Welcome

I would like to extend a warm welcome to what will be a wonderful weekend. I know people from all over Wiltshire and beyond are here in Salisbury to recognise and celebrate our Armed Forces and the vital role they perform in protecting us and our country. We are also honouring our veterans who have served our country so well. It is fitting that Salisbury is the host for this year’s Armed Forces Day after we have worked so closely together to completely recover from last year’s unprecedented attack in the city - your positive response is testament to the spirit and resilience of the people of Salisbury. Wiltshire is a proud military county which shares a rich and long history with the Armed Forces who, along with their families, are very much part of the social fabric of the community. Many military families have chosen to make Wiltshire their permanent home – including me.

I was recently elected the Mayor of the City of Salisbury after a career which included 26 years in the infantry. It therefore gives me the greatest pleasure, as one of the many veterans living in Salisbury, to welcome all elements of our Armed Forces both serving and retired to our wonderful city. We feel very honoured that Salisbury was chosen to host the 2019 Armed Forces Day National Event celebrations. I know I speak for everyone living in Salisbury and the

SalisburyAFD

Armed Forces Day is one of the most important dates in the military calendar. This year I’m delighted we are extending the celebrations over three days, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I hope you have a fantastic time. Thank you for showing your support. I look forward to seeing you all enjoying the wonderful programme of events throughout the weekend. Baroness Scott of Bybrook OBE, Leader of Wiltshire Council The military is a lot less visible than it once was and fewer people than ever have either served or know people who have served. So we particularly value strong relationships like those we enjoy in Salisbury and Wiltshire, and welcome you helping others to understand us and the value we bring to the community. Thank you for your support to the Armed Forces and the Armed Force Covenant, and I hope you will join me in thanking our military and their families for their service. General Sir Nick Carter, Chief of the Defence Staff

surrounding area, when I say that we are very much looking forward to meeting you all. Salisbury has had its ups and downs in the last 15 months and the city is very appreciative of the support it received from our Armed Forces in 2018. As the Sunday Times Best Places to Live in 2019 reported recently, Salisbury is a great place to live, which is in part due to your efforts. We stand ready to welcome our service community for what I know will be a great weekend. John Walsh, Mayor of the City of Salisbury, (Ex Royal Anglian)

What is Armed Forces Day? Now in its eleventh year, Armed Forces Day is an opportunity for the nation to say thank you to our servicemen and women, past and present, as they protect the British population, prevent conflict and stand ready to fight those who wish our country harm. It is also an opportunity to show gratitude to the wider Armed Forces community including cadets, veterans and service families for their commitment and sacrifice.

“ As the Army’s Regional Commander for the South West, it is a privilege to support Wiltshire Council in delivering this year’s National Event in Salisbury. “ As well as a fantastic parade, there are opportunities to meet and talk to many members of the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force. By attending, you will show them your support and you will gain an insight to what they do every single day of every year for our nation.”

This year, Salisbury hosts the Armed Forces Day national event. Salisbury has many current and historic links to the Armed Forces and is home to several Army bases, where many Salisburians serve, including Bulford Camp, Tidworth Camp and Salisbury Plain, one of the UK’s biggest military training areas. Your guide to the weekend If you can’t get to the city centre, you can watch the parade live on the big screens at Hudson’s Field.

Whether you’re joining us just for one day or here for all three days, there’s so much to see and do as you #showyoursupport for our military personnel, present and past, and their families. There’s some fabulous music to enjoy on all three nights – we have The Feeling on Friday, The Upbeat Beatles and Kaiser Chiefs will rock Hudson’s Field on Saturday, and Björn Again will bring the three-day spectacular to a close on Sunday. For our younger visitors, Disco Dion will be keeping them entertained on Friday between 3pm and 8pm in Salisbury City Council’s community marquee. Our Shine for Salisbury competition winners won the chance to perform in front of thousands on the main stage, voted by the public in a Facebook poll. You can see Duck n Cuvver on Friday, The Treblemakers on Saturday and Salisbury Rock Choir on Sunday afternoon. Over in BBC Wiltshire’s village there is more live music, the chance to try your hand at being a presenter and The Listening Project. A highlight will be the military parade on Saturday morning through the city centre.

SalisburyAFD

Why not enjoy a pint while you’re here at one of Wadworth’s three bars? The Devizes-based brewery has created a bespoke ale – Salisbury Armed Forces IPA – and is donating 5p from every pint sold over the three days to our main official charity partner, SSAFA. You can find the ale in the Pig and Whistle Bar, Henry’s Bar and the Wadworth VIP Bar. Celebrating and saying thank you to our service personnel and their families is at the heart of Armed Forces Day National Event. Make sure you visit the military village where you can see a host of military vehicles and kit and meet members of the Armed Forces, and hear about their experiences and the role their units play in today’s Armed Forces. There’s a varied line-up on both the main stage and in the main arena over the weekend and everyone’s eyes will be turning to the skies on Saturday afternoon for the air show including the iconic aircraft of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Sunday focuses on veterans and young people – those who have served and those who may serve – with a commemoration and drumhead service, supported by the Royal British Legion, with the Bishop of Salisbury and padres leading the service. There will also be the opportunity to help the event attempt to break a record by creating the world’s largest human poppy in the main arena.

Main bands and performers

Kaiser Chiefs Kaiser Chiefs seventh album Duck is released on 26 July 2019. The quintet, vocalist Ricky Wilson, Andrew “Whitey” White (guitar), Simon Rix (bass), Peanut (keyboards) and Vijay Mistry (drums) headline the main stage on Saturday. The band began writing almost immediately after the release of 2016’s Stay Together but it wasn’t until the start of 2018 that Duck started to take shape. Duck finds one of the most successful British guitar bands of the millennium harking back to the everyday explorations and poignant observations of their breakthrough early albums. The Feeling Ivor Novello award-winning, Brit Award-nominated band The Feeling burst onto the scene in 2006. Debut album Twelve Stops And Home was a huge success, selling 1.5m copies worldwide. The Feeling quickly established themselves as a fantastic live act, something they’ve demonstrated everywhere from Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage to the Queen’s back garden at Buckingham Palace to Wembley Stadium. Following their 2016 self-titled album, the most critically-acclaimed release of their career, the band went on hiatus. They decided to play a one-off show in 2018 at the Apollo Theatre, London, which sold out in minutes. The 12 Years and Home tour sold out and marked the band’s triumphant return. Now they are coming to Armed Forces Day National Event in Salisbury where they will headline the main stage on Friday 28 June. Björn Again Internationally renowned band Björn Again will headline the main stage at Hudson’s Field on Sunday performing many of ABBA’s greatest hits, bringing the three-day spectacular to a close. Björn Again is hailed as the most successful act of its kind in the world, has been acknowledged by ABBA’s Agnetha, Benny and Björn, and played more than 5,000 performances in 72 countries. The Upbeat Beatles The Upbeat Beatles bring powerhouse vocals, precision harmonies and tight musicianship to the stage on Saturday night and have an easy, happy rapport with any crowd. Eight bars of “Twist and Shout” and you will know why! The show takes you through the Fab Four’s long and winding road from the early Cavern days through Beatlemania, America, Sergeant Pepper to Abbey Road, with narrative and full multimedia presentation.

Royal Navy The Royal Navy is known as the Senior Service and can trace its history back to the 8th Century. In the past year the Royal Navy has operated around the globe; from diplomatic missions with our partners and allies in the Pacific to carrying out operation patrols in the Gulf, the South Atlantic and the Mediterranean. Despite being a land-locked county, Wiltshire shares many connections with the Royal Navy. In total there have been seven Royal Navy ships named after the city of Salisbury starting in 1698 when the first HMS Salisbury, a 48-gun frigate, was built to fight the French. The last warship to bear the name was an Air Direction frigate, built during the 1950s which served

SalisburyAFD

throughout the Cold War as the lead ship of the ‘Salisbury class’ of four frigates and was decommissioned in 1985. Other Wiltshire connections include HMS Royal Arthur, a Royal Navy Leadership Training establishment at Corsham near Chippenham that operated from 1947 to 1993, and Upavon Airfield, the first purpose-built airfield in the country to train Army and Navy pilots for the Royal Flying Corps. Today, Salisbury Plain is still used to train Fleet Air Arm aircrew and engineers, who operate across the Royal Navy and Royal Marines using the Salisbury Plain’s vast training areas for realistic conditions and challenging environments.

British Army From the perspective of the Army, Salisbury Plain might very well be described as the ‘heart of the British Army’. Salisbury Plain has been a significant training area since 1898. The 150 square miles is now the key training area in the UK, having supported live artillery firing for over 100 years, with the School of Artillery being established at Larkhill in 1915. Hundreds of thousands of troops were accommodated in now forgotten tented

SalisburyAFD

camps right across the Salisbury Plain and southern Wiltshire one hundred years ago. It was also an important training and staging area in advance of the Normandy Landings 75 years ago. Today, the Salisbury Plain is home to many thousands of soldiers and their families. Key amongst them is the 3rd Division, the UK’s premier war fighting deployable division, which was an assault division on D-Day and was once commanded by Field Marshall Montgomery himself.

Royal Air Force The RAF has a strong relationship with Salisbury and is proud to be taking part in this year’s Armed Forces Day. We have historic links with Old Sarum where, during the Second World War, thousands of ground personnel and virtually all RAF motor transport vehicles, destined for Normandy, passed through throughout the D-Day operations. As D-Day arrived, there were 34 aircraft at Old Sarum Airfield from three different squadrons (658, 659 and 662) waiting to be called forward. RAF personnel played a vital role in the decontamination of Salisbury last year and we take part in many aspects of the military training that takes place on Salisbury Plain each year.

SalisburyAFD

One of the highlights of this year’s Armed Forces Day will be the flying display which will take place over Old Sarum on Saturday 29 June. Over the weekend you can expect to see the world famous RAF Aerobatic Team, The Red Arrows; the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight with its incredible Second World War aircraft. Tutor, an RAF trainer aircraft, will also display, subject to weather conditions and serviceability.

Parade Route

On Saturday 29 June, Armed Forces Day begins with a fantastic parade in Salisbury City Centre. Starting from the Cathedral Close at 9,45am, troops will march past the historic Guildhall market square where they will perform a salute to HRH the Princess Royal as the world famous Red Arrows of the RAF fly overhead. With over 1,300 regular and reserve personnel, veterans, cadets and blue light services taking part, as well as military horses, working dogs and vehicles, it is sure to be a spectacular display. The parade will be led by mounted dutymen from the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment and conclude with marching contingents honoured with the Freedom of Salisbury. Look out for the Royal Hospital Chelsea Pensioners in their distinctive Scarlet Coats. The Royal Navy and Royal Marines bring The Band of HM Royal Marines Portsmouth to join the parade as well as a contingent of sailors and Royal Marines from across the Naval Service. The public will be able to pick out the sailors from their Naval Cap Tallies which denote the individual ships, units and groups that they come from. SalisburyAFD

With the British Army making up the largest contingency of the parade you will have the opportunity of seeing representation from many of its the Regiments and Corps, including 1st Battalion MERCIANS, The Royal Armoured Corps, 22 Engineer Regiment Royal Engineers, 1st Military Working Dog Regiment and The Queen’s Gurkha Signals, with musical accompaniment from six military bands who will entertain you with a medley of music. At the rear of the parade the Royal Artillery Band will proudly lead 32 Regiment Royal Artillery, 1 Military Police Brigade and the Royal Wessex Yeomanry who hold the Freedom of Salisbury. The Band and Bugles of the RIFLES will lead the final Freedom of Salisbury contingent, The 5th Battalion RIFLES, in their distinctive light infantry quick march followed by a Warrior, ending the parade in style. Supported by the magnificent Band of the RAF Regiment, over one hundred RAF personnel will take part in the parade. There will be a contingent of fifty members of the Queen’s Colour Squadron, famed for its drill; a further fifty personnel from RAF Odiham.

Shine For Salisbury

Our Shine for Salisbury winners – come and see them on the main stage! The Shine for Salisbury competition gave local bands, acts and performers the chance to compete to play on the main stage over Armed Forces Day weekend.

The Treblemakers Don’t miss them on the main stage at 6pm – 6.30pm on Saturday 29 June

The winners were chosen by the public in a Facebook vote with Duck n Cuvver, The Treblemakers and Salisbury Rock Choir coming out on top. Duck n Cuvver See them on the main stage 6pm – 6.30pm Friday 28 June

Duck n Cuvver are father and son-in-law duo, Robert Hardie and Ian Lawes who play a mix of classic hits from across the decades and some self-penned songs. One in particular, called Hopscotchman, has taken off and is now a popular number with fans.

The Treblemakers are a Salisbury based covers band and have been performing for five years and have played more than 200 gigs. The band plays a wide variety of music from Elvis to Led Zeppelin via rock, pop, ska, disco, funk, glam, and music from the 1960s, 70s and 80s. The Treblemakers are Kenny and Ysanne Duke on vocals, John Fennelly on lead guitar, drummer Tim Clissold and Trevor Hannant on bass guitar. Salisbury Rock Choir Catch them on the main stage 2pm – 2.30pm Sunday 30 June

Ian taught himself to play guitar from the age of 15 and he taught Rob to play. They have been performing together as Duck n Cuvver for around five years. So, why Duck n Cuvver? Both are former soldiers and their band name is a cheeky play on “squaddie” terms as well as referring to covering pop songs. Both served in the army and between them have completed tours of Northern Ireland, Bosnia and Iraq. They have performed many gigs in support of charity, Cystic Fibrosis being one close to their hearts at the moment, and have helped raise funds for both the Royal British Legion and SSAFA. SalisburyAFD

Salisbury Rock Choir is much more than a choir - it’s a multi layered singing experience made up of everyday people, doing something they love and creating something very special in the meantime with the power of music. Performing here are members from the Salisbury Rock Choir led by their choir leader Charlotte MutchJones. They say they are overjoyed to have been chosen to sing at this incredible event and hope to get you up on your feet dancing and singing along! They rehearse every Thursday, 8pm at the Old Sarum Community centre and always welcome new faces.

Understanding MSKI, reducing risk and optimising soldier health and performance.

‘SOLDIER ATHLETE’ coliseum – optimising soldier health and performance

Musculo-skeletal injury (MSKI) is a complex and growing problem. It is the primary cause of medical downgrade and discharge within Defence and has a substantial personal impact upon the capability of the British Army. Understanding the causation and mitigation of MSKI is therefore crucial for maintaining a healthy, engaged, effective and operational work force. The causative factors of MSKI are complex and vary for everyone and negotiating the risks can be confusing; especially when undertaking a challenging and changing career. The MSKI2 campaign provides the framework by which an individual, the Command and the organisation might best navigate these factors and build an environment which promotes healthy living within a professional and occupational setting. Through the promotion of good health and the development of an inclusive lifestyle, culture and environment which facilitates this, the MSKI2 campaign will support the individual and the Whole Force to optimise employment

46

and deployment throughout their military career. The soldier athlete concept is the foundation of the MSKI2 campaign. The coliseum (see above) focuses on those areas of MSKI causation within the military and the subsequent health promotion and injury prevention strategies that might be employed to optimise soldier performance. The Health Performance Framework outlines the evidence-based best practice goals by which personnel might optimise their personal health and reduce their risk of MSKI. The framework has individual, team and organisational benchmarks (within each of the soldier athlete pillars) to inform, educate and motivate health behaviour changes. In addition, wearable and nearable technology will be employed to support this process and provide feedback on performance against these benchmarks; enabling the individual to monitor their performance against the soldier athlete models and reduce their MSKI risk.

Follow the Army Physical Training System (APTS). If you are away from your Unit conducting PT on your own contact your PTI to explain the Lone Soldier Physical Training Programme (LSPTP). 3. Aim to achieve 150 mins of moderate intensity or 75 mins of high intensity PT per week. 4. Keep your running and tabbing mileage down. Do not exceed 20 miles per week and vary the terrain you run/tab on. 5. Understand the value of integrating recovery into your training. 6. Extreme conditioning methods increase your risk of injury and undermine the APTS. They should be avoided.

Human Poppy Attempt - Sunday 29 June need around 4,000 of you to join us in the main arena on Sunday afternoon as we make our record bid.

Help us to create the largest poppy! We’re aiming to create the largest human poppy and we need your help. We want to create this beautiful spectacle as a legacy of Armed Forces Day National Event (AFDNE) 2019 in Salisbury. To do that we will

We’ll be creating the shape based on the distinctive Royal British Legion poppy, a symbol that is recognised UK wide. We’ll be using different coloured ponchos – red, black and green – to form the stem, leaf and flower head of the poppy with the image being captured from above using a drone. We’ll be inviting the first 4,000 people through the gates at Hudson’s Field on Sunday afternoon to take part in the record breaking attempt. Come and join us and let’s make this year’s AFDNE a true record breaker!

Legacy Tapestry over the past few months creating a legacy tapestry that is on show over this weekend. Community groups and organisations across the county worked with artist Suzie Gutteridge, from Salisbury, with each designing and producing a tapestry square that depicted their support for the military.

Commemorating the Armed Forces with needles and thread Communities across Wiltshire have been stitching their support for the Armed Forces

SalisburyAFD

Those pieces were then stitched together to create one large AFDNE community legacy tapestry that will be displayed for years to come. Even BBC Wiltshire radio presenter Ben Prater has made his own contribution, visiting Suzie’s studio to help sew on one of the final poppies as the 18 squares, one for each of Wiltshire’s community areas, were sewn together.

PROUD TO

SUPPORT

OUR ARMED FORCES “ As an army veteran myself, I recognise the significance of National Armed Forces Day. The suicide rates and high instance of PTSD are prevalent among those touched by military service, many are tragically and disgracefully left without support by government. The charities that have had to be set up to help our military forces, do a great job, but the government must do more to support and protect those despatched into dangerous environments around the world. Protection of its citizens, is the first role of government. The decision to send UK military personnel into areas of conflict, is the most important decision any politician can take. Their duty must include protecting the physical and mental wellbeing of military personnel. Government must also take lifelong responsibility for military personnel, who operate under orders.
