THE LIGHTING IN THE NEW EXTENSION to the Kunsthalle Mannheim (Mannheim Museum of Modern Art) can be tailored to suit different requirements thanks to the controllable lighting panels in the ceiling and configurable spotlights – anything is possible, from a black box to a white cube for presenting artwork. The key to this sophisticated solution is the use of LED light engines and LED drivers from Tridonic. Mannheim is known as the “city of squares” because of its ordered structure of blocks in a chessboard pattern. Architects Gerkan, Marg und Partner (gmp) took this pattern as the starting point for the design of the extension to the Kunsthalle Mannheim. For this new building they developed the concept of a “city within a city”. The space is therefore divided into smaller units with rectangular footprints, organised around a central element – a 22 metre high atrium. Thirteen galleries are interlinked by bridges, stairs and terraces.

These cubes with their individual dimensions and proportions offer a total exhibition space of 3,600 square metres. Some open up to daylight from windows and glazing units, while other appear as introverted cabinets and halls. This means that the curators have a wide range of environments in which they can present all genres of artwork to best effect.

the ceiling”, said Daniel Walden, the man in charge of the project at a.g Licht. “We could then do without light sources as objects in the room, leaving the clear minimalist architecture of the cubes unimpaired. We used simulations to calculate the dimensions and placement of the ceiling panels so that we could achieve optimum illumination and the greatest possible freedom for the exhibition layouts.” A power rail into which spotlights can be installed for accent lighting and a ventilation strip provide the outlines of the lighting panels. Combining multiple functions in the rectangular form ensures that the ceiling remains pleasantly uncluttered.

do not cast shadows. A linear opal plastic cover, which Tridonic offers as an accessory for the LLE, also helps. It ensures that the LEDs do not appear as individual points of light and also protects against contact when the luminaire is open.
High quality of light, “The client specified that the building sys- digital control tems in the suspended ceiling should be accessible via the luminaires. The frame with the film and the equipment carrier with the LED modules and LED drivers are hinged to reveal an inspection opening in the back wall of the luminaire housing”, explained Uwe Jacob. By combining 24 mm wide LED light engines of type LLE G4 in different lengths and different light outputs and with a colour temperature of 3,500 K, the equipment carriers could be populated so that the light from the ceiling panels was homogeneous. This also means that the braces in the film frame are not visible and 14
This demanding project also called for high quality of light, including narrow binning. This means that there are no visible spectral differences between the individual Tridonic modules. This is essential to achieve a homogeneous effect, particularly if, as here, the LED light engines are so tightly packed next to one another. Tridonic technology also ensures colour fidelity of the LEDs when dimmed. The luminous flux can be reduced or increased without any perceptible colour shift. els. The LLEs are operated on one4all Premium drivers. In addition to various other control options, these drivers include a DALI interface as standard. The adjustable output current of the constant-current LED drivers provides flexibility in the assignment of the LED light engines. Other benefits include particularly low standby power consumption and long life.
Light for art Kunsthalle Mannheim claims to be a “museum in motion”. Consequently, it does not intend to organise any static permanent exhibitions in the new building. Instead, objects from its collection will be presented in the cubes in new combinations and themes, with ever-changing special exhibitions of works of art loaned from museums around the world. Thanks to the flexibility of the system, the lighting can always be configured to achieve the best possible visual, conservational and staging effects. ❏

must function to code, no one wants to see the devices ruin the aesthetics and Ensuring Safety of a building’s interiors. So industry professionals are increasingly keeping Design professionals often meticuthe lights hidden or camouflaged until needed to ensure it artfully blends in lously plan the aesthetics of various building elements including style, form, and with its surroundings. materials in a wide range of structures. “From the standpoint of interior architectural aesthetics, traditional wall or ceiling-mounted emergency lighting systems can be sort of an eyesore that establishments with a more refined look want to eliminate because it can take away from the architectural experience,” says John Decker, IALD of Lighting Design Studio, a multi-disciplinary firm. The company has completed lighting projects for a variety of commercial spaces including resort hotels, spas, casinos, restaurants, retail and office spaces. 16
Now an innovative option, fixtures completely hidden behind closed door panels on walls or ceilings, is helping to meet emergency lighting code. Only in the case of emergency or power outage do the doors open and the emergency lights emerge to ensure sufficient light along the path of egress, as mandated by the NFPA and International Building Code (IBC). For even greater discretion, the panels can be painted, wallpapered over, and placed in locations out of the line of sight to make them completely inconspicuous.

This can involve upscale hotels, resorts, restaurants, retail centers, office buildings, and concert halls as well as historic courthouses, museums, city halls, state and federal buildings. A challenge, however, occurs when urgent project timelines lead to unfortunate compromises in building aesthetics, often in the area of emergency lighting, at the last minute. “When building owners and end users pay for architectural services, they may have a wonderful structure with every-

who is a trained architect. “Bug-eye” is the colorful term used to describe typical emergency lighting that surface mounts on the wall with a battery box under two lamps that resemble a bug’s eyes. Decker says there are superior methods for hiding, or concealing, emergency lighting.
The first method is to utilize a backup battery hidden in the housing of a lighting fixture, such as a recessed downlight or suspended linear luminaire. In the event of a power failure, the battery will then supply emergency lighting for a designated amount of time as determined by code. However, Decker points out another Continued on page 18 alternative. He points
thing considered in the space – until the end of the project when ill-considered, utilitarian, even ugly, emergency lighting is installed to provide light for emergency egress,” says Decker. “In nicer hospitality, entertainment, office, and service settings with refined interiors –like hotels, resorts, restaurants, spas, casinos, museums, historic districts, and themed amusement parks – foreign looking emergency lighting fixtures mounted to the walls or ceiling can look really out of place,” he adds. While there are many emergency lighting approaches available that will sufficiently provide one foot candle of illumination along the path of egress as specified by the NFPA, these options typically begin with deciding on the type of power source that will be used in the event of a power outage. Often, existing architectural lights are incorporated if possible, powered by centralized inverters or generators. However, when that is not sufficient, dedicated battery powered emergency lights may be required, but these can be obtrusive and unattractive. “If the engineer proposes to put ugly, ‘bug-eye’ emergency lights in a beautiful interior space, we try to find aesthetic solutions that still meet the code requirement of providing enough egress lighting for emergency situations – while maintaining the beauty of that space,” says Decker, FOR FREE INFO, CIRCLE 41 ON READER SERVICE CARD

With such new tools to make emergency lighting less conspicuous, building design professionals can now preserve elegant, architectural quality aesthetics while meeting emergency lighting and life safety codes. to Isolite, a manufacturer of specificationgrade emergency lighting products. The company offers the Genie, along with a more compact version called the Mini Genie, that remain fully recessed behind two flat panel doors installed in the ceiling or walls until needed. “With the Genie and Mini Genie, you have a concealed look architecturally, but under normal loss of power the battery kicks in, the doors open, and the lamps pop out to light the way,” says Decker. “The recessed solution lends itself to maintaining the integrity of the architectural interior space, so it works functionally and aesthetically,” he adds. While having emergency lights emerge from door panels when needed keeps them out of the way, lighting professionals like Decker also value the ability to camouflage them as well. With both of the units, the flat panel doors lay flush with the trim and mounting surface, and exterior trim can be painted or wall-papered to match any color or decor so as to blend in with the architecture. 18
Because these emergency lights are fully self-contained and can be recessed into walls or ceilings, they are virtually invisible during normal lighting conditions, and thus eliminate unsightly, surface mounted emergency lights and battery packs. “When the Isolite products are fully recessed and the panels are painted or wallpapered to match their surroundings, you really cannot see them unless you are specifically looking,” says Decker. According to Decker, the design and engineering team utilized this approach for emergency lighting in the themed, Camp Jurassic caves at Universal's Islands of Adventure in Orlando. “We used a Genie product, and it was painted out so you really couldn’t see it unless you were looking for it,” he says. “It maintained the integrity of the aesthetics.” While this approach can enhance the aesthetics of new builds and retrofits, it is particularly helpful in preserving the “look and feel” of historic buildings, which still must accommodate life safety and secu-

rity needs, as well as update building systems appropriately. Such implementation strikes a balance between retaining original building features and accommodating new technologies and equipment. In fact, the Mini, which can wall mount with a total depth of 3.5”, is also well suited for shallow plenum applications, the narrow space between the structural ceiling and drop-down ceiling used for HVAC air circulation. The company also offers recessed LED emergency lighting mounted 18” above the floor. The product directs light to the floor to more effectively illuminate the path of egress than traditional ceiling or wall mounted emergency lights. “Lighting the path of egress from a lower vantage point makes sense in situations where there is a fire because all the smoke rises and [if it were higher] it could block some of the light,” says Decker. With such new tools to make emergency lighting less conspicuous, building design professionals can now preserve elegant, architectural quality aesthetics while meeting emergency lighting and life safety codes. “Wherever aesthetics are valued, concealing emergency lighting should be an option,” concludes Decker. new PRODUCTS Cummins Inc. launches new 125-200kw generator sets that enable the implementation of efficient power solutions to reduce investment costs and replace the current QSB7 diesel genset series models Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) has announced the launch of a new generator set series. The C125D6D, C150D6D, C175D6D and C200D6D diesel generator sets are replacing the current DSGAB, DSGAC, DSGAD and DSGAE models. The new models include three circuit breakers, single phase power at 175 and 200 kilowatts and improved conduit entry access. Alex Savelli, Executive Director, Cummins Power Generation said, “Replacing our current 125 to 200-kilowatt diesel generator sets is our next step in driving to a connect series common platform, which provides more value to our customers and enables them to reduce their overall investment costs.” The three circuit breakers on the new generator sets reduce overall installation cost and provide the option of load separation on the generator. This allows the convenience of not needing to install a separate distribution panel for different types of loads. The breakers are also 100 percent and 80 percent Long and Short Time Instantaneous (LSI) rated at 250 to 800 amps. Customers and installers of the new generator sets will find the overall cost and difficulty of installing the generators has been reduced. The new front-end conduit entry access reduces cable routing effort, and the aluminium enclosure decreases the size of the generator sets, as well as reduces corrosion. The new 60 hertz series, rated 125 to 200 kilowatt-electric, is powered by a Cummins four-cycle, inline, six-cylinder dual speed diesel engine, based on the work-horse Cummins QSB6.7 liter engine. The new generator set series is designed for a wide variety of conventional standby applications, delivering reliable power, low emissions and fast response to load changes. Additional features offered with the new models include connection ports for easy connectivity, remote start and other auxiliary connections, as well as an angled screen for easy readability when installed on a fuel tank.
