An Unlikely Industrial Lighting Solution By Dennis Boone, Vice President Sales and Marketing
OPEN CEILINGS, EXPOSED BEAMS, rafters and structural steel, all elements that lend to an industrial look popular in today’s interior spaces. From converted warehouses to modern cafés and chic studio lofts it is hard to avoid the modern industrial aesthetic (nor would we want to). While these spaces may look unfinished or rough they are anything but. Much attention to detail goes into every aspect of these interiors. As Louis Sullivan one famously put it “form ever follows function”. Though this quote is often misattributed to Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe the President of the Bauhaus and often mis quoted as with the omission of the word “ever”, it is undeniable the concept is true. This is clearly ev6
ident in today’s architectural designs where structural elements in their purely functional form become corner stones of their interiors. The same open ceilings and exposed walls that allow these structural and industrial elements to show through also

present their designers with the challenge of concealing the inner workings of a building that are often hastily installed in these areas. Supporting lights, hiding unsightly pipes and conduit, and concealing wires and even sprinkler systems all require special attention and consideration not to mention precise planning. Through working directly with a number of prominent architectural firms around the world Chalfant Manufacturing and OBO Bettermann have been providing a rather unlikely solution to these problems; cable trays. port chains, hangers or conduit. The wires and cables can run through the tray and directly into the fixture all completely out of sight while providing a key design element. Cable trays also offer a number of additional benefits such as their ability to act as an equipment ground conductor (when you select a UL classified brand) or available corrosion resistant finishes such as zinc galvanized, stainless steel and powder coated options (in any RAL color). The usefulness of cable trays does not end with supporting light fixtures, they can also be used to hide pipes, tubes, wires or other unsightly fixtures in an exposed ceiling. In the interior renovations and expansion at a renowned college in Wellesley Massachusetts, we worked with a prominent Philadelphia architect who brilliantly used our cable tray system to hide unsightly pipes as well as support light fixtures. We performed stress tests at our in-house certified test center to ensure the tray was robust enough to support the light fixtures mounted to the bottom. The final design called for our ventilated tray in a white powder coat finish and used our concealed hangers. At another university interior renovation an architectural firm wanted to use our tray to conceal the water pipes of the sprinkler system. The design called for holes to be cut in the bottom of the tray where the sprinkler heads were mounted. Because the tray was not used as a structural or mechanical support the installers were able to take liberties with the installation of the tray such as making larger Continued on page 10 than normal cut outs.
Cable trays can be a perfect solution for many of these applications including supporting light fixtures. The ventilated style popularized in Europe is especially well suited for these applications. The solid single sheet design provides the strength required to support the fixture and the hole patterns allows for almost unlimited anchoring points. SAVING TIME AND MONEY ON A JOBSITE are important con-
siderations for project owners, and it is prudent for contractors to show how they can cut expenses and increase site efficiency. Today’s LED jobsite lighting options are making it easier to reduce waste, save energy and increase worker productivity—as well as reuse lighting on the next job. Although the advantages are often dovetailed, below is a breakdown of how value is added to projects when electrical contractors utilize purpose-built LED lighting. 12

the elements and the jobsite. Their long life and durable, weatherproof construction make them depreciable assets rather than throw-away consumables. Not to mention that even the initial costs of purpose-built LED lighting can actually be less than traditional jobsite lighting. Reusable products. Quality construction is a key reason why purpose-built LED lighting has transformed jobsite lighting solutions from disposable products to reusable assets. Plus, some advanced purpose-built lighting products are designed with the option to be daisychained together to allow for easy setup and then effortless redesign as a job progresses. No lights are caught between walls and ductwork. Compare these advantages to string lighting, which has long been the norm on construction sites. Anybody who has worked with string lighting knows that it is cumbersome to install and difficult to salvage. Cords get caught behind walls and ductwork, resulting in cords cut and the lighting thrown away. 14
When the same lighting can be moved to different areas throughout a project and reused on new projects, the labor and materials savings are immense. Reduced labor/increased productivity. A typical jobsite uses a variety of
bulb-based temporary lighting products, many of which (like string lighting) are labor-intensive to install and maintain. Often, the lighting may need to be repositioned as the project progresses, which is difficult to do with string lights or tower lights. Bulbs may need to be replaced often—so often, in fact, that it is necessary to maintain a stock of replacement bulbs and assign someone to replace broken or burned-out bulbs throughout the day. This translates to excessive labor as well as materials costs. Purpose-built LED lighting reduces installation points on a 25:1 ratio, illuminating 2500 sq. ft. up to 5 fc. Fewer circuits are required, the need for hard wiring/junction boxes is eliminated and the lighting is easy to move as the job evolves. Also, there are no bulbs to

change. As a result, labor is reduced by up to 90 percent—not just during installation but also during the job and at takedown. LED lighting also is typically more compact and lightweight than traditional lighting. Some LED lighting tower models, for instance, can be lifted onto the back of a pickup truck for easy transportation and then moved around the site by hand. It’s no longer necessary to have employees manage the time-consuming task of towing a traditional light tower to the jobsite behind a truck and bringing it off site for refueling and repairs. With LED portable lighting, less time is wasted. Additionally, purpose-built LED lighting has other, less obvious advantages that directly affect worker productivity. For instance, metal halide bulbs can be slow to start and slow to reach full brightness, particularly in cold weather. LED lighting doesn’t have this limitation and immediately turns on to full brightness, even in cold weather. Plus, the directional charContinued on page 16 acter of LED lighting

means lighting can be focused where it is needed most. These factors create a better-lit environment that improves overall workmanship and productivity. Reduced energy costs. Traditional bulb-based lighting systems come with excessive external costs. They waste significant amounts of energy through heat and the emitting of non-directional light. The energy savings that result from LED lighting can potentially add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars on long-running projects. In fact, the energy savings alone will pay for the whole costs of the lights within a short time frame—usually within nine months. As an example, metal halide bulbs use a massive amount of energy, and the bulbs often break or burn out on the jobsite. Light towers, such as those containing two or four 1000-watt metal halide lamps, are powered by large generators. The cost of purchasing or renting a generator is significant, plus it must be kept fueled and running. Manpower is necessary to operate and maintain generator lights. Today’s purpose-built LED light towers, on the other hand, are much more energy-efficient. They can produce the same amount of usable light while consuming 80 percent less energy than traditional options. They also provide better light dispersion, so fewer towers are needed on a jobsite. Safer jobsites. Another factor to consider is when a hot bulb makes contact with skin, it can result in a significant burn. If any flammable material is near a bulb, there’s potential for a fire. Quality LEDs do not bring these dangers to the jobsite because they generate very little heat. Also, compact fluorescent and metal-halide bulbs contain mercury and toxic heavy metals and emit UV radiation. 16

contractors don’t have to go all-in overnight. They can enter the LED world in an unhurried way, based largely on available rebates and what their customers have in mind. 18

they have to consult checklists to make sure the lamp and ballast are compatible. And what do they do when the ballast eventually fails? Another option is to use an LED replacement kit. This gives contractors dimming capability and long lamp life – and it works from the get-go with an LED driver. Contractors can also choose to install replacement LED luminaires. This can dramatically change the look and feel of the lighted space, and it gives contractors the most upgrade for the dollar. There are obviously pros and cons with each solution. If you’re just swapping out a fluorescent lamp for an LED lamp, check to see if there are tube rebates in your area. If so, you’ll likely get very rapid payback. An LED replacement kit delivers much better lumen maintenance than a replacement T8 lamp because it handles the thermal aspects of LED better. It works with the LED driver to give full dimming ca-

Most manufacturers now offer two types of replacement LED luminaires: a general-purpose type with a prismatic lens and an architectural design. Both come in 2x2 and 2x4 sizes that drop easily into the ceiling. A single T8 replacement lamp costs about six dollars, but it allows a contractor to cut energy costs in half. A replacement LED luminaire runs about $90 to $100, but it offers the dual benefit of improved looks and energy savings. Plus rebates are

much larger when you replace the entire luminaire. With LED technology, contractors can choose to either make a modest investment or enjoy the benefits of a brand-new fixture, warranty and aesthetic. veteran owned business in 1999. The goal of the business was to provide cost effective safety consulting, employee training such as: confined space entry, fall protection, electrical safety and provide sales of electrical shock and flash protective equipment and fall protection equipment to businesses in the Washington DC area. Reliance Industries provided fall protection products and much of the sales and training was on behalf of the supplier. In 2000, the owner decided to retire from his business, and Vince decided to discontinue the fall protection line of his business and concentrate more in the electrical training and products. Vince had been a distributor for Certified Insulated Products (CIP), a manufacturer of electrical insulated tools and electrical arc flash clothing manufactured by Otex in Rochester, New York. As a distributor, Vince provided sales through his internet website and much through relationships with electrical contractors. His training was a classroom environment and was provided directly to customers but he also taught as a sub-contractor for other safety consulting companies and the Chesa-

peake Safety Council in Baltimore, Maryland. In 2005, Vince partnered with Vivid Learning Systems in Cascades, Washington to provide on-line training in safe work practices. Training in electrical safe work practices is still provided locally in the Washington DC area and as a partner with an electrical engineering firm and online. The training is based on the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) standards and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 70E standard. An example is the lightweight 40 Calorie vented hood offered by Otex. The material is of the latest technology. The vented assembly is constructed for balance on the back of the hardhat and the airflow is 27 CFM to prevent fogging of the face shield and provide cooling to the worker. It took over a year to develop the product with the user prior to having the hood “flash tested”. This product is now standard issue with many electrical contractors. new PRODUCTS Transformer Ohmmeter from Megger Reliably Measures Winding Resistance The MTO106 is used on smaller distribution and transmission transformers Megger now offers a transformer ohmmeter that affordably, accurately and reliably measures winding resistance in smaller distribution and transmission transformers. Weighing just 16 pounds, the MTO106 is compact and readily portable. Operating this new transformer ohmmeter is straightforward. Users make the ground connection, connect the power, and then make connections to the transformer under test using the supplied Kelvin leads. Once the required test current is selected, the user simply presses the start button. Test results are clearly shown on a large backlit display. To ensure safe operation, both audible and visual indicators alert users that a test is being conducted. At the end of the test, the winding is automatically discharged with visual and audible indicators alerting of operation. Discharge continues until completion, even if the supply to the instrument is turned off. The MTO106 has two test channels and manually selectable test currents in five steps up to a maximum of 6 A. This allows the current to be chosen correctly for the transformer under test, while minimizing the risk of heating the windings. The ohmmeter delivers an open-circuit test voltage up to 48 V, ensuring that even large transformers are saturated rapidly, reducing the time needed for testing. This new tester can detect problems like faulty tap changer contacts, broken conductors, shorted winding disks or layers, as well as poor bushing connections. AFL Introduces Plenum-rated Indoor/Outdoor Loose Tube Cable AFL is introducing the LQ-Series I/O Plenum Loose Tube Cable, developed to provide a lower cost inter-building cabling solution for campus-based networks. Because the LQ cable is tested and qualified to meet the leading industry cable standards for outside plant (OSP) and inside plant (ISP) plenum-rated fiber optic cables, it can be used as a single-cable solution for OSP and ISP cable installations. This dual-rating functionality eliminates the need to use separate cables for OSP and ISP route segments and the associated requirement to include a splice transition point within 50 feet of the inside plant to connect the two separate cables. “The National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) NEC guidelines allow for outside plant-only cables to be routed into a building space for up to only 50 feet,” explained Stephen Martin, RCDD, senior product manager for AFL’s Enterprise Cable division. “If the termination point of the outside plant cable is beyond 50 feet from the point of entrance into the building, the cable must be placed into a fire-protected pathway or spliced to a properly flame-rated inside plant cable.” Martin continued, “AFL’s LQ-Series Indoor/Outdoor Plenum Loose Tube cable, with combined outside and inside plant ratings, eliminates the need to transition to a separate flame-rated inside plant cable when in-building termination points are beyond 50 feet from the entrance location.” The cable construction consists of 12-fiber, gel-free buffer tubes stranded around a central strength member. The finished core is jacketed with a highly flame-retardant, UV-resistant thermoplastic. The LQ-Series cable is available with 12 up to 144 single-mode or multimode fibers.
