I requested some paper samples from GF Smith, which is included swatch book and A4 paper samples. I included photographs of these in the ‘Stock’ chapter of the book.

ONLINE/ BOOK RESEARCH

WORKSHOPS

As part of our studio workshops, we looked at paper types and print methods. One of the workshops saw us looking closely at printed stock through a magnifying glass and analysing the print method.

A lot of my research involved researching books in the library which looked at print processes, colour in print and finishing. I watched videos on the internet which explained the different print processes and read online articles.

design development LAYOUT

Initially, I designed the book to use a 10 column grid (double page) but decided to use 12 in the ďŹ nal design. 12 columns gave a more even layout as each image almost always took up the same 3 columns per page as each text box.

ILLUSTRATION

Illustrative diagrams to explain each print process, book binding process and folding method. These diagrams are more understandable to the target audience; new graphic designers. Creates a consistent design throughout the book.

During the process of design, I experimented with several different typefaces. I used the typeface Akzidenz Grotesk as it is a simple, clean sans serif typeface. I initially wanted to use Edmondsans but decided it was unsuitable because it’s more decorative design means it is unsuitable for body copy.

COLOUR

Adapting colour modes on imagery to convey halftone, monotone, duotone, tri tone.

This is the opening chapter of the book. It focuses on the different colour models and techniques such as halftone, monotone and duotone. The chapter also explains Pantone and the Pantone Matching System, as well as colour gamut.

ďŹ nal outcome FORMAT

This chapter of the book focuses on paper formats and sizes and looks at the different uses of each. It also looks at envelope sizes. I tried to keep the illustrations consistent to the design throughout the book by using different tones of the blue.

PRINT

This is the best designed chapter of the book, it focuses on the different print processes. The chapter is well designed in terms of illustration and layout design. Again, I kept the theme of the illustrations consistent to the book design by using the same blue.

STOCK

This chapter of the book focuses on stock. I requested paper samples from GF Smith and photographed them for imagery throughout the chapter. I also cut down some A4 samples and bound them into the book to use as paper samples for the reader.

FINISHING

This chapter of the book focuses on ďŹ nishing including binding, folding, embossing, debossing and laser cut.

I used some of my own illustrations again in this chapter for the binding and folding pages, and kept the illustration techniques the same.
