IF KARLOVY VARY IS THE CITY OF FILM THEN NOVÝ BOR IS THE CITY OF GLASS. ANYONE WHO IS ANYBODY IN THE WORLD OF GLASS OR IS INVOLVED IN GLASS IN SOME WAY CANNOT MISS THE INTERNATIONAL GLASS SYMPOSIUM, WHICH TAKES PLACE IN NOVÝ BOR ONCE EVERY THREE YEARS. Early in October of this year, the eyes of the entire glassmaking world were focused on one place: Nový Bor and its surroundings. The 12th annual International Glass Symposium (IGS 2015) was held here from 1 –4 October. We also set off to this city and region, where everything revolves around glass, to capture interesting moments on camera from the glass workshops and factories. We have purposefully chosen images that you won’t find in official IGS photographs. If you are more interested in photographs of IGS participants and products, go to www.igsymposium.cz. The International Glass Symposium (IGS) and Nový Bor have been an inseparable couple for a long thirty-three years. In 1982, Crystalex a.s. Nový Bor first invited artists and designers from the whole world to its premises to execute their designs and artistic ideas with the help of Nový Bor glassmakers. Since then, the International Glass Symposium has taken place every three years without interruption, and over the past thirty-three years, more than 500 artists have taken part in these ► RIGHT: The International Glass Symposium gives the general public a chance to see the glassmaking process from beginning to end at studios and glassworks. Here, intermediate products are waiting to be transformed by a glass cutter.

ALSO WORTHY OF ATTENTION IS THE LOCAL ARCHITECTURE: IN ADDITION TO THE TYPICAL LOG HOUSES AND TIMBER-FRAMED BUILDINGS, THERE ARE THE HOMES OF THE RICH FORMER OWNERS OF THE GLASSWORKS.

symposia. The tradition of this triennial continued this year as well, with the best glass artists from around the world meeting at this one place to bring to life their artistic ideas in cooperation with glassmakers in the glassworks and workshops before the eyes of experts and the general public. As part of “Glass Road”, during the open day visitors had the chance to visit these glassmakers, studios and museums, to name a few: Ajeto Art Glass Museum, Ave Clara, Egermann, HG Atelier Design, Jiří Pačinek Lindava, Kolektiv Ateliers, Preciosa Lighting, Ajeto Lindava glassworks and Slavia glassworks. Are you disappointed that you missed the IGS? Until the end of February 2016, you still have the chance to see an exhibition of the glassworks created during IGS 2015 at the Nový Bor Glass Museum. ■ FOR MORE INFORMATION GO TO: www.igsymposium.cz www.glassmuseum.eu RIGHT: Not too far from Kamenický Šenov (a renowned glassmaking town) Preciosa Lighting, a company that exports amazing glass chandeliers worldwide, lies nestled amidst beautiful hills between the Lusatian Mountains and the Bohemian Central Uplands. A visit to this glass factory is an unforgettable experience!

YOUNG GLASSMAKERS Seventh annual international exhibition

S TANISL AV L I B EN S K Ý AWA R D 2 0 1 5 text: Adéla Kudrnová | photos: Stanislav Libenský Award archive

DO YOU LOVE GLASS? THEN YOU SHOULDN’T MISS THE SEVENTH ANNUAL GLASS COMPETITIVE EXHIBITION OF THE STANISLAV LIBENSKÝ AWARD 2015, WHICH IS INTENDED FOR NEW APPLIED ARTS GRADUATES FROM THE WORLD OVER. THIS YEAR, 40 YOUNG ARTISTS FROM 23 COUNTRIES TOOK PART IN THE COMPETITION AND THEIR WORKS CAN BE SEEN AT THE ACCOMPANYING EXHIBITION UNTIL 3 JANUARY 2016. WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT! The Stanislav Libenský Award is, as the name suggests, a tribute to Stanislav Libenský, one of the most important Czech glasswork artists. The unique competitive exhibition presents the final dissertations of applied arts students who used glass in their work. The exhibition thus gives the public a chance to see the work of the next generation of glassmakers. At the same time, it helps young artists launch their artistic careers. At this year’s exhibition, you can look forward to the works of young artists from France, Slovakia, Egypt and Ukraine. You will see conceptual objects, design items and even jewellery. Here we present the works of this year’s winners! ■ MORE INFORMATION CAN BE FOUND HERE: International Glass Exhibition ZIBA Prague, Glass Experience Museum 21 October – 3 January 2016 www.libenskyaward.com

TAMI ISHIDA (JAPAN) | CUPS | 1ST PLACE “Although her cups seem traditional, upon closer inspection we discover that they bring together several historical and technological influences. Although working with tradition is never easy, the author has successfully retained the reference to tradition while creating something new. Her work is characterised by perfect technique and original use of colour. www.libenskyaward.com 22

WALAA HAMZA (EGYPT) | TIME FOR LUNCH | 2ND PLACE “This ingeniously presented basket of fresh glass vegetables is an ordinary but still absolutely unexpected work. Well-selected materials together with the pâte de verre technique create the perfect combination of the “taste” of glass and the opportunity to tease friends.” www.libenskyaward.com

23

CHIEKO SASAKI (JAPAN) | IRIDESCENT CLOUDS DRAGON | 3RD PLACE “The dragon is a mythological creature and this work has the same feel. It is timeless, as if it came from the past and referred to the future at the same time. This work is something like an ode – it shows and at the same time conveys the joy of the craft to all others.” www.libenskyaward.com

24

LENKA HUSÁRKOVÁ (CZECH REPUBLIC) | INSTANT LIVES The special prize for the design of the Pilsner Urquell auction bottle was won by Lenka Husárková. You can see her winning work at www.libenskyaward.com. We, however, are showing you her competitive work Instant Lives, a set of three funeral urns made of salt. The salt urn was made of three kilogrammes of sea salt and is primary intended for burial at sea, where the urn will completely dissolve. 25

IKEA & SOFFA ATELIERS A Look Back at Designblok 2015

ANYO NE CA N B E A DES I G N ER ! text: Adéla Kudrnová | styling: workshop participants photo: Lina Németh, Adéla Havelková

AS PART OF THIS YEAR’S DESIGNBLOK, WE DECIDED TO GET TOGETHER WITH IKEA TO PROVE THAT TRULY ANYONE CAN BE A DESIGNER. WE PREPARED A SERIES OF CREATIVE WORKSHOPS WHERE PARTICIPANTS HAD THE CHANCE TO LEARN NEW CREATIVE TECHNIQUES FROM OUR DESIGNERS AND ILLUSTRATORS AND CREATE THEIR OWN WORKS OF ART! COME SEE HOW THE WORKSHOPS LOOKED AND ADMIRE THE STILL LIFES THAT CZECH BLOGGERS PREPARED USING THE WORKS CREATED! A series of creative workshops over the course of five evenings were held at the IKEA exhibit at Designblok. Delightful works of art that could adorn any table were created at the workshops. Original vases and glasses were created at the workshop devoted to decorating glass with Janka Murínová. Under the guidance of illustrator Anička Mastníková, white tableware was transformed into settings full of patterns during a workshop dedicated to painting on porcelain. Most participants were new to the wood engraving technique that Janka Murínová demonstrated, enchanting male and female studio participants alike. A proper table setting needs decorations, and Lenka Hlaváčová taught those participating how to make paper ones at Thursday’s workshop. The last creative studio was attended by Czech bloggers writing about design, interior design and fashion. As high-quality photographs are the foundation of a good blog, the bloggers first created a still life out of the finished products, and the styling, composition and photography were then consulted with the SOFFA and IKEA team. We are pleased to be able to show you the resulting photographs! Do our workshops look good to you and would you like to participate in one? Follow us on our social networks. ■
