FAS Rack PV Support System Offers Labor Savings, Excellent Functionality

U

tility-scale photo-voltaic systems must be constructed to have stringent specifications and typically have construction schedules that require innovative approaches to creating large-scale ground mounted arrays. For maximum effectiveness, these arrays must also feature flexible designs and reliably demonstrate long-term functionality and durability. FAS Rack™ from Legrand is a line of supports for ground-mounted photovoltaic arrays that are designed to meet the needs of a growing market for solar power generation in the US and Canada. FAS Rack speeds up the installation of utility-grade photovoltaic installations, and can cut on-site racking labor by up to 75 percent. What’s more, this system is easy to ship with prefabricated com-

ponents that allow for quick installation.

Designed-in Labor Savings The FAS Rack system is designed for fast installation with minimal on-site labor requirements. Prefabricated components eliminate time-consuming and expensive “stick built” installations. In fact, the entire system has been engineered to be installed by two-person crews without special tools or large equipment, such as hoists. This controls labor costs and simplifies project planning by making installation easily scalable. At a typical job site, five two-person crews can install approximately one megawatt of PV array per day. Labor saving features of the FAS Rack system include: • Support posts are standard 6” x 9” I-beams,

identical to those used in highway guardrails, so that commonly available equipment can be used to install them. Non-standard posts require special equipment that must be trucked over long distances. • Pier caps feature built in stops to precisely position grid tables and slotted mounting holes to speed installation. • Grid tables are custom matched to panel size with mounting holes ready for oneon-one connection. Crews set each table in place and screw it in with a self-threading screw in a formed hole for a better engagement. Bolt holes are slotted, allowing for rapid assembly in less-than-perfect field conditions. • Assembly requires fewer parts and a smaller number of stock Continued on page 8

Integrated Balance of System Solution:

The Next Solar Cost Savings Frontier Reducing BOS field labor and material costs on projects critical to achieving competitive system performance and pricing

s PV modules decline in price, the focus on cost savings increasingly turns to the Balance of Systems (BOS). Though material costs of BOS continue to rise (copper, aluminum, steel, etc), costs savings are derived primarily from the engineered integration of the BOS system

which can reduce labor and materials on the job site. Two recent studies concluded that BOS costs will likely exceed the costs of PV modules in the near term, becoming the highest cost portion of a solar system (this is including the racking system, which we

are including in BOS descriptions). According to GTM research, “…attention from developers and EPCs will increasingly be placed on a project’s balance-of-system (BOS) costs. Historically, innovation in the BOS space has been somewhat limited, Continued on page 16

FEATURE • Cooper B-Line given its smaller share of the total system. However, BOS costs will represent more than half of total project costs by 2012, and many BOS players are beginning to integrate their offerings into full-service component packages and positioning for greater share in the market via meaningful economic gains.” As well, the recently launched U.S. De-

Continued from page 14

partment of Energy SunShot Initiative “aims to dramatically decrease the total costs of solar energy systems by 75 percent before the end of the decade.” Much of the focus of this initiative is on BOS and labor savings advancements. During the last decade we have seen a series of shifts in the photovoltaic (PV) landscape. In 2002, the solar industry was

squarely focused on the modules, while the inverter was considered a mysterious box with a limited three year warranty that could be sourced from only a handful of suppliers in the market. Slowly, the focus changed to the inverter, which now comes with 10 year warranties and boasts many suppliers globally. Until recently, few thought about complete BOS, with integrators frequently building their own racking systems out of strut; stuffing their own combiner boxes; and cobbling together their BOS solutions from a series of manufacturers via their local electrical distributor. Thankfully, the industry has matured and many of these “homemade” solutions have abated over time with suppliers like Cooper B-Line stepping in with high quality, volume manufacturing. This has contributed to the decreasing installed cost of PV. There is, however, much to improve upon where significant BOS cost savings can occur, which many manufacturers are now addressing. Take for instance, the current state of connecting modules to combiner boxes. Most contractors currently do all this work manually; running PV cable the length of the combiner box to module connection point, cutting and stripping the wires, crimping their contacts, assembling the connectors , attaching ID labels and terminating the string in the combiner box. This will be repeated dozens, hundreds or thousands of times depending on the scale of the project. When considering the fact that this is usually completed by a highpriced electrician, cost can become a major concern. Like days of old, with homemade racking systems and combiner boxes, this practice often results in more cost, more connection points, more leak paths and an increased potential for quality and safety Continued on page 18 issues due to human FOR FREE INFO, CIRCLE 42 ON READER SERVICE CARD

Additionally, it is questionable whether testing is conducted on every one of those connection points – i.e. pull, hipot and continuity testing – thus further increasing potential human error trouble spots. These spots are not only dangerous down the road, but can also represent a significant cost to fix. Now consider the modern BOS alter-

while also significantly increasing the quality and certainty of long-term system performance. This modern solution, available through B-Line, replaces a highly laborious and time consuming process all with a simple plug and play solution. BOS breakthroughs like this are resulting in the reduction in system costs while also driving solar towards grid parity. Companies with integrated total BOS solutions are driving innovation and cost reductions across the system to benefit the entire solar industry. Part of what differentiates the integrated approach to BOS is how the engineering teams from each product work together to optimize layouts and system designs to achieve material and labor savings. By engineering across product disciplines, designers focus on reducing labor and materials in the field. In the case of racking, manufacturers may design their solution and provide a quote looking at only this one component of the system. In comparison, the integrated approach allows designers to review the electrical design parameters of the project to ensure racking, cable, cable management and combiners are all designed in one integrated fashion to maximize efficiency and cost savings opportunities on each project. A complete BOS engineered solution looks at every angle of the project, ensuring consideration of every component in tandem rather than in a vacuum. This reduces cost while increasing certainty of construction logistics, material costs and performance of PV asset. A real world example of this approach includes recent work on a 10 MW project which had received three quotes from three different companies to provide single component solutions - racking, combiner boxes and PV cable solutions. These are standard solutions at a standard price. Instead of looking at single components, the B-Line technology utilizes an integrated approach that presented a total BOS solution package. This approach allowed our BOS solutions to reduce racking costs by up to 15 percent and reduce pier requirements by up to 33 percent. Additionally, by matching our racking configuration to the string sizing of the system we were able to reduce PV cable costs by up to 50 percent while also reContinued on page 20 ducing the labor on

Long Life 12-Year Rated Batteries Now Standard on all Falcon Electric’s SG® Series Uninterruptible Power Supplies Popularity of “Wide-Temperature” Industrial-Grade Battery Significantly Reduces the Cost of UPS Ownership and Lowers Carbon Footprint

F

alcon Electric, Inc., an award-winning manufacturer of Uninterruptible Power Systems (UPSs) and power conversion solutions, today announced that it will now include 12-year rated valve-regulated lead acid (VRLA) batteries in their popular SG Series UPS product line. The SG Series is the company’s award-winning power protection solution for IT, network and laboratory applications. The SG Series features a dual-conversion, on-line topology that is designed to provide automated systems, instruments, computers and other sensitive electronics superior power protection during a power outage. The widetemperature batteries are designed to operate at -20°C to 50°C. Standard UPS batteries are rated for operation from 0°C to 40°C. By operating at a wider temperature range, the batteries have an exceptionally long life – up to 12 years – at room temperature and 4 years at 50°C. “We typically get calls for battery replacement anywhere from 4 to 6 years with standard batteries,” said Paul Newman, V.P. of Manufacturing at Falcon Electric. “These long life batteries are designed for military and industrial applications and as such now give our IT and laboratory users the exceptional value proposition of not replacing UPS batteries for 10 years or longer, which represents a significant savings in time, money and the environment.” Since a typical UPS battery is housed in a line-interactive UPS – requiring battery power to keep the UPS output within specifications – the battery life is cut in half requiring replacement every 2 to 3 years. By using a double-conversion on-line UPS with wide temperature batteries, maintenance cycles can be extended to 10 to12 years, saving resources, time and costs. As one of the most reliable on-line UPS designs on the market, Falcon’s SG Series offers users the latest communications options allowing attached devices to receive signals and notifications of

22

alarm conditions when the UPS is on battery power. For example, a typical supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system may need a simple “dry-contact” signal. In this case, Falcon offers an optional dry-contact card. Traditional computer network applications require unattended OS shutdown and easy monitoring of the UPS system. Falcon’s UPSilon® shutdown and management software supports Windows® platforms, including Windows 7, Vista, as well as Novell NetWare® 5 & 6, LINUX and FreeBSD to meet these requirements. For remote management, users may purchase an optional SNMP/HTTP agent board – the more secure IPv6 version that installs directly inside the UPS and provides a TCP-IP addressable, 10/100 Ethernet communications for remote monitoring and management. The 12-year life batteries are also standard in Falcon’s SSG® Series Industrial-Grade UPS. Falcon will start this upgrade on March 1.

Electrical Products & Solutions • March 2013

Pricing for the SG Series starts at $1,499.00 for the 1500VA model (SG1.5K-1T). For more information on the SG Series UPS, contact Falcon at 800-842-6940 or email info@falconups.com. Silent Knight Systems Provide Alfred University Long-Term Fire Protection School Campus Attains Maintenance and Cost Efficiencies as Upgrades to Advanced Farenhyt Technology Continue

S

ilent Knight by Honeywell (NYSE: HON) and integrator FSC Systems LLC announce a continuation of Farenhyt fire alarm system installations on the campus of Alfred University, Alfred, N.Y. In the process of upgrading its overall level of fire protection, the school has made use of more advanced detection, such as aspiration and carbon monoxide (CO), while taking advantage of the Farenhyt line’s cost-saving retrofit qualities. FSC Systems LLC, of Jamestown, N.Y., began installing Silent Knight’s Farenhyt technology on the 52-building campus eight years ago, as school officials sought to replace an older, patchwork of fire alarm systems. The performance of the initial Farenhyt equipment installed by FSC provided proven reliability to school officials, who continue to call on the integrator for on-going upgrades of older systems. “FSC put our first system in years ago,” says Mike Neiderbach, Alfred University’s executive director for capital operations and legal affairs. “We like the way it works, it’s pretty simple to handle, and we don’t have problems with it. In my book, that’s a big thing.” Brian Dodge, physical plant director at Alfred, says many of the buildings had older zone systems, some more than 30 years old, and the college wanted to move to addressable technology. “We wanted a system that was modern, that could identify specific locations where there was a problem,” explains Neiderbach. “Some of our buildings’ older systems were also not user-friendly, particularly for the fire department.” The new systems’ addressable technology provides detailed information on the type of issue detected and its exact location. This type of specific information is also displayed on remote annunciators installed with the new systems at entryways of buildings to quickly inform firefighters and facility/security officials. More than half of the campus’s buildings are

24

now protected by Farenhyt fire alarm systems. Dodge asserts the flexibility of a fire alarm system is “key”. Farenhyt systems have been deployed in buildings of assorted sizes, from the 60,000 square-foot Powell Campus Center to single-family housing units. “We’re able to buy small systems, not just big systems,” says Dodge. “We basically tailor the size to what we need.” And it will be easy to scale up the Farenhyt systems should the buildings be expanded and added to in the future, says Dodge. The Alfred campus made use of the Farenhyt line’s unique retrofit advantages by reusing much of the existing infrastructure for upgrades, including wiring, detector sounder bases and more. That saves money both in terms of materials and labor. Additional cost savings has been realized simply through the lack of maintenance needed with the new systems. The older system was a constant drain on both funds and time, explains Dodge, requiring constant replacement of smoke detectors. “We’ve definitely cut that way down with the new Silent Knight system,” says Dodge. “We have so many buildings and a very small staff to go out and check everything out – the more bullet-proof everything is, the better.” While most of the installs on campus have been fairly straight-forward, FSC did install some specialized equipment, including explosion-proof technology in school chemistry labs, monitored by the new fire alarm system. With New York being one of many states to set new CO detection requirements for commercial sleeping areas, CO detectors tied to the new fire alarm systems were installed throughout all Alfred residence halls. To control the flow of smoke from a fire, the new fire alarms in several campus buildings were interfaced with the energy management systems to force fans to shut down and control other mechanical systems to respond as necessary.

Electrical Products & Solutions • March 2013

As the university’s needs adapt, officials may look at other technologies that integrate with the Farenhyt systems, such as mass notification capabilities. “The system is flexible that way – we’re able to adapt,” suggests Neiderbach. FSC is now working on a large Farenhyt system in Alfred’s health and wellness center, which is currently under construction, according to Shawn M. Gorgan, vice president of service operations at FSC Systems. It will include a Fire Alarm Aspirating Smoke Technology (FAAST) system to provide Very Early Warning Fire Detection in the new gymnasium and track area. A highly-sensitive detection system, FAAST draws continuous air samples through a network of pipes to immediately detect the slightest trace of smoke, even in the most highly challenging environments. Customers appreciate the advanced technologies and capabilities, says Gorgan. But the true value to them boils down to some basics, he adds. “They don’t get calls, it works and it’s easy to use – that’s what they want,” he says. “We’re very big on safety here. If I send my kids to a college, I expect the first and foremost thing is to keep them safe,” says Dodge. “That’s one of our big reasons for upgrades – more coverage, more safety, a better system.” To reach a local Farenhyt Engineered Systems Distributor, contact a Silent Knight Regional Sales Manager. Visit www.farenhyt.com for more comprehensive fire alarm systems information. ❏

Cooper Industries’ CoSPECSM Resource Center Featuring Cooper B-Line Products Simplifies the Design Process CoSPEC’s comprehensive CAD design resource is available directly from the Cooper B-Line Website

C

ooper Industries plc, a global provider of electrical solutions, is making it even easier to select, view and download design content including CAD, BIM, PDMS and graphics files with its new Cooper Specifier Center (CoSPECSM). Set to become one of the most comprehensive resources for design content in a wide range of markets, CoSPECSM will launch with on-demand content for Cooper BLine’s cable tray products and gradually expand to include additional products from Cooper BLine and other Cooper Industries’ divisions. Created to help simplify the design process, CoSPEC allows design professionals to select, view and download Cooper B-Line products in nearly 100 different CAD, BIM, PDMS and graphic formats. Content is available in both 2D and 3D non-proprietary formats, as well as native, proprietary formats for trouble-free integration into many design

platforms, including Autodesk products. Engineers, designers and drafters can now incorporate Cooper B-Line products into designs quickly and accurately by simply visiting the CoSPEC website. “Our new CoSPEC CAD catalog isn’t just a great innovation for Cooper Industries and Cooper B-Line, but also a fantastic resource for engineering and design professionals,” said Cooper Chairman and CEO, Kirk Hachigian. “Instead of having to search for product information and downloads in multiple places, CoSPEC now offers users one, easy-to-use resource to find product information and design content. It really is a win-win solution and one that we’re very proud to unveil.” Beginning with Cooper B-Line’s cable tray product family in March, CoSPEC will continually be expanded throughout the year to eventually include Cooper B-Line’s full line

of products as well as products from other Cooper divisions. For improved efficiency, the CoSPEC site will allow users to browse through available products and select appropriate SKUs as needed. From there, users can view products in either a 2D layout or a 3D rendering that includes pertinent product information. Once the user is comfortable with the selected product, content can be downloaded in any one of nearly 100 different formats to be used in their design. CoSPEC, with its CAD, BIM, PDMS and graphics catalog, contains world class tools to help speed the design process, and is available globally with around-the-clock access and an unmatched depth and breadth of electronic design resources. For more information on the new CoSPEC tool from Cooper B-Line, visit www.cooperbline.com/CoSPEC.

Product FOCUS Solar at No Cost: AllEarth Renewables announces zero cost residential and community-scale solar program Home-state program features Vermont manufactured technology Vermont solar manufacturer and the largest developer of solar in the state, AllEarth Renewables, has announced a new program to finance solar at no cost to homeowners, businesses, non-profits, and public institutions. The residential lease is unique in the state by offering a no cost lease for homeowners to net meter with solar at or below their electric rates and be given the opportunity to fully own the system at a significantly reduced cost after 7 years. These projects will consist of between 1 to 4 Vermont-manufactured AllSun solar trackers. The community-scale solar lease features a similar no-cost program but with a guaranteed electric bill savings of 10 percent a year for larger customers, such as businesses, non-profits, schools, municipalities, and other institutions. These projects will consist of 10 trackers or more and can cover all or a percentage of the customer’s annual electricity demands. The lease payments under both options in this “home state” program will be at or below the customer’s electricity savings, producing a zero netcost agreement. This type of third-party financing model now makes up the majority of solar installation nationally, but isn’t normally available throughout smaller markets like Vermont. “As a local manufacturer, we are excited to again be able to offer to our Vermont customers a financing option for residential, business and community projects, giving them the opportunity to net meter their energy and produce immediate savings on their electric bills,” said David Blittersdorf, President and CEO of AllEarth Renewables. The new program mirrors one that AllEarth Renewables offered in past years, which financed more than $18 million in residential installations and solar orchards for businesses and communities around the state. The company has installed more than 1,400 AllSun Trackers and is an Inc. 500 company for fastest growing companies nationwide. The solar projects will all feature the dual-axis AllSun Tracker, which was designed and is manufactured in Williston and produces up to 45 percent more energy than fixed rooftop solar by tracking the sun each day. The tracker won a Green Product of the Year award in 2012. At the end of last year, AllEarth Renewables partnered with Green Lantern Capital, National Life, Green Mountain Power, to finance projects for the City of Rutland, Cold Hollow Cider Mill in Waterbury, Woods Market Garden in Brandon, and the Town of Williston.
