Stainless Steel in the Electrical Industry

IF YOU HAVE BEEN SHOPPING for an appliance in the last few years you probably know stainless steel is a very popular option. While many customers choose this finish for the sleek modern aesthetics, how many shoppers have stopped to consider the benefits that popularized stainless steel in industrial kitchens and food processing plants across the globe. Benefits inherit to the stainless-steel alloy such as corrosion resistance, chemical and bacteriological neutrality (with regard to food products) and durability. Stainless steel boasts not only improved corrosion resistance and durability but it also has higher tensile strength than its carbon steel counterparts and still maintains a high level of malleability that makes forming complex shapes and welding easy. Because stainless steel prevents contamination it helps maintain the freshness of food items prepared or stored in stainless steel containers. It’s resistance to water and chemicals Continued on page 8 6

makes it the perfect material for areas requiring frequent wash downs. In fact, the metal has proven so effective in these areas that the FDA has included stainless steel in their hygiene requirements governing food processing equipment and preparation. Stainless Steel’s use is not limited however to food processing, several other industries have similar requirements such as healthcare, pharmaceuticals, industrial refineries, tunnels, and many marine environments. Depending on the application there are various grades of stainless steel ranging from 301 to 630, with the most common two types being 304 and 316 (also known as A2 and A4). The differences between the grades can seem subtle with minute differences in the composition and presence of Minerals such as carbon, 8

chromium and nickel, but the corrosion protection and temperature tolerances can have a huge impact in certain environments. For instance, the presence of molybdenum in stainless steel 316 provides an increased resistance to specific types of corrosion, like those caused by meat/blood and salt in foods. Even more specific is the lower carbon content in 316L vs traditional 316 stainless steel that helps prevent weld decay. There are many standards and specifications for determining if your environment requires stainless steel and to which specification it should be produced such as DIN EN ISO specs like ISO 3506. In the electrical industry our products do not store or help in the preparation of food or production of pharmaceuticals, etc., but they are in the Continued on page 12

same environment and are required to meet the same standards. This understanding is key when selecting a manufacturer or supplier, because while it may be relatively easy to determine which spec or standard materials in the environment must adhere to it can be far harder to find a manufacturer who has a complete range of stainless steel products from soup to nuts (and bolts). This is especially true in the electrical industry where often times a stainless steel range is an afterthought or add on to the core offering. Many manufacturers and suppliers may advertise their “stainless steel range” but in fact only offer a small subset of products like straight lengths without fit12

Continued from page 8

tings, or incomplete accessories, leaving an installer stuck mid installation scrabbling to find an alternative. These limited offerings shrink even further when you consider the need for specific grades of stainless steel such as 316 or 316L, and you can forget about ancillary products like brackets, supports, cable grips and fasteners. That’s why Chalfant Manufacturing, a member for the OBO Bettermann Group, has taken special care to ensure our stainless steel offering is not only complete but also easy to understand and feature rich. Our most popular cable tray lines such as our NEMA rated ladder trays and selfconnecting cable trays like GR-Magic® and RKS-Magic® are all available in both stain-

less steel 304 and 316. These trays can be purchased with a full line of bends, fittings, tee’s and intersections, along with all the most popular accessories; including brackets, supports, clamps, grips fasteners and much more, over 3000 SKU’s in all. These options can be essential to maintaining the integrity of the overall electrical system, an issue often overlooked when selecting a manufacturer for a project. Does the company offer stainless steel conduit as well as cable tray? Can I purchase the strut and hangers from the same source or do I have to have multiple suppliers? Do the all parts work together as a complete system? There is a lot to consider when planning any electrical system and a bill of material can quickly increase in size and complexity. Let’s say you are planning a run of cable tray from one end of a food processing plant to the other. Your spec calls for 316 stainless steel and you have one main run of tray supported by strut with several drop off points. Consider all the individual components you need for this system to be installed. Threaded rods with hangers to support the strut, cable tray for the main run and branches, conduit running to and from the cable tray, connectors and fittings for each intersection, splice plates, nuts, bolts, drop out plates, dividers, wall brackets and hold down clamps to name a few. All these parts are in the same environment and subject to the same requirements, meaning for this installation all these parts must meet the 316 specification. It is important to make sure at the earliest stages that the manufacturers selected for this project can supply a complete range of products. A failure to do so could lead to costly change orders, project delays or a sacrifice in the quality of the installation. Just like shopping for a stainless steel appliance the local sales agent can be a useful tool to help you understand all the options a particular manufacturer might offer. They will be able to answer questions about the offering, support methods, tray styles and accessories as well as provide accurate and realistic expectations for lead times and delivery requirements. Stainless steel by nature is more expensive than other steel alloys so it’s important for all parties to know as much as possible about the requirements of the project. This will help to ensure everyone’s expectations are met and products are delivered on time and in budget. ❏

How Prefabricated Assemblies Can Speed Up Electrical Installations By Gene Ellis

CONTRACTORS WORKING ON REPETITIVE JOBS such as apartment

complexes, condos, dorms, etc. often look for ways to speed up the electrical wiring installation. Compounding the problem is competition among contractors driving the demand for tighter budgets, faster turnaround times, and limited resources. blends in with its surroundings. Pre-fabricated assemblies and modular wiring solutions can alleviate these pain points. Many contractors choose to work with manufacturers on pre-fabricated assembly solutions to reduce onsite labor and installation times, decrease parts ordered, increase jobsite safety, and remain competitive in the marketplace. A pre-fab system takes out the guess work on how much material to purchase for a job, but there are also many other benefits. Additional benefits of pre-fabricated assemblies include: Cost-savings: Manufacturers design and pre-build the pre-fabricated solution to contractors’ exact specifications in a controlled environment and to UL procedures. The controlled environment optimizes productivity by avoiding uncontrollable fac14

tors on the jobsite and leveraging built-in efficiencies such as dedicated workstations. Every employee in the fabrication shop performs the same job, similar to an assembly line, maintaining consistency in quality and delivery times. All said, a fully engineered pre-fab solution can save up to 60% installation. Reduced labor: Utilizing pre-fabricated assemblies also provides a cost savings in the elimination of wasted motion, or unproductive labor. That is the walking around job site, going back and forth to the fabrication shop, or finding the right tools and supplies. Elimination of wasted motion allows jobsite workers to focus on more productive tasks. Contractors also benefit from the time saved by assembling products and systems off-site in a controlled environment

not subject to fluctuations in weather or the timetable of subcontractors, which lessens the labor burden and ultimately reduces the job installation time. Reduced material mismanagement:

Branch wiring waste is one of the biggest misuses of material and causes of labor rework on the jobsite. Pre-fab gives contractors exactly what they need designed to spec, which reduces scrap material and the amount of time necessary for cleanup, and subsequently paying for labor cleanup. The cable is delivered prepped and ready to be quickly installed and final connections are ready to be made. Working with a distributor also requires different orders, multiple shipments, various boxes, and several shops and vendors to manage. Manufacturers specializing in pre-fabricated solutions Continued on page 16

allow for one order from one vendor and kitted/packaged materials delivered based on the job schedule. Safety: Traditional installation involves roto-slitting the armor leaving sharp edges and scrap on floor, increasing the likelihood of cuts, slips, and falls. With pre-fab installation there are not mounds of scrap and wire left behind or extra boxes and pallets. It also limits the time workers have to perform tasks on ladders and lifts and in harsh elements, such as heat and rain. Pre-fabricated solutions also streamline the manufacturing process to optimize to the total project time. During the quoting process, the engineer/contractor provides the project details and specifications the manufacturing engineering team where a project manager is assigned to that job. The initial design should be reviewed closely for: • Cable lengths

• Wall thickness • Device type • Overall layout After receipt of the drawings and project requirements, the initial design process begins. A typical unit layout is generated, allowing a visual confirmation of the project scope and contractor intent. Also produced is a detail report which provides specific information about each detail represented by numbered triangles on the shop drawings. This detail number shows on both the shop drawing and the detail report and corresponds to the label on the back of each device assembly. Electronic files, if available, are recommended as they expedite the design process. The complete order is boxed and palletized per order by room number, area, section, like products, etc. to minimize sort time at the jobsite. Each box contains

a set of shop drawings allowing the electrician to quickly identify the placement of each device assembly. These shipments are shipped direct and/or in staged shipments based on the timeline, for instance, a floor per week. Bolting a manufacturing facility onto a contractor’s shop not only provides a whole production line to leverage, but also the value-add services upfront: sales people do the quoting process, produce bills of material and material cost, provide estimated labor cost, and more. It is also advisable to work with a manufacturer in order to reap the benefits of the cost advantage of materials. Manufactures often have the competitive advantage based on buying power. Look for a manufacturer that is part of the IBEW union workforce, is trained and complies with UL standards, and has a UL listing. This allows the manufacturer to ship wiring assemblies Continued on page 18

Miller Safety Consultants

Protect Yourself Miller Safety Consultants — A Leader in Arc Flash Protection VINCE MILLER STARTED MILLER SAFETY CONSULTANTS, a

veteran owned business in 1999. The goal of the business was to provide cost effective safety consulting, employee training such as: confined space entry, fall protection, electrical safety and provide sales of electrical shock and flash protective equipment and fall protection equipment to businesses in the Washington DC area. Reliance Industries provided fall protection products and much of the sales and training was on behalf of the supplier. In 2000, the owner decided to retire from his business, and Vince decided to discontinue the fall protection line of his business and concentrate more in the electrical training and products. Vince had been a distributor for Certified Insulated Products (CIP), a manufacturer of electrical insulated tools and electrical arc flash clothing manufactured by Otex in Rochester, New York. As a distributor, Vince provided sales through his internet website and much through relationships with electrical contractors. His training was a classroom environment and was provided directly to customers but he also taught as a sub-contractor for other safety consulting companies and the Chesa-

28

peake Safety Council in Baltimore, Maryland. In 2005, Vince partnered with Vivid Learning Systems in Cascades, Washington to provide on-line training in safe work practices. Training in electrical safe work practices is still provided locally in the Washington DC area and as a partner with an electrical engineering firm and online. The training is based on the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) standards and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 70E standard. Miller Safety Consultants is now a distributor for Cementex USA, Burlington, New Jersey, for insulated tools and equipment and clothing from OTEX Protective, Rochester, New York. The majority of his sales of products are from the web-based store. Cementex is na-

tionally known for their quality equipment. Otex Protective is becoming more known for their quality clothing. For years, they have manufactured their products under other provider labels. Vince chose to not create his clothing line, but to sell the manufacturer product. Vince has worked with many electrical company employees to fine-tune the clothing to be more comfortable for the user. Working closely with the manufacturer, they have made slight changes in how the cloth pattern was modified to meet final production. An example is the lightweight 40 Calorie vented hood offered by Otex. The material is of the latest technology. The vented assembly is constructed for balance on the back of the hardhat and the airflow is 27 CFM to prevent fogging of the face shield and provide cooling to the worker. It took over a year to develop the product with the user prior to having the hood “flash tested”. This product is now standard issue with many electrical contractors. Being a small business and having quality providers has resulted in satisfied customers for Miller Safety Consultants. Being a direct supplier for OTEX Protective, another small business means customized customer needs can be met. ❏ For more information, visit Miller Safety Consultants at: www.electricalsafetysupply.com, email Vince at: sales@millersafetyltd.com or give him a call at (703)367-0404.

New Galvan Ground Clamps Solve NEC 250.70 Compliance Problem With UL Listing For Copper, Galvanized And Stainless Steel Rods NEC 250.70 Methods of Grounding and Bonding Conductor Connection To Electrodes clearly states, “Ground clamps shall be listed for the materials of the grounding electrode.” The problem is that most ground rod clamps are actually listed only for copper-coated rods. If one of these clamps is used with a galvanized or stainless steel ground rod, the installation does not meet code. Galvan Industries has solved this problem for electricians and electrical inspectors. Galvan’s new G-5 and SRC ground clamps are listed for copper coated, galvanized and stainless steel ground rods in both the United States and Canada. They are also listed for rebar (UFER) grounds. The listing includes direct burial in earth and concrete. The SRC’s UL listing covers use with ½-inch to ¾-inch copper-coated, galvanized and stainless steel rods, plus ¾-inch “full size” galvanized rods (0.750 - 0.765). In addition, the listing covers sizes #4, #5 and #6 rebar. The new G-5 is listed for ½-inch to 5/8-inch copper-coated, galvanized and stainless steel rods, 5/8-inch UL galvanized rods (0.539 to 0.555) and 5/8-inch “full size” galvanized rods ((0.625 -0.640). They are also listed for #4 rebar. Because of their wide UL listing range, the new Galvan G-5 and SRC eliminate the need to inventory other ground rod clamps. This saves money for both distributors and installers, and reduces errors caused by shipping or using the wrong clamp. New Galvan G-5 and SRC ground clamps are made in the USA. They meet the Buy American Requirement under Section 1605 of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009, and the Buy America Act, United States Codes 23 USC 313 and Code of Federal Regulations 23 CFR 635.410. Galvan products are stocked at strategic sites around the country to assure fast deliveries. For more information, visit www.galvanelectrical.com 30

New Fifth Generation EMC Cable Gland Joins Accessory Portfolio EMC Grounding Strap also added to the accessory product lineup HELUKABEL, one of the leading global manufacturers and suppliers of cable, wires and accessories, recently announced that it’s added two new cable accessories to its product portfolio – the HELUTOP MS-EP5 and the Cu Grounding Strap. The HELUTOP MS-EP5 is a fifth generation EMC gland that is used to ground a cable system and protect against EMC noise when bringing cables into panels or enclosures, while providing strain relief. The nickel-plated brass cable gland is IP68 – 5 bar rated and is cable of performing in environments that range in temperature from -40°C to +100°C. It is ideal for application areas such as manufacturing facilities, wind turbines, and railway engineering to name a few. The three main advantages when using the MS-EP5: Maximizing the number of EMC contacts – Increasing the total contact area between the cable’s shield and gland significantly improves the EMC protection at high frequencies. Strengthened EMC contacts – This reduces ohmic resistance, voltage drop and heat loss in applications that experience heavy mechanical stress, e.g. strong vibrations. Flexible contact system – This prevents damage to the shield during cable installation, which could impact EMC protection. The new Cu Grounding Strap is made from tinned copper and can be used in temperatures between -20°C to +125°C. It is ideal for eliminating EMC interference from ground loop, which can result from poor grounding in industrial applications such as the automotive industry, robotics and control panel building. It ranges in size from 10 – 4 AWG and comes in lengths between 100 and 500 mm. Additional sizes and lengths are available on request. HELUKABEL USA, Inc. is the wholly owned U.S. subsidiary of HELUKABEL GmbH, a leading international manufacturer of cables and wires with 30 locations throughout the world.
