MEASUREMENTS Approx. 68” x 32” Appr after blocking Intarsia Method When switching from one color to the next within each row, drop the color you have been knitting with, and bring the yarn for the next color up under the yarn of the previous color before you continue knitting. This will twist the two yarns around each other, preventing holes in your work. (abbr. from Knitty.com)
INSTRUCTIONS With MC, CO 2 sts; add CC and with CC, CO 2 sts. 4 sts. Next row: With CC, P2; place marker; with MC, p2. This establishes the intarsia pattern for the shawl. MC and CC are worked on either side of the marker for the entire project. Be sure to twist yarns together on the wrong side of your work (see Intarsia Method note at left, if needed) when changing colors. Page 1
Row 1: With MC, kfb, k1; slip marker; with CC, kfb, k1. Row 2 (and ALL even-numbered WS rows): With CC, p to marker; slip marker; with MC, p to end. Row 3: With MC, kfb, k to 1 st before marker, yo, k1; slip marker; with CC, k1, yo, k to last 2 sts, kfb, k1. Repeat rows 2-3 until wm desired size, with at least enough yarn remaining to finish shawl (read below). Note: shawl in photos was worked to 101 sts of each color. Each color of yarn remaining should measure at least four times the length of one color section for each garter stitch edge row to be worked, plus one row for bind off. For example, if the black section of my shawl measures 20 inches wide when I am ready to start three garter stitch edge rows and one bind off row, I should have 80 inches of black yarn remaning for each row: 320 inches total, about 9 yards. I should also have about 9 yards of purple yarn remaining. GARTER STITCH EDGE: Row 1 (WS): With CC, k to marker, drop CC; slip marker; bring MC between needles to back of work (as if to knit), twist MC and CC tog, with MC, k to end. Row 2: With MC, kfb, k to 2 sts before marker, kfb, k1, drop MC; slip marker; bring CC between needles to back of work (as if to knit), twist CC and MC tog, with CC, kbf, k to last 2 sts, kfb, k1. Row 3 (WS): Rep row 1. BIND OFF: With MC, work a basic knit bind off to marker, break MC; remove marker; bring CC between needles to back of work (as if to knit), twist MC tail and CC yarn tog, with CC, k1, pass rem MC st over knit st, continue basic knit bind off to end. Break CC. FINISHING: Weave in all ends. Soak well and dry flat, shaping edges.
