Context Afro-Caribbean hair products are highly sought after for their repairing qualities. Though reasonably priced and easy to find, these products are unfortunately almost always packaged using garish, clashing colours and a variation of unsuitable typefaces. For this reason, Afro-Caribbean hair products stand out on the shelves, but for all the wrong reasons. It is difficult to find well designed, simply packaged afro hair products. Working with Callum Hobson on BA Creative Advertising, redesign a set of afro hair products. This should be done in the form of new branding, identity and packaging design. Brief or Tasks Working with Callum Hobson on BA Creative Advertising, redesign a set of afro hair products. This should be done in the form of new branding, identity and packaging design. As well as designing new branding, create a promotional campaign that sets the hair products apart from what is already currently on sale. Many brands of Afro-Caribbean hair products shy away from certain colours and experimental print and packaging techniques. This designed set should stand out from the crowd and exude luxury and opulence, and play on themes of femininity to encourage women to invest in the brand. Preparation/Research suggestions Research existing Afro-Caribbean hair products on the high street. Look for themes, and common design techniques. Research European hair products and make comparisons. Also look at popular high street salons that sell hair products. Carry out experiments into print processes and packaging techniques that are avoided by popular Afro-Caribbean hair products. Primary research may include carrying out surveys, questionnaires and interviews. The results from these will enable to determine what attracts the attention of the public when purchasing haircare products. Explore processes such as embossing and foiling to explore the idea of luxury products. Evidence – for this project students should submit Research from a range of primary and secondary sources posted onto blog A new line of Afro-Caribbean haircare that is designed using alternative methods to what is currently being produced; this should be presented in the form of packaging design. A promotional campaign to promote and raise awareness for the new brand.
