Film Series Graphics

Film Series Graphics is a project based on hypothetical scenarios, and the Museum of Modern Art is the client. The museum project is a video library available at their website and in Apple iTunes. There is a documentary, Style and Design Through the Ages, about graphic design and art, but also covering architecture, music, fashion and fine art from different eras. The title must be on the layout and the typography should be an original used at that time. The success comes with a solid combination of images and typefaces, which addresses originally the culture. My selected eras in this project are: Art Nouveau (Pre-1900), Bauhaus (1920s-30s), Pop Art (1950s-60s), New Wave (1970s-80s) and Steampunk (1990s-Present). I’ve been studying about these eras for a while, but there are some details in eras, like Art Nouveau and New Wave that I needed to research more. I researched about each era, looking for details and colors, primarily typefaces. The research was really important, but finding good and original typographies was the big challenge.

The second part was the thumbnails creation. It helped me a lot. I brought all the details I could and I tried on the paper with simple pencil. Some pictures and names from the research helped me to figure out which is the main feature of each era. For Art Nouveau, I chose the famous stained glass with vivid colors. Bauhaus has the idea about showing the typography as the main element to express the functionality and neutral, basic colors. In the Pop Art layout, I wanted to mix Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, the comic font and polka dots with the consumption protest. New Wave layout had an evolution with the typeface research, the subjective and instinctive work, my intention was show different textures and how to “break rules”.

SPD Competition Magazine Feature

First of all, we had a preliminary step to study more about grids. Choosing successful magazines I had to trace their grids and analyze the headlines, body copy, captions and images. It was good to know what works better or not. At the same time I could see different kinds of grids and make relation with it and the magazine public behavior. Society of Publication Designers Student Competition was used as framework for the Project 2. We needed to create two spreads of magazine articles. Following the competition rules, among “How to”, “City/Regional”, “Innovations”, “Sports/ Adventure” and “Fashion/Lifestyle” I chose the last one to create my piece. My article is about a famous girl, who through the internet became known as a good designer by

her portraits. Even with these contents I chose to show more about her face and her behavior than only drawings or works. Maybe for a teen magazine or even graphic design magazine which wants to show the designer evolution but also her emotions as a student. Therefore I took photographs in black and white to place her expressions strongly. I used her sketchbook as a diary and I tried to crate layers with these feelings in her face and expressions. Black and white photos can show the pictures more seriously, deeply and as Yui is growing up, so I mixed her favorite colors and her face in black and white. I used dummy text, except for the pull quote. The grid follow the same concepts about the behavior character: mix the straight and serious body text with the playful frames for captions and pictures. Show the grid and the subject in the same harmony.

Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary Poster

The third project is the poster for the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary, during the event at Thanksliving. This Farm is an institution founded by Doug Abel and Jenny Brown in 2004, to provide shelter to chickens, cows, pigs, turkeys, ducks, sheep, goats, and rabbits that have been rescued from cases of abuse or neglect. Thanksgiving is the typical event that America has every year, but here it is a little different. No animal become a dish, all the food at the banquet is vegan, and this is the point, which makes this farm a special place. In conclusion, the pardon of the turkey is nothing new. It is actually the opposite idea. You won’t be sorry if the turkey is the main guest and not a main dish. Initially we had an exercise to catch the welfare idea and we analyzed some good and bad posters. It was helpful to create each concept and understand more about the goal. Later, we had a briefing with Doug Abel by Skype and I resumed some ideas about the WFAS. My first impressions were: the animals treated as family, the farm spirit, green, rustic and handmade objects. The WFAS website gave me more ideas about the life and the work there. My first goal was to show the event as

a chic but kind event. But, how to express the love for the animals without seem so cliche? I started to create “fall” sensations with leafs and hot colors. My pallet was decided so I should follow as a warm event. Warm because of the colors and the love. In this way I could research more and I got the wood idea, and the simulation of carving. So that it would become more inviting. Later I could resume the love with a simple heart, to show the turkey as an honored guest.

Incidental Letterforms

Incidental Letterforms is a project that encourages the development of concepts and analysis. Basically we should observe the environment around us and try to find letterforms in physical elements. Then, we needed to photograph everything, including every attempt with letters or even incomplete letters. After that we should have worked on the compositions, looking for typographies and place photos and types that overlap. In conclusion the font and each photo should have the same shape, graphic idea or even similar parts. The project is divided into categories: organic and human made. Each one has the emphasis, extension and pattern. Finally, the project is composed by 6 different letters and compositions.

In my mind, the categories caused an impression about which part can be organic and which part can be human made. The first seems always as natural environment, leafs, trees, grass‌ and the second one reminds me of bricks, stairs and buildings. I didn’t follow it as a theme for the project, but basically it was my start. My challenge was working with imagination and following it with typography. I had many pictures to choose but the letters were pretty simple. I found different shapes and letterforms just where I live. I didn’t want to be too common or repetitive, so I organized the pages and fonts. I printed it out and bound it in a korean type, with folders and two covers. It can be checked here.
