HAND M A DE CO S M ET I C S text: Veronika Alexová | styling: Anna Dumon and Bára Procházková photo: Anna Dumon
WINTER IS A HARD TIME FOR THE SKIN ON YOUR FACE AND HANDS. THEREFORE, WE PRESENT YOU WITH THREE RECIPES FOR NATURAL HANDMADE SOMETICS WHICH WILL MAKE YOUR COMPLEXION PERFECT. IT IS TIME FOR YOU TO PAMPER YOURSELVES! The cold touch of winter is going to be palpable and omnipresent for several more weeks. The chill, floating snowflakes and dry cold wind have an effect on your skin. That is why we present you with several simple recipes to keep your face and hands soft and perfect, despite the cold weather. Orange calendula is the best friend of dry skin – it helps to revitalise and heal. The same applies to camomile which is also good for relaxation and good mood. Enjoy the beautifully scented herbs and let them pamper you! ■ Our thanks go to the Alchymista caffè and patisserie for allowing us to photo shoot in their premises. DIFFICULTY: very easy TIME: 15 min. + 5 weeks to mature WHAT YOU NEED: vegetable oil calendula blossoms jar
Calendula is of a beautiful orange colour but more importantly it has exceptional healing powers. Calendula oil is perfect for your entire body! You can also use it as a precious ingredient in your homemade cosmetics (for instance add it into your winter lotion or lip balm). INSTRUCTIONS: Place the blossoms (either fresh or dried) into a clean jar. Pour in vegetable oil (it is better to use one that has nurturing effects and is not too aromatic) – ca 1 cm above the top layer of the blossoms. Store the jar in a warm and light place and shake properly every day. After 5 – 6 weeks drain the content. Store the oil in a dark jar (best is dark purple-blue) in order to preserve the valuable essences. ■

DIFFICULTY: easy TIME: 1 hour WHAT YOU NEED: ½ cup of shea butter ¼ cup of coconut oil 1 spoon of calendula oil 15 drops of lavender essence oil 5 drops of hemp oil (optional)
INSTRUCTIONS: Carefully melt coconut oil and shea butter in a bowl (preferably in bain-marie) in order to connect the two essences. Add calendula, hemp and essential oil, stir and let cool down until the mixture becomes solid again. After that place the mixture into a bowl and mix it (using a hand mixer) until it is nice and creamy. After that divide the cream into several smaller tins: apart from your own use you can give it to someone else. TIP: Store the cream in the fridge, it will last you up to six months. ■
DIVIDE YOUR HOMEMADE CREAM INTO SEVERAL SMALLER TINS: YOU CAN GIVE IT TO YOUR FRIENDS. IT IS A PERFECT VALENTINE’S DAY GIFT, DON’T YOU THINK?

DI Y PRO J EC T Learn to knit!

K NIT W EA R - S C A R F text: Adéla Kudrnová | concept and styling: SOFFA | photo: Lina Németh
OF COURSE YOU CAN PURCHASE A WARM SCARF IN A SHOP BUT IF YOU HANDMAKE IT YOURSELF, IT WILL MAKE YOU TWICE AS HAPPY! MOREOVER, KNITTING IS A GREAT WAY OF RELAXATION. GIVE IT A GO! DIFFICULTY: medium TIME: depends on individual skills and on how much time you are willing to spend on it WHAT YOU NEED: yarn (we used Magic Ball yarn by SuperGarne) knitting needles (we used wooden needles size 8) thick needle with a large eyelet
Knitting is going through a great comeback and it is no surprise. We also fell for it. The feeling of creating something with your own two hands is amazing. Furthermore, knitting allows you to relax your mind. Are you saying that you cannot knit and you do not dare to try? It is so easy! You can find various online courses and videos on the Internet. We recommend DROPS Design (www.garnstudio. com) which already exists in several language mutations!

STAR T I N G LO O P
You can do the same what we did – wrap the yarn around your thumb in the shape of 8 and with your knitting needle pull one stitch into the other. You can create the loop easily using only your fingers. Watch the Garnstudio video at http://vimeo.com/4896959
BA S I C ROW
There are more ways how to make the starting row. The most common one is the so-called “casting stitches on one needle”. A detailed video by Garnstudio at http://vimeo.com/4896959 will show you how to do it. We started the first row in a more complicated way – with the so-called “Norwegian style or German whipping”. This kind of hem is prettier and larger. You will find the instructions in this video http://vimeo.com/49051601

Knit-stitch the entire scarf. With the needle in your right hand pull a stitch from the back to the front through the stitch on your left needle and let the “bottom stitch slide down from the left needle. See knit stitch in this video http://vimeo.com/80051186.
E ND STITC H A N DÂ F I N I S H
At the end of a row take off the last stitch as if you were making a knit stitch and knit it into the front of a stitch at the start of the next row. This kind of stitch is similar to knit stitch but is made in the right to left direction (i.e. you are making the back part of the stitch). FINISH: Make the first two stitches and return the last one onto the left needle. Pull a stitch through both of them and continue the same way: return the last stitch in the row on the needle and pull the penultimate stitch through. See the entire process in this video: http://vimeo.com/4961836 â–
INSTRUCTIONS: Firstly, decide how big you want your scarf (the size of the circle) and which yarn you want to use. Get your particular yarn and choose the size of the knitting-needles accordingly. When planning the size of your scarf, do not forget that you should be able to pull it over your head! We used wooden needles size 8 and Magic Ball yarn by SuperGarne. Your scarf will consist of two parts which you will sow together at the end. The size of a single part of our scarf is 70 x 20 cm. You will find the description of individual steps on the following pages. If you do not know how to knit yet, first learn the basic knitting techniques. We attached illustrational pictures, links and videos for you to look at. Start with the starting loop and make the first – starting – row. Use the knit stitch for the entire scarf. At the end and start of every row witch a knit into the front and back of a stitch. Finally, you will learn how to end the whole part. Once you have both parts of your scarf ready, simply sow them together using a needle with a large eyelet and you are done! ■ ►
