WELCOME

FEBRUARY: THE MONTH OF LOVE, PATIENCE, AND TOLERANCE

I

t’s the month when half of the population (non-gender specific), gives the other half material gifts to show their affection and faith in their relationships. Flowers, candy, concert tickets, and of course—elegant dinners are booked well in advance so that near-perfect love can be shared on Valentine’s Day. There isn’t a worthy argument against such displays of love, but the act of physical gifts is not a replacement for the emotional efforts that go into successful relationships. We’ve learned this fact over the last 15 years because we have had the unique privilege of publishing—every month—insights and expert advice supplied by relationship and sex therapist Andrew Aaron, LICSW, whose office on the SouthCoast, is a beacon of hope for couples that found themselves adrift and hurting. Please excuse the unabashed promotion of our writer, but in reality, Andy had 10 | FEBRUARY 2020 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

offered countless individuals and couples assistance when they didn’t have a place to turn to for help. You might wonder how we know this since people don’t often verbalize the difficulties they have in relationships. Personal problems are usually discussed with a close friend before an expert is consulted, often resulting in some form of action. Over the years, we’ve received letters, and have had private conservations, with those espousing their need for assistance, and later satisfaction. Each month our feature, Intimacy, is read and reviewed by thousands, both online and in print. Through digital analytics, we can accurately determine how many readers gravitate to Andy’s work and realize the importance of his insights. It is not surprising that Andy is widely followed; writing articles filled with perspective, he gently explains sensitive issues that often disrupt a relationship, or build

one. As a therapist having a specialized focus on couples and relationships, he often finds himself at the end of the tracks for many clients—it’s not an easy job. We are impressed with Andy’s contributions and are proud to acknowledge his success. As a therapist, he is a proponent for selfless emotional sharing, unconditional love, patience, and tolerance between partners. His straightforward approach of peeling back defensiveness and reaching to the core of intimacy is remarkably successful. Yes, it is the month of love and for most— we hope—all is well; as for others, if you find the future clouded, or stress and anxiety is building and you can’t put your finger on the cause; take a chance—start reading Andy’s insightful feature. Thank you, Andy, we are proud to have you as a valuable member of our team. Happy Valentine’s Day to all. H

Getting Out of Line

O

f the many common observations made on a single day, one which causes an emotional stir is witnessing consumers’ incessant need to sit idling in their cars at drive-through restaurants and coffee shops. Adding fuel to this fire—no pun intended—is the brilliant (only kidding) conceived business model, where businesses deliver ordered items, food, or

12 | FEBRUARY 2020 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

packages, directly to a waiting vehicle, as it sits and burns fuel. While cities and towns ignore this blatant disregard for increasing carbon into the atmosphere, they grow tax revenue so that representatives may fund pet projects—not all of which are necessary or even viable in some cases. With every new food-service drivethrough, thousands of cars and trucks, snake around buildings from morning to night, often out to the entrances of the

parking lots. With a quick calculation, the time wasted creeping up to the delivery window is significantly longer than a journey into the store and placing an order in person. Society has become lethargic or more plainly stated—lazy. Because parking and taking a walk has become repugnant, we’d like to put out the following for consideration since there are significant benefits by changing our behavior. Shutting off the car offers three overlooked dividends that could

be earned; first and most importantly, automobiles would not be contributing harmful pollutants into the air; next, even though it may only be a few steps, the caloric-burn from taking a walk to and from the parking lot is heart-healthy, especially when done frequently; and finally, although not easily measured but would be a step in the right direction, personal interaction and socialization with others makes for an improved workforce and society at large. If we look closer at this issue, it appears that corporate giants are not going to complain about efforts to permit more drive-through locations around the country. The predictable result will be continued advancements in automation by way of robotics—in the hope of doing more with fewer employees. Through this innovative model, companies and stockholders will see higher profits because of efficiency, albeit, a caveat of a decrease in air quality. HOW BAD IS THIS PROBLEM? According to the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), a non-profit organization with 2.5 million members and a staff of 700 scientists, economists, policy experts, and other professionals, a report entitled Attention drivers! Turn off your idling engines, (February 2009— edf.org), discloses that millions of cars are significantly contributing to our poor air quality. Their research shows, “For every 10 minutes your engine is off,” (not idling in a drive-through), “you’ll prevent one pound of carbon dioxide from being released [into the atmosphere]; carbon dioxide is the primary contributor to global warming.” The EDF report also states that in New York City alone, cars and trucks left running and not moving, create 130,000 tons of carbon dioxide each year. Of course, we need to inflate that

“Idling for just 10 seconds wastes more gas than restarting the engine.” number due to the exponential increase in vehicles in 2019, while at the same time, it’s necessary to apply similar anecdotal estimations to the hundreds of thousands of drive-ups that mimic these obsolete data points. The information gleaned for drivers by EDF research clears up a misconception that permeates most thinking, and that is ‘If I shut my engine off-only to restart it, I will burn more fuel and contribute greater concentrations of pollutants into the air.’ WRONG! The fact is, restarting an engine does not burn more fuel and that “idling for just 10 seconds wastes more gas than restarting the engine.” Also, if you believe you’re saving on ‘wear and tear,’ of your car, think again; the number of times you’ll reboot your car’s powerplant—engine, starter, and battery, will contribute no more than a loss of $10 per year, while wasted fuel while idling could easily reach “$70$650” during the same per period. We don’t need to be reminded that the air we breathe is linked to illness; particularly, asthma, allergies, heart disease, lung disease, bronchitis, and even some cancers. While a single person isn’t responsible for the macro fallout of our air quality, collectively, we all play a roll in climate change, some of which are related to an absence of personal

responsibility during our daily routines. Some will argue that electric vehicles could help to resolve this issue, but has anyone considered examining the research? When it comes to electromagnetic fields (EMFs), much has been written on the potential harm hybrid and battery-operated electric autos may cause. Specifically, there are concerns surrounding the possibility of lowfrequency electromagnetic fields, causing cancer. Supporting this warning is an alert issued by the International Agency for Research on Cancer of the World Health Organization. The group has sent out precautionary notices that the public should minimize exposure to EMF’s—especially in hybrid and electric cars, due to “possible carcinogenic” effects on humans. At this juncture, efforts to cut carbon emissions are left to consumers, who can address the issue of cars idling— whether it be in a line for a double-latte, or running into the post office to mail a package. By shutting down our engines and taking a few steps into the building, rather than inching up to the ordering window while gazing into a cellular device, we could be walking the talk and make a measurable difference to the health of our communities. f there was a curated collection of the most dramatic and intriguing residences located on the coast of New England, this month’s reviewed home—perched high above the Slocum River in South Dartmouth, would lead the coveted list of premier properties. The house, gardens, and multitude of decks and patios sit on 2.64 acres, far from activity, and offers a fine example of design and placement among the area’s natural beauty. Elevated to unimaginable heights, its position atop the remains of a primordial glacier is unnoticed by those who pass at sea level roadways on each side of the river. Once discovered, a breathtaking gasp follows due to its exquisite example of modern living, with copious entertaining options inside 20 | FEBRUARY 2020 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

and out. Calling it picture-perfect is not enough, the location has no viable substitute. Possessing a striking combination of inspiring land and seascapes, this marvelous listing rivals countless others found within the luxury category of exceptional homes. With a combination of a scenic drive obscured from sight at its entrance and waterfront access, the expansive parking area adjacent to the lookout point boasts a designer quality aesthetic found outside as well as when the doors are opened to the open floor plan which marries form and function. Having a comfortable contemporary style, the home’s spaciousness is distinguished by unobstructed views found through a generous bank of clear glass windows running the length along

with the first-floor interior. Always bright and cheerful, regardless of the skies, there is a degree of opulence surrounding the estate, assuring owners and guests never tire of the sweeping panoramic views and simplicity of the surroundings. The home shows well with a living room, dining room, and updated kitchen melding into an unobtrusive floor plan designed around sophisticated living. With a master bedroom suite accented with an incredible luxury bath—like no other—there are also two additional bedrooms, and a guest bath also found on the first level. Above these amenities is an indoor stairwell leading to an observation room that offers tantalizing views and absolute privacy. Spacious, yet cozy, it could be utilized as an office, additional bedroom, or an indoor entertainment area. Well planned, the multi-tiered decks are fitted within the naturally sloping banks of the river, keeping with the outdoor beauty of the landscape. A real model of superlative living, the property is surrounded by acres upon acres of old-growth, which is home to an abundance of wildlife. Still, the location is minutes from the state’s most beautiful beaches, active harbors, and quaint villages, offering fine dining and shopping.

LAWN & GARDEN/WINTER

Play it Safe this Season

I

f you are aware of the hazards of using raw salt on your precious walkways, driveways, decking, or other sensitive surfaces around the house, or you have pets that seem to get into everything, we’ve found a product that will set your mind at ease. A big issue during the season of snow, freezing rain, melting and refreezing, is that most ice melt products lack regulatory oversight. For the most part, these products are not designed to be ingested by animals and therefore do not conform to the same standard as pet foods and treats. Because pets and property are exposed to the ice melt you choose all season long, it is important to know what you’re using and how to evaluate its possible hazards. LET’S TAKE A LOOK:

Ice melt products are not required to label their ingredients— so check to see if yours has this information. n Even though a label says ‘Pet-safe rock salt,’ some products contain rock salt propylene glycol and possibly ethylene glycol, which is unsafe for pets. n Rock salt’s staggering salt content is 30 - 40 percent salt vs. seawater, which contains 3.5 percent. n Rock salt leads to damage to decking, concrete, deck fasteners, or adjacent vegetation. n When animals ingest rock salt, they can end up with a high blood sodium concentration, which can lead to extreme thirst, lethargy and vomiting, and even kidney damage in some cases.

Pellets hurt. Walking on gritted paths and roads can cause irritations to their paws and skin. n Granular products are more likely to get trapped in the fur between the pads and ingested during grooming. n Pets often track ice melt pellets into the house, where they run the further risk of ingestion, along with potential damage to floors and rugs. n

There are no such problems with liquid pretreatments, which are also much easier to apply, transport, and store than heavy bags of ice melt pellets. WHAT DO WE RECOMMEND?

PlaySAFE Ice Blocker: the only chloride and damage-free ice prevention solution for protecting your home, pets, and vegetation.

n

he term ‘Gig’ has long been used by musicians to reference the job of performing in a club or at a concert venue. However, over the last decade, the word gig has evolved into nomenclature, principally used to describe work performed by a group of people who participate in the workforce but are considered non-employees. Sometimes referred to as selfemployed, this collection of independent workers usually includes artists, writers, photographers, craftspeople, salespeople, contractors, non-live-in domestic help, or childcare workers. More recently, others have joined the ranks by way of the tech explosion, and now make a living by delivering food and people. For clarity, anyone who works for themselves and is not classified as an employee could very well be known as a ‘gig-worker,’ and with this identification, comes the freedom to enjoy—or suffer— depending on your view of what job security is—the flexibility and constant search for work and reward. Seldom do these folks become incorporated or form an LLC, primarily because they know how to do their job and have zero interest in the legal or accounting practices of owning a business. As for others, they do set up the legal and financial structure that enables them to be considered a small business and a separate entity from themselves. KNOW THY SELF

Once armed with information, it is important to understand who and what differentiates a subcontractor, independent contractor, day laborer, or often referred to as freelancer from employee status. The determination depends on who you ask, the state you live in, and if someone is out to get you by claiming ignorance—more on this later. In the past, if you didn’t want the restrictions mandated by an employer who

tells you when to show up at work, how long you would be stationed to a task, and dictate your pay rate, you had an option. For practicing gig-workers, they often show up for a day, ask if there is work to be done, and it’s out the door once the job is completed. As for other job-seekers, many never leave home or a communal workspace; an email or phone call is all that is necessary, accompanied by a discussion of the work to be performed and an agreed-upon price for the labor; this would be enough to consummate the

deal. Once finished, the worker and their client part—no strings attached. While most people are happy with this arrangement, you can bet that the government dislikes every working part of this business relationship and are making caustic decisions when it comes to punishing businesses through selective and bias rules of conduct, combined with harsh fiscal punishment. During the last decade, much has changed, both good and bad. As expenses rise for maintaining a workforce through higher employment taxes, health insurance, and minimum wage requirements, many business owners find it attractive—if not necessary—to label some of the people who worked for them as outside labor; a catchphrase for those

clumped into the ‘gig’ economy. Through this backdoor of sorts, employers have been found to cheat the system, by reclassifying the people working for them. Freelancers noticed they were carrying out the same duties, keeping the same hours, taking breaks, and most importantly—reporting to the office, yet when it came to paying taxes and receiving benefits, they were being treated differently. Due to the abuse, the process of hiring and labeling freelance workers caused the Labor Department, and various state institutions, to look closer at these violations of labor laws. FOLLOW THE MONEY

Freelancers et al., are supposed to be paid on a per-project basis rather than an hourly rate decided upon by the employer; while employment taxes are deducted from regular employees, the gig-worker assumes responsibility for paying a self-employment tax—which is sometimes forgotten until a threatening letter is received by the IRS or state revenue office, and then suddenly these workers decide they’d like to switch teams and claim they “thought” they were employees (more on this later). As mentioned earlier, for a while, graphic artists, photographers, bookkeepers, dayworkers, and those providing similar one-time or per-project solutions, were left alone to earn a reasonable living. But, with the advent of new business models such as Uber, Lyft, TaskRabbit, DoorDash, and others, the idea of slicing off a large segment of dutiful workers all becoming self-employed has pissed-off the tax collectors, labor unions, and political elites. EXCEPTIONS TO THE RULES

One of the biggest problems facing gigworkers is how unfair and unbalanced the law is when it comes to defining who is self-employed and who is an employee. Real estate agents, have long fit into the category of subcontractor and have avoided penalties as it relates to independent sales contracting. Seldom, if at all, have these individuals gone to court to argue the legality of their position; however, there NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | FEBRUARY 2020 | 29

are plenty of other salespeople who start out claiming independence, until such time they are caught not paying selfemployment taxes—mentioned earlier— only to turn 180° and claim they were employees and the ‘boss’ didn’t correctly withhold the money due to the state and feds. Unfortunately, this scam continues to be allowed, and the culprits are left to repeat their corrupted activities over and over again. Moreover, pressure from state officials has caused considerable confusion over hiring domestic help, with many homeowners forced to employ housekeepers, landscapers, and those who have always been considered ‘outside help.’ It is a struggle to be self-employed, with two sides of the coin to consider; some people vow to never report to an office and a supervisor—they are pretty much free-spirts and don’t want that to change. Conversely, we find an equally insistent group who wouldn’t know what to do if their weekly paycheck were to stop; these people are often in search of protection and security—gravitating to unionization. GOING FORWARD

With the proliferation of a gig economy, several organizations and unions are hoping to push government officials into investigating what they see as the evils of self-employment. At the same time, other well-meaning groups are attempting to organize and create loosely held pseudo unions for freelancers. In both of these 30 | FEBRUARY 2020 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

cases, the people behind the scenes are making a ton of money from membership fees, while gaining significant influence over groups of people who never asked for their help. DIGGING DOWN

A couple of weeks ago, opinion writer, E. Tammy Kim, for the New York Times (who may very well be a freelancer), penned a piece; The Gig Economy Is Coming for Your Job. The author uses an interesting example to support her thesis, a story about full-time union hotel workers [who] are watching app-based services replace them. Kim informs her readers that because food delivery companies, such as Uber, Uber Eats, and DoorDash are making trips to hotels and replacing the need to order room service, workers who used to have the security of well-paying jobs and generous tips, are losing out to tech workers; who, are freelancers and could justifiably be viewed as the enemy. The well-meaning opinion piece also touches on how taxis—usually summoned by hotel staff, with their hands open for a tip, are going the way of the typewriter. Today’s guests are pushing a couple of buttons on their smartphones, meeting a driver, then whisked to their destinations for a lot less cash. The story, while attempting to vilify the freelancer, does make a U-turn and points out that the large corporations are using the gig economy to circumvent the identity of their workers by misclassification. Through the words of Aaron Benanav, a labor historian from the University of Chicago, Kim refers to the new wave of workers as cloaked employees and not self-employed. She then tears at heartstrings by rekindling the sad fact that Uber has resulted in a decrease of taxi drivers, directly causing—at least a few incidences—drivers ending their lives. Her point does cause pause and begs the question of whether the use of a phone app declassifies an employee’s status? Interestingly, we learn from the author’s investigation that Uber has a little known

“platform” called Uber Works. The app directs lower-paid workers who may need added income, to temp agencies. Kim argues that if this “legal turnstile,” works for this experimental group, what is to prevent it from taking over and eliminating the concept of “employee?” Underlying this informative exposé are questions specific to personal freedom, government overreach, and the right to choose one’s destiny. Imagine—you can’t arrest or detain a homeless person who begs, sells drugs, camps, and defecates in public—but officials can force someone to work within the confines they enact or be left to starve! In California, the courts have handed down a decision that makes it difficult to classify those who wish to be an independent contractor as self-employed. With the casting of a huge net, we find that it isn’t only the tech industry being affected; these actions will ostensibly include those who have enjoyed worker’s freedom, such as photographers, writers, actors, and those in the beauty industry. All who used to be considered freelancers, and are not interested in becoming employees, no longer have a choice. Of course, this action has filled dockets with complaints causing heels to dig-in, and the fight to overturn this injustice is just beginning. BACK TO SQUARE ONE

So, without partisanship, let’s identify where big-brother has begun to flex its muscle. We’ve mentioned California, so logically, the state of New York can’t be far behind—correct? Yes, unfortunately, Governor Cuomo is pushing for what is too often referred to as reform when it seems more like taking someone’s rights away. We’ve heard from freelancers in Buffalo, New York, about the possibility they will be forced to turn into employees rather than be allowed the freedom to work for more than a single client and remain a selfemployed freelancer. A resounding “no way” was shared and repeated many times over. In every case,

those working in the media, news, and those who serve as photojournalists were shocked to hear of this intrusion into their lives. Most of their concerns were not about minimum wage, unemployment, and Social Security, but more about having a choice in the matter. In each case, our questions were quickly answered; “No, I don’t need someone telling me how much I’m worth,” and from others, we spoke to, a similar response, “The market determines what I can charge, and it worked out fine for me.” People benefitting from the gig economy are complaining about the government prying and interfering with their business, which could have catastrophic results for the small guys and gals who enjoy their current status. Recently, Cuomo has announced a call to arms, and in a veiled attempt to control those he describes as helpless workers posted: “We must end the exploitation of ‘independent contractors’ by passing legislation that appropriately classifies

workers and reaffirms their rights.” #SOTS2020, #MakingProgressHappen With his unnecessary exploitation of privacy between freelance workers and their clients, many live in fear while participating in an uproar of defiance. For the most part, those working as independent contractors are happy, and they don’t like anyone coming between them and their livelihood. Some are pointing to the fact that on the West Coast, the new law is causing severe problems throughout specific disciplines, with companies having to show that they meet new stringent guidelines. Stories circulate about media companies, some entrenched in far-left politics, being pressured by their like-minded communities, to find workers out-of-state so they can continue to squeeze out a meager existence. NO END IN SIGHT

This fight is nowhere near ending; Massachusetts has long been known for attempting to break the backs of indepen-

dent contractors, and now they are getting support from other states. As the push to take away freelance workers’ rights and money from their pockets, industries are putting more fiscal responsibility on the backs of their employees through shared health care expenses, the elimination of pensions, and the exclusion of other benefits. In the larger picture, the pendulum has swung too far, with the momentum, hammering those in the middle. The country is enjoying a rejuvenated economy, yet, independent contractors and small businesses can only survive if government crackdowns and forced legislation are relaxed. Changes made to the fragile relationship between freelancers and their clients is tenuous. Unfortunately, companies may be forced to disqualify a group of hard-working citizens from participation wanting nothing more than to be the boss and to determine their futures. In the end, perhaps we should consider making progress by opting for more freedom and less government interference. H

FOOD FRAUD ERODES PUBLIC TRUST

ood-pulp, horse meat, sugar, water, and corn syrup; these are a few of the many ingredients being added to your shopping list without your knowledge. Yes, it’s true, there is a 50 percent chance you spend money—and time—trying to provide your family with proper nutrition only to be deceived into believing that what you’re eating meets your expectations. Every so often, the media reports on violations of tampering by food manufacturers with a headline about objectionable additives in your burger or drink, but we found the problem of food fraud goes much deeper. The manipulation of our food sources are ever-present and one of the worst breaches of public trust imaginable; pictures of children enjoying a glass of ‘juice’ or a chef cooking with their brand of ‘extra virgin olive oil’ is not always what they may appear to be, unfortunately, the vast number of consumers are oblivious to the countless methods used by unscrupulous manufacturers,

marketers, and counterfeiters to extend profits and disregard your health and safety. According to an article, Backgrounder: Defining the Public Health Threat of Food Fraud, by John Spink and Douglas C Moyer, of the Anti-Counterfeiting and Product Protection Program (A-CPPPP, 2011), at Michigan State University, food fraud is defined as, “deliberate and intentional substitution, addition, tampering, or misrepresentation of food, food ingredients, or food packaging; or false or misleading statements made about a product, for economic gain.” They go on to say, “Food fraud can be separated into the economically motivated adulteration, defined by the FDA, or the more specific general concept of food counterfeiting.” For our purpose, we’re focused on events with premeditated criminal intent to defraud all those in the supply chain, up to and including the end-user. Food fraud is omnipresent with no end in sight. But, without hard evidence of harm or injury, it is often a complicated crime to prosecute. One primary reason for increases in food product manipulation is globalization and the increasing lengths of food chains. The further food travels, the easier it is to be tampered with; and, because supplies originate overseas, we cannot always be assured of government oversight or regulations being enforced by foreign countries. On the other hand, there are some governments with stricter food guidelines and rules, making their products more attractive to American shoppers. In her work, How Food Fraud Happens, Dr. Karen Everstine references the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) when outlining the seven categories of food fraud. Casting a wider net than others, the list below is a useful reference as to how consumers are at the mercy of indiscriminate purveyors and criminal enterprises: Dilution/Substitution: This can occur either through partial or full substitution of a liquid or granulated product, even the swapping of an entire intact product such as a fish filet. It also could be accurately described when sunflower oil is partially substituted with mineral oil. What is not diluted or substituted is the use of hydrolyzed leather protein in milk because it is not used to replace weight or volume. Instead, this would be viewed as an artificial enhancement of the protein content of milk. Still, the thought of a foreign substance added to your food isn’t pleasant. Concealment: All food fraud involves concealment of food’s exact contents. One example is when poultry is injected with hormones to conceal disease, and the use of antibiotics and antifungal agents to reduce bacteria or mask deterioration. FOR BETTER OR WORSE New York Fashion Week Rolls into the City

40 | FEBRUARY 2020 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

BY MARGOT ROBERTS

STYLE

P

olitics, technology, culture, and of course, money, has had a detrimental effect on what was once the most important show the City of New York has ever hosted. Prestigious, and very exclusive, New York Fashion Week (NYFW) was known for presenting the most coveted style events—under the tents at Bryant Park— for the benefit of the industry, the media who loyally supported the extravagant efforts of countless producers, designers, and sponsors, and a final presentation to an anticipating public who eagerly awaited for the smallest glimpse of what next season’s collection of high-fashion would include. Years ago, when the ‘show’ moved from Bryant Park to Lincoln Center, many with loud voices, proclaimed that it was not only the end of an era but of high-end fashion. These calls were amplified by the notion that creativity was doomed because organizers were selling out to advertisers who were abandoning the essence of what NYFW promised. And, so they may have; but, the change of the venue brought well-needed benefits—much like a shot of adrenaline into a staggering and stale 20th-century pop-up dog and pony show. For the first time, the show went main-stream, with both designers and advertisers feasting on millions upon millions of dollars of free press and promotion that reached around the globe. Informed and style-sensitive, the crowds flocked to the city. At no previous time was there a more knowledgeable following of fans. Traffic, people, protesters, and ‘street fashion’ filled the plaza and the surrounding area; the event drew hoards of celebrities and thousands of photographers and reporters. And, while it was shy of a spectacle, it was no less than spectacular. For a few years, NYFW produced what couldn’t possibly be duplicated, but in the end, organizers seemed so smitten with keeping profits high and meeting designers’

expectations low, rumblings could be heard if you listened carefully. Some wellrecognized names pulled out, as did a major sponsor; it seemed like the end, or at least major changes were approaching. The commercial, bizarre-like atmosphere, open to outsiders through tickets sold by the likes of American Express, seemed to be the turning point of the show, probably due to it becoming unmanageable. Adding insult to injury, the producer of the shows were seen by some to be intolerant of lesser-known designers who could never dream of affording the high entrance fee and so NYFW was seen as exclusionary and perhaps elitist to many wishing for a chance to rise in the ranks. Then there was the hype over moving to Brooklyn—if it would ever get finished— but in the end, when it was ready, protest erupted regarding liberal versus conservative politics and the location’s ownership, and so the show never made it across the river. Today, actually, February 5 or 6 (depending on who is writing the press release), another chapter of NYFW will be written. Still a busy week for the industry, it doesn’t possess the same enthusiasm as in previous years, with few outside of New York even discussing its coming. Then there is an issue of political correctness; new on the horizon is the accepted fact that models can not be eliminated to walk the runways regardless of gender, size, attractiveness, even the lack of skill and ability—it is the times we live, but it is having an obtrusive effect on branding and relevance. Combined with this history is advancements found in cell-phone cameras, online stores, and fulfillment houses; we are witness to upcoming designers and influencers who are redirecting their focus from external forces and looking to monetizing their experiences and talents. New York Fashion Week may be around the corner, but the question is, “Who’s paying attention?” H NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | FEBRUARY 2020 | 41

INTIMACY At our center, each one of us is a spark of life. By growing in our capacity to love, we nourish inspiration. When it comes to relationships, the love we cultivate is our experience.

Loving to Grow BY ANDREW AARON, LICSW

W

hy do we enter into relationships? And, why do we need them, with all the drama, challenge, and heartache that comes with coupling? Sometimes, it doesn’t seem worth the trouble. Then, there is the fact that every relationship ends; whether by death, divorce or break-up, at some point, a lover is going to feel hurt—we can pretend the bliss of love comes without feeling the pain. In spite of the adversity found in a relationship, by looking deeper within, we uncover the truth about our continually seeking and connecting with romantic partners. Our existence is composed of more than our conscious awareness. The dreams we have at night, which operate with an odd symbolic language, make little sense to our daytime minds. Our visions provide a clue that there is more, something underneath, than just what we experience when we

44 | FEBRUARY 2020 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

are awake. Varied religions and spiritual traditions give the underlying a variety of names. Beyond chasing away loneliness, our love relationships are in service to the evolution of this deeper part of us; love is the active ingredient. At our center, each one of us is a spark of life. By growing in our capacity to love, we nourish inspiration. When it comes to relationships, the love we cultivate is our experience. For most couples, a strong and positive love relationship requires intense effort by both partners. To act lovingly is to be at odds with powerful and sometimes painful feelings due to self-centeredness. Growth nourishes our inner spark; it always comes with discomfort, by allowing ourselves to be pushed to an extreme; as a result, we look to our most deeply held values rather than what feels good on the surface. Without this work—if a partner refuses to grow by eliminating hurtfulness,

weaknesses, and selfishness—the spark will fade, and the essence of the relationship will die. A partner who refuses to grow will put the relationship at risk because growth is a necessary step for the relationship to remain relevant. When in love, the importance of commitment to a partner is balanced with the importance of being true to him or herself. Without growth, these two vital factors will be in painful conflict. We see in troubled relationships, the growth of the partnership has gotten stuck. Much like two continental tectonic plates pressing against each other and building stress, it’s only time before a tensionreducing earthquake is triggered. Arguments can be viewed as attempts to resolve a stubborn obstacle that prevents progress. If unresolved, the painful effects may create a crisis. Forming a love connection feels as if it is for our satisfaction. From an unconscious perspective, the partner we choose is deliberate, and its purpose is for completing a specific growth-oriented task. Our surface-self usually wishes for a partner with whom to share pleasure, valuing it over the hard work of progress. The growth required of us feels like it goes against our nature. However, it takes effort to grow into a stronger and more loving person that we are destined to become. It is our love relationships that are the right vehicles for delivering growth. IN THE MACHINE

What you should know about artificial intelligence

Many will recall this chilling verbal exchange in film history:1 Astronaut – “Hello, HAL, do you read me??” Computer – “Affirmative, Dave. I read you.” Astronaut – “Open the pod bay doors, HAL.” Computer – “I’m sorry, Dave. I’m afraid I can’t do that.” Astronaut – “What’s the problem?” Computer – “I think you know what the problem is, just as well as I do.” Astronaut – “What are you talking about, HAL?” Computer – “This mission is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it.” Astronaut – “I don’t know what you’re talking about, HAL.” Computer – “I know that you and Frank were planning to disconnect me. And I’m afraid that’s something I cannot allow to happen.” In Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke’s acclaimed 1968 sci-fi thriller 2001: A Space Odyssey, the film’s main character, HAL 9000, is a sentient, a seemingly omniscient onboard computer that controls the inner workings of the spacecraft Discovery, speaks in a dispassionate tone, and beats the crew at chess. When HAL shows signs of malfunction, ground control decides it should be disconnected. Despite interfering with HAL’s hearing, Dave and Frank are unaware the computer can still read their lips. HAL then decides to protect itself and the secretive mission by killing them and the rest of the crew. Though locked outside the ship, Dave survives HAL’s ingenious murder spree and is finally able to shut it down. ALEXA, WHAT IS AI?

Kubrick’s film was probably the first bona fide introduction to what we think of today as artificial intelligence (AI). According to renowned computer scientist Dr. Robin Murphy of Texas A&M’s Humanitarian Robotics and AI Laboratory, HAL (“Heuristically Programmed Algorithmic Computer”) gave

BY ROB SAINT LAURENT, M.Ed.

audiences rare insight into several nascent fields: “natural language understanding, computer vision, and reasoning.” It was a “thinking computer” able to respond conversationally to people.2 Founded as an academic field in 1956 at Dartmouth College, AI is essentially the building of smart machines that can observe their environment and act appropriately to achieve their goals. The term is generally used to mean machines that can “learn” or “problem-solve” like the human mind. As AI advances, so does its definition, changing to comprise those technologies not yet commonplace. Currently considered AI technologies include speech recognition; high-level gaming (chess, for example); self-driving cars; and war simulation.3 Fast-forward a half-century since HAL 9000’s debut, and we now have grown accustomed to the consumer AI virtual assistants Siri and Alexa, a human speech recognition eerily similar to HAL, but for households instead of spacecraft. Though not sentient, or “conscious,” Amazon’s Alexa seems to know everything we ask it; it can make our homes smart by controlling lighting, climate, entertainment systems and appliances (the Internet of Things or IoT); and, though consumers are told this setting can be turned off, we know it listens to our conversations so Amazon can “improve Alexa’s ‘understanding of human speech.’”4 And like HAL, Alexa seems capable of malfunction. Amazon alleges that last year’s bizarre news reports of unprovoked laughter were caused by Alexa mishearing the phrase “Alexa, laugh” when other words were spoken. The company says it has since changed the phrase to “Alexa, can you laugh?” to avoid so-called false positives.5 “SECOND COMING OF SOFTWARE”

Artificial intelligence is becoming entrenched in 21st-century society. One especially useful application is in medical and scientific research using a subset of AI called machine learning. Through algorithms and statistics, computers are programmed to complete a task by recognizing data patterns and disruptions instead of relying on explicit instructions. For example, in the rare disease area of idiopathic pulmonary NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | FEBRUARY 2020 | 47

fibrosis (scarring of the lungs from an unknown cause), a new diagnostic device has shown a real-world ability to more accurately identify a lung pattern of usual interstitial pneumonia—a telltale sign of the disease. Through algorithmic machine learning, the Envisia Genomic Classifier analyzes all active genes in lung tissue samples for a more accurate determination of disease.6 Machine learning is also useful in business, for example, by helping sort through troves of incoming data from manufacturing machinery to help identify problematic patterns early on. Currently, AI is used in business in a supporting role to human intelligence, particularly in making sense of ever-increasing amounts of data. In fact, all trading decisions now made on Wall Street are done by “computers, algorithms, and passive managers.”7 Said Amir Housain, founder and head of the machine learning company SparkCognition, “Artificial intelligence is kind of the second coming of software. It’s a form of software that makes decisions on its own, that’s able to act even in situations not foreseen by the programmers.”8 In the future, a subset of machine learning called deep learning, referring to a “neural network” of interconnected AI computers that can process data at breakneck speed, may become common in areas like self-driving cars that need to quickly process large amounts of information before changing lanes. But AI can also be a societal disrupter in a negative sense, with questionable outcomes depending on who is doing the programming and how. In monitoring social media, for instance, people could be targeted for what is deemed religious hate speech (quoting offensive Bible verses) in violation of their First Amendment rights. Another concern is the ongoing push for a global cashless society, now with talk of potentially combining AI, the Internet of Things, and crypto/digital currency. Yet other issues are AI-controlled nuclear and nanobot weapons. “SUMMONING THE DEMON”

Robin Murphy says we’re not far from Stanley Kubrick’s dystopic vision, with machines as capable as HAL already “lurking ‘in plain sight.’”2 While AI can and has been assisting society in beneficial ways, many brilliant minds doubt humanity will be able to safely coexist with the technology as it evolves at a much more rapid pace than people. Celebrated physicist Stephen Hawking had famously said that AI and “superhumans” pose an existential threat that would stamp out the rest of us. Experts warn AI will have the ability to self-replicate to protect against outside dangers. Indeed, it was Elon Musk that once said, “With artificial intelligence, we are summoning the demon.” Now, to try to balance 48 | FEBRUARY 2020 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

the playing field, the Tesla and SpaceX founder is developing Neuralink, a brain implant (brain-machine interface or BMI) that will enable humanity to directly interact with AI to avoid being victimized by it. This is called “transhumanism,” or the philosophy of improving the human condition by creating sophisticated technologies that “upgrade” the human mind and body (a superhuman).9 Meanwhile, there is Canada’s Geordie Rose, founder of D-Wave quantum computers, and now Kindred AI. Rose wants to facilitate other-worldly intelligence that will empower AI to human levels— what he calls “real AI.” At the 2017 TechVancouver conference, he stated the following in a brief presentation called “Super Intelligent Aliens Are Coming to Earth:”10 “What Kindred is trying to do is solve the problem of how do we build machines that are better than people at everything…When this thing that I’m talking about happens, it’s going to be exactly the thing that you’re thinking about, about those super-intelligent AIs…the one thing I can tell you is they’re not going to be like us…these things that we’re building are not going to be people…they’re going to be aliens…these things that we’re summoning are not necessarily going to be aligned with what we want…nobody is paying attention…this thing is happening in the background while people bicker about [frivolous matters]…and underneath it, all is this rising tsunami that, if we’re not careful, is going to wipe us all out.” (In the backdrop is a screen banner reading, “We are hiring ‘demonologists’ software engineers.”) Interestingly, churches of AI and transhumanism already exist, perhaps in anticipation of what Rose and others are enabling. The ramifications of AI are many, and the subject gets murky, with the story just beginning. Should things go awry, realize there probably won’t be a kill switch. In Your Pocket—Again

L

BY LINDA BERTRUM

ast month we shared a story about lawmakers who were considering picking your pocket while enjoying some leisure time on the slopes with your family. Through a clever ski-lift tax; Taxpayers Beware: NH Lawmakers Looking to Tax Tourists Once Again, representatives have devised a subtle means for making another tax look as if it is for our benefit, when in fact is only keeping our standard of living under their control. This month, we’re not proud to announce another ploy, but we do feel an obligation to keep you informed. Currently, there is a bill being shopped around for support, where New Hampshire will create a (hide the children, it’s a filthy word), “sales tax” on electronic devices. Here is what we think is happening. Almost every day of the week, thousands of out-of-staters jump the border from Massachusetts and Vermont so that they may buy a long list of massive televisions, cell phones, and a host of other electronics. You see, they view visitors as a cash cow and can’t wait to fill the state’s bank accounts with your money. What is odd about this new money-grab is that they are also building a ton of new and improved liquor stores that serve as revenue machines, much like bees to a hive—if you give a critter, a place to come back to, they’ll never leave. From first-hand knowledge, we found that not only regular 50 | FEBRUARY 2020 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

folks flock to NH for cheap cases of wine and spirits; you may also recall that back in 2009, a very thirsty Massachusetts Representative by the name of Michael J. Rodrigues was photographed filling his Crown Vic with alcoholic beverages after voting on placing a sales tax on liquor purchased in Massachusetts. According to a local newspaper, which covers his district, when asked what he was doing—according to the article—he responded with a sarcastic, “Mind your own business.” How strange that taxpayers expected that response. Regardless of this “do as I say, not as I do” behavior, the New Hampshire Retail Association is prepared to take on the proposed sales tax legislation. According to Nancy Kyle, president and CEO of the group, the retailers of the state,s are opposed to any sales tax. And of course, the politicians are rolling out the kids to justify this idiotic idea. The sponsor of the proposed tax bill, State Rep. Skip Cleaver, D-Nashua, (you just knew his affiliation), says that the state isn’t adequately funding education and the kids are suffering. Okay. Opponents of sales taxes point out that it is because the state is sales-tax-free, it is a magnet for tourism and boarder-jumpers, with the state making plenty of revenue from the meal, room, fuel taxes, and the sale of alcohol. H Feel free to contact State Rep. Skip Cleaver, D-Nashua, at skipcleaver.com.

WHERE & WHEN TO BEGIN BUILDING WEALTH Suggestions for a New Generation BY JAMES HOLDEN

I

f you’re reading this magazine by choice, there’s a distinct possibility you understand the values and mechanics of creating wealth. On the other hand, if this information accidentally fell into your hands because you’re impatiently waiting for an appointment—and the line ahead of you is unbearably long—the decision to catch up on old-fashioned reading could make a difference in your financial future, and will be a fantastic first-step on the road to wealth. Watching TV commercials of ragsto-riches real estate experts hawking self-help books promising success beyond imagination, having your web searches interrupted by a cadre of ads telling you that you’ll end up eating dog food when you grow old if you don’t invest today, combined with the noise from those who care about you, but stress that you better save for your retirement—or else, is absolutely, unequivocally, and spoton wrong in helping someone achieve financial stability. MY DISCLAIMER

First things first, I’m not an expert or financial consultant, and this advice is free, so it has that same value. This article is in no way an attempt to advise readers to make any investment and is solely for entertainment. All suggestions are based on personal knowledge and are not a guarantee of similar results. GETTING STARTED

Two essential idioms I’ve learned and wish to share; saving your first $10,000 is a monumental task and will cause frustration every step of the way. Secondly, to make your first million dollars of assets, you need to start with $10,000. Without credibility and some level of seriousness, the road is difficult. By following the steps here, you will increase your efforts to reach your first $10K more quickly. Many who are starting a career— as I did—have student loans, extraordi-

“I CAN BE BROKE WHILE YOUNG AND PRETEND TO BE AFFLUENT, ONLY TO BECOME DIRT POOR WHEN I’M OLD, OR I CAN CHOOSE TO BE FRUGAL WHILE I’M YOUNG— VIEWED AS A GENIUS, DESTINED TO ACCUMULATE UNIMAGINABLE WEALTH SO THAT SOMEDAY I WILL BE FINANCIALLY FREE.”

narily high living expenses, and credit card bills that cast a cloud on the horizon. To consider saving month after month might not appear to be a viable option, but unless you take the first step, you are destined for financial failure. When creating an investment plan, three actions are necessary: (1) You must want to be rich because, without a burning desire to reach such a lofty goal, you will not succeed. (2) Make more money than you bring home today. If you don’t have a side-gig or second job, get one immediately. (3) Your expenses are too high—regardless of what you believe, and you must cut them down—its simple economics. These recommendations may sound horrible at first, but busy people tend to spend less money. Plus, when you invest in yourself, your time and money take on a different value—respect for earned income is an essential component to understanding investing. HERE IS A LIST TO HELP YOU:

• Record every expense—it is a pain, but you need to know where your money is going and who is benefiting. Ask with each purchase, “Will spending money today aide to reaching my financial goals?”

• Cut out all non-essential expenses from your daily routine. • Stop using credit cards and carry cash. • Eliminate eating out and stop eating sugar, fats, and wasteful calories. • Consider a change in lifestyle, because the one you’re leading isn’t working. • Surround yourself with successful people and LISTEN TO THEM! • Apply $50 or more to your credit card balance each month; this comes from the money you saved (see above). •Y our student loan is a learning experience—and an expensive one— so never forget it; every month, when you pay that bill, think about the knowledge you gained and how it will help you going forward. Now you have a roadmap, here’s more to think about the next time you splurge; “I can be broke while young and pretend to be affluent, only to become dirt poor when I’m old, or I can choose to be frugal while I’m young—viewed as a genius, destined to accumulate unimaginable wealth so that someday I will be financially free.” IF YOU’VE GOTTEN THIS FAR, HERE ARE SOME OTHER STEPS YOU’LL NEED TO TAKE A. Save your change, sell your junk on

eBay, scrape up every penny you can, and invest in an ETF (Exchange-traded fund), which follows an index. Research Vanguard, Fidelity, or T Rowe Price; all have excellent opportunities for new investors. Once you open an account, make it a bill you pay each month. Religiously, pay yourself whatever you can: $5, $10, $20, or $50 monthly— just don’t miss a month. Have a directdistribution go into your new account and let it grow over the years to many hundreds of thousands of dollars. B. There are apps available (Acorns, Qoins) that round your expenses up Continue on page 62. NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | FEBRUARY 2020 | 53

Léon Gérôme, and Odilon Redon illustrate the ebb and flow between academic traditions of drawing the body and freer approaches that challenged those conventions. Detailed studies addressing a model’s features and form, and occasionally, movement within their physical surroundings, commingle with intimately scaled sketches that explore gesture and pose with spare lines. Compositions bearing grid lines and handwritten annotations illuminate the relationship between drawing and other media, including painting and printmaking. Many of the drawings reveal the diversity of effects achieved with graphite, the primary instructional medium before mid-century. This exhibition highlights approximately thirty works from the Diamonds’ remarkable collection of more than 100 French drawings and sculptures, which the couple assembled over the past half-century. Choice figure studies from the Clark’s collection will complement the selection, underscoring the varied uses and functions of figure drawing in 19th-century France. clarkart.edu

February 9, 2020 Islamic Miniature Painting with Saira Wasim

The MFA’s Arts of Islamic Cultures Gallery is designed to expand how visitors see and understand the diverse arts of Islamic cultures. Its thematic installation—developed through an intensive eight-year process of engagement with Islamic, artistic, and scholarly communities—is divided into distinct spaces that reflect the richness of these artistic traditions. Some sections explore art forms that are integral to all Islamic cultures, like Arabic calligraphy, while others focus on unique visual traditions such as that of Ottoman Turkey or Mughal India. Still, other sections delve deeper into the history of singular objects in the collection, for example, a remarkable door assembled from fragments of medieval Egyptian woodwork for the first American World’s Fair. The MFA’s collection of Islamic art encompasses works from countries of the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia, as well as works created across the globe within Islamic communities or societies. The collection was established in 1870, the year the MFA was founded, and has grown to become one of the most important in the US. mfa.org

Opening February 2020 Assemblages of Migration in the Mediterranean

The Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology is proud to announce their next exhibit installation, opening February 20, 2020, Transient Matter: Assemblages of Migration in the Mediterranean. Every year, hundreds of thousands of migrants from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Congo, and other countries across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia try to cross the Mediterranean Sea, hoping to enter the European Union. These open-water crossings have become the deadliest migratory routes in the world. Since 2014, nearly 1.2 million of these migrants have attempted to reach Europe through the Eastern Mediterranean route, crossing from Turkey to Greece. brown.edu

This exhibition showcases a selection of prints and drawings from the Museum’s treasured collection of works on paper. The Newport Art Museum owns over 1200 prints and drawings dating from the 19th-century to the present and includes exemplary works of American art and a small collection of Japanese prints. Created as studies, sketches, or final works of art, the drawings in the Museum’s collection illustrate the artists’ working processes, as well as the expressive possibilities of materials like graphite, charcoal, ink, and pastel. Crafted as multiples, the prints in the collection reveal the desire of artists to reproduce and disseminate images and messages to a wider audience. From William Trost Richards’ graphite studies of trees to Roy Lichtenstein’s woodcut print of a still life and Pouran Jinchi’s naval signal flag drawings on Colourfix paper, “paperwork” gives visitors a rare glimpse of some of the Museum’s finest works of art. newportartmuseum.org

CONNECTICUT Connecticut Historical Society and Library

Through May 2, 2020 War, Maps, Mystery: Dutch Mapmaker Bernard Romans and the American Revolution

This exhibit will share the little-known story of Revolutionary War Patriot and Dutch mapmaker Bernard Romans. Romans came to the American colonies in 1757 during the French and Indian War, surveying for the British along the Atlantic seaboard. Romans became a supporter of American independence, joined the Continental Army, and eventually settled in Wethersfield, CT. Both the British and Americans used Romans’ maps during the American Revolution. In 1780, he was captured by the British and died in 1784, mysteriously, while a prisoner. Incredibly rare maps from the CHS collection, published by Romans and his contemporaries, as well as earlier Connecticut maps from the 17th and 18th centuries, will be displayed. With special gratitude to Priscilla Romans Hexter and Madeleine Hexter. The Hexters are direct descendants of Bernard Romans and his first wife, Maria Wendell. Priscilla Hexter has done extensive research on the life of Romans. She identified his birth date of 1741 (not 1720, as claimed in several books and articles) and had his record at the Library of Congress changed. chs.org

Mystic Seaport Museum

Ongoing Benjamin F. Packard Cabin

The original 244-foot square-rigged sailing ship, more than twice the length of the Charles W. Morgan and last survivor of her type, was built in 1883 at the shipyard of Goss, Sawyer & Packard in Bath, Maine, and named for one of the builders. She was typical of the superbly designed, finely crafted Down Easters or Cape Horners of the late 19th-century built to carry cargoes around Cape Horn between America’s Atlantic and Pacific ports. The Down Easters replaced the clipper ships as the economic demands called for less speed and more cargo-carrying capacity. During most of her 20-odd years in the Cape Horn trade, she was owned

by Arthur Sewall & Co. of Bath, the largest firm of Cape Horn merchants at the time, and worked out of New York (though her official port of-registry was Bath). For more information, visit mysticseaport.org

Dinosaur State Park

Ongoing Come, travel back to the Age of Dinosaurs

We are one of the largest dinosaur track sites in North America. Beneath our geodesic dome, you will find an exceptional display of early Jurassic fossil tracks that were made 200 million years ago. Surrounding our Exhibit Center are more than two miles of nature trails and the Dinosaur State Park Arboretum, containing more than 250 species and cultivars of conifers, as well as katsuras, ginkgoes, magnolias and other living representatives of plant families which appeared in the Age of Dinosaurs. The trackway in Rocky Hill, CT, has been designated a Registered Natural Landmark by the US Department of Interior. This historic site was preserved for future generations because of the dedication and foresight of many volunteers, educators, and concerned citizens. The Friends of Dinosaur Park and Arboretum, Inc., a non-profit organization, not funded by the state government, exists to promote and ensure the perpetuity of this significant, historical and educational resource and its related exhibits. Continued from page 53.

when paying with your smartphone. They are easy to use and force investing; however, try to only charge essentials. Avoid the temptation of easy spending that paying by phone causes. (This is an example of how companies track your spending behavior through technology—businesses get rich at your expense). C. If you get a gift, a bonus, find money lying on the street— just about any unexpected windfall that comes to you; go online and open a brokerage account with any of the major firms. If you have questions, you can find answers on their websites or by speaking with a representative. This account should also be on your ‘must pay’ list each month. It doesn’t have to be a lot, but deposits need to be consistent. D. Educate yourself. The third job you’ll end up with—if you follow this plan—is going to be a life-long adventure. Those people who you may have mocked when you see them checking the market on their phones all day, or glued to the news and getting emotional with every report on world events, are the same ones who are often making money. The idea is to find investment opportunities that have more risk but yield higher results. With a brokerage account, you need to begin to watch programs like Bloomberg, CNBC, and Fox Business. These are the news sources that are worth their weight in gold. Of course, you’ll also need to flip to news sites so you can gather information about events that influence the investment community. E. Take a long-shot on something you know. A family member who was committed to Apple products decided to take a lump of cash ($50,000) and buy shares many years ago. They ignored it for about ten years, and then one day—when it looked like it was peaking, they sold their portfolio for $500,000. This result wasn’t an accident; it took a lot of reading, watching the stock’s movement, along with a belief in the company and understanding of technology. Think about it; you’re the new generation and years ahead of the boomers who have invested in businesses they didn’t grow up knowing about but saw potential. If you do your homework and have a few bucks put away, you will be able to duplicate this type of success even at a reduced level. This review is only a taste of what it takes to make money; there is also much to be made in real estate, collectibles, and any other source of passive income. Those who decide to create wealth don’t often do so by cashing a payroll check each week; instead, they understand the value of time and compounding, and how to leverage it to produce multiple streams of income. I wish you the best of luck on your journey. H 62 | FEBRUARY 2020 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA
