ST. JULIE’S Learn Without Limits!

When Ofsted visited St. Julie’s Catholic High School, they found a school community where “Pupils do not perceive that there are caps on ambition”. It’s easy to see why, when students can look to the illustrious examples set by recent alumni such as Bafta award winning actress Jodie Comer and Olympic Athlete and European Indoor Pentathlon Champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson. At St. Julie’s we offer a modern and dynamic environment that respects and honours the values of a heritage of 168 years of Notre Dame teaching in Liverpool. Our mission and ethos pervade all aspects of our school life, which led Ofsted to find that “The school’s work to promote pupils’ personal development and welfare is outstanding. A culture of social justice and equality of opportunity pervades the whole school. This is manifest in the school’s approach to supporting pupils to flourish.” We believe that it is this supportive culture that allows our students to express themselves so confidently in the Performing Arts and throughout our broad curriculum. Confidence gained in Years 7 and 8 builds resilience in learning that supports our students to Sixth Form and beyond, with Ofsted judging that “Achievement in the sixth form has been consistently good for a number of years. This includes the outcomes from both the

academic and applied courses. The achievement of students currently in the sixth form continues to be good.” Of course, a positive learning environment needs to be backed up with first rate teaching and facilities. In our new building at the top of Woolton Hill, students enjoy resources including a drama theatre, gymnastics gymnasium, dance studio, learning resource centres and ICT suites, eight fully fitted science labs and our 200 seat chapel which is used for daily assemblies and collective worship. Within the classroom, Ofsted noted that “Teachers have established what successful teaching looks like in St Julie’s. This has led to the adoption of policies and the setting of expectations, that when consistently applied, contribute significantly to improving teaching and learning across the school.” If you visit our website, you’ll see many of the reasons why we believe St. Julie’s should be the first choice for any parent seeking a place for their daughter in September 2020, or a place in our mixed Sixth Form in September 2019. We’d love you to come and visit, so why not add our open night into your calendar now? We’re open from 4:00pm to 6:00pm on Thursday 19th September and we hope to see you there. If you’re interested in a Sixth Form place then please visit www.stjulies.org.uk and get in touch with us today! LIVERPOOL LOVES SUMMER 2019 17

WHEELER’S OF ST. JAMES’S Celebrity chef Marco Pierre White is known for his love of food. But the city on the River Mersey has captured his heart. Located just a stone’s throw away from the M&S Bank Arena, Wheeler’s is a popular choice for pre-event dining. The restaurant’s early bird offer includes two courses and a glass of wine for just £20, served every day of the week between 5pm – 7pm. “ Wheeler’s is the oldest seafood restaurant in the world. It was established in London in 1856, which means it’s the same age as the Royal Albert Dock. “ It’s not just for fish lovers, it’s for meat lovers as well and it’s a brand that fits very well in such a cultural city. Liverpool is a jigsaw of gastronomy.”

According to the rock star chef himself, Liverpool is never far away from his thoughts. “ Whenever I leave Liverpool, there’s always a little part of me that misses it. My father worked there as a chef in the late fifties so I get very nostalgic. “ He left Liverpool when I was born in 1961, I guess my mother demanded he came home to Leeds for my birth. It’s always emotional when I’m here because I think of my father and mother.” Marco chose Liverpool as the home of his second Wheeler’s of St. James’s restaurant, at Pullman Liverpool. “It’s one of the greatest cities in the world,” says Marco. “ It’s a beautiful city and it was a natural location for me to open Wheeler’s. I’ve always loved Liverpool. The people are wonderful and very kind.” Wheeler’s of St. James’s is Marco’s second restaurant in the city.

The new lunch menu offers three small plates for £10 and includes curried chicken and mango skewers, grilled jumbo shrimps with garlic butter and rosemary and a goat’s cheese crostini with salt baked beetroot. The menu also includes black pudding with chorizo and fried quail’s egg, a Great American slider and mini shepherd’s pie. Wheeler’s signature dish is Oysters Rockefeller, which are baked in their shell and topped with finely chopped greens and parmesan. The recipe is one of the most famous in the world. It was created in 1899 at Antoine’s Restaurant in New Orleans and is served as a starter. On the a la carte menu, the hors d ’oeuvres include a crab cocktail served with avocado, lemon mayonnaise and buttered brown bread, seared sea scallops and black pudding with cauliflower puree and pancetta, and a goat’s cheese and beetroot salad sprinkled with a walnut dressing. The selection of steaks at Mr. White’s range from 35-day aged 10oz ribeye, a 16oz roast Chateaubriand for two and a mouth-watering grilled centre cut 8oz fillet. All the steaks can be served with delicious sauces and Dorset snails with confit garlic butter and grilled oysters with jus a la Parisienne. LIVERPOOL LOVES SUMMER 2019 21

AFRICA OYÉ This isn’t just the largest festival of African and Caribbean music in Britain, it’s the best

Africa Oyé, the UK’s largest free celebration of African music and culture, takes place annually in Liverpool. Beginning in 1992 as a series of small gigs in the city centre, the event has gone from strength to strength, moving to its present Sefton Park home in 2002 to cope with demand. With too many negative representations of Africa entrenched in images of war, disease, poverty and famine, Oyé seeks to redress the balance and highlight the fantastic range of cultures, foods, music and artists that make this great continent one of the most vibrant and inspiring in the world. The festival is also a truly international event that harnesses the spirit of multiculturalism and

tolerance. It has played host to artists from nations right across Africa and also programmes music from South America and The Caribbean with Salsa, Soca and Reggae always a popular addition to the festivities. But Africa Oyé is about more than music… Over 90 stalls selling the best food, drink, arts and crafts and fashion from Africa and beyond will again be present at the Oyé village along with long time supporter ‘News From Nowhere’, one of the UK’s premier stockists of African music, with all the performing artists and much more on sale, it’s a great opportunity to not only take in some of the best roots music around, but take some home with you too.
