This easy shawl is idea for those who have never made a shawl before, or those who are experienced knitters but have a highly coloured yarn that requires a simple pattern to show it off best. It is worked from the top down, and cast off along the long edge. When using more than one skein of hand dyed yarn remember to alternate skeins every couple of rows (work a RS and WS row with one skein, then a RS and WS row with the second skein, and keep swapping). Materials: 1 x 100g skein of Eden Cottage Yarns Pendle 4ply, Titus 4ply, Tempo 4ply, or BFL Sock (100g/436yds; yarn shown is Pendle 4ply; colourway shown is ‘Atlantic’). 3.5 and 4mm circular needle, 60-80cm length (or size required to attain correct gauge) Optional: For a loose and stretchy cast off, I recommend using a needle size bigger than the edging was worked in, e.g. 4.5mm. This is not crucial. A stitch marker. Notions – scissors, tapestry needle. Gauge: 20.5 sts x 38 rows over a 10cm (4 inches) square in stocking stitch on 3.5mm needles Gauge is not crucial for this project – for a more open and drapey fabric, use both needle sizes one stop bigger, e.g. 4mm and 4.5mm needles. The larger needles are for the lace edging. Finished measurements: 118cm (42.5 inches) wingspan; 48cm (19 inches) drop. Abbreviations: Sts – stitches RS – Right side WS – Wrong side K – knit P – purl Yo – yarn over Ktbl – knit through the back loop (to twist the stitch – this is the centre stitch) K2tog – knit two together (right slanting decrease) K2togtbl – knit two together through the back loops (left slanting decrease) Sl1, k2tog, psso – slip one, knit two together, pass slipped stitch over. Pm – place stitch marker (before centre stitch; slip it, thereafter) Instructions: Using smaller needles, cast on 5sts Knit two rows R1 (RS): k2, yo, (pm), ktbl, yo, k2 (7sts) R2 and ALL WS rows: k2, p to last 2sts, k2 R3: K2, yo, k1, yo, ktbl, yo, k1, yo, k2 (11sts) R5: k2, yo, k3, yo, ktbl, yo, k3, yo, k2 (15sts) R7: k2, yo, k5, yo, ktbl, yo, k5, yo, k2 (19sts) R9: k2, yo, k7, yo, ktbl, yo, k7, yo, k2 (23sts) R11: k2, yo, k9, yo, ktbl, yo, k9, yo, k2 (27sts) Continue in this manner, increasing by 4sts ever RS row, until a total of 247sts is reached, ending on a WS row. Change to 4mm needles, and commence chart, working rows 1-19, and ending on a WS row (R20). WS rows are NOT charted. Read chart from right to left, bottom to top (rows are numbered). Remember: ALL WS rows: k2, p to last 2sts, k2. Edging stitches are charted. Finishing: Cast off loosely (preferably on needles 1mm bigger than you worked the shawl on). Weave in ends but don’t cut them off. Block the shawl, then once dry, cut your ends off.
