JUST AS CAR DESIGNERS ARE INSPIRED BY THE RETRO CURVES OF CLASSIC AUTOMOBILES, AND CREATORS OF FUTURISTIC FURNITURE LOOK TO ANTIQUES, SO ARE FASHION DESIGNERS INSPIRED BY THE HISTORY OF FASHION. A COMMON FASHION MAGAZINE HEADLINE? PAST TRENDS ARE MAKING A COMEBACK! The stylist and fashion designer Zoltán Tóth collaborated with the photographer Marek Mičánek to create a fashion story for SOFFA that features an interesting mix of ensembles from pieces made by prominent designers and fashion houses like Dior, Zuzana Kubíčková and Hermès. What connects these design gurus? They find inspiration in the past and work with it to innovate.

DID YOU MISS THE OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT THE FIVE UNIQUE APARTMENTS LOCATED IN A HISTORICAL BUILDING ON PAŘÍŽSKÁ STREET IN THE CENTRE OF PRAGUE, EACH DESIGNED BY A DIFFERENT ARCHITECT? THE APARTMENTS WERE ON DISPLAY THROUGH NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER 2016 AS PART OF THE SQUAT ID23 PROJECT. IF YOU MISSED YOUR CHANCE TO VISIT IN PERSON, YOU CAN BE INSPIRED BY THIS LITTLE REVIEW. Ingrid Vurm Lerman, the founder and inspiration behind the SQUAT iD23 project, entrusted the design of the five apartments to five different architectural studios. Each studio created an entirely unique take on city centre living: architect Ivanka Kowalski created a home inspired by Paris, studio OOOOX designed an interior that marries radiant gold with the cool look of concrete, and Atelier SAD built an oasis for cycling lovers. Czech design features in the loft space designed by Lenka Míková, while admiration and love for the classic style is evident in the apartment designed by I. D. Arch. SO F FA & H ER M ÈS Encounter with Bauhaus
L’ E SP R I T DU B AUH AUS text: Adéla Kudrnová | photo: Hermès and company archives
ARTIST OR CRAFTSMAN, OR ONE AND THE SAME? THE EXCEPTIONAL SPIRIT OF THE GERMAN ART SCHOOL BAUHAUS HAS RETURNED TO THE LOUVRE, THE HOME OF THE MUSEUM OF DECORATIVE ARTS, WHICH IS CURRENTLY FEATURING AN EXHIBITION WITH MORE THAN 900 WORKS BY STUDENTS, MASTERS AND FOLLOWERS OF THIS HIGHLY INFLUENTIAL ART PHILOSOPHY. The exhibition titled L’esprit du Bauhaus [The Spirit of Bauhaus] is on display at the Musée des Arts décoratifs [Museum of Decorative Arts] in Paris from 19 October 2016 until 26 February 2017. We had the pleasure of seeing the exhibition in the company of Olivier Gabet, the Museum director and exhibition curator, as well as the curator Anne Monier. The exhibition was developed through a collaboration between the Musée des Arts décoratifs and the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès.

SEARCH, EXPERIMENT AND CREATE The marriage of art and craft, collaboration and constant searching, experimentation and creation – these were the key principles of the revolutionary art school founded in 1919 by the German architect Walter Gropius. Here architecture combined with metal craft, carpentry, weaving, painting and later even advertising, theatre, dance and photography. Three directors led the school during its existence – Walter Gropius, Hannes Meyer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, in three different locations – Weimer, Dessau and Berlin. In spite of the masters’ varied approaches, and the different political problems that haunted the school during its lifetime, Bauhaus continues to be an infinite source of inspiration, and its excellent teaching methods and publications are used to this day by many schools, not only those focused on architecture. FROM APPRENTICE TO MASTER Just like the students at Bauhaus, visitors enter the exhibition as apprentices and through individual specialised workshops they learn to appreciate various materials, colours, composition and, most of all, teamwork. These combined experiences take them to the centre of the design, where they are greeted by the perfect house, just as the founder of Bauhaus – Water Gropius – intended. As explained by the curator Anne Monier, the exhibition aims to highlight the true meaning of Bauhaus. ‘It was not about a German architectural style or artistic direction. Bauhaus was a school and that’s how we want to present it to our visitors.’ Every piece of work was valued equally at Bauhaus, and that is why you will see student work displayed proudly next to the works of Josef Albers, Lyonel Feininger or Paul Klee. BAUHAUS LEGACY Although Bauhaus was closed down by the Nazis in 1933, its legacy lives on. The exhibition closes with a selection of works by 49 contemporary artists chosen by the French artist Mathieu Mercier. In the spirit of Bauhaus, the selected artists see no chasm between art and craft.
