WELCOME
other seaside air shows across the country to bring these over, we do hope you will enjoy seeing their debut displays!
Welcome to the 2019 Southport Air Show, a weekend of exhilarating aviation and a great family day out, bringing visitors from all over the North West and UK. The Air Show has carved its history in Southport for 28 years and along with the other events, brings over 250,000 visitors to the town each year. The Friday night is growing year on year and really gives visitors a different experience to the Saturday and Sunday. There are planes with pyros and superb stunts and a grand firework finale – it is great to see the crowds enjoying themselves! One of my personal highlights for this year is the Swedish Air Force Historical Flight who are bringing the Saab Viggen and the Saab Tunnan for the first time to Southport. We worked extremely hard with our flying director and
Another first this year is the Norwegian Air Force Historical Squadron T-33 Shooting Star and the Black Cats displaying for the first time in Southport with the Wildcat. The RAF Typhoon and Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) will be displaying on Friday, Saturday and Sunday – the noise of this RAF jet always leaves visitors looking up to the sky in wonder and I always enjoy the poignant display of the BBMF. We will also see the Tucano display for the last time ever as the aircraft is retired by the RAF in October. I would like to personally thank you for purchasing this programme, by doing so we will donate 10% to No.281 Southport Squadron RAF Cadets – supporting the future of our air force. I would also like to take this opportunity to say thank you to Sefton Council and my team who deliver this event each year. Also a thanks to the partners and sponsors of the air show. Without the involvement of everybody this great event wouldn’t happen. Seeing the crowds enjoying the day is really rewarding, please do share your Air Show experience with us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using #SouthportTime #SouthportAirShow Thank you for supporting us and enjoy this year’s show. Swedish Air Force Historical Flight
SAAB VIGGEN The Saab 37 Viggen Thunderbolt is a retired Swedish single-seat, single-engine, short-medium range combat aircraft. Development work on the type was initiated at Saab in 1952 and, following the selection of a radical delta wing configuration, the resulting aircraft performed its first flight on 8 February 1967 and entered service in 21 June 1971. It was the first canard design produced in quantity. The Viggen was also the most advanced fighter jet in Europe until the introduction of the Panavia Tornado into operational service in 1981. Several distinct variants of the Viggen were produced to perform the roles of strike fighter (AJ 37), aerial reconnaissance (SF 37), maritime patrol aircraft (SH 37) and a two-seat trainer (SK 37). In the late 1970s, the all-weather fighter-interceptor aircraft JA 37 variant was introduced. In November 2005, the Viggen was retired from service by the Swedish Air Force, the only operator, having been replaced by the newer Saab JAS 39 Gripen.

BATTLE OF BRITAIN MEMORIAL FLIGHT The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) is a household name and a national institution. Just about everyone will stop in their tracks as the familiar Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster three-ship formation appears overhead. But it wasn’t always that way... The modern BBMF was created from more humble beginnings, and though its paid the same mark of respect, it did so under tight constraints. It has gone from being a loose collection of ‘obsolete types’ tucked away in the

corner of various hangars, to caring for priceless assets of British aviation heritage, with its own headquarters. Wg Cdr Peter Thompson DFC, then Station Commander at RAF Biggin Hill was primarily responsible for its formation. After gaining his wings in the summer of 1940, Peter flew Hurricanes during the Battle of Britain. September 15th 1940 became known as the Battle of Britain Day, as that date had marked the height of the aerial action.

In 1945, thousands gathered in London to watch masses of RAF fighters carry out the first of what was to become an annual commemorative flypast over the capital; it became the tradition for a Hurricane and Spitfire to lead. With the advent of the jet age, aircraft that were once the mainstay of RAF fighter operations were withdrawn from service. By the mid-1950s Hurricane IIc LF363 was the only airworthy representative of its type in the
RAF and was based at Biggin Hill. When the Spitfire was phased out of RAF service in 1957, the only three airworthy examples were being flown by the Temperature and Humidity Monitoring Flight at RAF Woodvale. This year we will have an appearance from the Dakota, Hurricane and Spifire.

It was Sweden’s second turbojet-powered combat aircraft, the first having been the Saab 21R; additionally, it was the first Western European fighter to be produced with a swept wing after the Second World War, the Me 262 having been the first during the war. Despite its rotund appearance, from which its name derives, the J 29 was a fast and agile aircraft for its era. It served effectively in both fighter and fighter-bomber roles into the 1970s.

The Canadian T-33 Silver Star was the Canadian licensebuilt version of the Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star jet trainer aircraft (T-bird), in service from the 1950s to 2005. The Canadian version was powered by the Rolls-Royce Nene Turbojet. The T-33 entered service in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) as its primary training aircraft for fighter / interceptors. The RCAF named it the “Silver Star” in Honour of Canada (and the British Empire’s) first flight of a heavier-than-air craft, the AEA Silver Dart. The T-33 was reliable and had forgiving flight properties, which was extremely long. One of the more unusual roles was played as an aerobatic demonstration aircraft, the RCAF’s Red Knight. The final Canadair Silver Star Mk. 3 was retired from the Aerospace Engineering Test Establishment after 46 years of service and had 11394.6 flight hours at the time of retirement.

The Royal Navy BLACK CATS HELICOPTER DISPLAY TEAM The Black Cats are an exciting four-man helicopter display team who thrill audiences at air shows with their dynamic flying displays in Wildcat helicopters. The Team started in 2001 as the ‘Lynx Pair’ and have been the first official Royal Navy flying display team since the ‘Sharks’ disbanded in the mid-1990s. Winning several awards over the years, the Black Cats are requested to display all over the UK and at many European air shows. The aircrew and engineers are all volunteers from 825 Naval Air Squadron and the Lynx Wildcat Maritime Force based at the Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton in Somerset.
38 Southport Air Show 2019
The name ‘Black Cats’ is derived from the fierce cat depicted on the now disbanded 702 Naval Air Squadron emblem and the term ‘blackcatting’ which is naval slang for one-upmanship – doing or owning something better than someone else.

Richard Goodwin THE MUSCLE BIPLANE PITTS SPECIAL ‘The Muscle Biplane’, started life as a Pitts but the aircraft’s extensive modification program has given this biplane enhanced capabilities which allow Rich to perform a unique and extraordinary brand of aerobatics.
The standard Pitts’ landing gear has been removed and the engine mount modified to take Titanium sprung gear legs and there’s a new shape carbon cowling that reduces weight and profile drag.
Richard, an ex-RAF Tornado pilot now flies for a commercial airline but when he’s not at work, he’s either maintaining his current Pitts S2S Special, fondly known as G-EWIZ or building the new Jet Pitts.
All that, and more, means that Rich’s Muscle Biplane can perform double-hammerheads, high-alpha knife-edge flypasts and the amazing ‘Tower of Power’ to complete torque rolls whilst flying backwards through his own smoke.
The heart of the aircraft is a six cylinder 8.5 ltr Lycoming 0540 Engine, modified to produce 300hp and turning the latest MT Aerobatic Prop.

THE GAZELLE SQUADRON The Aerospatiale Gazelle is a five-seat helicopter used for light transport, training, and light attack duties. It is powered by a single turbine engine and was the first helicopter to feature a fenestron tail instead of a conventional tail rotor. A joint production agreement with Sud Aviation, later renamed Aerospatiale and now part of Airbus Helicopters allowed Westland Helicopters Ltd of Yeovil to license build the Gazelle, in part of sale to the British military but also for use by civilian operators. With the exception of the DeHavilland Chipmunk, the Gazelle is the only aircraft to serve with all three arms of the British armed forces; the Royal Navy, Royal Air Force and Army Air Corps, with four different variants produced:

The aircraft have been modified with extra ailerons and a bigger engine. They are fitted with a massive 450hp Pratt & Witney radial engine with a 10-foot diameter propeller. The tips of the propeller reach supersonic speeds. Wingwalking dates back to when young flying aces returned from the First World War totally addicted to the thrill of flying. After the war surplus aircraft was cheap to buy, so they were purchased by these pilots who would thrill crowds with their aerial antics and sell joy rides.
To entertain the crowds further and ensure they returned, the pilots began to persuade their girlfriends and engineers to walk out along their biplanes linen wings. This was the start of wingwalking and flying circus entertainment. The Aerosuperbatics Wingwalkers recreate the fearless glamour of those pioneering years. Utilising the latest technology, they bring all the vitality and pizzazz from the 1920’s to today’s airshows.

P-47 THUNDERBOLT The P-47 Thunderbolt, nicknamed the ‘Jug’ was a World War II heavyweight fighter aircraft produced by the United States from 1941 through 1945. When fully loaded, the P-47 weighed up to eight tons, making it one of the heaviest fighters of the war. With four .50 calibre machine guns mounted in each wing, the Thunderbolt could shred with ferocity. Its internal stores were capable of holding 3,400 rounds which enabled the

P-47 to unleash a torrent of lead for 30 seconds straight. The Jug was at its best when bouncing enemy fighters with all guns blazing. It was even more effective as a ground attack aircraft. The P-47 was popular amongst pilots as the cockpit was relatively spacious and comfortable and it was very good at absorbing punishment and the planes safety record was nothing short of outstanding.

FIREFLIES AEROBATIC DISPLAY TEAM The Fireflies perform in two Van’s RV4s. The Van’s series of sport aircraft are by a long way, the most successful line of build-it-yourself kit planes on the planet. Well over 9,000 RV’s have taken to the skies around the world and the RV4’s that the team fly are a development of the original, single seat RV3. Weighing in at an empty weight of approximately 500kg the RV4 is about a third the weight of a VW Golf but it’s fitted with a 5.3 Litre 160HP engine giving it performance like a hot-rod. Normal cruising speed is about 160 mph but we don’t do normal, so during the display the Fireflies make the most of the entire flight envelope and will be travelling at everything from zero to over 200 mph.
On Friday Night they will be fully aerobatic for their dusk display, with the use of pyrotechnics. This creates a truly unique spectacle that only a handful of people in the world are able to provide. Specification Stall Speed Cruise Speed Max Speed Seats: 2

STRIKEMASTER PAIR
The Strikemaster was built by the British Aircraft Corporation at Warton in Lancashire. It was a light ground attack export version of the Jet Provost. It was never operated by the RAF but was used extensively by airforces as diverse as Equador, Oman and New Zealand. The aircraft are ex Oman Airforce. The Oman Airforce operated the aircraft successfully in the light ground attack role with notable historical events such as the Dhofar War and the famous Battle of Mirbat in 1972. The Strikemaster played a crucial role in the battle and proved to be an extremely capable aircraft. The Strikemaster’s engine produces 3500lbs of thrust and is a pure turbo jet which creates a noticeable noise impact!

TUTOR The Grob 115E, known by the RAF as the Tutor, is used for Elementary Flying Training. The Tutor is constructed mainly from carbon fibre reinforced plastic, which combines high strength with light weight. The Tutor has side-by-side seating but, unlike the Bulldog, the primary flight instruments are on the righthand side of the cockpit. This allows the student to fly the aircraft from the right-hand seat with a right-hand stick and a left-hand throttle so that future transition to fast-jet aircraft is made easier.
Unpressurised, and powered by a Textron-Lycoming 180hp piston engine driving a Hoffman three-bladed, constant-speed propeller, the Tutor can cruise at 130kts at sea level and climb to 5,000ft in seven minutes. The Tutor is a cost-effective, modern elementary training aircraft. The combination of docile handling characteristics and good performance make it very suitable for its training role.

TUCANO
ROLE The Tucano T.Mk 1 provides basic fast jet training (BFJT) to RAF and RN aircrew on their training pathway to frontline fast jet aircraft. It is flown by 72 Sqn with No. 1 Flying Training School (FTS), at Royal Air Force Linton-on-Ouse. CAPABILITY The Tucano T1 combines the economy of turboprop power with jet-like handling and is capable of providing a full range of aircrew training. Formation flying, low-level navigation, poor weather flying and aerobatic handling are taught on 72 Sqn, taking advantage of the aircraft’s excellent endurance to maximise sortie utility. From its base in North Yorkshire, The Tucano is able to fly training sorties as far away as Wales and central Scotland, finding the most suitable weather and taking advantage of varied training environments.
