PROUD TO SUPPORT ARMED FORCES DAY

FOREWORD AIR CHIEF MARSHAL, SIR STUART PEACH, CHIEF OF THE DEFENCE STAFF GBE KCB ADC DL I am delighted that Liverpool is host for the ninth Armed Forces Day in honour of Britain’s Forces, past and present. This great maritime city’s contribution to our military history is famous, and full of inspiring stories. There is the extraordinary endeavour of men like Liverpool-born Private William Ratcliffe, who won a Victoria Cross for rushing a machine gun position on the Western Front, single-handedly routing the enemy. There is the remarkable bravery of the Liverpool Pals - close friends who fought shoulder-to-shoulder in the quagmires of Passchendaele a century ago. And there’s the Herculean efforts of the Cammell Laird shipwrights and Merseyside sailors who steered us to victory during the great Battle of the Atlantic.

It is this spirit of your city that continues to shine brightly throughout our Armed Forces today, with a huge number of Servicemen and women hailing from this region. These sailors, soldiers and airmen are busy in every corner of the globe, from policing skies in Eastern Europe, targeting terrorists in the Middle East, to training local soldiers and providing humanitarian aid in Africa. They are protecting our shores 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Today we thank them and their families, who make such sacrifices on our behalf. And we can be certain this great city will put on a show that these heroes deserve.

CAMMELL LAIRD

Cammell Laird has been trading from Birkenhead since the 1820s and we are proud to be one of Britain’s primary maritime and engineering companies. We owe both our longevity and success to our relationship with the Ministry of Defence in our role as a prime contractor. Cammell Laird has stood shoulder to shoulder with the Armed Forces both in peacetime and in conflict. During our country’s most testing times in World War One and World War Two, Cammell Laird’s workforce was at the heart of maintaining Britain’s naval defence and we have built and repaired hundreds of ships in a legacy that spans almost two centuries.

During the Second World War our largest ever workforce of 12,000 men and women built 106 naval vessels, averaging one ship every 21 days and repaired more than 2,000 merchant vessels and 120 warships as the Battle of the Atlantic raged. Just before the outbreak of war, Cammell Laird launched the Ark Royal, the first naval vessel designed and built as an aircraft carrier. She famously played a leading role, together with fellow Cammell Laird vessel the HMS Prince of Wales, in sinking the Bismarck in the North Atlantic in May 1941 before she was later torpedoed by a U-Boat in November 1941 near Gibraltar. HMS Prince of Wales, meanwhile, took then Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, to Newfoundland to meet President Roosevelt to discuss the Atlantic Charter.

7

CAMMELL LAIRD IS IMMENSELY PROUD TO BE HEADLINE SPONSOR OF THE NATIONAL EVENT FOR ARMED FORCES DAY 2017, HOSTED IN OUR HOME COUNTY OF MERSEYSIDE.

Post war, Cammell Laird continued to build and repair warships and submarines, where we built the Polaris submarines including the HMS Conqueror, HMS Renown and HMS Revenge the first of which was deployed during the Falklands War. Today, Cammell Laird continues to be central to the nation’s security. Our largest single contract is a 25-year agreement with the Royal Fleet Auxillary (RFA) to maintain a flotilla of nine ships around the world. We have further recently completed building the flight decks for Britain’s next generation of aircraft carriers extending our illustrious history of constructing aircraft carriers for the Royal Navy. We are also proud to be making parts of the Astute Class attack submarines here on Merseyside today.

Cammell Laird is a family business with skills, knowledge and passion handed down through generations, from parents to sons and daughters. At the core of those skills and passion is our commitment to the defence of our country, Royal Navy and the Armed Forces as a whole. Our past, present and future is intrinsically linked to the military. As Armed Forces Day comes to Liverpool, we salute the lionhearted men and women who sacrifice so much to protect our way of life.

THE ROYAL NAVY

The Royal Navy has deep-rooted historic links with the maritime city of Liverpool and the wider Merseyside area. The Regional Command, based at Brunswick Dock and commanded by Commodore Phil Waterhouse, hosts the Royal Navy Reserve unit HMS Eaglet. The unit along with the Royal Marine Reserves, Merseyside, trains more than 300 Reservists every year. The North West has a number of ship affiliations, where cities, boroughs or towns adopt a warship bringing a sense of pride ashore and support for crews at sea. Among these is a new affiliation between Liverpool and HMS Prince of Wales – the second of the massive

65,000-tonne Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers currently being assembled and built in Rosyth, Scotland. Many brave members of the Armed Forces and the Merchant Navy took part in the mission to help supply the Russian Front during the Second Word War, from the UK through the Arctic Circle to Russia. In February 1941, the Western Approaches Command was moved from Portsmouth to Liverpool and most of those missions, described as “the worst journey on Earth,” by Winston Churchill, were launched from and returned to Liverpool. The command was a joint HQ with the RAF Coastal Command, located in Derby House, Rumford Street. This is preserved today as a private museum.

THE ROYAL NAVY HAS STRONG HISTORICAL AND CURRENT LINKS TO LIVERPOOL; IT IS THE HOME OF THE REGIONAL COMMAND FOR NORTHERN ENGLAND AND THE ISLE OF MAN, AND A KEY AREA OF RECRUITMENT FOR BOTH THE ROYAL MARINES AND ROYAL NAVY RESERVE.

The Royal Navy’s air force also has a history in the region. The Fleet Air Arm, from the summer of 1942 to the end of 1943, had to expand from 2,665 to 6,350 aircraft to cope with the challenge of the war at sea. Work began to build a major Royal Naval Air Station on 650 acres of land outside Burscough. The station was commissioned as HMS Ringtail on September 1st 1943 and accommodated day and night fighter squadrons, torpedo squadrons, fleet requirement units and a radar training school. More than 40 squadrons were based there for short periods during the remainder of the war as they worked up to becoming operational.

20

THE BRITISH ARMY ARMY

The British Army has a strong relationship with Liverpool and Merseyside as a whole. The city and region’s on-going support is long established and greatly valued, dating back to the famous King’s Regiment and beyond. British soldiers are trained and prepared to assist with anything from flood protection work here in the UK to peacekeeping and humanitarian work overseas. Whatever the task, each individual plays an important role – whether they are Infantry or Intelligence Corps, Medic or Military Police Officer. As well as full-time soldiers, Merseyside is also home to hundreds of Reservists who have civilian jobs but, in their spare time, serve in roles as diverse as chaplains and chefs, drivers and dentists, musicians and metalsmiths.

Among the Army Reserve units which recruit from the area and have bases here include: 208 Field Hospital, 156 Royal Logistic Corps, 75 Engineer Regiment, 103 Royal Artillery, 33 Signal Squadron, 37 Signal Regiment, and 125 Field Company, 101 Battalion Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. Many of these are here today at the 2017 Armed Forces Day National Event. Also here is the North West’s Infantry: The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment. Known as the ‘Lions of England’, the Regiment was formed in 2006 by the amalgamation of the King’s Own Royal Border Regiment, the King’s Regiment and the Queen’s Lancashire Regiment.

21

EACH YEAR AROUND ONE FIFTH OF THE ARMY’S PERSONNEL ARE RECRUITED FROM THE NORTH WEST OF ENGLAND, AND A SIGNIFICANT PROPORTION OF THOSE HAIL FROM MERSEYSIDE. It consists of two full-time Regular Battalions - one in Cyprus and the other in Lancashire - and one Army Reserve Battalion which has training centres across the North West including one at Norris Green in Liverpool. Other Regiments with historic recruitment links to Merseyside include The Rifles, The Royal Tank Regiment and 3 Regiment Royal Horse Artillery. Across the wider region, around 4,000 Regular and Reserve soldiers are based in the North West, including two full time Infantry battalions in Chester and Blackpool, and a medical regiment in Preston.

THE ROYAL AIR FORCE

As the Royal Air Force approaches its centenary year in 2018, it looks to continue its long relationship with the city of Liverpool and the North West. RAF Woodvale, near Formby, is home to a significant number of RAF Reserve personnel in the North West who serve in their spare time. 611 (West Lancashire) Squadron is based there too. These personnel commit a minimum of 27 days a year to the RAF Reserves and undertake training and operations alongside Regular personnel.

The Royal Air Force defends the skies of Britain and projects Britain’s power and influence around the world. With over 50 different roles in the RAF, from Pilots, Cyberspace Communications specialists to Intelligence Analysts, there is something to interest everyone. RAF Woodvale is also home to four flying units, Liverpool University Air Squadron, Manchester and Salford University Air Squadron, No 10 Air Experience Flight and No 631 Volunteer Gliding School.

FIELDS OF BATTLE, LAND OF PEACE: THE DOUGHBOYS

Fields of Battle, Lands of Peace: The Doughboys 1917-1918 is the latest in an acclaimed series of centenary photographic exhibitions, created by Michael St Maur Sheil, to document the battlefields of the First World War as they are today. Liverpool is the second stop on a six city tour of the exhibition, which is supported by the U.S. Embassy in London. The free exhibition has been commissioned by the National World War I Museum and Memorial in the U.S. and is supported by U.S. Embassy in London. Fifteen display stands will present St Maur Sheil’s evocative images in a similar

format to his highly successful ‘Fields of Battle, Lands of Peace: Somme 1916’ exhibition last year. More than two million American soldiers, or Doughboys as they were known, served in Europe during the war. This exhibition introduces the viewer to the battlefields which, 100 years ago, were places of death and horror, now revealed by the photographer as landscapes of great beauty and tranquillity. Catch Fields of Battle, Land of Peace on Thomas Steers Way, opposite the Hilton Hotel, until Sunday 25 June 2017.

COMBAT STRESS Combat Stress is the UK’s leading mental health charity for veterans of the UK Armed Forces. We provide free treatment and support to ex-servicemen and women, as well as members of the Reserve forces, with mental health problems.

It doesn’t matter how young or old you are, where you served, or for how long – we may be able to help.

Each year a small but significant number of veterans leave the Armed Forces with complex mental health problems. This can include depression, anxiety and, in some cases, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

“When I came to Combat Stress, I met other guys who were going through the same thing as me and that was really important. It made me see it wasn’t me being melodramatic, not just me being stupid – other people were in the same situation as me.

Our 24-hour Helpline (0800 138 1619) provides confidential advice on mental health problems and how to get help. We also offer free clinical treatment at residential centres and through a UK-wide network of community teams.

Stacey is just one of many veterans who has been supported by Combat Stress;

“PTSD affects the whole family but my treatment from Combat Stress has really helped make a difference to life at home.”

Are you a veteran and worried about your mental health? We can help. We are the UK’s leading mental health charity for veterans. THE SOLDIERS CHARITY ABF The Soldiers’ Charity is the National Charity of the British Army, providing a lifetime of support to soldiers, veterans and their immediate families in times of need. The Charity was originally established in 1944 as the Army Benevolent Fund as a “Fund for the Soldier”, created to ensure that the hardships endured by Servicemen in the aftermath of 1914-1918 were never repeated. Since then, the Charity has grown into a truly national charity with a worldwide footprint – each year, it provides help to some 5,000 individuals in need, as well as makes grants to up to 100 other charities and partner organisations that deliver specialist support on its behalf, touching the lives of over 80,000 people in 55 countries worldwide. Most soldiers leave the Army with a promising future and excellent life skills, but there are some that experience mental and/or physical difficulties as a result of their service. The Soldiers’ Charity provides help across a wide range of problems that those soldiers, veterans and their families face. Often, they help with the everyday things, which may not seem exciting, but are life-changing for their beneficiaries. Support with care home fees, training courses for a spouse, or home adaptations are just some of the things that can ensure every soldier and veteran of the British Army is afforded the independence and dignity they deserve. The scope of the Charity’s work is enormous; last year its eldest beneficiary was a 105-year-old World War II widow who needed assistance in paying her care

39

home fees; the youngest was a two-yearold child of a serving soldier who needed funding for a specialist piece of medical equipment. For over 70 years the Charity has been helping people from the Army family, defining its work through the Army’s own values of courage, loyalty and selflessness. The Soldiers’ Charity holds many fundraising events in order to raise money and awareness for those who suffer the aftermath of fighting for our country. One of their most popular yet challenging events is The Cateran Yomp, which consists of teams of 3-6 people hiking across the rugged Scottish Highlands over 24 hours, with a choice of three distances; Gold – 54 miles, Silver - 36 miles or Bronze - 22 miles. Why not check out their website to see how you can get involved and help raise money for soldiers, veterans and their families. www.soldierscharity.org/yomp www.soldierscharity.org Find them on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram.

We exist to provide a lifetime of support to soldiers, veterans and their immediate families. We support up to 100 front line charities and specialist organisations – such as SSAFA, Combat Stress, Royal Star & Garter and the NSPCC – to deliver help on our behalf. We also make direct grants to some 5,000 individuals, ranging in age from 6 months to 105 years old. Through our network of support, our work touches the lives of around 80,000 people worldwide, every year. The British Nuclear Test Veterans Association (BNTVA) is the Leading UK charity representing all people who have worked with radioactive material. The British nuclear testing programme ran between 1952 and 1967, it was the largest Tri-Service operation since the D-Day landings. Over 20,000 servicemen participated in the weapons tests.

The BNTVA was formed to campaign for recognition of our Servicemen who participated in the tests. The BNTVA has developed over the years. Through the Nuclear Community Charity Fund (NCCF) it now funds research into the affects exposure and also offers help through the care and well being fund to the nuclear community.

The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity is the Navy’s charity, and is uniquely placed to know the people who are in need and the best ways to help them. By making a gift in your will, you will be supporting the remarkable men and women of our Naval Service. Uniquely, our focus for giving is on the veterans community as much as those in the front line today. We support those in care homes who wore a uniform long ago and we support the children of those who have worn the uniform or those who are wearing it today. With your support we can be there for every sailor, marine and naval family. We can be there for them for life, ensuring that they need never stand alone.
