a taste of her solo career when she was the featured artist on Will.I.Am’s single Heartbreaker last year and she has now released her first solo album, which went straight to number one. The album’s cover was shot by prestigious fashion photographer Nick Knight and features collaborations with Will.I.Am, Taio Cruz and other great talents. Girls want to be her and men want to date her, so this is possibly the best Christmas present for anyone this year.

The ultimate feminine perfume

Celebrities favour fantastic collections Stephen Webster’s collections are fast becoming the must-have accessories for celebrities and the general public alike. The lobster ring, a firm favourite of Kate Moss, comes from the Jewels Verne collection, which was inspired by French author Jules Verne’s famous book 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and the fantastical creatures in it. Comprising crabs and shrimps, among others, the collection is beautiful and unique. The dazzling Femme Fatale couture collection is also very popular. Drawing inspiration from the dangerous and seductive charms of the Hollywood greats, the collection of brilliantly crafted pieces uses the rarely seen unique WebCut™ diamonds supplied by Dali Diamond. Including rings, necklaces, earrings and bracelet, the highlight of the collection is the 3-D diamond pendant, featuring D-flawless WebCut™ 3.01 carat centre stone. www.stephenwebster.com; Puerto Banús Tel. 952 816 976

Smell like a superstar this Christmas with the Dolce and Gabbana fragrance Rose The One. The image of the perfume is embodied by their favourite feminine beauty icon, Scarlett Johansson, who is also the face of their new cosmetics line. The fragrance features notes of pink grapefruit, mandarin and cassis on the top with Bulgarian rose, peony, lily and lychee in the heart, and vanilla, musk and amber in the base. Stefano Gabbana says that roses are both his and Domenico Dolce’s favourite flowers and this is the first perfume that has been so explicitly linked to one flower before. Available in three sizes, 30ml, 50ml and 70ml, this eau de parfum is a great gift for someone special. Rose The One is available from Debenhams and at www.dolcegabbana.com

Top jewellery designer talks to Society Living about all his favourite things

Cherished memory… Family holidays at the seaside when I was a child… it’s where so much of my inspiration these days comes from.

years ago and he was more than 100 years old when he died. We’ve built a glass coffee table around him and he sits pride of place in the middle of our living room.

Must-have accessory… Anything from our new Jewels Verne collection.

Best night out… Dinner at Hix Soho followed by drinks at the Groucho club.

Favourite recipe… My wife is a great cook so I love a lot of her dishes: from spicy chicken stew with beans to grilled skate wing with new potatoes and spinach. I don't cook much myself but I love making tacos for my daughter – it's her favourite dish.

Most treasured place in the world… Our second home in Deal, Kent. We have wonderful sea views and a big back garden that I’ve started to get involved with (I haven't actually planted anything yet but I'm very good at pulling). And, even though it's only an hour and 45 minutes away from London, the pace changes so drastically that it forces you to relax with it, which is fantastic – unless you are trying to get something done...

Most precious artefact… A stuffed leather back turtle called Bolshoi. I’ve had him for 18 years; he was stuffed over 100 14

Best holiday I ever had… Sailing around the Thai islands on a yacht last year. Best present someone has ever given me… It’s tough to pick one out of so many but at a push I would say an aluminium sculpture my wife bought me. She researched this a lot; it was for our 10-year wedding anniversary, which is aluminium according to the old school. There are not many things to choose from in aluminium apart from a sports car, and I have one of those. Most inspirational person… Renee Lalique You may not know this but I’m great at... Running marathons! I’ve run six, with a personal best of two hours 47 minutes.

I Sherlock Holmes – 26 December (15 January in Spain) Director GUY RICHIE’s dynamic new portrayal of Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous character based on the forthcoming comic book created by LIONEL WIGRAM. Holmes (ROBERT DOWNEY, JR.) and his stalwart partner Watson (JUDE LAW) engage in a battle of wits and brawn with a new nemesis whose deadly plot could destroy all of England. Also stars RACHEL McADAMS, MARK STRONG, KELLY REILLY.

BIG SCREEN QUICK CLIPS Mamma Mia! star AMANDA SEYFRIED says that a sequel to the 2008 musical is in the pipeline and will include more tunes from ABBA; a production start date will be announced once the cast has been sorted out. The much in demand True Blood star ANNA PAQUIN has been drafted into the rom-com The Romantics where seven friends from college reunite for her wedding. KATIE HOLMES is her best friend and maid of honour, who also had a past with the groom (JOSH DUHAMEL). Also invited are ELIJAH WOOD, MALIN AKERMAN, ADAM BRODY and JEREMY STRONG. The Hangover’s ZACH GALIFIANAKIS is a busy boy at the moment; he will return for the sequel of the aforementioned film, as will BRADLEY COOPER, and they will both also feature in the comedy You Are Here where the latter will be romantically linked with JENNIFER ANNISTON. ZACH will then voice Humpty Dumpty in the Shrek spinoff Puss in Boots; this prequel follows the feline assassin before he met Shrek and ANTONIO BANDERAS will once again supply the vocals for the main character, with SALMA HAYEK as Kitty. An array of talent has been gathered to start filming the period drama The King’s Speech. HELENA BONHAM CARTER, GUY PEARCE, DEREK JACOBI, TIMOTHY SPALL, JENNIFER EHLE and MICHAEL GAMBON will support COLIN FIRTH and GEOFFREY RUSH in the story following the relationship between King George VI and speech therapist Lionel Logue, who helped the royal lose his stammer and embrace his leadership skills. The DC Comics studio is busy with Red, based on a three-book series published in 2003

and 2004 telling the story of a former blackops CIA agent (BRUCE WILLIS) now living a quiet life in retirement until a new CIA chief (MORGAN FREEMAN) contracts a high-tech assassin (BRIAN COX) to kill him. Also on set are HELEN MIRREN, RICHARD DREYFUSS, JOHN C. REILLY, ERNEST BORGNINE, JULIAN McMAHON and SARAH LOUISE PARKER, who romances Willis. Director KENNETH BRANAG starts work for rival comic studio Marvel in mid-January on Thor, who will be played by CHRIS HEMSWORTH with TOM HIDDLESTONE as his brother Loki and ANTHONY HOPKINS as their

father, the Norse god Odin. Thor is a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war and he is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, he learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth. Nick Fury (SAMUEL L. JACKSON), who first appeared after the credits in Iron Man, is back recruiting for The Avengers (a future film), a team of superheroes that includes Thor, Iron Man, The Hulk and Captain America. Also cast for Thor are JAIMIE ALEXANDER, COLM FEORE, and STELLAN SKARSGARD with the main love interest coming in the form of NATALIE PORTMAN. PORTMAN is currently filming the supernatural thriller Black Swan playing a veteran ballerina who finds herself locked in to a competitive showdown with a rival dancer (MILA KUNIS). Also starring are WINONA RYDER, VINCENT CASSEL and BARBARA HERSHEY. January will be a busy month for JANUARY JONES (America Pie & Love Actually) who is now a star on one of America’s top cable TV shows Mad Men. She will be finishing off The Hungry Rabbit Jumps as the wife of a man (NICOLAS CAGE) who hires a vigilante group to go after the men who committed a crime against her and gets in too far over his head with the group. Then she travels to Berlin for Unknown White Male. A man (LIAM NEESON) comes out of a coma to discover that someone has assumed his identity. Nobody seems to want to help him, including his wife (JONES). With the aid of a taxi driver (National Treasure’s DIANE KRUGER), he goes on a mission to prove his identity.

MOVIE OF THE MONTH

AVATAR The idea for this action adventure fantasy by director JAMES CAMERON first came to light 15 years ago, well before his 1997 blockbuster Titanic had even set sail, and has been four years in the making. It is the most expensive movie ever, costing well over $200 million, and has been shot in stereoscopic 3-D which has been reported as being the most sensational cinematic experience since colour replaced black and white. A 20-minute extract was shown at a comic convention in California during July and reviewers say they were left dreaming about it for days afterwards. A two-minute trailer was also shown on the web, and in the UK alone the clip had over 400,000 hits in the first 24 hours.

In the 22nd century, Jake (SAM WORTHINGTON), a former marine who was wounded and paralysed from the waist down during combat on Earth, is sent to Pandora, a small distant moon inhabited by the Na’vi (a three metre tall humanoid race with tails and sparkling blue skin) after being selected to participate in the Avatar program, which will enable him to walk again. Avatars are geneticallybred human-Na’vi hybrids that are controlled by a human “driver” through a technology that links the driver’s mind to the Avatar’s body as humans cannot breathe on Pandora. He is instructed to go into the forests in search of valuable minerals that a human marine-industrial unit can take back to Earth, after which they will then exterminate the whole Na’vi population.

Jake finds himself torn between two worlds, having fallen for Neytiri (ZOE SALDANA), a beautiful Na’vi princess. Will he join the locals and lead them against his own kind or will he return to help the superior marine invasion with his knowledge of Pandora? The 55-year old Oscar winning CAMERON said, “I’ve always wanted to make a movie that would blow people’s minds in the theatre” – and it looks like he’s gonna do just that. Also stars SIGOURNEY WEAVER, STEPHEN LANG, MICHELLE RODRIQUEZ, JOEL MOORE, CCH POUNDER.

Music notes GIGS, GROUPS, GOSSIP... MICKY REYNOLDS BRINGS US UP TO DATE WITH ROCK SNIPPETS FROM AROUND THE WORLD ALL’S LOOKING GOOD FOR LEONA Will LEONA LEWIS follow in the footsteps of CELINE DION with I See You, the closing credit tune from JAMES CAMERON’s revolutionary sci-fi blockbuster Avatar, which hits cinema screens worldwide on 18 December? The connection – same director and the same men, JAMES HORNER and SIMON FRANGLEN, who were behind the Canadian diva’s global hit My Heart Will Go On from the 1997 film Titanic and I See You – could launch the 2006 22

X Factor winner to the next level as the film is expected to smash box office records. At the time of going to press she was heading for the top spot in the UK charts with her second album, Echo, and one of the album’s songs, My Hands, will bring in extra revenue as it features on the new soundtrack of one of the world’s best-selling video game franchises, Final Fantasy.

www.societylivingmagazine.com

The 24-year-old has recently turned down a £1 million offer to pose for the men’s magazine Playboy, but she has offered her services to both the Twilight Saga franchise and TV’s True Blood (been on UK’s Channel 4 since October) as she is a huge fan of these current vampire fads. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely she will ever get her wish of starring in the latter, as True

Blood creator ALAN BALL has so far ruled-out all celebrities’ requests to appear in the show. She recently put the racist incident, when she got punched in the face during a book signing by an X Factor reject, behind her to play her first full live show on home “turf” at the Hackney Empire. Having personally spent many a night in that part of London… she must be a brave girl.

BACKSTAGE PASS

THIS IS IT – BUT NOT YET According to the LA Times, Sony’s attempt to release JACKO’s This Is It DVD in time for the Christmas market was thwarted by America’s National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO), who were successful in getting the original two-week release period, which should have ended on 11 November, extended until early to mid-December. During that first two-week period the film grossed over $200 million worldwide. The average window between a film’s theatrical debut and DVD release is about 129 days so if NATO get their way it will not be in shops until February at the earliest (it’s been rumoured that Sony might wait until Easter) – if you don’t

A

t this time of the year concerts are always thin on the ground as most artists take time off to enjoy the festivities but Madrid has the Californian lofi/punk band THE WAVVES on 17 December, while veteran Swedish rockers EUROPE, who can still pull in a crowd, take to the stage on 22 January. For ticket info go to www.ticketmaster.es. Veteran rockers THE WHO will perform at the prestigious halftime show at America’s premier sporting event the Superbowl. They will follow the likes of BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, TOM PETTY, PRINCE, ROLLING STONES, U2, AEROSMITH and JANET JACKSON, who famously had a “wardrobe malfunction” during her 2004 appearance. Last year’s Superbowl attracted more than 90 million viewers in the US alone and the band will take to the stage around 1.30 to 1.45am during the early hours of Monday 8 February. Rider (an artist’s backstage request list) of the month must go to RIHANNA. At the recent launch for her new album, Rated R, she asked for six pizzas, six portions of fried noodles in sauce, six microwave lasagnes, 10 portions of chips, 10 large packets of crisps and pots of dips, 15 doughnuts and 50 chicken drumsticks – oh, and an apple. And the bizarre rider of the month award must go to who else but MARIAH CAREY. Switching on the Christmas lights at a London shopping centre last month her demands included being driven in a Rolls (the make of car had to be changed six times before she was satisfied) along a pink carpet to

the pink podium inside the shopping centre, where she would then illuminate the lights with a wave of her wand. She also insisted that 20 white kittens be supplied and 100 white doves be released as part of the event, plus she had to be showered with pink butterfly-shaped confetti at the end of the ceremony. Health and safety concerns meant that the kittens and the doves were a no no – exit one very stroppy diva. You’ll like this one… the penniless Romanian pop twins THE CHEEKY GIRLS reckon X Factor’s terrible twins JEDWARD can’t sing – do the words kettle, pot and black come to mind? And

want to wait you can always buy one from a looky looky man! But you have to see this in its full cinematic glory – this scribe did, and it was, well... but the anti-JACKO brigade have said, “Is This It?” The movie is 7-4 with on-line betting site Paddy Power to be nominated for a best picture Oscar and 6-1 to win it; while JACKO is 25-1 to win a best actor Oscar from beyond the grave. The 2010 Oscar nominations will be announced on 2 February and the awards take place on 7 March. Did you know that his funeral was, pardon the pun, nearly put on ice after a row about who was gonna pay the $1 million bill?

you have to admit CALVIN HARRIS did his street cred no harm at all with his gate-crashing, pineapple, and backside slapping appearance – he should have come on stage singing that monstrosity of a song Agadoo – and it’s a pity he didn’t have a pair of garden shears with him. Anyway, who cares: the only thing the X Factor’s answer to South Park’s TERRANCE and PHILLIP might be doing this time next year is local panto! Talking of that awful programme, STING summed it all up saying, it’s "a soap opera which has nothing to do with music; it’s televised karaoke and a preposterous talent show

which has put music back decades" – he took the words right out of my mouth! JOSS STONE, who reckons the British media have created her "atrocious personality" because she keeps her private life private, has defended her use of cannabis. “I run a bath, roll a spliff and listen to music.” I bet it’s not LILY ALLEN’s. Meanwhile, if you wondered why you haven’t heard much from silly LILY of late, it’s because she has quit using MySpace, Twitter, email, etc. etc., and has also given away her laptop and BlackBerry after her boyfriend got peed off with her social networking obsession and gave her an ultimatum – me or blog off. She has also said she is gonna take a break from the music biz – this wouldn’t have something to do with super producer MARK RONSON saying he doesn’t wanna work with her again? So will they or won’t they reform? The original SUGARBABES line-up, that is. Apparently top PR agent CLAIRE POWELL is pushing hard for a KEISHA BUCHANAN, MUTYA BUENA and SIOBHAN DONAGHY reunion and LITTLE BOOTS has put her name forward just in case "one isn’t up for it". Understatement of the century – WESTLIFE say that over the years they recorded too many cover versions. So what did they do for their latest single? Release their take of DAUGHTRY’s What About Now. And their compatriots, the grieving BOYZONE, plan to make a movie about STEPHEN GATELY – if WESTLIFE made a film, what would it be a remake of?

hen did you realise you wanted to be a singer and how did you then go about it? “I always loved music from when I was little, and I have to say that Michael Jackson was my inspiration. I went on a talent show in Australia, which I won, and I was offered a recording contract live on air, and things went from there.” What are the significant events in your life? “My children being born – amazing.” You have achieved fame twice in your life. How does it differ this time? “It means more this time. It’s deeper; you appreciate it so much more. People are so caring and I have never experienced anything like it.” 24

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT What careers do you think your children might choose and what do you hope for them? “I don’t mind what my children do, as long as they’re happy. If they want to go into an industry like this, then that’s fine, but I will tell them all the pitfalls.”

Peter’s album ‘Revelation’ is available in stores and on download now.

You have a very close family and are seen as a role model to fathers. How do you feel about that? “If other fathers see me as a role model, thanks, I am honoured and humbled. Family is the most important thing to me. I speak to my Mum and Dad (in Australia) every day. And I talk to my brothers and sister (all in Australia also) every other day – so I believe in family being close.”

Highlights of your career? “Performing at Wembley Arena – it was something I dreamed about all my life, and when I got to do it was a dream come true.””

NOVELLIS

Did you actually enjoy your jungle experience and how did it feel to find out about Chris Moyles’ campaign to get Mysterious Girl re-released? “I loved my time in the jungle; it makes you realise that if you’re hungry enough you can do anything. I hate spiders but we were all so hungry, myself included, that I crawled through

them; they were all over me, but I did, and we ate a good meal that night. I met some very interesting people in there, including Jonny Rotten. He was a real character; however, he didn’t clean his teeth for the whole time. Then I came out and Chris Moyles was campaigning to get Mysterious Girl re-released, which he did, and I have to thank him so much for that; he has always supported me well.” Tell me about the new album and single…… “My new single is Unconditional. It was a song that I wrote about Harvey, and it is so very precious and personal to me. It’s a song for all parents and step-parents; it’s about the unconditional love that you have for your children.”

Tell me about your style of music, inspirations for song writing, any interesting stories behind certain songs…… “The album is deeply personal. Some people write books; I wrote an album. If you listen to the words you’ll understand.” Who would you like to collaborate with – singers, producers, etc. – and why? “Maybe in the future. We did discuss it for this album, but it was important for me to do this on my own. I funded the whole project and, as I have already said, it is a deeply personal album, so it was important for me to do this my way.”

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT “Unconditional” the new female fragrance from Peter Andre is available exclusively at The Perfume Shop now, prices start from £14.99

We love your new female fragrance. Tell us about it…… “I know I’m really proud of it and it went in at number one, which is great! I was involved with all the planning of the design of the box and bottle, the smell and the name. We decided to call it Unconditional as that is the name of my latest single as well. It is so that people can buy it for those they love unconditionally or someone they have something to thank for, whether it be your mother, sister, teacher or carer.” You have been over to Marbella this summer. What do you like about it? “I was fortunate to go to Marbella, but only for three days. It was beautiful though. I took Junior and Princess with me; unfortunately 28

Harvey couldn’t come – but the other two had a great time. We had an amazing villa, so that’s where we spent our time. That way I could spend loads of quality time with the children. What did you think of Novelli’s in Spain? “We went for dinner at Jean-Christophe Novelli’s restaurant – the food was incredible, and again the kids had a great time, as the chef allowed them to make their own desserts.” Which celebrities would you like to meet, dead or alive? “Michael Jackson. I am fortunate enough to know other members of the Jackson family; however, I never got to meet Michael, and I would have loved to.”

Who has been your favourite celebrity that you have met? “I can’t say one or the other; most celebrities you meet are really nice. There are one or two who aren’t, but they don’t last long in this industry; the public work it out. Most people are genuine and appreciate what they do, and how lucky they are.” What do you like to do in your spare time? “I spend as much time with my children as possible. They are everything to me.” You are looking in great shape, better than ever…… “It was originally down to stress, but I am now sticking to a work-out routine, which I do with my brother Mike, and that helps me stay in shape.”

Richly deserved new Volvo trophy for Ross Fisher

Happy celebrations with finalists of Volvo Masters Amateur tournament

Marathon triumph by Fisher in World Match Play Championship It took him 126 holes over four days but in the end 28-year-old Englishman Ross Fisher’s perseverance and determination paid off handsomely when he beat US star Anthony Kim 4&3 in the final of the Volvo World Match Play Championship at Finca Cortesín, to win a cheque for €750,000 and rise to a career-best 17th in the world rankings. In the consolation final for third place, Australian Robert Allenby carded an ace on the way to matching Angel Cabrera’s eight-under 64 – before trumping the Argentinean and reigning US Masters champion with an eagle on the first extra hole of sudden-death. Those failing to get through the round-robin phase (before the weekend semi-finals and final) included pre-tournament favourite Lee Westwood, Colombian heart-throb Camilo Villegas, Northern Irish wunderkind Rory McIlroy, the only Spaniard in the field, Sergio García, and Paul Casey, at fourth, the highest world-ranked played in the field. It was the first World Match Play held outside Wentworth in the tournament’s 45-year history, and continued Volvo’s link with Andalucía after the end of the Volvo Masters era at Valderrama last season.

A

s this is my last column of the year – and the first for 2010 – it is a good time to have a look back at the market’s progress over the past 12 months, and preview our prospects for the next year. At the beginning of 2009 it was very quiet, then business started to pick up in March and we had a good summer – with both tenants and buyers. It has been a mix of nationalities, with no one particular nationality dominating. They are people who simply love Marbella, and are mostly buying to live in the homes themselves. It’s been challenging the past year, but I am very happy to be a part of this Marbella scene. It is true that there was a serious market downturn in 2009: with prices about 30 per cent lower than in 2007-2008, though Madrid was between 10 and 20 per cent, and the higher end of the market, the one we mostly deal with, was sometimes less than 30 per cent. In such a difficult market people are usually willing to negotiate, and we try to find a solution that satisfies both parties.

DIARY

In 2010 our Sotheby’s International Realty brand will become even stronger, with offices in England, Germany, Switzerland, Portugal, Italy and throughout France, including the southern areas, as well as the biggest number of offices in the US. We have various get-togethers during the year and that’s one of the reasons we became an affiliate: to have access to a bigger flow of customers. In Marbella, the urban town plan will come into effect at the start of 2010 and this will give the town a real push. Also, the world economy is starting to pick up, and people are certainly happier now. There should be an upturn in 2010, not necessarily in prices – because many sellers are showing a resistance to offering lower prices as they see more and more sales going through again – but in the fact that more business will be done. This is still a good time to take advantage of the market, because it won’t last indefinitely! On the social scene, coming up in December on the 11th is our Marbella Rotary gala dinner at Hotel

Puente Romano. The fee is €120 and funds are being raised for the local Caritas charity, which means that all the money will go directly to people in need, and not through any organisational structure. I have really enjoyed being president this year, with one of the highlights being our weekly conferences. A guest speaker last month was my friend Luis Cáseres, who talked about the ongoing aftermath of Chernobyl. According to Luis the effects are far-reaching, especially among children and their families from the main affected areas. About eight years ago, the association of dentists in Sevilla – which Luis presides over – arranged for children from Chernobyl, suffering from leukaemia and thyroid cancer, to spend three months in people’s homes in Sevilla. Just being in the Mediterranean climate, and enjoying the Mediterranean diet, gave them a two-year extension on their lives! They also have their teeth cleaned and other dental work, such as fillings, taken care of. The association really does a great job. Another association doing some very important work is Amsudan, and its president Juan de Orbaneja. The situation in Sudan has improved a lot recently, with much of the violence now over, and Amsudan has managed to build schools for 1,500 children. This can be life-changing for the kids, as it gets them off the streets and away from the fields. Education is so important. There was a strong business element to many of the events I attended last month, including the monthly get-together with local business ladies, and a meeting with about other 20 members of CIT (Centro de Iniciativas Turísticas in Marbella) where we had a very fruitful and productive exchange of ideas. Last month I also continued my “PR” campaign on behalf of Marbella, with invitations to appear on various national TV programmes (including Antena 3 and La Sexta), as well as radio interviews. For a long time some sections of the media were bashing Marbella but there has been a turning point and now people want to see beautiful homes – and I’m happy to show them! I am often asked about good investment opportunities in other countries and there are some interesting markets: for example, Brazil, especially after it was named as the venue for the 2016 Olympics. However, even though I think in an international context, I always come back to Marbella because it has so much to offer. Lately we have been concentrating more on Spain, because there is the advantage that people know the laws and know where they stand. And here in Marbella there are still new shops, boutiques and restaurants opening all the time – big names such as Marks & Spencer and Hard Rock Café, which is a positive sign. I think we will come out flying from this crisis, but it will take time. We now need to put 2009 behind us and look forward to a better year – improving as it goes along. I believe we have hit rock bottom and the trend is upwards, though I have to admit it always takes a little longer than I think, as I am the eternal optimist! In the meantime, if you would like our traditional calendar with paintings by Antonio Cienfuegos, you are warmly invited to pop into our office and pick one up within the next 10 days. Finally, I hope you all have a great 2010 – the number even sounds good!

PUTTING THE MERCEDES SLS AMG THROUGH ITS PACES ON THE LAGUNA SECA RACEWAY, MOTORING AUTHOR, RACING DRIVER AND PHOTO-JOURNALIST IAN KUAH SOON FOUND IT HAD ALL THE ANSWERS – AND SOME MORE!

ON THE ROAD

I

n the language of performance, powerto-weight ratio is a headline issue. The C63 AMG is the smallest and cheapest car to use the mighty 6,208cc four-cam V8 motor. In the mildest state of tune available for this engine, it has 457hp at 6,800rpm and 600Nm of torque at 5,000rpm pulling 1,730kg. That is 3.79kg/hp. Thanks to its lightweight alloy space-frame and bodywork, the new SLS AMG weighs just 1,620kg. But its tuned and dry-sump version of the same basic motor gives it 571hp at 6,800rpm and 650Nm of torque at 4,750rpm. That is 2.84kg/hp, a 25 per cent improvement in power-to-weight ratio. As the Pirelli ad famously says, “power is nothing without control”, and, while the C63 AMG has a good chassis, the SLS AMG has a great one. The combination of this ability to use all of that extra 114hp, 50Nm of torque, coupled to the sheer speed of the new AMG Speedshift 7-speed DCT twin-clutch gearbox puts it in a different realm in the performance stakes. With

46

www.societylivingmagazine.com

0-100km/h coming up in 3.8 seconds, and an electronically-limited top speed of 317km/h, the SLS AMG is a full-blown supercar. It only takes a corner or two to ascertain that the steering of the SLS has top-drawer feel and feedback. In fact, it has one of the best power-assisted steering systems I have encountered recently in a front-engined, rear wheel drive car. Thanks to its stiff body structure, when you turn the perfectly sized, flat-bottomed, Alcantara-clad steering wheel a smidgen, the front end of the car responds immediately. The first time you experience this quick response, it might initially give the impression that the car is going to be twitchy, but nothing could be further from the truth. As you take a few bends, you quickly discover that the rear end is securely bolted down and works perfectly with the pointy front end. The low centre of gravity and perfectly placed centre of rotation ensure

that the SLS feels all of a piece, like an extension of your thoughts. Its second impressive dynamic trait is a good primary and secondary ride for a sports car. Compared to the ridiculous 1,850kg of the carbon-fibre SLR, the 1,620kg kerb weight of the aluminium SLS is not too shabby. On the fly, it feels even more nimble than this would imply. Around town and with the gearbox in Normal mode, you can drive the SLS to the shops and cruise around without any of the shortcomings normally associated with highly strung supercars. The twisty and sometimes bumpy hill roads that marked out the first half of our driving route from the hotel to the Laguna Seca raceway were a good test of the car’s agility and ride. The supple secondary ride takes the edge off short, sharp bumps very effectively, while longer wave undulations are handled with exquisite damper control. This is a car you can drive hundreds of kilometres in a day without

ON THE ROAD

“Like reaching cruising altitude in a jet plane, the SLS has a speed where everything just smooths out”

feeling shaken or stirred. The low roll angle in bends adds to comfort levels too. The grunt from the 6.2 litre V8 is most satisfying, and as you explore the full extent of its throttle travel its sonorous soundtrack turns thunderous in that classic bent crank V8 fashion. The slightest whiff of throttle and the car simply displaces itself rapidly to higher speeds. Even on a light throttle, it proved very hard to stay below the 55mph (88km/h) speed limit on these country roads. That is the thing about having abundant torque on tap in a car of modest weight. A 70mph (112km/h) cruise on the freeway also felt faintly ridiculous and, while the SLS wafted along at this speed, it felt like 40mph (64km/h). Joining one stretch of freeway from a side exit, and using the big motor’s grunt for scant seconds, the car shot to three figure speeds that felt w w w. s o c i e t y l i v i n g m a g a z i n e . c o m

47

ON THE ROAD

totally natural. Like reaching cruising altitude in a jet plane, the SLS has a speed where everything just smooths out, and that is around 100mph (160kph)! On the racetrack where the SLS can really stretch its long legs, the more aggressive side of its nature comes to the fore. The first thing you notice is just how well balanced the chassis is. You literally think the front end into turns, and the ContiSportContact 5 tyres provide impressive grip for a standard nonCup type road tyre. Even when pushing hard into slow bends, understeer is minimal. The back end just grips and grips, and when it does let go the slide is very progressive and easily caught with a flick of the wrist. After a few couple of laps to familiarise myself with this demanding circuit, with its elevation changes a couple of blind falling away bends, I was exiting a few of the bends with power on oversteer because it was so 48

www.societylivingmagazine.com

ON THE ROAD “This is a car that makes an average driver look good, and an experienced driver look and feel like an ace”

easy to manage and so much fun. And that was with the three-stage ESP in Sport mode. Providing you are smooth, AMG’s ESP programming will allow you to get the tail moving into oversteer up to a point before the electronic nanny intervenes. This means you can have fun without switching the ESP off and, if you do, it will jump back in when you hit the brakes. Under full throttle, the 650Nm of torque arrives progressively, so you don’t get the shove in the back that some drivers love about forced aspirated motors. By the same token, this means that it is less easy to overwhelm the grip of the big rear tyres, so conversion of power and torque into forward motion is very effective. The anchors are a specially developed high performance system with cross-drilled floating vented discs at the front. Larger ceramic composite discs are an option and these reduce unsprung weight by a massive 40 per cent. These powerful brakes have good pedal feel and wash off big speeds very convincingly w w w. s o c i e t y l i v i n g m a g a z i n e . c o m

49

ON THE ROAD

“The SLS AMG upsets the status quo by being a super proficient all-rounder at a comparatively affordable price”

with no drama. Stability under braking is also very impressive, and weight transfer is well contained, so techniques like trail braking feel very natural. All the time, the chassis is working away happily below you; the one underlying trait that stands out is how balanced and safe the car feels. Even though I have never driven at this demanding circuit before, I soon felt confident to explore the car’s outer limits with no sense that it was going to ever turn around and bite. The harder I pushed, the more it became apparent that the SLS had the answers to my probing questions and was not going to run out of talent. This is a car that makes an average driver look good, and an experienced driver look and feel like an ace. Incidentally, its Nurburgring lap time is an impressive seven minutes 40 seconds. In aerodynamic terms, the SLS has an unremarkable Cd of 0.36, a function of its retro shape. However, in aerodynamic stability terms, it is close to neutral, with minimal lift over the front axle and zero lift over the rear axle at 200km/h. The rear spoiler deploys at 120km/h to aid stability, and provides 20kg of downforce over the rear axle at top speed. It can also be activated manually. With the big V8 positioned as far back in the chassis as possible, the SLS is a mid-frontengined car. Its transaxle design results in a 50

www.societylivingmagazine.com

weight distribution of 47/53 per cent, giving the SLS its inherent good balance and traction. Unlike other AMG models that use a Drexler limited-slip differential as part of the optional Performance Package, the SLS has a mechanical Graziano LSD with a locking action of 60 per cent under acceleration and 40 per cent under braking as standard. This is incorporated into the rear-mounted Getrag-made, paddle-shift operated AMG Speedshift DCT 7-speed gearbox, which receives power from the engine via a light but immensely strong carbon-fibre driveshaft weighing just four kilograms, that lives inside the alloy torque tube rigidly linking the engine and gearbox. Shift times are as low as 100ms and the system offers four modes: “C” Controlled Efficiency, “S” Sport, “S+” Sport plus and “M” Manual. The automatic double-declutching function is active in S. S+ and M modes. There is also a Race Start function that optimises traction off the line. Refreshingly, in a world of overpriced supercars, some of which do not deliver on their maker’s promises, the SLS AMG upsets the status quo by being a super proficient all rounder at a comparatively affordable price. If you look at its price point of €177,310 (including tax) in Germany, it is more expensive than the Audi R8 V10 or Porsche Turbo, but substantially cheaper than the

Aston Martin DBS or Ferrari 599GTB, which on engine position and performance would be its natural rivals. “We priced the SLS to sell,” said AMG’s pragmatic CEO, Volker Mornhinweg. A complete new car that is not based on any production Mercedes-Benz model is a huge step forward for AMG. The fact that their very first car is so clearly accomplished first time out pays homage to the clear thinking and huge road and racecar experience that has its home in Affalterbach. The SLS AMG opens a new chapter in AMG’s illustrious history.

STYLING The debut of the SLS AMG brings Mercedes full circle from the original 300SL Gullwing road car of 1955. While allusions were drawn between the 300SL Gullwing and the SLR, now that the SLS has broken cover it is clear that AMG’s first ever ground up car is the real descendant of the 300SL. In both concept and styling, I thought the SLS was the successor to the 300SL Uhlenhaut Coupe. Mercedes’ design chief, Gorden Wagener, partially agreed but said he would take it even further back to the 300SL Panamericana racecar from 1952, which had a purity of line slightly lacking in the later road cars.

ON THE ROAD

TECHNICAL FILE MERCEDES SLS AMG Engine: 6.2 litre V8 Maximum power: 571bhp Maximum torque: 650Nm Transmission: AMG Speedshift 7-speed DCT twin-clutch Top speed: 317 km/h 0-100 km/h: 3.8 seconds Price: approx. €177,310 (including tax) in Germany

ENGINE The most powerful version of the 6,208cc (102.2 x 94.6mm bore x stroke) AMG V8 is normally rated at 525hp. The SLS AMG version is good for 571hp at 6,800rpm and 650Nm of torque at 4,750rpm. The extra power comes from a raft of changes to the intake and exhaust systems, along with some internal upgrades. “We paid close attention to the effective length of the intake pipe length, and the greater space available in the SLS engine bay,” explained Friedrich Eichler, Director of Powertrain at Mercedes-AMG. “Instead of a two-stage manifold, we now have just one stage, with the two throttle bodies enlarged to 78mm diameter. We developed a completely new intake manifold for the SLS that is just 190cm long. This compares to 220cm for models like the SL63 and C63, and up to 360cm for the S63! That means the pressure drop along the manifold is now much less.” To balance this out and maximise efficiency, the engineers designed a unique tubular exhaust system for the SLS. Taking advantage of the extra room available in the engine bay, this uses near equal-length pipes, between 460 and 500mm long on both banks, significantly longer than on any other AMG car with this engine.

52

www.societylivingmagazine.com

The angle of the collector pipes is narrow to reduce backpressure, and this manifold design contributes to improved gas speed and a low level of residual gas in the cylinders during load exchange with each firing pulse. The 102.2mm diameter pistons are replaced with lightweight forged equivalents that cut reciprocating mass by nearly 500gr including gudgeon pins and piston rings. This is a saving of around 10 per cent. A unique internal design feature that came about partly through the move to dry sump lubrication is the use of “air spring” ventilation. This means that the air below the pistons on every down stroke does not leak away into the oil and can be used as a booster spring to help the piston rise on the next upward stroke. This “air spring” effect gives a 13.6hp boost to the motor. It is an AMG invention and the first such application ever. With its own unique fuelling and ignition maps putting the final seal on this finely tuned motor, AMG felt enough changes were made to the base M156 V8 to re-designate it M159.

PRODUCTION One of the most amazing things about the SLS AMG is how little time it took to go from a

clean sheet of paper to production car. In an industry where six to seven years is the norm, the small AMG team managed it in just over three years. “We started in January 2006 and had defined all parameters by June of that year,” explained AMG’s charismatic boss, Volker Mornhinweg. “Speed is one of the advantages of our small size, and the board of Mercedes-Benz allowed us to effectively do what we wanted. The project was financed internally by AMG, and we only called upon Mercedes for help with things like ESP and other high-level electronic calibrations. “The advantage we had in starting from scratch was being able to set out the ideal wheelbase, track and other parameters that we knew would give us the best performance, and build the car around these dimensions,” he said. The SLS is built at Sindelfingen on one floor of a building formerly used for W211 E-Class production. This facility became available when a new building was erected for W212 E-Class production. The SLS line is unique within the Mercedes-Benz production regime for being an assembly line set up for low-volume, hand-built cars. Only one robotised machine is used in the making of the SLS, and that installs the front windscreen.

Nicki Waterman TOP TRAINER TO THE STARS OFFERS USEFUL ADVICE FOR A HEALTHIER AND FITTER LIFESTYLE – AND VALUABLE TIPS TO LOSE THOSE EXTRA KILOS

Christmas drinks

W

ith numerous parties, lunches, nights out and evenings in with family and friends, it’s easy to consume vast amounts of alcohol during the festive season. But, while plenty of booze will help social events go with a swing, it won’t do much to keep your waistline in shape. It’s fine to enjoy a drink – just remember to choose sensibly and follow these tips. It’s a favourite trick, but mix white wine with soda water or diet lemonade to make it last twice as long and half the calories. If you can’t bear to dilute it, opt for a dry white or red wine as these contain fewer calories than sweeter wines. Half a bottle of red or dry white wine contains around 250 calories! You have been warned. Beware of alcopops – they’re loaded with calories and little else. And because they don’t taste very alcoholic it’s easy to drink large amounts of them. If you like the fruity flavour, add a dash of cordial or fruit juice to a wine and soda. Meanwhile, there are a few reduced-sugar alcopops now on the market so look out for these – although remember, they are still high in alcohol.

VICTORIA BECKHAM ON STRICT NEW DIET Victoria Beckham has embarked on a strict new diet to maintain her slim figure. An insider says Victoria is keen that sales of her designer clothes stay strong and so is eating just berries and raw fish to guarantee she avoids putting on weight. “Victoria’s only indulgence is a glass of wine every evening,” the source claims. “She thinks she’s the best ambassador for the clothes she designs, so she wants to be model thin.”

HEALTH & FITNESS SWAP… A MINI PARTY SAUSAGE ROLL WITH 124 CALORIES AND 9.4 GRAMS OF FAT FOR… A MINI PARTY PIZZA WITH 50 CALORIES AND 1.5 GRAMS OF FAT

EAT, DRINK BE MERRY (AND FOR ONCE DON’T WORRY ABOUT IT!)

Christmas diet tips

Follow in the footsteps of celebrities and enjoy a glass of bubbly. In general you drink less as it’s served in smaller glasses and the bubbles can help fill you up. Allow 100 calories for a glass. Most measures of spirits poured at home will be larger than those served in bars and pubs, with the result that your drink will probably contain twice as many calories. If you’re going to do a lot of entertaining at home, it’s worth investing in a spirits measure so that you can measure out your favourite tipple. In the meantime, always pour spirits into the glass before adding ice or mixers, so you can see just how much alcohol you have. It’s the oldest trick in the book, but mix spirits with low-cal mixers such as diet cola, diet lemonade, slimline tonic or slimline bitter lemon. Allow around 50 calories for a single (25ml) shot with a diet mixer. Steer clear of beer, lager and cider as they’re loaded with calories. And the higher the alcohol content, the more calories they contain. For example, a pint of standard beer contains around 160 calories, whereas a bottle of strong lager can contain anywhere between 120 and 200 calories alone. Watch out, too, for trendy new ciders served in a pint glass with ice. They contain more than 200 calories per pint. Beware of trendy wine bars. Many serve spirits in double measures (50ml) as the standard with the result that you get double the calories. Some pubs also serve 35ml measures of spirits rather than 25ml measures and so also contain more calories. Finally, watch out for huge wine glasses – some are so large that a glass of wine may actually be close to half a bottle. Choose cocktails with care. As a guideline, avoid anything that’s made with cream, coconut milk or syrupy juices – they’re packed with calories. And remember that the more shots a cocktail contains, the higher its calorie value will be. Where possible, ask for diet mixers to be used and remember to sip slowly! Avoid creamy liqueurs after dinner and instead have a single shot of brandy if you really fancy ending your meal in style. Most cream-based liqueurs contain around 80-100 calories per 25ml measure compared with 50 calories in a brandy.

Remember that happy hours are designed to get you to drink more and keep you in the same place all night. Unfortunately this means that, while the bar gains pounds, so do you as you indulge in far more drinks than you normally would. The key is not to give into temptation. Finally, why not offer to drive from time to time over the festive season, so that you won’t be able to drink anything other than low-cal diet drinks!

WHAT’ S NEW? A diet of cheese and dairy can help you shed those excess pounds It has long been blamed for causing nightmares. But cheese may also give you a dream figure. A diet packed with cheese and other dairy products helps with weight loss, a study has found. Australian slimmers were put on lowcalorie diets which included varying amounts of cheese, yoghurt and low-fat milk. Those who increased their daily servings of dairy products from three to five lost the most weight. They also had lower blood pressure and the least tummy fat, and “significantly improved” their chances of avoiding heart disease and diabetes. The researchers, from Curtin University of Technology in Perth, said that, although dairy products are widely perceived as being fatty, they have a place in the slimmer’s shopping basket. Dieters, however, should still keep an eye on their fat and calorie intake. Cheese and other dairy products are high in protein, which helps us feel full quickly and speeds up the metabolism. Laura Wyness, of the British Nutrition Foundation, said dairy products were a good source of calcium and vitamins, as well as protein. However, she warned that cheeses can be high in salt and advised dieters to check labelling before buying.

DID YOU KNOW? …superfood duck Duck has a reputation for being a fatty meat, and yet a 100gr/31/2oz serving without skin contains just 147 calories and 6.7 grams of fat – less than most self-basting turkeys. If you fancy cooking duck instead of the traditional Christmas dinner, the other good news is that it contains as much iron as roast beef, as well as zinc, which helps boost the immune system. And it tastes delicious served with a fruity plum sauce!

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED What’s the healthiest option when I dip into the Christmas sweet tin? Nicki says: I’d go for chocolate brazils or hazelnuts. Chocolate has a low glycaemic index (GI), which means that it’s digested slowly so you won’t feel the need to eat lots. And, because nuts help to lower cholesterol, you can enjoy your treat knowing that it’s doing you some good, too.

AND FINALLY… Munch on a crisp granny smith apple or a raw carrot for the ultimate Christmas stressbuster. The loud noise and physical sensation of munching immediately lowers the stress hormones that stimulate the appetite. TOP NEW RANGES, TREATMENTS AND NEWS FROM THE WORLD OF MAKE-UP, SKIN CARE AND FRAGRANCE THE CHERYL COLE EFFECT It’s all about lashes at the moment and who rocked this trend better than anyone? The Queen of X Factor - Mrs Cole, of course. After years of wearing fake lashes, the ladies from Girls Aloud have collaborated with Eylure to design show-stopping falsies. The collection includes five styles of eyelashes inspired by each Girls Aloud band member, with Cheryl's Hollywood style lashes the longest and densest and Sarah opting for a dramatic, shorter look. I have to say Cheryl’s were a bit much for me. My favourite were Sarah’s, which are designed to deliver a full-on lash look, yet you can still move your eyelids (unlike Cheryl’s). Crowded with lashes for fullness and texture, these are ideal to give an intensified finish for a special night out. asos.com

MY PRECIOUS Now you show me a girlie who wouldn’t want to find this under her Christmas tree. The GHD Precious Limited Edition Gift Set brings together sophistication and class with its unique design, boasting a gift set including a travel hair dryer, heat resistant mat, chic carry case and the lavish styler itself. Everything you need to create stunning seasonal styles. This is the first GHD iron to feature a baroque design, and again has been inspired by the looks that have been appearing on the catwalks. A gloss black appearance with a complex and detailed silver floral pattern that stems from the lower part of the GHD right to the tip. At €219, this will definitely be on my wish list. Take note. KISS ME QUICK

SHINE ON

This would have made a perfect Christmas present for one of my friends. However, I like it too much and have decided to keep it for myself (the whole Christmas thing about sharing obviously doesn‘t apply to me). Ruby & Millie’s 2009 lip purse is fantastic for any lip gloss loving girls. This gorgeous leather bag houses three candy coloured glosses in Beige 80, Sunset 48 and Twilight 42. All perfect for that secret kiss under the mistletoe. Another favourite is their Metallic Kit 2009. This charming mirrored palette contains a gorgeous set of multi-purpose metallics for lips and eyes, along with a beautiful shimmer powder and brush to sweep over your body and face wherever you want to shine. The silver eye creams and gold highlighter can be used to line eyes for daytime or give your lids all-over glam for a dramatic night-time look. Also includes a rose gold face and body metal, cheek colour and blusher brush. rubyandmillie.com

It’s gorgeous, it’s loaded with Eyeshadows, and it’s ecofriendly! The Sustainable Shadow Box holds 10 dynamic Eyeshadows, a cruelty-free Eyeshadow brush, and a travel size bottle of Eyeshadow Primer Potion. Fab-u-licious. Most of the shades included in this palette are my favourites from Urban Decay so it’s fantastic having them all tucked away in one palette! Great for travelling as well. The shadows are pigmented and contain a super dose of wonderful shimmer. I have been wearing Twice Baked all of the time and Oil Slick is perfect for a little night-time drama. I have been wearing Urban Decay shadows for over a decade now and I still love them. hqhair.com

FINCA CORTESÍN In the lap of luxury eing asked to have a treatment at the Finca Cortesín spa was like being told you can have a Christmas present early. Having visited the hotel twice before I had been into the spa but never been lucky enough to try a treatment. I was met by Guillermo Martin, the director of the spa, who gave me a personal tour detailing the three different sections and showing me the relaxed atmosphere. The spa has two philosophies – relax and health – and this certainly comes across as you move through the different areas: thermal, cabins and fitness. The thermal areas are variously for men only, women only and mixed – the latter including a plunge pool at 10-12 degrees and a snow cave at minus 12 degrees. The fitness room is very well equipped and guests can take advantage of the personal trainer service or receive advice about the machines, as well as Pilates, body balance, stretching and aerobics. The treatment rooms (six individual and one double) are designed for the comfort of clients: the floor and beds are heated and the light in the room depends on which treatment you are having. The double room is available for couples

to enjoy their treatments together; there is an extra large bath they can relax in for 20 minutes or so before the treatment while savouring champagne, cocktails and other delights. Guillermo introduced me to my therapist Arlette, who has over 20 years experience. The spa uses Biologique Recherche products which are totally natural, with high quality composition and active ingredients, and un-perfumed. Arlette explained to me that the thinking behind Biologique Recherche is that, as the same person can have a different type of skin at different times, the skin needs to be analysed each time to ensure the correct products are used and the right treatment is provided. My treatment was an Oxygenating Facial which cleans and moisturises the skin. Arlette massaged the skin, cleaning it and preparing it for the other elements of the facial, which made me start to drift off. Willing myself to stay awake, I relaxed as Arlette applied a masque to my face and arms. While I was covered in the masques and had a warm towel wrapped around me, she gave me a wonderful foot massage, exactly what I needed after walking around in heels all day!

Taking the masques off, Arlette used cold flannels to close the pores, keeping the moisture locked into my dry face. She finished the treatment by applying a serum and cream mixed together, advising me that serum is much more intense than just using cream, and my skin needed moisture. The treatment left me feeling rejuvenated and relaxed while my skin felt the smoothest it ever has. Arlette and the Biologique Recherche products worked miracles! I Finca Cortesín Spa are offering special Christmas treatments for individuals and couples and spa gift certificates – the perfect present for that special someone. Princess Studios A fitness sanctuary for women PHOTOS RUTH JONES

rincess Studios, which opened earlier this year, is already a favourite for women on the Coast wanting to get fit. Jessica White caught up with Heidi Fulford, who owns the studio with Suzy White, to find out more about the ultimate in fitness.

P

Why did you set up Princess Studios? Suzy and I set up the studio because there didn't seem to be anywhere on the Costa del Sol where we could do the sort of dance and fitness classes we wanted. I lived in Los Angeles and when I moved to Spain I checked out all the gyms and studios but there were very few classes that interested me. We seemed to be stuck in a time warp. I was looking for fun and inspiring classes and didn't want to be doing classes in an aerobics studio with glass windows, overlooked by guys working out in the gym. What inspired you? I was recommended Suzy’s pole-dancing classes in Puerto Banús by my hairdresser. Not only were the classes fun but you were really doing a good work-out, PLUS you had a great party trick! Over time we both realised there was a gap in the market for a luxurious poledancing and fitness studio for ladies. Our timetable at Princess Studios reflects the classes that are currently taught in Los Angeles and we believe we have instructors of a similar quality to those in LA – in fact we have some instructors from LA.

Can you give us some background information on yourself and Suzy? Suzy is a professional dancer and previously was in a girl band! After giving birth to her daughter Lily three years ago she decided to stop dancing professionally and to teach instead. She then went on to take her instructor’s qualifications and the rest is history. I am a professional businesswoman; with my main business, translate4me.

start gently. It's important to get your fitness levels up before embarking on something like pole dancing, for example, which requires a fair amount of upper body strength. My advice would be to start with classes such as Pilates, 20/20/20 (abs, bums and thighs) and lower impact dance classes such as belly dancing and burlesque. The most important message we would like to give to anyone considering trying one of our classes is just to have fun. Release your inhibitions, get fit and have fun in the process. There are no judgements and we welcome all levels, ages, shapes and sizes.

What do you want your clients to feel when they come for lessons and when they leave? Well we want them to feel fit, healthy, buzzing and very happy after one of our classes. The studio is a sanctuary for women to come to, a place where they can relax, chill out, always be greeted by a friendly face and, if they want to, release the inner goddess from within. For clients who do not frequent a gym, what are the classes you would advise them to start with? If clients have not been taking regular classes or are out of shape I would recommend they 72

Health&Beauty The perfect smile NICOLA McGEORGE GIVES A PERSONAL INSIGHT INTO THE WORLD OF COSMETIC DENTISTRY

I

have always had a good set of teeth. I haven’t got any fillings. ( I promise I am not lying.) I have the perfect bite and have never needed a brace. My teeth have always been a little on the yellow side but nothing a good whitening system couldn’t fix. However, about two years ago I noticed that my front teeth where slightly opaque around the edges. Then, about six months later, I met up with an old friend whom I hadn’t seen in ages. Halfway through our meal he turned to me and said, “I never realised that your teeth went upwards.” I went home that night and started comparing my photos from over the last few years. He was right. My front teeth had not only got thinner, they had now receded into an inverted “V”.

Worried now, I started asking around for a reputable dentist (obviously mine wasn’t doing his job) and was pointed in the direction of Lotta Kure from The Dentists (a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry). She took one look at my teeth and said that it was obvious that I had been grinding my teeth at night and wearing them down. She also went through my diet and worked out that my very healthy diet was actually causing me damage. The mixture of my daily hot lemon water and regular acidic fruit smoothies were eroding my tooth enamel. My teeth had become so weak there was only one solution: cosmetic dentistry! I couldn’t believe this was happening. Lotta took a selection of photos of my teeth and then created a mould of my mouth

76

www.societylivingmagazine.com

so she could show me how my new teeth would look. Having these visual aids was extremely reassuring, I must say. She decided on porcelain veneers over crowns as the former is a much less invasive procedure. Less sound tooth structure is sacrificed and the preparation process is less traumatic for the tooth. In the end we agreed on six veneers; otherwise, if I had just two, I would have ended up looking like Bugs Bunny. Not the look I was going for. I also decided to whiten the rest of my teeth with the opalescence whitening system to improve the whole overall look. Lotta recommended that I should start using a gum shield at night to stop the grinding. The actual procedure was not as bad as people may think. After having the top layer of my teeth slightly filed down, Lotta took an impression which was to be sent to the lab in Sweden. She then fitted a set of temporary veneers, which is only for two weeks while your real veneers are being

made. This is also like a dress rehearsal. If you do not like them, your dentist can make adjustments and customise them to your liking. We did have a bit of a blip here where my Dad told me I reminded him of Esther Rantzen. After balling my eyes out for two days, Lotta filed them down to a shape that I was happy with. Two weeks later my new teeth arrived. Just in time as I had just swallowed one of my temporaries. My own fault as I had not listened to my dentist’s instructions and had bitten into a carrot. Lesson learned. After several injections, which caused my lips to form an Elvis smirk, Lotta removed my temporaries and then fitted me with the new ones. I have to admit I was terrified. Yet, as I turned and looked in the mirror a Hollywood smiled grinned back at me. They still looked totally natural and there wasn’t a “Katie Price” in sight. Within a month my gums were back to normal and my teeth felt as though they were my own. No longer the owner of little, bent, yellow teeth, I now finally have something to smile about.

Ask the surgeon ... Varicose veins THIS MONTH, IN OUR SPECIAL HEALTH SECTION FOCUSING ON LATEST TECHNIQUES AND TRENDS IN COSMETIC SURGERY, DR FRANCIS DHOBB OF THE ADVANCED VEIN CLINIC ANSWERS SOME COMMON QUESTIONS

Q A

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are abnormally swollen or enlarged blood vessels in the leg caused by the failure of the valves in the veins. Varicose veins and spider veins can be found in 40 per cent of women and 20 per cent of men above the age of 20.

Q What is the cause? A

Heredity is a primary factor in over 80 per cent of varicose vein cases. Other contributing factors may include pregnancy, obesity, hormone therapy, standing or sitting for long periods of time and leg injury.

Q What is currently the best treatment? A

Endovenous laser treatment is a new minimally invasive method for treating large varicose veins that eliminates the need for surgery in most cases. It allows a complete treatment of large varicose veins in one session. No hospital stay is required; it is a walk-in walk-out procedure performed under local anaesthesia.

Q How does it work?

Q What happens to my circulation if some of my veins are closed?

A

As a result of closing diseased veins, the many good veins will take over the flow of blood and your circulation will improve. For most patients, this means the disappearance of their leg discomfort.

Q How long is the recovery period? A

You will be able to walk one hour after treatment and return to your normal activity the following day.

A

Through a small puncture a laser fibre is inserted into the diseased vein, allowing its treatment from inside the lumen. It uses laser energy applied inside the incompetent vein to seal it shut.

Q Will I feel pain? A

Patients report feeling very little, if any, pain during or after the procedure. Plus,we are using the ultimate laser system that allows a painless treatment.

FINE DINING DA FABIO

Fabulous Italian food in an inviting all-round setting WORDS SAM JONES PHOTOS DAVID TOMS

T

here’s a genuinely welcoming feeling when you walk into Da Fabio – the popular Italian restaurant which opened earlier this year in the El Rosario urbanisation, just five minutes drive from central Marbella. The idea behind Da Fabio El Rosario – which was launched following the 10-year success of its sister restaurant on Marbella’s paseo – was to create an all-year-round venue (Da Fabio in Marbella has special opening hours during winter) with a central location which could be enjoyed year-round by local residents and the expat

community. The concept was clear from the onset: a versatile environment which welcomes families, couples or larger groups, with an emphasis on good prices without compromising quality and with an excellent choice of dishes. Da Fabio’s al fresco patio terrace is the perfect place to enjoy lunch, even in the winter months, while the main restaurant area is warm and inviting with a lively yet relaxed atmosphere. Both areas are complemented by an attentive yet personable waiting team who bring a noticeably friendly touch to the venue. Both the restaurant and kitchen are open from 11am to midnight every day, which makes Da Fabio the sort of place you can enjoy an early lunch or dinner with the family (special half portions can be prepared for kids), a business or lunch meeting, an evening dinner or a late night bite to eat. The overall area is very spacious, which also makes it an attractive venue for group parties or special occasions. The full take-away service has also proved very popular, with a spacious bar and seating area outside where you can enjoy a drink while waiting. Having eaten at the restaurant on a couple of occasions – both business lunches and less formal evening dinners – the team at Society Living Magazine can vouch for Da Fabio’s consistently good quality and presentation of dishes. The

selection of dishes is generous (so rest-assured there’s something for everyone) and there is an enticing list of specials of the day. Starters are a pure delight with a good choice of authentic Italian creations such as prosciutto, bruscetta and, a house favourite, mozzarella in carozza (mozzarella fried in bread crumbs with a tasty tomato sauce). If there are a few of you, I would definitely recommend ordering a selection of starters to share. On this occasion, I couldn’t resist Da Fabio’s signature antipasti (an assortment of Italian cold meats, fresh seafood, cheeses and dressed vegetables) which went down a storm with my dining partner and hungry photographer. Going all-out, we also opted for two delightful fish starters: succulent mussels cooked Italian-style in white wine, parsley, onions and lemon; and, having heard good reports about Da Fabio’s soups, the delicious fish soup, which will feature as a choice of starter on both the Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve menus. There is an ample choice of main dishes so we left the decision in the hands of Da Fabio’s very capable manager who treated us to a crosssection from the menu. Interestingly, the menu features over 40 tempting pasta dishes including a good choice of vegetarian options and fresh seafood pasta dishes which are consistently popular at Da Fabio and an absolute delight.

Popular variations include the linguine with fresh clams, mussels, white wine, garlic, parsley and olive oil (which we tried); pappardelle with smoked salmon, prawns, cherry tomatoes and a touch of cream; or the black ink tagliolini with fresh salmon, prawns, cherry tomatoes, parsley, brandy and a touch of tomato. There is also a choice of creative risotto dishes while pizzas at Da Fabio are light and crispy with freshly made dough and fresh toppings. We enjoyed the pizza Da Fabio, which is a treat for the eyes as much as the senses with fresh rocket, parmesan shavings and juicy cherry tomatoes – drizzled with infused chilli oil and sprinkled with black pepper, this was a delight! Finally, there is a selection of fresh fish and meat main dishes which includes catch of the day, grilled swordfish, salmon, or prawns; a choice of Italian chicken and veal dishes; authentic ossobucco; and a selection of Argentinean steaks – a meat lover’s dream! True to Italian form, the wine list and choice of desserts at Da Fabio are not to be missed! The wines combine a good mix of well-priced Italian and Spanish numbers including recommended chianti and the excellent Nero d’Avola from Sicily. The choice of Spanish reds comes from the popular Ribera del Duero region, while whites on the list include a good frascati and chardonnay. Creative cocktails are colourful and well-presented and, for something extra special, a number of cavas and champagnes are also available – which is definitely worth bearing in mind at this time of year. Typically Italian desserts such as tiramisu and profiteroles are indulgent yet thoroughly delicious, and there is also a selection of freshly baked cakes of the day. Da Fabio is hosting special Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve menus which are featured in our festive celebrations guide on P. 84.

We want to help bridge that gap for you.” More information: Tel. 952 816 678; www.redlinecompany.com

SPANISH DOCTOR HEADS INDIAN INITIATIVE Interplast Germany e.V. held a successful mission at the Mission Hospital in Mysore, southern India, this year. It was led by Dr. Alexander Aslani, head of plastic surgery at Hospital Quiron Málaga and owner of the Cirumed private practice in Marbella, who was assisted by Dr. Stefanie Hoffmeier, anaesthesiologist from the Murnau traumatology centre in Germany, and Jeannine Aslani, a theatre and wound care nurse. The focus of the trip was reconstructive surgery for burns and cleft-lip-palate, mostly, though not exclusively, for children. “New camps do always find somewhat uncertain preconditions so we had no idea what

to expect,” reports Dr. Aslani, “but retrospectively the conditions could impossibly have been any better. We received a lot of local support from the hospital, which generously made theatre facilities available for us.” Dr. Aslani intends to make a regular venue out of the Mission Hospital and, after 25 operations on this latest trip, they already have 30 lined up for the next visit with the help of resident surgeon Dr. Jayaram. Dr. Aslani´s cousin Daniela Hartmann, who been living in India for the last eight years, organised transport, accommodation and aftercare for the children. Dr. Aslani is looking for a second surgeon to accompany him on the next trip in August 2010. If you are would like to know more about this charity work or make a donation you can contact Dr. Aslani at his clinic: info@cirumed.es

LEGAL MATTERS

PROPERTY UPDATE Court grants first indemnifications for delayed commencement of construction

A

Barcelona court has condemned an insurance company to return the payments made in advance by a British couple, including legal interest, with regard to a development in Estepona that suffered a delay in the commencement of construction. This judgement is pioneer, taking into account that until now it has only been common to claim for a delay in the delivery of the property (i.e. a delay in the termination of the construction) but not for a delay in the commencement of the construction – as was the case in this specific judgement. The sums obtained by the claimants are quite generous, amounting to between €70,000 and €276,000. This case has set a judicial precedent, to the extent that people affected by similar delays in the commencement of construction can also have their money returned.

104

www.societylivingmagazine.com

Dimas Cuesta, senior lawyer at Lexland Solicitors in Marbella, reports that “to file a claim, buyers only have to provide the insurance policy received upon signing the purchase together with a document that certifies that the construction has not been started within the period agreed upon in the purchase contract”. The facts that lay at the basis of the judgement concern the purchase of a new-built home which is part of the Valle Romano development in Estepona by the company Comercio del Estrecho. These houses were offered by an intermediate to associates and employees of football clubs in the English Premier Football League, and suffered a delay of 12 months in the commencement of construction although, notes Lexland, “it is not necessary that the period of delay is that long to file a successful claim”. The buyers signed a contract that stated a date of commencement of the construction

around spring 2007. The claimant was able to provide documents proving that the clearing and cleaning of the plot had not been started until June 2008, 12 months later. The insurance company, Vitalicio Seguros, raised several prejudicial questions and consequently opposed the writ of execution. According to Lexland, during the Spanish real estate boom it was quite common to file claims for a delay in the termination and delivery of the property, but the economical crisis has recovered a possibility, foreseen but unexplored by the law, to claim for a delay in the commencement of the construction. Moreover, many buyers purchased apartments for a price that exceeds the current market value by 25 per cent. The buyers first acted against the developers to recover their initial payments, in most cases around 20 per cent of the total purchase price, plus legal interest. As they did not receive any response, they decided to make a claim on the insurance company. However, the buyers did not claim damages as they could not prove the loss of possible earnings for the delay in the use of the house. The relevant insurance policies are governed by Law 57/1968 dated 27 July guaranteeing the amounts paid in advance by the buyers before execution of the title deed. Furthermore, these insurance policies are qualified as guaranty contracts in accordance with the 1980 Spanish law relating to insurance contracts, which states that the insurance company has the obligation to indemnify the loss suffered by the buyer, within the limits of the contract and the law, in case of breach of the legal and contractual obligations imposed on the developer.
