LaLa’s Simple Shawl Materials: 9 skeins of Mirasol Sulka (60% Merino Wool, 20% Alpaca, 20% silk) 55 yards per skein or 490 yards of similar yarn. Needles: US Size 10, 48 inch circulars. Gauge: 3 stitches per inch. Other Supplies Needed: • 2 markers • scissors • tapestry needle Abbreviations used: K=knit P=Purl YO=yarn over by bringing the yarn to the front of the work. PM=place marker SM=Slip marker K2tog= Knit 2 stitches together Cast on 5 stitches. K1, YO, K1, YO, PM, K1, PM, YO, K1, YO, K1 (now you have 9 total stitches). Turn work and knit all stitches Garter Stitch Pattern: R1: K1, YO, Knit to the marker, YO, SM, K1, SM, YO, Knit to the last stitch, YO, K1. R2: Knit all stitches. Repeat rows 1 and 2 of the Garter Stitch Pattern 3 more times (there should be a total of five garter ridges on your work). Begin to work in stockinette stitch pattern. Stockinette Stitch Pattern: R1: K1, YO, Knit to the marker, YO, SM, K1, SM, YO, Knit to the stitch before the last, YO, K1. R2: Purl all stitches. Repeat rows 1 and 2 of Stockinette Stitch pattern for a total of 3 times. Lace Row: K1, YO, K1, *YO, K2tog, repeat from * until marker, YO, SM, K1, SM, **YO, K2tog; repeat from ** until 2 stitches remain, YO, K1, YO, K1.
Purl 1 row. Repeat Stockinette stitch pattern another 3 times. The shawl will be continued in this fashion: 5 repeats of the Garter Stitch Pattern, 3 repeats of the Stockinette Stitch Pattern, a Lace Row, Purl 1 row, 3 repeats of the Stockinette Stitch Pattern. Ending with the Garter Stitch Pattern, bind off all stitches when the shawl reaches your desired length and width. Weave in all ends using a tapestry needle and enjoy your new shawl!
