Design For Web
INITIAL IDEAS The purpose of this website is to attract people to Brighton and to encourage them to visit the city. It works as an information source on Brighton’s culture, history and events.
These are some of my initial ideas. I initially wanted to create website that had a homepage with a photograph easily recognisable as Brighton, such as the beach, the architecture, the culture. i was unsure of which one to go for so a few of my designs included four images in one; the idea behind this was to give the user a taste of Brighton, and to show them that Brighton has a lot to offer.
One of my ideas was to incorporate the gay pride logo into the website as this is a huge part of Brighton’s identy. After receiving crit feedback I decided against this idea purely because I would alienating my audience; I want a website that does not define a specific audience and it designed to appeal to everyone. Incorporating the gay pride logo may give the impression that I am promoting the gay pride festival which would possibly not be suited to an older audience as this is a party event.

BRIGHTON
PRIMARY RESEARCH Lots of photographs of events in Brighton as part of primary research. Attended events such as gay pride, Brighton Food Festival, hotel tours etc.
DESIGN DEVELOPMENT My designs in relation to Brighton are mostly centred around Brighton architexture. I created this drawing of the Royal Pavilion in Brighton and feel it could be adapted to many different designs.
Living in Brighton at the time of the research being carried out made the process quite enjoyable. I love Brighton because of its bohemian and exuberant culture. The city is so colourful in terms of its food, its architecture, even down to its buses. I really wanted to capture this in my website.
R OYAL
PAV I L I O N Brighton’s Royal Pavilion was built in 1787, one of Brighton’s most notable landmarks.

TYPOGRAPHY
IMAGERY
I chose to use Edmondsans as the typeface throughout the website. The only time this typeface isn’t used is on the background image on the homepage. I chose Edmondsans because it looks non formal without being too decorative, the simple design is also good for body copy.
On the index page, I used Baskerville as for the title ‘Brighton’ on the image. I decided to use Baskerville because it reminds me of Brighton’s Victorian heritage. The setting of the photograph is right near the old Victorian Pier and overlooks King’s Road, home to some of Brighton’s oldest hotels and buildings.
Edmondsans COLOUR SCHEME I chose colours that reminded me of Brighton, in particular the beach. I chose a sandy, yellow to represent the pebble beach and a light blue that represented the sea. I think these colours work really well with the homepage image and I felt that white would compliment them best as the type on the buttons. I wanted the website’s colour scheme to represent Brighton’s bold culture without being too garish. I think this colour choice would appeal to a wide audience; male and female, young and old.

CODING THE WEBSITE
CODING THE WEBSITE
I found the process of coding the website tricky at times as this is the first website I’ve created. I used the script ‘Lightbox’ to include thumbnails to each page. As each page had the same layout, I found the coding process easy once I got familiar with coding the index page.
I used the ‘Lightbox’ script to add thumbnails to each page. I wanted each thumbnail to be consistent with the circular design of the website, so I made clipping masks of each thumbail in Illustrator. One of the website’s themes is minimal design throughout, so instead of placing lots of images on the page, I opted for thumbnails.
Design For Web These are the final designs of the website. I incorporated some screen printed designs of Brighton’s Royal Pavilion into the website’s design as part of an app that could be an add-on from the website and also as a website banner.
